My daughter is in heaven. Doesn't work with iTunes store. By A1Q8FNRO611T2M on 2007-08-01
My 6-year-old is so excited about her new Barbie Girl. And I've had lots of fun with it, too. You should have seen her eyes light up when she heard the first song that we downloaded. One minor, but nice, feature is that there is a Barbie song already on the player, which comes partially charged. We had a long day of errands before we could get home to download music, but she listened contentedly to the existing Barbie song over and over. I'm not sure about the headphones yet. There are three sizes of interchangable cushions for the ears, but at this point even the smallest ones aren't keeping them in her ears well. She's very petite. Maybe she just needs to get used to them.
One major disappointment for me is that the Barbie Girl is not compatible with music downloaded from the iTunes store or WMA files protected with DRM. I've only dealt with the iPod before. Maybe that's common for mp3 players? I don't know.
We've tried to do the online stuff, but children really need to be able to read and write (type) fluently before they can truly enjoy making friends. Right now I have to sit with her and read what others are saying and then type her responses. She absolutely loves the "making friends" part of the website, but I won't be able to help her with it everyday like I did today. Maybe it will encourage her to get serious about learning to read so she can do it on her own. She also has fun decorating her room and dressing up. With the Barbie Girl mp3 player she has access to much more furniture, clothing, and accessories.
I think it is educational as an introduction to related technology. We've already used several terms that she will need to know. . . USB port, username, password, log in, transfer files, etc. I don't know how durable the toy is, as we just got it today. It seems to be well made.
Save your money; buyer beware By A2EALXAZDOKDSS on 2007-08-13
My daughter wanted this so bad for her birthday; we changed our minds and bought one for her. My husband is against Barbie software because of previous spyware problems with their software. My daughter never had a chance to play with it because of disc problems; it may have been scratched, but what do you expect when it comes packaged right up against hard plastic with no protective sleeve. The tech support was no help at all...the woman knew next to nothing about computers or the new product. The biggest laugh is when she told my husband....we're a toy company! So save your time and money, we returned this and bought her a Be-Bratz doll instead. It's half the price and all you need is a USB port; no disc to install! It's not an MP3 player, but she doesn't care, the web site is great. She always liked the Bratz dolls better anyway.
The chat room security is world-class By A1JVF3T97MA9QW on 2007-11-06
http://blog.wired.com/27bstroke6/2007/11/barbie-becomes-.html
My analysis is that this is a very safe chat system for kids. I give it "The Sid Seal of Security" (SSS).
- The authentication protocol is actually very sophisticated. Gene Kathol at FDR has been promoting this idea for years.
- The chat is white listed, meaning that you can't use words that aren't in the approved dictionary.
This means that if a sex-crazed heterosexual wants to chat with your daughter, he would first have to put his Barbie Girl into a USB port of her computer. Given the incidence of family member incest, this is not out of the question, but this is far-fetched, since on-line chat is not the usual enticement vector used by fathers, uncles, and brothers. It would be a bust anyway, because I'm guessing Mattel logs the date, time, and location of the enrollment.
All and all, I think it is a very cool idea. I can see it being extended to other demographics, with USB fobs that range from Transformers for young boys, to Hanna Montana for 'tween girls, and iPods for teenagers.
And just in time for Christmas!

Toy for my daughter By A2Y0VCAAE922C3 on 2007-09-14
My daughter is very happy with this toy. The only thing I don't like about the website this toy is for that one or the other way they are pulling the money from the parents pockets teasing the kids with some disabled features forcing to buy new products that have an access code to them and unfortunately an expiration date.
Gotta Have a Barbie Girl By AXJC02FOPFJ02 on 2007-08-08
MP3 player - good deal. Down side....instructions could be better for installing the program. Additionally, website still be worked on and tends to freeze often - so kind of a pain. Otherwise, my 7 and 9 year olds love this and the Barbie Girl website that this allows you to fully participate in.

     By AVIG8SFE7C39T on 2007-08-09
We pre-ordered this for our daughter (11) who has not stopped playing with it since she got it. Mattel has designed and built the perfect MP3 player for girls who don't have a need for all the iPod bells and whistles. The online content is fun and captivating and the optional outfits make this a doll for the new age. Absolutely wonderful.
- Really Cool MP3 player!!
     By A25WZI2YIVZ36Q on 2007-09-11
I recently purchased this for my daughter's 9th birthday. She absolutely loves it! She had already been playing on [...], but now she is able to use her "B" bucks to get a dog and other accessories. Parents need to help child install on computer, it can be a little tricky. Her friends are all jealous and are already making their Christmas lists with the Barbie Girl as thier #1 toy. My daughter also likes that she can interchange the clothes and faces.

     By A2ZBERSUY4YPI2 on 2007-08-18
I received the product as suggested (4days), very prompt. The only problem was that during the registration online I could not continue the process as the registration code at the bottom was already a used number. I called the help number on the booklet and it took them 1 week to replace the number. Nevertheless, my daughter is very happy with the product and thats whats important.

