  • Great Mouse For Gaming

    By AF9HA1VWR6JXS on 2007-04-03
The G5 is a durable, well designed mouse. I have been using it for over a year now with no problems. It's very comfortable in the hand and the ability to add or subract weight from it (by adding little weights that fit inside on the bottom) makes it perfect for the gamer. By adding or subtracting weight you can get the feel and the flow that you are looking for. Once you find that "sweet spot" weight, you will really get spoiled by this mouse.

It's not cordless, but for me that's a positive thing. I hate having to constantly add new batteries or sit my mouse on its charger. I can sit down and start using it with no problems. The mouse chord is plenty long and it's not real rigid like a lot of older mouse chords. So your movements are not hampered by the chord.

All in all it's the best mouse I've ever used... and I've been using them ever since they've existed.

  • Solid quality and feel.

    By A1E9GXXQRLNTYC on 2007-06-08
This mouse feels great in your hand and the weights add an extra measure of balance. While this mouse is specifically made for gaming, it is an enhancement against the basic laser mouse even within Windows applications due to its enhanced movement precision.

  • Great mouse for anything, not just games

    By A20G074MWH9U7O on 2007-09-24
I had gotten my wife a replacement mouse, an expensive MS one, and she thought it was too light and cheap feeling. So I looked at all the mice available and decided to try this one because of the weights. She loves it!!! It has a great feel, she could set the responsiveness just how she likes it, and we weighted up to where she thought it felt just right.

Note that she is not a game player (except solitaire), really just surfing the web and doing email/word/excel. I ended up with the expensive MS mouse and it does feel cheap and is too light . . . oh well, maybe I can get one of the Logitech G5's for Xmas.

  • Good mouse gets better

    By AM0QLU79O05JR on 2007-07-07
This mouse has always needed more buttons and the two side buttons fill my needs nicely. I have an existing G5 that I am using for my work computer now that I have bought this one. It also looks cool. if you use a mouse get the Steermouse drivers as Logitech has not mac drivers for this mouse and their mac drivers in general are horrible.

  • Disappointing accuracy - cord too stiff?

    By ADL99BNQIWH7B on 2007-11-17
I've been using the G5 for a few days now and I'm just about to step out and buy a cordless replacement.

The problem might be due to the cord being too stiff, but the symptoms are a lack of precision and a vague sluggishness when making small movements. As an easy example, trying to play Windows Minesweepers quickly is virtually impossible - the pointer just doesn't go where it's supposed to every time, or there's a very slight delay before it gets there. The Logitech mouse I just threw out (I've forgotten its number already) didn't have this problem, but its cord was softer and more flexible.

Another reviewer mentioned that the pointer sometimes moved by itself. I've noticed that as well, and that issue is definitely caused by the cord moving the mouse.

I've tried different mouse pads and surfaces with no noticeable effect, and I've messed with different sensitivity and weight combinations to no avail, so sadly the G5 is going in my box-o-bits as a backup device.

  • Hurts my hand and wrist!!!!
    By ASJZIXGRCKBHZ on 2008-03-08
I bought this mouse based on the glowing reviews on Amazon, and on several other computer review sites that gave this mouse top marks.

Well, I just plugged it in today and my wrist and hand are going numb!!! This has never happened to me in all my years of using a mouse. I am a female and have a small hand and because this mouse has a large hump in its center, its causing my wrist to bend back more and is hurting my wrist and causing my fingers to go numb. The mouse is also rough on the outside and doesn't feel good to me. I spent nearly $50 on this mouse and feel really disappointed. If you have small hands, don't buy this mouse!!!!

  • Dry-grip texture is like sandpaper. Blech!
    By A3QPZM50R95LPP on 2007-12-12
If, like me, you are sensitive to textures, find this one on display at a store and give it a try before you buy it. I find the Dry-Grip surface on the sides of the mouse to be excruciating to touch. It's the tactile equivalent of fingernails on a blackboard for me. It's a shame, because otherwise I'm pretty sure this would be the perfect mouse for me.

