Barbie Closet
Create a look that’s all your own -- from hair, eyes, and skin tone to clothing, accessories, and makeup.

The Barbie Girl device is basically an MP3 player with attitude. First, it offers a range of customizable fashions and accessories, delivering the next generation of fashion doll play. Second, it is a music device with 512 MB of on-board memory (able to hold about 120 MP3 or 240 WMA-file songs). Third, the Barbie Girl device acts as a "key" for girls who have a room on barbiegirls.com. Girls who have this device and who have physically connected them into one another’s computer docking stations can become "best friends" and chat in "secret." It adds a more personal touch to the site experience and an extra layer of safety for parents. The device comes with a secret code, as well, that once entered on the site can allow its user to unlock additional pets, games, hangouts, fashions, and more. To get additional secret codes, girls will have to buy more Barbie accessories, hunt them down on the Internet, or possibly ask their new online friends.

Barbie Girl Gold comes with two hairstyles, two faces, two tops, a skirt, a pair of pants, boots, and wedges that can be interchanged to match the owner’s current mood and style. The tech gadget also includes adjustable earbuds, a belt clip, and a durable storage case so it’s easy to take everywhere. Extra packs of fashions, pets, and accessories are sold separately and offer the ability for girls to make their Barbie Girl as unique as themselves.

Barbie Games
Dazzling Nails is one of three games you can play online to earn B bucks.

The online world of Barbie Girls offers plenty of time killing fun and lets girls earn more B bucks to spend on virtual accessories. There are three games that can be played over and over, each one taking about 5 minutes to complete and rewarding players with 10 B bucks. Dazzling Nails lets you paint and decorate a set of nails (you can even select rings to go on the hand’s fingers), and then allows you to print out the design so you can wear the nails, too. Mix a Music Video lets you choose one of five songs then add in an animated background, icon, and character to create a unique music video. Give Ken a New Look lets you makeover Barbie’s boyfriend so she’ll notice him again. There are plenty of outfits, cars, careers, and more to choose from for his new style.

Barbie Map
Barbie’s world is chock full of places to visit and things to do.

Also online is a small town filled with things for your Barbie Girl to do. There are boutiques, a pet store, and a furniture store to shop in. There’s a salon for beauty tips and a café for a quick jolt of caffeine. There’s even a movie theater where you can see trailers for upcoming movies -- and earn 20 B bucks for every one you watch. Or you can just stroll around the park and see what other Barbie Girls are up to. Whether it’s an introduction to online communities or old hat to your 9-year-old, the Barbie Girls world is a friendly, fun, and safe place for girls to spend time.

Customer Reviews

  • Great multiple use mp3 and gaming device for the "tween" set

    By A23A49GSXXNZKK on 2007-09-10
I read the reviews on this site (and several others) before I cautiously purchased this item for my 9 yr old daughter's birthday. I even saved my reciept, anticipating a quick return to the store. I must say I am VERY impressed with this toy. The software was easy to install. I had over 50 songs in the device (without buying a memory card) and my daughter was playing on the Barbie Girls website in less than an hour. The mp3 player uses Windows Media Player and the installation CD basically walked you through music transfer. It is not compatable with iTunes, but any mp3 files transferred with no problems. The controls on the device are similar to an iPod shuffle - but, I like the elongated, "remote control" looking shape better for her age - it will be easier to find the first time it is lost in the couch! My daughter loves the Barbie Girls website - it is similar to Webkinz with games, clothing, room design, etc. There is a chat feature on this site and parents are able to control the amount of privacy. She has still not been through the entire website - there is a lot for a girl to do. Where else can you get a computer game, an mp3 player, and a dress up "doll" for around fifty dollars? I thought the price was very fair.

  • PERFECT! My daughter loves it!!

    By AE141JXD6YWQ6 on 2007-07-31
My daughter just turned 5 and she got this for her birthday. She LOVES it! It was easy to set up and transfer music (instructions were helpful and easy to read). Very easy to turn up/down volume and switch back and forth to different songs. She always liked to use my iPod, but it was too difficult for her. This Barbie Girls MP3 player is going to be a hit with many, many girls! My daughter is still alittle young to go online to the Barbie Girls website, but older girls will love that too!

