March of the Penguins [Blu-ray]x$10.86
    (19 reviews)
Best Price: $28.99 $10.86
In the Antarctic, every March since the beginning of time, the quest begins to find the perfect mate and start a family. This courtship will begin with a long journey - a journey that will take them hundreds of miles across the continent by foot, in freezing cold temperatures, in brittle, icy winds and through deep, treacherous waters. They will risk starvation and attack by dangerous predators, under the harshest conditions on earth, all to find true love.
March of the Penguins instantly qualifies as a wildlife classic, taking its place among other extraordinary films like Microcosmos and Winged Migration. French filmmaker Luc Jacquet and his devoted crew endured a full year of extreme conditions in Antarctica to capture the life cycle of Emperor penguins on film, and their diligence is evident in every striking frame of this 80-minute documentary. Narrated in soothing tones by Morgan Freeman, the film focuses on a colony of hundreds of Emperors as they return, in a single-file march of 70 miles or more, to their frozen breeding ground, far inland from the oceans where they thrive. At times dramatic, suspenseful, mischievous and just plain funny, the film conveys the intensity of the penguins' breeding cycle, and their treacherous task of protecting eggs and hatchlings in temperatures as low as 128 degrees below zero. There is some brief mating-ritual violence and sad moments of loss, but March of the Penguins remains family-friendly throughout, and kids especially will enjoy the Antarctic blue-ice vistas and the playful, waddling appeal of the penguins, who can be slapstick clumsy or magnificently graceful, depending on the circumstances. A marvel of wildlife cinematography, this unique film offers a front-row seat to these amazing creatures, balancing just enough scientific information with the entertaining visuals. --Jeff Shannon

5 Stars film, 3 Stars Picture/Sound Quality By A3NQSMTG612AF on 2007-04-03
First things first; this is a great film! If you want to view my comments on it, check my DVD review from a couple years ago. I'm here to discuss the HD DVD. Frankly, if you already own the DVD, don't waste your money on the HD version. There is virtually no improvement in picture quality, at least from what I could decipher, over the DVD. Why? Because the film itself was shot with crappy, grainy, low resolution film to give it that "documentary" look. Seriously...you'll be as surprised as I was when you watch it to see that it looks virtually identical to the DVD version. I was really looking forward to high-def penguins; for great visuals of penguins, "Happy Feet" on HD DVD is the one to buy (correction: rent; it's an abominable film). For a great film, if you don't already own "March of the Penguins" on DVD, buy the HD DVD version. Just don't expect to be blown away. I haven't seen the Blu-Ray, but I would imagine that the PQ is exactly the same.
not upto the mark ! By A2QTV1193KBK09 on 2007-12-21
I purchased this Blu ray disc for over a couple of weeks, I really dint get a chance to check out this feature.
Before that let me tell you , I watched this movie in the theater, and it was absoultely phenomenal. I was in tears by the end.
Now I was expecting the same crystal clear picture and perfect audio, when i got this bluray disc. I was dissapointed
I have a 50" 1080P LCD tv. and a PS3 as a bluray disc player. And I loaded up this disc, at the beginning the pictures were vibrant, and the sound was ok , (I have surround speaker system).
But at the middle during the Mother penguins march to the sea in search of food, and at the Storm sequence , the picture got HORRIBLE AND it felt as if i was watching this thing on analog tv broadcast with bad reception.
Now I know that this documentary was shot with different cameras at various points (calm beginnings, underwater, storms and blizzards), hence the bad picture. But bluray should have corrected these problems, when they mastered this disc.
I am totally dissapointed, Excellent movie , but made to feel horrible by BLURAY.
Not a blu-ray material By A20VORHPDBFG72 on 2008-03-03
No offence to the Oscar winning documentary. I love the story but it was not shot in HD and they didn't even try to covert it. The picture quality is about the same as the regular DVD upconvert at its best. Huge disappointment!
beautyful pictures and a loveley story By A1A11RCOBCVZ4H on 2007-05-14
It was wonderful to see this film again in this high quality in my own home theater. Its fascinating to see this penguins on a big screen. This film is definitely one of the HD DVDs that have to be in every good collection.
The look is partially a little grainy, because the film is shot in 16mm.
But i like this analog film look. Its a pity, that the original version is not alternative on the disc with subtitles. The voiceover of morgan freeman is good, no doubt. But in the original version (in the german synchronisation to) the penguins tells the story by themselfs like actors. This has definitive more flair. So good 4 stars.
SIMPLY UNBELIEVABLE! By A32GJV5CT60CP9 on 2007-09-02
For people who enjoys documentary of the natural world, this is a MUST in your collection. I thought of them as cute creatures only, but after i watched March of the Penguins, I am humbled, in awe, full of admiration and repect by their bravery to live & survive in the most unhospitable part of the planet.
- Fascinating... a thrill to watch on Blu-Ray
     By A35QRTOA6YLJXF on 2007-05-17
This is the type of documentary that I hoped Planet Earth would be... I think you'll enjoy this documentary immensely. There are also some special features on the Blu-Ray version including trailers, the making of, and a warner bros cartoon clip.
Enjoy!
- Terrible Picture
     By A24OETM60A1AUM on 2008-02-13
I agree with a couple other reviews that this movie is not worth buying on Bluray. The movie itself was very interesting, but it is definitely not in High Definition. The company that put this out (I believe Warner Brothers) should be ashamed of themselves. I was watching on a 50" plasma that every other bluray I have has looked unbelievable on, but not this one. Would not recommend buying this, unless buying regular version. I wish I new how to get my money back on it.
- not filmed in HD?
     By ABLBTZ7B1BHW4 on 2008-01-09
Although the content of the movie was great, it was not worth buying in blu-ray as the picture was no better than DVD. Comparing to the Planet Earth episode with the penguins, the difference in picture is very obvious!
- March of thr Penguins HD DVD

One of my favorite movies. I love to watch it over and over again. I would recommend this to all family memebers from child to adult.
- Excellent movie, terrific graphics on HD
     By A29M09QBG9TZLP on 2008-05-14
This is one awesome movie. It follows the March of the Penguins to the breeding grounds. It was amazing what the penguins go through. I laughed and cried and cried some more. Great for any child or adult too. The graphics on HD were great too.
- Penguins, Ho!
     By A1FB8VLIAGQ8DP on 2007-12-27
Very good documentary. Those pengy's are so cute! Morgan Freeman was the perfect choice for the narration voice-over. Overall very good. A tad slow but hey it's a documentary. About penguins. It looks very cold there! So, in all honesty though, save the money and buy the regular DVD copy. I can't imagine the upscaled DVD would look much different than this. There is a general softness to most of the visuals, and grain-a-plenty, so don't expect to be dazzled. That said, the camera work is pretty amazing and they get some incredible shots! Enjoy.
- They will do the"March" again on Blu Ray Disc!!!
     By A22VNXHU6IZ5MT on 2008-01-10
This is one great documentary(about Emperor Penguins,as told by Oscar winner Morgan Freeman),it was a surprise hit in theatres and was a hit on DVD!!! It got the Oscar for Best Documentary in 2005 and it deserved it!!! It is now on Blu Ray Disc and it's awseome, and it has the same extras that the DVD release had, just in superior Blu Ray format!!! Blu Ray discs are simply awesome!!! I'm just "Blu" with envy!!! A great film for the whole family, definately worthy of repeat viewings!!! two thumbs up!!! five stars!!! A+

This is a fantastic film, which really shows the life of a penguin. It is quite sad in places, but I think it would be sutable for young children.
