  • Good plastic

    By AF8XXTXR6MNL4 on 2007-02-13
I travel enough that I'd like to have a little protection for the Mac Laptop and I don't want to add yet another bag within a bag.

This is a simple plastic cover in two pieces that snaps into place and that is easily removed. I opted for clear plastic .. The red is attractive. It has a good feel.

I'd probalby give it five stars, but like almost everything designed for Macs, it costs more than it should. There's probably a dollar's worth of plastic in it, some design tim, etc. But I haven't seen anything better.

  • needs tweaking

    By AZE7DX0MAJ7OM on 2007-03-15
I think everyone will have the same problem of the right hinge catching on the bottom shell, causing a loud snapping sound sometimes when you open the lid quickly. I solved this by scraping a bit of plastic off the edge there, giving the hinge more clearance. it's a pretty easy fix. Also, I noticed that my right front bottom corner keeps popping out - could be because the little rubber foot on the macbook pro doesn't quite fit into the hold in the bottom shell, so it doesn't sit all the way down and get latched in.

These are all quality control issues that for such an expensive product, they should do better. it requires some relatively minor mould modification - so they should just tweak it.

Another issue I've noticed is that my screen can't open as far back with the shell on as without. this is because the shell thickness is preventing it.

But overall, the case does what it's suppose to = protect your macbook/pro. I'd love to have a clear smoke version, or even a darker grey.

  • An Excellent Way to Dress Up & Protect Your MacBook Pro

    By A3FXT4UPI30K7S on 2008-01-22
My early version MacBook Pro suffered from some surface scuffing on the bottom, and a bit of a dent on the top... before I outfitted it with Speck's See-Thru hard case in blue. Just as hermit crabs need a stronger shell for safety, so too do MacBook Pro computers require something stronger than the rather thin aluminum they're born with... and Speck's See-Thru hard case is the optimal solution. Whereas slipcover cases come off just when laptops are most likely to get dinged, scuffed, splashed or scraped, the hard case can stay on the laptop all the time, whether it's open or closed.

The choice of eight different colors for these laptop cases is excellent, allowing Mac owners to find something to match their individual style. The sturdy polycarbonate plastic is just the perfect thickness to provide the rather fragile laptop with a water-resistant, scuff-resistant, and dent-resistant protective cover. Those who wish to further personalize their computer can slip artwork between their computer and the hard case whenever the mood strikes... and this kind of personalization can easily be changed as often as desired.

Installation of the See-Thru hard case is a breeze. No sooner had I opened the wrapper, I snapped the hard case on my computer in just a few seconds. It went together so quickly that I was startled, so I studied the directions and saw I'd put it together perfectly... and there was easy access to all the ports on the sides.

One of my concerns about the See-Thru hard case had been that it might adversely increase the temperature of my computer, which occasionally tends to run a bit hot. I was relieved to find that my computer did not run hotter with the See-Thru case than without it. The fact that the See-Thru case lifts the MacBook Pro up a bit higher off the work surface means that there is more room for air to circulate underneath the computer, so there is a better chance for it to be cooled.

I'd heard that some people have trouble with the hard case interfering with opening the laptop fully, but I had no trouble opening the laptop up all the way smoothly, fully, and quietly every time.

I recommend Speck's See-Thru hard case to anyone seeking to maintain their MacBook Pro in the best possible condition with some beautiful color options. This is a great way to extend the life of your computer along with your enjoyment of it... and along with key covers and wrist guards, it's the best way to keep your computer looking and working like its brand new!

  • Disappointed

    By A3O3NXPQ93CKHO on 2007-04-02
I have been less impressed with the new case for a number of reasons:
    1) The additional insulation does cause heat related performance issues.
    2) I had to trim the bottom case with a sharp knife so that it didn't catch when opening and closing.
    3) Even after trimming the case, as recommended on the Speck website, the bottom part of the case still doesn't secure completely to the laptop (although this could be specific to my machine).
    4) The additional weight on back of the screen causes the laptop to shut with considerable more force.
    5) The case adds overall weight and size.
    6) The case further limits the angle at which the laptop can be opened.

Still, I use the top part of the case without the bottom part. The case provides some protection against the flexible nature of the screen part of the laptop. If you allow the top to flex you run the risk that external pressure will push the rivets (the ones that attach the apple icon) into the back of your display. This will cause little dark spots on your screen that don't go away.