  • Good First MP3 Player for young girls

    By A29JSIPYV23SIZ on 2007-11-10
I bought this for my daugter's 8th birthday. She loves it because she gets her first MP3 player. As far as I can tell you can't download music from the internet, but we were able to download her CD's and she takes her Barbie Girl everywhere. The internet site is great for her age and very safe so far. She enjoys all the features and we haven't figured it all out, but for ages 8-12 I would say this is a great toy and for the price you do get a good deal.

  • My daughter receieved this for her 6th birthday..

    By A67CFWXOE1I5C on 2007-10-04
My daughter received this for her 6th birthday. She LOVES it! I love it since I'm finally able to get my iPod back from her!

My only two complaints - the software is not Mac compatible and the sound is a bit low. My daughter wears hearing aides, and the highest volume is a little low for her (she doesn't wear her hearing aides while using the headphones, of course). The highest volume is a good, moderate setting though for non-hearing impaired users (not too loud).

  • Barbie MP3 Player

    By A1T6NBNBJFBOS5 on 2007-10-20
I bought this Barbie MP3 Player for my daughter's 7th birthday and she absolutely loves it! She now has all of the music she loves at the press of a button. We recently made a road trip and this kept her entertained throughout. She is definitely more into the music than the website though.

  • Security key for subscription
    By A17TL2DBE63G1F on 2007-10-26
My daughter had to have it , she paid for it with her own money.
She bought this just so she could access the website, no other reason.
Maybe a good backup if you can't find you ipod.
The site was still in beta when she got it, could not get in, several tears later after a call to Mattel and a week later (site problem) she was on. Mattel was great, they actually answered the phone.
It works, has snap on skins, my 11 year old seemed to enjoy the website.
Looking over her shoulder the site seemed to have a lot to offer and take kid safety seriously. This device gives you priority access over the free users.

  • Software doesn't work, can't get online
    By A32G4AR56VP4YN on 2007-12-26
Despite my misgivings base on other reviews I bought this for my daughter for Christmas. It was at the top of her list, largely because of the Barbie.com site and the promised secret codes included with this item. Frankly I am appalled at what is essentially blackmail, but one cannot explain that to a 9 year old. Anyway...I cannot get the software to work. I loaded it on the computer and it keeps telling me "application failed." I am not a computer idiot and my system more than meets the hardware requirements. I was able to load music on the player via Windows Media Player, but I have a VERY UNHAPPY little girl. While the player seems worth the $20 I paid, it would be a utter rip-off at the original $80 price. Message for Mattel - This is the last time I buy anything from you...and now my little girl concurs!

  • Very happy with Barbie Girls MP3 Player
    By AEB2H6CX8F1Z on 2008-01-09
Both my daughters wanted this item & I refused to pay the original price tag. When the price went down, I immediately jumped at buying it. I gave it to my 6 & 10 year old for Christmas & they love it. They had been playing on Barbie girls website for awhile & were not having any fun not being able to do all the things available. Now they love the site & play on it all the time. There favorite is having a pet & doing the makeovers :)

As for the MP3 player it is very nice. The software is easy to install & it was easy getting songs uploaded to it. I was able to put all the songs they wanted on it & they still have room. My oldest uses the clip & clips it right to her jeans, it has been holding up well so far. It seems like a nice durable product!

  • Good product, fun site
    By AAYW2KYS20PR7 on 2007-12-26
The main appeal of this toy was the fact that it is an MP3 player and my daughter is a music-lover (Bratz music is her favorite, ironically). I introduced my 8-year-old (soon to be nine, which is, I think, the targeted age here) to the barbiegirls.com website a few days before Christmas to heighten her interest in the toy's web benefits. The site is like Second Life-lite for nine-year-old girls - and as Mattel was smart enough to make a good deal of it free to access (unlike Be-Bratz, which my daughter also received for Christmas), you can register there before even buying the toy in order to get an idea of how it functions. It really needs more games, but my daughter has fun chatting, sending and receiving e-mails, and visiting other girls' rooms (chatting and e-mail consists of sending pre-written messages with an exception made for girls who know each other personally and can access each others computers - a feature my daughter hasn't used yet). The toy itself is a good size for a child (not small enough to be easily lost), the volume is loud enough but doesn't blast (which is a good thing), and it has a fun fashion changing feature. The software worked perfectly with my system (PC, Windows Vista) and it was easy to both register online, giving her full access to the site, and download songs. My only complaint was that one earbud didn't work, however, customer service was friendly and responsive, and assured me a new set was on the way. Overall, this gift was a winner.

