Excellent workaround for PS3 limitation By A267RZGUQ6KM2L on 2007-07-18
The Playstation 3 uses RF (bluetooth) for its wireless remotes. This is great for a game remote, but less convenient for a BluRay player remote, since it makes it incompatible with universal remotes, which communicate using infrared (IR). Sony sells a DVD-style remote, but it also works by RF. Unlike the XBox 360, which uses RF for its controllers but includes an IR port for DVD player style remotes, the PS3 has no IR sensor at all.
However, there is a workaround, because the PS3 also supports wired controllers via its USB ports (which is also how you recharge the controllers). Nyko has cleverly taken advantage of this by producing an IR remote that emulates the USB wired controller. You simply plug a USB dongle with an IR sensor into one of the USB ports, and then you can use the Nyko IR remote--or a Harmony remote, if you teach it the commands from the Nyko.
This works quite well. There are some inherent limitations, however. In particular, this approach means that the Nyko remote is only able to support the commands that you can execute with the PS3 controller, and does not provide some of the additional commands available on the PS3 bluetooth remote. So no power key, angle key, or eject key. But it does emulate all of the digital controls of the PS3 controller (i.e. everything but the analog sticks), which makes it fine for controlling the player. I don't mind the lack of a power control as I leave my PS3 on all the time anyway, since it isn't noisy like the XBox 360, and I have set it to donate unused computing power to the Folding@home scientific project. And if I'm going to eject a disk, I have to walk over to get it anyway, so I might as well push the button on the PS3.
I had good success teaching the Nyko's IR commands to a Harmony universal remote. This mostly went well, although the square command seems to be difficult to learn properly, and took a couple of dozen takes to get it right.
My Harmony 676 now controls the PS3 By A18040Z0FZY61C on 2007-09-08
After having used a Harmony 676 to control all my devices, I was not happy when I needed to use the PS3 controller to control Blu Ray movie watching.
This remote's dongle does the job in letting my Harmony 676 control the PS3. There was one problem that almost led me to return the remote however, and I wanted to mention the solution here.
Problem (for Harmony remotes):
On the PS3 XMB (Cross Media Bar), the directional buttons would move the selection several spots for each key press. I read several posts and tried teaching & re-teaching the Harmony. I tried teaching using the "Raw" IR learning but that would slow down the response from the PS3 to each key press.
Solution:
Within the Harmony program, go to Devices->PS3 and select "troubleshoot" under device options.
Select "Show me more problems" (last choice).
Then select the choice "PS3 doesn't appear to receive every command correctly," and the select "The device responds too much to some commands (for example, volume up increases the volume too quickly)."
In the screen with the radio buttons, select '0'.
Save & update the remote and everything the directional buttons will work perfectly.
Great, but only if you want universal remote functionality By AZTM2VXPJ5P72 on 2007-08-06
If you are simply buying a remote for your PS3 to play Bluray disk do not buy this remote. Buy the authentic bluetooth remote that Sony makes and it's control is superior and flawless. This remote's advantage is you can use the USB dongle included to make your PS3 accept commands from a universal remote control such as Harmony.
So if you want a remote to control your Bluray watching, but you insist on using your universal remote for everything this is the ticket. (one remote to control everything) Just attach the USB dongle to your PS3, and then learn the commands from the Blu Wave remote to your Harmony or other universal remote and you're good to go.
Edit 09/04/2008: While I did love how the Blu Wave remote allowed me to use my universal remote it is not without its problems and limitations. It cannot turn on/off the PS3, and often it sends commands twice when browsing through the menus which can be very frustrating. I've now upgraded to the PS3IR-PRO which is a little black box that takes the IR commands from your remote and resends them out via Bluetooth exactly like the official Sony remote commands. This makes usage flawless and you also get all 51 buttons on the official Sony Bluetooth remote, I love it. It also allows you to turn on and off the PS3 with one button that can be programmed into your universal remote. It does cost approximately $100, but its a far superior product. Ultimately your choice depends on your specific needs.
No Power Button!!! By AU8HAFT4VJY53 on 2007-07-13
Buyer Beware: This remote does not have a way to turn your PS3 on/off.
