Silicone enhanced!Learn the fate of Whitey poke fun at Mitzi's chest or follow along on Ench-Man's quests - it's your choice! Wanna play a game of hide and drink? Falling off the wagon is always better with company! Shin chan: The show with very little adventure but plenty of action?!Contains episodes 1-13Format: DVD MOVIE Genre: ANIMATION/ADULT SWIM UPC: 704400042201 Manufacturer No: 1-4210-0009-1

If the antics of Kenny, Cartman and the rest of the South Park boys have grown too stale for your tastes, there's plenty of appalling kid behavior on display in Shin Chan, Adult Swim's raucous redubbing of the popular Japanese anime series. The North American version follows the essence of the source material: Shin Chan is a five-year-old Japanese boy with a knack for making his parents, teachers and friends crazy with highly inappropriate statements and behavior (most notably a penchant for nudity and shaking his butt). But the scripts by anime vets Jared Hedges, Joel Bergin and Alex Muniz (with contributions by acclaimed comic book creators Evan Dorkin and Sarah Dyer on the first six episodes) spin the basic premise into surreal and decidedly adult areas (let's just say that bodily functions, aberrant sexuality, and a cornucopia of mental illnesses are the order of the day). Characters are also tweaked for shock effect--the school's principal, a fairly benevolent figure in the original anime, is now a bizarre half-Gypsy with a sordid past, while Tooru, Shin Chin's nervous nellie of a pal, is now Georgie, a five-year-old neo-con. The absurdity of the dubbing is peppered with frequent pop culture references, which can grow wearying after a while, but the sheer rudeness of the storylines generally overpowers any rough patches.

The DVD feature 13 of the first season's 26 episodes, which are spread over two discs; extras include lively commentary on Episode 4 ("Get Your Hands Off My Happy Cake!") with line producer Laura Bailey, who also voices Shin Chan, along with director Zach Bolton and recording engineer Peter Hawksworth. Series fans will undoubtedly be delighted by "From the Bowels of the Booth," which offers a battery of exceptionally crude alternate line readings from various episodes, as well as an episode with its original Japanese language track (subtitles are included). Vocal talent auditions and trailers for Funinmation's other anime DVD releases, including Witchblade, One Piece and Full Metal Panic round out the supplemental features. -- Paul Gaita MPN: 1-4210-0009-1 - UPC: 704400042201

  • Comedic Anime With an Offensive Twist

    By A3GBNWTS34ARED on 2007-04-27
Shin Chan is an anime in Japan for kids, however, the adapted series for America is far from it. Adult Swim and Funimation re-wrote the dialogue of the show to suit the viewers of Adult Swim. Cultural references are also changed to things Americans can relate to. This box set is the collection of the six "test" episodes as well as the sixteen episodes Adult Swim picked up to complete the full season. This dvd set is defidently a must buy if you do not offend easily.

  • To be a man you must have honor!

    By A1CDH6FBMM5FL6 on 2007-07-31
I love, love, love this show! I used to watch the Japanese show when I was younger. Now that I'm older (in my twenties), I'm fairly certain that I would still like the original version, but this new adult swim version is so much more entertaining for me. It's hilariously offensive and definitely adult! It's a great show and much less offensive than South Park. Shin Chan rocks!

  • Twisted, Funny, & Badly Drawn!

    By A1XRYXLYAEY3D5 on 2007-07-22
I always watch the TV show whenever it's on [adult swim], & I'm really excited that a DVD of it is coming out. I haven't seen the original Japanese children's show, but I'd really like to. In my opinion, it's one of the most entertaining shows I've seen, no matter how badly drawn it is. I can't wait for the DVD.

  • crayon shin chan

    By A85IGR4AZSPRL on 2007-07-23
I do agree that the english dubbing takes away a lot of the humor in Shin Chan. I have seen/read Shin Chan in chinese, and it was funnier. (I think translating from Japanese to China is much easier than to english, there is much less lost in translation in the process).

I have started watching SHin Chan on Adult Swim, and although it would be better if it's subtitled, it is better than this show not available in English at all. My husband can now watch it with me, for him, this is the only chance to watch this funny show as he dosen't understand Chinese not Japanese. So I have to say, yes FUNamation could leave the show alone and just sub it instead of dub it, but it is better than nothing. I will buy this dvd set anyway, it is still funny, even if you are not Japanese/Chinese who can watch the originals.

  • DVD technical details not as described

    By A2NUZ6SKOWRGM6 on 2008-05-15
This is a review of just the dvd disc itself. While Shinchan is silly and hilarious to watch, it did not include the japanese audio nor did it have subtitles as described.

