In God of War, Kratos, after being deceived into killing his wife and daughter, denounced his service to Ares. In order to seek absolution from his past sins, the Ghost of Sparta pledged himself as a champion to the Gods for the years to follow. These brutal crusades, in the name of Olympus, became legendary throughout the ancient world. In God of War: Chains of Olympus, Kratos will journey to lands that no mortal has ever walked upon. With the world plunged in eternal darkness and the Gods rendered powerless, Kratos will face the most feared creatures of Greek Mythology, and ultimately be forced to choose between his own personal redemption and saving the ancient world from certain destruction. Developed from the outset as an original story, God of War: Chains of Olympus delivers highly detailed graphics, incredible animation detail and yet another adventure in the dark and brutal world of Greek mythology that fans of the God of War franchise have come to know and love. Critically-Acclaimed Franchise - Brought to you by Sony Computer Entertainment America and two award-winning development teams - Santa Monica Studios and Ready At Dawn Studios

Before he waged war on the gods...he was forced to serve them

The third game in the God of War franchise, God of War: Chains of Olympus for PlayStation Portable is a prequel to the first two games in the series published for PlayStation 2, and true the high standards of God of War and God of War II, not only does it equal the efforts of its predecessors, in some ways it may even surpass them.

Kratos’ Story
The God of War franchise tells the tragic and violent story of the warrior Kratos and his dealings with the gods. The ancient world would eventually both praise and damn the infamous ‘Ghost of Sparta’ as the mortal who slayed a god, but long before his battle with Ares, Kratos sought absolution from his past sins by pledging himself as a champion to the gods. These brutal crusades in the name of Olympus became legendary, but would have far-reaching consequences. In Chains of Olympus Kratos is pushed to the edge as he is ordered by the gods to journey to the very depths of the underworld after the world plunges into darkness. There he must face the most feared creatures of Greek mythology and is forced to choose between his own personal redemption and saving the ancient world from certain destruction. It is a choice that will shake the immortals from their perches on Mt. Olympus.

God of War's Epic Gameplay Comes to the PSP
PlayStation Portable has always been head and shoulders above its competitors in the handheld market when it comes to processing power, and in God of War: Chains of Olympus the PSP platform may just have reached its highest level to date. Packed with features like dramatic camera angles, epic set pieces, cinematic cut scenes, stirring audio and seamless fast action gameplay, formerly only available on console platforms Chains of Olympus binds players to the game’s epic adventure, regardless where they are when they join in the action.

Combat Moves, Both Old and New
Nearly as defining as the name of Kratos itself, the trademark sweeping attack moves of the ‘Ghost of Sparta’ using his weapon of choice the ‘Blades of Chaos,’ epitomizes all God of War games and Chains of Olympus is no exception.

Although overall the PSP has fewer buttons than the PlayStation 2 controller, developer Ready at Dawn Studios has managed to incorporate nearly all of the attack moves and combination moves from previous games in the series into this new project. This continuity in gameplay not only provides a seamless intro into the game for veteran players, but a gentle learning curve for players new to the series. Add to this new brutal combat moves and an additional upgradable weapon and you have a combat system that will engage players at all levels.

Exploration and Puzzle Solving
From the bright gates of Attica to the darkest dungeons of Tartarus, Kratos’ journey and your own will take you through the dark and brutal world of Greek mythology. Here not only will your skill with the Blades of Chaos be tested, but your wits as well.

As you explore the dangers of the ancient world, players must be prepared to use their navigational skills as they press on through labyrinths of challenging puzzles. Some may be simple tests at manipulating the game’s environment to your advantage, while others much more difficult also requiring precision timing of moves, but each will be different and test you in new ways.

An Evolution in Franchise History
More than just a missing piece in the history of the God of War franchise, Chains of Olympus also serves as an evolutionary link between the origins of the God of War franchise and its future. Originally developed for PlayStation 2, the future of the franchise is slated to make its arrival on PlayStation 3 in the form of the highly anticipated God of War III in the not too distant future. Not only is PlayStation Portable designed to work in unison with PlayStation 3 in many ways, but both long-time fans and newcomers to the series who choose to watch and play Chains of Olympus carefully may very well pick up clues as to the direction the franchise will be heading in with God of War III.

Regardless, whether you find yourself playing for the current chapter in Kratos’ saga or preparing yourself for the battles to come on the PlayStation 3, God of War: Chains of Olympus is a must have title for any current owner of a PSP or those considering getting in the handheld game with one.

  • Oh my God of War

    By APOUYO1BEPK22 on 2008-03-13
When I saw that I had a package yesterday, I opened it up...and then nerd glee ran through my hands to my arms and then to my heart. Kratos had arrived.

I ran to my shop (actually I walked as fast as a grandma around a shopping mall) to open this tantalizing package of war. Screw work!! Actually I cant do that because I'm in Iraq and I have to get things done to help protect the troops. But once I was done with all the work for the day I popped the game in the PSP and hit the power button.

