  • Flippin' Awesome!

    By A29BQ6B90Y1R5F on 2007-04-11
Super Paper Mario, like the Legend of Zelda Twilight Princess, was originally a Gamecube game that was moved on over to the Wii. Still, it's definitely a game we've been waiting for and definitely a game worth getting a hold of. Simply put, this is one of the games Wii owners ought to want.

The storyline in Super Paper Mario isn't really anything special, but it's certainly one to honor for its fine script and clever writing. An evil magician named Count Bleck plans on taking over the world, and as Mario you'll need to stop him by finding the pieces of the purity heart that'll allow you to do so. In truth, the storyline is actually really crazy, but I'd rather not give too much away. It's actually a really enjoyable story Mario fans will love in the long run.

The game is very dialogue heavy but at least its creative. Much of it is very humorous and will have you laughing quite a bit. But when I say dialog heavy, I'm not kidding. You'll be mashing on the 2 button a lot. It wouldn't be so bad if characters didn't go on to explain such things that were useless.

Super Paper Mario is truly something remarkable in terms of its gameplay. It mixes Platforming and RPG elements. There's still a need to level up and Mario has his set of HP but all the way, this is a platformer. It plays very similar to Super Mario Brothers on the NES. However, a slight problem with this kind of gameplay, is that those who were really addicted to side scrolling Mario games and were used to holding down a button to run will be surprised to learn there is no button to run! It's no big deal, but if you're feeling nostalgic (as you probably will playing this game) it's actually something long time Mario fans may have to get used to, especially because Mario doesn't move very fast.

During the game you can press the A button and flip the screen from the 2D world to the 3D world any time you want. Most of the time you'll be playing the game in the 2D realm, but there's plenty to be done in 3D too. It's a necessity to getting past some of the games puzzles. If you're ever stuck on puzzle just try flipping. It's also used to get past environmental objects. If a pipe is too tall for Mario to jump over, for example, then you can switch the game to the 3D view and simply walk around it. You can't stay in 3D forever. If you stay in 3D for too long Mario will take damage.

The problem with the gameplay is that the game is far too easy. Most enemies are easily dispatched and don't do much damage to you anyway. Even boss battles are of little challenge. The boss fights are fun, at least, requiring you to fight them in interesting ways, but they're still on the easy side. If you're an expert gamer, I don't predict you'll die anytime soon throughout your adventure.

Mario also isn't alone. He'll be joined by Peach, Luigi and Bowser throughout his travels, and each of them has an ability they can do. Peach can float, Luigi has a high jump and Bowser can spit fire. You can switch between them at any time, and there are moments when you'll actually need a certain character to do things. However, the game relies heavily on the mechanic of going from 2D to 3D and only Mario can actually do this. Despite that you've got other characters, you'll still play through most of the game as Mario.

Throughout your adventures you'll also collect Pixls. Little fairy like creatures that give Mario and company other abilities he can use. For example, early on in the game he meets a pixl that allows him to grab enemies and other objects and throw them. There are plenty of other powers. Needless to say, Super Paper Mario is filled with secrets.

The wii remote works well with this game. As noted you'll hold it like an NES controller and play the game in basically the same style you played the original Super Mario Brothers. The Wii controls, however, feel a little tacked on. You can point the remote to search for hidden doors or scan enemies. You can also shake when you jump off an enemy to get more points. The wii remote doesn't have a big impact on the gameplay, though.

Visually, of course, the game looks like a late generation Gamecube game. However, the games unique style alone warrants its beauty. The 2D landscape is far better looking than the 3D landscape, though. The 2D backgrounds are beautiful, and the background environments really shower a lot of detail. 3D doesn't look as good, though because it's just not as pretty and filled with life. Most of the level designs themselves are also pretty plain. As far as platforming goes, there's nothing too intuitively designed either. The levels also aren't filled to the brim with enemies. There's a lot of jumping, but not a lot of obstacles in your way.

The game also sounds really good. There's no voice acting to speak of, really. Which sucks for a game as text heavy as this, but most gamers who've been gaming for well over a decade probably won't care about this, anyway.

On the whole, Super Paper Mario is a must own title for the Wii. It's been ingeniously designed; it's full of humor and has been cleverly written. And to top it all off, it's just a lot of fun to play.

    Pros:
    +Well crafted dialogue
    +VERY humorous game
    +Strikingly original gameplay elements
+Simple easy gameplay to get a hold of
    +Good music
+Plenty of things to do in the game
    +Cleverly designed puzzles

    Cons:
-The game is far too easy for experienced gamers
    -Tacked on Wii Remote controls
-Very dialogue heavy; it's GOOD dialogue, but there are moments when you really just want to play the game

  • Solid Fun

    By A2LPJD19MGBNXJ on 2007-04-13
It's a shame that so few people have Wii's in North America. Otherwise, I would imagine that "Super Paper Mario" would have tons of reviews at this moment. This is an incredibly solid game.

Less "Paper Mario" than "Super Mario", the game returns Mario to his 2-D roots. Gone are turn-based battles, and in their place, good 'ole hoppin' and boppin' fun, like in the old days, but with one clever twist. When your character is faced with, say, an impossible jump, you can simply "flip" yourself into three dimensions, the result of which is often the opening of a new path, or the emergence of a hidden pipe, etc. It's a clever twist on the 2-D goodness of the old "SMB" games of the Nintendo and Super Nintendo.

