  • Excellent for the Kindle; Good for other things, too

    By AA98GW5LPFBNC on 2008-01-02
I've seen LED booklights before, but avoided them because they weren't that bright or took odd, expensive batteries. The Mighty Bright is mighty good. It takes simple AAA batteries (2) and has a sturdy clip. The battery pack sits on the back of the clip so it doesn't "bulge" inside the cover of the book. The "neck" of the light is slim and flexible. It stays in place no matter what position you put it in.

In spite of what some have said, the light is very bright and usable even on the low setting. This light is also good for jobs around the house where you need a light in a dark place while you use your hands for tools. It costs a bit more than other booklights I've seen, but like the Kindle, it's worth it.

Edit: I have posted a couple of pictures of the light attached to the Kindle in the Kindle main page photo gallery.

  • Nice product, with some drawbacks for Kindle use.

    By AP600TYFKLDRX on 2007-12-02
The light has two intensities, which helps in many different settings. However, you need to work to position the light in just the right manner in order to avoid reflection off of the Kindle screen. It can be done, but you need to play with it a little.

I suppose you could clip it to the Kindle itself, but I only clip it to the case.

Also, the blue tinge to the light takes a little getting used to, but it isn't as harsh as bright white light.

Overall, I recommend it. Based on the price and usefulness, I give it a 4 of 5.

  • The perfect accessory for Amazon Kindle owners

    By AHB0L35LOICAN on 2008-05-01
One of the downsides, such as it is, about the Kindle: Amazon's New Wireless Reading Device and any other device using the revolutionary eInk display is that, just like a paper page, you need external light to read it. By far I think that a non-lighted display is a great thing as it seems far less tiring to my eyes, but it also means that one must have decent lighting in order to read the screen comfortably. This is even more important since, for some, the contrast of black text on a gray background is hard to get used to.

That's where having an accessory like the Mighty Bright XtraFlex2 Light becomes really important. The light is by far the best reading light I personally have seen, with it's long flexible neck which makes finding just the right position a breeze. The wide mouth clip is strong but not overly tight, making it easy enough for me with my limited strength and manual dexterity able to open it, but also leaving more than strong enough to attach firmly to any surface. In my case, I place my Kindle in the Kindle Reader Stand, so I attach the Mighty Bright to the back of the stand.

I love that the lights are LED. A previous reading light I've owned had a small traditional light, and it got hot very quickly. Being disabled and therefore normally using the light on a bed, trying to stand it next to my book (as it had no clip on mechanism) always left me worried about it falling over and burning me, or my inadvertently touching the exposed bulb. Not a problem with the Mighty Bright LEDs, which always stay cool to the touch. Also the ability to use either one or both of the twin LEDs is very useful, as one can (presumably) cut down on battery drainage when the brighter setting is unnecessary.

As for glare on the Kindle screen, a problem other reviewers have mentioned, it is a minor annoyance, but I found the simplest solution is to position the light so that it extends around or just below the Kindle's upper corners to rest off to the side of the screen, with the light itself angled more directly toward the Kindle itself, or perhaps aimed toward a point just to the side of the screen. That seems to keep enough light on the screen to read while keeping the reflection of the bulb off the screen itself. But I am lying down on my bed with the Kindle in its stand beside me more on eye level. Your experiences may vary as you will likely be viewing from a different position.

I can't speak to battery life as of yet as this is an early, first impressions review, after having owned and used the light for a few hours as I write this. But the Mighty Bright looks and feels solid and well made, and with that and its usefulness to me in helping me to further enjoy my Kindle experience, I'd say it's well worth the somewhat high price of $17.99.

Even if this isn't a product you will use every day, for anyone who wants to have the full range of "must have" accessories, you should put the Mighty Bright at the top of your list.

  • Not particularly designed for the Kindle

    By A2XBNHMF9GFIMF on 2008-02-08
This light works fine and is very bright. But, I don't really understand how it is supposedly designed for the Kindle. It is simply a clip on light, there are plenty of others out there. The problem is that the only way to clip it on is to cover up part of the page forward buttons. It is not really a big deal but is a little awkward.