  • Bringing families together.
    By A23X6IOWOGV336 on 2007-08-02
I love this show. It hits you with joke after joke, with references to honor, bunny punching, and other things that do not go over my head. The closing theme song on Adult Swim is great, I dance to it everytime, I can not tell you how much my wife enjoys that. I love low-brow humor. I remember when the Fox network first aired, bringing low-brow to the masses en mass. This will fit nicely with my Married...With Children, and non-existant The Gary Shandling Show DVD's. My sister who I do not see very often saw it once with me and now is hooked. This show has brought a family together. And for that I am full of happiness. Thank you Shin-Chan makers, Adult Swim staffers, and of course Gary Shandling.

  • English Dubbed
    By A29CY2MTKGC2FN on 2008-03-26
This DVD set from FUNimation will only be in ENGLISH not Japanese with subtitles. Personally I think the Japanese version is better. Why did Funimation re-write the script? Did they think American viewers wouldn't get the jokes? So they could show it on Adult Swim and make it more crude? Lame excuses if you ask me. 99.9% of the Anime you can buy has the option of watching it in English or Japanese. FUNimation, you dropped the ball on this one.

  • Number One Funny Show! Number 10 DVD Rendering!
    By A2FV7Y8OMFHE6T on 2008-05-17
"Shin chan" is a hilarious, off-beat show that far surpasses anything done by South Park or anything else seen on Adult Swim or the Comedy Channel! It's rude, obnoxious, raucous, MOST inappropriate yet all without losing the basic innocence of a 5 year old boy. Can't beat that! Hurry up with Season 1, Part 2!!! If I have to I'll go on a pee strike!!! I like the magnificent blend of "American" humor with the Japanese backdrop. There are SO many Japanese references here that make me homesick for Japan!

The problems I have with the DVD itself are the lack of subtitles for the AS/FUNimation soundtrack and the absence of the original Japanese soundtrack with English translation. I know it's a totally different show, but I wouldn't mind having that! Heck, I wouldn't mind having a track with the original kid's version dubbed into English so my niece and nephews could watch it! I let them watch the first 5 minutes but my brother heard the dialogue and that was the end of that! My other problems is the censoring..."Shin chan" is rated TV-MA, same as "The Shield", one of the most violent, profanity-laden shows on cable; why is it being censored at all??? It's not like they're dropping the F-Bomb everywhere...and in a couple spots they censored Shin's "elephant" but not in others, WTF? Sometimes it seems like FUNimation was in a hurry to get this out to it's fans or wasn't sure who the audience was; IT'S RATED TV-MA!!! YOUR AUDIENCE IS ADULTS (more or less)!!! NO MORE CENSORING!!! The commentary was worthless. Very few people seem to understand the purpose of the commentary is to comment on the show, not on what you had for lunch or what your philosophy on life is. If you need an example of a great commentary, I refer you back to "the Shield".

So, other than the lack of subtitles, the worthless commentary, and the censorship, this is a fantastic DVD! I still give it 5 stars!

  • Slightly short of perfect
    By A1BY4YODW6M4PA on 2008-05-21
I love Shin Chan, and would recommend this product to anybody with a sense of humor. I have some minor gripes, though.

It very plainly says "Uncensored" on the back of the box, but I heard probably two dozen bleeps. Somebody at Funimation really dropped the ball on this one.

Also there are no subtitles or closed captioning. I have partial hearing loss and it's hard for me to understand characters with higher voices, so I always have subtitles going when I watch on Adult Swim.

Final point. I was really hoping to see the behind the scenes footage they had on adultswim.com - that was much better than the extras we got in this package.

I really hope somebody from Funimation reads this stuff. Looking forward to Season 1 Part 2 and Season 2. I'll be preordering those as well.

  • I thought if I put the toaster in the freezer, we could make Poptartsicles
    By A1DY7SWOKFSIY1 on 2008-03-05
This show is so funny! The first time I saw it I was just flipping through the channels and ended up in the middle of the "To be a man you must have honor..." chant. I just stared dumbly at the screen trying to figure out what the heck this was. Its a bit odd at times, but that just makes it funnier! A definite must buy for those who aren't easily offended and like wacky humor. Its hard to believe some of the things that come out of these kids mouths, but its tons of fun to watch! This is definitely going to be in our collection!

  • Japanese South Park
    By A16TRIQ9CTGHD3 on 2008-04-12
If Anime re-writes could only be as good as this!! I watched with apprehension, and after the 1st episode became a "fan-boy" of the show. The 'american-ized' version is SO darn funny!!! OMG!! I'd put it up against South Park anytime!!! When the DVD is released you can bet yer mother's teet, I'll be buying it!! I've never laughed SO hard (it hurts!!) about a cartoon!!

