Best Price: $19.99 $14.99
Need for Speed : Pro Street is a racing experience like no other. For the first time, you're designing and building a car, competing in iconic locations from around the globe and battling in four distinct racing styles- grip, drag, drift and the all-new speed challenge. The atmosphere is electric - complete with energetic crowds, photo-realistic vehicles and billowing smoke - all designed to embody the pressure and intensity of the gladiatorial challenge known as Show Down. What went wrong By A3F43PAJZLOE3I on 2007-11-14
Need for speed has been dependable for a long long time. Sure it was generic and we got one every year. This time, it took a big U turn. Every thing we liked in the past games are gone. Just after 15 min the game get so boring you will never touch the controller again. Probably it is a Wii port up. Cars looks good. Environment all look like a Wii/PS2 game. Stay with Carbon for now.
Boring By A36UE1D1Z9SQZE on 2007-11-21
4 races into this game and I was bored, I did not feel like playing it anymore. Free roam is missing where I could have gone an be lawless for a bit until I felt like playing again. Customization is great best of the series to me but that's the only good thing it has going for it.
Different and in many ways better By A3FML88TDCFRFU on 2008-01-23
Everyone seems to be hating on this new Need For Speed, but I think it's finally evolved into a real game, and I'm glad for it.
Reviewers complain about removing the free-roam segment of the game. Frankly, the free-roam was overrated to begin with. Half the time I just skipped to the events anyway. It also sponsored and glamorized illegal street-racing, and (contrary to the opinions of many of the poseurs that play video games) that's not a good thing. The last thing the streets need are a gang of unskilled, overenthusiastic children behind the wheel of their daddy's car causing accidents. EA probably realized this (thank God) and decided to take a different tack for this edition.
The gameplay itself is great, the drivability of the cars is significantly improved, tuning the car plays a *huge* role in the success of your ride (and the mechanisms for doing so are nicely put together and intuitive to understand). Improving the cars is simplified but thorough and satisfying. Steering and acceleration, all the game mechanics are great and actually better than previous versions. Overall, it's true that this game is more of a simulation than previous versions, but it's definitely *not* a Gran Turismo or a Forza. It's closer to Project Gotham in its pseudo-realism, but still keeps a street edge to it that PG4 hasn't got (and isn't missing cuz it's not that kind of game).
The menu system is a *little* rough - I understand what they were attempting, and I'm not sure they fully succeeded, but it's usable.
The graphics are stunning. It's true that the game lost a little bit of the previous versions' sense of speed - this time around they decided to take a more 'real' approach to things rather than the pseudo cartoony approach in previous NFS. The fact that you can wreck - and wreck badly - is a significant improvement over previous versions. Now you gotta be able to drive the car, not just ram through the boards careening off stuff.
Things that disappoint are the lack of tracks and the audio. The lack of tracks isn't *too* terrible a situation, because there's tons of variety within the tracks. Besides, it's a track game. Why bother with lots of crazy cityscapes and whatnot? The audio is unforgivable, though. The announcers are ridiculously annoying. Granted, they're actually somewhat realistic, but holy crap it makes me want to break something after an hour. And they love to say "Ryan Cooper" about 9.6 billion times. Aside from that, in-game audio is good enough with blow-offs and engine noises that are pretty immersive. Surround sound helps this a lot. And like pretty much every EA game, the soundtrack gets repetitive pretty quick.
Among the racers for the PS3, this is the one I'm personally most satisfied with. The next Gran Turismo will no doubt be a gorgeous addition with really good simulator-style gameplay, but I still believe that NFS:ProStreet will be my primary racing game for some time. This game is all about racing, not juvenile drama and getting chased by cops, and it will capture the attention (and appreciation) of most experienced street enthusiasts out there.