Maybe this is nitpicking but I guess my point is to not get your expectations up that this light is somehow unique in it design for the Kindle. And, along those lines, it is not really worth paying any premium over other clip on lights out there.

  • Great For Night Time
    By AWPODHOB4GFWL on 2007-12-11
When I'm on my computer at night, I can't see my keyboard on the pull-out tray without turning on all the lights. I just clamp this light on my desk and can easily see the keyboards. Its not too bright and since its LED lights, I would imagine the batteries will last a long time. Good little invention for $20!

  • Really great, highly recommended
    By A3V6Z4RCDGRC44 on 2008-06-12
I read a fair amount in situations where I do not want a "room light" to be on. This might be because I am laying in bed while my partner is sound asleep, or sometimes it's just nice to curl up in a room without all the lights blaring (and wasting electricity). It's nice to have a candle or two burning, curled up snugly, with just the booklight to light my reading. My eyesight is very important to me, so I want to make sure in these situations that I have as little eyestrain as possible.

That's where the Mighty Bright LED Book Light comes in. It has a pair of LED lights and you can set it to have one or both of them on. The light is VERY bright and is perfect for nighttime reading. The clip part of it is nice and strong, but there's padding on the inside of both halves of the clip so it's gentle on whatever you clip it to.

I'm very impressed with the neck area. It is thin, very flexible, and holds its position at exactly the twist and angle you put it at. You can pretty much angle it any way you imagine. This means you can line it up perfectly to be out of your field of vision. For the Kindle, you can aim it so there's no glare at all from the screen.

I was a little nervous at first about clipping it onto the Kindle itself, but I found if you clip it the top over where the "scroll bar" is that it pressed evenly on the plastic case without getting in the way of any of the buttons.

The LED lights themselves are pretty much infinitely good, and it takes THREE AAA batteries (not two as some other reviews state). They last about 40 hours, which is quite a fair amount for a battery powered flashlight.

I've tried a bunch of lights in the past, and this is really an impressive improvement over previous versions. Because they're LEDs, they don't get hot! Always an important thing for something you're holding near your face and hands.

    Highly recommended!

  • Best book light ever...
    By A38KVB95JZ309S on 2007-12-13
I've had one for over a week now. I'm reading about twice my normal amount given the sudden ability to read at night without disrupting the spouse. Now she's staying up reading too and stealing the light from me. I have another one on order for her post haste. Best $20 I've spent in quite some time. It is simple and elegant - exactly what technology should be.

  • Best Book Light Ever!
    By A33REC3J2JU2EL on 2007-12-24
My husband is almost blind and has to read with the book about 4 inches from his face. Other book lights either got in the way or had to be constantly repositioned for him to be able to see the page.

This light is very lightweight, super-flexible and lights up both pages of a paperback book & stays out of his face. It is the only booklight he has ever liked and we've tried at least 6 others.

He is thrilled with it. The two intensities aren't really necessary for regular books, but it's still nice to have.

I'm planning to buy the AC adaptor so that he can use it without wearing out the batteries, but they do last quite a while anyway.

I have an off-brand that I bought somewhere that is similar, but not nearly as nice.

Can't recommend this booklight highly enough!

    Update 12/26/07:
Still loving this light. I found their website and they are available there in different colors at a comparable price. If you spend 32 dollars the shipping is free and they have all the accessories as well as their craft and musician lights. Excellent!

  • The Best Little Book Light!!
    By A6T1RHMQ9NSE4 on 2008-01-17
I bought this book light so that I wouldn't have to turn on the light at the side of my bed at night or if I'm sitting in the lounge chair and I don't want all the bright lights on while just reading. Also, I didn't really want to disturb anyone else in the house just because I was reading.

Well, let me tell you that I was AMAZED at how bright this little light is and you can actually turn it down a notch. There are two settings and even on the highest amount of light, you will not wake up anyone that is asleep or watching television next to you.

Plus, the light has a beautiful light blue tinge to it and it makes reading very easy on the eyes. It's hard not to love.

