Best Price: $129.99
When it comes to video games, the one that raised gaming up by several notches is the Playstation 2 or PS2 as its endearing fans call it. It remains a major player in the vidgame ring with new games being published for it each year. Its large repertory of games helps it enjoy continued popularity. The PlayStation-2 computer entertainment system is small, slim and network ready. And it has an enormous game library - over 1,400 games - to choose from! The redesigned PlayStation2 inherits the basic functions and design philosophy of earlier PS2 systems, but the internal design architecture has been completely overhauled to include the latest technologies. Renew your current PS2. If you're just getting into videogames, the PS2 is a great place to start. You'll love it! Play DVD videos and audio CD discs on your PS2 DualShock analog controller with pressure sensitivity on every action button (up to 255 levels) and the enhanced mobility of the analog thumbsticks

Excellent replacement after the old one fried By A2QL6PLDDMNWX on 2007-10-10
I bought one of the old PS2 systems when it came out and it worked very well. It was my DVD player as well as my video game console. When I went on vacation I accidentally left it on and it fried. After five good years of service, it finally died.
I had to buy a replacement and so I bought the slimmer version. It works just as well as the other one did and takes up a lot less space on my TV stand. It plays all my games and my DVDs, so I am very satisfied with this Sony product.
I refuse to buy a PlayStation 3 just because I refuse to spend a great wad of cash for a video game console. And with the new Black and White PS3 systems that are being released in November which do not feature PlayStation 2 compatibility, I don't see why I should buy a PS3 right now when it means I'd have to keep my PlayStation 2 just to play my PS2 games is pointless.
If you're looking for a good game system for a low price, buy the PlayStation 2, it's very good for games and DVDs, especially since WII doesn't play DVDs.
Excellent Console for the money .... By A3GASQRWPQW28W on 2007-09-12
Wow ... I was amazed at the size of this console. It's about the size of a trade paperback book, and actually weighs less (1.3 lbs)... in other words it's very small. I purchased the $4.99 upright base from Amazon and I can hardly see this black PS2 across my room.
The network adapter on the PS2 and network startup disk that is included, worked perfect and was very easy to follow. For me, I just purchased a 50' CAT-5 ethernet from Amazon ($11.50)and ran it along my baseboards from my DSL router to the PS2 and had things up and running in about 10 minutes.
I am very pleased with this console's quality and functionality, the selection of PS2 games, and the nice selection of on-line games available. I would highly recommend this console and gaming system for those on a budget and anyone for that matter! Enjoy!
Too bad these are junk..... By A2Z9622CLGF0RF on 2007-09-28
I am warning anyone considering purchasing this system - DON'T!!
I bought this when it first came out (2001 or so), and it lasted 8 months before it died. It stopped reading any of the games I tried out. The classic "Disc Read Error" message became commonplace in my house. Sony would do nothing for me, it was more expensive to get it fixed than to buy a new one. So.....like an idiot I bought a new one. My second PS2 only lasted 6 months and did the same thing. This time, it would not eject my NCAA Football game so I had to force open the disc tray just to get my game out. Once again, Sony would do nothing. The warranty was only for 90 days, thus the 6 month time frame did not allow warranty coverage. This was a very disappointing product, as I had never had problems with Sony products before. I enjoyed many of the games I played on the PS2, I just believe that it should last longer than 6-8 months. I bought an Xbox and never had any problems with it. Ever. Shame on Sony for putting a junky product, charging $200 for it (at the time), and then not backing it up with a decent warranty.
Overall = Poor
Pathetic quality of the Sony PS2 77001 By A352NNXMDVW34B on 2007-12-23
As I write this I am awaiting the 4th return of this product from Sony. I originally purchased this in January of 2007 from Amazon. Since that time each console has had maybe 12 hours total play time before the "disk read error" hits. The most recent return in Oct 07 did not even allow that as the console would not function right out of the box from Sony exchange center in TX. It has now also been returned to Sony for ANOTHER exchange. Just to be clear that is 4 exchanges in less than one year. This product has been defective from the get go. It has not had excessive wear or tear as the only one who plays it is my Grandson on his once a month visits. I strongly encourage a different console.
Quite Possibly the best console ever By A3QE4SABCWWTHH on 2007-09-11
Sales numbers bear this out. Sony systems survive for a very long time. As opposed to Microsoft products which... well we all know are obsolete within 2 years.
- A hint to the clueless
     By A1X2CC9Y4C2GFB on 2008-01-07
For all of you clueless adults out there: you must purchase a memory card or the kids can't save their games and have to start over from the very beginning, which can be tedious. My daughter played continuously for hours on end, sleepy-eyed even in the day or so following Christmas (before we purchased a memory card), simply because when she turned the game off, it would be lost forever. Save your children. Buy a memory card.
- Best combination of Price and features for a gaming console !!
     By A1LSR9O8NA5QFD on 2007-11-03
There i was thinking about getting a gaming console worth having, without spending a lot of money... i read a lot of reviews, i tryed in my friends house during a whole afternoon.Overall i just loved this gaming console !! While my friends where losing the real fun objective of gaming with the purchase of expensive and sometimes overrated gaming console, i played my games like no other player !! and remember this PS2 console is a TRUE gaming console, is not a gaming PC with a different presentation (dont be fooled) ! I would recommend this product to anyone at any age, who really enjoys gaming in its true essentials !! GO BLACK AND SLIM !! u just can't go wrong !
- New Version of PS2 well worth it
     By A24W1WM0EICBHN on 2008-02-13
