Not for anything other than sheets of copy paper By A2ZR3YTMEEIIZ4 on 2008-02-28
For the price of the product, and the advertised speeds and functions, you'd think all of your printed material could be fed into this scanner. You'd be wrong. Snapshots will jam in this device. You are locked into Fujitsu's software for scanning. And, you do not get TWAIN drivers for the device, so you cannot acquire images from this scanner when inside a program like Paint Shop Pro. This is a single-purpose scanner: feed it all of your sheets of paper, and it will convert them to PDFs. If you have a lot of paper, then this is your scanner. If you have a lot of mixed media, this is NOT your scanner. Find another automatic document feed (ADF) scanner with TWAIN driver support.

Reviews & Questions Answered By A65RY8BSLX755 on 2007-08-20
I have horrible problems with technology. I buy stuff, and after 4 hours of trying to get it to do what I thought it should do, it doesn't. HP does this to me all the time.
That is why I was floored when I got the S510 working in under 20 minutes exactly as I wanted it to.
You can take a bunch of pieces of paper, scan in both sides, capture it to PDF, OCR it, make it search-able, save it to disk... all by pressing one button.
I am using the ScanSnap filing system software that comes with it. It is essentially a glorified file explorer, except that it will do text in PDF searches for you based on the directory (Or Cabinet as they call it).
I set mine to extreme compression, and full resolution, and then the auto OCR. The software warns you that it will slow down scanning, and it does. It maxes out my 2-3 year old Dell D600 with .5G of RAM laptop, but it gets the job done. I can still use the computer so it doesn't block like I have read elsewhere (maybe for the S500).
This is an upgrade to the S500. Mine was black, not sure what's up with the white ones (maybe mac?).
It comes with Adobe Acrobat 8. This allows you to delete pages, rotate them, etc.
The OCR is amazing. Out of the box, it gets a little confused with i1IlL but so do I, bump it up to the max resolution, and the OCR is flawless.
I probably won't bother with the try & buy Rack2 Filer. Google Desktop isn't essential for searching.
In the hundreds of papers that I scanned over the weekend, I may have had 3 jams which are REALLY easy to clear, and the software is pretty smart about it.
If I had a newer / heftier computer, things would go A LOT faster (not the fault of the scanner or the software though, I watched my CPU spike and slow during scanning & OCR)
This literally was one of the only pieces of gear I have taken out of the box, and had 100% functional within the hour.
My .005% gripe; Be able to tell the scanner "Yeah, don't scan the backs of these pages" rather than navigate all through the menus. But disk is cheap, and I can always delete it with Acrobat later.
I'll recommend it to my friends & customers.
Excellent value and performance By A1X83RR0A7TSDX on 2007-08-11
I have used this scanner and its software for the last 7 months. It works extremely well, is very fast, has nearly perfect software, and is well worth the cost. The bundled software alone is worth quite a bit. Use the background OCR for scanned documents along with Google Desktop Search or similar and you will be able to find things in seconds most of the time.
I scan every piece of mail, receipt, or paper that I get. I can now realistically go paperless - this is what I've been waiting for.
It would be nice if it had standard driver interfaces or Linux support, but I'm very happy with it otherwise.
Great, but won't work on a server... By A2W437VMA8PMR on 2007-09-13
I bought this item for my small office. I wanted it to be shared by the partners on the server, as it scans super fast and comes with a complete standard version of Adobe Acrobat 8.0.
Nevertheless, the software and hardware are not compatible to work on a windows 2003 server environment. You have to practically restart the server in order for the thing to work, and if the server goes into sleep mode or you turn the S510 Scansnap scanner's power off, the server won't recognize it.
It worked great on my Windows XP Professional PC; nevertheless, DO NOTE that you must have Windows SP2 for XP installed on your computer. I don't know how it will work with Windows vista. In any case, do consult with a techie or a specialist to get the thing running, because you may run into the SP2 conflict, and it can get confusing as even if you have it installed the menus in the quick start guide do not necessarily come up, so you're left with a big "What now?" face on your expensive investment, especially if you're no computer techie or see-what-happens experimenter.
