Puddle Of Mudd Band: Wesley Scantlin - vocals/guitar Douglas Ardito - bass Christian Stone - guitar/vocals Ryan Yerdon - drums

"It's about passion and writing music that connects with other people and somehow heals them in a great way. I really want to try to crawl under peoples' skin and at the same time make some kick-ass rock `n roll music," says Puddle Of Mudd front man Wesley Scantlin about his band's third album, Famous.

Puddle Of Mudd now has fresh inspiration from new members Christian Stone (ex-Campfire Girls) and Ryan Yerdon.

Famous was recorded in Los Angeles and Colorado. Brian Howes (Hinder, Daughtry) co-wrote the first single "Famous" with Wes and produced the track. Former Black Flag drummer Bill Stevenson (Rise Against, MXPX etc.), Jason Livermore (Rise Against, NOFX) and our own Jack Joseph Puig along with Puddle Of Mudd all have producer credits on the album.

Hometown Base: Los Angeles, CA

· First single "Famous" topped the rock radio charts at #1 on both the Active and Mainstream Rock formats. Top 30 @ Modern Rock.

  • Not quite what I expected

    By A3ACWQYWCWHGWX on 2007-10-09
Sure it's easy to bash these guys who're without a doubt heavily influenced by 90's bands such Nirvana and Alice in Chains, but I'll refrain from that.
The albums starts strong with the chart rocking and ultra-catchy single 'Famous' and then slides into the realms of mediocrity. Those expecting numerous rocking songs in the vein of older classics such as Away From Me and Control etc will be bitterly disappointed, as this albums comprises of numerous bland 'rock ballads'. Next time the guys should stick at what they're good at; producing balls out Post-Grunge anthems.

  • I guess I can now call myself a proper fan?

    By A70YTUFJY5HXN on 2007-11-27
I got into Puddle of Mudd, P.O.D. and Linkin Park, all around the same time. It was the year 2001, a period in my life when I just had this urgent and ongoing need to bang my head against something... and that's all I'm saying.

With the utmost respect to the others, Puddle of Mudd is the only group I've stuck with and after listening to this, I'm convinced I'll always stick with them. (I guess I can now call myself as a proper fan?) I'm not going to lie; I'm not feeling this album quite as much as the one before it, even less so than the one before that (and if you haven't considered Puddle of Mudd before now, I strongly recommend you have those two in your collection before you consider this one at all) but it's a fun album to listen to still. I'm no expert when it comes to rock music but I like the lead singer's voice, these guys play real instruments, they play their instruments well and their lyrics are always angst-ridden, (as is Wesley Scantlin's vocal style), which suits me just fine. I also think the group is beginning to pull away slightly from their Nirvana influences and are beginning to find their own individual sound. I think this could work to their advantage.

I have favourite songs on this album and they are "Psycho", "We Don't Have To Look Back Now", "Moonshine" (my overall favourite), "Thinking About You", "I'm So Sure" (a close second favourite that made me think of my father) and "If I Could Love You". I think this is a great album.

  • Who knows

This CD along with Puddle of Mudd in general is a bit of a guilty pleasure of mine. While I don't think they are the most talented or original band, they can craft some pretty catchy radio stuff. This album is better than their last one, Life On Display, but it's not quite as good as their first. If they market the CD it has the songs to do very well on rock/mainstream radio, but it seems they aren't marketing it much at all. Here's a run down of some of the songs:

Famous - their first single similar to Away From Me and Control. 8/10

Livin' On Borrowed Time - Like Famous, the chorus is like a Vines song. 7/10

It Was Faith - Generic rock ballad. 6/10

Psycho - Like Nirvana's Lithium only faster and louder, it's a bit repetitive and the lyrics are stupid. 7/10

We Don't Have To Look Back Now - Another rock ballad, not too bad, could be a hit. 8/10

Moonshine - One of those songs that's kinda filler, but this is alright, just not very unique. Reminds me of their 1st CD's vibe. 7/10

Thinking About You - Another decent ballad, the beginning is a lot like Edgewater's "Lifter". 8.5/10

Merry Go Round - Lot's of Nirvana inspiration here, Son of a Gun and Molly's Lips come to mind. 8/10

I'm So Sure - Weakest song on CD as far as rock songs go. Nothing memorable here. 5/10

Radiate - Chorus sounds like Augustana's Stars And Boulevards with some "Blurry" guitar work. 8/10

If I Could Love You - Like Moonshine. Not a good closer, Piss it Away was much better. 6/10

No 9/10's or higher because there is nothing that original or special about this CD, but I would say as a whole the CD is a 7.5/10. their last would be 6/10 and the first 9/10.