If I had one complaint with the game, it's that it's a bit too easy. With the ability to level ones character, the challenging aspects of the original "SMB" games gets a bit lost (in particular, the character will NOT die from falling in a hole, and can sustain multiple hits before running out of heart points, which can be replenished by items, or even hidden mushrooms). But make no mistake - while the game is never particularly challenging, it is always fun. The dialogue is snappy (the "dating sim" send-up is incredibly humorous, e.g.), the controls are good and responsove (I would have liked to see the nunchuk controller used a bit, particularly for the 3-D sections, but this is a mild complaint), the graphics are pretty...interesting, and the whole experience is trippy, in a "Katamari" sort of way.

All in all, a solid Wii outing - this is one of those games that makes you happy to own the system.

  • Great Whole-Family Game; Perhaps a Bit Short

    By A3V6Z4RCDGRC44 on 2007-04-29
Super Paper Mario for the Wii brings a fantastic new dimension to the 2D fun of paper mario. You can now switch - on the fly - between a 2D and 3D view of your world.

This brings a whole new twist to the idea of puzzle solving. You run along your 2D path and think you've hit the end. But when you take a look at the 3D view, you might find a tunnel hidden behind a rock, or a whole new path pointing out at a 90 degree angle.

There's a fun storyline, full of cute dialogue, but really in games like this you aren't worrying about deep plots or soap opera style intricacies. You play to jump on mushrooms, hit blocks, and search for those secret locations.

The game is clearly pointed towards a young audience, but it's a credit to its design that even adults have a lot of fun hopping along towards the goals. For some reason you can't run here - which can be frustrating sometimes - but in general you get the same mario fun from previous games. You learn new skills as you go, can throw items, change characters, locate new helpers, and level up.

The game is nicely broken up into short segments, again perfect for its target audience. If a kid has only 1/2 hr of "video game" time available in a given day, they can still make progress and feel like they've achieved something. The puzzles are never so tricky that they drive you completely insane. A careful perusal of the spot you're in will usually provide the answer.

An adult might complain that because of this, if you actually have control of the TV and a full weekend of gaming laid out, you could easily beat the entire game before the weekend was up. While this is true, you can always go back through after that and challenge yourself to find even more points on each level.

And for those with youngsters around, it really is great fun to play together. The game is very 'friendly' - if you step in sludge or fall off a cliff, which most games would kill you for, here it usually is just a minor setback.

In a world of zombie games, kill-everyone games and horror games, it's nice to find something that you can play with all ages and have fun with. It doesn't require a ton of dexterity or a complex understanding of role playing setup. You just run, jump, and puzzle-solve.

    Highly recommended!

  • Too much BLAH BLAH BLAH

    By A1SX6H0ISNTCA0 on 2007-10-07
I bought the wii and paper mario because I was craving a little old school 2D mario action. I think this game is pretty satisfying once you get going and I enjoy it, but I dread all the stupid blathering. The dialog might be ok if it were sort but it isn't even that. It just goes on and on and on and on and on and on and on with inane stupid conversations that consist of nothing better than "I'm better than you!" "Nuh uh!" "Yeah huh!" "Nuh uh!" And if, for example you don't beat the villain at the end of the level you have to scroll through the entire stupid conversation AGAIN! Horrible, just horrible.

I was babysitting a tween recently and they didn't even stick with the game for more than 5 minutes because they said there was too much reading and not enough playing.

Ugh. I want to play not read!

  • HUGE LET DOWN, THEY CHANGED THE FORMAT AND IT RUINED THE GAME

    By A5KXZ0HFK2VKE on 2007-09-08
UPDATE 1 YEAR LATER. After my intial distaste of this video game that all but caused it to sit there and collect dust, I revisited this game in June of 2008 without all the built up excitment I had coming in after playing the previous Paper Mario Games, and felt this game itself is very solid.

Had they called this game something like Super Mario Wii Story, or something along those lines, I probably would have gotten this game and liked it off the bat....unfortunately they called it a "paper" mario game, which was horribly misleading and very much disappointing to this fan of that series--this game was a key reason why I made the plunge for the Wii in the first place--I love the Wii anyway, but was extremely disappointed with this game when the entire gameplay style that was so endearing in previous titles was gone. The story part was still there, but the style had changed and it took a level or two really to get going and become very good.

Now having started and completed this game, I'd probably give it a 3.5-4 star review. Had it not been billed as a Paper Mario game, it might have hit a 4 star review easily, but I still discount it somewhat for that (I likely would have enjoyed it more initially if I wasn't coming in with preconceived notions).

Overall, the game more than held my interest once I got past the first few levels.....and I would really still consider buying another title in this edition, but I was extremely disappointed, and gave it a review as such a long long time ago. The game was interesting enough too after it got going to be very entertaining, but much easier at least to me than it's Gamecube counterpart (which was much tougher than the initial N64 game).....

I don't beat many video games at all, and I beat this one.....I would recommend it and probably rank it higher if I was new to this series....I think a 4 star review is about right.