I know what you're thinking... All I need is the USB dongle and I can program my universal remote to control Blu-ray movies. You're almost right. Unfortunately, this remote does not have a way to turn your PS3 on/off. So, you're either leaving your PS3 on all the time (feasible if you're doing the @Home thing), or you're still reaching for your Bluetooth controller/remote to turn the PS3 on when you want to watch a flick.
I gave the unit 2 stars as it does what it advertises ("Control playback of Blu-ray movies, DVDs, and CDs). But, due to the lack of a power (PS) button, I feel that most potential buyers may not be interested.
Much like the recently released Pelican controller adapter, this is a crippled product that is one feature short of being a must buy for users (rumble being the missing Pelican feature). Both of these items have added functionality to my entertainment center, but neither provide a complete solution or allow me to discard other equipment.
Make an informed decision when purchasing.
Easy to configure for Harmony Remote By A1TA53FE8GJTYI on 2008-01-05
I recently purchased this product to allow me to control my PS3 for DVD playback using my Harmony remote (model 880). Many others have also purchased the Blu-Wave for the same purpose, but it appears as most have programmed their Harmony by having it "learn" the Blu-Wave's remote codes. I found a much easier way to get the Harmony remotes programmed.
Just add a new device "Game Console (with DVD)". Select the Manufacture of Nyko and enter "Blu-Wave" as the Model (they actually give you an example of what to enter for Model and that is the model they use for their example). Complete adding the device, with no other changes. Then update or create the "Watch a DVD" activity and specify the new device as your DVD player. I found that I had to tweak some of the button settings, but most of button were set correctly.
As others have stated, I wish Nyko had provided some of the other buttons that appear on the Sony remote (Eject, Angles, ...) and at least a way to turn off the PS3 (like the PS button).
- A must if you use a universal remote
     By A2JLPMOIWTKHZA on 2007-07-23
I purchased this to use my Harmony universal remote to watch movies on the PS3, and for that it works perfectly well. Why Sony couldnt simply put an IR port on the thing...
As the other reviewer highlighted, this does not support the "PS" button (maybe the controller sends a unique IFF for pairing?), but normally to watch a movie, I just stick the disk in to turn on the PS3 and autostart the film, and when its over walk up to take the disk out and turn it off at the same time. To eliminate the dedicated remote, this is a small price for me:)
The Harmony software does not include this in its db, so I had it learn the keys. This is fiddly, but the Harmony software is very good at walking you through.
The usb dongle seems large at first, but when you plug it into the PS3, its about the same length as the PS'3 front overhang, so it doesnt stick out that much or risk being snapped off. It does stick out enough for downwards IR coverage.
Another point I was struck by is that this remote is alot simpler than the official Sony remote, with about half the buttons, and the key ones like Play/Pause are bigger. This would make this a very good alternative to the Sony for people who dont want or need the zillion little buttons.
- Relief for universal remote lovers
     By AG22VA23F3ZTE on 2008-06-27
With the acquisition of my Harmony 880 universal remote a while back, I was finally able to get rid of the stack of remotes that used to clutter my end table. That is, until I got a PS3. Since getting the game machine, I've had to keep a second bluetooth remote next to my Harmony. This was due to the fact that the PS3 does not include any sort of IR control capability.
The Nyko Blu Wave is a very satisfactory solution for the lack of IR controllability for the PS3. It allows play/pause, forward/rewind, skip, menu access, etc. Pretty much everything you need for video playback on the PS3.
There are a couple of things lacking. Most notably, the Nyko Blu Wave lacks power on/off and eject capability. I would bet that this is a design limitation of the PS3 USB interface, so there likely will never be an IR-via-USB solution that would be able to offer this sort of functionality.
Getting my Harmony 880 configured was a cinch. Under the "add device" menu, I selected "Game Console (with DVD)", "Nyko" as the manufacturer and entered "Blu-Wave" as the model. The key repeat rates, etc., needed to navigate around PS3's XMB seem to work well, so no tweaking of the advanced settings on my Harmony was necessary.
