Four Interfaces for Unmatched Performance and Compatibility
The drive features USB 2.0, FireWire 400, FireWire 800, and eSATA interfaces, ensuring compatibility with any computer or drive. USB 2.0 offers up to a 480 Mbps transfer rate, while eSATA provides superior transfer speeds of up to 1500 Mbps. And the two FireWire ports will let you daisy chain a second drive easily. These connections give you the versatility to connect directly to a drive via the eSATA connection while you're working on demanding multi-media applications, while still having the ability to transfer or back up data files from your laptop or other computers via the USB or FireWire connections.

Superior Drive Performance for Power Users
The d2 Quadra is an ideal drive for power users such as video editors and was voted the 2007 Hard Disk of the Year by VideoMaker magazine. The drive features a rotational speed of 7200 rpm and a cache of at least 16 MB. Coupled with the eSATA interface, the drive achieves an average seek time (write) of under 10 ms. This speed makes it fast enough for working with media such as sound and video directly on the drive.

With a capacity of 320 GB, the d2 Quadra can hold up to 22 hours of DV video or 112,000 songs or 320,000 photos. If you purchase multiple drives, they can be set to RAID 1 for data redundancy and protection, or RAID 0 for even greater speed.

The d2 Quadra also offers three power management options: "Auto" for energy efficiency; "On" for instant access; and "Off" for data protection. A smart fan automatically turns on and off depending on the temperature, ensuring that the drive stays cool and quiet. The drive also lets you back up files or launch any application with a simple push of the front blue button. This "shortcut button" can be configured to launch any document or application, or initiate the included EMC Retrospect Express software that offers automated backups.

Smart, Elegant Design
With the d2 Quadra, LaCie's designers have fashioned a versatile, attractive and sturdy drive that offers several space-saving options for stacking. The durable aluminum casing offers excellent heat dissipation, and thanks to the drive's detachable stand, it can be placed vertically to save space, or horizontally to stack multiple drives. The drive can even be rack-mounted to fit into an audio/video setup.

Measuring a slim 1.7 x 6.3 x 6.8 inches (WxHxD), and weighing 3.31 pounds, the drive is compact enough to fit inside your briefcase for those times you need to transfer files between computers.

Works with Windows and Macs
The LaCie d2 Quadra Hard Drive is compatible with Windows 2000, XP and Vista, as well as Mac OS 10.2.8 and higher, and is bootable on both when using FireWire or eSATA. It is also compatible with Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard and Time Machine.

Included with the drive is EMC Retrospect Express backup software for both Windows and Mac, making backup a breeze. Also included is LaCie "1-Click" backup software for PC or Mac and SilverKeeper Software for automatic backup and file verification (Mac).

The LaCie d2 Quadra 320 GB Hard Drive is backed by a 3-year limited warranty.

  • Reliable Drive

    By A21SRZLO8ORNAC on 2008-02-05
I have 2 new iMac's, one has a 320GB internal hard drive and the other 1TB. I have a 320GB LaCie hooked up to one and a 1TB LaCie hooked up to the other for backup purposes only. Running Apple's "Time Machine" the drives work flawlessly as my whole Mac is backed up every hour. The only complaint that I may have, and the reason for 4 stars and not 5, is that the drives are a bit noisy. Not enough that I would not buy another, but I previously used FireFly/FireLite drives which made no sound whatsoever. I chose the LaCie for the reasonable price for the large capacity...and the Firewire 800 ports.

  • LaCie Getting a Bum Rap

    By A22YDY8AOUR3S0 on 2007-12-06
Not sure about these reviews. I've had the LaCie for over 2 years now without a problem. Wondering if these people are beating them to death or something. It works fantastic with multiple differenct ports depending on what I want for speed, or just my mood! Auto turn on is great. Actually, I think I know THE problem ...... the bad reviews are using pc's ...... these work GREAT on the MAC ...... the REAL computer!

  • Makes my OS Crash

    By AVOTJ270J6HLA on 2008-01-09
I have a Macbook with a 2 GHz Intel Core Duo processor and 2 GB 667 MHz DDR2 SDRAM running OS X Leopard. I bought this drive (not from Amazon) last night. After taking it home, unpacking it and starting it up according to the instructions provided by LaCie, I plugged it into my computer's Firewire 400 port. A few seconds later my entire Operating System crashed, and I had to restart. I tried a second time with the same result. I also tried using the USB 2.0 cable and port but it made no difference. I had to return the drive this morning.

