  • Incredibly Useful for PS3 Owners who Had PS2s

    By A3V6Z4RCDGRC44 on 2006-12-19
If you are getting your hands on a PlayStation 3 and have any PS2 games that you used to play on a PlayStation 2, then it is really important to get your hands on this memory card adaptor.

In essence the memory card adaptor is a little box that you can put your PS2 memory card into. A cable then plugs into the PS3's USB port. This is the only way to get the save games from your PS2 into your PS3 so you can then use them with your PS2 games.

Almost every PS3 owner I have spoken with owns a PS2 and many PS2 games. They intend to keep playing those PS2 games on the PS3. This is especially true with epic PS2 games like Final Fantasy XII. There's no reason to start again from scratch! The memory card adaptor is rather cheap, and saves you weeks if not months of play time.

The act of moving save games is really very easy. Simply put your PS2 memory card into the small unit. On the PS3 console, select the card. It asks you to give a name to the "storage area" on your PS3's hard drive. For my 8 memory cards, I just named those storage areas CARD1 - CARD8, so that they matched up with the cards. Then you hit a button, and wait about 2 minutes while the files are moved.

Once they're on your PS3's hard drive, you're all set! You can view the save games, delete the ones you don't want any more, and use them to play with.

Definitely a must-have for a PS3 owner who has any PS2 memory cards lying around - or who has friends who might visit with PS2 games and cards. Sure, the PS3 games are great - but there are a TON of PS2 games out there that are a lot of fun, too. This little device lets you take advantage of all that time you've already invested in the game.

  • Now this adapter can do two-way transfers

    By A3FNM6LQ7VEKWH on 2007-05-25
As of the latest code update to the PS3, this adapter can now write out to a PS2 memory card, as well as read from one (which was all it could do before). A previously lame product now, officially, rocks.

  • This is really ridiculous....

    By A1ALU5YIH57S5B on 2007-01-08
I just went out & bought a new PS3. I bought "Resistance Fall of Man" & the total with tax was around $718. Now dont get me wrong, I have really enjoyed the console & am excited about the new titles that will be released in the future. But what is ridiculous is how the console has three different external memory port formats. Not one of them is for the memory card format for the PS nor the PS2.... It seems like when Sony was adding all of the other bells & whistles to this console as it has many, it seems like they would have given it the functionality out of the box to support the memory card formats from it's earlier generation consoles.... After all the games from the PS & PS2 can be played on the PS3. Why should the customer have to shell out an additional $30 for an adapter that will only be used once to transfer memory cards from the old game consoles. This is really just a trick to make more money....

  • A Must Have Accessory

    By AKXMB0LC6R2GZ on 2007-02-03
Many people whine like little babies saying how Sony stuck it to us...blah, blah, blah, but if you think about it, all the consoles have stuck it to everyone. So, chose your poison and shut up already! Xbox 360 has the quick charge that doesn't come with it, head sets, not to mention the HD-DVD add-on around $200. Nintendo Wii, each Wii-Mote you want, you'll have to buy the Wii-Mate, and the Nun-Chuck separately. Also, this Memory Card Adapter is just an accessory, you can always play the games on your original hard ware, which is better in many ways. For me, this is a small price to pay for all my loaded PS2 saves. As for as I know, Nintendo Wii doesn't have anything that allows the Gamecube memory cards to be stored on your Wii hard-drive. Buy this, and all you whiners, stop gaming now, because gaming these days...is never cheap.

  • Adapter works just the way it says. yay.

    By A3KQE3BCGDP75D on 2007-09-19
I've always had a problem with these companies charging me to gain access to saves on the games I've already paid for. I can't imagine it would have been that much trouble to include a PS2 memory card slot on the PS3. Just another chance to squeeze a little more profit out of us helpless consumers. The adapter works fine, but it shouldn't be required in the first place.

  • Don't waste $15 on this...
    By AZ1UGI6NDBHBU on 2007-04-09
Do yourself a favor and borrow a memory card adapter from a friend if you can...it's absurd to waste your money on it only to use it once. You can transfer your PS2 data to your PS3 but not back onto the PS2 memory card. If you've got some friends, go in together and buy it. If these aren't options and you need one then I guess you don't have much of a choice but it's a total waste of money either way.

  • does what it's supposed to do
    By ARJT54V72576E on 2007-07-28
This card adapter does exactly what it is supposed to do. It's just a bit more expensive than I would like it to be.

  • Memory Card Adapter
    By A215WJO2MBA75Z on 2008-05-01
It does exactly what it claims to, copy your PS1 and PS2 memory card files over to your PS3. It's only useful if your PS3 is backwards compatible ie. the 80 GB or 60 GB versions. And even then, you only need to use it once. I recommend getting it used since I'm sure the seller will have only used it once and it will still be in perfect condition.

  • USELESS with large memory cards
    By A2K3QI0WB3S7PM on 2007-08-09
I don't know why, but this stupid thing won't read my 64MB PS2 memory card and I read somewhere online that it will only work with the 8MB cards- complete waste of money...