If you're looking for a stand-alone remote for your PS3, I recommend the Sony PlayStation 3 Blu-ray Disc Remote instead of this one. With the Sony remote you can power the PS3 on or off, eject disks and directly access other functionality your PS3 supports during playback.
Pros:
* Enough functionality for XMB navigation and video/DVD/Blu-ray playback
* Gives my universal remote the control I was craving
* Simple, compact design of the remote
* USB IR dongle is small and discreet
Cons:
* Lacking power on/off and eject capability
* Unlike Sony's remote, line of sight required between remote and USB IR dongle
- Works well for Harmony 880
     By A7H1Y9ET78A1E on 2008-02-08
Thanks to the following tips from other Reviewers, it works like a champ. Like many others, I am using it with a Harmony 880 and I don't care if I can't turn the power on or off. You have to get up to get the disc anyway so who cares. But the command where I ask one of my kids to please get the disk and put it away seems to not work very well:)
To Eject a disk;
Press 'Stop' to stop the movie and get back to the main menu. I think you need to press the 'O' button and then 'yes' after stopping the movie. You should be at the location where the DVD icon is highlighted. Press the triangle button and an eject disk command will appear to the right of the screen. Select this and it will eject. So you could probably get it to work by programming a macro button. But this is not a big deal to me since I want to get the disk and just press the button on the PS3.
Very Helpful Tip #1 from a previous reviewer:
Just add a new device "Game Console (with DVD)". Select the Manufacture of Nyko and enter "Blu-Wave" as the Model (they actually give you an example of what to enter for Model and that is the model they use for their example). Complete adding the device, with no other changes. Then update or create the "Watch a DVD" activity and specify the new device as your DVD player. I found that I had to tweak some of the button settings, but most of button were set correctly.
Very Helpful Tip #2 from a previous reviewer:
Both were very helpful to me. Thanks!
- Great remote to use for Harmony or other universal remotes
     By AQ45L6L74SENG on 2007-08-08
I bought this product just so that I can use my Harmony remote to control the PS3. I had no intention of using the remote that came with this, just the USB to IR dongle. I connected the dongle and used the included remote to learn all the commands into my Harmony. Now the PS3 is fully integrated into my Harmony using this dongle. I can do pretty much everything. I had to tweak the Harmony timing a little bit to reduce the sensitivity since I had menu skipping in the default setting. Also, you cannot power on/off the PS3 using this remote since USB is not powered during standby. That is not a problem for me since I go near the PS3 to put or eject a disk anyway. I turn it on/off at that time. Great buy from Amazon. I got it for $13.99 when they first introduced the product.
- Control Freak?
     By A2H59D2RFHT0PS on 2007-11-24
Ok, here's the scenario. You have 10 A/V components, each with a dedicated remote. To bring sanity to your family, you pony up and purchase a fancy mega control everything with one remote like a Harmony, Universal, or Pronto.
After spending most of a weekend programming that new remote, you discover that you simply can't control your PS3. Why?? Sony opted to control the PS3 with Bluetooth ... NOT IR.
In steps the PlayStation 3 Blu Wave Remote. This inexpensive, handy device will allow full IR control or your PS3 and will consequently allow your fancy remote to control your PS3.
Note, we said "almost." The current firmware in Sony's PS3 ONLY recognizes Bluetooth ON/OFF commands. Translated, this 3rd party remote, will not allow you to turn your PS3 on ... or off.
Works like a champ. This review has used this device on his own PS3 and has deployed this device in a number of customer custom installation jobs.
- No extra functionality
     By A1G4XMOEBFOL3Q on 2008-09-23
The most critical thing you need to know about this remote is that, unlike the Sony Bluetooth remote, or a real ir to bluetooth solution, it doesn't offer any functionality that the game controller doesn't give you. In fact, it offers less - as it has no PS button, and can't power off the PS3.
That said, this is probably the cheapest solution to let you get some control with a universal remote - but it only offers you 16 functions. The Sony bluetooth remote is about $10 more, and offers 51 functions. Off of amazon, you can find the PS3IRX1 that offers 14 functions (missing L3 and R3) from the Sony PS2 IR remote, plus power off (but not on), for another $5. This is not a remote, it's just the USB dongle, for people who already have a universal remote. It's main advantage is that it looks like it was built with the PS3 - you'll forget you have it. For considerably more, you can get an IR2BT or PS3IR-PRO, which are real IR to Bluetooth translators, giving you the full 50+ button functionality via your ir universal remote.
