So just who the hell does this Nugent guy think he is, anyway?

Apparently, he is far beyond the thinking stage as he throttles mercilessly into his 5th decade of ferocious hi-energy Motor City Madhouse rhythm and blues-rock-n-roll mayhem. Look at the titles of these songs. The lyrics. Check out the title of this record. Listen to the sheer audacity and authority of this firestorm of rock. Doesn't this guy ever quit? Is he incapable of backing down? Can one man smile, laugh & dance this much in a single lifetime? Is it legal to have this much fun, defiance, energy and soul? Ted Nugent's legendary guitar identity is truly unique and special. If ever there was an unadulturated classic full bluntal, natural Gibson guitar tone, Nugent has created and perfected it. From the Amboy Dukes of the 1960s, through classic American anthems with his Ted Nugent band, the 1990s Damn Yankees right to this very day, the Nuge defines flat out American G-force horsepower rock with pure, unbridled enthusiasm, heart & soul. Here on LOVE GRENADE, once again surrounded by worldclass virtuoso musicians Barry Sparks and Tommy Clufetos, this is a band to reckon with.

Nugent's first studio album in 5 years, "Love Grenade" is a sonic assault on the body, mind and soul. Featuring the soon to be classic "Love Grenade", "Stand" and a 40th anniversary re-recording of the Amboy Dukes classic "Journey To The Center Of The Mind" this is Ted Nugent at his unadulterated finest.

Love Grenade demonstrates one incontrovertible truth about Ted Nugent--when he's on, he's hard to beat. Take a listen to Double Live Gonzo, Weekend Warriors, or the ubiquitous Cat Scratch Fever, and you'll hear a rarified player at the top of his game. The moments of true brilliance are harder to come by on this outing--it's hard not to glance at titles such as "Funk U" and "Girl Scout Cookies" and cringe with visions of late-era Spinal Tap. Worse still, it's harder to wade through the sophomoric lyrics and ham-fisted double entendres. Truth is, Nugent's at his best when he's not singing about sex--"Geronimo and Me," "Aborigine," and "Stand" are about the guns, guts, and glory behind Nuge's America. Truth is, Nugent's best when he's not singing at all, but instead flying his freak flag on the six string. A little less fat--the title cut, "Bridge Over Troubled Daughters" and the wholly unnecessary remake of "Journey to the Center of the Mind"--might have shown us that Nugent may just have another great album in him. Instead, we get a pretty good one that's not quite on par with one of Michigan's greatest export's best works. --Jedd Beaudoin MPN: 20119 - UPC: 826992011929

  • Another Bullseye For Uncle Ted

    By A3EZ2PLA8AFPIF on 2007-09-06
Ted Nugent just keeps on keepin on!! "Love Grenade" continues on the hard and heavy path created by Ted's last album "Craveman". Where "Craveman" leaned toward a "heavy, heavy" metal sound, "Love Grenade" presents with a harder rocking (and more rolling) edge. Ted's guitar, especially the solos, have the best tone I have heard had in years. Ted's guitar is much cleaner, crunchier and upfront than on Ted's last album. It may be Ted's best guitar sounding album since "Scream Dream". You also gotta love the attitude Ted can inject into everyone of his albums. Not many artists can keep the metal fires burning with the intensity and duration of Uncle Ted. Finally the lyrics are 100% pure Ted; how may songwriters can come up with songs like "Bridge Over Troubled Daughters" & "Girl Scout Cookies"? (It's rhetorical question).
In fairness, I would actually give this 4 1/2 stars. The only reason I would subtract 1/2 a star is on a few tracks Ted tries to play way too fast. Dare I say beyond his capability. Consequently he misses a few notes and bends and sounds a bit out of tune. Yeah, this is a minor gripe bordering on blasphemy, but it is the first time my ears have heard it. If you get the album, please write a comment below on whether you agree or disagree.
Anyway, whether your are a lifelong fan or a newcomer, you can not go wrong here. ****Just remember this is not iPod/earbud music! Whether in your car or the privacy of your own home, "Love Grenade" deserves to be played at high volume on real speakers!!!****

  • Motor City Madman is back!!