When I began to play, I couldnt believe the graphics. The PSP is seriously a PS2 in your hands. The game is just beautiful. The levels are nicely done. They even have the camera effect where it pulls out very far just to show you how small you really are compared to your surroundings. Your chains graphical effects look really good and even better as you upgrade them. Even the graphics for little things look great...for instance...when you open a chest under water, the chest begins to release thousands of tiny bubbles while you struggle to open it. I just thought that was a nice little touch.

The gameplay is incredible. Kratos is extremely easy to control. I'm just amazed at how fluid he moves. Bashing baddies...lifting them in the air...grappling them back onto the ground..and then finishing them off is nothing but a few well pressed buttons mashes. Not hard at all. And I'm not talking about the button sequence fighting either. Speaking of those, there are some really good ones in this game.

The sound is sharp and pleasing. The musical score can really put you in a mood to kill every living thing around...but then make you want to stop and smell the ashes of a burning hades. If you've played part 1 or 2, then you know what to expect with the sound effects, and it's here also. Sound great in my Bose Earbuds.

I have only a COUPLE of gripes about the game. I'm not completely done with it, but I can tell the game is going to be short. That's going to be a downer because I really like this game and just dont want it to end for at least 2 week..heh. Another gripe I have is that the game froze up on me once. Only once..so hopefully not again. Just make sure you save every time you get the chance.

Something that isnt a gripe, but a 'Just so ya know', playing on Normal is pretty dang easy. There are 4 modes...Easy, Normal, Hard, and God (which is greyed out at first). If you are pretty experienced with the game, I'd go with playing Hard.

Something parents should think about when pondering if they should get this game for their youngin. This game is based during when Rome was the hot spot. So when you see some of the female Gods, usually they are topless. Also there is a scene where Kratos frees two topless women and well...gets to have sex with them. You dont actually see it, but they show a vase or something rocking around while you hit a series of buttons to pleasure them both. Funny if you are older, but maybe not funny for parents with children.

All in all, I recommend this game completely for your PSP. It is definitely in my top 5 games for the PSP. That would include Ratchet and Clank, FF Tactics, Burnout Legends, and I dont have a 5th one yet..(it'll probably be the new Final Fantasy).

    UPDATE:

Well after beating the game about an hour after posting this review, I will say it's definitely a short game. Also make sure you stay for after the credits. Well...you'll have to because you cant skip cut scenes (which I LOATHE that you cant do it in any game).

  • Oh yeah baby, Kratos is finally here on the PSP

    By AJKWF4W7QD4NS on 2008-03-06
God of War stands as one of Sony's best original franchises, and now the vengeance-driven Kratos and his deadly chains have come to the PSP. Fans of the series will also be more than happy to know that God of War: Chains of Olympus stands as the best action title to hit Sony's portable system yet, as it nearly flawlessly brings everything that has made the God of War series so good, and packs it into one small disc. Taking place before the events of the original God of War, Chains of Olympus finds Kratos as general serving the gods, and also finds him struggling with obeying his orders, or doing what he feels he should. Undoubtedly the best looking game to hit the PSP yet, God of War: Chains of Olympus retains the excellent production values, addictive combat, tight controls, solid puzzle elements, and unlockable extras that will keep you glued to the game. The only real downside to Chains of Olympus is that as a whole, the game is too short. This one flaw is acceptable though, as Chains of Olympus boasts a brilliant score, more fantastic voice acting, and some dynamic action sequences that are easily the best to be seen on the PSP yet. All in all, God of War: Chains of Olympus is a more than welcome debut of Kratos on the PSP, and is by far the best action game to hit the PSP yet. Needless to say, if you own a PSP, God of War: Chains of Olympus is an absolute must own, and the definition of "killer app".

  • Good Job Amazon

    By A3PV80NSP1LZYT on 2008-03-05
HA! I preordered and they cant even deliver to me until March 10,11. Thanks for waiting until the ship date to inform us you don't have the game and then don't let us cancel the order. I have emailed and will see what response I get.

**Update: They let me cancel my order and I bought from BB locally. Now on to the game:

Graphically this game is awsome with some great effects and cut scenes. Has a great way of progressing you through levels and upgrades to Kratos. Definatly challenging and apart from Socom this is the only game on PSP i have completed. Great storyline and audio, a must have game for any psp owner. Downside: It is a little short in comparison to ps2 games from what I have heard. Took me a few days to conquer, still have hero mode to play so that will lead to more gametime. There are hardly any loadtimes and is very smooth. Screen becomes a little small in parts (It is a portable I know) because of the way they zoom the camera. Overall best game on psp yet. I highly recommend.

  • A Remarkable Game To Behold And The Greatest Game For The PSP!

