  • *BEWARE* Numerous compatibility problems

    By A3GM64N13BILUP on 2007-10-08
Nintendo's Wi-Fi USB connector is a simple device that turns your PC into a Wi-Fi hub for your Nintendo Wii and Nintendo DS to connect to the internet. The installation is quick and the unit just plugs into your computer's USB port. The connection itself seems relatively secure, and is especially nice for PC-novices. The software installation is simple and only takes a few minutes.

Unless it doesn't. Then you're just out of luck.

Nintendo does not offer a lot of support for this device, and if it doesn't work... well, they're sorry, but there's not a lot they can do. At the time of this writing, the device had the following issues:

    - It doesn't work with the ZoneAlarm firewall. At all. Period. In order for the device to work, you have to completely uninstall ZoneAlarm (not just turn it off). Other firewalls may also cause problems. There is no planned fix for this.

    - At the time of this writing, it doesn't work with Windows Vista. Nintendo may or may not be working on a fix for this.

    - The device gets HOT when plugged in. Not just a little warm, but downright uncomfortable to the fingers. I haven't heard of any of them catching on fire, but it is a bit disturbing.

So, if you DO NOT use ZoneAlarm, DO NOT use another firewall, are not disturbed by a warm object sticking out of your computer, and DO use Windows XP, this device will probably work well for you. Otherwise, find an 802.11g-compliant wireless wi-fi router for your PC and hook it up for better results.

Edit (10 Dec 2007): Nintendo has released new software for the Wi-Fi connector. The program is almost twice as big as the previous version, and is supposed to work with Vista. While I can't vouch for the Vista aspect (other reviewers, however, have said they got it to work), I can report that the new version still is not compatible with many firewalls, including ZoneAlarm. Still, the changes make this Nintendo connector a valid option for many gamers that want online play but that couldn't use the device previously - it is definitely a step in the right direction by Nintendo.

  • Wi-Fi For Two

    By A3W4D8XOGLWUN5 on 2007-03-12
These days, everyone has a video game system that has a internet connection. Although it seems to be a must right now, it is very difficult match for those who don't have the wireless connection to the high-speed internet highway, Nintendo has now made it more exciting for gamers who just thought it would be all about the Nintendo DS. The Wi-Fi USB Connector from Nintendo, which worked with the Nintendo DS, now works as a accessory for the Nintendo Wii. You can use this for the DS to play against players from the internet on handheld DS games like Mario Kart DS, Tetris DS, and many other great games. Also, it is now a great tool for Wii owners as well. You can simply use this to download great games for the Wii's virtual console like Super Mario 64, and Bonk's Revenge from the Turbographx 16 classic system. I definitely think this is a great buy more than ever for anyone who owns a Wii and for DS owners too.

  • works better than I expected

    By A1HU3HYAKRH18H on 2007-06-18
You should be very pleased with this product. In comparasion to the datel wi-fi max, well, that product may work better for the PSP, but overall the nintendo WiFi usb connector is superior. If you have a nintendo DS this is truely a good product. You intall the software, plug the thing in, and that really is about all you do. you're online after that. yeah, i was surprised too. there's no mess of configuring this or that. the software asks ONE time if you want to connect to a particular DS, you say yes, and that's all there is too it! i am not sure about the overheating issue. i don't want to contradict anybody. nintendo may have recently improved this product because i can have mine on for a few hours and it doesn't get warm. i don't plan on keeping it on for days or nothing. the signal is strong, i live in a trailor but it can still go through two walls to my furthest bedroom (with both doors closed.)i don't have a small trailor, either. i am confident if your wii is close enough it will be an excellent product to use to go online with, too. i did have one issue with this, but even that issue is gone. my firewall wasn't allowing it to connect. this lead to disabling the firewall (mcafee.) then going online. my sollution was to enable the WINDOWS firewall and leave the Mcafee one off. i am not sure but i believe every windows XP comes with a windows firewall. simply go to the control pannel and it's under the security center. there's all sorts of tabs there (actually only three i think) one lets you turn on windows firewall and the second one allows you to grant access to this product. it is very simple even if this sounds difficult. so pick one of these up, i am sure you will be pleased. just don't get it for the PSP or laptops or anything silly like that.

