Spider-Man 3
How does Spider-Man 3 follow on the heels of its predecessor, which was widely considered the best superhero movie ever? For starters, you pick up the loose threads from that movie, then add some key elements of the Spidey comic-book mythos (including fan-favorite villain Venom), the black costume, and the characters of Gwen Stacy and her police-captain father. In the beginning, things have never looked better for Peter Parker (Tobey Maguire): He's doing well in school; his alter ego, Spider-Man, is loved and respected around New York City. And his girlfriend, Mary Jane Watson (Kirsten Dunst), has just taken a starring role in a Broadway musical. But nothing good can last for Spidey. Mary Jane's career quickly goes downhill; she's bothered by Peter's attractive new classmate, Gwen Stacy (Bryce Dallas Howard); and the new Daily Bugle photographer, Eddie Brock (Topher Grace), is trying to steal his thunder. Enter a new villain, the Sandman (Thomas Haden Church), who can transform his body into various forms and shapes of sand and who may be connected to Peter's past in an unexpected way. There's also the son of an old villain, Harry Osborne (James Franco), who unmasked Spidey in the previous movie and still has revenge on his mind. And a new black costume seems to boost Spidey's powers, but transforms mild-mannered Peter into a mean and obnoxious boor (Maguire has some fun here).

If that sounds like a lot to pack into one 140-minute movie, it is. While director Sam Raimi keeps things flowing, assisted on the screenplay by his brother Ivan and Alvin Sargent, there's a little too much going on, and it's inevitable that one of the villains (there are three or four, depending on how you count) gets significantly short-changed. Still, the cast is excellent, the effects are fantastic, and the action is fast and furious. Even if Spider-Man 3 isn't the match of Spider-Man 2, it's a worthy addition to the megamillion-dollar franchise. --David Horiuchi

Spider-Man 2
More than a few critics hailed Spider-Man 2 as "the best superhero movie ever," and there's no compelling reason to argue--thanks to a bigger budget, better special effects, and a dynamic, character-driven plot, it's a notch above Spider-Man in terms of emotional depth and rich comic-book sensibility. Ordinary People Oscar-winner Alvin Sargent received screenplay credit, and celebrated author and comic-book expert Michael Chabon worked on the story, but it's director Sam Raimi's affinity for the material that brings Spidey 2 to vivid life. When a fusion experiment goes terribly wrong, a brilliant physicist (Alfred Molina) is turned into Spidey's newest nemesis, the deranged, mechanically tentacled "Doctor Octopus," obsessed with completing his experiment and killing Spider-Man (Tobey Maguire) in the process. Even more compelling is Peter Parker's urgent dilemma: continue his burdensome, lonely life of crime-fighting as Spider-Man, or pursue love and happiness with Mary Jane Watson (Kirsten Dunst)? Molina's outstanding as a tragic villain controlled by his own invention, and the action sequences are nothing less than breathtaking, but the real success of Spider-Man 2 is its sense of priorities. With all of Hollywood's biggest and best toys at his disposal, Raimi and his writers stay true to the Marvel mythology, honoring Spider-Man creators Stan Lee and Steve Ditko, and setting the bar impressively high for the challenge of Spider-Man 31. --Jeff Shannon

DVD Features:

The first commentary track is by director Sam Raimi and a self-deprecating Tobey Maguire speaking in tandem, and producer (and Marvel CEO) Avi Arad and coproducer Grant Curtis speaking in tandem. They discuss a number of topics, including Raimi's memory of his excitement over Richard Donner's Superman and how the character of Black Cat had to be dropped from the film. The second commentary is by six members of the Oscar-nominated effects team, and one of their primary focuses is how Doc Ock's arms were achieved by a combination of puppetry and CGI.