    By A14966F0OZRUZ on 2008-03-14
Simply put, this is the best PSP game on the market and one of the most stunning handheld games ever made. The production value is through the roof. I have never played a handheld game that was of this caliber, if it were twice as long I would call it the single greatest achievement on any portable system.

From the moment I started the game, I was emotionally involved and I did not want to put the game down. I had not played the other GOW games, so this was all new to me... and I was hooked. The action was intense, but the puzzles were never complex.

The few issues that I had were with the length of the game, and the thumb pad, some fights hurt!

If you have a PSP, you have to play this game... I hope this is the harbinger of the future for the PSP, because it proves that Sony's little console is quite something!

  • God of War: Chains of Olympus.........

    By A3GKMQFL05Z79K on 2008-03-05
Sad but true, I've never played God of War before. I've heard so much about the game and, considering it has David Jaffe's involvement in its' history, you'd think I'd have already played it. Alas, I haven't. Yet, I see the commercial on tv for this game and hear rantin' & ravin' from my friends about the game, I decide to get the PSP installment. Man (or Woman, whatever the case may be..;)), I was missing out on this for this long?? This game blew me away. It's exciting, addictive and challenging. God of War: Chains of Olympus is simply put 'the best looking title' on the system, bar none, yet. I've never seen graphics look quite this good on the system. Honestly. If graphics can get any better than this on the PSP, I'll be amazed. The environments were simply breathtaking, nothing like I've seen before. Course, Ready At Dawn made Daxter visually appealing for its' time.

For an action game, this game truly delivers. Especially where the story is concerned. Makes me wish some developers would make portable versions of some of my favorite games(like Shadowman, Bloodrayne, Legacy of Kain or Devil May Cry).

There's plenty of bonus content in the game that makes playing through a few times more appealing but I have a problem with the game's length. It is just too short for this kind of game. I managed to get through it in a little over 8 hours. It is, however, a portable game so I have to take that into account. Memory restrictions and whatnot, withstanding, it should be understood.

God of War: Chains of Olympus is a remarkable achievement on the PSP. It's a 'must-have' purchase for all owners of a PSP. This game just goes to prove that Ready At Dawn is a force to be reckoned with in the handheld world. I'm expecting great things from this bunch on their next game.

  • Pretty good...
    By A4W5KS314Q4VC on 2008-03-18
Of course this game is good- hell, it's God of War. But, but but but... the game is pretty short. As most will tell you, the storyline is pretty weak. But all in all, it's pretty awesome. GOW 1 was, in my opinion, the best. GOW 2 had the best storyline, but the levels weren't as good as the first. Plus, GOW 2 was shorter than the first.

But, as for the PSP version, if you like GOW (if you don't then you hate video games and puppies) then I say buy it- if you have a PSP. GOW 3 is coming out on PS3, which sucks because the writers are basically telling you to go buy a PS3. Don't get me wrong, it's cool that it's on PS3, but like other games (i.e. WWE games) I think they should ALSO release GOW 3 on PS2. Like most people, I have bills, etc. to pay so I really don't have money to run out and blow on a PS3- especially for one game.

In conclusion, I think if God of War never came out until PSP, this would be a 5-star- but since we've seen what God of War can do, I can't give it a 5 star. Very good game, though, but still lacking in places. The Gauntlet Glove and Efreet are friggon amazong thought.... :)

  • The Spartan is on the PSP - PREPARE FOR GLORY!
    By A1C139F5C7Y38P on 2008-03-08
Well, it's been a long time coming, but Kratos has made his way to the small screen of our PSP's, and it was well worth waiting for!

From the description of the game on Amazon, it talks about epic gameplay on the PSP - but Chains of Olympus does more than this...it makes me forget that I'm playing on a PSP! Why? Because the graphics are absolutely breathtaking! The camera angles are a perfect match to the Playstation 2 counterparts of God of War and God of War 2.

In a nutshell, you get to follow along with Kratos in his forced servitude to the Olympian Gods.

There are a lot of combat moves, most of which are transfers from the other God of War games...but had to be changed with the lack of a second analog stick. Surprisingly, after a few hours of playing, you won't even notice because you adapt to the gameplay quickly. There are new weapons to power up, but the good ol' Blades of Chaos are right where they belong, in Kratos' hot little hands.

The boss battles are excellent. However, some of them will take a little intuition to figure out exactly how to defeat them, but hey, that's what God of War is all about...try, try again while slicing and dicing!

As far as the puzzle solving goes, some are definitely easier than others. Anyone familiar with the first 2 God of War games or Resident Evil should be able to figure out most of the puzzles without too much difficulty.

My only gripe about the game: As other reviewers have mentioned, it takes about 7 to 8 hours to solve it, and the PSP battery will not last anywhere near that long. But even if you run out of juice, you can plug the PSP in to recharge, and you'll pick up right where the game left off!

This is one of the best features of the PSP, being able to turn the unit off and pick up the gameplay when we're ready to.