    By A12KJ9T45HVC10 on 2007-09-13
Ted's first three albums are some of the greatest of all time. His next 2 or 3 are very close, as well. Then the 80's kind of got the better of him as he spent perhaps too much effort trying to sound like Foreigner. Nothing terrible, but nothing great either. I enjoyed Damn Yankess, albeit a very commercial approach still. Ted made his comeback with "Spirit of the Wild," then took it up another notch with "Craveman." And interestingly, he's topped both of those albums with "Love Grenade." This is his best album since the early 80's. Everything great about Ted's music is here: the irreverance and humor as much as ever, and the awesome hunt songs (always musically his best work). "Geronimo & Me," "Spirit of the Buffalo" & the instrumental "Eaglebrother" are standout cuts amongst an album of standout cuts. The riffs and grooves on this album are exploding, and the tone & production (nice and dry, like you're sitting in the room with the band, just the way I love it) are perfect.

Note: Ted is not for everyone. He is over the top & he speaks his mind. If you like classic Nugent, you'll like this. If you ever started disliking Ted, that probably won't change. Ted is Ted, but this is Ted at his best.

Ted Nugent's latest release, Love Grenade, proves the Motor City Madman is still a vital force in his fifth decade of performing. Despite approaching the age where most are considering retirement, Love Grenade is probably the most energetic release of his career. And while the songs here don't match the magic of his first three albums (Ted Nugent, Free For All, Cat Scratch Fever), on a whole, they're still pretty good. The opening title cut and "Still Raising Hell" are great rockers, sounding like a slightly heavier brand of rock that he helped create with Damn Yankees in the early-90's. The double entendres are still in full force as exhibited on "Girl Scout Cookies" and "Bridge over Troubled Daughters" while his love of the wilderness is on display with the excellent "Geronimo & Me", the mid-tempo "Spirit of the Buffalo", and the driving instrumental "Eagle Brother." Other strong tracks include a spirited version of "Journey to the Center of the Mind", the slow dirty blues of "Lay with Me", and the fast paced "Funk U." A few of the songs on the album's second half dip slightly ("Aborigine", "Stand", "Broadside") but are still pretty decent. All told, along with his 1995 release, Spirit of the Wild, this is Ted's best work since his peak in the `70s. Oh one more thing. See him live if you can. His live show is still amazing and he has more energy than most of the rock bands out there put together.

  • Ted Nugent - 'Love Grenade' (Eagle Records)

    By A2WQY1B8ZS7QRZ on 2008-08-16
Newest offering from Uncle Ted. One thing I'll admit, is that Nugent made sure of playing it safe on this CD - however I cannot say that I blame him at all, plus I believe he was sincerely trying to boost the sales of this current work of his. Well, duh! 'Love Grenade' is honestly the best all-new CD I've heard from Ted in years (mind you). Couldn't get enough of some of these meat-and-potato rockers like "Still Raising Hell", "Funk U", his faithful remake (and 40th anniversary) hit from his former band the Amboy Dukes - "Journey To The Center Of The Mind", "Spirit Of The Buffalo" and the true classic rock sounding "Lay With Me". Turn this one U-P! A should-have.

    By A1RRHYYI2G31TA on 2007-09-21
Another Ted Nugent offering (ho hum).... complete with borrowed lyrics (from his own past songs).. tired guitar riffs that Joe Walsh played in 1976, and Nugent still voicing the Mick Jagger mannerisms that have plagued most of his attempts at singing. In all fairness, Nugent did sing one song really well in his career, but his version didn't make the album cut. His love song.. "Heart and Soul" from Spirit of the Wild was only heard as an outtake on a Detroit radio program and it was indeed soulful and well executed. Too bad Nugent didn't recognize what might have been. This latest batch of jam riffs cum junior high lyrical scatology will be in the bargin bin before you can say Jack Kerouac

    By A2YRKOMZLC3DI2 on 2007-09-10
You can say what you like about Ted Nugent. Agree or disagree with his political beliefs, one thing is certain...This white boy from Detroit sure can play guitar. This CD offers up more of what you'd expect from the Nuge, scorching guitar and almost laughable lyrics. Personally the highlight for me is the last track, a blues dittie called "Lay With Me"- it has some classic Nugent six string magic on it.
I don't think this CD will bring any new fans to the Nugent camp, but it probably won't disappoint any long time Ted fans either. Ted is what Ted is- over the top, non stop energy. Atleast with Ted you ALWAYS know what you'll get!

  • Interesting Rather Than Devastating
    By AQB4ATVDKP1SN on 2007-10-19
What a mess. Where's Derek St. Holmes when you need him?

On the cusp of 60, Ted Nugent has a long-overdue decision to make. What's left of his career depends on it. It may behoove him and his rapidly-dwindling but still rabid fan base to either fully embrace the nod-and-a-wink hucksterism which has increasingly clogged the track listings of his albums dating back to 1977's "Cat Scratch Fever," or age semi-gracefully by concentrating on writing a really good song or riff or, bar that, just letting his arsenal of Gibson Byrdlands do the talking.

