  • Great affordable 8GB SDHC card

    By A1B4MIXYVIKMU2 on 2008-03-29
I recently bought this 8GB SDHC card for my Canon SD1000 camera. The card works very well and I've had no problems with it so far. If you're in the market for an affordable high quality SDHC card, this may be the one for you. Sorry, I kind of sounded like a used car salesman right there, didn't I? I assure you that I don't work for Transcend. But, here's why I think this card is awesome:

    Pros:

    -Affordable!

    -Large 8GB capacity

-Class 6 read/write speed (which is the fastest speed currently available)

-Lifetime warranty (at least that's what the package says :)

-Transcend is a reputable company that's been making memory products for a very long time. ( I swear to the tech Gods that I don't work for them!)

    Cons:

    - I can't think of any right now. The closest thing to a "Con" that I can think of is that if you buy this card now, it will probably become cheaper in a month or so :) No, make that 2 weeks.

IMPORTANT SPECIAL NOTES ABOUT SDHC MEMORY CARDS:

-SDHC cards are not compatible with most older SD cameras, SD devices, or SD card readers.

-SDHC cards are rated by speed using different "classes". There are currently three data transfer speed classes available for SDHC cards. These classes are "class 2, class 4, and class 6". For example, "Class 2" would have the slowest read/write speed while "Class 6" has the fastest read/write speed. So if you have a device in which speed may play a crucial role, make sure you buy a higher "class" SDHC card. Again, this SDHC card has the fastest read/write speed available right now. Class 6 has a minimum read/write speed of 6mb/sec... while Class 2 has minimum speed rating of 2mb/sec, and Class 4 is 4mb/sec. Starting to see the pattern?

SO WHAT'S THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN "SD CARDS" AND "SDHC CARDS?

SDHC is basically an upgrade to the older SD cards. The reason they upgraded it was to achieve greater data transfer speeds AND capacity than previously possible with normal SD cards... and to do this, they had to redesign the card (which is why it's not compatible with normal SD devices). This was necessary because digital cameras and digital video cameras these days have higher resolutions, which equate to larger file sizes and faster data transfer needs.

I hope I haven't confused everybody by going into this much detail, but I can't help being the nerd that I am. If you are confused, don't hesitate to comment on this post and I will try my best to answer your questions. Also, any feedback is always welcome!

Conclusion: Buy the card if you have a new device that uses SDHC. It rocks! (This message has been approved by the "Duke of New Mexico")

  • Huge capacity and excellent value

    By A1PA6CIPU9AAD5 on 2007-07-05
I wanted to take advantage of the video capability on the Canon SD800IS digital camera and required a large memory card. Given the way memory requirements increase over time I opted for the largest available. I also wanted a fast memory write speed. The Transcend 8Gb SDHC Class 6 card was the best value available.
So far this card has worked flawlessly.

  • Excellent Mini Hard Drive equivalent

    By A2H4BLBXDNSZ2O on 2007-12-12
This card is able to hold a complete DVD movie, thousands of songs/photos, or just serve as a backup device for one's files.

It operates very well - I now have purchased 3 and with each use its value becomes more apparent.

One word of caution - even though most laptops and systems have an SD card slot, older computers may not be able to recognize or write to this card. Make sure your system has the ability to read SDHC configured products.

If you do not have an SD slot you can purchase an tiny SD reader (very inexpensive) that plugs into your USB port.

  • A piece of expensive plastic,

    By A39PV37F8ZF6PD on 2008-06-01
On the last day of my trip to Costa Rica I clicked the shutter on a Canon G9 and it beeped several times at me. I tried again, same response. I checked screen and it read "Card Locked". Back in the car I tried everything from setting and unsetting the little lock tab to a new battery. I couldn't display any of the 100 +/- photos taken, shoot anymore, or even access functions like "format".

Back home neither of our computers recognize it as a device, and my wife's camera simply says "no memory card" when I try it there.

All photos are lost and I am returning this "dead piece of plastic" tomorrow. I would love to see some statistics on how often this happens and if any brand is more reliable. Trip was great otherwise.

  • My Canon loves the 8 GB SDHC card

    By AMDM74IDK3RRU on 2008-01-16
I recently purchased a Canon Powershot A720IS digital camera that is capable of recognizing and using up to 2 TERRABYTES of memory card (in the future) so I wanted to get the largest memory card I could install for now. I wanted to use the camera both on dry land and with an underwater housing for shooting stills and video on dive trips. Camera specs said an 8 GB SDHC card would record one hour of hi res video at 30 fps. Or nearly 2300 hi res stills at 8 megapixels.