Almost Great By A109ATPS02LA7V on 2008-06-27
A fast document scanner like this one can be a huge help in organizing your life. Six months ago, the S510 was about the only game in town for a reasonable price. Now, there may be better options, especially for rather heavy-duty users like me. The pluses have been well-written about, so I'll give only the minuses:
1) No Grey Scale! B/W is fine for pure text and some graphics, but is horrible with photos. In a publication with b/w photos, one is stuck with either copying in full color which results in large files, or manually switching between color mode and B/W mode since "Auto-Color Detect" senses color, not the presence of photos.
2) The paper input tray has fences that are too short. Pages tend to torque left as they feed. The paper output tray has no fences at all, which often means that the output pages get shifted around or kicked off onto the floor. The "De-skew" option can get confused if there is graphics on the page or if the printing is stylized.
3) The color scans are too light and there is no way to adjust the setting.
4) Japan has lousy paper. As a result, this scanner has a hard time with good quality paper as it's too thick.
5) Oft-used scan options are buried in strangely organized menus.
6) Inadequate cooling. A few cooling holes in the base along with rubber feet would fix the problem, but as it is, there is no airflow through the unit.
7) Life limit of 150,000 - 200,000 pages, possibly due to the bad cooling. There are now quite a few pixels missing from the scans; it's still okay for text, but irritating for illustrations.
It's doing the job, but I'd shop around were I looking for the same type of scanner today.
- This scanner is wonderful, beyond belief
     By A3VZY7QOCV8CG on 2007-11-18
I save every piece of paper that comes in the mail or crosses my desk. I have phone bills dating back to when I first got a phone line, and that was quite some years ago -- we won't go into exactly how many. With the stacks and boxes of paper accumulating, and the filing cabinets overflowing, I decided that the only way out was to scan things to PDF and shred them.
I quickly learned that scanning double-sided, multi-page bank statements using a cheap flatbed scanner was going to relegate me to paper purgatory for the rest of my life.
When I found the ScanSnap, I was overjoyed. Not only does it scan both sides of each page in one pass, not only does it have a multi-sheet feeder that rarely misfires, not only does it scan documents into PDF format, but it makes the PDFs searchable, thanks to an excellent OCR software package that comes with the scanner.
Pros:
- Lightning fast scanning (pages go through the scanner very quickly)
- OCR software is great
- Save as PDF, import into Word or PowerPoint with the click of your mouse
- Compact design means it takes up very little space on your desk
- Very easy to clear jams or misfeeds when they occur
Cons:
- Sometimes mis-feeds when processing a large stack of paper
- Cannot handle different-size sheets within the same batch
- Post-processing is slow (your mileage will vary depending on your computer, but it takes the software on my computer a good 20 minutes to post-process a 15-page scan before I can save it to PDF)
Overall, this scanner is a truly remarkable piece of technology and I highly recommend it to everyone who wants to go paperless.
- Amazing Paper Management/Productivity Tool!
     By A2BFUCP6R3BVQA on 2008-02-26
Anyone out there who, like me, tends to accumulate a lot of paper needs to beg, borrow, or steal to get their hands on this baby. I've had it exactly a week today, and it's already had a huge impact on my life. I've had one of those "milk crates" sitting in my office, stuffed full of papers I wanted to keep or scan using my flatbed scanner for several months. I would make a dent in it every so often, but certainly never emptied it. With the ScanSnap, I finished it in under one week.
The scanner is a lot smaller than it looks in the pictures - takes up very little room when closed, and not much more when opened fully. It was simple as can be to hook up - install the bundled software, plug in the power and USB cords, and you're in business! It has worked like a dream since scan #1 and I am finding the ScanSnap Organizer software adequate for my needs.
I'm fine 90% of the time with the simple PDF format, but the OCR/searchable PDF settings have worked just fine also with the software I already had installed. the scan quality at Normal/Fastest is still clear enough for most things I want to save, and even when I've changed the setting to Best Quality a few times, the scan was still pretty fast.