He can't have it both ways, as "Love Grenade" demonstrates. There's no denying his chops, sustain, and tone are still fully intact, but the near-novelty "Funk U" proves that sub-glottal growling and blast beats are best left to the Morbid Angels and Cannibal Corpses of the world, even if his tongue is anywhere in the vicinity of his cheek. And there's something genuinely unsettling about a near-septuagenarian writing lyrics like those in "Girl Scout Cookies" or "Bridge Over Troubled Daughters." There are worse things in life than being a lecher, but trying too hard to prove it must be at or near the top of the list.

Much of the songwriting has a phoned-in quality, "Still Raising Hell," "Stand," and "Aborigine" revisiting tried-and-true Nugent flashpoints like the lead in his pencil, the government, and bloodbrothers surrendering to the primal urges within. Sure, it's what he's built a career on and what still makes him at least entertaining, but with all of that spare time he has sitting around in hunting blinds waiting to blast the first critter to rear its head into the hereafter, certainly he could come up with something more imaginative than "Cuz I'm alive & well, still raisin' hell" or "I'm an aborigine, you're an aborigine." Or not.

Given Nugent's anti-drug stance, it's hard to understand his re-make of the Nuggets-worthy Amboy Dukes chestnut "Journey to the Center of the Mind," a song he's maintained he never knew was about chemically-enhanced introspection until long after Steve Farmer snuck it by him and onto the album of the same name back in 1968. But it chugs along chin to chin with the original and Nugent's solos snarl, swoop, and fry tubes just like they did 40 years ago.

But the album's not a total loss. When Nugent draws from a wellspring of spiritual inspiration like Native American shamanism, nature, and reducing fauna to a steaming gut pile, he usually hits on all cylinders. "Geronimo and Me," which sounds like a "Tooth, Fang & Claw" or "Call of the Wild" outtake, and "Eaglebrother," the hazy, psychedelic instrumental it segueways into, may be the best things here. "Spirit of the Buffalo," not to be confused with "The Great White Buffalo," leaves no doubts why that beast is clearly his power animal, a combination war dance, fertility ritual, and peyote dream. Sounds like a concept album in the making to me.

Apparently quite content with himself, Nugent rides off into the sunset with the unctuous blues slouch of "Lay with Me," checking "record new album" off what is an undoubtedly robust to-do list and one I'm not so sure places much of a priority on music anymore. You could do a lot worse than "Love Grenade," but he could do a lot better.

  • *****NUGENT RULES!!!!!!!!!******
    By A2VG2ELVI0CAZ0 on 2007-09-07
NOW THIS IS MORE LIKE IT!!! First and foremost, let me say that I am a die-hard NUGENT fanatic and have been for almost 30 years, so I am NOT objective. This album is, in my opinion, his best since SCREAM DREAM (which happens to be my favorite of all his albums). Why do I say that? Well, lets back up a bit.... CRAVEMAN was hailed as Ted's best album in years, and, I feel, rightly so. However.... as a faithful NUGENT disciple, I had some "concerns". First and foremost was his tone. As any long-time NUGENT fan will know, Ted's signature tone from the 1970's was the result of a very unusual (for hard/heavy rock) combination of amp

  • Definitely a Good One, Better than Craveman
    By A2ZDMWZ7QGOC2G on 2007-09-09
I bought Love Grenade when it came out last week and it's awesome..definitely better than the last album Craveman. It has more of a modern rock sound to it but without losing the traditional Nugent style. The guitar riffs and lyrics are cool and fun to listen to. The best tracks on the album are Love Grenade, Girl Scout Cookies, Broadside, and Bridge over Troubled Daughters. The blues jame session Lay With Me is nice too. Girl Scout Cookies is similar to "My Baby Likes Butter on her Gritz" from Craveman, except this one is better. I'm a big fan of Nuge's and I'll be the first to admit that some of his albums have been subpar. This is not one of them. If you are a fan of his, you need this album, definitely worth the money.

