  • Impressive quality and perfect size

    By A2RDR5G65D9H84 on 2007-10-14
When I got the package, the first thing that made me happy was the size of this camera. I travel a fair amount on business and have a two-year-old daughter, so I always take a camera with me to talk to her at night and allow her to see me. The size of this camera is as good as it gets for traveling, and it also includes a great padded pouch for transporting it.

The other aspect of this product that I loved is its image quality, especially in regards to how well it adjusts the image based on the light and also how when you are on a Skype call and you move, the person on the other side can clearly see the movement instead of seeing a blur on their screen. I compared its quality side by side with my previous camera, which roughly costs half of what this one goes for, and the difference in quality was huge; making this a great purchase.

In terms of the software installation, the instructions were simple and clear and the process does not take too much time. The only thing that can be improved is that when you get to the point in which you are prompted to plug in the camera, while the computer is checking the configuration, the installation screen keeps prompting for the camera to be plugged in. People used to installing plug-and-play hardware will quickly realize what is going on, but some users may be confused by this and start unplugging and plugging the device.

In terms of using the camera with Skype, the integration is seamless. The only setting I had to adjust manually was the microphone, but this is straightforward, I just needed to go to the Options / Sound Devices and pick the appropriate audio in. A final thing to consider is that for the camera to work with Skype you have to close the Logitech Quickcam software, since the image cannot be used by both programs at the same time.

Overall I am highly satisfied with this product, and besides the minor problems mentioned above, the only other thing I did not care for was the stand. This camera works great if you are going to clip it to your laptop screen, but the stand provided for use with desktops is wobbly and does not help with image quality at all.

  • Nearly Excellent but Flawed Optics

    By AUM6Q8M9VJFGH on 2007-07-15
Update: A replacement unit has good focus from side to side. The focusing defect I saw appears to be unit specific. Check your unit for focus uniformity across its entire field of view to avoid a defective unit. Once you have a good one, the image quality is excellent.

This webcam does produce a better picture than the built-in camera of a MacBook. Yes, it works with with Mac OS 10.4.10 natively as a UVC device. HOWEVER, the unit I purchased had a focusing flaw. The left side of the image was always slightly out of focus while the right side of the image was well focused. As a result, the very nice lens system just could not get the entire picture right. This focusing flaw was not so noticeable at iChat's low 640 x 480 resolution, but if native resolution images were captured using other webcam capture software, the left 1/3 of the image was clearly out of focus. I believe the unit had its glass lens tilted relative to the CCD preventing it from ever bringing both sides into focus. As a result, the camera's touted superior lens was largely negated.

However, it is otherwise an impressive camera which delivers better tolerance to poor lighting than the built-in MacBook camera. The increased resolution CCD is impressive (in the focused portions of he picture) and gamma response yielded an image which conveyed greater depth.

If the entire image were in focus simultaneously (in full resolution captures) I would have given this using 5 stars. With the optical flaw, I can only give it 3/5. It is possible that other specimens may have better alignment between the lens and CCD, but without testing several more units, I don't know if the problem is a design flaw or simply a single missaligned unit.

  • Skype Users Stay Away!

    By A1VKVRL019C6HF on 2007-09-03
I purchased this webcam for use with my laptop and Skype. I use Skype for business and pleasure. Even though the box has the Skype logo on it, the product is NOT compatible with the latest version of Skype -- 3.5. The video freezes about 15 seconds into any call. I am not the only user with this problem. Check out the Logitech and Skype user forums and you will see that this is common to anyone trying to use this webcam with Skype 3.5. I have not been able to get a straight answer from either Skype or Logitech as to whether they are addressing this issue. So, for now, my advice for Skype users is to buy a different webcam.

  • Does not work with current Skype

    By A2YOG7QOVAAIUK on 2007-09-22
As some other reviewers already mentioned: This cam does not work with the current skype version ... but in case someone wants to keep his cam: after endless fiddeling around the fallback solutions seems to be to use Skype version 3.0.0.218 or older ...