  • If you have a wireless network already...

    By A1YZLTVQQRJ4Z4 on 2007-07-03
I'm new to Wii, and didn't realize that wireless capability is built-in to the console. If you already have a wireless computer network set up, you probably don't need this usb adapter since it's likely that the Wii can acquire your network settings automatically. I connected my Wii to the internet features in a few minutes using the on screen menus. This usb adapter is for Wii owners that don't have a wireless network - in effect it creates its' own Wii wireless connection.

  • Excellent. Works fine with Vista

    By A2TOX3E4WZ8BSQ on 2008-01-02
After reading numerous reviews on issues with firewalls and such, I decided to go ahead and try this, knowing I could return it if it didn't work out.

First off, I researched to ensure it would work with Vista and I found the v1.06 drivers and downloaded them from the Nintendo website.

    Here is what I'm running:

D-Link DI-604 cable router with firewall
    Kaspersky Internet Suite 7.0.0.125
    Windows Vista Home Premium 32-bit

I first installed the drivers and then connected the USB Dongel when prompted. Vista noticed a new network had connected and I told it to use it locally.

Next, I fired up the Wii and configured the network and it immediately connected and started downloading updates to the Wii. Next, I tested the news and the weather and they worked. I didn't have to open up any "holes" in the router firewall or Kaspersky Internet Suite.

It was VERY easy but this might not work for everyone, considering the "horror" stories that are abound in here.

I would say the worst you can do is try it and have it not work. Just ensure you can return it if it doesn't work.

Overall, I'm happy with the performance and it appears to be working just fine. It is warm to the touch, but nothing like others have stated where it's too hot to touch. I'm also using the extended USB cable they give to ensure it has a clear path to the Wii.

    01/03/2008 Update
Well, even though it worked great for me, I decided to return it and go with a wireless router just because it is more flexible and there was one minor issue that bugged me but didn't detract from the WiFi connector from performing it's job. There was also a major issue that had me concerned, but it had nothing to do with the functionality.

The minor issue I had was that the icon in my Windows task bar would occasionally pop up a balloon message stating someone had connected to the WiFi USB connector. This apparently was due to the Wii connecting to the internet on occasion to download news, weather and system updates. It was just annoying to see that message pop up in the lower right-hand corner of my screen and it appeared to occur at least once every 10 minutes or so and I couldn't find any way to turn that off.

The major issue that has me concerned is that the Nintendo website states this WiFi connector is temporarily unsupported at this time. It gave
no explanation as to why this has happened. This had me worried since they don't say when they will support it again, if ever and why it's no longer supported.

Otherwise, this thing still worked like a charm! I downloaded some software with it and it worked flawlessly. It's still a great thing to have if you don't have a wireless network set up and don't want to have to set one up and you're not concerned about it not being supported. But, for the same price, you can get a pretty decent wireless router that will allow you to connect other devices. You'll just have to set up the security yourself, but most routers these days make it very easy to do so.

  • It works but if you have an XBOX360 as well as a wii you might reconsider.
    By A12VSIV0CCFEQE on 2007-03-22
This thing works really well. However, if you own an XBOX 360 once you install the software for the nintendo wifi device your 360 will not be able to retrieve content (listen to songs or watch movies) from your pc. To fix the problem if you already have an xbox 360 just go into your network places and set up a new home or office network. Of course after you do that your nintendo wifi won't work.

  • Works PERFECT, *BEWARE* Numerous FUN possibilities!
    By A10W2DZKO4TJ10 on 2007-10-16
No Problems, I brought this home temporarily turned off my firewall and virus software to install like the directions say to. Installed the software and connected the device with the extension USB cable, which you don't have to use but I preferred it. Then turned my Firewall and virus protection back on and everything works perfectly.