  • They're Back!

    By A3ARQ5AWQ3U3PZ on 2007-10-09
After a long 4-year break, Puddle of Mudd return with their best album yet. With "Famous," Puddle of Mudd prove they haven't lost their touch one bit. As we all remember, "Come Clean," along with System of a Down's "Toxicity" and P.O.D.'s "Satellite," were THE rock albums of 2001. If you were in high school, it's no doubt that "Come Clean" was a favorite among either your friends or classmates, especially the song "She Hates Me." Possibly due to the radio overkill of that song, their follow-up, "Life on Display," did not do nearly as well. It went practically unnoticed by the public. So even though it's been 4 years since their last album, it seems more like 6 or 7 years have passed. If properly marketed, "Famous" is sure to be repeat the huge success of "Come Clean." If you were disappointed in "Life on Display," then you should give "Famous" a listen. I definitely recommend this great comeback album.

  • Does it radiate?

    By A3TURI28PHER2V on 2007-10-16
Puddle of Mudd's new album, "Famous," took an awfully long time to come out. It's still not as bad as that 2020 date Amazon predicted a few months ago.

    1. Famous: 9/10. A really good rocker to start the album, similar to "Away from Me."
    2. Livin' on Borrowed Time: 7/10. It's an okay song, but it's rather forgettable.
    3. It Was Faith: 9/10. It's the best of the ballads on the album.
    4. Psycho: 10/10. Here's my favorite new Puddle of Mudd song. There's no way this doesn't become a huge hit single.
    5. We Don't Have to Look Back Now: 5/10. No, we don't have to look back now, but frankly, I would rather hear the first four songs again.
    6. Moonshine: 8/10. Some of the most random lyrics of any Puddle of Mudd song, but it's still pretty catchy.
    7. Thinking About You: 3/10. This would be the low point of the album.
    8. Merry-Go-Round: 8/10. Someone said this sounded like a Nirvana song. I'm thinking maybe "Breed" with more words.
    9. I'm So Sure: 5/10. It really tries to rock, but it's just terribly predictable and repetitive.
    10. Radiate: 9/10. Hey, it's Blurry 2! Well, not quite, but not a bad song.
    11. If I Could Love You: 7/10. The instrumental at the end worked for "Time Flies," but it doesn't quite work here. Unfortunately, none of the songs on this album make for very good closers.

Overall, Puddle of Mudd's new album is a big improvement from their last album, the filler-loaded "Life on Display." It has a lot of really good songs, but it lacks a really great song, like a "Blurry" or "Drift & Die." On a personal note, I would really like to see "Stuck" and "Abrasive" remastered and re-released. Some of the songs on the EP's rank up there with Puddle of Mudd's best.

  • Master Thieves!
    By ACFWPZJUYLPO6 on 2007-12-02
So, The Kurt Cobain wanna be voice, the rip off of the Suicidal Tendencies song "I saw your Mommy" from a previous album on "She hates me", now ripping off lyrics from Dire Straits "Money for nothing and the chicks (are for)for free". When will this end and you damn idiots quit buying this vomit of music.

  • One-album wonder
    By A200C7YQJ45LRR on 2008-03-09
No matter how hard they try, it seems that Puddle of Mudd will be eternally defined by the album Come Clean. I don't know many people that picked up their following album Life on Display, but Wes and the boys still came back at us with Famous.

Speaking of Come Clean, though, the best songs (not to mention biggest hits) off that album were the breakup songs "Blurry" (which I loved from the moment I first heard it) and "She Hates Me", and it appears that those are the kind of songs that best work out for them, as tracks like that are what stand out on HERE, like "Moonshine", "We Don't Have to Look Back Now", and possibly "Radiate". Another highlight is "It Was Faith".

But then there are a few songs that don't make any sense, like "Psycho", but especially "Livin' on Borrowed Time" and "Merry-Go-Round". I can also do without the title track. This album may be called Famous but like I said, their first album is probably all they'll really be famous for.