Skype blames the problem on Logitech, Logitech says Skype is buggy (since the camera is working fine with the logitech video call software...(btw: this is a paid service for $6.95/month) ... none of the two companies seems to care, however, if a seller puts a Skype logo on the package, I do not care where the problem exactly is, I simply expect the hardware to work with Skype.

2 days later.... after I almost overcame my initial frustration with the skype incompatibility let me add that under Vista on my Thinkpad X60 neither echo cancellation nor face tracking do work... did I mention that the same is true for any of other nice additional affects (avatars, still picture ...)?? Logitech Support told me to try a clean install (remove logitech software, disable all startup programs and non essential services, reinstall), took me about another hour ... however none of the bugs encountered so was solved by this.

  • Pixelation on the Go

    By A96JD9312DHWC on 2007-09-27
Logitech makes good cameras - there is no denying that these days - and the notebook camera is a great piece of merchandise for anyone needing a laptop view of the world. That seems a good thing, too, especially since the world is becoming more compact and everyone wants everything on the fly. I've personally owned two cameras on my personal computer before this and, to put it bluntly, I've always thought they stunk. The way the pictures intertwine, the way the grain bleeds into the background; everything that was promised seemed to be compromised and then some. And then I got my laptop camera and was surprised, pleasantly, by what it had to offer.

While there are flaws in the presentation of live video (as mentioned by other reviewers), Logitech does a great job with what they say they will deliver. The sound connected to the camera is great, the video itself is great when you find something you want to showcase and farm the image somewhat (or just want to chat a bit), and the ease of learning the product makes it all the more worthwhile. After having the product for minutes I figured out how to use it, and there were enough things to do with it to make it fun as my wife and I explored what it could do. All f this is done at an economically advantageous price to the consumer, too, with a camera that keeps growing on me.

Included with this is also a stand (shown in the photos), a novel concept that really makes a difference when you have to decide between hooking something to your computer or letting it set casually beside you, and it also comes with a carrying case. The stand went from novel to useful pretty quickly, the case turned out to be big enough to protect the camera while allowing it to be carried with ease, and the product something that really is what it says it will be.
    Overall, I've been really pleased.

  • Handy portable webcam with great video quality
    By A23ZNGL704AW7O on 2007-10-07
    DEVICE INSTALL/SETUP
Once again, Logitech makes install a breeze! The install and configuration wizards made setup a simple and quick task.

    MANUALS/DOCUMENTATION
The documentation was complete and simple to navigate. I spent little time to find the correct installation steps for the device.

    FUNCTIONALITY
The camera is as easy to use as it was to setup, and was easily accessible through both the Logitech software and 3rd party components that I have installed that are compatible with webcams (Skype, Comcast Videomail, Yahoo IM).

The size and weight of the webcam is ideal for use with a notebook, and comes complete with a travel case to protect the webcam while in a laptop case, etc.

My only disappointment with the Logitech QuickCam Pro for Notebooks is the notebook clip. Made for use with laptop PCs, the webcam has a clip that affixes it to the top of the notebook monitor. I found the clip to be somewhat flimsy in the way it secured the device to the laptop. If the attached USB cable is positioned a certain way, the webcam is easily pulled downward, rather than facing straight ahead.

The video quality is superb, as are the many features the camera is equipped with. Features include powerful color and brightness enhancements as well as more unusual additions such as upside down and mirror images.

    EASE OF USE
The interfaces for the webcam are intuitive, promoting ease of use. Integration with 3rd party software that support webcam use is seamless.

    QUALITY/DURABILITY
While this is a well-made device, it is a small portable unit, and the durability will depend largely on the abuse or care rendered by the individual user. Cautiously returning it to its travel case will prevent scratching of the camera lens. Tossing it loose in a full laptop case will likely cause undue wear and tear on the webcam, shortening its life.

    VALUE
If you are in the market for a great webcam that is portable and light, then this is a perfect value for you.