As most people have noted, the scanner does not have TWAIN support, which was my only concern pre-ordering this, as I am pretty attached to my Nuance PaperPort software. But I haven't missed it at all. PaperPort can still view, organize annotate, and edit the ScanSnap PDFs just fine. I just allow PaperPort a view into the new folder and voila! The PDF format is just so universal these days, that I just don't think it's an issue. If the ScanSnap's output was a proprietary format, my opinion might be different, but you just cannot argue with 1. place papers to be scanned in tray, 2. Hit big green button to scan. 3. Throw newly scanned papers away. Open PDF in whatever program you want to use to edit, annotate, etc.
I have had minimal trouble with papers jamming and when it did happen, I could easily see why - paper had a tear I didn't see, a stray staple got stuck, etc. The rollers do slip and make a squealing sound on glossy paper sometimes. I have had maybe 2-3 instances of the scanner pulling through more than one page at a time, and again, I could usually see why this happened. More user-error than the fault of this wonderful invention!
Another big-time bonus for me -- when scanning with my flatbed through PaperPort, that software holds the scans in a temp file somewhere until you have scanned your whole batch. You also have to scan a blank page between each set of pages to separate articles. On more than one occasion, I have scanned a pile of magazine articles or something into PaperPort, made sure all my blanks were in place, and hit the "Finished Scanning" button, only to have it freeze up on me and lose EVERY single page. I have yet to find where those temp files might be (if anywhere) to try and salvage them when this happens. I'd resorted to scanning only about 20 pages at a time before letting it do its thing stacking and dividing. Definitely slowed me down even more than scanning one page at a time with a flatbed should take.
But that has all changed. The ScanSnap is the tool I have been waiting for to help me FINALLY finish my office decluttering. It is truly amazing, and if any of what I've said rings true for you, you NEED this scanner. It's not a luxury - it's a necessity!
- installation and compatibility issues
     By A2J63QLNMD9EQU on 2008-01-14
This scanner does scan nicely, but it was a five hour install due to
a. corrupt disc in the box
b. call to customer service, can't access their downloads with firefox (although they didn't mention that at the time)
c. call back, need to use explorer
d. finally get installed ... only to discover that the scanner's not compatible with my hp printer, and that I have to unplug the printer and do a complete reboot every time I want to use the scanner.
It does scan nicely for the price, however. I'd be really skeptical of buying this product if I was running Vista, given my issues. I suspect your experience will not be pleasant.
- Love the size but too many paper jams
     By AZ1KMX1F29LTW on 2008-05-05
I purchased this product over a month ago and I love that it doesn't take up too much space. It is very small and scans pages pretty quickly. The major issue I'm having is that the pages tend to jam too often. It doesn't matter if the paper being inserted and scanned is old or new, previously stapled or whatever. There are times when the scanner works really well and I do not have issues with the feeder. But more often than not I have to feed even a 3 page document because it continually jams. I did not purchase this product anticipating I would have to constantly feed documents 2 pages at a time. The product description boasts that it can hold up to 50 pages. Unfortunately, you'll be feeding the majority of those pages.
- Fantastic workhorse of a scanner
     By A3P4A5R99ADNA on 2008-02-10
I bought this scanner almost two years ago after moving house and having to deal with three large metal filing cabinets full of paper (about 30 linear feet of packed hanging files). After nearly breaking my back transporting them to a storage facility, I swore that I would never do it again: I would digitize everything.
My main requirements of a scanner were (1) it must be able to feed more than one page at a time, (2) it must scan in duplex and, (3) it won't cost me a fortune. I did my research and the Fujitsu ScanSnap S510 pretty popped to the top of a very short list.
All I can say is WOW! This little workhorse of a scanner has been everything I could hope for and more. I put the entire contents of those filing cabinets through it (probably 20,000+ sheets of paper) and have since then scanned and stored every piece paper that has come across my desk and several shelves of books whose pages I liberated from their bindings (probably another 10,000 sheets). The scanner paid for itself in no time with just the storage fees I saved on those files.
Given the load I've put on this cute little scanner, I've expected it to die on me at almost any moment. If so, I would happily have shelled out another $500 for a new one without hesitation. But this little guy just keeps on scanning day after day without complaint.
