  • Better Than Solitaire

    By A3TNXO38PRCBP5 on 2007-06-14
This is an excellent version of Mahjong. Mahjong is a game that originated in China. It's similar to solitaire, but you match tiles instead of cards. The tiles have Chinese letters and numbers on them. This version of Mahjong has three different types of games. There is Traditional Mahjong, Mahjong Quest, and Mahjong Puzzles. There are 88 different tile layouts to choose from in Traditional Mahjong. This game has great graphics. I have a 17-inch monitor. This game will display at 800 by 600 pixels on my monitor. I never tried this game at higher resolutions. My computer is not fast enough to display higher resolutions. I think the detailed graphics and user-friendly interface set this game apart from other mahjong games. You can skip the animations that occur during Mahjong Quest by pressing the space bar on the keyboard. In Mahjong Quest, you play as a character named Kwazi. Dragons are wreaking havoc on Kwazi's village, and you must defeat the dragons by matching tiles and clearing each tile layout. I'm not sure how removing tiles affects dragons, but that's how you force the dragons to leave your village. There are two unique tiles on each board. They are the Yin and Yang tiles. Every tile will be automatically removed from the board if you can match Yin with Yang. That sounds easy, but it's not. The Yin and Yang tiles are usually buried beneath the other tiles. This game will definitely test your puzzle-solving skills, and you don't have all day to sit and ponder because every layout on the board is timed. You have to think fast and clear each board of tiles, or the dragons will destroy your village. You have plenty of time to clear the tiles. You also have extra lives, and you can gain lives by earning bonus points. This is a game that will keep you coming back for more. There are more than eighty tile layouts in Traditional Mahjong, but every outcome is different. This version works with Windows XP, but it also works with Windows 98/ME/NT/2000. You need at least a 400 Mhz computer to make this game run smoothly. This game should run smoothly on any computer that was made after 1997. You can also buy Mahjong Quest 2 for about ten dollars more. Mahjong Quest 2 is a big game. Mahjong Quest 2 has 144 tile layouts, and you have the ability to compete with other players connected to the internet. Mahjong Quest 2 has basically the same system requirements as Mahjong Quest.

UPDATE: I did have a problem with the sound after I installed this game. The audio kept making a crackling noise each time after I started the game. Be sure to read the README.RTF file located in the game directory if you have a problem with the sound. The file should be located in C:\Program Files\Mah Jong Quest. README.RTF explains how you can add "AudioBufferSize=1536" to the GAME.CFG file if you want to fix the problem with the sound.

There are lots of different options with configurations/screens or you can stick with standard Mahjong. It's addictive.

  • Give Me A Break

    By A26GB2E87JAGN5 on 2008-03-29
When you buy a game, you expect to have fun and play the game for a good, long time. In the case of this Mahjong based game, you must be prepared to 'hit a wall'. There will come a time...long before you have gotten very far into the story...when the game will become IMPOSSIBLE TO PLAY.

I have played Mahjong in several versions for several years, but I have never found one that has NO SOLUTION. To make matters worse, the hints are worthless at that point. Your choice will be quit completely or be content to only play the lower levels of the game and never move beyond 'a certain point of frustration'.

  • Challenging

There are plenty of challenging boards. If you like Mahjong you will like this game.

  • Mahjong Qest

This version is a bit simple and has numbers on the tiles which is not very true to the game of Mahjong. It would be ok for beginners. There is a block at the end on some games and not a high quality game.

  • An answer to insomnia.......not to mention, addictive!

I didn't know what to expect having just learned how to play mah jongg with 3 other players, but I must say this game is very helpful in learning and remembering tile names. I also bought this game for my sister who was recuperating at home after surgery. She has enjoyed the game too, especially while being confined to an upstairs bedroom.
