Excellent Version of the Autobot Leader By A103KP5IOW1SFI on 2007-06-27
Received the movie verison of Optimus Prime from my father as a father's day gift, quite apropos as he spent a good chunk on the orignal transformers for me 20 years ago. This is an excellent transformer, both as a robot and as a truck. As a truck, I much appreciated the rubber tires and very sturdy constuction. The robot mode is very detailed, with many articulation points. Battery-powered lights and sounds are a nice touch. The only con is the complexity of the transformation. Maybe I am getting old, but the first time, it took over an hour to get the transformation right. Hasbro using picture-only instuctions did not make this any easier.
Get something else for your young kids By A17LCDEFG5OXSQ on 2007-06-30
Don't get me wrong. I love this figure. It's one of the best Primes I've ever seen. Both his robot and vehicle forms capture the film Prime accurately and he's well crafted. However, while he makes for an excellent posed figure, which is my intent and the intent of many who collect, he makes for a poor children's toy.
He is very difficult to transform and you'll have to struggle with Hasbro's poor directions to get it right. And you'll want to do it yourself so you can show your kids how to do it. He seems more durable then the other movie figures out there which is good because rough play from children can quickly lead to the demise of those figures.
If you have an older child or a child who cares well for his (or her!) figures then this might be a good purchase but at $[...] be very reluctant about picking this up for your kids as it is not indestructable.
Overall? These figures are fantastic for collectors and if that's you then I recommend this Prime figure highly. However, if you're looking to pick up a toy for your young kids based on the hot new movie then I recommend looking at some of the other options available (Hard I know, especially if your child asks for this figure directly!)

Latest Optimus Prime from the upcoming move By A2SA0LDVZ8JW7I on 2007-06-04
From the box, the toy looks a little bulky, and it is, but not in ways that you'd really imagine, it snaps apart just about everywhere, and it's hard to tell whether or not you've broken something. But, in robot or vehicle mode, this thing looks cool. The flames don't really matter to me, it might even make Optimus look better, but he really transforms, and it's quite spectacular. At the end of his transformation to autobot mode, he has this automorph thing that slides a couple of pieces into place at once and it makes it seem as though you're actually holding animation.
The product listing says ages 5-12... Not really. It says on the box that it is a level 4 difficulty to transform, and don't underestimate that. I barely managed to get the thing transformed in under a halfan hour, but maybe you'll have more luck than I did. The elctronic horns and flashy lights are really just a small annoyance to me, I didn't really need them, but I don't mind. Also, the thing is heavy compared to most other transformers toys. I've only bought the deluxes and they are nothing compared to the weight of Prime. So, if you're like me, and just love transformers, then you'll love this, but if you have a child who thinks it's cool(which it is), be prepared to transform.
PROS
1 It's Optimus Prime
2 Both robot mode and Vehicle mode look nice
3 Transformation works well
4 Ion cannon fires, folds in, is safely detatchable
5 It is sturdy, and a lot of fun
CONS
1 It will scare you, making you think you've already broken your latest toy
2 It is a tad pricy at $40
3 Putting finishing touches on the vehicle mode can be a pain
All in all, this is a great transformers toy, and all Transfans should like it, but it's okay if you don't.
Finally A Transformer Worth The Money.... By A3V1OS1K1UGU51 on 2007-06-07
When my four year old pointed this out to me during an episode of Ben Ten, I said, 'Okay, we'll see.' Well, I saw the price tag and attempted to get him to pick a less expensive one. I don't mind paying the money if he'll actually play with the thing, but what usually happens is he gets frustrated and the toy gets the 'WALL TREATMENT'. I took a chance on it (as if I really had a choice) and I have to admit this thing is really put together well. The pieces are still connected in many places by the 'ball and socket' method, but its been manufactured very well. I would say that four years old is probably the cut-off age for playing with this unit (of course that always varies). I suppose I could ramble on but the best thing I can say about it is that he hasn't put it down in two days. I can't recall any other Transformer holding his attention like this one and I must confess, I've been playing with it as well.