The only slightly negative thing I can say about it is that even though it does a fairly good job of scanning photographs, it doesn't really match up against a flat-bed photo scanner for quality. If you quickly want to digitize a lot of photographs and quality isn't of paramount importance, then the S500 will do a fine job. But, if you want to get the best possible scans of your old photographs and don't mind spending the time needed to do so, then I suggest you get yourself a good flatbed photo scanner - I've been using an Epson 3490 for well over a year with no complaints.
- Speedy Scans
     By A158YVZCTC44Z1 on 2007-09-14
I really like this small machine. I've had it about a month and have so far scanned thousands of old work invoices and statements for storage as well as family photos and patient medical records. Does them all. Very easy set-up, and relatively easy to figure out with-out getting deep into the included written documentation. I scan all kinds of stuff, this scanner zips through them with virtually no problems. I agree with other reviewers-"Blazingly Fast". My only very small complaint is it does occasionally jam but it is incredibly easy to unjam in seconds. It isn't a "twain" compliant scanner, so if that is important to you definitely be aware of that limitation. In my applications this is not a huge problem but has surfaced as a "hmmm... wish it did this" type of situation. This is why I gave it four stars-it isn't absolutely perfect but close. Another nice feature is it picks up the job where it left off, if something does get jammed or you are manually feeding in different sizes of documents.
The device has a relatively straight through pass for the documents or photos which makes it great at scanning old photos-so the photos don't get all bent up. The ability to duplex scan (both sides at once) is a real time saver.
It comes bundled with all the software a person could want or need so it is ready to go right out of the box! I like it so much I'm considering buying another one for work. For the price this nifty little scanner can make short work of most of your scanning needs.
- Definitely worth the price
     By A3FZW81Y48DZOO on 2007-11-02
I went through two other document scanners in the last few months -- the HP Scanjet 5550C and the Pentax DSmobile 600 -- before finally ponying up for the Fujitsu. The HP I sold after a few weeks (ADF never worked), and the Pentax I ended up throwing in the garbage (original unit was defective as was the warranty replacement I received). I would have saved myself a whole lot of time and money if I had just purchased the Fujitsu from the get go.
The S510 is pretty much perfect. Right out of the box it looks and feels carefully thought out and well designed. The software and drivers work perfectly with Vista. It scans quickly and clearly. The document feeder works great, and almost never jams (and even then, it opens up in a snap -- quite a difference from the HP, which required two different screwdrivers to open up in case of a jam). I love the way it scans directly to PDF, and preforms OCR and indexing in the background when your computer is idle.
This is a great product, well worth the money.
- 64-bit OS Driver Support !!
     By A2FJZ3IYQ9N65S on 2008-01-23
It's the best scanner you can find at this value and I will just mention the bad here.
No driver support x64 windows, I chatted with fujitsu tech and he told me to try the vista driver for S300 at my own risk. He also said they have no plan making x64 driver at this moment. I'm glad my laptop is x32 but the rest of my stations at home are all x64 as well as those one at my office.
>> UPDATES 8/25/2008 <<
Damien White says:
I spoke with a sales agent online and they said that x64 software is available after registering. I just purchased one, so we'll see how I make out on my x64 Vista machine.
- The best little scanner I've used...
     By ASTCIN8T0ZNHE on 2007-11-24
All I can say is that this little scanner is amazing. It works at the speed I need and the software is as simple as I like. I am a semi-geek, but I like user simple software. The less buttons I press, the happier I am. I have to do too much of that at work, so at home, I wanted something simpler. I had tried the Plustek SmartOffice PS282 Duplex Scanner, which has the same body type, but the quality and the software was terrible. The speed was slow, even at their simplest, and the quality of the PDFs were not acceptable. It could not even get the colors right on photos, whereas the ScanSnap does excellent copies. It cost me an extra $100, but if it lasts me long enough to digitize my library of books and files, then, it was well worth it. I told HP to move over because so far, all of their equipment, from scanners to PCs have left me dissappointed.
If you need a simple to use, and fast scanning capabilites, then this is the scanner for you.
- It's all true!