  • Great Little Webcam
    By A23VXI43BBZE64 on 2007-07-14
This is the perfect webcam for using with a laptop. The image quality is outstanding and works well even in low light. The cord is just long enough to connect up to a USB port without getting in the way and saves space when packed up in the tiny neoprene case that's included. Logitech even thought to include a handy mini velcro strap on the USB cord to keep things organized. There's a small and quite adequate microphone with the camera. The stand that is included with the camera breaks apart into three smaller pieces so it can also easily fit in one's gear bag. I'm a bit concerned it's not quite sturdy enough for constant assembly-and-disassembly. I can see using the stand quite a bit when attending lectures because it isolates the microphone from the sound of keyboard typing. I also own an Quick Cam Ultra Vision on a workstation at work. All in all, I'd say that this tiny webcam gives the huge Ultra Vision a good run for it's money on image quality and features, but is much more convenient for the road warrior. Logitech is obviously taking web cams seriously-- these are the two best webcams I have ever seen. They suddenly make video conferencing, video Skype, and OneNote video notes a must have.

  • A great little notebook camera, works well for chat not for action video webcasts.
    By A6VPK7X53QNAQ on 2007-09-18
Logitech has always been at the forefront for making web cameras and their products are plug and play. This one is no exception. You just plug it in and go! I've had the opportunity to use this product as my friend had it and now through Amazon's Vine program and I was impressed by the image quality.

The image quality on the Pro series has always been better than some of their other cheaper models and is perfect for people who may be using it for live meetings. The colors for this cam are true to life and the images are sharp. It's small (2.5 inches by 1 inch) and extremely portable and easily hooks on to the top of your notebook. I own the older version of this QuickCam Pro which has thinner prongs to hook it on the top of your notebook that caused the camera to fall over more easily. Logitech has improved the clip design that attaches the camera to the notebook for this model and it now stays securely on the top of the screen even if you are moving your laptop.

I've not had focusing problems with this webcam like some other reviewers have commented. In fact, the camera focuses automatically on you and performs very well in the night in low light conditions (you need to turn on the "Rightlight2" feature for the low light optimization). Just give it about 10-15 seconds to refocus if you move more than a foot away. It can be set on auto or manual focus through the software and you can also zoom in or out on your face with the same software. Sometimes, I just have had to adjust the focus a little bit to make the image sharper if I want to focus on a specific object (other than my face) that is not right in front of the webcam. You can set the camera to follow you and it keeps panning in that mode which can get a little too much for chat. I've used this webcam on Windows Live Messenger with surprisingly good image quality (really crystal clear) over a cable internet connection. There is one caveat though, if you want to use this webcam to perform some fast action in front of the camera it will be pretty blurry even though the refresh rate of the camera is up to 30 fps (30 frames per second). There may be a fix for this problem through the settings, but I have not found it and I got the same blur even when I turned off the auto focus.

The better resolution requires greater processor speed and works best with USB 2.0 so if you have an older laptop with a slower processor this will make your other applications freeze or slow down. They bundle the HP Photosmart software with this camera, which I don't use. I usually turn off the mic on the camera as my notebook has inbuilt mic.

It also has a video-effects feature in the software, where you can substitute a shark or an E.T. like creature (there are 2 more options) instead of your face and it mimics your facial expressions, so the people on the other side will see a shark saying "Hello" and winking!. That will funny to use once in a while but it does not work too well in low light, you'll need to have a brighter light on your face for this feature to work well. It comes with a softcase which is nice for travel and helps protect the lens. The included stand that comes in 3 pieces to increase portability is a nice touch as you may sometimes not want to have the camera on the top of your notebook, especially if you work at a desk. Like other webcams you can broadcast yourself live with this camera or even take quick pics upto 8MP but since there is no flash the pics will not be too great in low light. You can also make video clips of yourself for youtube or Amazon video reviews.

  • Great little add-on to a notebook
    By A1MAG8BDOVJHTT on 2007-10-14
As with other Logitech products (at least the four others that I have), there were no issues with getting this cam running on my notebook. This always pleases me, since my computer is pushing 6 years of age. :) It's small enough to fit into my carrying case without having to remove anything that I already cram in there, and its weight is negligible. That makes it perfect for travel use in my book.