  • Uncompatible with non-sony cards!??
    By A19R7T7NCQ4FAE on 2008-03-27
The ps3 adapter can transfer ps1 and ps2 save data to and also from the PS3 hard drive( due to update 1.80) however it DOES NOT WORK with 3rd party memory cards!! I've tried my PS1 memory cards[pelican and thrustmaster] and only the sony branded one worked, the others weren't recognized. This is rather inconvenient, hopefully they'll fix it in a future update. Haven't tried it since update 1.80 but i don't recall seeing a fix in any subsequent updates[the bd profile 2.0 enabled one].

  • Hard to get - Easy to get rid of
    By A1250POFZL8U1B on 2007-01-31
Does it suck having to buy this thing? Yes. Is it worth the money? Sure. Should this have been integrated with the PS3? No, not really. The thing is that Sony is FINALLY getting away from proprietary hardware - in other words, you won't have to go out and buy another Playstation memory card (hopefully ever). What does bother me, however, is the limited quantities of this device that Sony has made available. This has led to price gouging of anyone who needs one. I was fortunate enough to find one yesterday after calling 28 stores. Yes, 28 (it was a slow day at the office). The good thing is that you can use this once and then either return it to the store for a refund (and to help out another fellow gamer) or you can stick it on ebay and dump it on someone for anywhere between $30 and $50. In short, this thing is VERY easy and quick to use, but getting your hands on one is the hard part, but once you do, you won't have any trouble getting rid of it (unless you're some sort of sadist or obsessed with having to have everything PS3).

  • Get it, use it, and resell it.
    By A3P08EXSXDTC4J on 2007-03-24
First off, everybody needs to stop complaining that Sony didn't include this capability in the PS3 itself. Microsoft reamed us by providing No way to move saves from the Xbox to the 360, so having to pay a few bucks to do it on Playstation is a big step up in my opinion. (would have lost a 120+ hour Final Fantasy XII save if Sony was treating us like Microsoft.)

Now that that's out of the way, this little gadget works just fine. All you do is plug it into your USB controller cable, pop in the memory card, and hit download. (it'll prompt you)
I've moved both PS2 and PS1 saves with no problem.

The only thing left to do now is assign the data to a `memory card slot' (just a software trick) so that your old games can find it.

Once you're done, get some of your cash back by selling the adaptor and old memory cards to Gamestop, or on e-bay.

  • A little misleading
    By AD98PACTUMTPK on 2007-05-15
Maybe I didn't read the description properly but in the picture it looks like you just plug it straight into your PS3 but in actual fact you also need to buy the connecting lead. Other than that it works fine.

  • I knew SONY wouldn't let us down
    By A2FO2Y5U5R0AZE on 2007-06-09
This is really important for those who own, and do not yet own, this advice. SONY has just released the 1.80 firmware update for your PS3. On top of the usual changes and additions, the firmware update fixed the programing on the PS3 that would not let you transfer data back to your Memory Cards from the PS3 harddrive. This is a giant leap forward for those who own multiple counsels or just enjoy playing their games at other people's houses as well. Good job, SONY.

  • Necessary, but annoying add-on
    By AQDB6KMVED9PS on 2007-08-07
If the PS2 Codebreaker cheat device worked with the PS3's USB ports, I wouldn't have to get this. Usually I download and transfer .CBC saves and cheat codes with my USB flash drive and save them to the PS2's memory card. When you have the Codebreaker running on the PS3 and insert a flash drive, the USB is disabled. So you can't transfer game saves. Also, with a game like Metal Gear Solid 3 that has 100s of lines of cheat codes, you're out of luck unless you want to enter codes for two hours.

I hope Pelican updates Codebreaker to run properly on the PS3, but somehow I doubt this will happen. And Sony definitely won't allow USB to run under Codebreaker in a firmware upgrade as they want to sell these little cash-in adapters, and they probably don't like cheat devices anyway.

Nintendo put two Gamecube memory slots on the $250 Wii as a backward compatibility service to fans. Sony couldn't have put ONE somewhere on their huge $600 high tech machine?

  • Necessity that should of been in the system.
    By A1PCQHQ6NPGL9F on 2006-12-25
Basically, if you want to get your saves from your old ps2 and ps1 memory cards, you have to buy one of these. It really should of been included in the ps3, but sony decided not to put it there(probably for more money).

The thing is easy to use though. You plug in your memory cards and upload them. No problems with it.

  • Works only one way and not the other
    By A3Q0G2M6GSN4IT on 2007-03-25
It is extremely easy for you to backup game saves from PSone or PS2 memory cards to PS3 by a single click.

Currently, there are no rumble features, drum, nor dancing pad supported for the PS3. If I need to use those speical controllers or arcade sticks using traditional PS2 controller connection, I must need to use my old PS2. Somtimes I also want to backup saves from my PS2 to PS3. Moreover, if I want to experience God of War II with rumble feature, I must need to go back to my PS2. Once you started the game on PS3, you CANNOT transfer the saves back to PS2 to play!

Sony should fix this problem by letting us transfer psone and ps2 data back and forth, not just one way to the PS3 for the next firmware update.