     By A1LY9PXD8YKKV8 on 2008-02-01
This scanner works so well I wanted to add my two cents. I've been scanning my home office documents for two years and I know what makes this a time consuming chore: 1) slow scans 2) paper jams 3) slow software 4) software that tries to help you name and save your documents (but only ends up making it a brutal and tedious task). Fujistu did a great job with all of these. I could not be happier. (One note: Don't bother installing the free trial of Rack2-Filer - it's pathetic.)
- Only one feature short of 5 stars
     By A2C1S69J353Y6E on 2008-06-06
The is a great scanner for converting documents to pdf. However, only has color and b&w options, no grayscale. If you have grayscale documents to scan, this is a major limitation.
Pros: Good design, small, scans duplex, comes with Acrobat 8.0 Standard (must register), scan quality good with slow speeds, works with VISTA.
Cons: No grayscale mode as above. Minor cons: Document feeder sometimes takes more than one page, must use a carrier for odd-sized or newsprint (only one supplied).
- Scansnap S510
     By A346M92HNXNRPN on 2007-08-26
I am amazed at how fast this scanner can scan both sides of a document at the same time. The software was easy to install and worked the first time. The interface is easy and straight forward. I can send multipage documents as PDF files in minutes instead of the hour it used to take.
- Amazing machine
     By AAYGK1SRKACGB on 2007-10-10
This little scanner amazingly does what it advertises, unlike many gadgets on the market. And it does it very fast. If you value your time this scanner is the one to get to go paperless. One con: the lowest setting gives poor OCR (for searching). However, the next highest setting is nearly as fast and works well. Bought at web best price from Ctistore and had nary a problem.
- Fast but Slow
     By A35UTP62R49NQ5 on 2007-12-26
I love this scanner. It's small. It's EASY to use. Easy to set up. Scans jpg's and PDF's. Scans both sides. I use the scanner in a small business enviornment. We are small manufacture that ships LTL and full truckload orders all over the 48 states. We scan every invoice, every POD, and every anything that relates to running the business. Me best guess is 60-180 pages per day. I have found only two problems with the scanner. 1.) Unless you are scanning crisp fresh paper, the autofeed will only work with 5-9 pages at a time. Anything that has been tri-folded for mailing, don't expect 25-50 page autofeed. 2.) Non-standard size paper. We have a couple companies we work with that send dot-matrix invoices. These are 6" x 9" pieces of paper. I have not found a way to scan multiple pages at once. I need to scan them one page at a time. Due to these two issues, it makes the process a little slow. But when you place 20 page fax in the scanner, it is beautiful to watch the speed.
- Very Impressed
     By A335I03CFWEEB on 2008-01-15
I've had this scanner for a few weeks now and am very impressed with it. I've scanned in a good amount of documents already and have pushed it to see how well it would perform. One document I had was nearly 50 pages and I scanned them all at once. The scanner didn't jam and didn't pull in multiple pages together. It worked perfectly. It is relatively fast and I love the duplex, delete blank pages, and auto-straighten features. The software is good, but I would like more control and configurability, but it does the job. The only thing I wish it has was a twain interface to be able to use other applications, but overall I am very satisfied with the Fujitsu S510 scanner and would buy it again.
- Paperless Life !. ScanScap S510 just fits the bill
     By AC6S8GBD5GKXE on 2008-01-27
Awesome is only word I can describe about this scanner. I am absolutely going paperless and scanning everything I get in mail ( except junk ). I spend almost 5 days in holidays and scanned every paperwork I recevied for 2007, now that's almost 1200+ pages and put them on CD.
I am scanning every check and every bill of 2008 and shredding the paper copies.
I am in RealEstate and Stocks and Since IRS now accepts photocopies ( what was last time you really needed original copy to send ? , I don't remember ), I have scanned over 1200 pages and will be scanning another 600-800 in next week. This scanner has scanned every document ( both sides ) and made a searchable PDF.
It comes with Adobe Standard and Scanscap organiser which is perfect with this scanner. My friends were amazed with this scanner and I am sure they must have bought it by now.
Small compact unit, duplex color fast scanning ( 18 pages / min ) and searchable PDF... Perfect Combo..
My best purchase of 2007 !.
Thanks Fujitsu , I love this product.. I am going paperless in 2008 with S510..
