  • Review on the goodies that you get with the game...

    By A2PSC7LUNIDEAH on 2008-05-01
My review isn't about the game, but about what you get with the special edition:

Duffel Bag: Medium-Sized, black bag with a white Rockstar logo outside and a yellow-pattern lining on the inside...surprisingly very eye-catching design. This will make a great gym bag.

License Plate: Not as hard as the real license plate, but still sturdy enough to put on your wall or hit somebody with it.

Safe Deposit Box(with 2 keys): I'm very impressed with this item! I expected some cheap, easy-to-break deposit box, but it is very sturdy and hard to get into. I wouldn't trust my valuables with it, but its a nice box to use in your room to keep sensitive items away from other eyes. Somebody with a screwdriver and some time on their hands would be able to pry it open eventually, but still very stylish and modest safe deposit box.

RockStar keychain: 3-D letter "R" logo of Rockstar, which measues about one square inch.

"The Art of GTA" handbook: a very nice cloth hardcover booklet that shows how the game was made. Very interesting material inside.

"The Music of GTA4" CD: 16-tracks on this CD that comes with a carboard sleeve.

1 Free Month of XBOX Live! This wasn't listed as part of the offer, so I was surprised to see this. It is NOT A TRIAL and you can go to your Live account and simply add a month of XBOX Live Gold to your paid time.

Bottom Line: If you are a fan of GTA and have some money to spend, this is definetely worth an extra $30, especially with an extra month of XBOX Live included.

  • Game of the Year? Can I get a hell yes?

    By A3K91X9X2ARDOK on 2008-04-30
    Packaging first:

You get the game itself, a small duffel bag, a small but informative hardcover art book, a cd with music selections from the game and my favorite item, a safety deposit box complete with a pair of keys and a cool Rockstar Games logo keychain. This in itself makes the special edition of GTA IV worth purchasing over the standard edition.

    As for the game?

Consider me blown away. As if the movie quality story of the single player mode isn't enough, now you can experience the thrills and spills of Liberty City with 15, count 'em, 15 other people (a first for GTA games on consoles) and it's unlike any other multi-player experience I've ever had. From the moment I went online with this title, I was instantly won over by the sheer insanity on display before me. If you are familiar with the GTA series at all, then you already know how dynamic and unpredictable events can be. Now imagine what a room full of 16 people adds to that formula of uncertainty and you have in your hands a game that will give you hundreds of hours of gameplay in your future. The graphics and sound are a new benchmark for the series and the amount of detail in your surroundings is enough to make you want to stop and smell the roses. The soundtrack especially, is pure genius. If there's one nitpick to be made, it may be that the controls aren't pitch perfect (especially the cover system, which almost works in your enemies favor when you wind up taking cover on the wrong side of the wall you're against). Still, the controls are still pretty great in their own right, tiny quirks aside. You'll still be able to do just about everything you want to in the game.

Seriously, if this is the future of multiplayer and videogames in general, I'm almost afraid to see what Rockstar will serve us next. This game is a five star title all the way. The best part is that it lives up to all the hype that has preceded it and is without a doubt, money well spent.

  • Come now people...let's drop some of the bias please.

    By A37QUQPYFMR9Y9 on 2008-05-02
    OK.

Background: I am not a Grand Theft Auto fan. I'm not clouded by this game, nor does this game "own me". The only GTA games I ever beat were San Andreas (because it was just too well done) and Liberty City Stories on PSP (because it was the first PSP game to allow custom soundtracks which made the game all the more fun). I bought this game for one primary reason: I know it'll get banned, or severely edited, and I want to make sure I have an untouched version.

If you want the quick and dirty, skip to the very bottom.

I decided to actually give the game a fair chance to see what the hype was about, and from there, decide whether or not the game was worth every penny I spent.

I did buy the special edition from Amazon, pre-ordered the day before release date, got it today as I should have. I was very impressed with the packaging and the speed with which I got the game; I noted some others didn't have the same success, so I feel fortunate. Let's go down the list of special goodies, in order of worst to best (IMO).

SOUNDTRACK: OK, there's over 200 tracks in the game, yet we get a 16 track CD. Mind you, I wasn't expecting to get a full box set of songs, but why bother with a soundtrack at all if it's not going to be more than this?