  • "How'd you paint your Macbook Pro red?!"

    By AUJ3I9QSRJ5ND on 2007-05-11
I get asked all the time how I "painted" my MacBook Pro red -- it's pretty incredible what a spectacle it is -- in a good way! I swear, I should become a traveling salesperson, this case looks so good!

BUT, there is one issue -- primarily that the fit is so tight that the underside has developed about an inch long crack from one of the corners, and I've only had it about a month.

I intend to contact the manufacturer and see if I can get a replacement because otherwise, this was a great buy.

  • Good case but cheaply constructed
    By A1I48A2X3RURAY on 2006-12-15
I saw that case on someone else's laptop, and thought it'd be the best thing to protect the computer from getting dirty, from scratches. It's actually the best product I have seen around to do that, but unfortunately even at such a high price as $40, it's been constructed cheaply. Here you are the 2 major problems I have found:
    - The case is basically 2-3mm (millimeter) thick and cover almost all the outside of the laptop. It comes in 2 pieces one for the bottom and one for the top (the screen). The bottom comes comes around in the back where the hinge is, but stops to enable the opening of the computer. The screen opening depends on the gap b/w the screen and the bottom part of the computer. That speck case reduces the gap, meaning it reduces the opening of the screen. This is very incovenient when using your laptop while lounging with your laptop on your lap... one of the reasons why you might have a laptop, is to be able to use it everywhere you want. This is clearly a problem and worries me as over time this could potentially add too much pressure on the hinge. I hope a better design will come with this.

    - The construction problem, comes also from the hinge area. The same part where the screen extreme bottom-left & bottom-right side hit the bottom part of the speck case. But this time it happens when opening the computer, the screen part of the case catches on the bottom part pushing it down to the point where it could break. This again poses a problem on the computer hinge itself, adding too much pressure on a very sensitive part of a very expensive computer.

I hope others won't have that problem, but I will be reporting this to speck. Hopefully they can improve the design for what in the first place is a very good idea.

  • This Product "fair" and thats a stretch...
    By AFX3HU1POSVHI on 2007-01-09
I just ordered this product with expedited shipping. Three days later I finally recieved a tracking number for the product through USPS. I HATE dealing with USPS. Anytime I ever ship/recieve a shipment through them, the box/bag is always butchered and they never provide any information as to where my package is. Upon getting the product, THERE WAS NO PACKAGE PROTECTION AT ALL. This clear plastic case was shipped in a thin paper envelope. It has hairline scratches in numerous spots and a fairly rugged scratch around the corner from the CDR-DVDR slot. Also, the image shown for this product is not the same one as this. I guess for the Core 2 Duo case, they completely disreguarded putting any plastic around the peripheral slots on the right side of the laptop. In the picture it shows plastic all around the monitor slot, firewire slot, usb etc. There is nothing there, its just a big cut-out, and I find that cheap and that they didn't want to spend time to create that side. They did it for the opposite side, why not this one????? The case does look pretty neat on the computer and gives it a nice shine. However if you have a dog in the house, this will be a nightmare because it attracts hair and dust in ways unknown to man. If I had to choose whether or not to buy this again, I probably still would because the MacBook Pro does scratch easily and cheesy protection is better than no protection in my book.

Overall this product recieves a 1 because:
    - Horrid, cheap shipping
    - Scratched before I even opened it
    - Right side of bottom panel is not finished/looks like they didn't take the time to finish their product
    - Attracts dust and hair wayyyyy to easily (I spent about an hour wiping the product down before putting it on my laptop

  • Excellent product!
    By A1EQXN83A7N2XI on 2007-06-27
I was a bit concerned when I read a few of the reviews of these Speck See-Thru Hard Cases, but I decided to throw caution (and forty-something bucks) to the wind and give one a whirl. Turns out, it far exceeded my expectations. I ordered the black version, and it's both sleek and protective. My MacBook Pro has never looked better (Love the apple shining through the square on the lid!), and there's no danger of scratches...or overheating, as the bottom is well-ventilated. This is easily one of the best investments I've made for my beloved Apple notebook.