With the unlockable content, advanced gameplay and extra costumes, God of War: Chains of Olympus is a MUST HAVE for the PSP.

Eat well, Spartan...FOR TONIGHT WE DINE IN HELL!!!

  • Lots of fun, while it lasts.
    By A37H0928X7SMEK on 2008-05-12
I am a PSP fan/apologist, but I dwell primarily in the genre of RPGs. When I heard that God of War was coming to the system, I was interested as Ready At Dawn created thoughtful, quality products in the first two games and I wanted to see what they would do on the small screen.

Having watched the first two GoWs played by my more-dexterous and action game-favoring little brother, my biggest concern was that I would not be able to master the controls. I was pleasantly surprised by the demo and the final product that despite not having the background in action games that he does I was still able to pick it up and really make progress. Others have complained that the various items and combat skills you pick up are fairly meaningless when most creatures go down with enough button mashing, but up the sort of person who likes to vary my attacks in the name of being flashy and cool so this didn't bother me too much. Visually the game really comes through - the lag and long loading times you might expect from an action game on the PSP really aren't there (though they aren't non-existent either). There is enough going on in levels to keep you challenged but also make you feel like you are constantly moving, never stuck.

My biggest complain with the game has to be length. About two-thirds of the way through the game it became clear that my current mission for the gods was to be my only mission - there are no hidden levels, nothing particularly cool to unlock except for challenges and costumes, which in my mind do not constitute content. I knew not to expect much from the story but the shortness of it made the meaninglessness of the plot more conspicuous. A mission-based system (Find this idol! Assist in this war! Take on this lesser god/goddess! Subdue that beast!) might have been more palatable. As it is, I beat this game in a weekend, and ended up selling it within a week because there was nothing about the challenges or replaying the game in a harder mode that excited me enough to hold onto it. I would go into the experience of playing it with that in mind - you're going to have fun slashing though gods and constructs with Kratos, but the ride is going to come to a stop all too soon.

  • Bought the PSP just for this...
    By A3G2G872VHVJMA on 2008-05-22
Like so many, I'm just one more GOW fan--and though I have nothing new to say about the game that someone else hasn't already, I can offer one more voice to the choir for the proverbial singing of praises towards this game.

Yes, the graphics are absolutely beautiful. No, I've never owned a PSP before buying this game but I have seen plenty of games displayed on the portable units of others. This is definitely the best I've seen thus far.
Other reviewers have noted that while playing, the presentation was so spectacular that they forget they were playing on a PSP...I too became immediately oblivious to what I was holding in my hands.

The music? Of course, it was excellent. As we came to expect no less after our first go-around with Kratos as well as the fantastic sequel, the sound quality along with the musical score in Chains of Olympus undoubtedly sets the bar that will find rival designers and studios struggling hard to emulate.

The story was short and the characters lack the depth and scope compared to those in GOW1 & GOW2--but I was prepared for that. Thanks to the other helpful reviews, I didn't work myself up to naively think this was going to be the same type of gaming experience the PS2 predecessors afforded, but compared to the other PSP games out there (which is, in fact, a more fair comparison), and as attested by many, many, many PSP gamers--this is a knockout!!

So there you go, thanks to God of War:Chains of Olympus, I'm just one more happy fan of Kratos...and a PSP noob. (Compliments to Sony for finding so many ways to take so much of my money...can't wait until I have to shell out even more to buy a PS3 for GOW3 [Sigh]...oh well.)

  • A Great Achievement for the PSP....
    By A8NEDUHWEK9YU on 2008-03-08
This is the best game for PSP right now (I think Crisis Core will be better) I just finished the game (credits are still rolling) and I must say, while it is a great game, and God of War for a handheld is nothing short of a miracle (considering what garbage the PSP has had in its day) I just felt like it was missing a lot from the first 2 parts for the ps2.

The first thing that disappointed me were the bosses. I'm not going to spoil anything here, but to me the bosses didnt seem as vast or as well planned out for this version compared to the PS2 versions. The biggest disappoint for me was the fact that I beat the game in 7 hours. It took me a while to beat God of War 1 when I first played through it, and I guess I was expecting the same for Chains of Olympus. There isnt much swimming or underwater puzzles/exploration, so I was kinda disappointed in that as well as the controls being a bit tricky at points, but those are minute in the big picture.

I felt like getting the negativity out of the way. I do know why the game is only 7 hours long. It looks pretty darn similar to the GoW for PS2. The camera, at times, is a pain, but when the camera zooms in/out when youre walking down the bridge or walking against the wall to get through a tight space, it totally reminds you of the first 2 GoW's and you marvel in the glory of this game. With the whole control scheme of PS2 basically using all of the buttons, I would like to commend Ready at Dawn for their choice of controls in this game. Nothing like I would have expected. Some of the puzzles in the game definitely make you think outside of the box, and may frustrate folks who have not played the series before, but pretty moderate for GoW vets.