A Wreck! By A1UINAKV679ZR0 on 2007-12-10
Instead of improving on a great formula, EA decided to go in a whole new direction by making the latest Need For Speed politically correct. Gone are the races through the city streets and the chases by the police. Instead, what EA has given us is an uninspired track racing game with a racing announcer whose voice and repetitiveness begins to grate on one's nerve like fingernails on a chalkboard. I found myself bored after only an hour of play and eventually lost all interest in playing this game.
Everyone makes mistakes, and EA is no exception. Hopefully they will return to what works and the next Need For Speed installment will make us all forget about the nightmare known as Need For Speed Pro Street.
Wow, big let down... By A3HPF87NJKJ4ZS on 2007-11-28
Well, I have played the NFS games in the past mainly when I get bored of other games, never got a chance to get into carbon but based on my past experience all I have to say is wow, this game is terrible. Not only do you lose free roam but the biggest thing I noticed and didn't like right away was the controls. R2 is your acceleration... What?????? Not only is it R2, but its so ridiculously uncomfortable to hold down R2 which is meant to be a trigger, not something held down continuously. Your ONLY other option is the right analog which you hold up for acceleration and down for brake/reverse.
There are no more challenges outside of the actual racing part of the game... The game is slow and boring, you race, go to menu, race, go to menu, maybe buy a part for your car, race... Boring, I have had the game a week I played the first 3 races and haven't put it back in since, big big big let down, not to mention the graphics are not even close to the capability's the ps3 has...
- career mode rocks, no free roam :(
     By AYPLYKEVR7JCU on 2007-12-12
I don't know why this game is getting such low marks... I guess it's because they are by people who play to its fullest every single NFS game that comes out! The Underground series was cool because I was in middle school and stuff... Most wanted is, to me, the best NFS game out there... I got carbon and hated it...played one day of it then sold it...I know i am contradicting my beliefs here, but I got it for PS2 and got Prostreet for my new PS3...
Prostreet is something a little different that nobody (here on amazon) is giving a full chance to play out! 15 minutes should not be enough time to judge AN ENTIRE GAME!
just my opinion though...
- What happened to the NFS series?
     By A37RQ9IDGDPEKO on 2008-01-09
Need For Speed used to be one of the greatest racing series back in the day of the PSone, I could spend hours at a time with a single track. Fast forward to 2007 and the release of NFS ProStreet, there isn't a single enjoyable moment in this game. Sure it looks kinda pretty, except for the hundreds of in-game adds everywhere.
I give this game 1 star because of the fact that the game has been brought back to the outdoors and away from the cities, its such a breath of fresh air to be driving in the desert. The different modes are interesting for a few minutes until you play them for the umpteenth time, there is a constant feeling of deja vu about this game and i never felt as though this was a next generation installment of NFS.
This could have been any racing game, definitely not one worthy of the Need For Speed title.
- Not Bad, But There Are Better
     By AC63924IPU3IS on 2008-02-07
First of all, I'm not a gamer. I haven't owned a console since the Sega Genesis. I bought the PS3 because I wanted Blu-ray but needed protection from the format war. My wife wanted Guitar Hero, so we purchased the PS3. Since I've never played any other version of NFS, I had no opinion of the franchise before making this purchase.
My PS3 came with Motorstorm, and I really enjoyed playing that game. So my wife brought home NFS Pro Street thinking I would enjoy this as well. I played it for about an hour and it sat for the better part of two months before I picked it up again. The reason? It's painfully slow to play and I wasn't up for having to go through the process of tuning.
I rediscovered it a week ago and have given it more of the attention it needs. I have to say that I kind of enjoy the game. The cars are cool, there are a million different combinations of cars and setups to use in different types of racing (grip, drag, and slide). There are different modes for racing and online play is available. You get a lot of game here. There is enough here to keep you busy for quite a while.
Annoyances such as the announcer in career mode, and the slow, redundant processes that take place between the action ruin the experience. The fact that you can't exit a race day until you have dominated it without losing all your progress in that race day confuses me. Some race days have six or seven events. Have trouble with one of them and decide to quit, and you'll have to go through the trouble of going through every race again.