The centerpiece of the second disc is a massive two-hour documentary that can be viewed all at once or in 12 separate pieces. It covers the development of the story, the visual effects, costumes, stunts, and sound and music. Three shorter featurettes cover Peter Parker's struggle between his personal and hero lives, Doc Ock, and the women in Spider-Man's life, and what's interesting is how they discuss those topics not just in relation to the movies but to the comic books as well. (For example, Betty Brant and Gwen Stacy had a much greater impact in the comics.) There's a scene in which you can toggle among three different camera angles, and a gallery of 17 paintings Alex Ross created for the opening sequence. The sound and picture are spectacular, though only the Superbit edition has DTS. --David Horiuchi

Spider-Man

For devoted fans and nonfans alike, Spider-Man offers nothing less--and nothing more--than what you'd expect from a superhero blockbuster. Having proven his comic-book savvy with the original Darkman, director Sam Raimi brings ample energy and enthusiasm to Spidey's origin story, nicely establishing high-school nebbish Peter Parker (Tobey Maguire) as a brainy outcast who reacts with appropriate euphoria--and well-tempered maturity--when a "super-spider" bite transforms him into the amazingly agile, web-shooting Spider-Man. That's all well and good, and so is Kirsten Dunst as Parker's girl-next-door sweetheart. Where Spider-Man falls short is in its hyperactive CGI action sequences, which play like a video game instead of the gravity-defying exploits of a flesh-and-blood superhero. Willem Dafoe is perfectly cast as Spidey's schizoid nemesis, the Green Goblin, and the movie's a lot of fun overall. It's no match for Superman and Batman in bringing a beloved character to the screen, but it places a respectable third. --Jeff Shannon

  • This is a review of the blu-ray set and not the movies...

    By A65AYP6AZGVP8 on 2008-04-18
...since the movies in the trilogy deserve their own reviews and have been done to death already. The low cost (even lower by $10 since I bought it) is what motivated me to buy this blu-ray disc set. I already have the special editions of all three Spiderman movies on DVD, so I wanted to see what blu-ray would bring to the home theater table, having recently bought a PS3. True, the picture quality is awesome and the audio certainly will blow you away. However, there are hardly any special features - only the third disc has any to speak of. This is an underwhelming effort, considering the massive amount of space availalble on blu-ray discs. Compare, for example, the featurettes and even mini-movies on "I Am Legend".

One thing I discovered about audio selection: if you choose PCM and your receiver is not capable of processing uncompressed signals (my Onkyo only does HDMI pass-through), all you'll get is simulated surround (e.g. Dolby ProLogic). So I ended up with 5.1 and although it may not be true HD, it's good enough for my 7.1 setup. But if you're an audiophile you would have known about this already.

My summary - HD picture quality: a strong 4 stars, audio quality and options: 4 stars, special features: a dismal 1 star - hence the overall 3 star rating. I guess for the price, this set is not too bad, but considering the wealth of possibilities for the Spiderman franchise, it fell short of my expectations.

  • Worst yet!

    By A1EN25CS3BF19 on 2007-10-19
Amazingly silly dance routines. Baaaad acting. Lame, lame, lame story (I particularly love how the meteorite happens to land right next Peter and Mary Jane while making-out on a giant self-made web). And all for a mere $60 retail. Thank god for Amazon! If you're into this sort of thing that is. Don't let the effects dazzel your brain, this is truely one of the worst comic book movies, yet. And it's Spiderman, how can you screw that up.

  • A Bit Bare-Bones for A Hi-Def Release

    By ADA2CQJK7DXSB on 2007-10-30
I won't bother to review the movies here--there's plenty of reviews for that. Instead, I'm just going to give a quick overview of what to expect from the Blu-Ray trilogy.

First, SPIDER-MAN 3 is the same release as the double-disc Blu-Ray stand-alone version. It has lots of special features, commentaries, an extras disc, etc. The movie itself looks very, very good (video quality).

It's SPIDER-MAN 1&2 where the set takes a hit. Again, video quality is excellent. SPIDER-MAN 2 includes the "2.1" cut (via seamless branching, meaning you can watch the theatrical or the new version off the same disc) with extra scenes, including at least one that is VERY funny.

However, what you lose are ALL the extras from the SM 1&2 DVD releases. No commentaries, no deleted scenes (other than "2.1"), no "makings-of", etc. To me, this was more than disappointing. It's almost criminal. I expected many of the old items to appear in standard-def. Only one bonus blu-ray disc would have been required to hold every single non-commentary special feature, as BD's have 50GB of space compared to 9GB for a standard DVD. Why skimp here, Sony?

Ultimately, this is the best way to view the movies. They look AMAZING. The extras in this set, however, are underwhelming, to say the least. You're getting everything you need for SM3, but the first two films are severely shortchanged.

  • Why am I re-buying this again?

