Nuance's SmartShopper is an automated grocery list assistant. Using Nuance's state-of-the-art voice recognition technology, you simply press a button on the unit and speak the name of a grocery item you will need on your next shopping trip. A large LCD Screen shows the items that have been input into the unit, in alphabetical order. Then, when you are ready to shop, print out a list with the built-in thermal printer. The SmartShopper comes with a strong magnet which allows you to keep it on the refrigerator door. It can also easily be wall mounted, or just store it in a drawer. The SmartShopper is made out of a durable, hard plastic with a brushed aluminum front that will make a great impression in any kitchen.

This nifty organizer from SmartShopper eliminates the need to dig up a pad of paper and a pencil and try to remember what you need when you want to make a shopping list. Keep this handy device stuck to your fridge magnetically, or mount it on the kitchen wall with the included kit, and you're set to go. At breakfast when the milk runs out, simply push the Record button and say "milk." At lunch when you realize you're out of bread, push and speak again. Kids will love helping out. You can also add errands, such as going to the bank or post office. Entries are automatically alphabetized. When you push the Print button, the list is printed with errands at the top and food items by category, to make your shopping expeditions more efficient.

Easy and intuitive to use, the SmartShopper is already loaded with state-of-the-art voice recognition software, a thermal printer that doesn't require ink, and 2,500 item names, for everything from brand-name cereals to antacids to paper towels. Three rolls of thermal paper are included as well. All you need to add are four AA batteries. Arrow buttons allow you to scroll through your list, delete an item if you wish, or add a customized item to the pre-loaded list. With its brushed metal exterior, large LCD window, and front-loading door for paper, the SmartShopper makes a great gift, especially for those who may have trouble writing due to arthritis and other health conditions. --Ann Bieri MPN: SS101 - UPC: 892193001014

  • ~~ Honey Hush - Talk About a MUST HAVE ~~

    By A3UM9RFKUQ0GIX on 2007-07-01
I saw this on QVC and thought it was a neat idea. So I mulled over it for a couple of weeks.

I decided to order it from Amazon - something about the free shipping and cheaper price that won me over. hahahahaha

It was on backorder at the time and I was surprised when it just showed up one day.

We love it. My hubby, who is always skeptical about my gadget purchases, was surprised when he used it. He thinks it's a neat idea - and the fact that it organizes everything by category on your list automatically is simply GENIUS!!!

Press the button say the item you need to add - it shows up - select it from a list of options and it adds it to the list. When you are ready to go shopping simply press print - and it prints out the list. Easy as that.....

No more sitting at the table trying to remember what you need - just add the items to the list as you can think of them. The list stays until you delete it.

Plus it even lists errands - another added bonus. Need to run to the bank, atm, cleaners, lawyer's office...

Another plus - is that you can add your own items, or errands, if they aren't listed.

If you have problems with it recognizing your voice or speech - you can TEACH IT to understand your diction. Talk about a HOT MESS!!1

As you can tell - I LOVE THIS THING!! Best gadget I have ever bought!!

Try it - you won't be disappointed!!!!

  • Wonderful gadget.

    By A3RTB19B1ZJ0HB on 2007-06-12
Really love this thing. Saves time trying to remember all what you need to buy. I am surprised it works as well as it does. Sometimes it dosen't compute your voice right but if you have an "east coast" accent it really helps. If your "native" to south of the Mason/Dixon line I would pay to see that! Great invention. Very happy.

  • A really great product!

    By A2HC6DS4I7S0ES on 2007-07-13
If I could rate this product higher, I would! It's a great item, hangs on the side of the frig, easy to use, makes my life so much easier! Only wish they had invented it 40 years ago. Better late than never ......

