Sony DVP-NS57P/S Progressive Scan DVD Player, SilverxToo low to display
    (82 reviews)
Best Price: Too low to display
The DVP-NS57P/S DVD player features Precision Cinema Progressive technology, providing sharper images for a better viewing experience. Unlike other DVD players that detect image changes at the Scan line level-Sony's Precision Cinema Progressive (PCP) system detects them at the Pixel level. This results in images closer to the original source data, because separate, optimized algorithms are used to handle the differing Pixel behavior. Separate algorithms are also used to process the moving and still parts of an image, resulting in sharp backgrounds with moving objects that are free from motion artifacts. Sony's Precision Drive III mechanism is also included, which helps maximize the performance of DVD collections by reading data even on some physically "warped" discs. Other benefits include fast/slow playback with sound, and custom parental control.

Great DVD player for the price By A5D6BFW438L25 on 2007-04-16
I've had this DVD player a few weeks now and have watched a couple dozen DVDs. None have given me any problems, including scratched DVDs and DVDs burnt on cheap media which would freeze and skip on my old econo DVD player.
The pros: The user interface is excellent. It seems solid, quick to respond, and well made. I love the speed up/slow down feature, very cool. It's sleek and compact looking, excellent remote control response range.
The cons: The remote will not program for too many TVs, there's only about a dozen codes and none of them work for my older TV. I'm sure it's fine if you're TV is from the last 5 years or so, or a very common older one though.
This model is one of very few DVD players I looked at that wasn't made in China, definitely a plus in my book (although many other Sonys are).
I can't yet speak for long-term use, but overall, I'm very impressed.
Wow! By ADAASOYZ1TOMW on 2007-06-30
I can't believe people are writing negative reviews on this player at all. I have seen some of them, and quite frankly some of them are just plain absurd. What do you want out of a sub $60 player?
It has played every dvd i have burned flawlessly. No pixelization as you might get with some older or cheaper players. It also played a random Mp3 disk i put together with no problem...and even listed the tracks.
The picture and audio are fantastic as well. Sure it doesn't have a ton of "bells and whistles" to it, but i was just looking for a basic player that would just play my dvd's flawlessly and this player does a great job of it. If you want a dvd player without the high price tag that will deliver great picture and sound, this is the one for you!
Excellent Value...Worth a lot more! By A2H7RTBE6EYD4V on 2007-08-21
I am the type of person who likes to get the most value for the money I spend. This Sony definitely gives you the most value for what you get!
We have a room for the kids and they love to watch Disney DVDs and can sit for hours entertained and immersed in a good video. Superb video and audio quality makes it more enjoyable for them.
I decided to get a good versatile DVD Player that would provide the best picture and audio quality for the children. I did not want to obtain the higher end dvd players with 780p, 1080i, or 1080p high definition because the television in the childrens play room is only capable of 480p at best. Therefore, if you are looking for a DVD player to use for your 1080i, or 1080p flat screen TV...then do not read any further...this DVD player is not for you. Always remember your high definition television is limited by what you connect it to. This progressive scan DVD player provides much better quality than standard television and is considered enhanced definition, but by no means high definition.
Now check this out! For less than $60, you get a player that can play MP3s, CD, DVD, CD-R, SVCD, CD-RW, DVD+R, DVD-R, DVD+RW, DVD-RW, DVD+R DL, DVD-R DL, Video CD, JPEG photo playback and now combine that with Progressive scanning for an awesome 480p Enhanced Definition Picture! WOW!!!
I found this particular player could play the childrens scratched DVDs, while my other more expensive DVD player could not. I also found this player to have produced the best sound quality on the childrens television I have heard, coming from their tv set. The money I spent for this DVD player definitely is worth every penny. I am so happy with this DVD/CD player.
The remote is very easy to use. The functions for playback, resume and scrolling through chapter scenes is effortless. The only reason I don't switch out my other more expensive DVD player is because my living room TV is a 1080i flatscreen. Otherwise, I would exclusively have this DVD player on all of my televisions.
My experience with Sony products have always been good. This time it is more than good. The quality and performance--plus the cheap price for this type of DVD/CD player, makes it the most excellent Sony product I have encountered up to this date and time. It's great to find a quality product, but to have both quality and value...now that's something to be happy about!