  • Barbie Girl MP3 software a failure
    By A2QZHD66WT5UMW on 2007-12-29
I am having the same problems getting the Barbie Girl MP3 software to function properly and work as advertised. I have no problem loading music on it. But trying to get the website registration software to work has been an absolute failure. It is a huge disappointment as a child's Christmas present. Its main function is supposed to be as a key code to unlock Barbie Girl website special features. Tech support for Mattel just hangs up on you because they are "experiencing a high volume of calls" all week and weekend. I bet they are. Amazon just referred me to another number, apparently for Broderbund software support, and they are closed on the weekend!

I, too, am no computer idiot and my computer meets the specs. This is absolutely not worth any amount of money with these glitches and no tech support. This is all my daughter wanted for Christmas. What a mess.

  • mac access-able workaround?
    By A2DVGB7YVMILLT on 2007-11-24
This sounds great. I was wondering what do do about having a macintosh computer.
If I sign up my daughter on a pc with the usb thingy, will this be enough to allow her to access all the fun at home on the mac?
IE: is having her login and password enough after she registers? Or is this something where she needs to continually use the USb cradle to access the site?
    P

Also, it says there registration is good for one year, what happens after that? another 60 bucks? AUGH!

  • Good starter mp3 player for very young girls
    By ALL1SHY7WFCZE on 2008-03-01
My 8 year old daughter got this for Christmas. If you get one of these, don't pay more than $20 for it. As with most others she wanted it for the extra online stuff (a few extra items kids can "buy" with the B-bucks they earn playing games and "movies" on the site.), which is only good for a year from the time of registration. She has already lost the snap on pieces and the bottom of the player, and the buttons stick and skip over songs. On the positive side: it is very easy to get music onto it. It also has a clip on it so she clips it to a belt loop so she doesn't lose it or drop it. The earbuds it comes with have 3 different size "covers" so they will fit pretty much anyones ears.

  • 6 Months after Christmas and it still gets the most use!
    By A1W8U01K49QYAY on 2008-06-04
The Barbie Girls MP3 player is a great way to introduce small children to electronics. I purchased two of these for a 5 year old and a 6 year old, and they both LOVE them.

Some of the complaints here I think are directed at an older audience, such as the volume being low. As a parent, I'm GLAD the volume is low because I don't want my kids cranking up the tunes too loud anyway. It's true that you can't see what song is coming up next, but really, my 5 and 6 year old don't care.

Plus, 6 months after Christmas, when most of the toys are broken or forgotten, these MP3 players are still in constant rotation. This was the best buy this past holiday season

  • Good MP3 for a Decent Price
    By AG8E2F0G98ZTB on 2008-08-26
The Barbie Girl MP3 player is a good starter MP3 player. Sound quality is good and songs are easy to load into the player. The headphones are 'adjustable' with three different size earbuds you can switch out as you please. In my opinion, the earbuds are more comfortable than others out there.

The downside of the player is that the songs do not shuffle, so if you get tired of your songs playing in the same order, you'll have to get used to changing the names on your own and manually shuffling them.

The neatest part of the Barbie Girl player is the ability to change her look whenever you like! Sets are sold separately, but I recommend picking one or two up so she matches the mood you're in when listening to the music!

A note-- she works fine on my IMac, though the instructions say she is not compatible. Songs upload just as they would for a thumbdrive.

Overall, I love my Barbie Girl and think it's a good MP3 player for those girls who aren't ready for an expensive name brand MP3 player and don't mind the slight shuffling drawback. Enjoy the music!

  • Bad quality material, way too expensive considering what you've got
    By A3AHQZPFHGOSAQ on 2007-08-22
I am not satisfied with this toy in any way. It looks cheap, it doesn't show the playing song, there is no way of knowing what song is next. The sound is low. It is very expensive considering what you've got and 512Mb is way too little for the price. I purchase a 2gb minisd memory and the mp3 player won't work if the memory is inserted, so there is no way of using more than 512mb. I only purchased it because my daugther wanted so badly to use all the features on the barbie site but I don't think is worth the price.

  • Good idea but poor quality
    By A3GSKW6CJ1XGJT on 2007-11-25
I bought this for my 9 year-old daughter who was mainly interested in unlocking all the features you get on Barbiegirl.com when you purchase this product. We've had it about a week and the headphones are broken (poor wiring connection in the plug makes the sound go in and out). A co-worker of mine is on his third as the first two had problems with the player itself. Also, the instructions are not great so it takes some trial and error to get it right (for instance, the CD you need to install is "hidden" in the base). Now, that's my perspective. My daughter still likes it and enjoys the expanded features on barbiegirl.com so she is more forgiving than I am.