Just to be certain, I've removed the cover a couple of times, and there were no problems. If I could, I'd give it 5+ stars.

  • Seems to be worth it..
    By A2IF43VUHB1SOY on 2007-02-24
So far so good. The case came in mint condition, and does what it is supposed to. Finger prints seem to show easily, but they also wipe right off again. I just wanted to prevent the Mac from getting all scratched up, and this
    takes care of that..

  • DO NOT buy this junk
    By A2VYESPBKRUK67 on 2007-11-29
Normally I don't ever write reviews but this product was so incredibly bad I had to write one warning everyone to stay away from this product.

First impression: I was very disappointed when I received the item. All it consisted of was two cheaply made plastic that easily costs under 5 dollars. Before I bought the product, I tried searching for many pictures besides these generic ones taken from bad angles and I can see why they never wanted to put up good close-up pictures on their website - the product is almost too embarrassing to show. It's build, finish, quality, everything is terrible.

OK it's not all about the looks I thought, so I took it out and tried to put the case on my Macbook Pro. The top part fit pretty well, but one of the notches on the bottom part didn't even fit over my laptop. Also, some parts of the case (especially the right part around the ports) don't even snap onto the laptop so you can easily bend it back and possibly even cut your finger (which I almost did).

After about 10 minutes of wrestling with the bottom piece (I've tried putting it on & off numerous times), I looked at the case and saw all these nasty looking finger prints that were easily visible (case was black). Obviously I got really turned off and decided to return this schmuck product straight back to Amazon tomorrow.

So the take home message is: DO NOT bother even looking at this product. I'm going to buy a cool-looking custom made sleeve instead with my $50 right now after I submit this review.

  • excellent case with only a few minor issues
    By A3N7FZ7CADZ1HI on 2008-04-17
First of all, a little background - I've been using the red version of this case for about 8 months now, and just recently purchased a black one because the red one was starting to look a little worse for wear from me taking it on and off so much. Now, the actual review:

PROS: Great scratch & dent protection for the MBP, fits perfectly, hides older scratches and dents nicely =D, looks nifty, provides about as much protection as one of the various neoprene sleeves you'll find without the need for constantly taking it off (obviously), comes with a microfiber cleaning cloth, sturdy construction (the main parts of the case have never cracked in my use, and only one of the tabs has)

CONS: the BLACK version of the case appears to scratch and scuff much more easily than the red version. this is most likely because it is much darker and more opaque and thus scratches are more noticeable. for example, i noticed scuffs after just one day of carrying it around in my backpack with my other notebooks. also, when taking it on and off often, be aware that it will become looser and the small tabs that hold it on the notebook have a greater risk of breaking (as was the case with my red version).

IN GENERAL: I like this case and would definitely recommend it. it provides a nice extra bit of protection, especially from dents and dings, one of the main weaknesses of the MBP's aluminum casing. however, don't purchase this if you're expecting something that will never scratch - it will, rapidly, and the shiny finish will become dull. however, that's exactly what it has been designed for, and frankly, i'm willing to sacrifice the finish of a $50 case versus the $2400 notebook.

VALUE: again, the protection it offers is definitely worth it. however, you should consider other options, like the aforementioned neoprene sleeves that are typically a bit cheaper yet offer similar protection. for heavy use, i.e. daily transport of the notebook in a bag with other books and items, i would reasonably expect to get about a year of use out of the case before it starts becoming overly worn. but, then again, $50 for a year of use is pretty reasonable to me.

BOTTOM LINE: Recommended. Unbeatable dent and ding protection of the outer MBP casing. Worth the money, but not a particularly outstanding value. If you have the cash, get a neoprene sleeve for even more protection of the finish of the plastic case. If you're worried about noticeable scratches and scuffs, go with a lighter color, like red, green, clear, etc.

  • Great but not 100% perfect!!!
    By AO3VVS2WFVT1X on 2007-04-06
I bought the red see-thru Hard Case for MacBook Pro 15" because I wanted something to, at least aestethically, protect my investment from scratches.
There have been two different batches of this product shipped, one with an extra millimeter on both sides of the monitor cover and one without those millimeters.

The one sold on Amazon was the first kind, so my only complaint is that the product shipped to me is one of those that had those extra millimeter on both sides that wouldn't almost allow at all the monitor to open (not enough to see it anyway).