Good DVD/CD player By A23XSB13V3ITBT on 2007-08-12
I purchased this dvd player for a small hd tv. I have had good experience with other sony electronics products and this experience was also good. It only took about 5-10 minutes to hook the dvd to my tv and set it up. It plays old dvds that I recorded 3-4 years ago from old vhs tapes as well as my rentals with no glitch.CD capability is good.No complaints. I am pleased.
as promised By A3T7PO8WKE10DN on 2007-05-13
dvd player is good and as discribed on internet...same price as walmart but no shipping charge and NO GAS...
- Good choice, great value for price
     By A390UFRRO2BLZS on 2008-01-01
NOTE: This review is a copy&paste of my review for the 2005 SKU/model/version of this player ... Sony DVPNS50P. After that it became the "55" model before this year when it became the "57" model.
DECEMBER 2005: I have only had this item for about three weeks or so. I am hoping that it "holds up" over time, unlike a lot of other DVD players on the market that apparently fail so quickly they are practically disposable in nature.
The "pros" on this item (so far) are:
* sleek, slim, uncluttered look of the unit
* comes in either black or silver, so you can match it up to your other devices.
* easy set up. There's a electrical plug, trip-RCA jacks and an S-video jack. Hook-up is a snap. Hardware-wise, the device, then, is really uncluttered.
* seems to be a good deal for the price.
The "cons" (so far) are:
* as said elsewhere by other reviewers... it IS slow. Slow to boot a disc. Slow to re-start a disc that has been stopped. Just slow.
* the display readout on the front of the box. It scrolls words like "welcome," "open" "close" and "no text." The firmware engineer was apparently out to lunch on this one. There's not even a clock display. It will display the time the DVD has played, thank goodness.
*the on-screen menu is pretty lame. Must have been the same engineer. The menu choices are only displayed as cryptic graphics, and the choices for each graphic are brief and uninformative (as in "on, off, auto" or similar types of statements). You will absolutely have to work through the manual to figure it out. And you won't find a lot of useful functionality after you do. It is a pretty bare-bones box.
* The remote control could use a good bit of improvement. The text is large enough to read ... but the buttons barely protrude from the face. You have to grasp this thing firmly, get your finger right on the button and apply a good bit of pressure to score. And a lot of the buttons can't be pushed while the thing is sitting on the coffee table ... the back of the device is beveled at the top, so if you press on the buttons near the top -- common usage buttons like TV on/off, box on/off and open/close -- while it is sitting on a level surface, the thing just flips up in the air. And the range is horrid. It can't handle getting its signal over the edge of my coffee table three feet away from the box. You've got to pick it up and aim it directly at the device if you want the box to respond. There's no facilitation for using the remote at night (no glow in the dark, backlighting, light-through, etc.) AND the remote came in silver. Who at Sony thought that I would want a silver remote if I bought a black box? Was molding cases for the remote in two different colors too big a challenge for them ... or did it just make it easier for Sony to manage its inventory?
* The box has already told me "no disc" incorrectly a couple of times. Jogging it opened and closed resolved the issue. Either the tray is not designed to align the disc 100% when inserted ... or this is an indication the device is going to have read problems down the road. Time will tell.
Still, IF it is quality, IF it is durable, then it's worth what I paid for it.
UPDATE: September, 2006. After owning one for almost a year ... and buying two more this summer ... I can still recommend this unit. Every once in a great while, it gets confused enough so that I have to unplug it from the wall to "reboot it." It has tracked flawlessly on almost every DVD ... just a freeze here and there on some heavily used Netflix rentals. I do not see any evidence of dual-layer freezing.
UPDATE December, 2007. All three units still working fine and still recommended.
NOTE: The "57" does NOT have S-video input; the "50" does. I replaced the remote with a Sony RM-VL600 'trainable' remote. $20 and well worth it. Check it out.
- Fantastic DVD player for the money
     By A2ATBOHXX8QH46 on 2007-08-24
I was having some issues with my older Panasonic player when it came to playing DVDs I had burned on my computer. I did some research and read the positives about the ability of this unit to play burned discs. These reviews were spot on!
I've now tested numerous brands of burned discs, both + and -, and have yet to run into one that skipped/pixeled, let alone not play.
This is a no frills unit but if you're simply looking for a player to watch discs on a non HD TV, or if you're looking for a machine to play burned DVD's, you cannot go wrong...especially for the price.
Highly recommended.