I was not too impressed with the software that comes packaged with the cam, but it does get the job done. I was actually impressed with the image quality. Most webcams I have played around with were abysmal in their resolution. This one, however, did nearly as good a job as some digital cameras I have used. I attribute this to the optics, as I have had good experiences with Zeiss lenses on various microscopes in the past.

The cost is not too bad considering the quality of product that it delivers. I am too pleased with this little gem. :)

  • Don't buy if your notebook has a narrow width display bezel
    By A39KRR2TBRDGCX on 2008-06-24
I returned this product before even installing the driver.

While I suspect the quality of the electronics is great, the mechanical design could be improved. I bought the camera to use with a T43 ThinkPad notebook. Like most modern notebooks, the display bezel is rather thin, with only about 3/8 of an inch (1 cm) between the outer edge and the display. The mounting clip is near the center of the back of the camera. While it does allow the camera to swivel to center the image, it does not have any means to offset the mounting location. As such, about 3/4 of an inch (2 cm) of the camera body extended over the active area of the screen, blocking viewing anything which might be below it.

I suppose I could remove the camera when not in use, or move the active window around to avoid covering any information, but for a high end camera, I don't think that is a reasonable trade-off.

Bottom line - I would not recommend this camera for use on a notebook which has a narrow width bezel on the display.

  • Great little cam - the best I've seen
    By A3EBK74CIR5NRJ on 2007-08-29
I've tried out quite a few cams over the years, and this is the best I have used. The image is sharp, not grainy at all. The color is realistic and the included software makes adjustments to contrast, color saturation, etc., a breeze. It works very well in low light situations, thanks to the RightLight(tm)2 Technology.

The only reason I didn't give it 5 stars is because I found the auto-focus to be a little slow at times, but if you're just sitting in front of the PC it is not a concern. It could have been because I wasn't using enough light. Others' experiences may be different, and I wouldn't consider it detrimental enough not to use the cam. It's excellent overall.

The cam is tiny, even smaller than I expected. You can carry it in your pocket or use the little case they give you. It's only two inches by one inch and thin, too, even with the clip on the back.

  • QuickCam Pro for Notebooks
    By AWLHEYRPLHKVF on 2007-09-22
well made webcam. impressive image quality. most suitable for the road warrior. for at home or office use buy the logitech quickcam pro 9000. does not work well with latest version of skype. tried on 3 different machines running xp. will lock up computer everytime. works great with yahoo messagner and windows live messanger. windows live messanger has the best free video calling platform at this time.

  • Does what it says!
    By AC5UOO7YRH4IK on 2007-09-24
This webcam produces nice sharp images and the automatic focus is fabulous! The colors are rich and very true.
It works great in dim light and well lit areas. However in my opinion it works best if the room is evenly lit, either all dim or all bright. When I first turned it on it was evening and my room was dim except for the desk lamp which was sitting behind the camera and this caused some over exposure, this was easily solved by simply turning the lamp off.

The sound is also nice and clear, even from several feet away.I have a very soft voice and sitting about a foot and a half from the camera I can be easily heard, which is saying alot considering I constantly have to repeat myself to others.

Even the pictures are nice, about the quality of a mid grade digital camera. It also comes with a stand if you don't want to clip it to your monitor. The stand is a light weight plastic and has a grip pad on the bottom for extra support.

All in all I am very happy with this webcam and reccomend it to anyone who is looking for a nice compact webcam with excellent resolution.

  • Great camera for my iBook
    By A2DN89G3NERV6V on 2007-12-17
I bought this for my iBook G4 running Tiger and it works great. I later upgraded to Leopard without a problem. No setup necessary at all, just plugged it in and it was immediately found by iChat AV and PhotoBooth.

  • Great Travel WebCam
    By AFQGYXJW4XD86 on 2008-08-03
Compact size, superb image with autofocus, clear wide field of view. I am very happy with the video and sound quality. This WebCam replaces my HP 1.3M WebCam HP RD345AA 1.3 Megapixel Webcam for Notebooks.