Overall, the game isn't bad. I have a feeling we'll be seeing this one in the bargain bin once GT5 comes out. Until then, if you're a racing fan and the idea of designing your own tuner to race interests you, then give the game a try. Just don't expect perfection.
- Boring
     By A2DQI3UWYXED6D on 2007-11-26
- Graphics is normal not match 30% of PS3 Power.
- There are no place for story.
- boring grip mode.
We are waiting for the new one maybe it will be better
- Bring back Need for Speed Carbon
     By A3GXGPZW1M80V3 on 2007-12-22
The problem with this game is that it doesn't know if it wants to be a simulation or an arcade racer. Need for Speed: Carbon is superior in every way and I still play it to this day. It's a shame that EA refused to green light a sequel to the best game in the series, (yes, I know many will disagree). NFS Carbon had a sense of style, a great storyline, but most importantly was quite fun and diverse. Prostreet suffers from many of the issues that bogs down many racer clones; namely, the crippling lack of tight controls and no sense of speed. The night-time races are also absent which is quite disappointing, as they really added to the atmosphere of street racing. EA has lost its way with this title, and I recommend that you explore the other titles in the series and pretend that this one doesn't exist; as it has tarnished a once great game series.
- Left Winning Formula
     By A1XW3L6INI69KK on 2008-01-25
As other reviewers have said, this edition of Need For Speed left the old formula behind. I miss it. There were stories built into the game. There was the free roaming. (This lack of free roam is annoying because when I want to check out a new car or new tuning after I leave the garage, I have to go to a race day. Just more wasted tim.)
Here ... just racing. And it's not exactly zippy. Every event requires a lot of loading, and apparently, even when I'm just practicing, a lot of saving. It becomes annoying, actually. Especially the announcers at the events that keep talking about you (Ryan Cooper).
But ... that aside, the racing itself is enjoyable, so if you don't have any bias for or against the old formula, this could be fun. I'm not big on tuning, but I've had to learn to work with it to make the cars do what I need them to do. If nothing else, it's something to kill time while waiting for GT5.
Hopefully, they'll return to what made NFS so much fun in the past with the next release.
- need for speed: prostreet
     By AR2GES49EKP0P on 2007-11-17
it is a good game graphics are good gameplay is good it is a little slow getting into the game but then it picks up and is good from there on out I am only about 20 percent though the game but over all I think this a good game
- Not well thought out
     By A1OWB32FT444MA on 2007-12-25
Good -
Graphics, sound effects, crash damage & ability to "total" your ride.
Bad -
Complicated menus and settings induce anger and frustration. The graphic background resembling modern graffiti tags for boy racers is just stupid and confusing to the eye. No discernable difference between the 2 difficulty modes - Casual & Racer. Haven't tried the hardest yet, as I'm too bored with the game already. Car choices early in the game allow for cars in different leagues to race each other, giving one player a huge advantage. Why would anyone race a 2 ton supercharged Chevelle SS against a 2500 lb. 177hp Corolla, ever? Anywhere?? Dumb. Some would argue that having such a choice actually enhances the game, but limiting the choices to just 2 cars at that early stage defeats the purpose.
Overall, as others have posted, there's just no sense to this game. Other than some smack-talking from competitors after certain races, there's no believable storyline, and no motivation to try and finish all the levels. It's almost as if EA just rushed an unfinished product out the door. Too bad...
- Good Racing / Hate Menus
     By AF2HW9GNN8GN8 on 2008-01-06
Ok, I just rented this game today just to give it a shot. I played the demo on the PS Store, found it rather bland. Therefore, I wanted to try the game just for kicks and giggles. Customization is fun, almost mind-boggling the different layers and colors you can lay on these cars. The cars look fantastic. The damage modeling superb (not as crazy as Burnout Paradise, but still fun to "feel" the effects and imperative nature of trying NOT to hit walls as it negatively effects your driving ablilities WHILE you race).