  • On the NEW Logitech g5
    By A1RGJO6EGL9DQ2 on 2008-07-14
How ironic that about a month ago, I eagerly awaited my G5 in the mail. It is not a bad mouse at all, there are somethings about that have searching for other options.

The mouse has the signature obtuse logitech ergonomic shape for right handers, which I can only describe as perfect, an almost custom fit (keep in mind i have tried the MSE mice and the overexpensive razer mice are probably gonnna be like the dell mouse im using atm). There is even a groove for where your thumb rests so it doesn't drag when you swipe. The second thing probably most notable about the device is the design. It is black with blue reptilesque scales, all of which screams out "nerd", however I gobble it up anyway. It still looks cool 8^*B. There are about 7 buttons in total: left click and right click, a dpi increaser and a dpi decreaser, and on the left of the mouse are 1 mouse4 button and 1mouse5 button. There is also the scrollwheel itself.

There is an adjustable weight system included in the g5. it comes with custom weights of up to I think 8, 1.7grams and 8, 4.5grams. That's certainly a cool feature for a person into customization and/or gaming edges. I also thought it would be useful for a person switching over from an old mouse to make the switch as seamless as possible. I tried them once, and took out both the weights and the weight cartridge, simply not for me. however they go right on the buttom of your mouse, so it's very inconspicious.

Now to holding it. it turns out the blue and black nerdy design is actually textured to feel as "scaley" as it looks. however, it came off as more stucco than scaley. i don't think i've ever slipped on my mouse, but i probably won't now. very neat, I thought to myself. I found myself just stroking it for at least five minutes O.O (im lonely) uh, what else is neat? the mousewheel can be tilted to the sides for horizontal scrolling (if you look closely at it, the mousewheel seems to be broken because it is slightly off center, but that's just logitech's ergonomic design which does prove itself). wow this thing just keeps getting better an better. However the scrollwheel itself is very hard to press. In addition there is a really neat dpi indicator with showed what dpi your mouse was at (the defaults are 400, 800, 2000?) I remember just spamming the - dpi button with my 518, even when i didn't need to.

On Fragging: my expectations were admitedly high. just coming off the 518 which insists on breaking on me (probably my fault) and knowing what a demon of a mouse that was, i was expecting alot out of this fancy schmancy new laser engine and updated mouse period, after all this is the NEW g5. i dunno, more headshots right? yeh, well not really. my ingame sens definetly felt higher than normal, but after finding my right sens all seemed well. It performed just as well, if not better than my 518 and that is saying alot. so i was very happy except for a couple nagging details. first of all, if i moved the mouse too fast for those sinister 180 randeags, it would freeze up and in the worst cases look up at the sky. very very annoying because I play free for all deathmatches and you need to turn for that stuff gong on. at first i thought it was because I actually lift my mouse off my pad at times when i turn, so i stopped that habit. yet, it still continued. So I actually had to adjust and learn to turn as fast I could without no breaking that threshold. so i was turning slower than normal. Not a deal breaker, yet... According to Logitech, it is because i didn't have a laser mouse pad, i was using a dark, dirty qck heavy. Laser mice usually do this on dark and/or reflective surfaces (which are good for optical mice, i believe) and the best surface for laser mice are light, non-reflective surfaces with a non uniform design. off the top of my head, i think of the steelpad 5L (as if my mouse track through the 1st layer :/). bullspit, The real answer is that laser mice can't track when moved too quickly, about 1.3 m/s on the g5 according to http://www.esreality.com/?a=longpost&id=1265679&page=17. I should mention that i use 1.2 ingame sens., 6/11 windows, and 400 dpi.