Now there are two options when it comes to powering the light. You can buy the adapter and plug it into the wall or you can use three AAA batteries. Which have seemed to last forever by the way. But neither options are included. You have to buy one or the other. (Or both...depending on what your needs are)

This light has a clip so you can either clip it to your book or you can have it free standing. It works perfect with the KINDLE, which is what I bought it for, but it also works wonderful for a plain old regular book that you might be reading as well.

This cute, little, bendable light comes in assorted colors so if you'd like something other than black please know that that is another option. I believe you could even find one in your favorite color. They have Blue, Pruple, Black, Pink, Silver, Lime, Aqua blue, yellow and a few other colors that I know I'm leaving out...like red. : ) So for the fashionistas like me, practical and fashionable all in one swoop!

Quite honestly I haven't found a better book light and the price is outstanding. So it's basically a win-win situation no matter which way you look at it. Hope that helps if your contemplating the purchase. I think it's well worth every penny!

  • Excellent portable light
    By A11IDK9L74LPT1 on 2007-12-19
I ordered this light since it was suggested on the kindle page and I was already in the market for a battery powered book light.

The best things about this light:
    - EXCELLENT and even light coverage. This is the best I've used. I've never used a book light or desk lamp, regular or halogen or LED, that has such a nice, smooth light. Usually the lamps cast brighter halo in the middle and the rest of the diameter is much darker. This light does not have that annoying bright center shining on the page/kindle. It has an even level of illumination in a great diameter that covers both pages of my hardcover, paperback or kindle. This alone makes this the best book light I've ever used.

    - It is *tiny* and extremely portable. It's really easy to adjust where the light points and keep the light source out of your eyes. I had no problem adjusting the lamp so that there was no reflection on my kindle screen. I read sitting up or lying down with the light at different angles and all positions worked fine.

    - Small batteries for power and you can use re-chargeable. I need a portable book light and this definitely fits the bill.

    The biggest negatives for me:
    - The clip is too short and is a bit bulky because the 3 AA batteries fit in it. For the kindle - you need to have the kindle cover to use this light. For regular books (and the kindle cover), the bulky clip is awkward to attach. It would help a lot if it was actually longer so you could get a better grip on it. Obviously still worth buying and using the light, but for me this is a enough of a negative that it cost one star in my rating.

    - Color of the light: As reviewers mentioned, the light is kind of white-blue in color. It is not the warm color of other light bulbs. I found that this worked very well for reading my kindle. I actually prefer it over my regular lights. But, I don't like it much for regular white-colored paper books. My husband liked it for either kindle or regular paper. So, the light color may or may not be an issue for some. I also would prefer if the light could get one stop brighter. It is nice with the 2 levels, but I feel like I need it a bit brighter sometimes. One good thing is that you can do some adjustment on the brightness by moving the light source closer to the book.

Overall, this is an excellent light. We liked it so much that we ordered another for my husband and will take both with us when traveling this Xmas.

  • best book light
    By A1FPGH58GI1TX9 on 2007-12-07
I ordered this in anticipation of my Kindle (still waiting patiently...) and have found it to be such a great book light I just ordered another for my husband. Lightweight, great light cone with 2 levels of intensity, and no bulb to burn out. Good product

  • Best Light Yet
    By A2PDNQMZ1O0M6M on 2007-12-11
I've used many book lights over the years and have never been happy with any of them (at least till now). Generally my complaints have been:

    1. They illuminate only part of the book forcing me to twist the book or the light.
    2. Too heavy.
    3. Use batteries too fast or require an adapter.

So I can't say I was happy about getting another one to use with my new Kindle. This time, however, I am impressed, both for use with my Kindle and with regular books. This light goes far in addressing most of my complaints...

    1. Because of the long neck the light source is far enough away from the book (or Kindle) that it can illuminate both pages at one time. With the Kindle, which doesn't have two pages, the distance allows for "fine tuning" of the amount of light above and beyond the ability to select one or two bulbs.

