  • MULTI REGION CODEFREE DVD PLAYER WITH DivX. PLAYS PAL/NTSC DVDS

    By A3PZWVN4GAI052 on 2007-09-17
Make it Region free you will not regretted:

I bought two of these and was disappointed to find they were both Region 1 only...until I did this:

    1. Make sure there is no disc in the player.
    2. Turn power off and on again.
    3. Open the tray.
    4. On the remote, hit 9879 and then 0. This changes unit to Region 0, meaning it'll play all regions.
    5. Hit OK on the remote.
    6. The screen will display a massage

  • Good Deal - With Some Work

    By A1OVA37R7QJFMJ on 2007-08-10
I bought this as a multi region unit to play UK dvd's.
The machine is locked to region 1 so and after calling Phillips I was told they this ONLY applies in the US. If you buy it in Canada it is unlocked to all regions.

2 minutes with Google and a simple code entry on the remote and it is now unlocked. NOW its a great deal. No complaints at all apart from the locking silliness.

  • Great player

    By A3TRPX727O4YGB on 2007-06-24
I needed a dvd player for the back room to enjoy movies from blockbuster on.. This player works great, even if the dvds aren't up to par.. The player runs with no skips and a great picture..

  • Great DivX/Xvid Playback

    By A3O615PG7ZIPEU on 2007-07-07
I use this unit purely for watching DivX/Xvid AVI files burned onto CD-R media. Sound and video playback is flawless, and it handles subtitles very nicely as long as you follow the directions in the manual. I love the small size too.

  • garbage - don't buy

    By AKIW5TDO161J on 2007-08-08
Remote broke after 6 weeks. Player stopped working after 8 weeks. Philips will replace unit under warranty only if I pay to ship it back. A useless product and warranty.

  • DVD Player
    By A3GM7O4O27ZWP4 on 2007-09-16
This player is simple to install and works very well. Not too many features but it does the job.

  • Decent player, bad zoom, tragic remote control
    By A3VYUU1PJ3XI76 on 2007-12-28
Pros: It works, even with Netflix DVDs.

Cons: Zoom size is small. The remote control keys are multi-function; some key functions get changed depending on what you're doing.

I use zoom a lot. With other players, I'll often zoom in and then slowly advance the picture. Can't do that with the remote for this player because the keys controlling the alternate speeds (step, slow motion, fast forward or reverse) are the same keys that control where the picture is centered in zoom, so if you're using zoom you can't access those other functions anymore.

As to the zoom itself, 2X is about 15% bigger, 3X around 25%, and 4X might make it to 45% larger than the original picture size. My older unit zooms in at more than triple those values.

If you don't care about using zoom, then the player has a good clear picture and has been able to read everything that Netflix has thrown at me. If you're familiar with the typical (lack of) quality of Netflix DVDs, which usually have at least small scratches and look like they're never cleaned, you'll know this is a big plus.

  • Nice for the price!
    By A1T1YQ6O5362XE on 2007-10-25
Product arrived in a couple of days and is a nice compact unit. The trick listed in other reviews that allows the player to become region free actually works like a charm. The only drawback I've found is that the DVD drawer is a bit flimsy and you have to press the open and close button on the actual unit-the remote does not have this as an option.

  • Very very price effective
    By AVCBHH0W6RB60 on 2007-12-09
What a nice find. It is easily made multi region (see other reviews). The DVD tray can be controlled with the remote, also. To open or close the DVD tray with the remote, hold down the STOP button for 3 or 4 seconds. This player is a very good bargain when you can find it in the $30 range. Progressive scan is a great feature. It's cheap and it works.

  • Junk
    By A1NQRH10L14AA on 2007-10-03
This player is great... for about a month. After a month the component outs died. A week later I started getting black vertical and horizontal lines when I played avi dvds, a week after that I have them on all dvds. Best Buy would not exchange it or let me return it since it was over a month. Don't waste your money, the price is cheap for a reason.