INSTALLATION: 3 Stars [Update process could have been smoother]
Out of the box, the package warns you in several places not to plug the camera in until you have installed the software. They even put a small cover on the USB plug with a message on the cable. Very effective. I turned off AntiVirus protection per the instructions and then installed the software. I enabled automatically check for updates. It said no updates were found. Then I plugged in the camera. After full install, it said updates were available and gave me a link to the website where I was supposed to select my camera, operating system, file version, etc.... I closed that link and found the "Check for Updates" link within the software (Right click on the Logitech Camera icon in the System Tray). That worked smoothly without intervention from me. It updated my software from version 11.1 to 11.5.

    IMAGE: 5 Stars
The 2 MP camera produces very clear images that work great on Skype. Motion is no longer blurry, and the autofocus works great. The specifications say the autofocus will not work closer than 10 cm, but I find that if you move in slowly, it will work as close as 4 or 5 cm. This is great if you want to show something up close like an image from your digital camera or a label on a product.

    SOUND: 5 Stars
The built in Microphone combined with the Logitech noise reduction software eliminated all the echos and howling that I expereienced with my previous camera. I no longer have to yell to be heard. I can speak in a normal voice, or even from across the room, and my sound is crystal clear. Flawless.

    CLIP: 3 Stars
The clip for this device does not hold it securely. The camera can easily be pulled left or right if the USB cable is tugged even slightly. The rubber feet on the clip seem robust, yet it seems to be delicately balanced on the edge of my monitor. It doesn't fall off, but it is not a solid perch. The camera can be independently tilted up and down, but not left and right. There is no option for clipping the camera to the side of the monitor. The included stand works decently. It is made of three pieces that fit together and then the camera clips to the top. I placed the stand behind my laptop and it worked very well...peering over the top. Unfortunately, you cannot adjust height of this stand. I will probably not bring this on future trips.

    SPECIAL FEATURES: 2 Stars
There is a thin button across the top of the camera that allows you to take still photos. I found the camera button was too easy to press while trying to adjust the camera. And since the camera does not clip securely, trying to press this button almost requires two hands...one to steady the camera and the other to push the button. The included software allows Avatars to imitate your facial expressions in place of your real image. You can also add special effects like hats, arrows through your head, or goatee and mustache. When it works, this is a really neat feature that my kids loved! But, even though it was neat, something in that feature conflicted with my Symantec Antivirus. As soon as I turned antivirus back on, turning on these neat video features forced my machine into an immediate shutdown! I got a BSOD followed by a hard shutdown that I haven't seen since Win95! My machine hung in a state of limbo. The power button wouldn't turn it off (software driven) but the machine as powered up with a blank screen. I had to pull the plug and remove the battery to complete the shutdown. Each time I turned that feature on while using Antivirus, my computer gave me the BSOD and performed an immediate and hard shutdown. Needless to say, I no longer use these special features.

    AUTO FACE TRACKER: ?
This is a neat feature, but I do not find it useful. It really does a great job of following my face, but at what price? It seems like the other person would get seasick watching the background bob and weave as the software followed my head around. I think I am used to seeing the background stay put, while the person moves around in the frame. Anything else is disconcerting. Since I don't care for this feature, I did not rate it. You may find it entertaining.

    ACCESORIES: 5 Stars
The included soft-sided pouch, along with the velcro strap for wrapping the USB cord are nice touches as I plan to use this for travel. Why don't more manufacturers offer these nice touches?

    OVERALL REVIEW: 4 Stars
The video and sound are superb, and that is what really counts. But it seems that logitech could take one more step forward and improve the software to eliminate glitches with anti-virus, improve the software update process, and design a more robust clip. With a few minor changes this would easily be a 5-star item.

    RECOMMENDATION:
After trying several different brands and models, this one had the best price/performance. Cheaper ones left me wishing I had better video. More expensive ones had me wondering why they cost so much when this one offers everything I need. I would recommend purchasing this item.