A Surprisingly Good Optimus Prime By A5CMFA67UFQTP on 2007-06-11
When I first saw this latest Optimus Prime on the shelf, I wasn't sure what to think of him. He looked a bit bulky and I was concerned that a toy based on the movie would have a rushed and simplistic feel to him.
I was mistaken.
Optimus Prime is bulky, but he's also a pretty sturdy, solid figure. Of all the Optimus Prime toys released over the years, this one stands as the tallest with the exception of the Masterpiece Optimus Prime.
The figure has a fairly elaborate transformation that's both clever and siple enough to do, but also fairly lengthy. My first attempt at transforming him took what seemed like half an hour. I can now transform him pretty quickly. There are a couple of steps that cause other pieces to automatically transform themselves (his feet and his head/torso) which are all quite slick.
None of Optimus Prime's gimmicks are obstructive. He has lights and sounds -- lighting up his eyes and windshield -- as well as a flip-out cannon and as stated before a couple auto-transforming pieces. All of it is well implemented, and even the two AA batteries are cleverly hidden in his gas tanks.
There's plenty of articulation to be had as well. Most of his major joints rachet and hold their place effectively, and each of his fingers can be moved individually.
His vehicle mode is pretty massive, feels solid and looks pretty cool. It even has rubber tires and some good weight to it.
There are some minor complaints about the toy. His hood transformation is a bit tricky, and overall his transformation could be a bit much for younger kids. Still, he's worth the price and probably the best Optimus Prime figure to come out in a while.
- A "Prime" Action Figure
     By A1RRLGRKVI7U4M on 2007-06-24
This version of Optimus Prime stands relatively tall (in robot mode) at 1 foot in height, which is about the standard height of past Prime figures. Instructions MUST be consulted when transforming the figure, as it is not an easy process. However, for those who already own several figures of Optimus Prime, some of the transformation sequences (such as, the head going into the upper torso), are pretty much the same.
The color decals are beautifully done in red and blue. Since this is Optimus Prime, it would have been better if the figure was done in a die-cast metal finish, instead of plastic. But the colors still stand out.
All in all, this is a great figure. Some parts do detatch, and deform quite easily, so be careful when handling.
As with all leader class Transformers, I CERTAINLY WOULD NOT recommend this toy for small children. So much workmanship has been applied to this transformer, that carelessly "playing" and damaging it would be a blatant crime. This figure stands mostly as a collector's item. That said, serious Transformers collectors NEED to add this figure to their collection!
- Toy Not Suitable For Child Under 12 Yrs. Of Age
     By A2IQG2D41DDXRA on 2007-10-29
I gave this toy to my grandson for his 8th birthday because he is crazy about Transformers. I was not happy to see his frustration when he could not transform the toy from one thing to another. I had my daughter try to work with it (she is 31 yrs. & had Transformers as a child) & she could not even figure it out. It clearly states on the box that this toy is for children 5 yrs. of age & up. You need to change your label. I spent over $150 on 4 Transformers for my grandson & I would have liked him to be able to enjoy it. This is definitely a collector's item for older people.
- Try to test one of these out before purchasing - MAJOR factors to consider
     By A1ER5AYS3FQ9O3 on 2007-07-04
First of all, for those of you reading THIS review and who also intend to review this, could you let us know whether you are an adult or child and also if you played with Transformer toys as a child. That would be helpful
This review is co-written,partially from the perspective of a former collector of Transformer toys. His advice? This toy would be too hard for younger kids and he didn't find it even all that easy as an adult. Sometimes he couldn't tell if pieces were supposed to snap off or if he'd broken something. He admitted, however, that he was "out of practice". From MY perspective, I can remember him practicing for hours to get a transformation just right, especially on the larger figures (like this one).
The Transformers - The Movie (20th Anniversary Special Edition)
- Movie Optimus Prime
     By A900XEJU341U5 on 2007-06-25
Optimus Prime has never looked better, apart from the original. His "auto-morph" feature is cool, and the electronic noises and lights are cool as well. This toy should appeal to collectors, and kids who just want to play with Optimus. I am very excited to see the movie, and this toy is making the wait worth while. I hope this review was helpful, because he certainly was worth the money for me.