  • worth the wait
    By A1U11PS71ML0YJ on 2007-10-13
More than worth the wait and delays that have plagued this release from Puddle of Mudd. With "Famous" already being out at radios and making a nice run on the charts. It was good seeing that the guys continue to make music that just about anyone can rock out too. Having already heard the songs "Merry-Go-Round" and "Famous" i had some idea of what to expect out of the rest of the cd. But it still does a pretty good job of breaking some of thoughts on what it would be like.

With polished tracks like "Radiate", "I'm So Sure" and "Psycho" PoM make sure they are heard and understood throughout this cd. With some nice songwriting by Wes Scantlin and others it makes "Famous" flow that much smoother, an overall great and step up from "Life on Display" while alright. It didnt ring with everyone like it should have.

Famous however will have a far better outing and look forward to seeing the guys on tour and with new material to go with it. It will be one excellent ride. Its all about being "Famous"

  • Nothing new here........they should listen to Fozzy
    By A3B8MI055LTPSD on 2008-04-11
Sounds a bit dated......it's not bad but the songs tend to be too similar. I like my CD's to have more variety, like Fozzy and their All That Remains Reloaded CD....

  • 4 years of waiting for this album
    By ADL5D1IKYPH6D on 2007-10-09
This album came out 4 years after Life on Display. I first heard this entire CD last friday (October 5th), and it truly surprised me. I heard Famous first MONTHS ago, and merry go round in July.

The first time i heard psycho was when Wes played it acoustically live on Loveline about 2 years ago. everything on this album is so well written.

Livin on Borrowed time sounds like something Puddle of Mudd wrote back in the day, before Come Clean. sound like the song USED or GIMP.

long story short, this album will surprise the hell out of you. i have been a mudd fan ever since come clean... i was 14 and now im 20, and not to say im not into the band's previous stuff, im just saying i really didnt think that they were capable of THIS. this is freaking fantastic.

expect to see We Dont Have to Look Back Now or Radiate as a next single...

sorry my review sucks. im tired and i dont really have the energy to go into too much detail. this cd is indeed good. i have a big group of friends that gave me crap for 6 years cause they all hated puddle of mudd... it became a running joke with me, 'the puddamudd guy', and now they are all going nuts for this cd, and all of the sudden love this band.

this cd definetely has a mainstream feel to it, but who's to say thats such a horrible thing?? this cd will blow yer freakin face off, half the songs are so different from their style, and its GOOD.

do not - i repeat - DO NOT judge this album or band again until you have actually heard it... you won't believe it.

  • More Mainstream, But Good
    By AYSLSU7966FWE on 2007-10-15
It's been 4 years since Puddle Of Mudd's last album "Life On Display" was released. It was a good album with several standout songs, but overall it seemed a bit disappointing compared to their excellent debut "Come Clean." Now the group has finally returned with a different lineup (new guitarist and new drummer) to deliver a more radio-friendly album.

The first track and single is "Famous", which sounds like a sped up version of "Control" or "Away From Me." It's a good toe-tapper when driving on the freeway, and it sounds like the kinda material that their last album needed more of. However, this is probably the edgiest song on the album, with the rest of it containing a lot of radio-friendly tunes. "Livin On Borrowed Time" is a nice mid-tempo tune, but isn't much of a stretch for the band's sound. But songs like "It Was Faith" and "We Don't Have To Look Back Now" are very nice ballads that are sure to get the female fans screaming in concert. "Psycho" is another mid-tempo tune that could likely be the next single, and it's very catchy! So is "Thinking About You." The band rocks out some more on "Merry Go Round", a tune that sounds like '91/'92-era Nirvana. Other songs like "Moonshine" and "I'm So Sure" are pretty decent, but don't grab you a lot. "Radiate" has a guitar melody not unlike "Blurry" and is also a good ballad.

On my first listen, I wasn't particularly impressed because I kept waiting to hear the band's faster, heavier stuff. But after a couple listens I found several songs stuck in my head. It's a very mainstream sounding rock record, but that doesn't have to be a bad thing since the band does it well. If you like Puddle Of Mudd at all, chances are you like some mainstream rock anyway. The band seems less angry on this album, and like they're ready to just have fun this time around. It's a good CD to play while driving around on a cool, sunny day with the windows down. It's a pretty solid album, although it seems to end a little prematurely. They could've stood to put another song or 2 at the end. But give it a try!

  • Unexpectedly Sub-Par
    By A3RWQLRQ1OSKGN on 2007-10-21
I was really expecting great things from POM after hearing Famous for the first time. However, my expectations were not met. There are a couple of great ballads early on, but once moonshine hits, the album takes a turn for the worse. I wouldn't recommend it.