This toy is not really a toy. It is an Mp3 player. My niece really liked it. You can do extra things at Barbie.everythinggirl.com with this item. It is neat.
- Barbie Girl is alot of fun!
     By A11JFAS13CVZT on 2007-09-16
This mp3 player is very stylish looking and easy enough for a 7 year old to operate. It is a lot of fun!
- Love the barbie Girls
     By AOCJDMMUVE2X6 on 2007-11-18
My daughter received this for her 9th birthday. It came out of the box ready to go already had songs and already charged for usage. Very easy to setup and easy to use. Works great with Windows Vista on my laptop. She very much enjoys this product. Very happy customer.a
- It's decent
     By A8NZ1ZMICRTDZ on 2007-12-07
I bought this for my daughter's 8th birthday in November. She loves it! We haven't even gone online to do the games yet. She just likes having the MP3 player in the shape of a Barbie and also being able to change the face, outfit and hair of the doll. There are two negatives that go with this for her. It comes with three sizes of earbuds, but all three are still too big for my daughter's tiny ears. She gets frustrated about that, because they keep falling out. I can put them in my ears fine, but her ear holes are too small. They need to include one more smaller size. The other thing, is that the hair pieces that come with it do not stay on very well. It is liable to fall off the more the pieces are changed, but that could just be this particular one. Nothing is perfect! Overall my daughter is satisfied with it.
- Great Value/Great MP3 Player
     By A3VT9WER9AQSIK on 2007-12-21
I bought this for both of my daughters for Christmas. When it came I took it out registered it and loaded songs for them, so they were ready to go! It is very easy to use. Make sure that you have Windows Media Player 11. IT will not work with any other version of Media Player. I downloaded Media Plaer 11 easily from the internet without any problems at all. It is a terrific MP3 player. Perfect for any little girl! We haven't tried the Barbie World yet, but I know the girls will LOVE it! I highly recommend this product!
- well made barbie doll toy
     By AQ0VD2YJADTGY on 2007-12-25
Bought this for 7-yr old niece. She LOVED her new mp3 player. Sound qualify was pretty good, and the toy is well made. Fashion pack "snap-on" cloths were durable and very stylish. Read a lot about the problem w/ the online entertainment portion of this toy. Haven't had the chance to test that out & thus can't comment on it. However, just the mp3 portion seems to be fun enough for young girls. It retains the barbie cloth changing concept they like and now added the mp3 player.
- SOFTWARE
     By A1AO813D4ZO4JO on 2007-12-27
My daughter got this for Christmas. It came with one song and precharged. When I got plugged it in to my computer it said it would work better if I had a faster USB port, but it seems to work fine with the ones that I have. It says you need Windows media player 11 to transfer your music. I found that the free software MediaMonkey works just fine. I have not out how to delete songs from the player yet but we have only had it for 2 days. Overall, my daughter loves it. A great first mp3 player. She loves the online site as well.
- Good Entertainment for a Beginning MP3 Player
     By A2E6HP2EC3ZO66 on 2007-12-31
Our 8 year old daughter LOVES her new MP3 player that she got for Christmas. She was very content with the songs already on the player until we could download some for her. The interchangeable outfits/hair/shoes/faces are a great idea but just be careful when removing and placing new ones in. The plastic doesn't seem to be real sturdy. Our daughter seems to be able to figure everything out on her own, which is good. All in all, it was the perfect gift that she received this year!!
- great first mp3 player for girl
     By on 2008-01-02
I will make this quick, my daughter loves this toy. Not only does she love playing the online games but she loves (with my help) downloading songs. Follow the directions, very easy to do from either a music cd or existing music files on your computer. Some one had posted what site to download from. If you have windows media player, very easy from there. I suggest getting it. This Christmas toy was well worth the money. I would also like to know how to delete unwanted songs, did not see anything in the directions covering that. We have only had it about a week, so I am hoping I can figure that out next. Overall all, great toy.

I don't know if maybe we are doing something wrong BUT I cannot seem to get online for my six year old granddaughter. we worked on this for hours. Seems like every screen name we picked was already taken then we got to the part to choose a character and it just would not work. Maybe I don't know what to do but we followed the directions. She went to bed and never even got to play with it yet.
- Daugher really likes it
     By A2YK6GAM6DZ2UR on 2008-01-08
The only thing about this is that it does not show the song playing in a window... but other than that it's easy for my 10yr. old daughter to use- she's downloaded songs and changed her playlist without needing any help from me. She really likes the online features, too!