This game goes above and beyond what I thought the PSP was capable of. The game is beautiful, the sound is beautiful, and the load times are almost non existent. I would HIGHLY recommend this game to anyone who has a PSP as it is the best game out there for it at the moment. I know I'm going to catch some slack for it, but I gave it 4 stars ( really I would have liked to give 4.5 but you cant do it on amazon)because it was really short and for 40 dollars I can purchase one of many games that are 40-60 hours. Now I need to wait for GoW 3 and I hope they blow the first 2 out of the water with that one.

  • Will definately make you a Kratos fan
    By AU9SZZSTDNGMD on 2008-05-15
I gotta say this game is awesome. as soon as i started playing it, I was hooked. The graphics and display are great. The story line and movie scenes are fantastic. If you're a Zelda and/or a castlevania fan, then you have to play God of War. I admit that God of War for the PSP is the first one i've played (Since i'm a soldier in iraq it's the only thing i have) so i'm a newly found Kratos fan. So much that i went ahead and bought God of War 1 and 2 for PS2. which i can't wait to play when i get back home. but for now, i'm still hooked on this one.
Even after you beat the game, it's a must to play again with the new unlocked character. which only makes you want to play until all characters and features are unlocked. A must for your PSP collection.

  • Like fireworks: Looks great, exciting for a while, but fizzles out quickly
    By A1N8PNDWBIQ578 on 2008-08-25
I got the PSP God of War Entertainment Pack - Red as a warranty replacement for my original PSP Daxter Entertainment Pack - Ice Silver. I was looking forward to playing Chains of Olympus, as this was my first experience with the series. I own a PS2, but never bothered to pick up the two console God of War titles.

I've played several PSP games now, and Chains of Olympus LOOKS great. It's possibly the best-looking game for PSP, and as a result, it's a shame that Ready at Dawn will not be making any more for the system. However, that's just about all Chains of Olympus has going for it.

The storyline is sub-par, combining a weak understanding of Greek mythology with a tired tale of deception and revenge. However, this is an action game, so story can be overlooked somewhat in favor of actual gameplay quality. The game is fun for a while, but as you progress through the game you earn spells, most of which are useless, new moves and a new weapon. Once you obtain these, certain moves can be repeatedly spammed to kill just about everything, including bosses. At this point, the fun of the game slowly dies as this formulaic strategy nearly always works and is practically required to beat God mode, the highest difficulty. There is no penalty for dying in the game, which is good, but before almost every boss fight there is an cutscene that can't be skipped. On higher difficulties, this becomes very irritating, as it may take several strategies before you figure out the boss' Achilles heel.

On completing the game, which takes 4-6 hours at most, you earn God mode and can take on special challenges that are at best repetitive and frustrating and at worst mindlessly easy. Beating the challenges and the hardest difficulty unlock new costumes and a small amount of behind-the-scenes content, very little of which is worth suffering through the same horrible plot and repetitive gameplay for, not to mention that you would then have to play through the game a third time to enjoy the new costumes. I felt no compulsion to replay the game a third time, and I only played a second time so I could unlock everything.

Anything below God mode difficulty (the hardest) is quite easy, and God mode simply requires you to perform the same moves over and over again with better precision and timing than before. Some of the challenges are also difficult, but there isn't much of a sense of accomplishment after beating the hard ones, as all you typically need to do is find out which special move fits the situation best and use it over and over again, just like in the actual game. The game itself also contains a few puzzles, but for students of action/adventure games with more difficult 3D puzzles, such as any recent installment of the Legend of Zelda series, they're trivial and hardly worth mentioning, useful only to break up the action.

I don't think there's any reason to buy this game until it's in the bargain bin, or at the very least in the Greatest Hits series. Better yet, rent it and in a week you'll get everything out of the game you could possibly want. With no online play and very limited unlockables, the game's replay value is near nonexistent. I'm glad I got it as a pack-in rather than paying full price for it.

It's also worth mentioning, for those with no familiarity with the series, that this is not a game parents should be purchasing for young children. The brutal violence and small amount of nudity didn't turn me off at all, but could be a bit disturbing for kids.

  • God of War rocks!
    By A3PF6Y91T4BH6W on 2008-03-05
I was able to get a demo disc a few weeks back and it absolutely rocks. The graphics is stunning, full of hardcore action and the gameplay is as addictive as the first god-of-war for ps2.

Glad I decided to keep my psp. Preordered this game months ago and been waiting ever since.