  • A real winner!
    By A18PV5R3NJLEBZ on 2007-12-27
For everyone who bought the album, and has followed 'POM' throughout their carrer like me, you gotta ignore the politics of the music industry. Alot of people brand this band for their first album. I know the reason behind this was the mass airplay it garnered at the time on music t.v. Back then, genuine rock still garnered airplay. But now, the controllers of the industry have decided that keyboard beats and talentless teens are the only way to go. While pop music has its place, having it as the only option is unaceptable. Famous is defineatly a clean, well enginnered and produced album. The record is a slight pull-over from previous efforts. The tracks in general are a little softer, with more compasion led lyrics. Track 5 even touts strings and a Piano. Lead singer Wes and bassist Doug noted in an interview that today, record companies take no risks whatsoever with anything (hence the record companies choice to name the album after a single with no band input). So all album material must be single ready. But even with this unwritten law, they still keep true to their great modern rock material. Even with two new members on board, the overall picture stays the same with only good to say about the new member influence. Although some of Ryan Yerdon's (drummer) almost constant "tripping over side-walk cracks" beats could be hardened a little. Many tracks, given the chance, would bring this album to multi-platinum status. All in all, I recomend this album to most people. Its soft enough at some points for the casual music listener, heavy enough for head bangers and great nid-tunes in between. Its a great listen all the way threw, just like 'Mudds' first two records. And even putting the fact I'm a huge fan to the side, I'm writing this as if I was just a curious first time listener. Aside from the teeney boper group or ghetto fabulous clans, no buyer would be dissapointed.

  • Guess I'm #3 to recomend the new Fozzy CD instead!

Do yourself a favor and do as other reviewers are saying and check out the new Fozzy All That Remains Reloaded. It's absolutely incredible. All That Remains Reloaded (W/Dvd)

  • Another pretty good album for their 3rd effort
    By A3C6ZCBUNXUT7V on 2008-11-06
It's been 4 years since their last album, and again the Kansas City group delivers a nice 4 star album. In overall quality, I'd say it's right about equal with their last 2. Yeah I know they have been criticized for sounding like Nirvana, and I'd agree, but it's not all that bad of a thing. This might be their most consistant of the 3 albums, no great song, but no bad one. I'd say 2 are ok, the other 9 are good. Of the 950+ CD's I own, only about 50 or so are alternative CD's, but Puddle of Mudd is one of the groups I like they consistantly have pretty good albums. If you're a fan, I'd pick this one up as well.

    #1 - 9
    #2 - 8.5
    #3 - 8
    #4 - 8
    #5 - 8
    #6 - 7.5
    #7 - 8.5
    #8 - 7
    #9 - 8.5
    #10 - 8.5
    #11 - 8.5

  • Love Stepping In This Puddle
    By ADFR0SMWK9YX7 on 2007-10-14
They will always be compared to that other band, but nonetheless a real good album and kind of better than I thought. After a couple of release date changes and one title change ,the album finally came out. This one is more comparable to "Come Clean" which was great!!!! The standouts are Famous,It Was Faith,Psycho,We Don't Have To Look Back Now,I'm So Sure and Radiate. It Was Faith and Radiate are the Blurry and Drift & Die from "Come Clean".Don't have a real favorite yet, but, It Was Faith and Psycho can become the big sleepers from this album in time, along with Famous, which has been a hit already. If you like Puddle and have supported them as I have,go pick this one up. A solid 4 stars. It is good ,clean RNR!!!!

  • MUDD STILL ROCKS!
    By A3T64M8D2XI3CS on 2007-11-12
Been listening to the disk for a couple weeks now, liked most of it from the first listen and the rest is really growing on me!!! Saw the band in concert in Des Moines, IA Thur. 11-8, great show!!
The vocals are vintage Mudd style on most of the tracks with a couple songs that are a bit of a departure for the whole band (but still love 'em). The guitar work in my opinion seems to be a bit better than on previous releases. The only knock against the album (and a very slight one at that) are the lyrics don't seem to be as cutting, emotional, and distressed as earlier works. This is probably due to the fact that the guys are growing up and maturing as adults and musicians.
Personal favorites from the album are Famous, schizophrenic psycho, merry go round, and I'm so sure.