- More of the same
     By A1NGX6E7U3S1W5 on 2007-09-23
We purchased 2 of these units. The first was dead out of the box. The second worked perfectly - even my mother-in-law was able to use it without a problem. This seems to match the other reviews that I read.
- SUX... Get then 55 NOT the 57 (no s-video jack on the 57)
     By A2FD4ROUX4DDV4 on 2007-11-07
I have the NS55P and the NS57P models. No problems. Both units play my flawed (scratched/sticky) DVD's as advertised. The NS57P is similar, same great playback; but the 57 model does not have the S-Video jack. Pay the extra $20 for the S-Video model (NS55P)
- Best I've found for scratched DVD's and DVD+/-R
     By A3C0ZVDORI8I2S on 2008-01-16
My DVD player was several years old, and wouldn't play scratched DVD's, and frequently choked on my home-burned DVD's. After reading all the reviews about how well this model handles less-than-perfect DVD's and DVD-R/DVD+R, I bought this model.
I'm happy to report that this player doesn't miss a beat. It has successfully read ALL my scratched DVD's and home-made DVD's that my old player didn't like, without a single hiccup. I also have another decent DVD player that would choke on only 4 of my DVD/R's, and all 4 of those work perfectly in the Sony also.
If you use NetFlix, this is a great player since many of their DVD's are scratched by previous renters.
This is a great value for the money - since it plays all the DVD's that other players have problems with, it would still be a good deal if it cost twice as much. It doesn't have an S-video output, but it does have component output, which is better video quality than S-video anyway. One correction to a prior review - someone said this unit is not made in China - maybe that was true last year, but the new ones are made in China. It's hard to find ANYTHING which isn't made in China any more; as long as the manufacturer maintains quality control over it's products, it really doesn't matter in what country they place their factory.
- Good DVD player
     By A3HQJWQMRH5AEG on 2007-09-23
Great dvd player for second room. I don't need any fancy features and this units works just fine. Thanks.
- Much better than my last one
     By AGNGN6A4N5WV3 on 2007-08-31
This player is not expensive so I don't need to go into some PRO/CONs act like so many people's reveiws do. It is strait foreward, and from a reputable company. It works! That is enough in a day and age when customers pay top dollar for things that mostly don't! It is not a 5.1 system and does not support such direct hookups, it is simple to set up and dependable to use as a DVD player. It has component video abiltiy and I have not had a skip yet since purchase(unlike my other $350 phillips system!) It has many video options including saturation and quick setups for blacks and whites to look crisp. It can use a coaxal cable for a 5.1 decoder, but those are expensive and you bought this to save dough! It supports Dolby and DTS(unlike expensive Phillips who only supports dolby). Bear in mind, Lord of the Rings will not play in that fancy 6.1 DTS as this player only supports DTS 5.1(who sells a 6.1 theater speakers anyway? -retorical question- And why did Peter Jackson impliment such a wasteful frill on his DVD's?) The player emulates sound just fine on it's own and a decoder is an option but expensive, I will probably upgrade eventually though. Nice Player, inexpensive and very good quality too!
- Satisfied
     By ADP4LDW3WC7II on 2007-09-22
It loads slowly but works quite well. I've only had it for 30 days, so durablity is unknown. Since it will be attached to a plain old analog TV as long as the TV lasts, the upgrade compatability is nice but untested.
- Sony DVP-NS57P/S
     By A13HDZEY28QNMN on 2007-11-18
Can't ask for a simpler set up. The unit was up and running within a few minutes and it performs as advertised.
It is versatile in that in addition to DVDs, it can play music CDs and display JPEG photos. I am very happy with the unit.
I was especially pleased with the speed in which Amazon delivered the product especially since I opted for the basic ground service.
- NOT SONY Quality I've Come to Expect
     By A1HC6QW2J3DB08 on 2008-02-29
I just wanted a DVD player that didn't have the HD-up garbage or a VHS player/recorder on it. Not bad for $56 BUT:
Pros:
-Picture quality is fine.
-It'll play scratched DVDs (better than new ones if that makes sense).
Cons:
-My expensive TV (27 inch) does not get Stereo from it (that makes no sense since my TV says "Stereo" if getting it automatically).
-It says "No Disc" on brand new DVDs every time. Have to open and close it for it to read it 3 or more times. Can't hear that sound when a DVD is being read at the start. The DVD tray is not level I think. My PS2 plays DVDs better than this piece of junk.