  • Good basic player. A bit noisy.
    By AABH31PCKVX2E on 2007-11-17
    Pros:
    - Great price
    - Plays DVDs just fine -- gets the job done
    - Easy to setup
    - Very compact

    Cons:
A couple of very minor things...
    - Noisy when seeking new chapters on the DVD. No big deal; goes away after a couple of seconds.
    - Won't turn on automatically when you press the "Eject" button to insert a DVD. (Our previous DVD player did this automatically, so we got spoiled.)

  • Mixed...
    By A2ZIZ9FEJXU463 on 2007-07-16
Well, I've only had my dvd player for a few weeks and used it about 5 times or so, but I've already had a few problems..The menu loads slowly, one time the 'open' button refused to work, whether I pressed the remote button or pushed it on the dvd player. The last time I used it, it wouldn't even turn on..I had to unplug it/plug it back in, and then it worked, strangely...the Philips brand batteries they included w/ it died on the third day inside the remote, if that's any indication..this thing was cheap and looks nice but I don't expect it to last very long.

  • Read everything, but this is not enought
    By A2B7QM5GSQ0MFR on 2007-09-20
You can see dvd of any zone and any format, but the menus and functionalities are very basic. The remote control no has button for eject disc. Very basic remote control.

  • Simple and Easy to Use
    By A2646UM0YUSPLE on 2007-09-20
This DVD player is a snap to set up and use. Nothing fancy, but has a good picture and easy to use remote. I highly recommend, especially for your children's tv. Very compact and lightweight. Have had no problem playing any dvd's or cd's. I'm a grandma, so if I can use it anybody can.

  • excellent purchase
    By A2LATRGSXMZY8S on 2007-09-26
wow,is the word to describe this incredible bargain.this dvd player works so much better than the one i had before it.when playing scratched dvds it doesnt skip or freeze.also if you have to stop your movie,it will remember where you left off at and play it from that point on the next time you want to watch it.believe me i know how it is trying to figure out which products are good and which are not .and this is a good one.you wont be disappointed.

  • The biggest piece of junk ever - really do not buy!!
    By AF2HX24P7K1FF on 2008-03-08
This item is simply awful...now, yes, we can all buy an item and find that the particular one we have does not work and hey, it might be a fluke! BUT....get this, we have now replaced this three times as it has fallen within store return policies...and each time the remote has stopped working - completely stopped!! As the model only has a play, stop and pause key you cannot play most DVDs as they may require you to scroll to hit play, or if you can play them, you cannot fast forward etc - without a remote this is useless!!
Add to this, we had one that would play DVDs - but more than half the picture was covered with a big, black box!!!!
Finally we had one that worked for longer than the return period...but again the remote problem re-occured...Philips claim the remote is on back order so they cannot send a replacement, but eventually they will offer to replace the whole thing...if YOU pay to send it back!! Which pretty much is a waste of time !!
This is cheap, nasty and rubbish...do not buy of you want an item that will work!

  • Replacement for the dvp642 is worth it
    By A2DDP4CTBVRUKG on 2007-07-08
My 2+ year old Phillips DVP642 recently broke. I was going to order a replacement off amazon, but I had been putting it off.

After my other DVD player broke, I went out to the stores to find a 642.. but couldn't locate any. It seems the DVP3140 has replaced it in most stores.

Everything works the same on it, and it's a bit smaller. The remote is a weird rectangle shape, but I can deal with that.

For a DVD player that plays XVID/DivX movies and is as cheap as this one.. you can't go wrong.

  • Good DVD Player...Surprisingly Small
    By A2MN40Z44OO1G2 on 2007-08-05
The DVD player was even smaller than I thought it would be. I am using it in my home gym to play my workout videos. It doesn't skip. It comes with a remote, the cables, etc. You're ready to go right out of the box. I would not recommend this DVD player if it is going to be the most used one in the house. It does not have many menu buttons (just the basic), so flipping around a movie may be tedious. For my purposes, it was perfect!

  • Works fine for a month, then expect trouble!
    By A195S20DKKVMRZ on 2007-11-25
I've owned this player for a little over a month. The remote is very small and does not light up. The worst thing about this player is that it has recently developed a problem where it will only play certain dvds and only certain parts of dvds (ie. sometimes it will play the movie but not the extras). I am incredibly disappointed. I had never owned a philips product before and will hesitate before buying one again.