Here's my intially shocked review, written probably 2-3 months after I bought this game, probably a year ago from today (Sept08).

The Paper Mario series was one of the best series featuring 2 of the best games for Nintendo's previous systems.....Paper Mario for the N64 was a brilliant RPG game with enough colorful design for the kids, but yet enough of a decent story and interesting almost Zelda like moments for the adults. It was a turn based game, where the player would have to use strategy, etc to figure out ways to progress through the game. I enjoyed the first Paper Mario maybe more than any game I have in a long time, and therefore eagerly picked up the Paper Mario 1000 Yr Door for the Gamecube a few years later....

THe GameCube game was a bit less effective that the original, mostly because they added a bit TOO MUCH text to the story, but it still was a long (30+ hour game) and had enough to more than keep you interested, just didn't have the ghost levels, or charm of the first one because some of it had been done, but it was not far off, still one of GameCube's better titles and one of the few long games that I (an adult) took the time to beat. There's enough humour etc and enough strategy to make this one interesting, and I was eager for more (I had the game for a few years actualy before I got around to playing it because as an adult time is tough and devoting 30+ hours to a game can be hard, but when I had the time, I was more than happy with using it to play this game. It was more challenging than the first one, but also maybe a big too long. Still hardly a bad game, I'd still rank it a perfect 10/10 overall....and I was more than eager to buy the Super Paper Mario game which at the time I thought was going to be for the GameCube....

6 months pass and the Super Paper Mario game comes out for only the Wii.....I had already a desire to buy the Wii, but thought I can't wait to buy it now because I know there's at least a Paper Mario Game if not a Zelda game I'd be interested in.....so I finally buckled down and bought something I thought would be a can't miss title....Super Paper Mario. I like the fact that the first two games read like a story, and really the most compelling piece of hte first two games is the RPG style with the thousands of mini stories and battles, they were very well detailed....

SO I bought the Wii, with really Super Paper Mario being the clincher for me, and got the game, put it in, with reasonable excitement. I even told my wife (I'm a newleywed) about it and she remembered briefly me playing the last one....and I said I was really excited about this, especially after I already tested and enjoyed Wii Sports so much.....so we both put it in, and right off the bat, the graphics were a bit disappointing (they're worse than the GameCube and maybe even N64 version) and suddenly the game is now more like a standard old-school, dated Mario Game than the interesting RPG styled game series I fell in love with.

I felt very jipped. I still am upset. I've tried to play the game several times, but find it boring, and less inspired/entertaining than the two games preceeding it. It's one of the worst video games I've bought ever, and is much more in tune for a 10 year old, rather than an adult (whereas the previous titles work well for adults, and I'd really recommend their strange charms). This title is a complete waste.

I almost feel like Nintendo should give everyone who bought this game thinking it was going to be similar in style at least to it's two predecessors should be able to get their money back. It's billed as a Paper Mario Title, but is much more like a very weak Super Mario 3 styled game. THis type of game would have been ok had it been called Super Mario 4 (I think World was 4) or Super Mario Wii, or really had it come out 15 years ago when I was a kid....but billing this as Super Paper Mario, then delivering a game that in gameplay is nothing like the original is a complete waste.

If you're a 10 yr old kid or an adult buying a game for a 10 yr old kid, by all means buy this game....if you are familiar at all with the Paper Mario Game Series, avoid this like the black plague. It's simply not worth your money, and had it not been for games like Wii Sports and Trauma Center, this game might have soured me completely on the Wii itself.....

It's just a horrible shame, and I'm still upset about it a month after I've bought it. I want my money back!

  • Snooze-fest
    By A1V71N6X7Z8XV1 on 2007-05-27
Here we are with yet another Wii game (the other being Zelda) that I will not finish out of boredom. Another HUGELY anticipated, fairly well-reviewed game I'm aware, but just like the majority of the Nintendo fanboys, the critical reviewers typically suffer from the same problem: believing Nintendo can do no wrong. There is a reason Nintendo has to keep making the same games. They have to stick to the same tired formula for everything they produce because when they stray from it the maniacal fans raise hell. When Mario had a 'jet pack' in Super Mario Sunshine they screamed and cried that it didn't 'stick to tradition' and hence sales suffered. When the Wind Waker used a cell-shading and what I thought was beautiful animation style the child-boy fans cried their little eyes out and kicked their feet and again sales suffered. So Nintendo is stuck either sticking to 'tradition' and making the same game every time because they know it will sell and their developmentally disabled fans will like it (because change is bad, familiarity is good) or they can try to 'break the mold' and get an onslaught of attack from their fans and risk having a profit-loss product on shelves.
That being said here's where this game went wrong for me. In reality HAD this game ACTUALLY stuck to a 'tradition' and been just a 2d side-scroller it would have been great. The majority of the levels are fun. However the problem is the levels are constantly broken up by horrendous "RPG" elements. The fans like to call it RPG elements, because that way if you criticize the fact that their is far too much dialouge, or that you seem to spend the majority of the time backtracking looking for a key or the door it fits in, they can say "Don't you know ANYTHING about an RPG!? Jeez!" and not worry about having to find fault with their beloved game.
But really this game is a SNOOZEFEST. From the moment you start it up and are forced to sit through a 20-minute opening sequence before you even take your first short step to running around the unfortunately large 'town' between every world looking for another damn heart pillar. Everything about this game screams boredom. Even the dialog that you will be subjected to in EVERY and I mean EVERY level and in between levels and before boss battles is not entertaining. There is no gripping story line that you will care about and the humour maybe lost something in translation because it's not there either. But on an average 45-minute session of this game you will probably spend just over 20-minutes clicking rapidly through line after line of dialog.
It's a shame too, because had I been on the graphic team I would be furious. The visuals are fantastic. The 2d worlds look great and the clever animation is wonderful. But you get sucked out of the world that the designers laboured to create every 15 seconds when you back in another chat fest.
I think I've gotten to the 6th world before my playing finally just slowed to a halt. And I know I won't pick it up again. There is no desire to keep going, like a game should give you. Instead it's only the feeling that "I spent $50 on this I should play it" but that wears off.
I really hope Nintendo gets with it. Zelda also bored me to tears since its the SAME Zelda game I've played seven or eight times now. I thought with a product as revolutionary as the Wii that maybe they were finally going to go against the status quo and create new and fun games again. But so far they are just porting the same old titles over to a new system.