    2. Weight - this isn't perfect. I'd prefer something a bit lighter, but I haven't found it to be a major problem. I guess my problem isn't with the light itself, but with battery technology.

    3. Using the LED lights seems to conserve battery life rather well. I've been using mine every night for two weeks without any noticeable drop in illumination. With others I've used I'd have had to swap batteries already, or have been forced to plug it in. I can live with the weight if the battery life is excellent.

My only real complaint is that sometimes when I shift around for a more comfortable reading position the lamp will shift positions as well as the flexible stem holding it up seems a bit on the loose side. I'd prefer it to be just slightly stiffer. This is really a minor complaint however, unless it loosens further with use.

    Aloha! Bob

  • Great book light!
    By A2BIJMB2BITQUM on 2008-03-08
This is a superb little book light - a great deal of flexibility (no pun intended) and a well-thought out clip design makes this the finest book light I have seen.

The long, flexible head allows perfect adjustability. Three AAA battery power makes for simple battery changes. Two brightness levels for whatever you need. Not only that - but it folds up into a neat little package when traveling.

I bought this for my Kindle, but would be pleased to use it for any book.

  • You won't keep your significant other up with this!
    By A1MISHZ6WC8EYP on 2007-12-15
First off, I have to say that I've never owned a booklight, so I'm no expert. I have only used this booklight once so far, last night for about an hour. I love it already though. The whole room except for my book remained dark. I don't agree with someone else who said that the light is too bright; I had the light on the lowest setting and found it perfect. The light is a whitish-blue tint. It spreads across the pages nicely and as it advertises, has no spots that are left in the dark. The neck is flexible and stays in place in my experience. It is long, so if the light doesn't cover your whole page, you can extend it to fit. I put the booklight on my desk (I didn't attach it to anything) and it stayed put and wasn't wobbly, so it would be great for crafts. According to the package, the batteries (3 AAA) will last 40 hours. It was well worth the money and I can't wait until I get my Kindle to use it on that.

  • Very Nice Book Light, Not Quite Right for the Kindle
    By A2Y739CRM15WDL on 2008-01-08
As a reading light, I'm very impressed with this item. I've been seeking the perfect reading light since the Itsy Bitsy Book Light days. Either the battery life was too short, the neck wouldn't flex right or the light was too dim. The light in this case is very good. The neck can be flexed in all sorts of directions. The ability to turn off one LED provides a good option for different low light situations.

My only gripe is that it is hard to attach to the Kindle itself. I've been using the cover just to protect the device when it's laying around the office, but now if I want to use the light I have to attach the light to the case and twist the neck a bit. I've trying attaching it to a couple of places on the Kindle but it just doesn't satify me.

This will do until someone comes up with the perfect Kindle reading light.

  • Well made and effective
    By A2JU94MT7NQXH2 on 2008-01-24
Like others, I purchased this as it was the "recommended for Kindle" light. I'm happy to say that it's really enhanced my reading experience. I smoke outside and my balcony has poor lighting, so I keep this clipped above the sliding doors and use it when I take my Kindle outside with me. I read with the cover folded back, and this clips on with no problems, with the skinny part of the clip between the back of the Kindle and the cover.

The light is blue-tinged, as are most led-based "white" lights, but the color actually increases the contrast on the Kindle screen nicely (which is good, because the glowing white casing would otherwise drown it). It's very, very bright with both LEDs on, and still very bright in one-LED mode. The construction is fine, and the gooseneck is both very flexible and very stable once a position is found.

I've had very little problem with reflection off the Kindle. After a couple of times, I've found it quite easy to find a position that doesn't reflect off the screen or scroll bar. As hinted at above, the Kindle casing itself is another matter, but that's going to be a problem with any bright light.

My only wishes would be that it were a little smaller so it was more portable, and that the choice between one and two LEDs was on a secondary toggle switch instead of using a three-way on/off switch. I never want two LEDs on (it's just way too bright) so always have to double-click the on switch to turn it on.

Those are minor, though, and this book light works very well for me.