- A great Transformer to own
     By ANT1JN1R58RVR on 2007-07-14
You know how after you convert a Transformer back and forth a few times, the pieces tend not to sit flush with each other in vehicle mode? Not a problem here. Movie Leader Optimus fits tight after multiple transformations, in fact it's the best fit I've seen in an complex Transformer. I have two of the Takara Binaltech metal Transformers (Wheeljack BT-14 Mustang and Smokescreen BT-07 Subaru WRX Impreza) and they don't fit together as nearly as snug as Movie Leader Optimus. The horn and window lights are a nice touch, and the retractable head mechanism is cool. If I was forced to complain about something I'd wish all the gray plastic pieces were painted chrome. The only piece that doesn't have a place to attach in truck mode (read: what you will lose if you're not careful) is the blue laser bolt that comes out of Optimus's pistol.
This is a Transformer to buy....maybe two, one to keep in the box and one to play with.
- Tranformers Optimus Prime
     By A3E2OLXR0RHF3U on 2007-07-16
I bought this item for a grown up son, his brother broke his original one when they were younger, it was a great toy, and still is a great toy, but I would advise it for older children, as younger children get frustrated transforming them, and can break them.
- Beautiful Truck - Lousy Robot
     By A1OD12WATUM1GL on 2007-08-01
I bought this Transformer for my 5 year-old grandson. It came in the Robot form. Just getting it out of the box was a chalenge because it was wired in a manner that made removing the twist ties without a wire cutter very difficult. Transforming it into the truck was very complicated and it took a while for my son and I to do it with the cartoon picture instructions provided. (I am an engineer and my son is a computer genius.) Once transformed into a truck, my grandson played with it for a while and tried to change it back to a robot with no sucess. I found it difficult to transform it even after I had done it myself once. He may play with the truck sometimes, but probably not the robot. He really loved the battery operated horn and headlights.
I reccoment buying a truck and a robot separately for a child. It would be far cheaper.
- New Movie, New Toy, New Generation of Fans
     By A2BYL02VRPR3MJ on 2007-06-04
Without a doubt I was orginally skeptical of the new designs for the movie. I was a hardcore fan since the beginning back in the 80's, and the way Bay described the Transformers originally made me wary, but now that I've seen the previews, and especially the toys, I have been shown the light.
And for all of you weirdos who are talking about the interpretation of the movie character, you're missing the mark. This is a TOY REVIEW, not a movie one.
Let's start with the cons. While I still am not a huge fan of the flames, the auto-morph technology is rather cool, although it does kind of suck there's only about two (if you consider the way the legs fold one) automorphs on the toy. The way automorphing was played up I wasn't sure what to expect, but I was expecting more. Also, the size. Always size has been a problem with the Transformers toys. Bigger and shinier, the better it looks on display, but try to get it home and play with it with four or even just one more? It's a disaster. However, since I'm just a collector, it works just fine for me. That, and the different Transformers aren't relative in size. Optimus Prime and Megatron are huge, while Bumblebee and Bonecrusher are the same size -when in the preview, Bonecrusher and Optimus are clearly matched in size, and Bumblebee far smaller. Not since the Beast Wars series have the toys been even close in relative size.
But now for the pro's. It looks great. Hands down, save for the Masterpiece Optimus, this is the best looking yet. Both in truck and robot mode, it looks the spitting image of the film, and while the toy may be large, it is fun to move around and play with still, and very easy to pose. Next pro, the automorph feature. I know I had it in the cons, but it is a good start. The head popping up is rather cool, even with the sound effects, and you can tell it's the start of something bigger to come. Another pro is the stability in each form. It easily stands up, and doesn't want to Tranform on it's own. This may sound strange, but some of the toys wanted parts to move when it was in either car or robot mode due to messed up molds and construction of the toy. This has no such proble. Best pro ever, though, it can't flip down the mouthpiece to show the "lips" of Optimus. Why Bay put that in, I'll never know....