  • Extraordinarily Disappointing
    By A1826DWYMHXYR5 on 2007-04-14
I was previously unaware of the "Paper Mario" franchise. However, I rushed out to buy this game, because I have been a big fan of every other Mario/Luigi game released for the various Nintendo platforms. I have never been so disappointed by a video game purchase in my life. I have basically given up after an hour and a half of play.

We are supposed to forgive poor graphics on the Wii, because it has innovative game play. Not only are the graphics for this games some of the most painful I have seen, but it does not take advantage of the Wii remote. The couple of actions you can perform with the remote are clearly an after thought, and the game would be better off without them.

My first hour and a half with this game was filled almost entirely by trying to rush through reading an extremely poorly written story. During that time, no interesting skills are learned nor are there any significant enemies.

Perhaps gamers who were aware of and enjoy the Paper Mario franchise will feel differently; however, I highly doubt that anybody who was a fan of prior Mario Bros. games will enjoy this one even slightly. I will be trading this game in ASAP.

    Pros:
    None that I can find.

    Cons:
    Painfully bad graphics.
    Poorly written storyline.
    Overly long-winded characters.
    Overly simple game play.
No control suitable for the Wii.

  • SUPER MARIO FUN!!
    By ALUTHT4U058KZ on 2007-07-03
I am a 26 year old recent Wii purchaser (that was an ordeal) and have been out looking for games. I now have:

    Wii Sports
    Wii Play
    Excite Truck
Rayman Raving Rabbids (the reason I bought the system, my wife was flipping over this when she saw it)
    Resident Evil 4
    WarioWare Smooth Moves
    and now
    Super Paper Mario

I used to play Mario as a kid both on my NES in the late 80's and Super Nintendo back in the early 90's, along with F-Zero and some other games I had. I had a 3DO after that for a while, but then have not gamed for over a decade.

The Wii has marked a triumphantly FUN return to gaming: as above, I am 26 and my wife is 21 and we are both having lots of fun. As for Mario, I must say that Super Paper Mario, for a former-Super-Mario-World player is just a TOP NOTCH experience.

Getting through the "RPG-style" story in the beginning (a style of gaming which I remember seeing friends play on their gameboys) was initially a concern of mine (because I think that stuff is boring), but the sarcasm and self-awareness of what they do is quite amusing and sucked me into the game.

The gameplay is very amusing, especially flipping back and forth between 2D and 3D...a new hilarious take on old Mario side-scrolling convention.

This is my personal favorite Wii game of the list above, because I like fun and it is just sheer fun. All others are awesome (Wii Sports is timeless, Resident Evil is epic and haunting, Excite Truck is EXCITING!, Wario is hilarious, etc.), but this is a big, enjoyable and clearly long-lasting game, since we don't play "hard," just casually.

  • Full to the Brim with the Charm, Simplicity, and Fun Nintendo is Known for.
    By A2999NM3UHRUOK on 2007-04-16
Super Paper Mario is a game that brings back the fond memories of playing the Super Mario Bros. games from the NES days and the Super Mario World games from a console generation later. The truly unique component of SPM is that the player can "flip" between the two-dimensional realm and the three-dimensional realm. The player can traverse through a level in 2-D, but may need to flip to 3-D to uncover a secret tunnel or passageway that would be impossible to see from a 2-D perspective.

The gameplay is solid and carries on the core style from previous Paper Mario games. The primary difference is that there are no more classic RPG elements like turn based battles. All enemies are fought on screen in the 'Old School Mario Game' way. You'll be able to control different characters and use other abilities to help you along.

The game is full of funny and wholesome humor that really amused me. There is one particular part of the game in which the player encounters a "super geek" and the entire scenario is done exceptionally. All the things that make this individual who he is, from his hardcore obsessive nature, to his laptop usage, comic book collecting, and fear of females is articulated through the in-game text in a very clever way. There are many other times throughout the game where I laughed out loud because of the dialogue.