  • Brilliant
    By APP55U8KIFYBK on 2008-01-31
I'm thrilled with all 3 albums after just discovering this band this year. POM rocks my world! I think it's brilliant that they called a song "if I could love you" without saying "I f***ing love you". Clever don't you think! And the Famous song...it HAS to be about the Entourage boys...Bring on some more. I love Psycho too! A whole new style for them. And it also shines.

  • more of the same but it still rocks hard!
    By A1MPEG5S1DNI52 on 2008-02-08
I wasn't to impressed with Famous on the radio but recently when I heard Psycho on the radio I couldn't get it out my head its an awesome catchy song that I can't stop listening to similar to Seethers Fake It. I was going to completely skip this album since I HATED LIFE ON DISPLAY. This is a great comeback album from POM I am glad it took them 4+ years to make it well worth the wait as others have been saying. It also sounds progressive which is new for POM and personally I like it each song sounds different (unlike LOD). I am still getting into this album but as far as I can tell its easily a 4.5 star album its that good one of the better alternative cds I've heard in 2007.

  • Great CD
    By A3AO62FZVOUVZ8 on 2008-03-29
I'm listening to it right now for the third time since I woke up. If you like PoM, you'll like this one too.

  • Don't know how people describe this as metal???
    By A2CWJT1E0A1M59 on 2008-04-14
Read some reviews on this CD on this site and it sounded like people were describing it as metal. So i went out and bought it on that basis. Boy was i disappointed. There is no way this CD is a metal CD. It is wishy washy pop rock at best. Nothing heavy about it at all. I must admit i have only listened to it a few times but i can't see myself listening to it much more. A lot of the songs are slow and no heavy guitars no screaming solos' the singing a mild. I like a lot of other bands that seem to lumped with this one like Breaking Benjamin, Hoobastank, Evans blue, 10 years and Three days Grace all great bands this band isn't in the same league to those band.

  • best CD I ever bought

  • More polished, more songwriters, more of the same
    By A10CJINP7KBR4W on 2007-10-11
Puddle of Mudd have always been interesting in their refusal to stray from their own formula. Whether its reviews accusing them of ripping off Nirvana, or stating they're nothing more than one trick ponies, they never have attempted to really stray from their trademark sound. Though when trying to sell albums that might be good. I saw them in concert in August and was looking forward to this album, which contains some really good songs. The trouble is, I can't help but feel these are alot of the same tricks they've used before. Though they hired some professional songwriters, they are still the same formula. But in an age where experiments lead to disasters like Korn's Untitled, that can be a good thing. Sometimes getting straight up post grunge is just what you need. If you do, you'll find it here. It won't shatter your senses, or change your outlook on life, but it will allow you to turn up the volume on your stereo for a little while. An entertaining album.

  • Polished, but still another good album
    By A1435P5AMCPB3X on 2007-10-24
This album is more polished that previous albums, but overall still retains the Puddle of Mudd fun and rock sound that we have all gotten used to. Again, they released the lead track as the first single "famous" good song, but almost always signals a fall for the sales and the rest of the album. I hope this isn't so. Other tracks like Moonshine, Merry Go Round, and Livin on Barrowed Time are reasons that this albums is worth picking up and keeping in a collection. If you like puddle of mudd already, get this album. If you don't know them till now, check the back catologue before getting this album.

  • Puddle Of Mudd Famous
    By AR9WJK0EZDC2F on 2008-01-28
Just want to say that the band's newest release Famous is very good. I found a great improvement musically and loved the new ideas that the band put forward this time. They have some great rocking songs as well a few ballad type songs. I also found that the overall production of this CD is much better than previous releases. I for one would recommend this CD

  • Juvenile, misogynist dreck
    By A17TQRP2MI6Z2W on 2008-08-19
This album is worthless for so many reasons. First and most importantly, the music is pretty much just watered down Nirvana over and over. The same light verse, heavy chorus, the same type of vocals. With Puddle of Mudd, however, we are lucky enough to be subjected to a glitzy string-infused sugar coating over the sharp-edged pill that was grunge, but without any of the artistry and bite. That leaves this music little more than a Pop Rock CD alternately pissing on and sodomizing Kurt Cobain's corpse. The lyrics are (as always with this band) inane, woman-hating frathouse material. No offense to any fratboys who are actually cool and respectful to women. They -and anyone else who doesn't think of women as whorish sex-objects - should avoid this disc at all costs.