  • Great little webcam for notebooks or desktops
    By A89LMQ6FPHWYF on 2007-08-28
Several months ago, I bought the older Logitech quickcam pro for notebooks and it was great, except it didn't have manual focus on it. Logitech improved that feature and more with this newer version of the same camera that came out in July. I was excited to see that they had changed that among other things! Just like my original quickcam pro, this one has the stand, which is good for sitting your cam when you aren't using it to clip on the top of your notebook. I have a toshiba 17" laptop, and this cam fits perfectly on the top of it. Have dark rooms? No problem... the low light technology on this webcam is the best I've seen. Over the course of 5 years, I have bought about 4 webcams and this cam by far is the best in dark room settings. The previous quickcam pro I have works great too... I use this cam to talk to friends on aim, and they have ichat. Works great. They can't believe all I have on my desk is one lamp on the low setting and they can see me perfectly clear, when they have to turn on all the lights in their room so I can see them! Another thing too is the 2 megapixel video .. it's pretty awesome. And you can take photos in 8 megepixels! There aren't many webcams out there that do that. If you buy a webcam with a 1 megapixel video or lower, you get what you pay for and it's going to look awful.

One thing about this camera, which I just asked the logitech customer support on their message boards about, is about the frame rate. It's supposed to be up to 30 frames, yet this one seems a bit slow. My other quickcam pro didn't seem to have any problems with the frame rate, yet this one does for some reason. It's almost a ghostly effect when you move. Which really isn't that big of a deal, but it would be nice if it didn't have that or you could adjust how fast it picks up the images it captures. Or maybe it's just a problem on my computer's end. Other than that this camera works great and I would recommend it to everyone.

  • Logitech QuickCam Pro for Notebooks
    By A2MWRTJ5S3SZKU on 2007-09-08
I bought this camera recently and i should admit i love it. I used to have a cheap Phillips webcam and the quality of it was bad. The picture came out as if i was in a basement. This camera has a very cool useful feature which is called the backlight and even if there is not enough light in the room it still looks DOOD, VERY GOOD.
The microphone is working very well too. You can sit away from the wbcam and still talk with your normal voice volume. It does not have any background noise.
Another nice feature of this camera is special effects. You can fool around, adding some funny hats, glasses, masks to your face or even become an alien (if smb wants to).It works with Skype, but you have to let this software be used with Skype. The program asks you if you want to let Logitech be used with Skype and if you say yes, you can enjoy this cool feature.
The best thing of all is the glass Carl Zeiss Lens. It really makes difference. My husband has pretty much same webcam but without such lens and the quality of picture is notisably worse.
The only thing i had trouble with is software, i had to install it twice. But i think it is somehow connected with the virus program in my computer, it is a crazy software and always interferes with all installations.
I like everything about this very camera, especially great picture quality and forgot to mention small design. It is small and cute and looks good on notebook.
If i needed to buy one more camera i would get the same one. Hopefully it was helpful.

  • Awesome video quality and color rendition, slow autofocus
    By AAZWL62QVNLLP on 2007-10-08
This webcam has a really incredible video quality. It works in very low light, even if the light only comes from the computer monitor. The color rendition stays accurate in low or high lighting conditions. The autofocus sometimes does not focus on the right subject and is rather slow compared to camcorders, but since this is a webcam it does not bothers me that much. Audio is crisp and echo free.
    Pros:
    - Excellent picture quality, way better than all non HD camcorders I know of.
    - Works very well in low light
    - Stunning video quality in skype
    - Small size, little bigger than 2 AA batteries side to side.
    - short cable reduce clutter for laptop and desktop with usb hub on the monitor
    - included mount for desktop
    - easy installation

    Cons:
    - slow and sometime inaccurate autofocus.
    - Software updates are slow and at present time Video effect (tracks your face to animate virtual avatars, or decorate your face with masks, glasses, etc) software conflicts with latest Microsoft hotfixes and returns an error message.

Conclusion: this is in my opinion the best webcam on the market today both in term of design and performance.