ARTBOOK: Very nice, but I couldn't help but feel underwhelmed. I mean, I look at art books like those of Persona 3 and Growlanser and then I look at this and wonder if Rockstar understands how to truly wow its customers. It's not bad at all, just not as great as I would expect. I mean obviously a lot of art went into this game, so when I see just three wireframes of Liberty City I have to ask myself where the rest of the drawings are.

DUFFEL BAG: It's not what you think. It's actually quite small, and thin. Probably would suit storing stuff when you go to the gym or something. I wouldn't rely on it for much.

KEY CHAIN: It's a key chain, nothing special. Letter "R" and a small star. Good quality though, nice build, better than the one that came with Growlanser for sure, but not as nice looking.

LOCK BOX: Yes, someone with a bit of strength could pop this bad boy open with a butter knife, but so what? IT's a cool addition and a really nice concept. (FYI, that's why the box is so big, it barely fits in there)

LICENSE PLATE: Amazon says it's exclusive to them but is it really? Dunno. It's nice though - if California weren't so Draconian when it came to vehicles I would put it on my car.

Negatives are the lack of a "Making Of" disc: hopefully they'll put those clips up for FREE on Xbox Live - then this is a moot point, and, as usual for GTA games, a very lacking instruction booklet.

As for the game I'll just go through the various complaints people have and see if I agree or disagree. How's that?

POP-IN: Agree. It's not bad and it's not a deal breaker, IMO. In fact in the time I played the game I didn't notice it all that much. It's really when you're going faster than the loading engine can keep up with, which isn't often considering most of the cars are rather slow and the traffic is dense enough that you can't speed through like you could with the other GTAs.

JAGGIES: Agree. Again, not too bad and not a deal breaker.

BLURRY: Agree. It's not as bad as people are making it out to be though. Like in Lost Odyssey and Kameo where the entire background is blurred and it has a realistic feel to it, this is more subtle. It's not a filter, it's more like the textures start out degraded and then slowly improve as you approach various things in the distance. It's NOT that big of a deal, only videophiles would even notice, really.

FRAMERATE: Agree. Again, not that bad, and not nearly as much as Lost Odyssey. There is just some slight stuttering that occurs at times, it's noticeable but not a deal breaker.

MUSIC: Agree. The selection of songs was poor this time around. I pretty much keep going back to the jazz station because it's the only one I can really tolerate. If you're open to indie music you'll probably find some things you like here. Also there are some big name artists with little known songs (that aren't that great), i.e. Nas, so if you're open to new types of songs from established artists, you'll find some good stuff here.

GRAPHICS: You know, I don't know why these got a 10. Not to beat a dead horse, but I can think of at least 4 other games with better graphics just off the top of my head: Bioshock, Lost Odyssey, Gears (different art direction, I know), and Fight Night Round 3. It's not the city, the city is fine...it's everything that's animated about the city: cars, Niko, characters, bikes, etc. Even trees don't look that great. And it's often hard to make out certain objects like when there's a fence or something. Additionally, the text on the cell phone is a dark font which is hard to read against the navy green background when you're more than 5 feet away from the screen (which you should be to keep from getting nauseous while playing).

OK ReV, so what's the good news?

The good news might be your bad news. To me, I like a game that sticks to a formula. Some hate that - some love games to always change. GTAIV sticks to the tried and true formula of the past PS2 games, with one small twist: Now you've got choices. You can make decisions on whether you're going to help or harm someone, save or desert someone, etc. So in a way it's taking the concept of Fable and slapping the GTA world around it, if you can envision that. Don't know if I care for the choice part yet, but it does keep things lively.

Everything else you love about GTA is here to the n'th degree. I'm sure you heard about the fact that you can now do more...uh...'more' with the hookers, plus the various engines for gunplay and weapons have been improved. Sadly, it's a LOT more difficult to control both Niko and the various vehicles. With Niko, he now walks by default, and you have to hold A to get him to jog (what was the default in the previous games) and tap A repeatedly to get him to run (what was hold A in the previous games). With the vehicles the buttons seem to have been switched around or made less effective. I had a very difficult time just steering in the city, and I still haven't been able to power slide around corners. It told me about handbrake controls, but I could swear I could do it with just the regular brake provided I was at the right speed, before. I actually failed a mission because of that.

    So, in summary:

    - There are things you will need to get accustomed to. Some things are different, some things are the same. Some things were improved, some were a blatant step back. It's anyone's ball game whether you'll truly enjoy the game for yourself or not. One thing's for sure...no matter what reviews come out, no matter what reviews get posted here, and no matter what a stripper tells you, THIS IS NOT A PERFECT GAME. It's a good game with its flaws, just like any other. If you can accept that, you'll want to buy this game.