  • shut up and play yer guitar!!
    By A1IYF1H6HAO9K6 on 2007-09-10
OK,I've written 3 reviews on this cd and none have been posted..and it seems that the few negative reviews have been removed...a conspiracy?? I'll try again...i'll start by saying that i've been a Ted fan since 1969 and the Amboy Dukes..i've seen him dozens of times over the years. He is one of my favorite guitarists. Once again, Ted has taken what could have been a decent cd and ruined it with the most juvenile lyrics since..well..since the LAST Ted cd. Embarrasing enough to make you wish for Steve Farmers hippy-dippy lyrics from back in the day! Production is stellar and the guitar playing great as always..but i find a 60 year old man singing stuff like "Girl Scout Cookies" to be just plain creepy. Usually, stupid lyrics don't bother me..this does. Makes me long for an all instrumental cd and Ted before he became a cartoon character. For the kids who want the real thing, hunt down Tooth,Fang, and Claw..Call of the Wild..or better yet, Survival of the Fittest...us old time fans are STILL listening to 'em. And waiting for Ted to shut up and play his guitar.

  • Explosive Rock
    By AC1WHKYPIM3K1 on 2007-09-18
This is a very good rock album. My favorite songs are in a 4 song mini Native American theme album section of this record. There are a few songs I could have done without, such as 'Funk U' which is why I didin't give it 5 stars. Ted isn't the best singer in the world and he screeches and does verbal rants that aren't necessary. That said, overall this is a superbly rockin album and Ted can still write and perform great rock music. Some of the songs are in the incredible range. You also get a good blues track from Ted at the end of the album. All n All, this is good head bangin experience.

  • I JUST GOT SHOT BY A WACKMASTER!!!
    By A12QL3YE58F9RI on 2007-09-22
No one -- I mean no one -- can rock like Uncle Ted. Sure, he strayed with Damn Yankees and those guys from Styx and Night Ranger. But like the great white hunter he is, Ted knew you can only chase that quarry for so long. Gone are the power balads -- it's time to rock. Raunchy rock, with giant guitars, Ted style: That's what all this is about. So, get this one, a pound of freshly killed meat, an NRA membership, and learn once again why there is Detroit Madman.

  • Uncle Ted-What's Up?
    By A1SJXP62YBCOLI on 2007-09-25
Although this is still Uncle Ted...I could do w/o all the screaming after the songs are over. As a lifelong die hard Ted fan since his Amboy Dukes days...this is by far not his worst offering(the Yankees sh..tuff)...but not his best. It is however worth the price of admission. Would have given it 3 1/2. Interesting little blues thing, "Lay With Me." Keep Rockin' Uncle Ted!

  • O' Derek, Where Art Thou?
    By A3LBI4355JZZ2F on 2007-12-20
As with any Nugent album, loud, agressive guitars are the order of the day. This album rocks but is almost unlistenable for two main reasons. 1)Vapid lyrics. Sure, Ted has never been Bernie Taupin or Neil Peart, but some of the rhyme schemes are beyond cliche` with lines that wouldn't win a grade school contest. In the Special Ed. classes. "Girl Scout Cookies" is worse than a bad SNL skit. Just stupid. And "Stand" is rather ironic given Ted's Vietnam avoidance. 2)Ted's vocals. Some of this material could have been stellar with Derek St. Holmes or even Charlie Huhn on lead vocals, even given the horrible lyrics. Ted just does not have the voice to carry an album, and you would think he would have learned this by now.
A final criticism is the now mega-produced Ted guitar tone. Where's the Birdland cranked through the Fenders? That is the Ted signature tone - this record sounds stale and generic tone-wise.
With releases like this Ted will still need to rely on his mouth to keep him in the press.

  • Ted's still rocking!
    By A2L47P1JZIVK07 on 2007-09-06
So, Ted's first album in a few years. Guess what? IT ROCKS! It's typical Ted with fast hard rocking guitar songs with his signature sound from his gibsons. He plays like a madman and it sounds great. I've had the album for a day now, and Love Grenade jumps off as the killer track from the album. His guitar solos sound great and the entire sound is just really good. The only reason I didnt give it five stars is that there are one or two tracks where Ted goes back into the heavy metal stuff of Craveman that I just dont care for. But all in all, Love Grenade is in the top tier of Uncle Ted's music.

  • The Nuge releases solid effort
    By A1X939FDHHBMUI on 2007-09-06
It's been played constantly. I've been on steady diet of Nugent this week. This is a solid release. Will satisfy the long time Nuge fans.
Might even bring a few new fans aboard. Uncle Ted has some mean licks throughout and as always his playing is solid and in your face.
    My only complaint?
Well, it's that I know this album could be that much better vocally if Derek St Holmes was singing most of these tunes.
I can imagine what Derek could do with these songs. Ted's voice is okay, but his guitar playing is obviously far better thna his singing. But no sense living in the past and what was.
We've even got Jack Blades from Damn Yankee's & Night Ranger all over this album. A song writing machine and great producer.
Buy this, crank it to "11" and enjoy uncle Ted in all his unabashed glory.