  • Not the one for my critical stuff.

    By A3IC176YQY6PUX on 2008-01-25
I don't mean to bad mouth any particular company or product, but this is the experience that I had with this particular drive.

I purchased this LaCie after making some basic comparisons and reading various reviews here and elsewhere. After I received the drive, I opened it up and read and followed the installation instructions; which for Mac users amounts to nothing more than connecting power and an interface cable. Beautiful. Finally a cross-platform product that arrives ready for the Mac right out of the box rather than the inverse (PC/Windows users have to reformat the drive).

I connected the drive via the provided Firewire 400 cable to my 15" 2.0GHz MacBook Pro running 10.5.1 and prepared Time Machine for an initial backup.

From that point, it went down hill fast. The drive took a little time to fire up, but it did start up and immediately mounted on the desktop. Time Machine took over as expected and started to back up my entire hard drive.

After about 10 minutes, the drive decided to power down all on it's own. Time Machine displayed an error that the back up failed, and I tried again. Again it failed.

After that, the power switch (a three-position rocker switch with Off/Auto/On) seemed like it had no control over the unit at all, and I could not get it to fire up again, nor would it mount.

I contacted technical support and didn't hear back from them for 48 hours, so I simply chalked it up to experience and returned the unit to the retailer for a refund.

Like I said, I'm not bad mouthing LaCie or the D2 Quadra. My experience lead me to conclude that this drive would not satisfy my need for secure, reliable backup of my extremely valuable digital assets, and I intend to find something else.

  • Great HD for an IMac

    By A1WQ9P5WOD6HK0 on 2008-01-28
I bought this HD and downloaded Carbon Copy Cloner so I could use it to backup and have a bootable copy of my new iMac HD. It's worked beautifully and I've had no problems since buying it back in September, 2007. Well worth the money.

  • i have had 3 lacie external hard drives fail on me
    By A2JJPAI171G2L3 on 2007-09-08
i have had 3 lacie external hard drives fail on me. i use them about a year and then they die.

  • quiet, cool, and easy to swap other hd
    By A1P48VXJRYT98F on 2008-03-04
I had to purchase this hard drive enclosure because had tried a cheaper quad hd enclosure and it randomly would lose connection while transferring files! That is the only thing an external hd should do is be dedicated to transferring files.

Also this hard drive powers up when plugged in, or powers down when the computer is turned off. That is very nice. Also it has no fan so it is silent. It came with a 320gb hd but i took that out and used it for an OS hd inside the desktop and put a 500GB hd inside the lacie for backup.

  • Good external drive but doesn't play well with Macdrive
    By A1AHOSRGE5FML2 on 2008-03-10
This drive is a high-quality one but I couldn't use it as intended becuase it wouldn't play with macdrive or the protools 7.4 branded version of macdrive for windows. could have been my setup though.

  • Not bad till it crashes
    By A15TY90ZA79YMK on 2008-03-18
Total drive failure in 45 days is not my idea of a quality product. Thank goodness, it was not my only backup solution! Do not even try to find a technical support person to talk to - there are none. Buyer beware!!

  • LaCie d2 Quadra 320 - works OK with PC!
    By A23QU283QFK74F on 2008-06-18
Having used one of these for several months with a PC here's my observations:

This drive is solidly constructed and comes with a complete set of high-quality cables for all 4 interfaces. It even includes a tool to attach or remove the included stand with.

Using Firewire 400 or USB2, everything works perfectly, including the included software.

The drive works in eSATA mode, but the Retrospect backup software doesn't like it.

It is a bit noisy and warm, but not excessively so. The Drive Properties indicate a "STxxxxxx" manufacturer, meaning the disk inside mine was made by Seagate Technologies.

As I've recently switched to a Mac for my main system, I will likely re-format it back to Mac's HFS+ file system but for now it's doing HTFS on a PC with no issues.

It's the best Quad-interface drive I've seen at only a slightly higher price than it's main competitor which is made of cheap-feeling plastic.

    Have Fun,
    Keri