  • Good and inexpensive DVD player
    By AR4A1CPXBWA36 on 2007-07-19
We bought this DVD few weeks ago and we were skeptical about its quality. It is a very simple DVD player, still it plays well multi format DVD. It has vibrant colors and . very good sound. Highly recommended!

  • So far so good
    By A1YYBUXAH3VIB7 on 2007-07-20
Definitely a good buy. It's got most of the basic functions of a DVD player. Shipping was free and it came in earlier than I expected. I don't know how long this player is gonna last but I'll probably buy another identicle one to replace it.

  • Good produce
    By A18XB57XWQL977 on 2007-07-25
This dvd player is good. It has an incredible memory; it resume the place of play even when the player has been turned off for a day. My one disappointment so far is that the remote control does not have an eject button for the disc on it.

  • What an AMAZING deal!
    By A6PKIM796BFFK on 2007-08-08
This has to be one of the best deals I have ever found on the net. I went with the Free Super Savings shipping and I still received it TEN FULL DAYS before the earliest projected delivery date. I was flabbergasted to find it on my porch waiting for me today. Hooking it up to my HDTV was a breeze. I have only one downside to this player, (I have found this to be an issue with almost every divx capable player) It does not support DTS. But of course you don't exactly find many divx/xvid movies with DTS anyway. I have my XBOX 360 that handles that. This player is awesome. The videos looked great. I had a collection of 6 movies on one DVD and it played all of them flawlessly.
This is such a great deal I am letting my friends and family know about it so they can all buy one. DO NOT MISS THIS DEAL. BUY ONE AS SOON AS YOU HAVE THE MONEY!!!

  • Small, capable, cheap
    By A1LNURZZMB8229 on 2007-10-22
Need a DVD player that plays DivX and Xvid avi/mpgs? Want it to read regular DVDs, too? This is your machine. Cheap, fast, quiet. A tad slow on startup, but I'm not going to complain.

  • Philips DVP3140 Compact DVD Player
    By A3U0QKWHW6G9AD on 2007-10-02
the Philips dvd player was a fairly good buy and works fine except that you cannot use the remote to open the player to put in your disk. You have to do it manualy.

  • goodpiece
    By A31MFCTEEDZ6OV on 2007-10-09
a very consumate piece of equipment that produces good quality projection and clear picture. this is amazing since the unit is lightweight and reasonably thin. a situation generally found in more expensive products. Philips has made the DVD player more affordable without losing the technical advances of many 2000's series.

  • Really a good Product
    By AOT4A1OUNRBAP on 2007-10-19
Its now almost couple of mths since I purchased it and its working gr8 for me. Operation is quite easy and fast...Really worthhaving it

  • Good DVD player for the money
    By A13616S63RBY6G on 2007-11-28
    3 stars for 3 Pros:
    1. Great audio and video quality
    2. Plays everything and can be region free easily
    3. Cheap

2 stars missing for 2 Cons:
    1. Problem with scratched discs which can be read by my other players
    2. Bad compatibility with cheap CDRs, e.g. Optimum brand

  • Does not play many rental DVD's that other cheap DVD players have no problems with
    By A23E47NLLCBHGO on 2008-01-02
I have two other cheap DVD players, but this one is garbage. It will often skip whole sections of movies on some DVDs, or it will stutter and the sound will be out of sync.

This player only works well on the more expensive DVDs. The cheaper DVDs do not play well at all. Which is completely backwards for a cheap DVD player. These must be the ones that didn't pass quality control in China or something, as the cheap DVD players over there usually work better on the cheap DVDs than the more expensive DVD players.

If you rent DVDs then don't buy this player. Most rental places use the cheaper DVDs. My other two cheap DVD players play many discs fine, but this one will either skip alot or just display "no disc"

I took it apart and cleaned the reader today. This helped a little bit, but it still skips and stutters a lot.

  • Excellent
    By A18B9LURKYMHHD on 2007-07-25
Bought for Grandfather as gift... he loves it. says it works well, and very easy to use. Can't beat it for $34 shipped.