  • The God of War Returns!
    By A3NZXGU52VUQC9 on 2008-03-18
To be honest I have been a bit disappointed with games on the PSP. I've tried several and found the controls cumbersome and clumsy. I actually recently purchased my PSP more for its multi-media functions and Wi-Fi Capabilities. I have been a huge GoW fan since the 1st game on PS2 and was very skeptical about playing it on the PSP; I however I could not resist the call of Kratos. Sony did not disappoint. Playing Chains of Olympus on the PSP so much like playing GoW on the PS2, I fear for my "O" button. The graphics are simply amazing for the PSP. I find the only noticeable difference is the smaller screen. The environments are just as rich and the action just as intense. I have fought about 2 bosses so far and look forward to losing many hours delivering the message of the gods with wraith of my blades.

  • A great addition to the series
    By A3ANSM3DSYC1F1 on 2008-03-07
God of War: Chains of Olympus is the most recent installment of the venerable God of War series, and the first time the title has graced the PSP. God of war is set in a psuedo Greek mythology. There, the main character - a hyper masculine Spartan warrior named Kratos AKA Ghost of Sparta AKA God of War who killed his wife and daughter in a bloodfrenzy - sets forth on a herculean task involving direct contact and often conflict with the gods and titans themselves. Gameplay is a successful mix of twitch based and buttonmashing. Themes and content are adult oriented, featuring topless women, implied sexual activity and innuendo, extreme violence and blood.

I tempered my excitement for a the possibility of a great action game on the system with the knowledge that some good titles have had rocky transitions across from the Playstation to it's portable counterpart. Graphics and control can become insufferable when brought to a portable. Admittedly, I had a demo disk to help soothe those concerns, but I couldn't be certain until the full game was in my hot little hands.

Despite my concerns I preordered my copy, and in my excitement I mistakenly showed up a day early at my local game shop to pick it up.

    Controls:
All fears are immediately allayed. The control scheme is picked up quickly and is very much old hat for veteran God of War players. I expect that players new to the series will find the controls intuitive and relatively easy to get accustomed to. You will make use of every button on the machine, but it is never cumbersome, the game responds beautifully. You will be an graceful cyclone of death in short order.

    Graphics:
While I can't claim to have seen all titles for the PSP or even all the action titles, I can say Chains of Olympus likely meets or exceeds the best gamers have encountered on the system. The detail that you can pick up on the small screen is very impressive, and at no point did I feel I was visually constrained by the environment. The game used huge zoom outs typical in previous titles to the same great effect. Camera angles were a little quirky at times, I found that I would often loose sight of my enemies on the bottom of the screen. This was only problematic when the enemy had a charge or projecile attack.

    Story:
The story is set prior to the other titles, but after the murder of his wife and daughter. The timeline is a bit shakey there as I thought the first God of War took off immediately after he killed his family thus becoming the Ghost of Sparta, but my memory is a bit fuzzy. I'll be throughly vague as to the details because there is typically just enough story in these games to move the carnage along. Something has gone terribly wrong that threatens the fate of the world. Kratos has been tasked by the gods to set things back in order, much to his chagrin. It follows the same formula as the other games in the series, of "Who do I have to beat clues out of next", but before you can start giving this any honest thought, you're rending enemies limb from limb again. It was a good mix of carnage to story for the genre though, and the journey through the story was an enjoyable one.

    Miscellanea:
The UI is exactly the same as the previous titles. The goals for collecting the Gorgon eyes and the Pheonix feathers to increase your HP and MP is the same. There is a secondary weapon called Zeus' Fist, that is fun to use and powerful in many situations. There are multiple spells that are all typical fare with the series. Collecting orbs for upgrades still there, all of the old attacks are still there, in short - nothing has really changed except the platform.

I'm not one to race to the end as I have a job and kids and tend to play after the kids go to bed, but I completed the game within about 8 hours of play. The shortness of the game has been tempered somewhat by unlockables. Upon completion of the game you unlock several other features of the game. You unlock "God Mode" which is the maximum difficulty. Various "Hades Challenges" become available to complete sequentially, each one unlocking the next challenge. Various videos and other odds and ends also become available. Ultimately completing the game felt rewarding, which I would expect is the goal. I suspect as I start through God Mode and undertake the challenges of Hades I should be able to stretch the game out a bit longer.

If you are a fan of the God of War series, you will almost certainly enjoy Chains of Olympus. New players who enjoy the theme or the style will likely find themselves looking for the old titles to get the full story. The violence is over the top and it's treatment of women may be viewed as misogynist as is the rest of the series. Those who are looking for a game for young children or find that this subject matter offends your sensibility should look elsewhere. All said, I am happy with the game, and would recommend it to friends, but won't loan out my copy because Hades second challenge is already kicking my butt.

  • Fantastic franchise!
    By A38O4FPZOIVS49 on 2008-03-08
I've played with many PSP games including the Syphon Filter franchise, GOW has to be one of the best out there. The graphics, music and game play is top notch.

I'm about half way through the game. I'm playing the easy level and would suggest people choose the normal level to start as easy is too easy.

Let's hope they bring out other series soon, including a PS3 version!

