New 'Activation' requirement prevents use on some machines By AEQD902BIMPZM on 2007-10-22
The program installed fine, but in order to use it, you have to 'activate' it online (as you do with, for example, Microsoft Office and Windows). This is the first time activation has been required for Streets & Trips.
The activation process refused to function on my laptop. And despite the program's assurance that "you can use it for up to 60 days without activation," the program in fact would not run at all without activation.
I placed two calls to Microsoft Support about the issue. The first technician worked with me to reboot, uninstall, reinstall, etc., with no luck. The second technician acknowledged that there is a known issue with activation on some PC's. He suggested I could either wait for a patch (but he could not predict when one would be forthcoming), or I could get a refund.
It's a shame, because I've liked previous versions of S&T and was really looking forward to trying out the GPS features. I haven't decided whether to request a refund yet. If I keep the program and a patch is released, I will update this review accordingly.
It does work, but it's as annoying any Microsoft product By A1N17W3ONXRW72 on 2007-08-28
It is pretty amazing that you can turn your PC into a competent GPS. You can also cut and paste addresses into it.
It does not work as well as the Garmin dashboard units. If I want to find the nearest Peet's Coffee; S&T can't do it. It can show me dozens of "restaurants - other" in my area (oddly excluding what I'm looking for). If I search for Peet's it finds only 6 of the many dozens of Peets stores.
It has a category for grocery stores and for shopping centers, but not for hardware or office supply stores.
I had S&T 2006 and the GPS broke. I bought the 2008 thinking they'd have improved it. I can't see any improvement; it looks exactly the same and has the same odd little deficiencies.
My father-in-law has a great little Garmin unit. I was a fool and tried to save money getting S&T.
Not Bad By A1160IB5N03NOV on 2007-11-06
I just returned from a 6000 mile trip using the S/T 2008. I too had a little trouble with the activation as I was not near WiFi most of the time but once I got a good connections it worked.
In general it worked well. I did laugh when a huge lake in BC did not show up on one side of the road I was traveling beside. It is hard to read a lot of the small type in the car. Looking for the different colors of the minuscule blocks to see which was a restaurant and which was a bank was a problem. GPS reception can be spotty even when it appears it should be ok. On one or two occasions it did confuse left and right but the map was there to confirm.
All in all though it bailed me several times when I had know idea where I was in rural BC. It also got me through Vancouver and Seattle with no hassles. I also love being able to save my trip plans and reuse them again.
Microsoft Streets and Trips with USB By A3AARX19SSC3GW on 2007-10-28
Reading all the other comments I am confused at the negative opinions of Streets and Trips. i have been using this software for the last 6 years and each year there are better and more features. I alwasy travel with it and my laptop When on vacations with another couple that has the GPS built into their new car, they prefer that I open the laptop and use Streets and Trips as it gives more information and allows to see where we are and where we can go much better than those mini-screens that are restricted. They do not allow you to see the big picture. Microsoft Streets and Trips is extremely easy to use. I can't comprehend those who complain about it. Maybe they don't know how to read, or how to use a PC.
Not many new features in this version, but Streets & Trips product line is good By AFSWHFWXVEG3R on 2007-08-30
As far as the features are concerned, this version is not much different from the previous one. I assume the GPS and data are latest. I have the previous version of the software and disappointed to see that the new one is not much different; in that respect this version is a shame for Microsoft. If the OS is Vista, it makes sense to use the latest software.
I used other mapping systems. I like Streets & Trips because of it's simplicity and ease of use. This product is great to get a clear understanding of a place and adding information to the map. For example, adding the details like rent and distance of apartments in a neighborhood and analyzing which one is best.
Using this product as a laptop based navigation system (as a replacement of Vehicle GPS Navigator) is ineffective, unsafe and waste of time and money.
- Not worth the upgrade
     By A1X1VVK7NTBFZ8 on 2007-10-12
I bought this program to get the latest maps and updated places like hotels. It is my 4th upgrade over the years, starting back in 2003.