  • PS3 Memory Card Adaptor
    By APZL5EU9JFQIE on 2007-03-29
The device is used to transfer files from the PS2 to the PS3. It's not a game. The PS3 should have already come with this option. Waste of money, really.

    By A1DJ3EC1KWVK0A on 2008-06-09
i used it once and shoulda just sent it back because i dont need it anymore.

  • Necessary, cheap, but really ....
    By A2E489T1BBK99V on 2006-12-17
Well, you need that if you want to enjoy the retro-compatibility and have some ps2 saves lying around. Kind a of pain in the neck since you can't do much with it, like copying or saving directly to the mem card which may be frustrating if you want to move your datas. They'll propbably find a way to do it in the near future but for now this item has only one use, and is not very polyvalent.

  • Just as described!
    By A1VTM16JXJQGFN on 2007-06-30
This product was a great price and was just as described, serves its purpose. I bought it about 6 months ago and it still works great. Thanks!

  • use it once, then return it
    By A1O7S6UK1NDN10 on 2007-08-13
This device is a necessity for any PS3 owner who still wants to play their old PS2 games. However, realistically you're paying $15 for a one-time transfer of all your old PS2 games to your PS3 hard drive. Luckily this Memory Card Adaptor comes in packaging that can easily be put back together. So after you're done transferring all your old games, just bring it back to the store. Or if you bought it online, see if you can get some store credit at Best Buy or Circuit City. Steer clear of EB Games or GameStop though, they're probably already familiar with this little trick.

  • Sony MC Adaptor
    By A1GUJV2MY87Q9 on 2007-09-11
If you want to transfer your PS2 game saves to your new PS3 you need this card. The latest PS3 software update has nothing to do with file transfer. You can write data to the card which can come in handy if your traveling.

  • Must have.
    By A1K15NQAG8F33W on 2007-09-15
This is a must have if you brought a PS3 and have older games on your PS2 Memory card. The only bad thing is: it ONE way transfer only. If you play and saved a game on your PS3 and you want to tranfer that game file to bring to your friend's house... you cant.

  • EXCELLENT PRODUCT
    By A2D8X5QFPM8K33 on 2007-09-17
When buying this, you must keep one thing in mind... "When will I ever use this again after I copy the files onto my PS3?" I too was very frustrated that I couldn't continue with my PS2 games after the purchase of the PS3. So, after I recieved this item, transfered all my files over onto the hard drive on the PS3. I had absolutely no use for this other then a paper weight. Maybe that's why the price for this product was apraised so low.

  • too much
    By A1VKDF0BLSTN6B on 2007-10-05
The memory card adapter, while useful, was too much for something with really only a one time use.But it did work well for what I needed it for.

  • Only works on standard 8mb cards
    By A1C0OKFP2O9NUC on 2007-12-04
Overall the quality is good and it worked great, for any of my "Sony" brand 8mb cards that we had.

However, if you're like me and have a few > 8mb cards laying around (mine are all 64mb each), good luck getting them to work, the ones I have wouldn't show up on the PS3's XBM and therefore I can't retrieve any of my most recent saves.

Also, even if you're lucky enough to have a memory card > 8mb in size that shows up (if thats even possible), PS3 only allows you to create 8mb partitions for the cards, so I'm guessing you'll still be out of luck or have to at least create multiple 8mb partitions to split the card on to.

I think it would have been nice if Sony would have thought to include larger than 8mb cards in the PS3 design and this converter too, its not like they didn't know those kind of products existed, they've been around since the invent of video game memory cards.

  • It works great, but....
    By A1QBWDT0ZIZJV3 on 2007-12-07
This product does what it says, and does it well. It will transfer your PS1 and PS2 memory cards to the hard drive memory of your PS3, so you have all your old game info on your PS3, in case you ever get the urge to revisit your favorite Playstation or PS2 game and don't wanna have to start from scratch again.

That being said, unless you are regularly still playing your old PS2 and transfering the new saves to the PS3, (and why would you?) it is a one-time use item. You will use it once to transfer all your game saves to the PS3, and then it will forever sit in it's box from then on, still virtually brand new.

The other problem I noticed is it will only read memory cards that hold 8MB. If you have one of the booster cards that hold 16MB or 32MB or 64MB etc. You will have to have an 8MB card as well, and transfer data with your PS2 from the larger card to the 8MB card, then relay the 8MB card to the adapter, transfer the data to the PS3 hard drive, go back to the PS2 with the 8MB card, delete the files on it, transfer 8MB more onto it from the larger card, lather, rinse, repeat, etc.

Overall, it's a nessasary evil if you want your old game saves on your PS3, but it's a one-time use product. If you can find it used or on an auction site cheaper, do it. Otherwise, if you have several friends who have PS3s, you could always split the cost of it and each get a use out of it.

  • if you have a ps3..you need this
    By A4G51W9PC7TJL on 2007-01-08
this should have been included in the system .. if you plan to import all of your ps2 files...you need this....its a no brainer

  • Former PS2 users gotta buy this
    By A8OJ6T7HUSVGU on 2007-02-17
If you own PS2 games, you have to have this if you buy a PS3. It's money well spent. Too bad it doesn't come with it.