In addition, I was noticing that i had a little bit of mouse accel, as I was aiming. it's not a problem related to the mouse; it is just because I use windows vista and mousefix doesn't work. it's not a huge problem, but after i've used it for so long, i can definetly notice it affecting my aiming. at times im either overaiming or underaiming in an effort not to overaim, a bit. how happy was i to realize that the new setpoint drivers could remove it (i never used drivers with my 518). so used the drivers and started owning bitches, but whenever my drivers are on my mouse4 button would not work and i use it to talk in vent. this apperantly is another common problem. none of the fixes i have seen thus far seem promising... Aside from that, setpoint is a preety amazing software if you're not already using secondary registry editors. for instance, i can set my mouse usb polling rate and it actually stays @ 500 hz constant which didn't happen with my previous mouse. I think using 1000 hz was what kept killing my 518 though.

    the final verdict:
    - the laser tracker isn't all the hype it carries, optical is just as good, unless you actually use 2000 dpi...
    - im going back to the logitech mx518, probably the best mouse on the market. definetly the most of your money's worth.

4/5 on the G5 from me
    but the mx518 gets a 4.5/5

  • less than expected for money
    By A3QZAVW6RNEXRE on 2007-09-23
I need a mouse more stable for the pointer , i found i must put weights to make it heavy and light in diffrent sides , and i found the pointr moving by it self , it is a headach to adjust this , why they not adjut it first. also i need some light on it to see it in the dark or give a dicoration to the disc during night , will be better , the wire it self is hard but not flixable enough, it is normal not the besst in the market , i will change it in the future. Thanks

  • Great mouse but I still prefer the old MX510
    By ATED4J68G45CH on 2007-10-30
I had the old MX510 (same shape as the G5 with the 800dpi red optical tracking instead of the 2000dpi laser) for years and resisted upgrading to the G5 due to the lack of a second thumb button. So when Logitech finally put the a second button on the G5, I bought one right away. Overall, the motion does feel a bit smoother however I find that the middle mouse button (the scroll wheel button) is too imprecise and I can't always activate it without accidentally scrolling the wheel, this never happened on the MX510. The sensitivity adjustment is pretty innovative however the sensitivity buttons are a bit awkwardly placed. I would have preferred if it was more like the MX510 with one button in front and one button behind the scroll wheel instead of having both buttons placed behind.

So while I do like the mouse, it would have been perfect if they just put the laser tracking engine and sensitivity adjustments into the MX510 body.

  • Good choice for gaming
    By A1MKVPO2KWUKQJ on 2007-12-22
This is a very nice and well built mouse. As soon as you use it, you can tell that it's very well made. The new surface used on this model is very nice, non slip and does not attract fingerprints, unlike the earlier 6 button version of the G5

The option of changing the weight of the mouse seems gimmicky at first, but as soon as you start to experiment with the weights, you'll see that it's actually quite usefull.

The mouse tracks very well and the on-the-fly DPI changing works flawlessly. Also it glides very nicely which is even more emphasized when using a good mouse pad.

The reason I gave this mouse 4 instead of 5 stars is simply that the shape of the mouse will not suite every gamer. It is an awesome device for anyone using a palm or finger grip on their mouse, but someone (like me) that prefers the claw grip, mainly used in FPS games will find it a bit uncomfortable. You can get used to it though.
Also, the scroll wheel is a bit annoying. It would be better if it was a little wider and didn't have this utterly useless side scrolling function, which makes it a bit awkward to depress it.

All in all this is a great gaming mouse that is worth the money it costs. Every angle of it screams quality.
Just try and take it for a "test drive" before you buy it so you can make sure it's comfortable to you.

  • Not what I expected
    By A30BZMRKCKNBKG on 2007-08-09
Maybe I'm just too accustomed to my cheap mice, but I thought this one felt funny as soon as I started using it. If you use index and middle fingers for Mouse1 Mouse2, then I find my ring finger awkwardly placed on a ridge on the side.

Again, I'm probably just used to cheap mice, but the multiple sensitivity settings don't do a thing for me. In fact, I programmed it to only function on one sensitivity level.