- Lack of a power button is a major flaw
     By AOJCPBFUT1ZSF on 2007-08-15
This is a useful product to allow you to use your Logitech Harmony or other IR remote, but the lack of a power button really restricts the overall usefulness.
I opened the package, plugged in the IR receiver to the Playstation 3, and taught my Logitech Harmony remote all of the commands in about 5 minutes. It works like a champ. There is no lag in the PS3 receiving the commands, and without the touchiness of the PS3 controller's buttons. However, having no equivalent for the power button is a major flaw. It really takes away from the ability to have an all in one remote solution. Other than that, I'm very satisfied with the item.
- Great product, only missing power on/off
     By A3W4CH3P8MLBGT on 2007-11-25
You can read the details in other reviews, but I wanted to make clear the real value of this product is the USB dongle that allows you to use IR universal remotes with your PS3. Personally, I use it with the Harmony 880 (search for Nyko Blu Wave under "game system with DVD" when setting up your remote). I would have given it five stars, but the lack of support for turning the system on and off limits it to four stars.
- Good and Bad. Messes up some games if left in USB
     By ASSWT96453MFN on 2008-02-01
I bought this to Use with my Logitech Harmony 360 Controller.
The Learned commands did not work very well and would double and triple hit. After tweaking the timing settings I got it to work.
It works well with the Following Downfalls.
1) No Power On Feature.
2) If left plugged in all the time it will make it so you cannot play some games. I think it is because it becomes Controller 1...
This was the case for some PS3 games and also for some PS2 games as well.
Other than those 2 annoyances it works good.
- "MUST HAVE" for PS3 Logitech Harmony users!
     By AJHTUH87P0EOZ on 2008-06-01
I don't know why anyone would buy this remote to use for what it is. Sony makes what is probably a better remote for controlling blu-ray or dvd playback that uses bluetooth technology, thus doesn't require the usb dongle to receive the signal from the remote. The Sony bluetooth remote will work through entertainment center doors or walls, but the Nyko version will require a line-of-sight. Having said all that, I just had to have this Nyko remote. I have a Logitech Harmony remote that will not work with the PS3 to control movie playback. After teaching the harmony remote the commands of the Nyko remote (easy to do with the Logitech software), with the Nyko usb dongle plugged in to my PS3, I can control dvd playback with my harmony remote. Works well. Note that with a recent PS3 software update, you are now also able to turn your PS3 off with the remote. You can eject discs if you go through the menu on the PS3 cross media bar. A must have for a PS3- logitech harmony user!!
- Allows the PS3 to be a better Blu-ray player
     By AVBLGXSWRN666 on 2008-04-01
One of the knocks I always had against the PS3 as a Blu-ray player was that its lack of IR control meant that it couldn't carry its own weight in a serious home theater installation. This adapter makes it possible to control the essential commands needed while watching movies while using a universal remote control, such as a Logitech Harmony or Philips Pronto.
It is missing the ability to eject the disc, and power-up and power-down the unit, but such features are not as critical as one might think. The power issue is greater than eject, so it would have been nice had Sony thought enough of its customers to include an inexpensive IR receiver in the package. However, since my practice is to insert a disc when I power things up and eject it afterwards, it's not a problem for me to perform those functions manually.
I did run into a problem when I learned the remote codes with the Pronto. The directional arrows would repeat, making it very difficult to navigate menus. Changing the duration of the code transmission to 0.5 seconds fixed the problem for me.
If you are getting a PS3 for watching movies and don't wish to use a goofy game controller with its odd button mapping of controls, this is an essential purchase!
Shame on Sony for making it necessary, but kudos to Nyko for making it available!
- Perfect Device to sync PS3 with Harmony Remote
     By A1DZOWG6B8KBGW on 2008-08-14
I looked at several options before deciding to go with the nyko. 1)The IR2BT, which is pretty much useless after one of Sony's latest firmwares.