  • Prehastoric Technology

    By A2TOU2URM0CN0B on 2007-05-31
    Prehistoric Technology

I purchased the SmartShopper thinking that the technology was a bit outdated. I was right! Although SmartShopper is a new concept I am not pleased with it. I am returning it because it didn't suite my needs. SmartShopper didn't categorize foods correctly when I hit "print". I had to repeat numerous items to get the right one because it only gives you three items to choose from. There should be a color screen and a way to interact and customize your grocery list etc.... I didn't find it suitable for me and my needs. Maybe Im asking too much but this product could be better evolved. Honestly, its not worth my money and if it ever become more consumer specific with evolved technology then I would consider purchasing it. I think it's a waste of time and money for the output of the product.

  • I love it, I hate it

    By AY6SOCFKS98FE on 2008-02-23
When this thing works it's wonderful, but I have had some problems. First a note on troubleshooting problems. Don't talk TOO LOUD. I had to turn the sensitivity down on mine. This unit is so sensitive that it sometimes hears too many sounds to accurately understand what you are saying. This is the opposite of what most people would instinctively do. Most people try to talk louder if they think someone can't hear them. You may also have to mute the TV if it is too loud.
    Pros(Besides the obvious):
    1. It has a very strong built in magnet that allows you to put it on your refrigerator just at your speaking level, never gets lost and items stay on list until you remove them, even if you take out a battery.
    Cons:
1.There are some words that it seems to refuse to recognize, no matter what you do. (i.e. I tried to add calendar to my smartshopper and no matter how many times I improved voice recognition, it would not recognize it. I even removed collander from the smartshopper so there was nothing similar. That didn't help. It kept coming up with the most rediculous suggestions to what I had said that were not even remotely similar. I finally ended up adding wall calendar instead.)
    2. Again, talk softly.
    3. Sometimes mine freezes up and sticks on Record Now. I can usually break this by taking a battery out and putting it back and then it works fine again.

So when it works I love this, when it doesn't I hate it. I have learned over the last couple of months to deal with its quirks, so I mostly love it.

  • Not So Smart Shopper
    By ANGAZB8CVYJ1J on 2007-10-11
Disappointing ... didn't recognize "eggs" or "yogurt" when both were in the dictionary provided. It was returned the following week. To my amazement, I paid return shipping and the company charged me yet another $15 for returning it. I'll never purchase anything from them again!SmartShopper Electronic Grocery List Organizer - SS101

  • It really does work
    By A3NUHUD8BJ0V6Y on 2007-10-03
This product really does work as advertised. The pre-loaded list of items is impressive. And it's not difficult to train the device to recognize new items. One tip: Try to speak as naturally as possible. I've noticed that if you over-enunciate, sometimes the device gets confused. Pears sounds to it like jars, for example. I think the device tends to focus on syllables, as opposed to individual letters, so talk normally to it. When my partner taught it half-and-half, he didn't try to say each word. He just said, "haf-n-haf," the way he normally would. Also, don't pre-suppose that there are individual items it doesn't know. For example, it doesn't just recognize "cheese." It knows many kinds of cheeses. The device comes with a book that lists all of the pre-programmed words, but I've found few words that it doesn't know.

  • Love our SmartShopper
    By A20KRX68702UWX on 2007-11-17
Making a store list is both convenient and fun with the SmartShopper. When we run low, or out of an item, push the button, say what is needed, and it's there! No more fumbling for pen and paper. Includes a very comprehensive list of items (Zud cleanser? Never heard of it in California). Adding custom items to the list is fairly easy, but a quiet room is a must. Then, we print out the list and go shopping. Items are grouped by product type, e.g., fruits and vegetables, making shopping easy. We love ours so much, that we are buying one for each of our immediate families for Christmas. Did I mention that it's also FUN?

  • About a 75% failure rate on recognizing common words
    By AREG7WCO7ULGB on 2008-01-13
For comedic purposes, it's even better than the Apple Newton's handwriting recognition. Amuse your family members as "milk" is recognized as "halibut", "baby formula" becomes "meat" (who just writes "meat" on their list instead of the specific type?), and "duck" becomes "dog food" (at least it got the first letter right).

We did get to recognize "eggs" on the first try.

But practically speaking, it would take 10x longer to create a grocery list compared to writing it down. It's a shame it doesn't work better - would be a fun way to do the list.