  • THIS IS WHY I LOVE TED NUGENT!!! Love Grenade is ONE BAD MO-FO!!!
    By A3QKFZ5R4HI5E8 on 2007-09-07
He's the reason I picked up a guitar when I was 12. I agree with one of the other reviews... Crave was an outstanding recording but Love Grenade just "sounds and feels" more like Ted. There are certain tones and riffs that only Ted uses and they are easily identified by a Nuge-a-holic.

My favorite song so far on Love Grenade is Still Raising Hell. You damn near need a shower when that one is over!! It's kind of a mix of Klstrphk and Sweet Sally. (Just my opinion)

Also.. to the reviewer who liked Scream Dream... Did you also like Intensities In 10 Cities?? That was my favorite and I think it would have done much better on the charts had it not been live. GREAT songs on that album.

  • Awesome.
    By A3OYCWEW1TG7WQ on 2007-09-07
This has got to be the BEST album I have heard this year. This is Ted at his best and reminds me of those awesome albums from the past Scream Dream , Intensities, State Of Shock, Cat Scratch Fever. I am so glad Ted has went back to that sound. Craveman was an ok album but Love Grenade blows it away. I give this one 5 stars all the way. Play it LOUD!

  • WHAT KIND OF MUSIC IS THIS!!!
    By A3RYBJ0FTWOKZL on 2007-09-12
I've been waiting for years for a Nuge album like this. Craveman had its moments but this is far superior. Track after track leaves me wanting more! Well done, Ted.

  • Oooo, I like that last song 'Lay With Me':
    By A16HM5IJDLDQOP on 2007-09-14

But what's with the pink ribbon on the hand grenade?
    * Seems kinda hinky/kinky to me?

    Slow and mysterious guitar though.

  • The Nuge rocks on!
    By A3DKNGVB1INDHS on 2007-09-25
Ted Nugent gave us the best hard rock album of the 1990s with "Spirit of the Wild". He repeats the favor for this decade with "Love Grenade". It'll remove your head and stick it on backwards. Very highly recommended!

  • Ted still has it!
    By AOISG5L08AWSA on 2007-09-25
Some great riffs. Girl Scout Cookies is a catchy tune. I have this CD in my car right now and love it. Ted can sure play the guitar.

  • Love Grenade is the Best in years
    By A3TU15C6Q2MILO on 2007-09-26
Ted hit it out of the park with Love Grenade. This is the best he's put out in years. More Rock & Roll R&B than ever.

Buy 10 & give them away for Christmas!

  • Nuge still rocks!
    By A3QDF8HBSF6RQV on 2007-10-10
I've been a Nuge fan forever and have always loved his passion and attitude toward his beliefs in life and in his music. A lot of people do not agree with him but he is one of the few musicians out there that is not afraid to say what he truly feels and believes. The same goes for his music. It's a shame how they (who ever controls radio airplay) have neglected to play any of his new material the last few releases. It is their loss. Play Love Grenade load and often. It rocks from beginning to end. It's loud! It's raunchy! It's what you would expect from the Motor City Madman! Can anyone match this guy's energy? I think not. I like the whole record but my favs are: Love Grenade, Still Raising Hell, Geronimo and Me, Broadside, and Bridge Over Troubled Daughter.

    Keep rockin whackmaster!

  • LOVE GRENADE Is Another Great One For Terrible Ted
    By A3464G00K8ZYD1 on 2007-09-05
LOVE GRENADE is yet another great CD by Ted Nugent. This album features many references to the plight of the Native Americans and paeans to taking a stand and being one's own person. Among standouts are the title song, "Still Raising Hell", "Spirit Of The Buffalo", "Stand", "Broadside", and "Bridge Over Troubled Daughters." Nugent's advocacies of sanctions against countries that convict foreign tourists for trumped-up crimes, increased funding for law enforcement, and capital punishment/life without parole for kidnappers make LOVE GRENADE an essential purchase for both your ears AND your conscience.

He played a bunch of new songs from this cd, and I was impressed so I bought the cd and was blown away! It rocks and you have to buy it! Period.

    By A27N9PHYUUY7QM on 2007-11-01
This is one of Ted's best CDs in years!! All the songs are packed with attitude and growling guitars. The songs are all fun and at times humorous. Typical Nugent music!!