  • Endless Possibilities

    By AMTKXIF19E861 on 2008-04-30
I am sure most people know and have heard of the Grand Theft Auto series. So skipping sraight to the point, this game is fun from the beginning and never stops. It builds from all the previous tittles and adds so much more details and realism its astonishing. Regardless if you like progressing through an actually interesting and engaging storyline(1st time for GTA) or creating havoc in Liberty City, you will not be dissapointed. Thats what everything boils down to. If you want to know about some "cool" (aka violent/destructive) things you can do, read on.
What brings this game to life is the amazing amount of detail. Just pay close attention and you will see civilians quarrel, car accidents happen, people being arrested, etc. all without the player having to do anything. In one instance, I recall accidentaly punching a female civilian only to have all the other civilians come after me, out. Outnumber I decided to run only to be chased by a small mob. So I decided to hijack a car. As I was getting into the car, one of the civilians I was being chased by reached in. I began to accelerate the car and the door slammed shut on the civilians arm clamping him to the door. When I noticed him dangling with him arm jammed in the door I decided to swerve next to a car. The civilian's body made impact with the oncoming car which succesfuly removed him from the car and splattered blood on the oncoming car's windshield. If you crash your car into explosives, you will see a beautiful slow motion view of your exploding car in midair. Its movie-like details that come to life that truly awe the player. And although this may sound too violent, etc. its the main reason people play GTA. open-end world. Aside from all the cool details one may discover through the game, the develepors also fixed many of the annoying details of past GTA games. Free im is now possible, the there is an enjoyable multiplayer, you cant dissapear from the cops simply by driving into a pay-n-spray, and many more. Parents, if the scene described above disturbs you, then go for mario kart. Everyone else, you will never run out of things to do, and the fun never stops. GTA IV is sanbox king.

  • Welcome to Liberty City**Special Edition Review

    By A22AD8M2SSOFHJ on 2008-05-03
Niko is new to America. Brought by hopes and promises of his cousin Roman about how wealthy he is. Unfortunately for Niko he quickly finds the stories to be lies. Grand Theft Auto IV starts as others in the series with an anti-hero. Getting involved in doing the wrong things is all to easy in this game. From the very get go you are learning that living the American life can be difficult and in order to get your story going you must break the law. For the most part Niko doesn't have a problem with this since he has become raw after being a soldier in war.

GTA IV has probably one of the darkest stories so far in the series. This is not the type of game you will play and comment on how cheerful the story is. For those of you who have played previous GTA games you will notice many similarities. From the gameplay mechanics to the story line. Although people who are new to the GTA series will find how simple the learning curve really is in this game. The game gives you an incredible amount of tutorials and guides you thru your first several missions making things easy to understand. Most features in this game are simple to understand and keep this game from getting over anyones learning curve.

What has made the Grand Theft Auto series so superb is the story telling. Excellent voice acting with intense and exciting missions make GTA IV a true winner. From the first moment on you will notice that you aren't really playing a game as much as taking part in an intense crime drama. Think Sopranos from the former Soviet Union. The game is mission based and gives you the ability to choose what you want to do at any given point. You meet numerous characters who are all about committing crimes and they give you certain jobs. Of course these jobs increase your reputation and help progress you thru the story. Along the way you will find numerous characters. Some you will like and others you will probably want to get rid of yourself.

This game has further evolved ideas from previous GTA games. Niko can not only date one woman at a time but several. It's really up to you. Just remember how in real life this can be time consuming it can also be in a game. You will have woman calling and texting you if you ignore them to long. Then comes taking them out for dates. Each woman has different tastes and interests and it's up to you to know where to take them. Some of the activities can actually be fun like playing darts or pool as these mini games do have learning curves. The girl you are with will respond to your success or failure at these games. Obviously there are numerous other activities in wonderful Liberty City. Also it's important for Niko to accessorize and finding the best clothing to wear is important. Image is everything as as you progress you get access to better clothes. The car mechanics have improved in this game but don't expect to have similar handling to a racing game. What is cool to look at is the amazing detail they have put into the car damage. Every little ding makes an impact on the car you are in. Lastly is the music selection. An incredible 200 songs are available in Liberty City to listen to on the radio. Numerous radio stations including the talk ones belt out hit songs and comedic advertisements. Niko even has the ability to watch t.v. They covered every detail in this game and it shows.

