Easy interface, no hassle connection, but weak transmitter By ASKQS1I8AJI9O on 2007-03-16
The hook up is as simple as it gets, just plug & play. The mount is the second-generation style that doesn't droop (at least for me). The transmitter leaves a lot to be desired. I bought this primarily to load up the extra 10+gb on my 910 with music and listen through the car stereo. Unfortunately, the transmitter is rather weak, and I have difficulty getting clear reception in any of my vehicles without some static. However, the tuner frequency is completely adjustable, so although I have tried about a dozen different settings there may be a "magic" one out there which will ultimately give me clear reception. I have 3 other modulators, and the TomTom device doesn't match their performance. It is also necessary to use a pretty high volume on the radio to hear the transmission when listening to music, and it doesn't sound as good as a CD or even standard FM broadcsts, but is about as good as you can expect from an FM modulator. Using the power cord helps transmission a lot, and is recommended by the manufacturer. Overall, excellent integrated design and a good product, but performance issues preclude an excellent rating.
EDIT - DON'T BUY: This thing has turned out to be a piece of plastic trash - mount is broken and the transmitter doesn't work any more. Only used it about 4 times. TomTom customer service is like banging my head against the wall - it felt a lot better after I finally gave up. Don't buy this item. Too bad I can't edit/revise my rating, I'd give it one star.
Finding empty FM stations By ATJQHTHAU8MBB on 2007-07-12
I don't have this exact transmitter, but I've tried others and find them to generally work pretty well as long as you find an adequately quiet empty station. Try this website to find the best empty stations in your area. http://www.radio-locator.com/cgi-bin/vacant
Does not work as advertised and will be a waste of your money! By A3AGIBSUJ7L3UU on 2007-08-29
I paired this up with a TomTom 510 and an iPod cable kit. As soon as an iPod is connected, the FM transmission stops working and all audio is transmitted to the internal TomTom speakers. After wasting 2 months with TomTom customer support, I received the following response:
"Yes, we did receive your items. I've tested your scenario with your device and with our in-house devices. It appears to simply be a limitation of the TomTom product. Unfortunately, I do not have a fix for you.
I've notified product management of the issue, however, there probably won't be a fix for the 510/910 models, as they are no longer being manufactured. Any fix would most likely be implemented with future products only."
After mentioning that it explicitly states this is supposed to work with the TomTom 510, I received the following response:
"That is, perhaps, a misnomer. I will forward this information on to our Product Management team for research. However, it simply doesn't function the way it was stated on the website."
They also claimed to have tried it with in-house devices and it did not work for them either. If you somehow get this to work (as there seems to be many out there), feel lucky. If you don't, don't expect anything from the TomTom customer support, because apparently this "doesn't function the was it was stated on the website." Since Amazon has a 30 day return policy, I'm not very optimistic that I will get my full refund.
DO NOT WASTE YOUR MONEY ON THIS ITEM!!!
FM Transmitter works great! By A2DMRAO6IZUHHB on 2007-05-14
Works just as advertised and only took a minute to set up. The longest part was trying to find a frequency on the radio that wasn't being used. Once you find a frequency you just type that into the TomTom and away you go. If you don't want to transmit (say you want to listen to Click and Clack) you can turn it on and off with a click to the TomTom screen. I either plug in my ipod or lately been downloading songs directly to the TomTom. Either way, sound is excellent and volume goes automatically when a course direction is being read. Also works great with my cell phone.
effective but not a very powerful FM transmitter By A3EUCSDANACPLC on 2007-07-22
I used this product for a road trip from Boston to Dallas. It was very simple to set up. However I realized that the FM transmitter was not very powerful and that if you hit a pot hole hard enough the transmitter would shut off. Another thing related to the FM transmitter weakness was the fact that you had to turn the radio volume up fairly high to hear your ipod or the tom tom navigational voice directions playing through the FM transmitter. One thing i wish the system would allow is for you to charge your ipod through the fm transmitter. Espcially since the fm transmitter will connect to your ipod using the same port on your ipod to charge it. But it only connects it to both transmit the audio and control your ipod but it won't charge it.
- Not that useful
     By AJN1O4Q7VL6PZ on 2007-07-26
but it's not the fault of this product; it's the fault of the TomTom device. It's not very user friendly when it comes to managing music. You have to use MP3, which I don't normally do, and creating playlists is nearly impossible. I went through coverting loads of music, but the lack of playlists made the whole exercise pointless. Hopefully, TomTom will update the software, allowing for WMA to allow for better syncing with Windows Media Player. I don't use this device at all.
- Defective Item
     By A175XDO8JOFY3X on 2007-08-11
I have returned two of these now. Both defective. This mount will not hold the weight of the GPS unit. It droops down if you mount this on your windshield until it hits your dashboard. I would not purchase this item until the design is changed.
- TomTom FM TRANSMITTER ROCKS!
     By A22HFSV09SUDMU on 2007-09-12
Mine drooped also ... until I realized I could turn the dial one more notch (turn hard)...it took care of the drooping as it locks the pivot...first notch merely locks suction...