  • Cute 1st MP3 Player
    By A28R0E6B6FQJMQ on 2007-12-19
This flash drive based MP3 player is cute and should be fun for its target audience. We have not tried the web site, and if you already have Windows Media Player 11 on your PC, there is no reason to install it from the enclosed software. In fact, the player is viewed as a hard drive, so you can simply drag and drop unprotected (non-DRM) MP3 or WMA files. Windows Media Player is usful if you want to organize songs or sync from that program, but it isn't necessary to get songs on to the player. If you use iTunes, you will need to convert your music to MP3; Protected iTunes store songs will NOT work at all, but MP3 songs purchased from Amazon will work. Sound quality is ok, I doubt may 7-8 year olds are audiophiles!

  • Totally Fantabulistic!!!
    By AHXTIJD4TJOCK on 2007-12-28
Santa brought this for my 9 year old daughter who is a Webkinz fanatic. She had this on the top of her Santa List! For me, the software is easier than I-tunes (uses Media Player) and we had her CD's burned in no time! She also got the 'deco pak' that you can order and has decorated the ear buds. It is so cute! You can't beat the deal with having an online play area that is safe with parent controls and an MP3 player to carry around! I even sat with her and we watched the 'movies' and listened to the 'songs' on the Barbie Girl world----all totally age appropriate and Barbie-like such as the 12 Princesses and Mermania! You can't get a better toy they will play with all year long!

  • I like it my daughter loves it
    By A3QYTZRHSW750B on 2007-12-29
First, I just want to say that the item was delivered in a very timely manner. The instructions were very self-explanatory. My daughter loves it and believe it or not she is able to browse the sight without my help and she is only five. I did have one problem and that was being sent to the registration page when I had already registered and confirmed my agreement via e-mail. I downloaded some music so she could listen and she is as happy as a lark. I think my greatest excitement was the price.

  • So Cute!!!
    By A3B3NLZ9H3UR6U on 2007-12-31
I bought this MP3 player for my 6 yr old twins for Xmas. They love music and are always stealing my CD's. I also wanted them to have a way to listen to Irish music to practice their dance steps. They love them and so do I! This player is so easy to use, and downloading the music was as easy as copying a file to a memory stick. There arent any fancy playlist options but who cares! All I know is that the backseat of my car is no longer a battle zone for which song to put on the radio. They each have their Barbie player earplugs in and little smiles on their faces. And who can beat the price!!! They are also just as interested in changing the little outfits that come with the player. I highly recommend this as an inexpensive way to give your kid her own music without paying for a complicated MP3 player.

  • great toy
    By A27LCE44YKXYUV on 2007-12-31
this was the best gift i bought anyone for xmas. i bought this for my 10 yr old daughter because she is a barbie freak. i was not sorry or disappointed, she would play with this 24/7 if i let her. in addition to the mp3 player, she really enjoys the web site and interacting with other girls with similar interests.

my only gripe is limited access to tech support, which i needed because i let her try the registration process herself and it got messed up. i took me 3 days of calling before i was able to talk to a real person. after I got to talk to a real person, it was a matter of minutes before the problem was corrected.

  • Barbie Girl MP3 player
    By A3151B13YEYJW8 on 2008-01-12
I bought it for my 8 year old who loves it. She loved opening up the whole Barbie World. She likes changing the outfits on the actual MP3 player too. Loading songs onto it was really easy. Not sure about the durability as we've only had it since Christmas. So far so good. Overall, I'd reccommend it.

  • Wasted plastic gizmo...
    By A17AYY585BIAAJ on 2008-01-20
My stepdaughter had her mind made up that she needed to have this Barbie MP3 player for her happiness. I highly suspect that her stepsisters convinced her that this was the truth. After seeing one in person I couldn't really bring myself to spend over $50 on this cheap trinket. I tried to convince her that another MP3 player would be far more useful and durable, but of course that wasn't the point of this object , was it? She had already ventured upon the virtual Barbie world online and this also influenced her choice/need. Upon opening would not function and had to send back after customer service determined the base must be faulty. This christmas present is still not replaced as of 1/20/2008. I am hopeful for a positive result but what a hassle for junk. Mattel has been great about not adding any additional cost for me like shipping, but I did have to print the shipping label and spend time to have it repacked.