All in all, an amazing toy, and a good interpretation of a classic icon.
- Optimal Optimus
     By A1TBQHQWSVZKYB on 2007-08-12
This is the most awesomest opto ever! I especially love his groin plate. It's solid and thick and didn't bend even when i put all my weight onto it... Best groin plate ever!
- Optimus Prime
     By A2G34NU9KV8OH8 on 2007-08-23
My sis has this toy she doesn't use it much (so it;s basically mine he he) .It is pretty cool I have megatron as well they are both equal but optimus prime is a little harder than megatron to transform since you have to position him so perfect. There are a couple of optimus prime's like the voyager one trust me it's not all that good, and the robo vision one it's equal to the movie leader one. but whichever one you buy don't put a dent in your wallet and buy it from amazon. It won't kill you to wait a little for target, wal mart or where ever to restock on their O.P's.
- Great Prime Figure
     By A24CPA8Y1OW7OB on 2007-06-13
I just picked up this version of optimus prime and yes he is a very good prime since the g1 and the cybertron version of optimus prime he is very sturdy and u need to be careful with the smoke stacks there not 100% sturdy mine right smokestack off of my prime broke off when i was transformering him to vehicle mode and he one not to be played with since he take a while to get into vehicle mode but it still a good transformer for any die-hard Transformer fan.
- Pro genocide Optimus prime.
     By A3SM02Y7VRVCVV on 2007-07-05
I never thought Optimus Prime was the kind of guy who would commit genocide to stop Megatron. I get that stopping Megatron is important but I don't think it is worth destroying an entire race's ability to reproduce. If one could have stopped Hitler early but plunged the earth into a state very much like in the film "Children of Men" without the pregnant lady, I don't think it would have been a good idea. Think about it. a hundred years later the human race is gone. So I guess Mike Bay thinks that my childhood hero is either amazingly stupid of cares very very little for his own kind. This was not the Prime I remember. The original Optimus Prime was a hero. Mike Bays Prime is traitor to his own kind.
- WOW!
     By on 2007-07-25
This is a cool prime. Once you transform him a couple of times he gets easy to transform. I got it today at target and it was the LAST ONE LEFT! Definatley get this if you want an example of an exellent transformers toy.
Transformers Rule!
- Not your Daddy's Optimus Prime!
     By A33I90W6BPL4GA on 2007-08-03
This is an awesome toy. Good quality, good materials, and very good fit and finish. The attention to detail is pretty amazing on this autobot. I will agree with other reviews that this really shouldn't be for kids 5 and under. I would recommend this toy for an 8-10 year old.
Unlike the old transformers of yesteryear, this one is VERY difficult to transform, at least the first couple of times. But that is also where the fun is. the instructions are so-so, and therefore you will have to do some trial and error to get it right.
good luck finding this toy; I went to 6 stores until I finally found one (the last one, too). Do not overpay for this toy though. It retails for 39.99 USD. One last thing: if you buy it, play with it; it is a real shame to keep this one in the box.
- OVER PRICED!
     By A1AGJ3ZQML8EGZ on 2007-08-07
This product is too overpriced, I mean, 84.95 when you can go to your local store and get it for $39.99, Who ever set this price is really ripping the paying costumer off! as for the toy, well its just simply great!
- a must own
     By A3J5WEY9BS9EFA on 2007-08-07
I think that this is a great new toy of optimus prime
but i dont think i would be paying the price it is going for now
I still thought $40 was wow not cheap but worth it.
the megatron toy is not easy to change either so i just leave it in its standing postion.
when i try to change it from standing form to truck wow it takes some time even though i have had transformers for a long time.
I just leave them in vechicle mode much easier
WEll I see nothing wrong with metal toys which were made back in the 80's and now they are all plastic boo. Toy recalls on everything these days oh wow.
well transformers are not being recalled so that is a good thing
a must own toy but watch out for the price.