As if a single player mode that will take you 30 to 40 hours to beat is not enough there is also online multiplayer. Yes you and 15 others can play on the beautiful streets of Liberty City. The multiplayer is truly open ended for your enjoyment. Several game modes plus the ability to create your own multiplayer. You can also invite seven friends to take on eight others. It's easy to say this game will be enjoyed for months on end. For those of you choosing between the PS3 and 360 version you may have to consider the 360 will have it's own unique content in 6 months available on XBOX LIVE.

It's easy to be impressed by Liberty City. It's as close to New York City as any game has ever got. From the pedestrians that make up the neighborhood to the realistic design of the buildings. The weather changes and the days progress realistically. This is one of those games where you can just take it in and enjoy the scenery. In Grand Theft Auto you have the freedom to do what you want. This game is intended for adults. The language and content can be mature most of the time. Although that is at a parents discretion. I wouldn't suggest this game for everyone. Although I would suggest it for those who have enjoyed previous Grand Theft Auto games. I would also suggest it for those who enjoy mafia or crime movies. This game will have you sitting back and enjoying the incredible story. Just don't forget that it's your story to play.

**Now for those of you asking. Is the special edition good for you??? If you are a GTA diehard fan I would say yes. If you enjoy getting extras for extra money I would say yes. The Special Edition comes with a mediocre soundtrack album featuring songs you may have never heard before. You also get a good quality lock box with a duffle bag. In the box is a rockstar key chain. I now own this stuff. It's nice but I don't think it's of the best value.

  • GTA IV All Flash no Thrill
    By A3BMUBBZ271QQ1 on 2008-05-09
OK everyone Grand Theft Auto IV is given a perfect 10 rating by Gamespot and IGN. This perfect 10 rating should not have been given... It most likely deserves a 7.5 to an 8.5. Don't get me wrong GTA IV has stellar graphics and a great storyline but from there everything goes bad. The new highly hyped up aiming is some of worst i've ever played with in a shooter game. Once your locked on and your target is dead your still locked on, you have to disengage and then find another target, this becomes extremely annoying and hard when you're pinned down against 10 bad guys, who are all firing their weapons at you at the same time. I made a huge mistake and should have rented this game first. When you play GTA IV for the 1st time you will be amazed by the realistic feel of driving and how RockStar games have made Liberty City look like my hometown of NYC. But after about 5 to 10 hours of driving around, doing missions, and getting further into the storyline all the hype of why you bought the game wears off and you find yourself with a semi fun video game. Another extremely bad flaw to this game is Driveby shootings. you have to be right next to the fleeing car or person on the street because there is no aiming in drive bys. Seems realistic that you can't aim during drive bys but for a game you should be able to. If your far away in a car and your chasing someone while they're in a car and your some what far back good luck in shooting them down because you will hit nothing. This game is not worth 89.00 dollars let alone the regular price of 60.00. The Special Edition has a carry on money bag not the advertised Duffle Bag. It has a Licencse Plate which can only be used in certain states... New York is not one of them. The art book is a little 15 page flip through of early art of what the characters and places were going to look like, the art book is nowhere near as good as a Mass Effect Art Book with real detail in the Art chosen to show off. The only good thing about the S.E. of GTA IV is the Bank Vault Case which is good for show since all the locks are the same and if you know someone with the same case then you can say goodbye to w/e valuables you have in there. Rent the Game first, that's all i can say really. If you're happy with it 50 hours later then this review is not for you, but if you find yourself playing the game for a short time and quickly discover it is all Flash and No Thrill then you will find that Rock Star Games has some how paid off Game Spot and IGN to give Perfect 10s. When you play games like Gears of War or Bio Shocks and they don't receive 10s and you wonder why GTA IV gets a 10 then your as lost as I am...

  • Brilliant
    By A1WITZ9SYRBNLY on 2008-04-29
This has to be my favorite open sandbox game I've played since Crackdown. Everything is just stunning! Pretty graphics, amazing AI, game environment has realistic weather and day/night cycles, and a story line that really gets you interested. Multiplayer is also awesome, 16 person Team Deathmatch using the whole city as your playing field? AWESOME. Of course all this is just the top of the iceburg.

  • The Game of our time
    By A38I8CV3RG0BHF on 2008-04-30
Each generation has its own videos, music, art, books and whatnot, to define it.