  • My Second-ever Webcam . . .This One is Fun!
    By A240FRPD4MEXND on 2007-09-28
Before I got the Logitech QuickCam Pro for Notebooks, my only experience with webcam occurred years ago. Then, the quality of the video was dreadful with bad lighting, weak colors, and pixilated images. Adding to my displeasure was a big, clunky webcam that took up unnecessary desk space - and I retired from webcams almost as soon as I used one.

Now I've changed my mind. This tiny camera (just a wee bit larger than a matchbox) produces images I can be proud of, sharp and colorful, correctly lit even with back lighting. Its close-ups are free of major distortion. The Carl Zeiss Company, long admired by serious photographers, makes this webcam's lens. The quality shows.

If there's a flaw in this webcam, it's the audio . . . acceptable but not stellar like the images. The range seems limited, cutting off extreme ends of the audible spectrum. However, because this may be due in part or whole to the quality of the sound card on my notebook, and because I am not an audio expert, I am unwilling to mark down the webcam.

The QuickCam Pro is good enough to produce serious business video applications or to use for casual conversations. I have not tested it on Skype because I do not use Skype.

    Suggestions for future versions:

    1. Include a longer cord on the camera so I can use it further away from my notebook.
    2. Create an entirely portable version, powered by batteries, that I can take anywhere without attaching it to my notebook at all.

Overall, a great little webcam that's loads of fun. Five stars!

  • Big surprise in a small package.
    By A1D3XQC2DIT on 2007-10-11
This thing is tiny...but does not skimp on performance.

I was hoping to be able to use this with my Apple Powerbook, but was unable. I believe an earlier version was compatible with MacOS, but this isn't.

Instead, I use it with my desktop PC, which is just fine by me. My one complaint is that while I understand that this is built for laptops, I still think most users could benefit from even a slightly longer cord.

With the popularity of the webcam growing exponentially (due largely to the explosion of post-your-own-video websites) I have been exposed to countless videos made on webcams. By comparison, I am really quite impressed at the clarity produced by the QuickCam Pro.

I love the "avatar" features provided with the software. Being able to turn yourself into a shark/alien/cat or give yourself a mustache/glasses/etc are great ways to delight children and grandchildren when you can't be with them.

This is an impressive device that delivers quality results.

  • Good product. Works with MAC with additional software
    By A1UFBGG8QI0KPX on 2007-12-01
Bought this so I could read my 2 year old her book while on the road.

Using it with a Mac Ibook. Had to install additional USB driver software to use with Ichat.

All in all a great product, but you have to do some homework to make it work with a Mac.

Given that the pace of technology is rapidly out-stripping itself, it is getting harder and harder to stay caught up, let alone understand and competently (and completely) use the technology you may have.

This little cam is an excellent solution: a classy item that does most of the hard work for you. The picture is always crisp and self-correcting, the image adjusts to pretty much any lighting conditions, and there's even a user-friendly control panel that lets fussier owners manipulate virtually every aspect of the device. As far as pure mechanics go, the Logitech QuickCam is pretty much everything you could hope for or want, short of a lens that automatically removes blemishes and fixes your hair for you.

Actually, this cam isn't far off from that, either. The programming includes a whole host of avatars, facial additions, fun filters, and video masks that, while mostly goofy, are also endlessly amusing. With one-button recording capabilities and an astonishingly thorough range of connectivity, this clever little unit will appeal as much to the child in you, as to the techno-phile.

Clipable to the backs of most slimmer notebooks (but packaged also with a mostly-sturdy free-stand for those of you with thicker models), the Logitech QuickCam Pro with its crystalline clarity and ease of use will make you wonder why you ever bothered with its grainy and glitchy predecessors. And although it may not come with Anti-Acne technology or Corrective Cowlick computational abilities, it'll definitely make you look better than you ever have before.

  • Painful to set up especially with SKYPE, but once you're done it's great
    By A1P3WDG0UJNSG7 on 2008-02-14
I bought one for me and one for my parents so they could see the grandkids growing up. I set up mine first so I could walk them through the process. I have a different computer than my parents do, so the steps to get it to work were not identical. I had to install the camera software, install Skype, then install updates to the camera software (rebooting the computer in between each install).