We bought this toy for a friends daughter and our daughter. Our friends daughter absolutely loved it and it is quite cute. We will soon see what our daughter thinks of it when she gets it is June of this year.
- Pleasantly Surprised!
     By A1M6M1UV4ZO04A on 2008-01-09
After reading some pretty decent reviews on this web site, I bought this for my 6 yr old daughter for xmas. I have to say I am totally impressed with this product, which is surprising since most Barbie products are junk. It was very easy to install the software and load music. We just ripped all of my daughter's cd's to my computer and it was easy to load from there. We have no itunes music so this was not an issue for us.
The quality of the sound is excellent and the headphones come with different size ear plugs to fit different size ears. The smallest size fits my daughter perfectly.
I had bought the Sansa Shaker for my 4 yr old daughter but ended up returning that and buying the Barbie for her instead. The Sansa only takes mp3's and all of our music is WMA which the Barbie MP3 supports.
It is very similar in "controls" to the ipod Shuffle but a lot more stylish. I would highly recommend!

I bought two of these for my 7 and 6 year old girls. I then bought a regular MP3 player for my 8 year old son. I can't say that I am realy impressed with this. From reading the directions you can not down load music from a site to put on it. My girls registered for the barbie girl site the day after they got them and have not asked to be back since.
- Cute, Clever, Fun
     By A2PXQRU5YMR38N on 2008-01-12
My 9 year old loves this! It's a very clever idea - being able to "dress it" like you would a regular Barbie doll. It works well - I wish it was designed to be compatible with my Mac. The one thing that disappointed my daughter was that you can purchase different Pet Deco Packs, but you can only "own" one pet. She was hoping to have a bunch of cute pets hanging around in her room. Otherwise, it's her favorite gift.
- love it
     By A1H9UCOAQT6EXU on 2008-01-13
The instructions are really easy to get your barbie girl on line. I like how they hid all the passwords you need to get started. My five year old loves playing on line and chatting with other girls. She expessally likes haveing a pet to play with.
- My Daughter LOVES it!!
     By A1VWD9FMW6YI61 on 2008-01-14
I was somewhat leary to purchase this item for a 6 year old but when Amazon had it on sale for $19 I just couldn't pass it up. It was a breeze to set up and uploading songs from CDs was just as easy. I am not a computer person and haven't tried the Itune files or anything like that, just straight from all her CDs. My daughter takes it everywhere. So far there have been no problems at all. I do wish that the Barbie Girl website activation was for more than one year though. Who knows if she will even still be interested in that website in a year but it would be nice to have if she was.
- Barbie Girls MP3 Player Review
     By A2M4Q5Y95472H4 on 2008-01-18
My daughter loves this MP3 player. We haven't done much of the online stuff with it, we just haven't got that far yet, so I can't comment about that. However, she loves music and wanted an ipod for Christmas, but being only 6 yrs old, I didn't want to spend an arm and a leg on an expensive ipod. This is perfect for her, she listens to it every day. And she calls it her ipod!
- FUN FUN FUN
     By A1SF6KJHOZK2CQ on 2008-01-18
My daughter requested this from Santa. She loves it. She has had so much fun listening to music and audio books. We homeschool, so I load audio books and lessons onto the player for her to listen to and it is a fun way for her to get in a lesson. The online world seems to be lots of fun for her too. Educationally, earning money and not running out or planning for a certian product for your Barbie Girl online is good experience for future budgeting. The little clothes and items that snap on and off are easy for her to munipulate. The only complaint has to do with the ear buds. They broke at the base/plug after a week. My daughter was either pulling them in and out of the player with too much force OR they were poorly made. She has replaced them and has had no problems with the other ear buds. I love the fact that the box it comes in turns into a storage case for all the little snap on features, the cd and other extras so everything stays in one place and nothing gets lost as some of the snap on features are tiny. Overall, this has been a wonderful toy for my 9 year old.
- Better than expected.
     By A19MUR81RO625Q on 2008-02-08
This is a great first MP3 for the 5 to 9 year old set. You can accessorize it with the little clip on fashions. It holds an impressive amount of songs for the price and the software worked well. We don't use the online feature, but maybe older girls would. It is a sturdy player that is fun without being overly babyish. Perfect for young girls. We got all the accessory sets on close out so it is two toys in one.
- My daughter loves it.
     By A31HRPPQKZAXYH on 2008-03-07
Bought this for my 5 year old daughter but wasn't sure how she would like it.
She loves it and takes it everywhere. Loading songs was easy. It is very easy for her to use. She is an attention getter everywhere she takes it.
The only negative is the earplugs. As will all MP3 players, the ear buds are the biggest problem. We ended up just buying normal headphones to use.
- good for the price
     By A2QXGC5YO5AFWZ on 2008-04-19
Its a good first mp3 player. Got it for my 6 yr old niece. The first one had a problem with the USB connection. Player would turn off when connected to the computer and I wasnt able to add songs. Amazon sent a replacement. Hopefully this one doesnt have problems. Sound quality is ok, but I guess it wouldnt matter to a 6 yr old. She enjoys it. Havent used the barbie girls online features yet.