With modern society, games have started to become more of a culture and attraction than anything in the past. Anymore, a good game can easily compete, if not outsell, novels and cinematic bigscreen movies.

They are no longer animated-pixel "toys" to the modern world, and can tell a tale and show a world just as vast and creative as those in a movie or book.

And for a game like Grand Theft Auto 4, it not only disproves games are just for nerdy gamers, but its not much of a game at all, as it is a work of art. Quite simply, its the most stunning rendition of reality and the modern world in the face of crimes, gangs, and dilluted dreams of the "land of the free". As soon as you start the game, you will notice the character, Nikko, is alive, and the world around you breathes and moves like a typical stroll down a major city or coastline.

I could go on and on into detail, missions, control, story, but whats the point? It's so perfected, that nothing needs to be said other than "How did they do it?". It's literally breathtaking and awe-inspiring.

I've played 5 hours of it since yesterday, but I can can stand here and produly proclaim that this game is going to be the game that defines this era.

I used to beleive it was the original 1993 id software release DOOM that defined everything for the gaming community, and open up gateways for infinite possibilities for generations to come, but where as it changed the way we perceived and would play games, and what could be permitted in them, Grand Theft Auto 4 redefines by adding life to a game, the ability to step into your character and everything becomes suddenly aware as if you were there yourself.

Do yourself a favor, buy this game. And if you dont have a console to play it on, buy one, and experience it for yourself.

  • THIS GAME IS BAD
    By A1KWNWF48XMKVD on 2008-04-29
This game is bad expecially the special edition that comes with the duffle bag,the deposit box,a keychain, artbook,,and the game itself.

  • Kind of a bore-fest
    By A10PCTJ1P5TUW2 on 2008-05-14
Rockstar eliminated so many elements from previous GTA installments that I feel they took a step backward.
    -driving is really goofy
-side missions like Pizza Boy, Taxi, Ambulance, and Firefighter are gone
-there is no bonus for getting all the secret packages
-you accumulate a lot of money but there is nothing to spend it on
-the vehicle list is significantly smaller
-there is no customization whatsoever... you get to pick from about three outfits
-no more tricking out your car... honestly, Saint's Row had a better vehicle storage system

  • Masterpiece of the Video Game medium
    By A21CY7OMNCTDUX on 2008-05-02
Never before in a Game have you really felt like the character was really alive, at least, not like this. Immediately as the credits roll, you are Niko Bellic, a rough around the edges man with a past he's trying to escape for a new life in Liberty City. There's something to him, the sound of his voice, his body language, that even while you aren't playing, or even as you are, there's another layer there, something that seems-believe-it-or-not, very very human, as if you were watching and controlling a real tiny person trapped within your television set.
I find myself drawn to thinking about him and the other characters while I'm not even playing the game, while I'm at work, or on the John. The game is THAT captivating. It has a wonderful style and flair and the story is Oscar-worthy easily, if not some of the best dialogue I've heard spoken. It's both funny and serious, a dramatic satire of America, laced with the same poison that runs through our own culture.
The Graphics and Game play are amazing, and like some people have said, the only drawback is a little problem with the cover system, but it's easy to forget when you are so captivated by the sights and sounds of Liberty City.
This is the game to define the series, a fully meta-human experience, deeper Game play than I've ever seen or thought possible in a piece of interactive art. This game is pure magic, crafted by the some of the most talented artists.
Take the rough ride through GTA IV. Young or Old, it's for the mature mind looking for that next great story, the next level of Art & Entertainment in our times. It makes other games obsolete. Buy Grand Theft Auto IV, you won't be disappointed.

  • Ironing out the flaws, a great game!
    By A39W3263A9HCMN on 2008-05-09
So as much as I love this game, what are the "flaws" I mentioned in the title? Well, let me start off with the bad news first:

-The vehicle control sucks. Every time you try to stop the car, it spins around. This is really frustrating, becaus sometimes you'll try to stop yourself from getting a wanted level.

-The hand-to-hand combat system is a real joke. You can seriously play through the hand-to-hand combat parts blind-folded. All you have to do is smash the X button several times. The character moves on his own.

-The game is a bit too short. About 6 hours in, you're already halfway through.

So why did I give this game 4 stars? Well, here goes:

-The graphics are amazing. They look realistic, and are a HUGE step up from GTA 1-3, VC, SA, and LCS.

-The voice acting is incredible! Niko sounds amazing, as does Michelle.

-The music is great too, especially the intro music.

-The gameplay is great, although a bit repetitive, still very great.