  • outstanding, but short
    By A1S28QB8SQKM8H on 2008-03-09
this gow game for psp is outstanding but to short, i started playing the game on thursday when i went to pick up my reservation and by saturday evening i finished the game. if it was a little longer like the other gow games it would have been sweet. there were some parts in the game where i got stuck and with some exploration i figured out the solutions to many puzzles.

  • GOD of War COO THE BEST!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
    By AX0GU7TXCYPFX on 2008-03-10
I cannot believe how this little PSP does it!!! I have a question or request!?!?!Will the guys that made God of War 1,2 and the prequel teach all other software teams how to make games like this!!!! Incredible detail, hardly any loading times, great music, no slow down in action speed and cinematic cut sequences!!!! I still cant believe how good this game is!!!

The controls are excellent and the game play and puzzle solving is ridiculous!!! I did have to run around in a few levels to find my way out but that only took about 30 minutes and its because I didn't look around after I pulled the wall out. =)

I simply love this game. The only thing is I see this coming to an end pretty soon but I will probably pop in the Spartan level and go back at it!!!

  • god of war
    By AI9HMPCXGI8C8 on 2008-03-11
this is a really good game but they should of made it a 2 disc set to make it feel like and seem like its longer and have it continue on to the second disc and and on the second disc that would of make it alot better because 40 bucks is alot of money for a short game but its worth it for god of war dont get me wrong just next time developers think next time befor you make a game guys please thank you spartans prepare for glory

  • WAAAY too short
    By A1XYDYDH5PRPAO on 2008-03-14
This is the first time I've ever been compelled to actually create a review of something on Amazon. And this one will be short and to the point.

I'm a big fan of the God of War series. I've loved the previous two PS2 games. I would give this game a solid 5 stars for its actual content. (Though I sure wish they allow camera control in this series.) However, I was utterly disappointed by the fact that I had completed the game in only about 10 hours of playtime, on Hero (Normal) level. I may go back and try it on the God (very difficult) level, but I've already seen everything, so I don't know if the urge is really there.

In short, this game unfortunately falls well shy of the "killer app" status that it was supposed to achieve because it can be finished in 3-4 short sessions, or one really long one, I suppose. The short duration of the game keeps me from being able to rate it 5 stars. In fact, I'd probably drop it to 3.5 if that were possible.

Please be aware of this when you're ready to shell out your cash, and know what you're getting.

  • IS TOO SHORT
    By A2R9F0RMN29QBO on 2008-03-18
I FINISH THIS GAME IN 2 HOURS OF GAME PLAY IS TOO EASY AND TOO SHORT. THE GRAPHICS ARE GOOD BUT I LIKE GAMES WITH MORE PLAY TIME. IF I`M GOIN TO SPEND 45 OR 50 DOLARS ON A GAME AT LEAST I WANT 6 OR 8 HOURS OF GAME PLAY WITHOUT GET BORING PLAYING.

  • The power of the Gods in your hand.
    By A3NM1I571IVU6 on 2008-03-23
I must say this game shows great examples of scale; when your fighting colossal reptiles to climbing a massive cliff in the heart of Tartarus you feel the sense of power the environs emit. I'm not gonna lie, I initially strayed form the God of War franchise for awhile. Chains of olympus is the first GoW game I've played simply because I own a PSP. Man have I been missing out since God of War first came out for the PS2. Thankfully Chains is a prequel to both God of war and God of war 2! The action and violence in this game is comparable to Ninja Gaiden for the XBOX. Blood splattering and demon slaying from start to finish with this game. You can chain all kinds of brutal combos with weapons like Zuess' gauntlet and of course the blades of Chaos. I couldn't really follow the story much, every level has alot going on regardless if your trying to figure out a puzzle something in the backround is happening. I have to reccomend this game to any die-hard action fan or gamer in general. The only thing wrong besides a camera that can sometimes get funky on ya' is the fact that the game is WAAAY to short. Beat it in a few days :(

  • A masterpiece
    By A19LIZ6J3YY6GX on 2008-03-25
I was unfamilier with the other GoW games and bought it because of all the positive reviews. I was not disappointed, and I am not a FPS gamer at all. The graphics are top-notch, and even if you are uncoordinated you should be able to slug through on the easy level with no problems at all. Then you'll want to go back and replay the game at a higher level once you've got your skills perfected. If you are an expert at these games God mode should have you busy for a while.

There is no reason not to add the game to your collection. I really doubt the reviewers that claim they can complete the game in less than 4 hours, there are a lot of puzzles to solve, some that will have you scratching your head, but they are a nice break in the action.

It's a pefectly balanced game, with great graphics, great plot, dead-on controls. I wouldn't change a thing. You won't be dissapointed in this game.