I had to take those extra millimeters off from both sides using a nail file.
This is a really time-consuming task!

After taking off those extra millimeters from both sides, the monitor opens fully and, it protects my investment.
One thing is true from the start though: it is easy to install, it snaps on and stays on very tight.

To take off the part of the case that protects the cover of the monitor, you have to act on the rear of the computer using your fingernails or a very thin object (not sharp or hard, or your investment will be scratched).

You can easly take the bottom part off too, but you have to act on the right part of the computer that is visible, the ports on the right side, and lift a little your computer using your fingernails or a very thin object (not sharp or hard, or your investment will be scratched).

Overall (after these modifications), I love this product!

The ports on the right are all easly accessible, including the key lock.
The ports on the left are all easly accessible too, you only have to play a very little bit with the MagSafe to insert it, but since it's magnetic, you won't really have too much problems!
On the front, the only thing that might be not 100% accessible, if you have big fingers, is the opening latch for the monitor.

  • high expectations not fullfilled
    By A3JS64FAJAXCPD on 2007-05-08
This case has provided no issues with concern to the heat generated by MBPs which was my primary concern. It does seem to have some craft issues though. It is about 3 months old and has no tabs left holding the the bottom peice on. It showed a lot of finger-prints when I first purchased it, but that is no loger a conceren since it is now covered in scratches. I do not think that I have been that hard on the case, but I do take it with me every day, and it shows. The fassests along each side of the top panel appear much more "gamer-ish" in real life, which was a bit of a disappointment as well. All in all, It seems to be doing its job, and the price was not bad, even after purchasing some industrial strength double sided tape to keep it on. I would have prefered a slightly more matte finish.

  • Good Purchase
    By A106Q1A6LGU4DP on 2007-08-15
I bought this because I'm a student, so my computer is constantly being transported from my apartment to class to the library and back again. Although I don't think that the MacBook Pro is as easy to scratch as the regular MacBook, which has a slick plastic casing, I still wanted a little something extra to protect my computer.

The cover is made of a nice thick plastic. I bought the case in green, which makes my computer look a little more unique than regular MBPs. It was very easy to put on and easy to remove, and I think that it definitely can protect he laptop very well.

The only things I don't like about the case is that it makes the computer feel about a pound heavier. Since the plastic is so thick, the top of my computer closes very quickly and a harder than normal since it is weighted down by the case.

There are some cases that don't fit well (according to the Speck website) but mine happens to fit perfectly without having to send it back or fixing it myself.

  • It holds up better than others would have you think.
    By A1O2QLPHV5F9AU on 2007-11-24
I bought this... in July I think. It looks wonderful, I get compliments all the time. Just recently it started cracking a little. It's not cheap feeling and it does protect the computer quite well. I don't really know if the price is worth it... it should cost more like $25 in my opinion... but that being said it does make your computer look "special". I like it a lot. I always can spot my computer in class if I have to step out for some reason (most of my peers have Macs as well) If you can afford it, I think it's worth getting... just be careful with your computer in general. As for the fitting issues associated with this product... I don't really know what they are talking about... maybe they fixed it? It fits my computer fine.

  • Can this REALLY protect my computer? Well...Sort of!!
    By AOKW2XLT2IVZC on 2008-07-24
I decided to buy this product after carefully reading over most every review written.

When I got the product i was shocked to see how frail and flexible the plastic really was, mixed reports of the strenght of the plastic made this aspect of the product hard to really understand. So let me say once and for all: the plastic is very weak, and seemingly offers no protection. For a comparision: it's about as strong as the plastic on a CD case. They could have made a product with a greater density and no added bulk, but what you see is what you get.

Next, as stated in many other reviews, the top right corner of the case does not clip in...at all. So there is a posibility of the case breaking if snaged (e.g. the corner is caught on a cord or something and you go to pick it up *snap*).