-The ending is the best video game ending in years.

Allthogether, if you look past the flaws, then this is an amazing game, and GTA in its top form.

  • One of the best looking games I've seen
    By A1ONE7JT2RIEG4 on 2008-05-03
I got this game because of the last GTA for the Xbox, I really enjoyed it so I pre-ordered this one from where I work. I'm very impressed by the graphics and I do agree that the car handing take some time to get use it but all in all I am really enjoy this game.

  • badder and better
    By A5X0G8LTO1J9E on 2008-04-29
Another highvoltage GTA game, this game is great and fun. In this game you have more quility and different stuff like flying in a helicopter, setting a waypoint to trace your destination, have a girlfriend and take her out, and drive a jetmax while on water you could'nt do those stuff in the other GTA games. This game easily outshines the other GTA games with it's gameplay and performence and the grapic is great and real looking to. So to use a helicopter whenever you want just dial the code numbers in niko's cell phone and the numbers is 3595550100 and the helicopter will appear sweet uh... yeah i no. To get the GTA1V cheats type www. GTA1V cheats.com and there will be a list of GTA1V cheats to unlock a jetmax, gain more health, helicopter, remove stars from your star meter when the police are after you, gain police stars if your a maniac, change wheater, and weapons, the rest is in the GTA1V cheats. The story mode is fun not hard but fun, it can be a little pain but its not hard its really fun. This game is more experienced then the other GTA games with relistic grapics better view and different stuff like going in stores going out with your girlfriend and play bowling, going to the bar, and playing pool, and playing darts, a more high quility experienc then just steeleing cars fighting other people and shooting. So this game is fun and great.

  • Kicken' R*
    By A22KVQRVAX0OEI on 2008-05-06
This product is way cool. The extras that it comes with are sweet, like the music cd; it is very entertaining, and the lock box is embossed and it is also matte black with a R* keychain inside. Actually, all of the stuff, apart from the License plate, is in the lock box. I used to be a Hloa 3 guy, now I've switched back to GTA. The physics and the player and NPC intactions are off the hook. The controller layaout is intuitive if youve played an xbox game before. My only beef is that he dosent get hungry, though you are going out alot, so he never needs to eat. I think that it would be a nice addition if he got hungry every day and you had to feed him. Other than that, it is a comical as any previous GTA game and realistic more so than any Sim game. Very well put togther.

  • Endless Replay Value, Limitless Environment
    By A3C0JYHB7TAA7D on 2008-05-22
This game has only ONE thing wrong with it. And in an entire game, that's still worthy of a 5 star rating. What's that one thing? The camera controls while driving (and ONLY while driving) take a while to master, but it is masterable, so I'm not taking off a ton of points for it.

The story mode is fun, freemode is awesome and multiplayer is mindblowingly phenomenal. This is, by far, the best installment of Grand Theft Auto to date.

I'll just give GTAV a 3 star right now because I don't believe it could EVER live up to it's predecessor. You hear me Rockstar? You raised the bar. Now don't ever slip below it or you'll be like those one-good-album bands whom no one recalls the name of anything else they've made. GTAIV, however, has earned you a spot in the Gamer History Books. Well done.

  • simply amazing

It's here, it's here, it's finally here. Grand Theft Auto IV has finally arrived after what seems like eons of anticipation, and Rockstar's flagship franchise doesn't disappoint to say it lightly. Putting you in the shoes of European illegal immigrant Niko Bellic, you are back in Liberty City, although this is a much different Liberty City than the one you remember. This Liberty City is so incredibly detailed and constructed that you will often find yourself in complete awe. Not since GTA III has an open world environment been so innovative in its scope, and never before has there ever been this kind of interaction. At its core, the tried and true GTA gameplay remains, but there is so much more to do: ranging from dating (yes, dating!), surfing the in-game internet, seeing a comedy show, watching TV, and listening to the radio among other things. Besides all that, there is a story here, and it is indeed one of the most engrossing and compelling stories you will ever find in a video game. Niko is no ordinary crook like we've seen before, and ends up being one of the most fully realized video game protagonists in quite some time. The rest of the residents of Liberty City are wonderfully designed as well, all helping Liberty City feel like a living, breathing place. Gunplay elements have been much improved upon as well, as have the driving mechanics and overall controls. Combined with a 16 player multiplayer mode, Grand Theft Auto IV is a glorious, instant classic that more than deserves your attention. If there are any downsides to GTA IV, and this is just me being nitpicky for the sake of being nitpicky, is that there are a few graphical hiccups to be found now and then, but definitely nothing major or all that noticable. Other than that, GTA IV is nearly perfect in every regard. All in all, Grand Theft Auto IV is an incredibly stunning achievement of modern gaming that must be played to be believed. Ranking as possibly one of the finest and most immersive video games to ever see the light of day, Grand Theft Auto IV is a masterpiece that should be checked out in the very least, even if you aren't a fan of the series. This special edition is worth the extra cash, coming with a horde of goodies that will make any GTA fan happy. Most notably is the bonus CD soundtrack, featuring some excellent selected songs from the game.