Career mode, even with the stupid menus, is amazingly dense and full of races. I played the game for a total of 2.5 hours maybe more, and I saw at the end of my session that I was only 3% through the career. AND that's AFTER I had beaten about three race days (roughly 15-20 individual races). Having to constantly upgrade your rides and tweak the effects of body parts to maximize your experience and performance is fun (especially the "wind tunnel" idea).
As a previous owner and fan of Carbon.. I really miss the Free-Roam ability to just drive for the fun of it around an expansive city. That I would say is my ONLY gripe with this game.
The Sounds are AMAZING. Especially if you have a decent speaker system setup to hear the roar of your NEW engine that you just modded into your "piece-of-junk" car. About 60 cars, numerous tracks, good soundtrack, and an ANNOYING announcer (seriously, its nice to make it sound "live" but please -- "*cough cough* excuse me folks, hold on.... uh, oh ok.. nice well ladies and gentlemen sorry I just had to grab my phone from ringing.." um, ok? Give me a break.)
All in all, a solid FOUR stars this game merits in my opinion. Doing away with the Free-Roam hurt the game.. People get a taste of freedom, then you take it away from them and bring back a menu-system.. You are going to have some angry fans, and HORRIBLE reviews.. as you, the reader, have already witnessed.. But seriously, if you haven't already, give the game a try.. if you enjoy cars at all, it is worth your time.
P.S. The Logitech Driving Force Pro wheel makes the game garner a "FIVE STAR" rating in my opinion just for being able to "feel" the tires grip the track as you race against and rub paint with your opponents. I'm off to buy one tomorrow to try it out with the game, and I'm sure I will not be disappointed.
- Not worth the current price
     By A93QJ00JF9M0L on 2008-01-08
I purchased this game for my 13 year old son with his new PS3 because he loves some of the NFS series. It definitely wasn't worth the $60 we paid for it. This was the only game he was really disappointed with. He loves Guitar Hero 3, has beat Ratchet & Clank Future Tools of Destruction, and continues to enjoy Tony Hawk's Proving Ground. He said the graphics for ProStreet were good, but otherwise hasn't wanted to play it. We are considering trading it in a recycled game store or selling it. I read one reviewer that said he really liked Prostreet, but also said he loved NFS Most wanted and hated Carbon. My son was exactly the opposite, he hated Most Wanted and loves Carbon, so maybe go by what type you liked. We recently got the PS3 version of Carbon since it was freezing up on his older XBOX and he said it was awesome for the PS3. I would suggest saving your money for the soon to be released Burnout Paradise or Midnight Club LA. Those are the ones my son is excited about for future games or wait until the price drops lower for Prostreet to try it out.
- this game sucks
     By ATV2659V9HG6T on 2007-12-10
please don't buy this game. i played the demo and it sucked. there will be plenty of racing games soon enough
- A Downgrade?
     By AW1APMJE1C9N4 on 2007-12-15
Being such hardcore fan of the series, would not sound fair to hear this review. But, this time, I have complaints. Maybe because PS3's career has barely started, maybe because the developers are still enjoying from the previous NFS games enormous success, this was not exactly what i've expected. At least for the price we are forced to pay.
This games looks like it was born and designed for a Playstation 2, with only gorgeous-detailed graphics on an OK variety of cars as the only "improvement", which CANNOT be taken that seriously as a new console's smash hit like it happened when "NFS: most wanted" first came out. Plus, the number of races and places to go look all pretty much the same, it only gets harder as the games goes forward. Nice introduction of realistic damages (they remind me a lot of "Colin McRae Rally" and the recent "Dirt"). The soundtrack is the worst of the series, and very limited too.
The coolest part is as usual the improvements you can make on your ride, the paints and the 1/4 mile drag race, this time more present.
Overall, definitely not the greatest of the whole series, but it is still quite enjoyable as a race game.
It is obvious the challenge of this title versus the Xbox's 360 "Forza" series, but looking at the current titles of racing games for PS 3, you won't have much choice anyway. Bought it brand new, I would recommend you'd get an used copy and wait to spend on a real hit in the future.