2) Schmart adapter, which which offers full control including power on/off, but costs over 100 dollars. 3) Nyko blu-wave, offers full control except for power on/off, costs 20 dollars.
For the price, this item cannot be beat. Harmony has the Blu-Wave in their database, so I added it, and was controlling my PS3 through my Harmony 550 in less than 3 minutes! Trouble free operation and worth every cent. There is no power off/on, but I go to my PS3 anyways to put the disc in, so really the only thing missing is power off. But that is really not even worth mentioning as its such a minor thing. I really love this product and give it 5 out of 5.
- Inexpensive and effective IR remote solution for PS3
     By A2KXZU9O2XVUS2 on 2008-01-30
I decided to give this a try because it was relatively cheap. Works as advertised and all the controls work very well on the remote itself. Even Logitech Harmony remotes have presets on their database for the device's IR dongle, so yes this a quick and easy way to control the PS3 with your favorite harmony remote. Unfortunately, you cannot turn the PS3 on or off with IR commands because that is the nature of bluetooth so you still have to manually get up and do so.
- Programmable with Harmony Remote
     By AH9DS3BZP6AIO on 2008-02-13
According to my husband: Great remote, especially for those who have LG Harmony Remotes and wants simplicity. The only downside to it is that the Blu Wave Remote does not turn on the PS3; there is no power on button. Unfortunatley you would still have to use the regular PS3 Bluray remote to turn on the system. Because the power on feature is not on the Blu Wave Remote, there is no way to program that into a Harmony either. We have the Harmony 1000 and the RF extender, so it works great for us.
- Amazing little remote
     By A1E8WHDRJ9BO8C on 2008-02-18
This thing is fantastic. I returned the OEM remote the same day I got this from Amazon. Does everything the OEM does plus it's IR so it works with my Harmony remote. The usb dongle is small, you can barely see it when plugged into the 40GB PS3. I was skeptical at first I am really thrilled with this remote. People say that it doesn't turn on the power which is true, but I find that I just plug in the dongle and turn on the power whenever I insert a movie. Get this item, you won't be disappointed.
- Works perfectly with 1 small limitation!
     By ABI50Z2VOV3I7 on 2008-03-10
The PS3 uses Bluetooth technology for remote control functions which sounds like a good idea until you realise that 99.9% of the home theatre market use Infrared. This renders learning remotes like the Harmony series somewhat useless as far as the PS3 is concerned. Fortunately there is a solution to this problem.
Supplied with a Dongle that is plugged into one of the USB ports on the front of the PS3, the Nyko remote converters 99% of the functions provided on the PS3 control pad from an IR signal into a signal that the PS3 can understand. Simply copy the Nyko functions onto your learning remote and you have control over the PS3 using IR technology or of course, just use the Nyko remote directly.
The one limitation is that you cannot emulate the PS3 button with this remote so turning the PS3 on and off is not possible. Not really a problem though since you have to put a disk into the PS3 to play it anyway which starts it automatically. When ejecting the disk when you finish watching the movie, you can easily switch of the PS3 manualy as you put your movie back in it's case.
The Nyko remote is an inexpensive reliable way to control a PS3 and I am delighted with it. Highly recommended!
- Great solution for Universal Remotes!
     By A389QB7R9EWBHO on 2008-04-13
This is a fantastic solution if you want to control your PS3 DVD/Blu-Ray playback with your universal remote. As other reviewers have noted, the only limitation is you cannot turn the PS3 on and off and must use the buttons on the machine. Given that you use it to control DVD playback, though, chances are you have to insert and eject the disc anyhow so it's not a big deal.
Works great with my Harmony 880 remote. The Logitech software even had the blu wave as a pre-configured device making it super easy to update your Harmony remote.
- The Bare Essentials For A Great Price
     By AZXNSJHBKGLO6 on 2008-05-09
I recently purchased a PlayStation 3 primarily to play Blu-Ray movies on my new HDTV. I was a little more than frustrated to realize the official remote uses RF to communicate with the console system, effectively rendering my amazing Logitech Harmony One remote useless. I came across this peripheral while browsing late at night and rejoiced.
It comes with the remote and the USB IR receiver. I didn't have to do anything more than plug it in to my system. No configuration needed.