A test of the Transcend 8GB SDHC card in the camera ended up shooting 70 minutes of full screen, 30fps digital video that could not be distinguished from my DV camcorder video quality. Playback from the memory card to the TV was so fast & efficient there was never a single "stutter" on the screen. The card speed is genuinely FAST as advertised. Low level formatting of the card allowed for very acceptable rapid-fire sequential still photo shooting speeds when light levels were bright enough that the flash was not needed/used. Something like 2 photos every 3 seconds. Files were flawless in display, both for stills and video.

This product was significantly lower in price than the Kingston 8GB SDHC card I originally bought with the camera. I've used both interchangeably and cannot see any different in the speed or capacity and quality of imagery is identical. For the money I'll stick with Transcend and am looking forward to getting their 16GB card once the price drops substantially below the $100 mark. That would provide nearly 2 1/2 hours of video on my still camera or 4600 highest quality stills. I'm afraid my camcorder will be collecting dust much of the time. A big advantage to video on the card is there are NO MOVING PARTS, e.g. a mini DV tape cassette and camcorder or VCR playback unit needed to dump the video and stills to my Mac for editing and burning DVDs. I just stick the card in the MicroMate USB card reader, plug it in the computer and bingo, ready to sort thru and dump to the hard drive. Since the card is formatted by a Canon camera it automatically boots up the Canon Viewer software too. That should work the same for other brands of still cameras formatting this chip.

  • Super fast, works great with Canon TX1
    By A2TFNZRS37FPWK on 2007-08-28
I was worried about getting a fast card for my Canon TX1 to save video at (the manual says it needs 20 mb/s transfer rate to do full resolution video). It certainly keeps up with my camera, no problem whatsoever.

  • works great in a D-80
    By A2R3MEHOD2FQ8Q on 2007-07-12
I bought this card to use in my Nikon D-80 . This is one of the best SDHC
cards when it comes to taking multiple 9 meg raw pics. I found the limits of many other recommended cards but not this one.

  • Used in Treo 700p and in USB Card Reader
    By A1T4JJSGDYN074 on 2007-11-14
This 8GB SDHC is my second Transcend SD card. My first was an 1GB SD.

After having used some real slowpoke doozies in my Treos (namely Ritek, PNY, and "generic" cards of capacities between 1-4GB), I would rate these as good or better than SanDisk Ultra II's for quality and speed. The 1GB 120x Transcend SD card seemed almost as fast, but this Class 6 SDHC card is the fastest SD card I've ever owned. Saving 300k photos is almost instant and so is switching between apps and email stored on the card.

Note, though, if using on the Palm OS - it will show only 4GB available; however, once you fill up the first 4GB, it will then show the actual remaining capacity. It does not affect the amount (7.5GB) of usable space, though. This is a quirk of the PalmOS rather than the card. Using an SD-to-USB adaptor, the capacity shows correctly.

I can't wait to get my hands on the 16GB version from Transcend (and later the 32GB version) at a reasonable price (i.e., when they fall under $100).

  • Stay away. Product defective !!!
    By AA0NI0NBB27CN on 2007-12-25
I tried this card with my Canon S5. Only after several minutes it started to show writing errors. I also bought Kingston 8GB SDHC and it is working like a charm after several days on Tahoe in very cold weather.

  • This is a great product.....
    By A2FNI54SC8NGEX on 2007-07-26
I'm using this card in a Canon Powershot A550. It works every bit as good as it claims to. The 8 gigs of storage is especially good because I shoot a lot of videoclips with the camera as well as taking pics. I needed a card that could hold a lot of data. Also the card runs really fast.

  • 8 GB Transend SDHC memory card--very pleased
    By A2VVLQW0RDMSLU on 2007-11-10
Worked 1st time in Canon SD950 IS Powershot camera. Great capacity (9,999+ pictures at snapshot resolution--over 1,400 at highest resolution--at 12.1 mega pixels). However, had to verify (800 # telephone call to Canon) that the camera supported high capacity SD memory cards, which was not readily apparent on the camera owner's manual. Very pleased with the performance.

  • Does not work with Panasonic TZ1 camera
    By A2G31BUNV2GD70 on 2008-01-18
I bought one for my Panasonic TZ1 camera, but the camera does not recognize the card. Going to return it.

The TZ1 manual says it accepts 8GB SDHC card.

    4/6/2008:
I like to revise my review. The card works on a Casio EX-V8. So it was not the card's problem, but the Panasonic TZ1's problem.

I want to give it a 5 star, but have no way to change it.

  • Great Value
    By A2QNY1RXNIBBJ7 on 2007-12-07
Got this on amazon for my Canon tx-1. The extra space allows for approx. 50min of high def video without having to worry about switching cards. Card works as expected, and considering I almost bought a similar card at Best Buy for $149, you can't beat the price!