  • Barbie Girls MP3 tests Amazon's customer service
    By AFC92VJK0DQEM on 2008-01-28
I bought a Barbie Girl for my daughter for Xmas. It was defective. The computer didn't recognize the hardware device. I notified Amazon. They immediately send a replacement, while I gathered together all the parts to make a return. The new BG arrived within a few days and works great. My daughter enjoys the website. The music is easy to download from CD's. We haven't tried getting tunes elsewhere. Overall a good product. But I really appreciate Amazon's easy and quick return process with the prepaid shipping label. I'll continue to shop at [...].

  • My daughter loves this
    By A37YKZRO7CGIAM on 2008-01-30
My daughter really wanted this for Christmas and didn't get it. She already has a really good mp3 player and I didn't think this was worth the money. So when it went on sale after Christmas I grabbed it for her 6th birthday. Now I only wish I had bought more than one. She absolutely loves this. It loads really quickly and sounds decent. She's dropped it more than once with no problem. She loves changing the look with the added fashion packs that she got. And she really likes the website. It's not quite as cool as Webkinz, but is different and a lot of fun. I would highly recommend this.

  • B-A-R-B-I-E GIRL
    By AJUZM544OKO1A on 2008-02-19
First let me say, this is was delivered within a timely manner. I purchased this for my daughter and a friend of mines grand daughter for Christmas, they are both 6.. They LOVE this toy. We were able to download music from the internet as well as from CD's. My six year old goes on the barbie girl website and loves it, she has made many friends. She loves the two songs that came with the BARBIE Girl and wouldn't trade it for the world.

  • Great for young girls
    By ATY70MUHFXL6K on 2008-02-26
My daughter received this for her 5th Birthday, although I believe the target audience is a bit older. We have not used the online application yet, because I feel she's too young, but the MP3 player itself is cute, and my daughter loves it. It works well, she uses it all the time, and she loves the fact that she can change the look anytime she wants. I do wish it had a screen so I could immediately go to the album I want, but using the fast forward button to get to the song we want really isn't that much of a bother. Charging is easy, and downloading doesn't get much simpler. I bought one for my niece's 7th Birthday too, since we liked it so much.

  • Barbie Girls Lightweight but Good as Gold
    By AFEPOGELF8H2A on 2008-05-08
I had my doubts before purchasing the Barbie Girls mp3 players for my two daughters. Being a Mac user, I knew that they weren't fully compatible, so I was worried that they would be difficult to get up and running. Have no fear! I had the music loaded in a matter of minutes once the player was charged. The biggest problem is having to charge on the USB port of a computer, which is not always at hand. The other difficulty we've had is with my younger daughter constantly losing the little tiny shoes that her Girl wears. From my two girls, two thumbs up!

  • Great for girls. doll and mp3 together.
    By A2QDG0PSOBPVGT on 2008-05-21
I bought this for my 8 year old daughter and she is very happy with it. She specially liked the accesories that she can put on the mp3 and on the earphones. You can change the look of the doll just snapping more hair and accesories. The quality of sound is excellent for a player this cheap. Also girls can go into special sections of the Barbie web site. The doll looks very nice in your desk or table.
This is a very good option now when your daughter asks for an mp3 player.

  • This toy wasn't what I wanted at all!
    By A1EUEGEXTQAUOP on 2008-05-25
I wanted a Barbie Girl for my birthday for so long and sure enough, for my birthday I got one. I was so happy! When I brought it home it worked for about two times but then the third time it didn't recognize my barbie girl. Then, I just put it up on a shelf for a long time. When I took it down yesterday, it still didn't work. The computer recognized it but the site didn't. I now just use it for and mp3 Player. The earphones have great sound and it has to be REALLY LOUD for anyone next to you to be able to hear it, which is a good thing. I called customer service and they said that the time that it was on the shelf they probably updated the site. That made sense so she put something on our computer for us to download and update to the site. We updated to the site and it still doesn't let me buy a pet or wear jewelery or hairstyles that require the barbie girl. If I try to go into Club Beauty they say to connect my barbie girl to go in when my barbie girl is already in the computer! My mom got angry so we went online and bought a Be-Bratz. I hope it will be better than this barbie girl!