The nostalgia factor is huge here. My sister who was watching me play this game, someone who never touches a video game, actually wanted me to hand her the controller. And she played...for a good while. Why was she interested? The reason is simply that she remembers the Mario Bros. magic from two decades ago that SPM rekindles. The memories of playing the classic Mario Bros. games will come flooding back to those that play this game and remember the old days. The Nintendo charm is what truly separates this game from everything else on the market. Everything is very endearing and even the "bad guys" are adorable...I'm looking at you, Bowser. The level design, characters, story, music, and humor all seem fairly simple, but yet are not simple at all. They all have been soaked with quality, a quality and depth that keeps you playing and playing until the end.

  • A "flipping" good time
    By A3E1JXR8IWVG5N on 2007-06-10
I never played the original Paper Mario, so I don't have a basis of comparison with this game, but I think the game stands on its own merits.

Super Paper Mario is a combination between the RPG and side-scrolling platformer genres. You collect points as you kill enemies, and those points count toward increasing your level. As your level increases, you increase either your HP or your attack power (it alternates, you don't get to choose which one).

As with most games of this type, there are a lot of story-based cut scenes which do have an entertaining story to them, but sometimes get long and tedious, especially at the very beginning, where there's a lot of setup.

You start out the game as Mario, after seeing Luigi, Peach and Bowser all sucked into some kind of dimensional vortex. You set off to find and rescue Peach, and recover 8 Pure Hearts to save the world. Along the way you also have a Pixl friend accompanying you to help you along. You find additional Pixls with different abilities (like creating bombs or giving you a super-stomp ability for flattening large objects). As you progress through the game, you find the other characters and add them to your party, and you'll use their unique abilities in different ways. Mario has the ability to do the dimension flip I'll talk about in a second, Peach can use her umbrella to glide long distances or hide from damage, Bowser can wipe out enemies with fire breath and does double stomping damage, and Luigi has a super-high spring jump. There are also at least a dozen or so Pixls with varying abilities that need to be used in different ways.

The game itself is primarily the usual Super Mario action... you run to the right and jump over obstacles and on enemies. One cool thing is that you can shake the remote up and down after jumping on an enemy to get a bonus score. For enemies that take more than one hit, you can do this repeatedly for increasing bonus points. Sometimes you reach obstacles that you can't jump over. This is where the really interesting part of the game comes in.

Early in the game, you learn the ability of "flipping" which is triggered by pressing the "A" button and turns the game world 90 degrees so you can see a different perspective. For instance, if you are going along and run into a really tall pipe that you can't jump over, flipping may show you a path as simple as just walking around it. Flipping also sometimes reveals hidden treasures or paths.

The game overall provides enough challenge, leading you to switch characters and Pixls frequently to solve puzzles, but without getting tedious and repetitive. The space levels were particularly entertaining.

I expect a casual player can finish the game in approximately 30 hours, and it's fun for adults as well as younger kids. It doesn't rely as much on fine motor control skills and precise jumping (though those certainly can help in some situations), but does focus more on making you think how best to use your characters and Pixls to beat certain obstacles or bosses.

I would really only ding this game on replayability... it doesn't strike me as a game I'm going to be likely to pick up and play again once I've finished it. Not because it's a bad game, but because it just won't be different, so what would be the point?

  • Don't Buy it - minus 5 stars
    By A201WQDRAHM99O on 2007-10-03
After turning the game on you have to push the A key a couple of 100 times to get through some story background - I don't care I want to play the game. After going back and forward and up and down a few elevators and into some rooms where people wanted money - of which I had none and didn't know how to get - despite the story I gave up and played a different game.
I will not buy another Mario game.

  • This is the best game ever!
    By on 2007-04-11
Well, after two hours of game play I gotta say that this is one FUN game.
My sister bought it with her B-day money and I wasn't so sure she'd like it at first. Well, I was wrong. xD Both my sisters love it (10&6) and so do I!

The grafics are just like Paper Mario, TTYD. So thats cool! The characters are all lovable. Bowser is funny (My fave charrie) And its just a cute, funny, FUN game. Its really awesome going from 2D to 3D to! Everything looks like paper, Its really neat. The pixles are so cool to! I like the butterfly. :P

I was surprised at this, but the controlls are very easy! You hold the Wii remote sideways, and that works very well.

I've been a fan of Paper Mario64, Then Paper Mario TTYD(The thousand year door) and now this! All three are super fun. This is now one of my favorite games, I'd give it more stars if I could!

Overall, I'm very happy with this game, and my sisters like it to! :)

  • Less talk, more action
    By A3J0UT062IURHC on 2007-04-16
I'm blown away with how much reading I have to do in this game and how little game play there is. The characters have these voice bubbles over them and there's literally 60 minutes of dialogue that you have to page through before you get to any action. With the old Mario Brothers, you could just turn the machine on and go. With this version, it's just going through blah blah blah blah blah blah.

  • One of the best Wii games out there
    By A2MTR11NBZLV3M on 2007-04-18
Super Paper Mario, without a doubt, is one of the best Nintendo Wii games out there. If you loved the old school days playing all the Super Marios then you'll love this. It takes the classic 2D gameplay and gives it a little extra spice with the ability to switch into 3D whenever you want.