Only gets mildly warm, not hot at all, even after leaving my computer on for days. The only reason I can think the reviewer below complains his or her Wi-Fi Connector is getting hot is possibly it's right behind the computer's exhaust fan, to which he or she should just use the extension cable that comes with the device and place the Wi-Fi device away from the fan.

I use DSL to connect to the internet and found this device an EASY way to connect my Wii to the Net. Very simple to hook up, works great, it's wireless and inexpensive.

Nintendo has NO monthly fees so I don't know why all Wii owners wouldn't want their Wii online. Surf the Web, play online, and download over a hundred games to your Wii from the retro consoles: Nintendo, Super Nintendo, Nintendo 64, Sega Genesis, TurboGrafx 16, and NeoGeo plus new games added wiikly.

With games like Super Smash Bros. Brawl and Mario Kart both online games and many others, plus upcoming games Nintendo is offering downloadable games that aren't straight ports of classic titles including these announced so far:

    Pokemon Ranch Channel
    Dr. Mario & Saikin Bokumetsu
    Maruboushikaku
    Minna de Puzzloop
    Star Soldier R
Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles: Little King and the Promise Country
    Moji Pittan Wii

    Highly Recommended.

  • Great Product 100% happy
    By A2O8PGB915FNKA on 2007-04-19
my school has a secure wireless network so the wii would not connect to it, but my school computer has access so all i had to do was plug this baby in and i was online downloading content, also works for nintendo DS, a must if your having trouble getting online

  • just fine
    By A28OYNDAYLIETR on 2007-05-07
it worked just fine.it sucks that you have to shut down your antiviruse and firewall just to use it. thanks

  • Works Well Enough
    By A2P4S4GEIYXDCM on 2007-04-15
I had to buy this thing because the Wii conflicted with my wireless network. Before buying it I was aware that it may not work but decided to take the plunge anyways. The first thing I did was uninstall Zone Alarm yet turned on the Windows Firewall. Installed the software, followed the instructions, plugged the adapter in the usb port, then configured the Wii.

The Wii works fine now but are still working on Wii points to be able to get more channels. After seeing what is available with the channels it is not very interesting mainly just the News and Weather Channels, but the new Opera integration should be even more useful.

    5 stars for working!

  • Works perfect.
    By ANCIK41GBP4W4 on 2007-05-13
My wireless DSL router stopped connected to my DS after a firmware upgrade. After purchasing the USB Connector, I can connect both my DS, and my Wii. Two for one, and now I can connect to pretty much any wireless network on my laptop. Great buy, totally recommend it for any DS owner, regardless of if you have a wireless modem or not.

  • Easy to install, works great
    By A2WWTAM6EFT72 on 2007-07-16
I purchased this a few weeks ago. It was very easy to install. It works great (although it does get rather warm during use - but that's probably normal) and I haven't had any problems. It's very easy to use.

  • It works with a Pee Cee
    By A11JZ5AAFUDD8V on 2007-08-11
I am an Apple person that owns ONE Pee Cee for occasions just like this. The bottom line is that it worked and bought me the time I needed to figure out where my Hex equivalent password was that Nintendo was so insistent upon me typing into their game. With this gimmick you do not have to give out your WEP Key (password) to every kid that brings their gameboy into your house.
Which means that even if you are wireless like myself, you can entertain without breaching your security. These are the very kids with time on their hands that would really enjoy your wireless connection for those downloads they should not be downloading.