-My TV is LOUD but this player takes NO advantage of it.
-Made in China (hate to say it but every DVD player, including a $300 one, was junk from China). My friend got a same model with "Made in Japan" and works far better.
-The remote must only work with SONY TVs. My expensive JVC said, "I don't work with junk." :)
I'm returning it tomorrow to the store I bought it from since it doesn't play DVDs a lot unless you eject and close the door again and again. No stereo sound even though it says "Stereo" on the box.
If it says, "Made in Japan" it is great. If "made in China," avoid since it no better than a $29.88 cheapie at WalMart.
Hate to say it, but the $279 Sony I bought 1 1/2 years ago didn't last buy 1 year on the DVD player. The VHS works fine. I think SONY's quality is going in the toilet.
- Great as a coaster!
     By A35BTPLKCXKD7Q on 2007-07-07
Our old DVD player busted one night and we ran out to the store and waivered as to whether we should buy another cheap player (~$30) or spend a little more to get this one. Well, needless to say, we got this one. Here we are a month and a half later (and only about 6 DVD plays later) and the thing stops mid movie and says "Cannot Read Disc". It says that about every disc in our library. BOttom line: If you need a piece of metal to eventually use as a coaster for your beverages, buy this, otherwise, spend your money more wisely.
- Great product
     By A27JXA7FQRLL6O on 2007-07-25
I was really impressed with this DVD player. Everything runs very smoothly, and I like how the player responds quickly to the remote, without having to point it directly to the device. Decent sound and picture quality (for my non-fancy TV). Another cool feature is that you can stop or pause a DVD, and no matter how long it was stopped, you can press "Play" and the player will pick up right where you left off. I even turned it off one time and it still recalled my spot in the movie. I'll probably keep this for a long time. Never get a no-name brand, as I learned when my Sylvania broke.
- No S-video output as listed
     By A9L2668WKJZYW on 2007-07-30
Although the detailed information says that the unit does have an S-video output, in fact, it does not. If you don't care about S-video, then it's a good product.

     By AIB1X9BE64NT7 on 2007-09-17
Sony has always provided outstanding products and this DVD player is no different. Easy to use and a very small slim device makes it a family pleaser when it is movie time.
- Does what it should
     By A2HHSCC6CX4Y8Y on 2007-12-01
The Sony DVD player is great. It performs flawlessly, simple to use and does not freeze on some DVDs as my old one did (also a sony). The price is right-can't see where you can go wrong if you want a straight forward player.
- User friendly and inyuitive
     By A1YXOMBPDJQSQU on 2007-12-18
Sony DVP-NS57P/S Progressive Scan DVD Player Silver
I purchased this for my elderly parents. It needed to be straight forward to use and easy to master. It was both! They were able to use it with a one time run through and a couple of reminders without difficulty. The remote is user friendly and intuitive. The quality was also excellent. There are many players on the market. This one fulfilled all of my expectations.
- terrible
     By A32PJIQWHOSJHJ on 2008-05-05
I bought this in early January 2008. For the first 3 months it has been fine, but over the last month it has progressed from freezing infrequently to not being able to play any disc at all. Now when I place a disc in the player disc it loads for about 10 minutes and then I get a message that the disc is dirty, even if the disc is brand new and absolutely pristine. It's going directly into the trash bin.
- Sony DVD Problem
     By AT5DSWHC6D4XO on 2007-06-17
Unfortunately, it does not work. I really wounldn
t have given it 1 star, however I had no other option.
It says it cannot read the disc. Tell me what to do?
Thanks,

This DVD player is a basic player, but is sleek, easy to use, and plays DVD's that my previous player would not. I would highly recommend this product.
- Fast delivery!
     By A2D3JVMW6AFJ0Z on 2007-10-10
Great product as expected - not much to say, just a basic dvd player - can't really go wrong with Sony. But the delivery time was much SHORTER than stated - thanks for exceeding my expectations!

Sony has put out some great products. This one is no different. This dvd player played dvds that skipped in other players in the house. It's great for playing cds on and it's sleek design is a definite plus.
- DTS Doesn't Work
     By A677PSULB3RBS on 2007-07-15
We bought this model specifically in order to play DTS audio tracks through our surround sound home theater. After hooking it up and trying every variation of audio setup options, the DTS track will not play. The other audio tracks sound great; but we will be taking this back and buying a different model with a functioning DTS playback.