  • a shame
    By A1V7FMGIPCJ1L3 on 2008-02-18
I bought this for my Digital Camera thinking that this would be a good SDHC card and more than capable write speed. I formatting it, and took it onto vacation to Spain (I figured one 8 gig card would be enough for pics of the fam, ocean, etc). It didn't last two days before I got an error and had to reformat (it deleted the handful of clips I had on it). It was annoying, but I thought it may have been a fluke.

About half way through my vaction IT HAPPENED AGAIN. reformatted the card, and everything went back to normal. But! when I checked the video clips on my PC when I got back, I noticed that the video clips would "stutter" as if hung up on something. All my other memory cards (several 2 gigs) have never had a problem like that. So basically, most of my clips were unwatchable/useable. Ive learned since, that this is due to the write speed (thats why people buy faster SD cards, especially for high capacity cards). If I had to do it again, I would have gotten a 6.0 speed SDHC card, or just several 2 gig SD cards.

  • Card Locked error so no holiday snaps.
    By A2B6LR4IRRPYXF on 2008-06-17
When transferring my holiday pictures to my Vista PC the process hung up, then the PC re-booted (only after I removed the card and allowed some recovery routine to run). Upon re-boot the card was unreadable on the PC, it simply did not see it. I replaced it in the camera and got "Card Locked" even though the locked tab was not in the locked position. Not too impressed with this at all. I've only had the card 2 months, it was really nice when it worked, fast transfers were great. Not sure what caused the problem, ie PC or card, but I've lost some nice wilderness shots/footage.

    ******************* some time later**********************************

I returned the card to Transcend and they quickly sent a replacement card, along with an apology and a $5 coupon for their online store. They do seem committed to customer satisfaction which is nice. Shame about the lost data though. I'd rate the card higher now if I could.

  • Don't Let This Happen to You.....
    By A2U94ONFLR4S27 on 2008-08-03
It's great to have 8GB of memory but it is a double edged sword. Today after using this card for only the second time, it failed on me. I lost almost 200 precious images - gone forever. I am what you would call an enthusiast or hobbyist. I love photography and spend every spare minute, which is very seldom these days, pursuing my passion. So I do a fair amount of experimentation. These cards are great when they work - but if they fail you even once - the results can be catastrophic. Maybe I am the unlucky 1 of 250 reviewers with a bad experience with this product, but I feel it is my responsibility to report this to everyone. I hope it never happens to you. It is human nature for me to wonder, if I had spent a few more dollars for a better brand name, would my photos be intact today?

  • Asus Eee 4G Surf
    By A3J2UO9611K5PR on 2008-02-03
Out of the box and right into my new laptop (Asus Eee 4g Surf) and it worked fine. It is 8G but only 7.6G is available to me. My desktop and other laptop weren't able to read the card. Maybe due to its size? Regardless of that, this is excellent!

  • This Product does work in Eee XP environment.
    By A23Y8LBH2LU85O on 2008-03-17
I was able to get a download hotfix from MS that corrected the XP problem with recognizing the Transcend 8G SDHC card and it is now working just fine in my XP based Eee. I'm a happy guy. The issue all along was not the Transcend card but XP support for any SDHC larger than 4G. Now I can't change the number of stars for this product or publish a new review. I will give it 5 stars.

  • Great add-on for Asus Eee PC
    By A2IZHRRODEOE70 on 2008-01-28
Just pop it in the slot, you've just
more than doubled your drive space on
the little Asus Eee PC. Great deal!
Works with the computer, without hassel.

  • Transcends my Kindle to a walking bookstore!
    By A3775OP5VTX5ON on 2008-03-01
I bought this particular card specifically for my new Amazon Kindle. Even though the K instructions say to use SD memory cards up to 4GB, Kindle Forum users suggested 8 GB and, if you want to walk around with the equivalent of a Barnes and Noble Superstore in your beach bag, some install 16 GB. You know how some people are--always pushing things to new limits of overkill, like the church-going granny driving alone in a Chevy Suburban 4x4.

I hear all SD cards are not the same (even though they look the same to me), but I bought this Transcend card (because the blue color was mighty fetching) on a One-Click and a prayer. When it arrived, I popped it into the K and, bingo, recognized! It says 7.5 GB storage remaining, so the other 1/2 GB is lost to operational memory, sort of like my own brain after that weekend on Key West, living on frozen mango beverages, when I brain farted and lost the words to "Margartitaville" by the third plastic cup--but I'll save that tale for our next Kindle-side chat, friends.