  • Great if you aren't near a wi-fi hotspot or if you don't have wireless internet
    By A3Q7M90KFZTKT5 on 2007-07-27
This is the perfect little tool for me. I don't have wireless internet and the closest wifi hotspot is 30 miles away. I can now play Diddy Kong Racing with people all over the world! This package comes with the USB adapter, an extension cord(which i don't use) and the installation CD. You have to install the CD first, then plug the adapter in, then turn on your DS or DS lite or Wii and go to wi-fi settings(not told how in the adapter booklet, look in the wi-fi booklet included with the game)then grant permission on your PC to your DS(or lite or wii). I would rate this as medium difficulty because the instructions included aren't very detailed. You must have Windows XP and internet, no exeptions. You must have a wi-fi game beforehand. I would recomend this because it is the only way to get wi-fi access if you don't have another source. And for $29.99+free shipping, you can't go too wrong. My package arrived quickly, before Amazon estimated. The adapter does get a little warm, but will cool down if you right click the wi-fi icon and select stop wi-fi connector.Overall this is a very good product dedicated to work with The ds's and Wii.

  • Don't waste your time on this!
    By A3KAPW5Q7R1JDB on 2007-11-24
I bought one, followed the instructions to the letter. Wouldn't finish the install. I tried it on all 4 jacks on the back of the computer and both on the front, still wouldn't install. I even went to Nintendo's website to download the latest version of the program and still wouldn't install. Went to the customer support section and saw where Nintendo has discontinued this item, so obviously, I'm not the only one who's had problems.

  • You get what you expect!
    By A2K1ZRWDJI9WPK on 2008-01-02
The Nintendo Wi-Fi USB Connector plugs into your internet connected home computer via USB port. When your computer is on your Wii is able to connect to the internet. Yes, the connector gets warm, not hot. There is a CD Rom included for the driver installation. It took about 3 minutes for the process to complete.

My one complaint is about the software that is installed on your computer. The software issues a yellow warning bubble from the Windows task bar every 3 or so minutes. The warning indicates that someone is connected to the Wi-Fi connection. The reminder is appreciated but I would prefer to be notifed once.

Once the installtion was complete my Wii was internet ready. Simple and worth it! I vote 5 stars, value and quality are A-.

  • This is a Great Product!
    By A2FI7BOSU4QT4C on 2008-01-13
When I bought this product it's very useful for online games and stuff on the Wii Menu. When you have the product it has intructions about how to hook it up, and it's very easy. First thing you do is install the software into your computer and connect your wi-fi connector to the computer, then put the wi-fi connector into the Wii, then type down your security numbers (for security reasons), then there you go. But also what requires for this is a wireless router that connnects to the internet. So, if you do have wireless router that has fast connection like DSL/Cable, then I recommended this product. It's very useful!

  • Really handy, but a bit flaky at times...
    By A4RLH2EAH0W3H on 2007-04-02
This is a very inexpensive way to go if you want to connect to the internet without buying a more expensive wireless router. However, it does run into a fair amount of problems at times with being unable to connect. After doing some searching online, I found that if you have a 2.4 GHz cordless phone, that will cause interference. So, it's basically back to the problem with dial-up, but with a bit faster speeds.

If you have the money, I'd recommend going with a more powerful wireless router.

  • This is not a game.
    By A2TQONIFTEQ93G on 2007-04-09
Hey Amazon! This isn't a game! It's a USB wifi adapter!

Anyway, it works well enough, piggybacking off my computer's connection for my Wii or DS. I don't like that it is always secretly running on my PC though. Also it's PC only, so if you have a Mac or something you're out of luck. But other than that, it does what you'd expect.

  • great for pokemon trading
    By A2YVAF9GADR6YA on 2007-05-19
I originally bought this so i could virtually trade my pokemon over the internet with people all around the world. It does exactly what it was intended for with only one very minor problem. It tends to heat up if i leave it plugged in too long. besides that, this item was fantastic and through amazon, it was the cheapest i have ever seen it

  • Works great! Watch out for heat...
    By A11PJAT1ARYS47 on 2007-06-26
Totally easy to set up. Plugged it into the pc, followed the instructions and within 10 minutes I was up and running. My connector is about 8ft from the wii so i have full signal also.