- THE #1 COOLEST TRANSFORMER EVER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
     By on 2007-08-24
This is a super fun, cool looking, very posable, best Optimus Prime in the whole world! Its soooo amazing how his transformation works! it so complex and fun and not so hard! His truck looks awesome! But his robot even awesomer! And hes really detailed! I love this figure! hes my favorite transformer toy! (right over the Megatron!) this figures is soooo worth the money (but not on this site! I got him for [...]$ nothing more!) This is an AMAZINGLY AWESOME TOY you MUST! buy him!!!!!!!
- Way over priced!
     By AAEJK0LZJ2PVE on 2007-08-27
Look for this product somewhere else! I purchased it for my son about a week ago for 32.50. It sickens me how certain individuals will jack up the price of toys just because they know it is in high demand. Shame on you!!
- Transformers Movie Leader Optimus Prime
     By A18YSASJZT3WYN on 2007-09-17
Great Toy! My grandson, age 8 just loved it! He spends hours reshaping this constructive toy into a semi and back to Optimus Prime. The light add a realistic adventure for him. Thanks for this awesome toy.
- That is retarded
     By A19OPXEXK5SNSC on 2007-07-12
Guy that said prime was a traitor to his own kind, he wasnt he did it to save all the other races in the galaxy and i guess he thought making his race not reproduce was less of a loss than to let all other races die
- Optimus Prime. not like the original but still tons of fun
     By A3BTKMRPQBWSOJ on 2007-08-12
about 18 years ago i had the original die cast optimus prime. this had to be purchased as although im now well grown up, im still a big kid.
First impressions:
This is not a kids toy. its for grown-ups, fans of the original. It feels sturdy enough, but drop it a few times and i can see arms and legs breaking off.
Transformation:
It took me about 30 mins to do this first and second time, but its getting easier and i can now do it without the instructions. you have to force some pieces and feel you will break it at times, but its sturdy enough not to break. very tough to transform though . no way i could have done this as a kid, even as a 12 year old I think this would have been a challenge
Value.
Definately not worth the cost. too plasticy. i would have rathered it to be diecast rather than plastic. should be at least 20-30 dollars cheaper
overall.
Great toy for grownups. this will be on my desk at work, or on the mantle piece beside my treebeard and other such models. not for kids though
- Best Transformers toy EVER!!
     By AXF7HOXQDTVOQ on 2007-09-11
Couldn't buy a better Transformers toy. It's likeness to the movie Optimus Prime is great.
- THE toy to have if you love transformers!
     By A3QZTMHQ1XZ8PM on 2007-12-04
My sons are 9 and 5 and they both love Transformers. My 9 year old can spend hours transforming it and all of the other Transformers. My 5 year old sometimes needs help finishing but otherwise he can do the transformations as well, without looking at the instructions.
I think they are very durable considering how many parts there are to move around and how much my boys like to bang them together when they are "fighting". If a piece does come off, which is pretty rare, they are fairly easy to pop back on. I like that each transformer comes with graphics on how to transform them, but like I said, my boys don't need the instructions. It's pretty amazing how many parts there are on the toy and how they all twist and turn and turn into something different.
If your child truly loves Transformers, they will like any size transformer you get them - it doesn't have to be this Movie Leader size. My sons also have the little movie legend size transformers and they love playing with them too - they are a lot easier to carry in the pockets too. But if they are die-hard fans, they will appreciate the leader size because it is the biggest and transforms the most.
If your budget is tight, it may take awhile but wait until Amazon or one of their national sellers like Target or Hasbro have this available because they will only charge you the retail price of $39.99 whereas some of these sellers are currently charging over $80 for the same toy - ridiculous!!! But I have found the amount of money I spent on Transformers to be worth it - they're one of the few toys that my sons will play with again and again and they've held up extremely well from the rough play and constant transforming. They play with the old ones from a few years ago just as much as they play with the new ones.

Great toy, it is made very strong. But it should be for kids a bit older than 5 years of age. I am 33 years old and had fun putting this together, but I could see this a bit tougher for a kid, all in all it is built great.