  • must have for anime or animation lover
    By A1NABAWKJFIRWB on 2008-05-01
The first time I saw the show on Adult Swim, I couldn't stop watching in both shock and fascination in waiting to hear what Shin would say next. From his infamous @$$ dance, his constant reference to mr. elephant, making fun of his mother Mitzi's flat chest, his blase atittude towards Ai's obsession with him, and his equally bizarre friends (Penny and happiness bunny, Ai and Penny as adopted sisters comparing themselves to Ashlee and Jessica Simpson) I can go on and on, but you just have to watch it to believe it!!!

  • Awsome show
    By A3EJUY4TX3UDAN on 2008-05-11
I too ran across it while channel surfing, and I now curse the days I watch late night TV and miss it. Defiantly offensive, kind of like south park but for some sick reason its funnier, and stupid as hell at the same time.

I am so pre-ordering this, and I recomend it to anyone with a less sensitive sense of humor.

  • freakin awesome
    By A2R6688OH0M12T on 2008-05-23
adult swims shin chan is well worth the money, funimation nailed the re writes. dont listen to the people who tell you the japenese version is better it just isnt. the voice actors, writers overall feel is so much better. one word of caution shin chan is Contagious, ripe with raunchy adult humor you'll be in stitches.

  • Shin Chan!!
    By ASAN0T7Z99EQ8 on 2008-06-07
When I first saw this on Adult Swim, I was mystified by the number of recent American cultural references - I didn't know anything about the show, so wasn't aware that it had been practically rewritten for American audiences before being re-dubbed. I've seen several reviews that prefer it in the original Japanese, but I have to wonder if it shouldn't just be considered a different show all together. I personally love the American version - the voice acting, the characters, and the scripts are fantastic, it's hard to believe that you're not watching it in its original incarnation. It was a quick addiction for me, and I can't help but recommend it to everyone - if you can make it through your first episode, right through to the end credits, you'll likely be hooked, and you'll be humming the tune to Party Party for the rest of the day.

  • Not what I expected
    By AKIVXMEWU8LL5 on 2008-06-26
I am a huge fan of animé and enjoy a wide variety. My first huge disappointment was the lack of an original language soundtrack w/ English subtitles. What's even worse is that all the jokes and cultural references have been Americanized. Why bother to watch an animated Japanese show when it just sounds like any number of equally lame American shows? And, yes, I do enjoy various animated American shows, too. The final blow was that I just didn't find the jokes to be particularly funny and no, it's not because they're too crude. I do enjoy South Park after all. :)

  • Original is better...
    By AWHEK7BCC5WDP on 2008-07-07
Well, too bad. Here we go again. I'm sure it won't bother you, but it bothers me and my wife. Why is it American products always have to screw it up? RE-DIALOG?! I'll take the original, and I'm going over to "CD JAPAN" right now to order it. The least they could have done is put the Japanese original vocal dub to the thing. I need no references to lame pop-culture junk. Ho hum...ripped off again. Evidently we can't handle jokes and humor from another culture, we need things that fit our small little world view; in this case, humor. It's like chopping up hot dogs into your sushi...do yourself a favor: go with the original Japanese version, unless that sort of thing doesn't matter to you.

  • Insanely Stupid, But In A Good Way
    By A1KFOPHNA1HWMW on 2008-05-04
If you don't mind incredibly rude and raunchy humor and can afford to lose 87% of your brain cells then you may enjoy this as much as I do. I'm excited about all of the episodes coming to DVD but the one I want the most is the "Star Wars" episode so if anyone reading this has any authority please release it in a box set!

  • Could be better!
    By A2L2WMYM6B81XD on 2008-06-02
I waited eagerly for this to be released on dvd, and while it is funny and offensive i found i preferred the tv version that was on jetix formerly know as toonami. The dvd set had different voice actors for the characters, and the names of the kids were different, and the credits have been changed. If Funimation wanted to make the dvd set along those lines then that would be cool but i guess i'll have to make do with the current version as is......

  • Shin Chan..
    By AZ3M8O9F8SHC7 on 2008-06-06
Such an underrated show in my opinion because at the moment this is my favorite show.. This is a 2 disk DVD with a total of 13 half hour shows..The was a good, decent amount of extras on it too, especially a full Japanese version of a show, just to show what a great job they did taking mediocre Japanese comedy to hilarious English translations. However this dvd is just part one of season one, so don't expect all episodes to be on there as i have anticipated.