I guess the only "bad" thing would be that after 2 hours or so... the connector was warm-hot. It could just be my own pc though, not too sure. When not using the wii I unplug the connector so that should suffice for now.

  • It works!
    By A3HSTUU9XVU6OM on 2007-07-03
This looked like the cheapest and easiest way to get internet to my Wii. I have Windows XP (this won't work with Vista) and the slowest cable internet package and it works just as fast as my computer.

  • Easy to use and well priced
    By A18CJ94BGL1LL2 on 2007-07-09
We have been pricing these for the past month, and seeing the price here had us jump on the purchase. I am so glad we bought the actual Nintendo unit, because I am not a computer genius and couldn't figure out how to connect- not to worry... one quick call to the 800 number had a nice Nintendo rep quickly talking me through the process and had my son up and online in no time.
The only downfall to actualy being on line is that there is no real level differentials, so beginners get whipped by the advanced early on, which has made my son a little shy of online gaming.... but other than that (which he will grow out of) the product itslef is great and easy to use.

  • Buyer Beware!!
    By A1PSJUKDT5F3OE on 2007-12-31
I have to agree with some of these people. I bought the Wi-Fi to use with my Wii system. I tried downloading the software 3 times and still kept getting error commands. Plugged it into 3 different USB ports. No dice. Im going to have to trade this in. I no longer have the packaging to turn it in. Was a waste.

  • Great product--google search for zone alarm workarounds
    By A1L131DNEOO7DN on 2008-01-17
Product works as advertised. Up and running in minutes. Kids Happy! I am running ZoneAlarm 7.0+ version--used a search for zonealarm workarounds and found it...run zonealarm on highest settings...
Have in my basement...Wii upstairs connects no problems....also there's a hack out there for bufflo wifi adapters...haven't tried it yet...

  • Solution for non-wireless connection
    By A2DJO6DVWO3TTG on 2008-03-03
I do recommend the wifi connector... it's very useful and works just fine.
I just can't give it 5 stars because 1) sometimes the wii takes a little time to get connected throught it! i don't know why but for some 5 minutes both say that no one is connected!
    2) because it gets really, really hot since connected! so, you need to connect it JUST when you are going to use it... otherwise, unplug it from the pc!

  • Nintendo Wi-Fi USB Connector
    By AXNQ5ZSR06GRS on 2008-03-26
I have MS XP(SP2) on my computer. I own A Wii & A DS Lite.
I purchased this product to get my gaming systems online since I was unable to setup with my wireless net work alone.
It works very well for me so far!!!
F.Y.I. There is a software upgrade available on the Nintendo website for vista users however, I can not give any advice on that since I am not useing vista.

  • ***Does NOT work with Vista***
    By A1M3J6GBBSY2L1 on 2008-04-24
I was given one of these as a gift last year, and had a wonderful year playing Animal CrossingWW with friends around the world....until my husband gave me a new computer for our 18th wedding aniversary. Then my little world, with all my friends, disappeared, because it can't be set up to work with Vista and Norton. I have spoken with Nintendo, Gateway, and others about this, and everyone agrees that its a lost cause, and to switch to a wireless router.

This gadget is fantastic, so long as you are playing Win XP. If that is your OS, then go for it, and have fun! But it is not supported by Nintendo, despite their having an 'upgrade' available for Vista users, and they admit its of little help, and tell you go get a wireless router. They no longer make these, and told me they will not be supporting them much longer, because it poses some kind of security risk to users. *sigh*

it was too good to be true...

  • Not a review
    By A3NP47GPHIGH78 on 2007-07-08
Yes, I realize this is only for reviews but, does this thing work for your DS/WII if your wireless is extremely secure and its almost impossible to get all the right settings without changing everything?

  • Great product but...
    By A2SFJ9U3EJ1M79 on 2007-07-10
it gets one star because it is a Windows only device - what about the millions of Mac users out there nintendo?