  • This is why you buy a PSP
    By ALC6LWQXBHIPG on 2008-03-26

So what are my impressions with God of War? Well I am now about 3/4 of the way thru and I must say that I am impressed. I never really got a chance to GoW on the PS2 and now I am seeing what I am missing. The controls are tight and doesn't take a lot of getting used to. The graphic are excellent for a portable device and not a lot of clipping can be seen. I even have a cable that runs to my HDTV and it's not bad at all. The storyline with Kratos helping the gods and trying to atone for murdering his family is so far done well as the voice acting...this game may convince me to get a PS2 so that I can play the orginals and get the full story. If I have any complaints about the game so far is that altho rare, some of the puzzles are not so obvious to solve (but then it wouldn't be a puzzle right? LOL) or better to say that difficulty raises and drops during the game. Also, sometimes it get difficult to find your correct path even when soem paths need you to double back. But otherwise, this is really one of the best games on the PSP right now and probably the reason why a lot more will be sold. On a sacle of 1 to 5 it get 4.5 stars.

  • Choosing quality over quantity is not always a bad thing
    By A2TVRGZ7IERH7T on 2008-04-29
There is hardly a moment that goes by that isn't filled with intense action or mind blowing eye candy. It may be a little shorter than other games, but the overall experience is highly refined and memorable, and you could easily play this game 2 or 3 times. There are only a few "boss" battles, but this shouldn't be a problem for most people. There is plenty of huge and wild stuff jumping out at you throughout the game, and many of the enemies feel like bosses. The musical score is rich, and the sound effects pack a solid punch. The only complaint I have is for the voice acting and story. The voice acting is a little hokey, and the story is a little thin, but neither were bad enough to spoil the experience. Overall, God of War is one of the best games I've ever played. I highly recommend it.

  • Excellent graphics but there are not different things to do only kill enemies and collect things
    By A3HHM67KZVCMTY on 2008-05-09
I hope more about this game. It has a excellent graphic and scenarios but you cannot go everywhere only to designated areas. There are not really to do, only kill enemies and get light balls. Dexter is really better and interesting to play.

  • Almost perfect!
    By A20P02OV4H3HP8 on 2008-05-15
Awesome game! Probably the best for the PSP. The only 'con' I would say is that the game is a bit short.

  • Good Gory Fun
    By A2HZ1CSWXDMFCU on 2008-08-14
Summary: God of War: Chains of Olympus has you playing as Kratos, one of the beastliest men ever to walk on the face of the earth. Take down a Basilisk, punish a God, subdue a Titan and more in this epic journey set in ancient Greece. In addition to visually impressive pre-rendered cutscenes, this game boasts some of the best graphics I've seen on the PSP so far. The gameplay is insane, with moves that defy gravity and powerful magical spells. The game even has some puzzles for you to solve, in addition to intense button-mashing sequences which just might wear down your PSP buttons. The story is short, but hey- quality over quantity. Ready at Dawn studios has made some great games for the PSP, but this one takes the cake.

    Gameplay - Five Stars
This has got to be on of the most fun games I've every played on the PSP. There are just so many ways to take down your opponents. But don't think that it's a walk in the park; some Boss Fights are extremely challenging and parts of the game can be frustrating. When you kill enemies, you get red orbs which can be used to upgrade your magic, and learn new moves. The game also gives you fun puzzles to solve, which involve a bit of thinking, but nothing frustrating.

    Story - Five Stars
If I could use one word to describe it, it would be: Epic. This story will unless you hate fighting gods, or taking down a Titan, then you'll love it. I did, and as you can see from all these other reviews, they did too. I won't reveal the storyline, but remember: epic.

    Online Play - Nonexistent
You don't honestly expect online play for a game like this, do you?

    Final Verdict - Five Stars
Let me tell you, I beat this game three times. And all three times, it was worth every minute. This game keeps you on your toes. Yes, what everyone says is true, it's short. But as before mentioned, quality gameplay over quantity.

  • Trying this game has brought me back...way back!
    By A3EZZZKAGFG5NZ on 2008-08-24
I am in my late twenties and as a High School scholar, I used to play games like Battle Axe for the Seaga Genesis and Mortal Combat 1, 2, 3 and 4. I used to be a hardcore game-head. I stopped playing video games for about 10 years and decided to buy myself a PSP (for portability and cool graphics). I heard of God of War after much research and figured I should try it, since so many people like it. I wanted to get Final Fantasy, but wasn't impressed with what I saw on the package (still haven't seen gameplay) so I bought God of War - Chains of Olympus. I was disappointed at first when my memory card would not allow me to save my progress. This got me frustrated and so I changed the memory card and it worked fine.
I must admit, the game is pretty short, but I don't regret it. The graphics and the cinematography, the music and the mini-scenes made this game the top game in my list.
If you are looking to buy a game that is fun for adults, then this game is the one for you. It has very graphic scenes and the creators focused on the most gruesome killing possible and emphasized just that.
In the end I was pleased with my purchase and would buy part 3 in a heartbeat!