As far as I can tell, this version has NO IMPROVEMENTS AT ALL over my 2006 version, is more difficult to install and it tried to attach a Microsoft "live search" toolbar and default home page to my system. I live in western Pennsylvania and the new Mon-Valley expressway (PA-576) and several other new tollroads open since July of 2006 do not show up on the map! What is the purpose of buying the new version if there are no real improvements? On the plus side, the new GPS unit design may be a little easier to deal with, but if you already have T&S with GPS, don't waste your money on this version.
- Not much different
     By A3MYWOBCOSFONI on 2007-09-28
For anyone that does not have S&T with GPS it is a GREAT program. I travel to multiple clients each day and the program does a great job of mapping out the trip for me. Dropping all the client addresses into the program couldn't be easier.
I have used S&T 2006 for over a year and thought it was time to pick up the latest version. For those of you thinking of upgrading to 2008, I have found that there is not much to see here. Other than a new perspective map view, and the auto-calculate new route, the program operates and functions the same as 2006. Maybe it has more "points of interest" than 2006, but I really don't care; I'm on the road to see clients, not to find a coffee shop. If you are using 2006, or 2007, stay with what you have.
- Jury is still out on this one
     By A1UJ0AUIW8CLEW on 2007-10-18
I am a directionaly challenged Realtor, so I thought this product might help. Pros: its cheap and works relatively well once you have played around with it. GPS receiver does have some lag-time to the screen so you need to know a little about where you are going before missing turns.
I bought an inverter for extra juice to extend the battery life of the laptop and have a well lit screen. A CD player/cassette converter can put the laptop sound into your car stereo for extra loud voice directions over loud, obnoxious clients. Cons: not intuitive, a regular GPS is so much simpler.
- Great Guidance System
     By A3KUT0KMWU9IGO on 2007-10-27
Great update over prior versions. The auto-recalculate works well and recalculates quickly. The display has useful features such as time and compass. The activation system is annoying but did not present any problems.
- Microsoft Streets & Trips 2008
     By A31EVURHO6CLXR on 2007-09-23
I have considered Streets and Trips a fine program, and purchased successive annual versions. This years version however, is very disappointing in that it appears not to have improvements that would justify a full purchase price. If very minor upgrade changes are all that are to be expected in the future, an annual downloadable upgrade should be offerred at a reduced price. My 2 1/2 years old home is on local maps but still not identifiable in the latest version (2008). All I've really noticed are minor "splash" screen changes.

     By A2H0R9D0ED0FAE on 2007-09-30
The only problem I have is that no where in the instructions does it tell you how to connect the GPS to your laptop computer. The "memory stick" as I thought it was (looked like one anyway) didn't fit into anything but the computer. I read where it said you could "go Wirless" and thought that the "memory stick" was how it was done. By accedent I learned that on the OTHER end there was ALSO a cap that covered the part that connected to the GPS. I almost broke open the plastic to get to the GPS to connect it to my computer. I called Microsoft Help on the phone. They said that I ws not the first with this problem. at least 14 other folks called with the same issue. I hope this helps other in the future. JW in Ohio
- 2008 version is improved
     By A3G16JQ438WG9H on 2008-02-14
I have owned streets and trips 2005 and it is one of my favorite programs. I bought this to get updated maps and the GPS unit. The program has been improved but they removed the PDA support. Also you now have to authenticate the software when you install it. If you wanted to install this program on your laptop and desktop then you will have to buy another copy. I have to say this is disappointing because this is the type of program that you will want on both computers. Right now this is the best program for maps and GPS but I am very disappointed with the validation and lack of PDA support.