In the beginning all the heavy dialogue was a bit tedious to go through (it lasted about 15-20 minutes) because I was anxious to just get into playing the game. However, it's not as bad as some of the other reviewers are making it out to be. If you're interested in the story and the characters it's quite enjoyable and the storyline is very creative and amusing. You just have to give it a chance and allow yourself to get into it.. it won't disappoint, I promise!

Playing the game is relatively easy, but some of the levels are hard to figure out (at least for me!). I recommend the game for young teens and up because children might find some levels difficult and probably won't want to sit through reading all of the character text.

  • Starts off well, gets worse as you play it
    By A37GZ6ETUTWGE4 on 2007-05-16
Super Paper Mario is a tragic example of what can happen to a celebrated franchise after 25 years; It's a game that starts out strong, but gets progressively worse as you play it. This Mario game will probably draw you in from the start with its charming art style and numerous references to older games, not to mention the ability to shift from 2D side-scrolling to 3D exploration at a moment's notice, which lets you look at old levels in a whole new way. Unfortunately, somewhere around halfway through things take a turn for the worse, by forcing you to play through levels filled with tedious backtracking, unclear goals and merciless repetition that all add up to a frustratingly boring experience. All in all, you might enjoy Super Paper Mario as a rental, but it won't take long before it overstays its welcome. Don't be fooled by the title; This Mario is far from Super.

  • So do you play it or just read?
    By AQEUYYVNFT5F3 on 2007-06-02
This is horrible! I am so glad I rented this game opposed to buying it outright but it isn't even worth the $7 rental fee and after 30 mins, well that's 30mins of my life I'll never see again.

I gave up. There is NOTHING but scrolling through lame story. There's no game here, if there is, you have to endure more than 30 mins of bad music and lame dialog bubbles or worthless chatter. You get to walk a few feet then MORE talk and dialog bubbles of worthlessess.

If I could give less than 1 star I would.

  • Great Wii Game Fun for All Ages
    By A3J029KBNG5MNP on 2007-12-11
One of the biggest transitions for video games during the seventh generation is the fact that more and more games are adding more and more online content. While no one is going to argue the fact that this is great for gaming, it sort of hurts those who love a good single player experience. Super Paper Mario answers this call and is a staple among the first wave of Wii games. It doesn't have a multiplayer mode but then again there are a million multiplayer games already out for Wii.

Super Paper Mario is the original Mario Bros meets Paper Mario. It isn't quite one or the other, it's a little of both. I was disappointed by this at first because I loved the turn based action of the first one when I was younger but after about an hour of playing I started to get hooked. The dialogue is very funny and even though it's long it's very enjoyable if you take the time to read it.

The storyline is similar to that of every Mario game, big bad captures Princess Peach, Mario saves the day. Only this time Bowser is on your side and thank God he is because he'll come in handy on more than one occasion. Luigi and Peach are also in your party and round out your team with their abilities. The plot revolves a evil man named Count Bleck who rips a hole in this place called Flipside. Mario must found the pieces of the True Heart to save Flipside and his friends. He is accompanied by Luigi, Peach, Bowser, and these creatures called Pixls. Instead of the various characters you use to fight with in the first two games, you use pixls who each give your character certain power up likes a hammer attack or even making Mario little depending on which one you use. A lot of the game calls for you to sit down and examine the situation so that you can figure out which Pixl and character you need to use. This can be tricky and some points.

The game play is like that of the original Super Mario Bros. You hold the Wii remote like a NES controller, the nunchuck is not used in the game. You can point the Wii remote at you TV to reveal certain things and shake it to use power ups on enemies but not much of the game revolves around this. Some people say the game is short but depending on the skill level it should take you fifteen to twenty hours to beat. It isn't Zelda or Final Fantasy in that sense but a little kid can beat it without being frustrated or getting bored.

There aren't a whole lot of really good single player games out for the Wii and if you're looking for some good single player action and have beaten Metroid and Zelda than Super Paper Mario is the game for you. It's a lot of fun and I enjoyed it a lot.

  • The game that won't shut up
    By AH656QJR9LJWZ on 2007-06-09
The cut scenes for this game last for...eve...er. Seriously, blab blab blab. And, it's not a complicated story to explain. If what you enjoy is playing a game, don't buy this one. You spend half your time reading mediocre blather. Also, it's obvious that they didn't make the game with the Wii in mind. When you play the game, you turn the controller horizontally, and use it like you would any other older Nintendo controller. This is pointless as a Wii game, and kind of stupid and slow as any kind of game.

  • A cute game weighed down by a...very...very...slow...sto....ry!
    By A319SKSB556033 on 2008-01-11
As much as I enjoyed Super Paper Mario, I just wasn't impressed by any part of it. It's a cute Mario game (as they all are) but I never felt like I was really playing an RPG and the endless dialogue bubbles really slow the game down.

The levels are colorful and bright and look absolutely gorgeous. The music is pleasant enough but the trademark Mario theme barely gets a mention. As for the gameplay, well...it's standard Mario platform stuff with the new addition of flipping to 3D and some unique abilities with the Wii controller. It's nothing to write home about.