- A really fun Need For Speed game.
     By A3V5VAQ1EVFIYY on 2007-12-22
I really don't understand why this game is getting such bad feedback. The need for speed series has always been about gathering different types of racing and putting them into a well thought out quality game. Pro Street isn't about underground street racing through cities and running from the police. This game is about semi-professinal racing. Everything from circuit tracks, drag racing, drifting, to doing speed runs down a closed off desert road. This is by far the most realistic Need For Speed i have played in a very long time. I love how the engines in the game sound exactly like they do in real life and when you apply upgrades to them such as turbo chargers you can hear and feel the performance upgrade. Unlike how in past need fors speed games there were generic sounds that were applied for every car with only slight differences. The game of course ins't perfect, it takes a lot of time to learn the menue system and the "Career map" which looks like something i drew on the sidewalk as a child. Once you learn how to use all of the new features in pro street it really becomes a fun game to play. I haven't played a need for speed that i couldn't tear myself away from since underground 2. Pro street has ended that streak. To sum it up, if you're looking for a need for speed underground, most wanted, or carbon then this isn't your game. If you're looking for a new racing expierence that almost has a gran turismo feel while sticking to the Need For Speed roots, i highly recommend this game.
- Works with Logitech G25 Racing Wheel
     By A12TDP7VDJT7O4 on 2007-12-25
I have only played the free demo on the Playstation Store, but I wanted to mention that this NFS game works well with a racing wheel (I tried the G25 wheel with NFS Most Wanted, but it was too sensitive).
NFS Pro Street feels natural and even supports the G25 Racing Wheel's stick shift and clutch, something Gran Turismo 5 (PS3 demo) does not even support.
It is a lot of fun blasting by the competition while throwing the gated shifter into the next gear.
My only complaint about the demo was the lack of challenge; there seemed to be some handicap in place, making it easy to beat the other racers even when giving them a 45 second head start. I'm not sure if it exists in the full game or not.
- They could have done better
     By A2B9T2ENV9EG7I on 2007-12-29
It has some fun elements, but it dosen't add up to the other Need for Speed games.
- Need for Speed: ProStreet
     By A2Z5WCMN4ZYKDE on 2007-12-29
The Game is fun, I really miss racing on the streets as the way the previous versions were.
- It is different but still fun and challenging
     By AHSOQIZF0ENUG on 2007-12-31
Some of the higher career tracks are challenging. It is also cool to customize and tune your cars for better performance. The drifting and drag races are cool. No ther are no cops but it is still fun.
- great game.
     By A2LT6YBLXOV3YD on 2008-01-07
this game is great. i have played others NFS games and this have more tecnologies, but not at 100%, i give for the game 4 star.
- christmas present
     By A3T10ZPU04WSAE on 2008-01-12
Gave this to my son at christmas and it must be a great game because he hasn't stopped playing it yet!!!
- Very buggy: Frustrating!
     By A3ARJ8BDOFKB9Y on 2008-02-16
The races themselves were good, but the game is very buggy. Up until the point were I encountered this:
Whenever getting enough points in races so that a raceday is won: The game freezes and has to be restarted. So I was not able to win anymore racedays and advance in the game. This was very frustrating and amonst other bugs I would not recommend anyone to play this game and put your time and effort into it.
- Pro Street is underated
     By A26FPG3HUC5NBK on 2008-03-18
NFS Prostreet has been getting a bad wrap on Amazon it is a lot of fun to play and the menus aren't as bad as everyone says. If you are having problems with the menus then you must have rode the short bus to school. It isn't boring either anyone who loves racing games as much as I do is going to love it. I do miss the police chases that made Hot Pursuit so much fun but it is diffently an improvement over Carbon. The career mode is way better than Carbons which I beat in under a day. The only thing I don't like about Prostreet is that it is hard to get practice drifting. The tracks are too short unlike Carbon where you could drift for days. NFS broke from tradition with Prostreet but I think that it is a good product.