  • Works great with kindle
    By A2G4LKK57XMBL3 on 2008-02-21
I actually picked up one at a local book store, and immediately began using it with my kindle. After three weeks of nightly use, it has yet to need a battery change (3 AAA). I tend to use it with only one led lit, the option is for one or two.

I also do NOT shine it directly on the kindle. Rather I clip it to the case and bend the neck slightly askew. The indirect light is perfect and the clip and neck stay in place without needing to be adjusted.

    great little light.

  • Works Perfectly (almost)
    By A2M6Q0M563E6V6 on 2008-03-12
If you want a night light for your Kindle, this is the one. Has two settings, and works just fine. Why 4 instead of 5? Because it doesn't work directly on the Kindle and unless you've added Velcro to the back of the Kindle to hold it in it's holder it doesn't work very well there either. But with the little extra space the Velcro adds, it works just fine.

  • It is Mighty Bright Alright
    By A2I3H6IBBAW0WJ on 2007-12-12
I bought this so I could do some night reading with the Amazon Kindle. I was shocked when I saw how bright this little thing is. There are basically 3 settings. "Off", "both light bulbs on", and "1 light bulb on".
On the highest setting it was way too bright for me. The lowest setting was not much difference. Thank goodness for the long flexible neck. I fully extend it and point the lights down and away from the screen.

I just wish the light was a softer color...maybe a yellowish tint or something, instead of the bright white. And when I say bright I mean BRIGHT!!

You will defiantly get your money's worth.

  • Flex Light
    By A3AXE7N19VXK94 on 2007-12-23
Needs to be brighter for viewing Kindle at night. Also, clip is awkward to use. Needs a rubber like surface to create more friction and keep it from tilting while holding Kindle at a angle. It would be very desireable to make a rechargeable model.

  • BREAKS EASILY
    By A17BGTLBE9YFOL on 2008-01-12
The first thing tnat happened is when putting in the batteries, the cover broke. I now have a rubber band holding the cover on.

  • Good, but not perfect
    By A3UKWQS8SRW6IO on 2008-02-21
This light works well. The 3 batteries make it a little heavier than I would prefer, so you really need to attach it to the Kindle cover, rather than to only the Kindle itself. You can have one or two lights go on to give you the right amount of light, which I like. The reason I am giving it only 4 stars is that here is no way to lock it in the "off" position. I bought this and my Kindle for traveling. When I tried using the light, I found that the new batteries were dead. It must have turned on when jostled in my suitcase. I now remove one of the batteries when packing it so this doesn't happen again.

  • Prefect, almost.
    By A34I7GR82KGY2W on 2008-02-26
Great light, great pliable neck which is long enough to use in any conceivable configuration. But, the clip does not marry well to the kindle device or it's book cover. This could be improved.

  • Mighty Indeed!
    By AONUCJBC85BL on 2008-06-25
Initially I had bought a inexpensive LED book light for my KIndle from B&N, that was was nice simple, compact - all it needed to be right? But I dropped it once, about 3 feet to the hardwood and it stopped working. So much for that one. I had read raves for the Mighty Bright but its 3x what I paid for the B&N light. I gave it a shot anyway and i am very pleased - its very sturdy and well built. Its smaller than you think - pretty compact.

The flexible neck is extremely well done, it bends to just about any position and stays there nicely. This is a well built light meant to last years. You power it with 3 AAA batteries but it also has a power port if you buy the adapter. I bought a very small kodak value battery charger and some NIMH AAA's so I won't have to keep AAA's on hand.

The twins LEDs cast a TON of light and you can toggle it to one LED or 2. Also, the lens covering the LEDs really does spread the light very evenly so you don't have any hot spots. Glare isn't really an issue, just move the light around to avoid any glare, its not a problem for me. I like that it casts a pretty broad area of light and not just a small spotlight.

The Clip is also worth mentioning. First its a deep & wide clip, meaning you can really let it get ahold of what you have clipped it to. Also, the clip is padded so it stays more firmly in place and won't scratch what its clipped to. All the other book lights had these really tiny clips that were hard to manage or barely stayed in place.