- More improvement needed
     By A2ANGJ6QYTBRPH on 2007-09-27
We recently used this software on a driving trip from Seattle, WA to Burbank, CA and were disappointed with the lists of available restaurants and hotels/motels. Many were significantly out of date. In some of the smaller cities, there was very little info. The maps portion have improved, but still not as intuitive as it could be. We had to augment our Microsoft info with maps we purchased and info from the Chambers of Commerce - the most reliable and current info.
The GPS worked fine most of the time.
- Microsoft Maps
     By A2VEXPLDR689PA on 2007-11-16
I own MS Streets & Trips 2004, 2006 and 2008 with GPS. As far as I can tell, and I have looked closely, there is no difference between the 2006 and 2008 versions. I have found, however, a number of streets on the 2004 version which were dropped from the 2006 and 2008 versions. The GPS unit works just fine with the 2004 version. Thank you again, Microsoft.
- Ever been lost? Never again!
     By A26I1PML9YALAW on 2008-02-02
I purchased the Microsoft Streets and Maps 2008 (while it was on Amazon pre-order) as my first GPS navigation system. The software is a good alternative for laptop owners when compared to the more expensive in-vehicle systems - not to mention your laptop screen is usually much larger than the built-in displays. The maps are very accurate and the GPS receiver even works in areas with tall buildings and on back roads in the mountains with tree cover. I travel around 700 miles per week and I use this on my passenger seat with a AC/DC converter for my laptop. I am very satisfied with this product. If you make a wrong turn, it detects it within seconds and gives you a course correction. If you ignore it, it will compute an alternate route. The GPS receiver has a small suction cup which doesn't work on my dashboard, but I use a small piece of Velcro instead. I also use this for Geocaching (a wonderful sport by the way) to get me close to the hide sites on back roads before debarking from my vehicle to the cache sites. I've uses this on gravel forest maintenance roads and major interstates as well. The nearby places tool is great for finding restaurants and hotels, and it provides you with a phone number so you can call for reservations while you're en route. I really enjoy this device and I can't imagine traveling without the convenience and confidence it provides. Another neat feature is to select "no interstates" for your route, then let it take you through all the small towns along the way - this works great for repetitive commutes. Last thing - if you see a bunch of traffic up ahead, it's great to have the confidence in knowing that if you jump off at any random unknown exit, the GPS and software will route you to another route and list where you can stop for lunch along the way. Great gear - thanks Microsoft!
- Great improvement from 2006
     By A32QTQMM40WRM on 2007-09-24
Great improvement from the 2006 version with the auto-recalculate and seems to be more accurate. The display has more helpful features such as time, compass, and etc. I can't wait for the day when Streets & Tips directs you through maps that look like Virtual Earth by Microsoft.
- One problem with streets and trips with GPS 2008
     By ACITY81EQA2KC on 2007-10-03
The only complaint I have is that when clicking on a major road or highway it will not show the street address. That includes roads coming into a town, so if it has a main street address it does not show the number, just the street name. When an address is not found, it helps to be able to click a road to get an idea of how close you are to your destination. I have been able to do that with past streets and trips. Other than this one complaint the product is good.
- A less expensive alternative to a GPS car unit.
     By A19GXKJ0GN2WTK on 2008-01-03
This product directed me perfectly to an area that I have not been to before. When I went off route, it recalculated the directions. When I drove too far, I got me back on track. It didn't lose signal between Bklyn, NY and Trenton, NJ (my destination). The directions are spoken clearly. The laptop was a little muffled by the car stereo, so I had to turn the music down a little to hear it. If you own a laptop, I would suggest looking into this instead of buying a more expensive car unit.
- map is not up to date
     By A2CHW222T1PZQT on 2007-09-24
the map section is old need to update the map.need to list what date the map was printed. The new printed maps are up to date.
- Program ok, GPS receiver not
     By AO6UG5ZT5WXNV on 2007-11-25
I owned S&T 2007 and enjoyed using it. I found some of the quirks of the maps a little funny/annoying, but it was still fairly accurate and usable for planning and for in car guidance. The 2008 version did have some map updates and some feature changes that were nice, but nothing major.
