Perfect gentle escapism By A3TE99IW8RAI80 on 2007-08-29
I'm a big fan of Miyazaki movies. This series could be easily mistaken for something of his. I rented this series for my wife, who is a fan of less frivolous anime, and I had no intention of paying much attention to it, but I was sucked in by the end of the first episode and couldn't wait to see the rest of it.
Gorgeous painted backgrounds worthy of Miyazaki films. Very gentle and rich storytelling. Beautiful soundtrack... and, I bought the soundtrack... for my wife... and every time I hear it, I just have to relax and smile.
Yeah. it's that good.
Now, I have my own collection of anime at home. I'm all into that "guy" anime with robots, big guns, ninjas, tentacles (you know what I'm talking about if you've seen one of THESE movies) blood and monsters, but I gotta tell you...
I love Kamichu. I can't wait to get this collection... for my wife.
Whimsical and touching By A2SY92ZXU2FOEU on 2007-09-04
I bought Kamichu! Vol 1 along with Elemental Gelade Vol 1 because they were on sale. I don't really know what I was thinking when I bought it since it wasn't the type of series that I would normally buy.
Almost 6 months later and with all 4 dvds on my anime shelf, it is now one of my top 10 favorite anime series that never fails to charm me or make me smile when I watch it.
I've seen a few comparisons of this modest series to Miyazaki's "Spirited Away" but it may be closer in tone and spirit to Miyazaki's "Kiki's Delivery Service" in the matter of fact way that Yurie, a 2nd year middle schooler, deals with becoming a god and all the other challenges of a middle schooler.
In fact, I'd call this series a slice of life with a bit of fantasy, a heavy dose of friendship, and truly endearing romance thrown in for good measure.
A plus to the series is that while each character has a distinctive personality, none are annoying.
The character designs are simple and surprisingly (and thankfully) appropriate for their ages. The backgrounds, especially Yurie's hometown, are beautifully depicted. The musical score is a perfect fit to the series.
If one is expecting a magical girl adventure with young teen girls in super short skirts, one might want to look elsewhere.
But if one is looking for something a little different that doesn't shy away from unabashed sentimentality and charming storytelling, then Kamichu! is something worth looking into.
I am glad I did.
Charming and fun! By A2VQH9ATZIKZUW on 2007-12-02
This was a surprise as you swear you are watching something that the great Hayao Miyazaki did, but this isn't anything from Studio Ghibli.
If you like Spirited Away, or My Neighbor Totoro, you will love Kamichu!