Lastly, the mouse wheel itself works, but pressing it down does not register as another button (what, mouse 5?). Yes, I've got drivers installed and played with all the advanced settings I can find.

Overall, not a bad mouse, but I could live without it.

  • Incredible Mouse!!
    By AV7UZ18Y8Y7AS on 2007-10-01
Awesome for FPS games. Fast and accurate. Solid feeling, especially w/ the weights. Nice to adjust DPI on the fly too. Need to snipe? Turn it down. Spray some clone soldiers? All up. Eight programmable buttons means you can shoot, use a med, and throw a nade within milliseconds of each other. Slick feet as well. I use an aluminum mouse pad and the mouse just glides over it. You really can't go wrong with this one.

  • Disapointing uebermouse - old MS Mouse more accurate
    By A1KMJ090CMF7HE on 2008-01-01
I wanted a mouse to help improve game play on Neopets flash games, accurate and quick clicking is essential.

With all the adjustments possible with G5, it's impossible to use, even in standard programs, having to click twice to select and option, readjust on drop downs... it just doesn't click where it's supposed to.

This might be a good mouse for action software, I haven't tried that, but for the games I play this mouse is useless.

After using it for a frustrating 6 weeks, I tried MS Wheel Mouse Optical USB 3902C693 and it's simply amazing. Of course it's an obsolete mouse you can only buy used on e-bay.

  • It's all in the size & shape!
    By A21M2MYVP4DDAF on 2008-10-12
The G5 is a very nice mouse, but if it dosen't fit one's hand, that dosen't matter. My hands don't work very well & I like another reviewer found the hump in the back just didn't work for me. I was amazed that none of the various mice specification say anything about their size, so here are the results of my quest to find out how big mice are:

    V220 - 8.8 cm long
    V320 - 9.8 cm
    V450 - 10.5 cm
    L6, L7, L8, MX400, & MX Revolution - 12.3 cm
    LX7 - 12cmx 5cm x 2.5cm (long x wide x high)
    MX518-12.5 cm
    MX620 - 12.8 cm
    G5 - 12.5 cm
    G9 - 10.5 cm
    Microsoft Basic Optical Mouse - 11.2cm x 5.1cm x 4.2cm
    Microsoft Laser Mouse 6000 - 12.4cm x 6.7cm x 4.2cm
    Razer DeathAdder - 12.6cm x 6.9cm x 4.5 cm

Sorry no shape factor. I bought the DeathAdder & it also is a very nice mouse & better yet, it works for me.

  • First gaming mouse=great experience
    By A1UU91VXRHNARZ on 2007-05-09
Ok so this is my first gaming mouse so I couldnt really compare it to other gaming mouses but this thing is awesome! Very acurate and I can change the sensitivity of it just by pressing a button. it also looks pretty cool!

Anyways overall this mouse is great and Amazon.com was great with getting it to me as usual

  • Fantastic Mouse
    By A3O4GUSXD6PPR3 on 2007-07-28
This mouse is great. I bought it after having major tracking issues on my MX Revolution (another laser mouse from logitech). I can safely say this mouse has no such problems. I tried it out on my Razer eXactMat (which would cause the revolution to cut out every 10 seconds) and it was nice and smooth. I would also like to note I've noticed none of the problems other people have had on the 1 side-button version of the G5. The scroll wheel might be a little weak, but I'm not having any problems with it missing any of it's clicks.

Pros: Smooth response, 2 side buttons work well, changing the DPI on the fly is a very nice feature, adjustable weights work well but don't really do anything for me

Cons: Wheel might be a little on the weak side and pressing down to use it as a button might cause you to spin it, not quite as nice to hold as the Revolution (very similar to mice like the mx 500, 513, and 700 in this respect)

The drivers for this mouse don't really do anything I need (like let you change what each button does) so I haven't installed them, although I did use them for a while with the Revolution and they worked fine. Overall I recommend this mouse to anybody with $50 to spend on a mouse.