- INCREDIBLE BOON FOR SMALL BUSINESS OF ORGANIZATIONS SEEKING TO DECENTRALIZE
     By A1XR2W6Z7XZNJL on 2008-06-17
This little gem helped me exit a clinical psychology practive of 25 years last Spring of 2007. Amazon had the best price, and I got an added warranty from the mfr. Like a fool, I waited until the very end of my business life only to find out I had to retain many, many records. What saved me was buying this machine, then hiring my office manager's daughter for three weeks to feed documents through it - about 1/3 of the 3,800 pounds of confidential clinical and financial records I sent to the shredder. Now I am going to use it go get rid of an attic of paperwork. The full Adobe software works flawlessly. The paper feeds very nicely and handles some items I did not think would go through.
ONE LITTLE TIP: For scanning small groups or batches of paper that are stapled, I did not bother to take the staple out, as that process creates wrinkles. Just become adept at snipping off the stapled corner of the whole batch of sheets with some heavy-duty shears (I replaced several of these) and you don't usually lose anything worth keeping. If you have stapled groups of papers in the same file folder, this trick cuts down on time to scan several hundred percent.
ANOTHER TIP: You can use this machine to back up everything on paper that you really want to keep.
ANOTHER TIP: Tonight I used Adobe to sent three receipts via email, because I can use the Adobe to create a pdf file and email it in two or three minutes, no xeroxing or extra hard copy.
In short, if you are wanting to scan and store or send a lot of paperwork - even to the point of many hundreds of pounds, this scanner does an amazing job. And I clean it minimally.
- Great product
     By A2B96IE7DX84AM on 2008-04-30
This scanner performs better than expected. Installation was very easy. The combination of the scanner features and Acrobat makes this very easy to use.
I am scanning 60,000+ documents, and it would be a back-breaker without this product. The duplex operation with the autofeed works very well. If an error occurs or is suspected, the software lets you know, then waits for you to correct the condition, then continues. You do not lose what has been previously done!!!!
When the last document in the hopper is done, the software allows you to add more and continue, rather than arbitrarily assuming the job is done. I have scanned over 300 pages into one file thanks to this feature.
This scanner exceeded my expectations.
- The most useful black plastic typewriter-looking thing in my office
     By A1B0POABZT1SZY on 2008-06-05
I just got this a few days ago, so this isn't a comprehensive review. All I can say at this point is that I've been waiting for years for something like this to come along.
I'm a small-business owner with 7 years of client files which I'm frequently required to dig through, and it's no fun. It would be nice if I could do a keyword search and quickly find the one file I'm looking for. And since I also split my work time between home and the office, having a second set of files would be very helpful.
Suffice it to say, the Scansnap seems to have been designed for exactly these purposes. The software installed easily (I usually get nervous when a package includes more than one disc, but no problems here), and I was up and running in no time. The OCR works well (and quickly), and seems to recognize text in most common fonts. And it's a nice touch that it creates reasonably-sized PDFs; a 12-page searchable PDF consisting of mostly text weighs in at a svelte 550KB. Not bad!
There are some annoyances, of course. It usually gets hung up when you feed it a stack of pages that aren't all the same size. It mangled a few sheets of tissue-like triplicate paper. Converting a PDF to make it searchable is time-consuming, but at least you can set it to convert a batch of files that you've already scanned in, then go get a sandwich or something. The ScanSnap organizer program is decent, but a bit simplistic. I'm already finding little things that it doesn't do, but I wish it did. They are LITTLE things, though.
In short, you probably already know if you need something like this. If you do, it's a darn good way to go.
- Best Scanner Ever

I found this on Amazon during a search to replace my old scanner. I have had it two weeks and let me just say this scanner is amazing and you should buy one immediatly.
I had over 2000 photos that had been in storage and I would scan a few now and then. When I got the new ScanSnap I scanned over 2000 photos in about 2 hours with no problem whatsoever.
It took me a while to get used to the menus, but once I did, it is a breeze.
I have a collection of business cards from over 30 years. I scanned them in less than 20 min.
I have never been more excited about a product in my life.
Plus it comes bundled with Adobe Acrobat.