First of all, like others have explained, this is a bare-bones solution for those looking to control their PS3's video features. If you don't mind having more than one remote for your entertainment center, it would be best to buy Sony's remote. You can't turn the console on/off with this remote, you can't control "advanced features" such as angles, a/b programming, and the like.
What it can do is navigate the PS3's main menu, the BD movie's menus, play, pause, scan, and chapter skip. The "advanced features" can still be accessed through the on-screen display you would normally use when controlling the system with the gamepad (by pressing the triangle button). For me, this is no big deal since I'm not one to use a/b repeat, or other features on a regular basis. The lack of the power control isn't a big deal to me either because I just turn the system on when I'm putting in the disc.
It was super easy (as usual) to program the controls to my Harmony One universal remote. A quick key-learn session and I was in business. I even made custom "button" icons for the touch-screen. It works flawlessly with the USB receiver.
So to sum it up, if you're looking for a remote for your PS3, and don't mind multiple remote controls, get the Sony official remote. But, if you're like me, and want all the command on one (IR) universal remote, this is a great, simple option to easily control all the basic video-viewing functions.
- Terrific
     By A2L151ISW6RTFJ on 2008-08-11
When I bought my PS3 a Sony PS3 remote came with it it in a deal. What an annoying piece of junk. Every time I used it it needed to reprogram to work.
The Blue wave remote worked flawlessly.
- Works Great!
     By A1G8AYZEMSR3HX on 2008-08-16
I bought this device for the infrared USB dongle. I can now control my Playstaion 3 using my Logitech Harmony One remote.
- Great, but doesn't control the power On/Off
     By AVIU5ZC3S8N3N on 2008-08-21
Controls the PS3 great, except that you can not turn the PS3 on/off with this remote. You still need to get up to power on/off. Other than that, it works very well. I have integrated this with a Logitech Harmony 880 remote.
- Waste of MY money

PlayStation 3 Blu Wave Remote
Great price for a remote for the PS3 but I do not like the problem with my game controllers not being first all the time. When I power up the system the remote takes over slot 1 when I have the USB adapter inserted. I bought this so I could use a Universal Remote with the PS3 since originally it is Blutooth controlled. I recommend this product for you but if someone wants to buy mine let me know.
- Confused. Unsure. Final Decision Pending.
     By AM3UM45Q6X0D9 on 2007-12-18
Unlike most of the other reviewers, I purchased this PS3 Blu-ray remote per Amazon's "Product Features" that it had "Luminescent buttons allow for use in low light situations." Well, I just received it and we cannot see that it does. The buttons do not light up nor do they look like they would. I will be contacting the manufacturer tomorrow.
Besides that here is what I think.
Pros:
- Size: Just right. Not too big and not too small as some of the remotes are getting to be.
- Feel: Also just right. Fits in hand well, mine or my husband's.
- Buttons: Laid out like Sony's controller & remote unlike other 3rd-party remotes. So if you are used to the Triangle, Square, Circle, etc. buttons it is nice.
Cons:
- No power (on/off) control. But, as many others have stated this is not the remotes "fault" it is designed into the PS3. We tried some other remotes and none of them had a power button.
- [PENDING] NO "Luminescent buttons" as mentioned in Amazon's "Product Features."
- Home theater accessory
     By A1T1TMOZW24N74 on 2008-01-03
I purchased this to integrate the PS3/Blu-Ray player into my home theater setup. I'm pleased to say it is well worth it (and cheaper than the PS3 Blu-Ray remote). I was easily able to learn the IR codes to my URC MX-850 remote and I can now control the PS3's Blu-Ray player from my universal remote and avoid the awkward Sixaxis controller or have to use a second remote. The USB dongle works as advertised and I have had no problems "seeing" the PS3 with my universal remote. I highly recommend this product.
- Blu Wave Remote

I purchased this remote so my Pronto Pro could be used to control the PS3 for DVD/Blu-Ray playback. I was not disappointed. The remote worked without any trouble and my Pronto Pro easily learned the IR remote codes. This device is well worth it's weight in gold if you need an IR remote for PS3.