After ten solid years, my original PlayStation 2 finally stopped reading discs -- the optical drive failed. I was a little wary about replacing my trusty machine with the newest super-thin PlayStation 2 because it looked like I could break it if I held it too tight. My fears have been totally obliterated. This version of the PS2 not only has all of the features of the the previous versions but comes in a much more stylish package that is strong and durable -- the ultra-thin case makes for easier integration into a home theatre's entertainment centre, the IR (infra-red) port on the front makes use of a remote control (for DVD functions) a brain-free exercise, and the top-load disc drive is much more friendly than the tray-load drive that had a tendency to stick or fail entirely. I wouldn't recommend throwing out a working PS2 in favor of getting this version, but if you are in need of a new PS2 for any reason, then this is the version you want to get.
- After the Atari.
     By A1LMX2N66EYKB4 on 2008-02-24
I haven't played video games since the early eighties on, what at the time, was the game console to have. The Atari. Thought it was time to get with the times. I am so amazed at how far games have come and this is a great/affordable system. The temptation was to get the PS3. However it's a bit expensive and for someone getting back into video games I didn't see the need for all the bells and whistles right now. Plus the games a lot more expensive than PS2.
The unit is small and streamline and plays DVD's very well.
I would recommend this system to any 'oldie' like myself who wants to step into the 21st century of gaming.
- Best Gaming Value Out There!
     By A28F6DE63BC4RY on 2007-11-26
The problem with buying one of the newer (ps3, 360, or Wii) and pricier consoles is that they don't have much of a game library yet. And even the few gems that are available have some kinks to be worked out (heard of the fatal bug for Zelda that doesn't allow you to leave a particular dungeon once you have saved your game there? This can easily be solved by starting the game over?!). Not only does the ps2 have a realistic price tag, it also has a full game library that has had several years to grow. With the abundance of used ps2 games available, you can often get two or three ps2 titles for the price of one of the titles for the newer consoles. If you don't have to have the latest thing on the market, the ps2 just makes sense.
- Most games for this system have linear play and fixed camera angles...
     By A33QMDLXOUN7L on 2008-01-05
I've played Xbox since it came out and 99% of 3rd person games on the Xbox have a roving camera, i.e., you can make a 360 degree sweep all around your characters.
I had always seen PS2 games that I thought would be great but they never released on Xbox, so, now with the prices of those games being low along with the lower price of the system, I thought I'd give PS2 a try.
So far, most of the games I've played on it have a fixed camera angle, which makes for an antiquated game play, akin to something you would have seen on and SNES. Even a lot of games on the Nintendo 64 had 360 degree cameras.
God of War which is supposedly the best game on the PS2 has this problem. I'm not saying that all games are like this; shadow of colossus has a rotating camera, but sometimes limited, I'm just saying that this didn't seem to be a priority for game designers of PS2 games. That's the way it looks when 1 out of 10 games is that way. I don't know if this is just the fault of the designers, or that the system is just easier for them to design these types of games. I played dozen of games on the Xbox before coming across a linear single path type game which was Lord of the Rings the Two Towers.
Maybe I was spoiled to a superior system, maybe I got lucky with the games selected for that system.
The PS2 seems to be taking several steps backwards. Hopefully the PS3 will offer more when I get one, but that won't be till the prices drop considerably... hmmm, what systems should I get next?
Ok, now that I've bashed it a little, let me say that it's ok, just now what I was expecting. You may not be bothered by this aspect of game play.
I don't really like having to pry the disc out of the tray, but that's not such a big deal. I was worried before getting it that it wouldn't have sufficient memory for saving games, being accustomed to the hard drive on the Xbox, but with 2 memory card it looks like I'll be able to save as much as I want provided I save economically and delete unused stuff.
It is small, so small that you want to be careful where you sit it, since you could accidentally yank it off a shelf with your controller.
I haven't had it a real long time, but it seems to crank right up with no disc read errors, I hope it continues to work well.
For the price, and the price of the games you can get for it, it's a decent enough system and a good value.
- Excellent Product!
     By A23KDYA7YGPEWW on 2008-02-21
Granted, I gave the original, larger PS2 a bad review a couple of years ago and swore I would not buy one again. However, I took a chance and got the slimer version and I couldn't be happier. The compact size, cheap games and ease of use make this console a winner. Plus, according to a recent article I read, the PS2 is still very popular, so this baby isn't dying anytime soon. In fact, if by some chance my current one dies, I will definitely buy another one, maybe one of the silver models.
I do have an XBOX 360 and an original XBOX, and hope to get a PS3 way down the line. However, this PS2 will definitely keep me busy for a while, as I have a ton of games I have yet to play. I also want to get a wireless controller and an LCD screen for travel.
- Great value for the money
     By A138KIMF54JZJY on 2008-04-05
If you are not a hard core gamer it makes sense not to spend $400 on a system you'll use once or twice a week. PS2 is great value, for the price point you can get almost all the games on PS3 - Guitar Hero III, Rock Band, Dance Revolution, sports, etc. Sony will keep supporting PS2 until 2010 I believe. Plus it is a small console, fits beautifully anywhere. The upside to getting the PS3 is the system is also a Blu-Ray player - if you are looking for both a gaming console and the player then PS3 is a good system at a good price.
- Well worth the wait
     By A10OQXPWRU45D2 on 2008-05-25
I waited ten (10) years to upgrade from my PS-one to a PS2. I thought about the PS3, but could not justify the added expense. The PS2 has great graphics and reaction. I bought this just to play God of War (which is awesome). This system is a great deal for only $125. Throw in a $25 Sony memory card and you are in business. The games are cheap and there a ton of them available. It also has playback capability, which the PS3 does not, unless you were able to get one of the 60GB models which are now no longer available. This would still be great for kids who are cool enough to be able to live without the latest and most expensive model. Maybe in 10 years I'll look to upgrade to the PS3.
- Excellent

