Works well, just doesn't fit very well By A2IE2GLFWWHPEW on 2007-09-28
I have a Dell Inspiron 1505, and this lock does work with it, it's just very loose when it's locked. If I were to buy another computer lock, I would get one that doesn't have a cable that coils up, just a straight cable. My reason is that the ad said something like, "It extends up to six feet." Yeah, it probably would, but the springyness in the cable makes it so you have to put a lot of tension on it in order to do that.
I think that overall the quality of this lock is pretty good, it hasn't failed yet.
It is a little difficult to put the combination into the lock, because when it is in the computer, you have to enter the combo on the side, not the top. Typical engineering I guess.
I would recommend this lock if you don't mind little ergonomic flaws.
portable notebook lock is poor quality By AOGF0TF77T75T on 2007-12-15
before I started college, I was told that I should get a laptop lock for living in the dorms. I bought this lock from the apple store. after setting the combination, I had great difficulty fitting it into the slot on my computer, so I had a friend do it for me. later when I wanted to take it off, it was jammed and would not come off, no matter what I tried. eventually, I resorted to having it sawed off with a hacksaw. now i have the combo part permanently stuck to my computer, making me look like a bloody criminal. DON'T BUY THIS LOCK!
DO NOT BUY THIS LOCK By AJDURKGBQ29VV on 2008-03-13
I have a brand new ('08) MacBook, and I bought this cable lock at the Apple store.
Here's why this lock is terrible:
* Cable is so springy I'm afraid it will fling my computer across the room if I stretch it to more than about 4 feet long. It keeps getting caught on all of my other wires.
* It's flimsy. The fit is very loose and it seems like a good whack would pop it out of the computer.
* Setting/unseetting the combination hurts my fingertips.
* It almost got stuck on the laptop (which would have tested the theory about popping it out with a good whack).
* Once off, it was stuck again (unable to put back on the computer), as the combination had now changed on its own.
I'm returning this ASAP. Shame on the Apple store for carrying this garbage!
p.s. We bought two. My partner doesn't hate hers as much as I do mine.
Puny Cable By A1SXACDSRTE2L3 on 2008-02-09
I find it hard to believe that this is the same cable pictured at the top of the product description. Yes, the picture found when scrolling further down matches what I saw when I opened the box. Unfortunately I didn't look that far down, expecting this to be a simple purchase of the kind of cable I've been supplied by corporate employers. Alas, I found something that looks more like a "wire" than a "cable", and I have trouble imagining it being anything more than a minimal deterrent. Sorry, my four figure investment deserves more than this.
fast, easy, and perfect for you MacBook! By A28XDEUDEHLE76 on 2007-10-02
the the price and the ease of use you can't beat it! i have a MacBook that has a substantial amount of expensive Math/Bio/Chem programs on it, and this is perfect. I was having trouble finding a lock that would work with the Macs until i found this one. you won't be disapointed, use it right out of the box
- good for the price

It is a bit confusing to figure out how to use at first, but once you get the hang of it, it is very good.
One thing though, the cord could have been a little longer.
- Defective lock
     By A23S4IGEAABG3X on 2008-06-13
Despite numerous negative reviews, I took my chances and ordered this combination lock for my laptop computer. It didn't work. Supposedly, it comes with a factory pre-set combination of 0-0-0-0 and you are supposed to reset it by turning the end faceplate of the lock with a coin. I tried a coin and when it didn't budge, I tried a screwdriver, and when it still didn't budge, I tried pliers and it still didn't budge. I couldn't even figure out how to make the lock work if I were willing to use the 0-0-0-0 combination - the locking mechanism didn't change positions at all when I scrambled the combination.
I called the manufacturer's Tech Support and all they could offer was "It's defective." They advised me to send it back to the vendor (Amazon) for a full refund since the product is under warranty. I have returned it and am awaiting my refund.
I have since purchasedTargus PA410U DEFCON CL Notebook Computer Cable Lock, which is much easier to use (like most notebook locks, however, it probably won't stop a determined thief).
- did not work

The lock was defective. When inserted into the computer, I only had to turn the lock to pull it right out. It did not lock at all.

Great product, certainly better than the key lock (no missing keys). The order shipped fast & brand new, I will be ordering this item again in the near future.
- Security +++++++

A very well made and high security cable system for your lap top.
Use it or lose it.... Can't go wrong with this quality and cost...
- No problems yet
     By A24QA2C6ISM29U on 2008-08-17
Initial impressions great. No heavy use yet, but sturdy lock and relatively good ease of use (slightly difficult to lock into laptop, but no big problem). Decent value as well.
- Piece of junk

I am completely dissatisfied with this product.
I bought this for my daughter to secure her laptop at college. After I bought it I tried setting the combination and it seemed OK. I reset the combination back to the factory default 0-0-0-0. A few weeks later, the night before we were supposed to move her into her dorm, we tried setting the combination again, and the lock just wouldn't work. After setting the combination we couldn't get it to lock. After playing around a little it finally locked but then we had trouble getting it to unlock. Finally we got it unlocked but then I couldn't reset the combination to a more secure combination. The final straw cam when I discovered that all you had to do to unlock the lock is dial the first wheel of the combination. The lock pops right open no matter where the other three number wheels are at. I am going to try to return this and get something with better quality. Rest assured I will not buy another Kensington product.
- Trouble with this lock
     By A295NEM30H91HL on 2008-08-21
We recently bought this lock for my son going to college. The English directions do not fit reality. They show turning a slot 90 degrees clockwise, when in fact it is only possible to turn it about 30 degrees counter-clockwise. No red dot ever appears. After four adults and two college freshman worked with this thing for about two hours we finally got the combination set. We were so sure it wasn't going to work we went out and bought another lock in the meantime. So setting the combo is problematic.
Using the lock is also troublesome. As mentioned in other reviews, the attachment to the laptop is loose and if I were willing to risk damage to the new $3000 laptop, I feel sure I could have ripped it out with little effort.
Also, as mentioned, the cable is VERY springy. My son't Fujitsu laptop has the slot in the right front, so the lock cable is always trying to pull the thing forward and off of his desk.
The only positive thing I can say about this lock is that it does not require you to install a little metal connection point in the laptop slot, though locks that do are probably more secure.
- Don't buy this lock. It's absolutely terrible
     By A250IKVXRGI170 on 2008-08-30
I bought this lock from the apple store and it took me 20 minutes to put in on my mac. Once on, i tried to unlock it, and it wouldnt come off. So I spent hours trying to figure out the combination, i think the combination reset itself. SO, it was stuck onto my laptop. I had to call a locksmith who came and drilled it off for 100 dollars. Kensington said theyd refund me up to 80 dollars. Thats the best i can expect, i guess. But i really suggest if you want to get a laptop lock, buy one with the keys. THey are much more convenient to use.