I read all the reviews on this page and I have nothing negative to say about scanning photos, no problems with jamming, very small footprint.
It just works, that plain and simple.

I was looking for a scanner to deploy to multiple offices that would be reliable, low maintenance, and easy to use. The fujitsu has proven to be all of that and more. I have been using some of these since May 2006 and have yet to replace or repair any of them. Each of these units scans anywhere from 50 to 500 pages per day and work flawlessly. Also with the included Acrobat 8.0 ($250 application for free) you can do just about anything to any document.
- Great document scanner!

I just set up and tried out this scanner yesterday. I was pleasantly surprised first by it's small size. Then by the speed and ease of use. It is capable of double side, color scanning with OCR. I scanned a couple stacks of bills in color. It was very fast. I then turned it to black and white only and single side scanning. I would estimate in this mode that it scans each page in approximately 1 second. Incredible. I've been using my flatbed scanner to scan in bills and documents. This is a completely different animal than a flatbed scanner. I haven't tried the OCR or played around with the software but I am very impressed so far. I highly recommend this product. I'm cleaning out my file cabinet, burning everything to CD and shredding all these old records.
- Bought one for business, then bought one for home

I bought one for a construction office where they needed to scan and send 20 to 30 page PDFs up to the main office every few days. The first scanner we bought sucked. Pages took for ever and the file size was huge (20 megs +). Then we bought the Scansnap. It has met our expectations. Fast, easy to use and it comes with a full version of Acrobat ($200+ value). After it performed flawlessly on the job site for the past four months, I treated myself to one as a Christmas present. I am running Vista on my home computer and after downloading the Vista driver all was fine. I am very happy with my purchase.
- Wonderful little scanner

I normally don't write review but just have to write the review to praise this scanner. I was frustrated with All-in-one machines not up to their potential. No matter it is HP or Brothers, they just does not get it right with their software. I finally bite the bullet to purchase this pretty expensive scanner after seeing all the review. I still had some dault with recent failed experience with Brother 5860CN MFC printer. But just with few days usage, I was very, very happy with my purchase. For the real estate/loan business, I have to scan 20~50 pages easily pur package with letter/legal size, single or double side pages mixed. This scanner handles it smoothly and quickly. The bundled Adobe 8 standard software makes the combine/edit documents easy and with great size compaction. Most other brands such as Brother used PaperPort software which is the worst choice they can have. I used to have to split documents to several package to send email due to large scanned file size. Now I combined all documents in one package and it's still very small and I have not even use the higher compression choice! I hope this review can encourge you to make up your mind. Great product from Fujitsu for this product doing one thing to it's best. I bought it through CTI store with $[...] after $[...] rebate directly from Fujitsu.

I was very impressed at how well this scanner can handle handwritten notes. They are on lined paper, which is not as clear as white copy paper. It's not a problem for the ScanSnap S510. I set it to Black and White and "Better" quality, and was able to scan 70 pages of notes in a matter of minutes. They came out crisp and legible, and when I was done, the PDF was only 3.6MB!
Jams do happen from time to time, because the rollers run the paper through so quickly. But it's easy to fix. Also, the scanner comes with a carrier sheet, for scanning newspapers and large documents, or preventing "multi-feeds" (when the feeder doesn't feed a single sheet like it's supposed to).
It's possible that a more expensive model would have a better feeder that wouldn't jam. Documents that were folded can be hard to feed. However, the scans are so quick and so impressive that it's forgivable.
Be advised that there are no TWAIN drivers for this scanner. You have to use ScanSnap Manager. The software is intelligent enough to rotate images automatically, and detect skew automatically and correct it. This is very nice to have. There appears to be some integration between the software and the hardware. For example, when you push the green SCAN button on the scanner, the software can detect whether there is a document in the scanner. If there is no paper, it will alert you.
I haven't tried the OCR so I can't comment on it. Instead, I use Adobe Acrobat to do OCR. In general, you shouldn't need an excessively high resolution to do it like some reviewers mentioned; 300 DPI is sufficient. Higher resolutions will simply require more processing time.
I highly recommend the ScanSnap S510. If you have a lot of paper documents, the ScanSnap S510 can help you.
