Rose Art Smart! Easelx$39.99
    (22 reviews)
Best Price: $39.99
Ideal for the budding artist, this easel provides the perfect workspace for your child's creative skills. The rolling paper bar at the top of the easel lets you roll out more paper -- so after you complete one masterpiece, you have a fresh palette for the next one! Easel comes with a canvas carry bag so you can bring it anywhere. Crafted with a sturdy metal frame, the entire easel (except frame) is washable. Art supplies not included. Measures 26"L x 22"W x 50"H. Some assembly required. The RoseArt Smart Easel provides a sturdy work surface, handy access to markers and materials, a dry erase board and a roll of paper that attaches to the easel to keep your young artist's creativity freely flowing. Intended for ages four and up, this kid-sized easel also features a lightweight, portable design so that it can easily be taken outdoors or on the road. This means that your little van Gogh can be out in the field painting sunflowers in no time, and that the whole easel can be compactly stowed away when not in use.
The Smart Easel is lightweight, portable, and features pockets, and pen holders. View larger. |
A large fabric under-tray serves as a catch-all for finished artwork. View larger. | Art Anytime, Anywhere After fairly simple assembly, which requires an adult but not any tools, the included 50-foot roll of butcher paper slips onto a bar at the top for an ongoing paper supply. Three plastic clips are included to hold the paper securely in place at the bottom. The Smart Easel also comes with eight washable markers (in classic rainbow colors plus versatile brown and black), so your young artist can get started right away. Two flaps swing out from the easel's sides, featuring mesh pockets and elastic pen holsters that are designed to hold a variety of coloring materials. The plastic paint tray at the bottom is the perfect size for small paint jars, wet brushes, glue or glitter. A large fabric under-tray at the base serves as a catch-all for finished artwork, at least until the refrigerator debut or hallway retrospective can be scheduled. When art time is over, or a new location for drawing is desired, the easel can be quickly washed down and folded up. The fabric side flaps, under-tray, and carrying bag are all made of washable materials, and the paint tray can be removed for cleaning or spills. Stray marks from the washable pens can be removed from most surfaces with warm water and mild soap. The easel's durable metal frame with plastic connecting pieces is 50 inches tall and has a sturdy 4-leg design. Weighing in at about 13 pounds, the easel is substantial enough to remain stable while in use, but light enough to be carried by an adult or older child. The set also includes a large bag with a handle and shoulder strap for easy transportation. Set-up and Organization Features A slight downside to the easel is its assembly process. Although the easel includes easy-to-read directions, and though the pieces themselves were easy to snap together without any tools, the set-up was a bit confusing and took about 30 minutes. Once assembled, the easel has an inviting appeal. The design of the side flaps definitely encourages tidiness. Plus, having all the supplies neatly on hand, and all the colors in full view, helps keep the creative momentum going. The thrill of having all that paper at your fingertips is also a great incentive to make more art. Another small downside is that the paint tray is a bit too narrow to hold a mason jar for cleaning brushes or to comfortably balance an open watercolor box. And while the tray's separate cup-shaped space is handy for preventing spills, it is also quite small -- about the size of one paint jar or a Dixie cup. And inconveniently, the easel doesn't come with any dry erase markers or erasers, which makes its whiteboard seem like an accident waiting to happen. However, even if the dry erase board gets permanently marked, it will still serve its main purpose as a sturdy work surface for the paper. Overall, the RoseArt Smart Easel inspires creativity in young artists-to-be, with an easy-to-clean, portable design that will keep parents pleased. What's in the Box Easel with dry erase board, side flaps, under-tray, paint tray, carrying bag, 50-foot paper roll, and 8 washable markers.

Okay but... By A200WLLF0LH9SW on 2007-11-16
Well my daughter is a drawing nut. So I knew she would love this and so far she does. The drawbacks are the drawing board is pretty flexable. I was excited for the dry erase board since my daughter loves those things well I pull it out of the box and it's in 2 peices. You clip the board together and there is a line, bump right down the middle. So when you draw you go over a bump. It doesn't line up without having a lip on it. If I would have seen this in the pictures and video I would not have purchased this easel. To be honest I'm quite disappointed luckily she doesn't seem to annoyed with it yet!