- Not my thing
     By A2EG9GYN1VTBWQ on 2008-04-02
Owning NFS Underground & Carbon and enjoying both of them immensely, I was terribly excited when my husband mentioned that not only had he purchased a copy of Pro Street for our PS3, he'd screwed up and bought the PC version first (score! no more fighting over the controller). The PS3 version arrived today.
The game doesn't draw me in at all. I think it's too structured, too rigid, too boring. The damage thing's a joke (I got light damage from rear ending someone at 30mph BUT no damage slamming into things at 80mph?), the guiding lines are grating, the cars don't seem to handle any differently than they have in the past, and I really miss free roam.
I saw a reviewer say removal of free roam was good because it "sponsored and glamorized illegal street racing". Even if I agreed (I don't), I can't, for the life of me figure out how free roam does while in this person's mind, the other modes seemingly do not.
I won't go so far as to say that the game's bad, it's just not my thing.
- FINALLY
     By A7L8XRVC7KX8F on 2008-04-07
Yes I agree this game has evolved..Great.
I liked it gives you a sense of what a car can handle more realistic lets take the Evo for example you line a 350Z up agianst it and the Evo ripps it off the start like it should Unlike the past Need for speeds were all wheel drives and two wheel drives are equal this game gives it a reality taste..
And I also agree that I will miss the police chases but hey kids will believe anything they play. Tisk tisk tisk garenteed when NFSMW landed kids were trying to race there parents cars rolling them and what not trying to get into trouble HA..
I like the fact you have to pay for your mistakes Take a turn too quick and blam your paying for it.. I also like that you can Total a car Seperates real Game Racers from the lead foot rail riders. And the fact that you cant gain NOS back makes you distribute it Evenly..
One thing I didnt like about it WHERE IS THE AMERICAN MUSCLE what about the Pontiac Firebird and Im talking about the WS6.. In know there was a Camero there same engine But HA why its the Idea of having A firebird..OK I answered my Question..but still they could use just A lil more American Muscle..
Graphics are really good Used the PS3 to the full advantage I belive this game came out the right time. I Like three types of games for any station Boxing Adventure and Racing.. this diffently landed my top ten..
The Nerdy Critics who think its a weak story line SO WHAT who plays this game for the story line. Anybody who loves to fix cars and know just a little bit about cars Yes this is a game for you..
- Well......there are better ones out there
     By A27QIMSK6706LC on 2008-04-28
Love EA and they Sports games and most other games as well ....but seriously they must have been high to throw this one in the mix....definately not what I expected having played several NFS games before.
- Buggy, unplayable
     By A176BH9L2E8MBI on 2008-04-30
The game itself is not that bad. Problem is that EA is delivering a beta and claiming its a finished game.
First time I put the disc on my ps3, I had to download a 730 MB update. Yes, that's right: 730mb. Even after the update, the game is still too buggy, I never saw anything like this on a videogame and i've been playing since the NES days.
During the race, sometimes the game stutters, and its easy to lose control if you're in a tight turn.
But what made me lose faith on this game is the fact that it hangs during situations, sometimes when you finish a race, it hangs. Now I can customize my cars! It hangs at the end. I pursched a BMW M3, customized it for 3 hours and bham, game hung, and I had to restart the game and lost all my customizations.
Its so frustrating, I gave up playing. It's not worth it.
The game itself is not that bad, it's not excellent, but the customizations, the aftermarket parts make the game interesting. Honestly, I dont miss the free roam, Burnout Paradise, which is focused on free roam, is so much better than need for speed for that...
The menus are totally confusing, the announcer is so in love with you, he says your name like 82 times per race. He's also pretty annoying after a few minutes. The graphics are playstation 2 style, not even close to the power of ps3. For example, the dust from other cars in front of you has absolutely no shade, no distance and no transparency. It's like seeying a 16bit graphic.
In a nutshell, this is one of the most frustrating games ever. I couldnt be more disapointed.