We never got far enough with it to see how it would handle something like "2 pounds of ground beef" or "3 oranges".

Family members who tried it have rather plain accents and weren't suffering from colds.

  • Smart Shopper is Great!
    By A150G6X5TQLSX7 on 2007-06-06
Ever made a mental note about something you needed next time you shopped, only to forget the item on shopping day? Smart Shopper lets you randomly input items during the week, then on shopping day, you can add to the already stored list, all the food stuff you need to buy. The list stays on the screen even after the machine powers off. You can earmark items that you have coupons to redeem, change units like 1/2 gallon to 1 gallon and best of all, by voice recongition, you can add your personal favorites like specific cereals or juices by name. You can choose your categories for your custom list and when you're ready, press print and your entire list prints out, ready for your shopping trip, arranged for your convenience by grocery section. It can sit, hang and even is magnetic if you have a place to attach it. I found the voice recognition to be acceptable. Slightly tedious when inputting custom names, but once done, the machine finds all my items easily. I love this!

  • SmartShopper
    By A2DGIGDXPP3AZZ on 2007-06-14
I have had this about two weeks now. When I first got it from Amazon, it was broken and I had to call the company instead of Amazon to return it. They replaced the item within the next week which surprised me.

I have used it already and it seems to work good. I did have to try three sets of new batteries from the time I got the first unit to when I am using the second one. When I printed the list it didn't print real well the first time and then it told me to change batteries so I did and reprinted fine.

The only problem I seem to have is getting it to recognize my voice on certain words. IT takes me alot of trys for some and none for others. I am not sure why.

I like it because I have it on my refrig and when I am making dinner, etc and run out of something or getting low I can add it to my list without any trouble.

The batteries are suppose to last about 2 to 3 months I think depending on how often you print I guess. We will see with this new set of batteries in how long they last. I also like the idea I can add words and change words.

I think this is a great product and there could be some possibilities to improve or expand.

It lists everything in catagories. I just have to get used to the way it organizes otherwise it is great!

I would recommend this to others. It saves me from finding paper to write a list plus if my list changes before I get to the store I can update it before I print and not have a bunch of "scratch-outs" on paper. It also helps that my 3 yr old doesn't get a hold of my list either.

  • This thing is great!!
    By AR9ALZI6DTPXS on 2007-09-14
I absolutely love my SmartShopper.SmartShopper® Grocery List Organizer, Model SS101. This item makes creating a grocery list so easy for me and my family. I have it hanging on the refrigerator. When I notice an item I need I just hit the record button and say the item. There is a huge menu saved in the SmartShopper and you can easily add your own itesm. I had no problem adding to the memory. You do have to arrow through the letters but you can also say the letter you want in the curser moves to it. My kids think this tool is fun. They like that they can add to my list when they need something. My favorite part is that your list is organized by category when you print it (the list is alphabetical on the SmartShopper screen). This saves me huge amounts of time in the store. All my produce is grouped together, all my meat is grouped together, etc. You can also organized your errands on your list as well, (bank, drycleaner, library, etc.)

use it every day---easy to operate--eliminates many notes scattered all over my ehouse

  • WOW!!!!
    By A1PMXU84LUK9F5 on 2007-08-30
This thing is FFFANTASTIC!!! I just received mine yesterday & it's just like I thought, but better. The voice recognition works fine, besides it does give multiple choice on most things, but soooooooo idiot proof, even I can use it w/o the help of my super high tech husband's help & I am technology challenged! *LOL* I HIGHLY RECOMMEND this handy, dandy organizer to ANYONE! I just think the price is a bit high, but it is very new out there & prices will go down eventually. It's still a novelty. I bought my 1st TIVO at $500 back in 1999 when they were fresh off the market, knowing very well they'd go way down in price, but it was a gift to my husband who's in the technology business and it's often hard to
wait. He gladly purchased this for me now as he was just as anxious to play with it as I was/am. Best toy in the house!!! Amazon was the cheapest I found in price, beating out target & most places that charge $149.99! I LOVE Amazon and they ship fast as well. This was sent & delivered to me within 48 hrs. & that's with free shipping.