More importantly: I love the 910...with the FM transmitter...I use it for Audiobooks through Audible.com and as others have noted regarding music, the book plays on FM, and pauses for directions and phonecalls (I use the Bluetooth with a Palm device as well) through the speaker phone.
I'm on my third 910 - the first one was stolen after 3 days (make sure you get the Serial number off your device when you get it...believe it or not, none of the documentation has the serial #!), the second one was fried when I was sold the wrong car charger (it's 5 volt output, not 12V -- buy TomTom's!) and now the third...But that should tell you I think this is an A+++ product.
- Disappointing so far
     By A3PKNE2D6EUG97 on 2007-03-28
I bought it to prevent having to put another cable (audio => car stereo) across the dashboard. I agree fully with the first reviewer that the quality is poor. As he, I haven't been able to find a frequency that was free of static and in the rare cases that I did, this didn't last long, presumably because a radio signal on that same frequency came within range as I drove along.
I'm pretty critical when it comes to sound quality and this just doesn't cut it. As mentioned, it's not even FM quality, which is pretty much free of static these days.
A disappointment so far.
- TOM TOM FM transmitting mount
     By ADIMIU34AQSMF on 2007-06-26
Works as advertised, but the fidelity is not great. If you want CD or even solid FM broadcast fidelity better stick with the real thing. Unless you are playing music from your HD on the TomTom or iPod, you won't be able to hear music thru your radio while recieving the TomTom
- Radio Waves?
     By A2L20NAME1ZDPU on 2007-07-29
FM transmitter does not work it has poor reception (if any)but as a spare mount it is ok and was cheaper than non FM mount, this would be the only reason to buy it!
- The only good part of the Tom Tom
     By A6SN8GDKXM3DD on 2007-08-12
I ordered it from Amazon and it was sent on time. I did use it for a couple of days and it works well. It stayed on the windshield and the sound was good.
The tom tom I bought it for had problems and I returned it. So, I didn't need the fm mount either and returned it to Amazon. I recieved a refund but because it wasn't Amazon's fault, they charged me for the shipping cost both ways.
I would never again buy anything off the internet if there is any chance that I may have to return it. Once they have your money, your at their mercy.
- unstable tomtom windshield mounting
     By A365HBKTZJFUQW on 2007-08-22
I would like to know from someone out there how to keep the device from drooping after it's installed on the windshield?
- TomTom 910 Mount
     By A3PYBQ4AEZ03YR on 2007-08-23
Why it doesn't get 5 stars? Because the last one broke, and I expect more of the same from this one. It also 'droops' just like the original. The TomTom has to rest on the dash to remain viewable by the driver, at least in my car. TomTom 910 is a great navigation system spoiled by a lousy mounting system. TomTom service support isn't much help either.
But, back to the mount. The FM feature is pretty cool and works well, at least while you're in the same local area. Moving too far outside may result in your previously unused FM selection becoming used, forcing you to switch. In conjunction with the 910's hard drive, you have plenty of room to store and play MP3s through your radio (my choice is Bob & Tom). The 910 pauses your play while voicing directions, and then picks up where it left off.
I haven't used the Blue Tooth features yet.
So, if you need a new mount (and you will, trust me) then this is pretty good. I just wish the mount was as good as the system.
Did I mention their support sucks?
- A TOTAL waste of money
     By A1FFIV29Z8RBFK on 2008-01-14
We traveled in a friends car that has on-board GPS. When a phone call came in the GPS over-powered the radio and he just started talking. This mount requires you be on a certain channel in order to hear it over your radio speakers, so you can forget being able to be listening to your favorite radio channel and simply receiving a call over your GPS. A TOTAL WASTE OF MONEY...DO NOT BUY
- Useless
     By A2M3HDLKL29GY on 2008-03-05
No value here. FM transmission is spotty, even in cars with great antennas (Honda/Acura/Toyota). Stay away.
- TomTom Windshield Mount
     By A1O08Z06SXELQB on 2008-03-31
I purchased this mount to replace the original mount that failed after two uses. Based on the total lack of support from TomTom, I urge you not to purchase any TomTom products.
- Worked well, but could be better
     By AIL9UF0DUEKQI on 2008-04-07
I know that maybe I wanted it to be more than it is, but I found this to have a little more 'noise' when running the transmitter over the radio. I am not expecting audiophile level output, but I could not seem to adjust the transmitter and radio to not have at least a little bit of a hum. However, I am basically satisfied with it. I am using it with a TomTom 910.
- No Hands Free Calling
     By ATI13IZNK6ZF4 on 2008-04-29
If you are planning to use this for hands free calls via a Bluetooth phone connection, don't bother. Despite what the sales pitch or the manual says, you cannot here phone conversations through this mount. You can here the the phone ring on an incoming call, but once you answer the call, the audio switches to the internal speaker on my 910.
I called TomTom tech support and was told that the statement about using this mount for Hands Free Calls in the features portion and in the manual was I quote "Probably a misprint and they would look into it".
- Works great, but cost too much
     By A399GPFKUZJC0F on 2008-05-02
I had lost my mount on a business trip and had to buy another one. I did not need the FM transmitter, but this was the only way to buy a replacement. I called TomTom and they could not help. I am not happy with TomTom due to this. It is ridiculous that they do not have replacement parts.