    By A24LVT9219VT5 on 2007-09-04
Great picture quality, cool, and Blu-Ray is the premier format for all of its seamless feature interaction, and high storage capacity for more bonus material.... except Spider-man 1 and 2 have no special features (aside from the 2.1 stuff). Great use of space, thanks for all those perks, BR.

So, I have to wonder, is it really worth the $70 to pick this up again?

  • Sipder-man "The High Definition Trilogy" [Blu-ray] only works on PS3
    By AZVYIPWW5I9O9 on 2008-01-16
I agree the comment from reviewer GWIRTH "ginnyww". Somehow these Sipderman blu-rays are not norm. They can only play on PS3. No luck with Samsung blu-ray players, not work with Sony blu-ray players either. Manufacturer needs to check what's going on. I also checked two sets of Sipderman blu-rays, one set from Fry's electronics, another set from Amazon, same problem, so that is not random disc defects.

  • Spidey 3
    By A35BR3QOHZ8UM1 on 2007-10-23
First of all this is a fun movie. If you are a fan of Spider-Man this film is worth it just to see Sandman and Venom. The effects in this movie are awesome and the action sequences are great. There is no way you can watch this movie and not enjoy it. There is tons of action thanks to all the villains in the film.
Having said that this film could've been the best of the 3 spider-man films. The people to blame for this are the fans and Sony. I think everyone wanted Venom in this film except the director Sam Raimi. He never felt passionate about the Venom character. Sony on the other hand wanted Venom no matter what so they could draw more fans in and probably forced Raimi to have Venom in there. The fact that this could possibly be Raimi and Maguire's last Spider-Man also played into it. Too much was crammed into this film, the thought being it might be the last for awhile.
If they had broken this movie down into 2 separate films with a Spider-Man 4 dealing more with the symbiote and Venom and part 3 dealing just with Harry Osbourne and Sandman it would've been been a million times better. As it is to many villains don't work that well. I think we already learned that with Batman & Robin.
The movie has some silly parts, like the dancing sequences but over all if you are a Spidey fan check it out. Plus the fact that it's on Blu Ray can only make the film better.

  • This is a review for the trilogy box set
    By ANZD2PD11MAVZ on 2007-10-30
Is Spider-Man 3 as good as Spider-Man 2? No. Not really.

But that doesn't mean this box set isn't a great deal. 2-Disc Special Editions for the first two films, and the 1-Disc Widescreen for the 3rd (slightly disappointing, but let's face it: so is the third movie). The trilogy as a whole is awesome, and the price can't be beat.

Don't get a bunch of extra expensive editions of Spider-Man 3. There's no deleted scenes, so there's no hope of seeing what Venom bits were not included. If you're like me, and waited until now to buy these films, ow is the chance.

  • Spiderman 3 was horrible.
    By AAD1W9GBYWY1W on 2007-11-07
Personally I would NOT buy the trilogy because spiderman 3 was horrible, 1 & 2 where great though. 3 not so good!

  • Great Trilogy for the Family
    By A1B124AVX0QH2B on 2007-10-22
I enjoyed these movies and plan on buying them to watch on my playstation 3.

  • Great picture and sound on Blu-ray
    By A3K73IFELUXHVP on 2008-01-24
I bought this just to get the first 2 movies in high def. The third movie isn't nearly as good as the others, but I'll still watch it again. "Spiderman" and "Spiderman 2" are perfect comic book movies. The dialogue is class Stan Lee, which could come off as cornball, but Sam Raimi makes it work. I'm a little perplexed that the extras that were on the standard definition discs are not present on the Blu-ray editions. Blu-ray holds so much information, there must have been room for them.

  • Amazing ! Must Buy

I cant wait to get this movie on Blu Ray..I already own the first 2 but its gonna be worth seeing them on Blu Ray in HD!!

  • Spidey Trilogy on HD
    By A5H8VLE7L7SB on 2007-10-17
Well, everyone who has seen the three movies by now will probably agree that the first spidey was good, the second was great and the third was a letdown in comparison to the first two.

This set has the three films, so I think it would be unfair to punish the first two because of the third (like many reviewers have done by now). To watch Spider-Man 2 in full HD glory is going to be a blast for every Spider-Man fan out there.