  • Review from a non-gamer
    By A22NRPGXFY52FH on 2007-08-12
The one that came to me from Amazon didn't work at all. No lights, no action. Logitech support was very good about getting me another one.

I bought this mouse because I loved my cordless laser, but something interferred with its signal regularly, so I went for the corded model.

The G5 is very sensitive, and the three level settings are easy to use. I like that it comes with weights. Feels good in my hand. I do miss the volume control button that was on the cordless model.

The reason I gave it four stars instead of five? The only game I play where the mouse makes a difference is a sketching game, and this mouse is terrible for that. I can't draw a curve or a circle to save my life! My 17-year-old wasn't able to, either. That's kind of disappointing. I would still buy the G5 again, though. Laser is great!

  • This is no mouse..it's a lion
    By A3PUSNZ68S0IUK on 2007-08-31
I always stood beside Logitech and this is my best purchase to date. Being an extreme gamer i needed an extreme mouse...but little did i know i was getting a lion. The large feet make gliding slick and effortless as if it knew where i wanted to go. The switching between sensitivity on-the-fly is so kool especially when i am switching between resolutions from one application or game to another. i do some photo-editing too and this 'lion' makes me seem like a surgeon. i had to fiddle with the weights at first though, just to get the balance i thought was right for me (i like it a bit on the heavy side). The 'lion' wheel was not as clicky as my former mouse (don't even know what it was) but i quickly adjusted. Side-scrolling...WOW! Unfortunately not all instances where i see the opportunity to side-scroll was i able to side-scroll...fault of the application i believe. During games like FARCRY i use the side-scroll to reload my weapon and switch from rapid fire to single. Did i mention it has forward and backward scroll that works so well when running through Windows Explorer or IE. My last mouse which was optical has an underglow that i could see from the other room and it was not necessary and a little distracting when i am watching a DVD or something like that. This 'lion' has no underglow but it moves with stealth and has killer looks. Buy one! You will like the ROAR.

  • Warning. You will hate other mice.
    By AW25XFTO0DA9X on 2007-10-24
That's pretty much the only drawback. If you have to use lots of different systems, having this at home will make you hate every other mouse by contrast. They will all feel like cheap garbage.

It's that precise, smooth, and high-quality.

  • My 2 Cents
    By A18ELSI3X0Y2B8 on 2007-11-19
The mouse is a very good and sensitive mouse because you can set the sensitivity yourself. I like how you can choose the little weights to place inside your mouse on the bottom side, which lets you customize the feel to where you are happy. If I had to do it all over again I would still buy this mouse. I use it for games that need high precision, counterstrike, to games such as warcraft 3: frozen throne. So if you are in need of a gaming mouse like I was I would definitely whole heartedly recommend this mouse. Good Gaming Everyone.

  • Great Mouse
    By A2IHEZQFMG5DHE on 2007-12-02
Great right handed mouse. Good ergonomic feel. Customizable weight. Nice USB cord.

  • Best Mouse of all time, Gaming is more fun now
    By A2RV5ZDIEX26L8 on 2007-12-07
I have had this mouse for about 2 years now. I travel with it and also play about 20 hours of gaming a week with it. THe sensitivity buttons are the best part, the software and ability to customize the mouse are a close second.

In a FPS, first Person Shooter, you need to be twitchy at times and very accurate at others... like sniping. A simple press and you get what you like.

This is a great mouse for photo editing as well, and level editing also. There are times you just need to be so accurate and when you bring this all the way to its least sensitive setting you have alot of extra control for those fine lines and movements.

The cord is very durable, and yes its stiff. This mouse should last 5 years plus under harsh conditions.

Cordless mice are still not up to par with their corded cousins... there are alot of hastles with the cordless ones. They trade one possible hastle, the cord, for new ones like interference and battery life and some others.