For 20 hours I stuck with this game and by the bitter end I felt like I could have used that time to do something better. Honestly nothing in this game impresses and if I didn't have a photographic memory I'd be completely forgetting about it in a week. If that makes any sense.

So...very...very...slow. I don't like video games like this. If I wanted to read a book I'd read one. In the end, it's the endless dialogue that cripples SPM.

    Pros:

    Very nice graphics.
    Incredibly cute.
    Easy to control.
Giant Mario from NSMB returns (though it's equally as brief and pointless)

    Cons:

    Cut-scenes take FOREVER!
Way, way, waaaaaaay too much dialogue.
    Flipside missions are very boring.
Gets tedious and repetitive about halfway through.

  • Great game, but not for young kids
    By ASPDJ9EKEBH0N on 2007-04-12
When I first heard about Super Paper Mario coming to the Wii, I expected that Nintendo's trusted Plumber would captivate a new generation of Nintendo fans just like he did 20 years ago with our generation. Little did I know that Super Paper Mario turned out to be a Role-Play/Platform-Jumper hybrid, made to please the hardcore gamer.

Nevertheless, Super Paper Mario is a fun and engaging game, where players must switch from a 2D world to 3D world and back to unlock puzzles and overcome obstacles. The game features huge amounts of reading, during which the player must extract clues and hints to successfully complete the task on hand. The game introduces a variety of playable characters (Luigi, Princess Peach, Bowser) and other helpers named "Pixls" throughout the game.

Children should be at least 10-12 years of age, depending on their reading level in order to really enjoy the game. I highly recommend the game to Parents and everyone from Generation NES, because Super Paper Mario is not only compelling and well designed, but it also offers short tie-ins to Mario's history.

  • Best Wii game so far
    By on 2007-04-15
I have never played a paper Mario game before, and I was extremely impressed. While the remote is not utilized, the controls are actually very good. The storyline is very funny at times, but the writing can be lengthy. Here is what I think about SPM.

Graphics-8/10-They aren't supposed to look like Madden on the 360, and the art designers did a great job with the way the graphics are done, but the 3D backgrounds are very poor.

Controls-10/10-Despite not using motion sensing, very sturdy controls.

Gameplay-9/10-Not perfect, but very fun and simple-Unless you're trying to figure out a tricky puzzle. That's hard (but fun!!!!!)

Story/Writing-8/10-Very funny lines in some parts and a creative story, but some of the text is too long.

Challenge-7/10-The actual gameplay has little challenge, but the puzzles can be very difficult. It isn't like playing Madden on rookie, though.

Overall-9/10-The best the Wii has to offer with Zelda, so be prepared for some fun!

    The things I disliked were:
    -LONG text in spots
    -Bland 3D backgrounds
    -A little too easy
-Uses the remote's motion sensing almost never (though I personally was fine with the controls).

    Everything else is great! Enjoy!

  • 2-D Or 3-D; That Is The Question?
    By A3W4D8XOGLWUN5 on 2007-04-30
Since the Nintendo Wii came out last year, many die hard gamers have been marveled with excitement over the way gamers can now play video games with the remote controller. There have been a lot of great games for it like The Legend Of Zelda: Twilight Princess, and Excite Truck. Sadly, many gamers have been anxiously waiting the new Super Mario Galaxy, and hoping Mario would deliver again. Unfortunately, gamers will have to wait. However, a different Mario game has arrived from the die hard Paper Mario franchise from the gamecube and Nintendo 64 eras. There also is something that makes this paper seem better than flat, but will it satisfy Mario fans for now?

Super Paper Mario for the Nintendo Wii, brings nack what made the Paper Mario games deliver in true role play. This time around, the game really does think out of the box, as Mario, Luigi, Peach and Bowser try to tackle the vicious Count Bleck and his minions Mr. L, Dimentio and others, as they tackle a fierce and wild world that seperates from the flipside and flopside. Each character has to unlock pixels, which help you through achievements from finding hidden doors, to lifting bosses. There are over 30 different levels in the game that bring back the classic 2-D side-scrolling action from the original Super Mario Brothers, with a different twist. Each character you play has a special ability. Peach and Luigi have a high jump, Bowser has the traditional fire-blazes, but Mario has the best ability. He can flip his world from a 2-D, to 3-D, to find hidden items and unlock hidden areas. The graphics in the game are absolutely beautiful, and really bring the classic gameplay into a whole new perspective, while the control is really on target most of the time. You do get a bit frustrated finding the unlocked doors, but everything else works like a charm. The story line also is fun and entertaining in each world of the game, while the story is cute but enjoyable for all the worlds.

All in all, Super Paper Mario is a well-rendered game for the Wii, and should entice new Mario fans, as well as those waiting Super Mario Galaxy. I really like this game because it is fun and exciting, for all ages and Nintendo junkies. This is one of the best games for the Wii, and any owner will love this game a lot.