     By A1JNKM68A47YXO on 2008-01-07
the game was at a good price, but the game needed memory so i had to go out after xmas and buy a memory chip so the games could be saved/played. i wish some one would have told me or offered this chip with the game so the gift would have been nicer to recieve on xmas.
- Awesome!
     By A233H7F8EJIX1F on 2008-02-16
I recently bought PS 2 and It's awesome! It doesn't only work as a video game console. But, as a DVD player, too. It's super slim and not heavy at all. The price is really acceptable. I'm really satisfied with this purchase.
- Great Product

I'm glad to recomend this product to buy it, the PS2 slim console is a great product, not only works as a game console but as a dvd player too. Excellent product and great satisfaction.
- Excellent gaming system....
     By A1GDBTJIQE6OAI on 2008-06-07
For $129 this is a steal (just like GameCube at $79). PS 2 is a fantastic gaming system with no flaws. The thin version is compact, looks sharp and can play for hours at a time w/o freezing (important). Plus the PS2 games are readily available anywhere - Madden, EA sports, Motal Kombat, Call of Duty etc....
PS 2 is family fun.
- Ps2
     By A2QS8ZFG7BDP40 on 2008-06-10
A good game the ps3 is definitely an improvement but to expensive right now and there is no good games out there yet for the ps3 console so you might as well go for the ps2 and the games
- A terrible piece of hardware.
     By A656XEEKRN8DL on 2008-06-24
This is the second Playstation 2 I have owned, and the second one that has failed to read any disc within three years. I have followed lens adjusting guides, bought a new lens and installed it, and the system now fails to even spin the disc. I literally do not know a single person whose original PS2 is still in working order, whether they bought the first console or this slimline model.
Had only either of the TWO of these consoles I purchased survived to continue playing its extensive library of games, which now simply take up room on my bookcase, it would've been an easy five star review.
Game consoles should not simply decide to stop working. Sony has lost a customer for good.
- PS2 Console

I am very pleased with this product. I was incredibly suprised at how small and lightweight this system is, but it makes it very easy to bring in along for traveling. It's very simple and easy to hook up and play. I got what I paid for and I love it when that happens. I give the PS2 game console in black that I bought on Amazon two thumbs up! :0)
- Excelent price for the PS2 !!!

- PS2 an economicl alternative
     By A25S3Y045C0XP6 on 2007-12-28
For 129.00 (about the price of a Nintendo DS) you get an economical, product that doesnt take up much space and has lots of game choices, along with a proven system.
- Fun!

The Playstation was reasonably priced and shipped very quickly. It's provided us with a lot of fun. Great value.
- (o_O) ||| << This skinny thing is a PS2 ??
     By A38IEZF0P3ZUQJ on 2007-12-29
The first thing you'll notice and shock over is the size. I thought this is the PS2 ? Remembering the big bulky 1st gen PS2 and comparing it to the tiny address book sized thing. My Bible is bigger than the PS2. It's so small I'm sure a woman can fit this into her Clutch bag purse. I was kinda sad they dont give you a stand included but those things can easily be purchased. As for the previous reviewer who wrote about wireless controllers I went over to a walmart and found a Pelican wireless controller for $10 bucks. I bought it as a Christmas gift to myself. My boyfriend bought me the PS2 for Christmas. Call me Old Skool but I find no interest in the XBox360, PS3, or the Wii. Well, maybe the Wii if the prices went down to a range I can afford. But all I gotta say is I LOVE MY PS2 !! I recommend it and along with it buy EyeToy : Play 2, EyeToy Kinetic, and Taiko : Drum Master