So what are the Ups? Well, the case does look sweet on, and I still get comments about it. The case truely does offer a unique look to the Mac Book Pro. Another up is that it will protect the bottom and top from scratches, but this is no feat. I'm almost certain that I scratched part of the case removing it from the plastic. But if it takes something of my 2.5 k computer, I'm happy. But don't expect this to make you computer drop proof. I bought another case that is really intense for that...it actually looks like an old man bag...no the look I was shooting for: " Brenthaven Edge II Sleeve (Black) for 15.4" MacBook Pro "

In concludion: if you want a unique look, scratch protection, and sub-standard plastic, this is for you. I am happy with it overall, understanding that it is NOT super strong and has a lot of potential to be a five star product. IF you want something that MAY be stronger, maybe look for a case that isn't clear, odds are: it isn't clear because the plastic is denser.

    *RumorS*

Rumor has it that the case causes overheating. I have had no trouble with anything like this YET. I can see how the case MIGHT prohibit the proper amount of ventilation when charging or watching a movie, and especially when charging AND watching a movie.

  • The most innovative case design I've seen
    By A38HJ0AZWFEDIW on 2007-01-04
I got this case for my new Core 2 Duo Macbook, after getting one for the original they did.

This case protects, and does not have any hinge issue that I've come across. It protects perfectly, and I can't tell you how many people have come up and asked me where did i get my case from!

This case makes me wonder why no one did it earlier

  • Great Product
    By A3IRGFNY8NIH26 on 2007-02-17
I have purchased both the 13" and 15" version, both are great at protecting the computers. There was an issue with the fit of 15" which Speck talks about on their web page. I sent mine in for repair and the item disappeared in the postal service. Speak was great when contacted and promply sent out a replacement at no charge. The product has protected my laptop recently from a spill on rootbeer. Without the case that this could have been unfortunate for the lap top involoved . Also fits in their canvas laptop case without removal of the hard case.

  • Would be great if it was usable
    By A24QQ2RNTSXIOR on 2007-03-10
I was excited to receive the product however it did not fit my laptop. Everytime I opened the lid a POPPING sound would occur. Turns out the rear right back panel was rubbing the lid casing. I took the laptop out and placed it back in thinking it was not properly installed, same issue.

I'm not telling anyone not to buy this product. Just be cautious.. and I hope you have better luck then I did.

  • great product
    By A19B47AXYCWSEM on 2007-07-28
Price might be a little high, but an unobtrusive and highly effective product for the mac. Now I can confidently take it anywhere, but it in any bag and not worry about it getting scratched or dented. As people have mentioned, it affects the tilting of the screen slightly, 98% not something that is noticed and is barely worth mentioning.

  • Excellent!
    By AMQY70XQQU6KQ on 2008-01-23
The speck covers are pretty darned good. The only thing that I see that should be improved on them, is the fit (it's a little loose on the back right - as I'm sure you've read.... and the front bottom, near the wrist-rest, it chafes my wrists a bit... I will probably fix that, by just filing the plastic down just a little bit.

    overall a great product.

  • Protects from scratches - a little flimsy
    By A2THV4WUT18TVM on 2007-03-04
I received one of the original manufactured items as it had the flaw where one edge was 1-2mm too wide and it caused the lid portion to catch on the base portion when opening. This is a known flaw with the early models and there are instructions on their site for fixing this rather easily (hint, use a file).

That being said, the fit otherwise is very good and easy to put on. However, it only snaps on in certain places leaving some edges and corners susceptible to catch on something and bending - although no harm comes to it or the MBP. Some of the base clips on the sides of the keyboard tend to rub your arm if your arms are placed around the lower corners of the machine. If you are wearing long sleeves, you won't notice this.

The plastic itself is sturdy and the red looks really nice (people often ask what kind of computer I have). It shows fingerprints but wipes off easily. It seems to vent well and although the MBP's sometimes run hot, I haven't noticed any heat issues with it (I was worried about this prior to purchase). You have to be careful when attaching the power cord that it makes a firm connect. If you put it in at a slight angle, it will get hung up on the case and only partially connect.

All in all, it's a good product if you want to keep the exterior of your MBP scratch free. Otherwise, it doesn't offer any other protection (i.e. from falls, liquids, etc). It also doesn't protect any of the ports etc but then again, it wasn't designed to do that.

  • shinny but rough
    By A7AUOQW0E26SD on 2007-03-26
This case looks AWESOME on the macbook, people always ask me: where did you get a red apple computer!?! looks super original, the bad thing its a rough plastic, its hard to open, to push down the screen. IT gets stuck many times becuase its not as flexible to open and close, but if u want to give it an extra something diferent, defenitely worth its money.