    Graphics: B+

    Sound: B

    Control: B 1/2-

    Fun & Enjoyment: B+

    Overall: B 1/2+

  • Super Paper Mario
    By A1HOA0F5NERDC3 on 2007-05-06
first off, i want to say that the Wii is by far the most amazing gaming console out there right now.
super paper mario on the wii, is the first paper mario game i've played. i wasn't too sure i was going to like it. but i love love mario games so i figured why not? well the first time i put it in and started playing, i played for a good straight 3 hours. it's a great game. i love the whole aspect of switching between 2d and 3d. not to mention i really like that theres some scenes of the older mario games. i'm not sure if the paper mario games on the cube are the same, but i like how its pretty much a platform game. i also think the story line is very well thought out, and the writing is so clever, sometimes a little corny, but it makes the game that much more fun. i'd have to agree it's a little easy, but still challenging enough for me that its fun to play. overall i really enjoy the game, and recommend it to anyone.

  • Too much dialogue
    By A1QT7LTWEZRQFK on 2007-05-24

Unlike previous Mario titles, you can't just pick up "Super Paper Mario" and start crushing goombas. The game is so thick with dialogue that it distracts from the game. I just wanted mindless fun. You have to worry about equipping items, purchasing gear, leveling up, and using the 2D/3D "flip" ability to discover secrets (usually these secrets are required to progress further into the game).

The game is too complex for an action game and too simplistic for a RPG. I am still at a loss as to how to describe it. One would think that Super Paper Mario would find a cozy middle ground, but it doesn't. It's a pity, too. Super Paper Mario would be a strong title if its fast-paced gameplay wasn't bogged down by heavy exposition.

Oddly, I do suggest this game for parents looking for Wii games for their kids. Super Paper Mario reveals patches of rather sophisticated dialogue that kids, especially those who enjoy reading, will most likely find engaging.

  • Dont buy this game!
    By A2B42GGLJY4WEJ on 2007-11-19
i played the first two paper marios and i loved them. I beat the second one 3 times. So when the third paper mario came out i thought it would be the same as the other two except with a different story. I was wrong. The thing i loved about the first two was that there was a battle screen and part of the game was about getting mario better in battle. In the third one there is no battle screen and it is like super mario. I would have been okay with the game if there was a battle screen but there wasnt. So if youre looking for something like the 1st or 2nd paper mario DONT BUY THIS GAME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Old School meets New School
    By A2GKT73P8C9XMG on 2007-04-13
Super Paper Mario has all the love and fun that was packed into the first Mario Brothers game produced, but in a fresh, yet familiar, take on the Mario franchise.

Now, any veteran of the Nintendo and Super Nintendo classic Mario games will feel that this game is at a much slower pace. While there is plenty of jump and run action, this game has many RPG elements--lots of story, items, story, puzzles, oh and story. The story itself is very strange, but if you stop to read it (instead of skipping to the action), it's actually quite amusing. Also, you'll run into levels that leave you scratching your head until you remember to flip the world somewhere or wave the remote at some wall to find the way forward. Though, this is not so bad in my opinion, because you get to play the game longer.

So, Super Paper Mario may feel somewhat like the classic Mario gameplay, but it has so much more added to it wrapped up in a funny story. Definitely a must-own game for Mario fans who have managed to snap up a Wii.

  • Great, but too much talking.
    By A2SS6KSZKP2SYA on 2007-04-15
If you buy games for the story, you'll probably hate this one. The game play is unmistakably fun, but the story is so poor and dumb that you'll probably wonder how long they actually spent writing it! The first 20 or so minutes is just talking! other than that, the controls/puzzles are enough to buy the game. I like it. (P.S. I would also recommend Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess.)

  • Like a cross between Mario and Zelda
    By A35D8GS7WVCD18 on 2007-04-19
It's so much fun to go between 2-D and 3-D. There are different things to do, find and avoid in both dimensions. Writing and acting is fun and clever. Puzzles are very much like Zelda puzzles. I highly recommend this one!

  • Excellent mix of old and new
    By A2OR09N5HH20PY on 2007-04-19
Totally solid game. it takes a decent lenght of time to finish. gameplay is basically a mix of that classic 2d mario, with 3d platforming. you can change from 2d to 3d with the touch of a button, and you'll have to do so to solve many of the puzzles and find the hidden areas. funny (although too long/fequent) dialogue from classics as well as all new characters. not the best Mario game ever, but its deffinitely worthy of the name.

  • WHOA...
    By A3M81YQA9Z6F0W on 2007-04-21
    Andrew says:
I have seen absolutely no reason to mark this game down. The graphics work well with the story, the gameplay is intuitive and fun, it draws you in without trapping you, and the story is really cool.

    I say:
This is the most interesting game since--probably Ocarina of Time. Not that there haven't been other great games, but those two seem to push the boundaries of gaming itself into new zones. With Ocarina of Time, the concept of controlling the world around with music was extremely powerful and accomplished in a way that was the perfect blend of skill and memory. It also pushed itself graphically, using motion capture for Link's animation and attempting new cinematic effects the likes of which have perhaps not been seen since. Super Paper Mario is a trip through the light fantastic, to be sure, and its flipping capabilities and puzzles mess with your perception through the entire game. Honestly, these people MUST be crazy--and geniuses--to have come up with such entertaining and fascinating visual play. A seemingly solid wall you were standing on is actually a thin pathway with twists and turns. A seemingly solid obstacle can simply be walked around! Crazy.