Not an easel expert. . . By A3UL810POH56PC on 2007-12-30
Our 5 year old loves it and went through the included roll of paper in a few days. As I type this review, Amazon is offering a bundle that includes 18" easel paper rolls. 18" rolls will not fit on this easel! You need 14" which I am not finding very easily.
Good fun for our kids, with only a few minor drawbacks By A1JHFU6J44WJS6 on 2008-02-17
Our kids and their friends have a lot of fun with this easel. I bought it with an "EXPO dry erase system" that fits nicely into the pouch beneath the easel, so they have extra pens, an eraser and some spray to make cleaning the white board easier. The product was fairly easy and intuitive to set up, though the instructions leave a lot to be desired (24 photo illustrations with no accompanying text).
The main drawbacks:
* The pouch beneath the easel is a lot more shallow than the pictures would indicate. There's only about an inch and a half to two inches of "lip", so our kids can't store many of their drawings there, like I'd intended. You could get a small plastic bucket for the space to hold items to make it more useful.
* The pens tend to fall out of the elastic holders on the easel's two side wings. As I mentioned, I got them an EXPO set that stores nicely under the easel. Our kids haven't utilized these side wings much at all or this would be more of a problem.
* The kids' only complaint is that the dry erase board is hard to clean. You'll need some spray to help with that.
* The seam down the middle of the white board is a bit annoying, as other reviewers have mentioned. Oddly our kids (8 and 12) don't seem to mind that much. Of course when they draw on the paper the seam appears in those pictures, too. If you think your child will not like this, definitely buy a different easel.
Redesign suggestions for RoseArt:
1) Add more fabric to the front section of the pouch beneath the easel to make the space more functional.
2) Make the white board a solid piece and give it its own carrying case. It wouldn't add to the overall weight, and the money spent on a little extra fabric and a different shipping container might be saved by not having to machine apart the two pieces. I'd be willing to pay a couple of extra bucks to fix this, which is really the biggest flaw of the product.
3) Take a few minutes and have someone come up with better assembly instructions. My husband and I are pretty bright but got stuck partway through because the next step was not very clear.
Can't find the paper refills!!!!! By A1XGNY5WWG8KR on 2008-01-22
My daughters received this for Christmas and have finished off the roll of paper. Now I cannot find the refills...they are 14 inches. It is a neat easel with lots of pockets for storage of crayons, markers and paints. Folds up really nice too. There is another downfall though, the board is 2 pieces, and they do not meet evenly when put together, so this creates an uneven drawing surface.
Daughter just loves it By A2UJTQXCZ5CZJ3 on 2007-12-04
This is such a great toy. I like that you can fold it up and store it under a bed or take it with you. Although it is cold, my daughter insisted on setting it up outside so she could draw the landscape.
- Good with drawing paper
     By A2503LT8PZIHAD on 2008-09-03
This is a quality product. I was surprised because I had never taken Rose Art anything very seriously. Given two sets of markers, I would always choose Crayola. Don't bother with the white board. Enjoy it as an easel.
I was very impressed by this easel which I purchased as a Lightning Deal for $[...].
The directions for assembly are ludicrous. Really you have to look at the pictures and take your best guess.
- Not Durable
     By A1WPW4PUGY6DFT on 2008-09-09
We bought this easel as a Christmas gift for my daughters and nieces. With 4 girls using the easel all under the age of 7, it only lasted barely a month. The price is good, and it might be good for one child, but we are now shopping for a more sturdy easel. "Buy cheap, buy twice" definitely applies to this product.
- still brand new...
     By ATY6X8CV334UF on 2007-12-26
i just purchased this item for my 10yr old daughter's christmas gift and assembled it last night. assembly was relatively painless and quick. my only observation (without use) is that it will not be as easily transported as the description suggests. many parts (ok, 4) must be dismantled in order to close the easel for storage and transport. i thought from the video that it would sort of close like a stroller, but it doesn't. i think my daughter will enjoy it though. happy holidays.
- review for easel
     By AW7WIA30JM58T on 2008-08-09
I bought this product for my 4 year old son. It is really cool because you can paint or use markers and that is what he really loves to do. all art promotes creativity and that is very important esspecially for small children. It was very easy to put together, everything just snaps into place. it has sufficient storage space for markers, paint, and his smock.