    UPDATE: SEPTEMBER 13, 2007

A big help would be if they're was a way to edit a long list, as they do tend to grow, with the ability to print out a partial list of the main items for those frequent quick stops in between payday for a few items. Just an idea that I know would help me & others like myself who find themselves with a mile long list for 'grocery/errand days' and the need to make a shorter list without deleting the main one.
Maybe that'll be the next, updated version. I still think it's way over priced for most.

  • Very Disappointed
    By A2PJF8R64DFX27 on 2008-01-18
This product does not work and does not make organizing your grocery list anything but frustrating. However it did give our family a lot of comic relief - instead of an expensive new-techno kitchen gadget for our mom for Christmas, I would classify this as a family game. We hear our mom clearly stating "bread" and the item confirms "noodles". No one could contain their laughter - "ketchup...confirm salad dressing". The cost, frustration and disappointment eventually over-rode the humor.

  • BUYER BEWARE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
    By A2OLIDTEQ0H0SV on 2008-01-19
The super shopper is by far the biggest waist of money, if you want another refrigerator magnet just go to a hardware store, voice recognition software is awful, set up an item, record a voice tag then try the item, still does not work, very disapointed, just too much of a hassle to return. Live and learn. 1 star, just because you can't send a review for anything less.

  • Bad,Bad,Bad!!!!!!!!!!!!!
    By A201OBZL2XLJN5 on 2008-01-19
P.O.S.!!!!!!! and the advertising is misleading. After speaking the item you must chose the correct item from a list of like and not so like items, If your lucky. Because the voice recognition system is the pits.On a good day it's about 50/50. Keep the pencil and paper.

  • List Organizer is Quirky
    By A1FZ12CDJRR80B on 2007-07-29
While the organizer seems to work, you need to speak what you want several times to get it recognized. Sometimes when it does, choosing select does not respond. Best feature is the sort so you can shop easier.

  • Smartshopper Grocery List Organizer
    By A30QJYIT6ZINYW on 2007-08-06
This is very handy although there are some problems with the names of items such a chicken soup. I know I can program that phrase in but haven't taken the time to do that. The soup catagory is just that - soup - no distinction as to kind.

  • Saves me money at store !
    By A751QF1YTG189 on 2007-08-13
I love this little thing! Even my doubtful hubby got a kick out of this.(I'm the gadget girl around here.) Seems to understand me and gets what I'm saying more that 99% of the time. It has an amazing amount of items programed in and you can add more. I really like that errands are in their own category. Now if it's not on the smartshopper list, I don't buy it! Which of course, I should have done before; but this makes it so much more fun.:) Prevents all those duplicate items or forgotten items because I add them as I think about it, like when I'm cooking/cleaning etc. Reduced my stacks of post-it note lists all over my counter/house. I would buy this again and now it's even less than when I got mine.

  • BOY! Does this suck, or what?
    By A3KFRVX3AO1K3X on 2007-12-29
I bought this for my wife....I thought it was a nifty idea. Too bad IT SUCKS! My wife is from CA so she does not have a Bronx accent as I do. Maybe it understands GUAMESE? It sure doesn't understand English. Maybe it's an illegal alien.........STAY AWAY FROM THIS ONE!

  • Unsatisfactory
    By A2UE1584RWS4TD on 2008-01-02
The product involved is a SmartShopper grocery list organizer, model SS101. My wife decided she did not want it--too cumbersome. The problems began when I wanted to return it. eek Technologys decided to accept it back, but they are charging me a 20% "restocking fee" (a penalty). Because of this policy, I will never do business with them again; and if your policy is the same, I will not do business with Amazon again either.

  • SmartShopper is a flop
    By A1OM27807O62RP on 2008-01-08
Very disappointed in this product. For this amount of money I would expect it to work much better. Voice recognition of library contents is only about 10% effective. Frequently need to reset the unit as it seems to get confused easily when you have to repeat attempts to record an item. I would not recommend this product. Paper and pen work much better for making a grocery list.