  • Rockstar Listen Up!!
    By AHNYRCBNPYS9P on 2008-05-23
Since everyone copies GTA, I think RS could look around and take some of the better ideas other games have, not just sandboxes. I think Scarface and Saints Row are the standout clones of the past. Here's a couple I can think of:

    1. After you finish the story allow a separate "mission select" game save where you can pick and choose any mission in the game, not unlike Rainbow Six Vegas' "scene selection" premise. Just minus out the before and after cut scenes to basically make it like the assassin missions.

    2. Allow direct saving via the cell phone at any time. It's lame to have to go to the apartment and watch the little sleeping scene to just save. I know that it auto saves but I've had it lose some of my save before to have to redo 2 or more missions after it supposedly auto saved. I don't think this would make the missions too easy as most of the time you cant really use the phone during missions anyways, someone will show up and shoot you before you get to it.

    3. Come out with a simple easy to use custom mission creator pack for modders that is cross platform after the PC version comes out. With XBoxLive and whatever PS3 uses for online, people could buy/sell/give away created missions/scenarios. It would be a great value and XBL/PS3/Rockstar could charge a small commission for the transaction to get their piece. I wish they would have done expansion packs for San Andreas in the long years between games or had an easy to use modders pack. Obviously this would have to have some sort of disclaimer as to the "hot coffee" stuff, but come on this is GTA. Most people would agree that murder is a LOT worse than sex anyways, but the authorities in the country have it grossly backwards.

    4. Have some more sophisticated missions that don't just involve go here/kill everyone/run from police scenario we all know is basically the GTA MO. Look at Assassin's Creed or Thief and get some idea. I wish there was more sniping missions/side missions. Don't get me wrong, the combat in this game is much more satisfying than previous games with the cover system. Not sure exactly because I don't have specific examples but I think you can just look around at other games and get ideas.

    5. Make a simple all or nothing decision about the customization. None of this half way stuff like in 4, more like the all the way like in SA. I suppose the big thing is by about half way you have way more money than you can use to buy anything, why can't I scrimp to buy an Infernus any time I want? Or advanced weapons(M4 scope/rocket launcher, laser pointer)? I'd like to trick out my Comet/Porsche with better rims/acceleration/brakes and a custom uploaded paint job. I want a phone that has more options like a keyboard so I can see the internet anywhere or watch the TV anywhere. What about a 500000 store only non-spawning race car that handles like an F1 car?

This is a must have game and is awesome but needs to be developed more like the post GTA3 versions.

  • Best in it's class.

Best game of the series so far. Hard, gritty, violent, brutal and unforgiving. Play by the rules and be docile like lambs being led to the slaughter, or play it like you stole it, beat it, stab it, pummel it, shoot it, run down peds on your way to fame and glory. This game is NOT for the faint of heart or for the young or for those who walk the thin line between war and peace, it is all out war if that is what you prefer and peace?, peace is dead, who's next?. You will find gone all the little kiddy elements from games past, jet packs, parachutes, planes in every drive way, tanks, all that crap. Yes you still have have the occasional chopper, thankfully Nikko was in "A" war thus he knows the art of war mongering, and at best they are bland missions, or your only hopes of survival compared to previous releases. I can't say enough about the game yet at the same time i cannot say to much in respect to those who have not played it yet. Take it from me, a 50 year old gamer since the days of Pong, this is the one to own, to play, if you like more true to life games with realism such as explosions, water, cars, motorcycles, boats, damage modeling and atmosphere then you do not want to miss this game. Its fantastic on the Xbox 360 and its alright on the PS3, but anyway you slice it and which ever system you own quit holding out and JUST DO IT!, buy the dang thing you'll be glad you did. Also if you can afford it and can find it and you like these kind of things go for the Limited edition set, art book with concept drawings, audio c.d. with music from the game, a lock box, all metal (tin) by the way, to store it in and a Rock Star key chain with two keys to lock it up, it comes with a duffle to haul around your stash around in, and if you lucky a full sized Liberty City license plate, pretty cool. Outa sight, outa mind. Enjoy.