The first movie is a very good movie that is worth enjoying in HD, the second is one of the best superhero films in history and the third... well, the story falls short after the big anticipation generated by Spidey 2 (to many villains end up being a mess like others have put it), and in some points it just becomes too campy to endure, but nobody can deny that in terms of visuals it is still worthy of HD. Add to this all the extras on HD as well and you've got yourself a nice package.

The trilogy as a whole is entertaining, and Spider-Man 2 has story, deep villain, epic moments... (I know, I can't spot praising Spider-Man 2), and despite being weak in comparison to the others, the third film isn't that bad. It just had a lot to live up to, and it failed to do so, but you still get some awesome action sequences, and this set in particular includes the other two films.

So, the question you should ask yourself: Are three movies worthy of being seen in HD worth of the price? If you enjoyed the Spidey trilogy enough to want to buy it, and if you appreciate High Definition, then I think the answer is definitely yes.

  • A trilogy worth owning
    By AZ112AD69W7XG on 2007-10-29
An amazing boxset with TWO of the best Superhero movies of recent memory. The third... well not so much. Either way it is a trilogy and you can't ignore that the third didn't exist (hence the trilogy worth owning part). As for the bluray transfers, all are top notch and naturally get progressively better based on the age of each movie. I love it.

  • Awesome trilogy with stunning video and audio
    By A2HTJHQOOHAG65 on 2007-10-31
The most satisfying action blu-ray release so far this year. Awesome 5-star MPEG-4 AVC video with stunning sound. Uncompressed PCM 5.1 for SP3 with loads of extras. Beautiful packaging. A must own!

  • Great quality video!
    By A2KA27UB363RNG on 2007-11-09
Giving this movie a 5 star because the quality is amazing blu ray is here to stay ROCK ON BLU RAY NATION!

  • Worth the Purchase if You Own an HDTV
    By AM8GSBLI2S0MG on 2007-11-25
I bought this DVD set as my first foray into the world of Blu-Ray and I must say I am not disappointed. The picture quality (especially on Spider-Man 2 & 3) pops off the screen even in 720p. If you're thinking of buying these movies in HD I'm sure you've seen them already in some other format so I won't bother reviewing the films themselves. The reason I gave these DVDs 4 stars instead of 5, however, is because of the complete lack of extras on the first two movies. Also the amount of grain is higher in dark scenes in Spider-Man compared to the other 2 sequels (which have almost none). Other than these small complaints I would say definitely pick this set up if you want some nice demo discs for your collection.

  • Doesn't work!
    By A3GBOYKQJF6DB7 on 2008-01-05
We have ordered this DVD set 2 times and we have had to send it back each time. We also bought a set a SAMS CLUB today and it doesn't work either. Yes, we tried to play all 3 discs and in every DVD player in the house. We LOVE the movies and wanted to share the fun with our son who is now so disappointed. Save your receipt!

  • Spider-Man Trilogy

My son was so excited to get this for Christmas. He loves these movies. This was a great investment as he watches them over and over.

  • It's your friendly neighborhood Spider-Man
    By A1NG43R0NCACX7 on 2008-01-19
I purchased this product shortly after it was released on Blu-ray. Now I am rating the blu-ray experience more than anything else, because it is a blu-ray trilogy. I am not a movie critic (atleast I don't get paid for it) and the Spidey movies have been out for a while-we all know if we like them or don't.

On blu-ray these movies looks amazing. I have a 1080i DLP (4 years old), Playstation 3, and XBOX 360 Elite with HD drive. I run higher end HDMI from Monster Cable, as well as Monster optical for sound. I have a 7.1 surround sound home theater and a 250W sub pushing the base. Not the best setup but absloutely satisfying.

The clarity of the blu-ray discs is amazing. Now, that isn't to say that every release is worthy of the new technology, but for this release it is. The special effects are clear and crisp. The sound is wonderful. Just to make sure I was enjoying every little bit of my new experience, I watched the movies on regular DVD before putting in my BD's and I have to say that in some parts of the movie I heard sounds that were not audible before. It is like night and day.

We can complain all we want about the content of the last installment in the trilogy, but what is done is done. Yeah, I know that the character development was lacking in 3. Yes, I agree that Topher Grace was a terrible choice for Venom/Eddie Brock... but this is about the technical side.. Blu-ray is an excellent media choice for those looking for the next gen of high definition.