  • GREAT GADGET! VERY USEFUL.
    By A2R397A9XKZYYR on 2007-06-08
THIS IS THE BEST INVENTION SINCE WHITE BREAD! I WAS SURPRISED AT THE ACCURACY OF THE VOICE RECOGNITION FEATURE. THE NUMBER OF PRODUCTS IT RECOGNIZES IS AMAZING, AND IF BY CHANCE THERE'S SOMETHING YOU NEED NOT ON THE LIST, IT'S EASY TO PROGRAM IT IN. IT IS ESPECIALLY USEFUL FOR DISABLED OR MOBILITY-IMPAIRED PEOPLE SUCH AS I AM. YAYYY! I DON'T EVER HAVE TO STRUGGLE WITH A PENCIL AND PAPER AGAIN!

  • Smartshopper's not dumb
    By A3INLIJFK9E2MU on 2007-07-31
The product concept is excellent, the product itself is very good. The voice recognition is good, not excellent, and when you input a non-listed item, the input method is a bit tedious and the cursor jumps around unprompted. This happened on two different Smartshoppers because I sent the first one back because of it. But when the voice recognition works, which is most of the time, it is excellent. It saves time and printing the list out is a no-brainer. Love to see version 2.

  • What a find !!
    By AJI7P21FO7YKG on 2007-09-29
I first saw this product on a TV talk show and thought that it could replace all the tiny bits of paper in my handbag with my scribbled shopping lists.

Not only can I record what I need as I run out of it but it prints all my items in categories so that my shopping time is reduced as I only need to visit each section of the store just once.

I could not believe how easy it was to set up and get going.

I am an australian and I was concerned about the smart shopper acknowledging my accent but it recognizes my voice without a problem.

I am constantly suprised at the amount of items that are already programmed into the machine. When I think that I will need to add an item to the library - it pops up on the screen!

I love it so much that I am giving one each to my sisters, my mother and my mother-in-law as christmas presents. It is so refreshing to purchase a product that actually does what it says it does.

I am a chef, so not only do I use the Smart Shopper at home but I also use it at work.

Even my husband is starting to get into the habit - as he runs low of something out of the refrigerator he automatically adds it to the Smart Shopper so I know to buy more and now we never run out.

Well done Smart Shopper - its a winner !!!

  • OUTSTANDING PRODUCT!!
    By A2PMCFAKD7G6L4 on 2007-10-13
I absolutely LOVE this product! It's so easy and FUN to use, right out of the box. It recognizes almost all of the products I speak into it. I can add custom items as well. Saves Time and Money....No more forgetting to get something at the store and having to go back over and over. You also have the option of putting in that you have a coupon for a particular item. I can go on and on about the good things. There are only 2 drawbacks as far as I can tell right now - the first (for some) is that you have to speak correct English to use it. The second is that it is Way Overpriced. If you love electronic gadgets then this product is for you.

  • Item is too hard for elderly to use
    By A1IL7OZTSC0MDP on 2008-01-07
We bought this for my 85 year old father. He had a lot of trouble with it. When he put in say soup, it gave him options and the print was such that he couldn't read it fast enough before the prompt was gone. When he tried to hang it on the refrigerator he somehow opened it and the paper fell out. He was very frustrated with it and that is why I have returned it. It sounded really good to me but he just wasn't going to use it.

  • Don't Waste Your Money
    By A3SQWZNJQVA15G on 2008-01-10
My husband loves gadgets and thought this would be a nice Christmas gift for me. NOT. It has serious problems with voice recognition; for example, we cannot get it to list "bananas" which is in the library. It's much easier for me to write my list on a piece of paper. A real big waste of money!

  • Works well
    By A2RYC52KN946XF on 2008-01-20
It works nicely. Can even add your own things to its library. Cons are is that it should be quiet when you speak into it and it doesn't shut off. Otherwise it's great