  • Its cool ...
    By AF24M1HKIZ7QC on 2008-05-29
Well when it arrived , i thought there was something missing .. cuz everything was in a small box :)

when i saw the bag i thought it was so small !! but its not :) its medium sized ... cool ... carried my console with 2 controllers ! ;) and it smells good !

and the CAR PLATE was OK ... not really strong but OK .. cuz its not real .. its just looks cool :)

the key is good :) ROCKSTAR ... actually 2 keys

hmm the box that contains everything is cool i love looking at it

The Music CD is good . i loved the first track cuz its the theme ... other tracks are just RAP :) which is boring .. i dun really love rap

The ART BOOK is fun :) Illustrations and 3D (wireframe , Non-Textured and textured MODELS) and how niko was made .. and the other expectations of niko .. :)

and finally .. the game :) its fine .. not bad .. i really like what i got inside the Special Edition Package more than the game :)

No Car Tuning , no Body Building , No Hair cuts
Character customization only on the multiplayer mode
the multiplayer is a little bit boring :) but its ok

Well the game is fun ;) if ur friends play it .. and u invite them :)
the story is fine .. they're funny :) ... well its one of the best games ;)

  • Rockstar delivers again
    By A14IV6U3HGD3IA on 2008-05-29
if you like GTA3 you will like GTA4 plain and simple. the controls and style of play are similar throughout.

I wouldn't say that the game itself is particularly innovative, rather it is a next generation of GTA with better graphics, and better physics. I haven't gotten to do much with multiplayer but its been fun from what i've tried.

As far as the special edition goes...if you are a video game collector then it is worth it...if your just a player, prolly not.

  • Fun story, kind of repetitive gameplay after a while, but amusing multiplayer
    By A2X1AWT7D76XM on 2008-05-29
The graphics, cut scenes, and story are excellent. It kept me playing for hours just so that I could finish the story. The gameplay was very repetitive after a while, but wanted to continue the story more was making up for it.

Lucky, you have the Taxi cabs to take you place to place, otherwise traveling yourself would take 10 times as long.

I just started playing multiplayer, and it is fun, and different than other multiplayer games... that is, you don't get pissed off when you die. Whenever I get killed or blow-up, I laugh at myself because the graphics are hilarious. I don't get into competitive mode like other games, because you just want to try doing the most stupid things in these multiplayer maps.

  • Grand Theft Auto 4 -- Great graphics, excellent story!

This is the latest installment in the Grand Theft Auto franchise and it blows away all games of the genre. It has a great story that makes the game interesting as well as many detailed side missions that can be done at any point in the game. The graphics are incredible! I highly recommend this game for anyone over 18 that enjoys the free roaming do whatever you want type of game. Nonstop FUN!!!

I Review Games on my blog, so for a very in-depth review visit: http://captnawsomegames.blogspot.com/2008/05/gta-iv-does-it-live-up-to-hype-xbox-360.html

Here Is An Excerpt from My Blog:

"I thought it would be like any other mediocre, open world game, dry and limited, and a Russian version of Saints Row. I'm not saying Saints Row was terrible, but it was fair, but not a blockbuster hit, or a game worth keeping in my library, I wasn't very optimistic about GTA IV. I figured I'd pick up the Collector's Edition of GTA IV, frolic around for a while with my rocket launcher, and later pawn it off for a more meaningful game (keeping the safety deposit box and all that great swag). Boy was I wrong! Grand Theft Auto IV is everything and more that the press said it would be! It has knocked out all the annoying features of the previous game, making game play more seamless and easy to maneuver as well as minimal the distractions (we all know how hard it is to keep on track with the missions and not just run around on rampages and theft crazes) but GTA IV makes it much easier to not only follow the storyline, but actually relate to it."

  • One of the best GTA's
    By A2YLT84JQDDEYV on 2008-05-31
This is the best of the previous versions plus great graphics and an interesting plot. The only way this is not an improvement over the other GTAs is the radio stations are not as good as GTA3's. Ive been playing 3hrs a day for a month and I'm only a quarter of the way through the game, which gives you an idea how big GTA4 is. If you like GTA you need this game.