  • Does not fit well at all, not impressed
    By A2VYSW6T63JF2W on 2007-06-07
I bought this product to help protect my MacBook Pro when I'm lugging it around everywhere. I've already got a few small scuffs and scratches from normal wear and wanted to minimize any future ones.

When I received the item I carefully reviewed the instructions, printed on the bottom of the insert in the packaging. I carefully installed the top piece, which went okay though it wasn't as nice a fit as I had hoped.

When I installed the bottom piece, there were several areas that clearly did not fit well, and I could not get the little "tabs" to "click" into place. After carefully working with it for 10+ minutes (careful because I didn't want to scratch my $3000 machine), I thought I had it put together.

I went to open the unit, and the top and bottom piece, which appeared to be installed correctly, came in contact with one another and the top would not open. I don't know how to describe it but because the fit wasn't *perfect* it would not even open.

I know I installed it correctly, the only thing I can ascertain is that the case may have gotten a little hot in transit (it is only plastic) and warped slightly.

I think a neoprene case may be a better bet because it would stretch to fit.

I returned the Spek case to Amazon and got a refund.

  • I am not able to remove the hard case from MacBook Pro
    By A2Z78I2972Y9IX on 2007-06-26
I was having some problem with my MacBook Pro, and I was instructed by Apple Service Representative to remove the battery from the battery compartment which is on the bottom of the MacBook Pro, and hit the "shift" button for two seconds, and replace the battery to correct the problem. But, since I have attached the Speck MacBook Pro 15" See-Thru Hard Case onto my MacBook Pro, I find it impossible to remove the bottom piece of the hard case to expose the battery compartment. I know the only way to get to the battery compartment is to crack and break the bottom piece of the hard case, and I do not want to sacrifice my hard case which I just purchased recently. Can you help me and give me instruction on how to remove the bottom piece of the hard case without breaking it? If its possible, then, I can give this item a different rating! At this time, its a 1 star or less!

  • Modification needed
    By A2VF3FOJ19UJT9 on 2007-07-13
The case fit my Macbook Pro well, except that when I would lift the screen, the top half of the case would snag on the bottom half at the right hinge, lifting it off the computer. As another reviewer mentioned, this can be fixed by shaving off a little of the Speck's plastic, but for such an expensive item this should not be necessary.

  • Speck MacBook Pro 15" See-Thru Hard Case - Black (like Red) is Quite Impressive
    By A1OPMV6M4OHWUJ on 2007-07-25
To see that Speck so perfectly manufactured a protective case to EXACTLY fit the diminensions and to leave cut-out openings for all of the inputs and outputs of my MacBook Pro 15-inch was really quite impressive -- and such a relief.

In fact, the Speck See-Thru Hard Case -- also allowing allowing for the really cool glowing Apple logo to shine through the translucent casing -- gives it a "seamless look," where you don't even know it is a casing and is natural extension of what appears that Apple may have manufactured this as part of the MacBook Pro! It even fools me when I look at it!

Most importantly, though, the Speck See-Through Hard Case -- in whatever color you get it -- provides your MacBook with great snap-on, durable protection.

Certainly, I would again consider Speck hard cases for any other MacBook or other PC-based notebooks I might buy in the future. Again, it is really gratifying to see that a company like Speck does its homework and builds case to fit notebooks to their exact dimensions! Keep up the good work!

  • Good
    By AS5VXE6M0QIDZ on 2007-07-27
Exactly as described, timely delivery! performs exactly as described. Minor blemish...magnet piece on one of the 4 corners was missing. Nothing to interfere with the product performance, but missing all the same.

  • MacBook Pro See-Thru Case

I was a little disappointed with the fit of the case. Even after fitting it on, to open the case requires a lot more effort, I have to turn the case up to get to the button. Maybe I'll get use to it since I only had the case for a week, but a butoon extention would have been appropriate. I'm confident that it will provide greater protection for the laptop, but would only give it a "2" for value. For nearly $50, I expected more.

  • Great idea, lackluster execution

This case is average at best. It scratches very easily, does not hold on to the laptop via the clips all that firmly and generally feels cheap and flimsy.

If I were to buy again, I'd try another product.