Anyhoo, the thing works for me (and don't you cringe when people write "anyhoo"). I'm a technological piss-kid, so I have zero idea if this card is "fast as Mazola on a summer hog" or "slow as Valerie Bertinelli wolfing Jenny Craig peanut butter".

"Alls I know is that it works real swell in a Kindle, right Spanky?", said Alfalfa, an early Kindle adopter.

I agree, Cowlick. Enjoy the Kindle!

  • Mine was defective

Mine failed within days.. gave "write error" messages on all three cameras I tried it in, and could not be formatted

    Annoying

  • Transcend SDHC 8GB memory card works fine
    By A1HFEZVF8QASH0 on 2007-09-10
Just purchased and tested the Transcend SDHC 8GB memory card in a Sanyo Xacti camcorder and in a Nikon D80. The chip worked fine in both.

Don't forget to format your new chip in the device. Only takes a second.

  • Thios is my 3rd one
    By A317L56T9Q55C2 on 2008-08-21
This my 3rd 16 gid card that I have bought by Transend. Is this tell you something about the card? It should! It is the best bang for the buck for
    16 gig high startage cards.

  • Excelent Memory Card for the price you pay
    By A2BSDSFH0CG7S6 on 2007-12-27
I already bought this 8GB SD card and is working very fast. I tested in my Nikon D80 and have more than 2300 shots available. I also own a 2Gb Transcend 150x SD memory card. This brand is emerging with high quality products.

This is the lowest price I found for a memory card of this category. I also heard very good comments from other friends who have this product in their Nikons.

  • Stopped Working <2 Hours After 1st Use w/ Canon Vixia HF100
    By A19ZVMO15XA00R on 2008-07-16
This card was to be used in my Canon Vixia HF100 camcorder and Canon SD800 still camera. After its 1st use it has developed a corrupt file system. I'm not able to format it, as the file system is only recognized as RAW at this point. Sometimes the Windows command prompt function "CHKDSK /R" will fix problems with a bad index or file corruptions (accessed via Start --> Run --> cmd), but I can't even get that far.

My A-DATA 16GB SDHC C-6 has worked beautifully for >1 month and is less costly (per GB, of course!) & faster than this model (using the Vixia HF100 and SD800 camera).

Given others' ratings, I must acknowledge that my experience is likely the result of some fairly rare production anomaly...I suppose even more reason to document it...

I'm pursuing support options now & will report from that vantage point next. I will update this review and/or associated * rating with any change(s), as warranted.

  • Works very well with my Sanyo HD1000 camcorder
    By AUJH8T7F95S2W on 2008-02-16
Since I'm using this card with a camcorder, this review centers around how well it fares with regard to video-making.

At 13Mpbs bitrate (MPEG-4 H.264/AVC), this card can hold 1 hour 24 minutes video. It's much more expensive than a MiniDV tape, but it transfers to a computer faster than real-time. According to SDHC Class 6 spec (6MBytes/s), that is approximately 3.6x. Using SanDisk MobileMate SD+ reader, I could get 20MBytes/s for reading, which is about 12x real-time.

Unfortunately, since the camcorder uses FAT32 filesystem to store data on the memory card, it can only record up to 4GB per video, so continuous shooting can only run up to 42 minutes.

Unlike MiniDV, memory cards like this one have no magnetic or mechanical problems, and it's pretty reliable. Since there is no mechanical parts, it's possible to operate camera in complete silence. The memory card's non-linear access capability also makes it easy to sort and browse through video footage.

I have two of these cards: one of which I've used since November 2007, with the other one I bought a month later. I've been using both of them without a problem.

  • Beware of defective cars
    By A1B3UPBHHS00O on 2008-05-17
I just got this card recently after seeing the good reviews. After a couple days of use, the card starting giving me a write error. I plan to return it. I should have bought a brand name card in the first place.

  • great memory
    By AKAKPVMC4J602 on 2007-09-30
The Memory card is of excellant quality and performs very well. 8gb of space is more than enough for me, but I dont want to ever run out of space while taking pictures.

  • Works great
    By A1C5YC4CY33Y1T on 2008-01-23
Great capacity at a great price. Just be sure your device supports high capacity SD cards (SDHC).

  • Great value! Works fine and inexpensive.
    By ADK9HIKA42DG5 on 2008-02-01
I ordered teo of these from Cameta based on the low price (which is sadly even lower now). They arrived in decent time, and work like a charm on my Nokia N800 tablet - it now has 16G of storage at an amazingly low price.

The cards perform well, and I have yet to have an error. If you want a ton of flash storage and don't want to pay through the nose, I recommend this product.