Great Mouse for gaming photos, and if you don't want to buy another mouse for the next 5 years.

  • Awesome mouse
    By A24TI0BR0I25FZ on 2007-12-08
I'm a power user of mice: I've had Razers (2 Boomslangs, 1 DeathAdder [that I returned]), Microsofts/Alienware (Explorer 3.0 and Alienware/MS Explorer 3.0) and several other Logitechs (MX500, 2 MX510, G7) and now this G5 (2 G5s as a matter of fact, bought the second one because my ferret ate the first one).

Nonetheless this mouse is impressive, very efficient and responsive. However in Quake 3 Arena (yes, I know is a very old game [1999] but NOTHING is as fast as that game, even nowadays [2007], not even UT3) it stalls, my character starts facing upwards all of a sudden. But this has only happened to me 2 or 3 times and I've had this mouse for almost a year.

But regardless of this issue I give this mouse 5 stars, not only it looks very cool, it also has a very cool texture, not the paint, no, the material which is made of, I like it.

One thing I would like fixed in next versions of mice from Logitech is to make the cable, the cord, not as stiff as the one on the New G5, although the material in which is wrapped is very nice, there's nothing out there that looks and feels so protected, it's still very stiff; the bents from being packed are still visible on the cord.

If you're a gamer, buy it, it's worth it.

  • great but not perfect
    By A2URYP4CV1ZFA6 on 2008-03-03
This mouse definately makes a difference in FPS games. The only complaint I have,is that it needs about two more buttons for additional functions.

  • Why not make a neutral design
    By ALDZ0WLR97N21 on 2008-09-03
Very pretty, absolutely useless if you are left handed.

I have the opposite problem of your reviewer with small hands. I can comfortably press "both" control keys with the same hand (10 1/2 inch span). So these contoured input devices give me finger cramps.

  • Great for RSI sufferers
    By A16EEQBG0EAR85 on 2008-10-12
I am a repetitive strain sufferer who works at at the computer 10+ hours a day. I've tried a ton of mice now, both optical and laser, and even tried using a Wacom Tablet for a while. This has been the one that has helped the most with pain. The profile of the mouse is low which helps to maintain a more natural hand posture. Even though the customizable weight cartridge is meant for gamers, it also works great for RSI since one can play around with the weights until they feel most comfortable. And the precision tracking means less effort trying to move the mouse to the target. Highly recommended.

  • Fantastic for Photoshop users!
    By A2T463WX091RTX on 2008-10-24
I don't play video games. I use Photoshop and other Adobe graphics products for a living. This mouse has, in addition to the usual left and right buttons and a scroll wheel, SIX other programmable keys. You can see how I use them here: [...]

  • Wonderful!
    By A27564QF5CEBHH on 2007-07-10
At first, I thought the weight cartrage was pointless, but after tinkering with different weight distributions it made the mouse feel perfect in my hands. Highly recommend this for everyone

  • Great Mouse
    By A3DFQ9T5M95FEW on 2007-07-17
I had the earlier G5 model that didn't have the forward button, which I really wanted. So I will compare to it a little as well.

I give it a 4/5 because I have nothing to compare to as well as I had an issue with it.

Pros: Weight system. Smooth movements. Software allows keystroke assignments for any button (except left and right mouse), that can switch their values based on the current program in use, i.e. a game.

Cons: Middle mouse (scroll wheel) is hard to activate without hitting the side-scrolling feature of the mouse wheel. Once you get used to pressing straight down, it's not so bad. If you use a keystroke assignment for the mouse wheel tilts, you may hit those while trying to activate middle-mouse.

Pros over older G5: Better grip on palm surface. FORWARD button! Seems to have better control on middle mouse button.

Overall is a great mouse, I can't really compare the performance of the laser system to other mice, since it's my first "gaming-grade" mouse. I use a custom grid (white w/ black grid lines) mouse pad. I haven't had any tracking problems.