Cons:
- GPS receiver for 2008 didn't ever work. I used the one from my 2007 version. It may have been defective, I dunno
- Guidance does not speak the street names. It says when to turn and which way, but does not even attempt to pronounce street names.
- some instructions come way too late.
- Best GPS ever
     By A35A08P0657VUK on 2008-03-23
I have been using Microsoft S&T since 2004 and I love it. We have all kinds of other GPS devices for hiking, sailing, fishing etc. None of them are as easy to use as Microsoft's and none show the entire US so clearly. I actually stopped using my Honda and Mercedes built-in GPS units because they took so long to enter information and zoom in and out. Also, having your laptop to navigate with is much better than fitcheting with little screens. And if you ever travel in Europe, Microsoft's AutoRoute is just as good and you can continue using the satellite receiver.
Finally, if you have a laptop, there is nothing cheaper and better on the market.
- Get 2007 Edition instead
     By A3S37VI8GUM7S3 on 2008-03-28
This is no better than the 2007 Version, just adds activation scheme. I like one on my desktop and laptop, you can't do that with this version.
- good shipping, poor product...
     By A31JL6IL9W0ANP on 2007-11-21
great shipping.
But, GPS is not good... the voice instruction was confused, and direction by GPS was too late many times. my old navi on my car (2004) is much better.
- MS S&T 2008
     By A3GF0XRHCCMHT2 on 2008-04-08
Used it for a road trip with my Asus Eee PC (ASUS Eee PC 4G Surf (7" Screen, 800 MHz Intel Celeron Processor, 512 MB RAM, 4 GB Hard Drive, Linux Preloaded) Galaxy Black) and a power inverter - worked very well and I wouldn't have made it home otherwise! Planning a route an executing it using this software are two very different things, however; I abandoned the voice-guided directs early on and used it more as just a map. Excellent tool.
*Eee users note: I used EeeCTL software to overclock up to 900MHz. While 900 isn't required (stock worked well enough) I much preferred the higher setting while not on battery power. If it wasn't obvious, this was all while running XP.
- Good News - Bad News
     By A1Y6F1V5Q9B1EM on 2008-04-18
Good News - Excellant product. Bad News - However if you have to reinstall on your PC (rebuild PC, hard disk crash, etc.) you can if you've used up your 2 installations. Have to contact Microsoft technical support, convince them you are reinstalling, not an additional install, and they walk you through given them LOTS of number and they have you enter LOTS of number to get it activated.
- Not that good!
     By A3L46N7GP8S8DT on 2008-04-05
When in the city, it will be a little to slow to provide anticipation for turns... Slow to redirect you to the correct address... sometimes it gets disconnected for no good reason... in the countryside it works well.
- Good product
     By A2MSJPA1ZJTA0B on 2008-04-20
Product as was described. Very happy with results and its pretty up to date. I live in Tucson AZ so with new housing and roads things are always changing. I would recommend this product.
- Couldn't get it to load...
     By A3JVJ2IPQ8LLEY on 2008-05-15
I had great hopes for this product, however I couldn't get it to load on my XP OS Laptop. I am not computer illiterate however I didn't want to invest the time in a product with no visible support mechanism, so back it went.
- Very Usefull
     By A3OMXO2ANHIQH4 on 2007-11-15
I have S&T 2005, I think it's a good product with accurate information so 2008 S&T should be better. I tried the new 2008 GPS with 2005 S&T, it works fine, even indoors using the GPS not the wifi locator! which is a surprise!
- streets & maps 2007
     By A3QCIWD61SKVTU on 2008-01-08
NOT as good as 2003 edition. Campgrounds are not in it. Cannot use GPS for finding a co-ordinate. Old edition better. Pretty much works the same without as many sites of interest and addresses show in wrong place.
WOULDN'T RECOMMEND IT!