In order to get my parents to work, we had to go through the same process multiple times ... their anti-virus software tried to block the installation at several points, and we had to work around that. It took multiple telephone sessions with them and a lot of frustration to get it done.

But having said that, now that it's all set up and running, the quality of the video is GREAT. My brother has a cheaper Logitech bought from Walmart, and the picture quality is horrible. I'm going to try and convince him to get one of these instead (and then hope that he has the patience to walk through the steps to get it working).

  • Great with my PowerBook
    By A3VPK6AM7DTMSV on 2008-03-23
Just plugged into my Apple PowerBook G4 (pre-Intel) and it worked right away...without installing software on disc. Did have to change the audio settings in iChat under Preferences, but that was it. Was going to buy iSight, but it's too expensive...this one is smaller and travels nicely.

  • Does what it is supposed to
    By A1V3IITQ7IME0Z on 2008-03-25
I bought this for a Mac and it does work (OS 10.4). It is quite portable and even has a small carrying case so it can go with you on trips. Two small problems with it: The clamp that holds it to the top of the laptop does not hold it well; it is easily bumped off or askew. but it comes with a stand to set it on a level surface (if you have one). Second, the signal is a little slow. A hand motion -- even slow -- comes across as a blur. This may be because my computer is only 1.42 GHz speed, but that should be plenty given the 1.5 gigs of memory. Not sure if it will give more motion on a faster machine. Not likely. However, the Windows version does allow for use of the software tricks that work onlyon Windows.

  • Quick, before it's obsolete!
    By A12BT9VFZYVH0Q on 2008-03-28
This device arrived quickly, and installed very easily since I followed the directions and installed the software first, then the hardware! The pictures are clearer and higher resolution than previous QuickCam's I've owned. The built-in mounting clamp works even on the slipery vinyl-coated notebooks, and the stand-alone tower included was an unexpected extra. I especially like the ability of this webcam to "recognize your head" and follow you around. I also had no difficulty setting this up as a surveilance camera on my home network. But the newer notebook computers are coming with built-in cameras, so these add-ons may not be needed much longer.

  • Really clear and really small
    By A1YLKXFFC7UPWQ on 2008-04-23
I'm using this camera for travel. It's really small. The lens looks very high quality. People I have tested this with have reported very good results and say it looks better than the one built into my mac or the other one built into my Sony. This is a very nice product and it comes with a nice neoprene carry case.

  • Great Purchase
    By A2Z12UZ0B5LEOL on 2008-06-01
This is our second webcam. The first one was not working with Windows Vista and gave the laptop a virus! Logitech QuickCam Pro is Very easy to install and it actually works with Windows Vista. The only issue we have is that the sound with skype keeps echoing and repeating itself. Our laptop has a AtholonX2 processor which should not be that much inferior to the Celeron Dual. But I am not a computer person. The camera was easy to install, works great. Love it!!!

  • Worst design, so-so software, great quality
    By A3MC8H7V03TUI4 on 2008-07-10
First bought a Microsoft webcam first but didn't work well with Yahoo IM! Then bought this after reading reviews.

    Pros:
    - video quality is good.
    - you can create quick video files.

    Cons:
    - I have a Dell and an IBM laptop. The clip is not working well. Very poor design. It keeps moving from the edge of the screen. The grip is not strong either.
    - You will not be able to use this webcam with a regular LCD since the screen edge thickness is more than 1/2 inch.
    - Their software is very buggy. It takes over the Mic input. I have tried many combination in the last 2 days and as soon as I connect my headset, it stops working in Skype and Yahoo and MSN.
    - Design again: there is no way to roate the webcam. No rotation axis.
    - The great Lens (Zeiss) is very much unprotected. They should have created some kind of concave design like the Microsoft ones.

I still can't believe they missed the clip design that bad...

I do recommend Logitech but not this model.

  • Really great webcam

I am very happy with this webcam now if i would just use the thing.