- Perfect for a limited space
     By A1NAQ15MEDYW2K on 2008-08-26
We got this so our daughter could have one (this will be for her birthday) that can be put away when the space is needed for other things. It has a wrinkle where the whiteboard folds (and it gives a little when marking on). We tested it to know what to expect on her birthday. Other than that, it seems remarkably sturdy.
- Fun... Yet Frustrating
     By A1YCWZWOXLUAY5 on 2008-09-18
My youngest son loves art.. He loves to draw. So, I purchased this for his birthday. He and I put it together with no help from the directions. We used the picture of the item from the box! The directions were not clear, and there were no written directions... it was all pictures! Anyway, once we got it together, we did notice a minor problem. The hard surface used to write on comes in two pieces. So right in the middle of the writing surface, you have a major indention where the two pieces connect. There is no possibility of writing on the pad of paper without having the annoying dip, aka lack of support, from behind when you get to the middle of your picture.
The product comes with markers and the paper. My son was really excited about writing directly on the hard surface which needs a dry erase marker. Of course, I wasn't prepared to have those types of markers available; those markers aren't readily lying around my house.
The toy has a lot of cubbies to hold markers, crayons, and such. All kids like to have little areas to put their things. Overall, we are happy with the item. It goes back to the tried and true statement, "you get what you pay for." If we wanted a professional art easel, we wouldn't have purchased this one.
- Good buy, but ours was missing a part
     By A1XDDXS0E4NN7E on 2007-12-26
This is a very good product for the price, but the only complaint I have is that we were missing one of the four arms to hold up the side pouches. Other than that, which we are working on resolving, everything is very good.
- Easy to assemble - great educational value
     By A2DITG9EXCNPZ3 on 2008-01-18
This easel is very easy to assemble (5 minutes) and it's great since it encourages our 6 year old daughter to follow her drawing & painting hobby.
Only small issue so far: The paper roll and the paper should be fixed in a better way to the platform.
In summary it's a great educational toy.
- Loads of fun....excellent value!
     By AZGJN997VQITM on 2008-01-21
We ordered this for my daughter who is the aspiring artist at age 7. It arrived promptly, was super easy to put together, and has held up perfect since Christmas with use by her 5 year old brother as well. We keep it in our den and they use it every single day.
- Smart Easel is fun and durable
     By A2C807WYRUQA5W on 2008-01-21
My 5 year old son loves to play with this easel. He uses the dry erase board and the paper roll. He needs a little help getting the paper into the clips at the bottom of the dry erase board. It is nice that everything he needs is in reach. It was easy to assemble. I would absolutely recommend this product.

     By A10QV25EPU4OTE on 2008-06-16
She loves to color and now is painting on the paper. Keeps her brain active during the summer and thinking of things she can do on the easel. Love this product alot. Just need to get the right paper size for it.
- Don't expect to create a master piece on this!
     By A2ZQY4F2BECV77 on 2008-07-21
I got this easel at 75% off. It is quite easy to put together and it looks as good as the picture, except ... the drawing board actually comes in two seperate pieces. This makes drawing/ painting in the middle quite impossible.
- Bought this on lightning Deals and my 3 year old and 8 year old Cant get enough
     By A2Q2HY7GZCRQXC on 2008-08-10
I bought this a few weeks ago for $[...] on a lightning deal, bought some paint pens to go with it and set it up for my daughter and son, They cant get enough, even at $[...] , I would buy another if I needed it. This is a very good product overall, yeah the easel has a line down the middle but its **Portable** and can go anywhere, and I have a school art supply place right next to my apartment so the paper hasn't been an issue. I recommend this for anyone!!
- no paper

- Found paper refills!
     By A2J3F21LJ32V8Y on 2008-11-14
I bought this for my 3yr son this summer. I came here to shop for paper refills. I saw lots of other parents weren't able to easily find refills. I went to RoseArt website & got their number. Customer service sent me an order form. Seems Walmart was to carry refills but they are not in all their stores. 30ft roll costs $3.99 plus $3.50 s&h for EACH roll. A bit pricey but much better than nothing. Hope this helps the other parents looking. !