All in all - wow - I guess not all book lights are created equal. If you do a lot of reading and want a reliable, no hassle light, this is the one to get.

  • Works well
    By A291DFQ7YZGOML on 2007-12-16
I've used other book lights but this is the best one. It's light weight, and I especially like the two brightness options. It uses 3 AAA batteries, maybe someday they can offer this with less battery requirements...

  • Perfect little light
    By AYB8NTZQ19J7H on 2007-12-26
The Mighty Bright XtraFlex2 Light is perfect for reading - and works great with the Kindle. It is cool to the touch, no matter how long it is left on - so great for reading in bed. Really like the one or two brightness option. Xtra Flex 2 LED Book Light, Blue

  • Best ever book light
    By A207AYFGSMB4ZE on 2008-02-18
I purchased this with some skepticism, thinking of the old adage, "once burned, twice shy". In fact it could be "many times burned, immensely shy" or som such in my case.

I have purchased at least 20 book lights in my many years of reading, and have found them all wanting, most of them seveely so.

Hence my surprise and pleasure at finding that this one lives up to and even exceeds its promise.

It is light in weight--with very good weight distribution when clipped to a book.

It distributes the light perfectly--right where directed--and is easily adjusted to wherever the reading surface may be.

The light doewn't spill over--a very critical point in keeping me out of trouble with my wife, who no longer has to implore me to turn off the light becuuse it is interfering with her sleep. Finally!

The batteries last much longer--again as promised, because the LED's draw so little, and also because the available lower setting uses less power but still provides adequate light for reading.

I just re-read the above and it sounds like I'm a shill--however I paid full price for this light, bought it by chance, don't know a soul connected with it, and consider it the best night reading light in all my scores of years of reading--by light years!

  • Highly Recommended for Kindle, and books too.
    By A3LOOGDJ7S01LA on 2008-03-31
I bought the Mighty Bright Flex 2 for use with my Kindle. It is extremely light, almost weightless. The light comes with two bulbs so you can adjust brightness by turning on just one, or both, which is really a nice feature, and it lights up the Kindle page beautifully and evenly, without bothering those around me who might be trying to sleep or watch TV etc.

I use rechargeable AAA batteries (X3), so when they get low I just swap them out with the 3 extra batteries I keep in the charger. No worries! The neck of the lamp is very flexible, easily adjusted, yet holds it's position well once placed. It also makes a handy flashlight as I trudge to bed with my Kindle after a busy day (thus avoiding waking up my better half).

The shade on the Mighty Bright is quite minimal so it is hard to adjust it in such a way that I can't see any part of the bulb head on, but with a bit of work it's possible (thought barely). But that would be the only downside I could think of. Other than that it works beautifully. Best book light I have tried so far.

  • Excellent Clip On Light For many Purposes
    By AC2EGRJTJYVBA on 2008-05-18
Although I don't normally have problems reading my Kindle display under normal illumination, I purchased this light for times when I am reading in dimmer light (when my poor wife is trying to sleep). I now plan on using it anytime I'm doing work that needs concentrated light and I have a place to clip it!!

The light works great with the Kindle. You need to adjust it so that the light shines somewhat obliquely to the surface, otherwise you will get a "hotspot" reflection off the surface. However, the light from the device is diffuse, so it's not difficult to get the light adjusted properly.

This device has two LED lights. You can choose to activate one or both. For most Kindle purposes, I think I'll only use one LED. The device is well built and I do not anticipate problems from the sturdy switching mechanism or the rather delicate looking goose neck. There is a slight blue tinge to the light it produces, but the hue is not an impediment or an annoyance. I looked at several lights, but I chose this one for two reasons. First, it had aforementioned two light settings. Second, it uses AAA batteries and not watch batteries which tend to be more expensive. It IS a trade off. The watch battery powered lights will have a smaller footprint than this light with slightly less weight. However, the size and weight of the clip do not bother me on this model. The neck is very flexible, so will be easy to store for travel. Overall, I can highly recommend this light. It's slightly more expensive, but you get what you pay for.
