Incredible Performance By ASSFEY7BG5KIO on 2007-09-08
I was there the night of March 25th 2007 and what an evening it was. I know that's cliche but of the 9 times I have seen him, this was the absolute best show I have seen yet. Not only did he play for 3 1/2 hours, but he rocked it out like only the greatest of all time can. To hear his voice now performing 60 Years On to open his 60th birthday was beautiful, and that was just the first of 33 songs! He played for the die hard fans Where to Now St Peter, Ballad of a Well Known Gun, All the Young Girls Love Alice, and many others we haven't heard live in well over 20 years at least. If you're an Elton fan, you most defiantely have to get this. You'll fall in love all over again. If you are just a casual Elton listener, this will make you really understand how wonderful he truly is, and hopefully get you to dig deeper into the archive that is Reg Dwight's music. I will never forget that night forever. It was simply amazing and now everyone will get to experience just how magical the evening was.
Incredible Bargain By A2XBIA6885LVFT on 2007-10-03
When you throw in all of the bonus features, this totals about 4 hours worth of live performances. 90% Elton's hits are here in some form, many of them more than once. It also comes with a small booklet that contains about 20 pages of killer photos. In this day and age of aging rock stars cashing in on cheaply made and poorly executed "products", this one is a goldmine.
Elton's Best Madison Square Garden Concert By AKT8TGIT6VVZ5 on 2008-02-18
Elton may sound a bit more ragged as a singer these days, but this excellent DVD demonstrates why he and his partner, lyricist Bernie Taupin, must be regarded as one of the great songwriting duos in popular music. This commemorative DVD celebrates not only his 60th birthday, but also his 60th live concert at one of his favorite venues, New York City's Madison Square Garden. Drawing primarily from his early 1970s catalog, Elton and his current band - which includes long-time band mates guitarist Davey Johnstone and drummer Nigel Olsson - gave the audience a truly memorable show, which also featured cellist Martin Tillman and a New York City youth chorus. Among the highlights include memorable performances of such early Elton John classics as "Where to Now Saint Peter?", "Hercules" and "High Flying Bird", as well as more recent hits such as "Empty Garden" - his memorable tribute to John Lennon - "Sad Songs (Say So Much)", "Something About The Way You Look Tonight", and last, but not least, "The Bridge", from his latest album, "The Captain and The Kid". The bonus DVD includes live performances spanning four decades, including many with his original band, featuring the late Dee Murray on bass, along with Davey Johnstone and Nigel Olsson. Without a doubt, this is an absolute must for fellow diehard Elton John fans.
Initial listing was incorrect as 4x3 AR, now the soundtrack is not legacy DD 5.1 compatible, only PCM By AC85OWCJX4GUP on 2007-10-27
I was about to pre order this Blu-ray disc, both because of Elton and because of the Blu-ray quality, however, it was originally listed as 1.33:1 aspect ratio, which is ridiculous considering we have HDTV since 1998 at 16:9 (1.78:1), additionally, the soundtrack was listed as limited to AC-3 and DTS, which is obsolete when blu-ray offers the possiblity on any of the hi-bit audio codecs (Dolby True-HD, DTS-HD, DTS Master Audio), or even PCM Multichannel, a must for music recordings.
I was contacted by the EVP of Universal Music to make me aware that the aspec ratio spec was a mistake, but he did not mention anything about the soundtrack though, and requested me if I could change my review.
As a courtesy I am investing my time in doing that, but if Amazon and Universal Music can not have a testing area and users that verify data before it goes into production it leaves much to be desired.
The aspect ratio spec has been now modified to 1.78:1, but I am not pre-ordering anything until I actually see the product on the shelves with clear specifications of video and audio, I can not trust either of these companies now.
Even with the above experience I ordered the disc and I knew something else will be wrong on this experience.
As anyone can notice the soundtrack specification was never indicated on the Amazon specs, so I assumed it would at least be compatible with legacy DD 5.1 or legacy DTS 5.1 streamed audio to use the typical legacy optical or coaxial connections most A/V reeceivers have.
Well, it does not, it only has PCM 2.0 or 5.1 uncompressed audio on the disc which requires an HDMI connection to a A/V receiver or pre/pro with HDMI and also with the ability to handle uncompressed PCM.
This is a seriours drawback of this audio recording because it renders the audio useless for most A/V receivers that have only have legacy DD or DTS decoders expecting to receive the signal from optical or coaxial connections, not HDMI.

THIS IS THE ONE!! By A236HOR5PFM15P on 2007-10-13
I love Elton John. The DVDs I own are: "Rocket Man Number Ones", "One Night Only -- The Great Hits" and to "To Russia with Elton". Without question, this is BY FAR his best DVD. I cannot recommend it more strongly!
- Elton 60 Specs Updated
     By A1A7227BV71YJ8 on 2007-11-08
The specs for this Blu Ray title have been updated to reflect the correct aspect ratio of 1.78:1 for the picture. It also features a 1080p HD picture, uncompressed PCM 5.1 audio and uncompressed PCM stereo audio.
This is also the only disc that features the entire 60th birthday show from Madison Square Garden in it's uninterrupted entirety. The standard def DVD could not store the entire show on one disc so it was split apart.
The show is breathtaking in high defintion, the audio sounds amazing!
- Finally, the Elton John DVD worth owning! A Landmark.
     By AXAX02ZG1B0O3 on 2007-11-04
Past DVD releases from EJ have been frustratingly poor quality, and there wasn't much to choose from at that. The 4-disc box set included a decent performance in the youth choir set, but that exception, we've been handed terrible audio quality, incomplete setlists, etc.
This DVD makes up for all of that, and finally delivers the EJ concert that new and old fans can appreciate as the best of him in this phase of his career. It's every bit as landmark as his classic performance with the Sydney symphony twenty years ago.
As a longtime fan, the inclusion of less commercial hits such as High Flying Bird, Where To Now St. Peter, Ballad of a Well Known Gun, and a few others, is something special, especially since some of these have not been performed with the current band before, but the interpretations and performances are excellent.
The sheer number of songs performed (3 1/2 hours!) in the concert is remarkable. The hits are (mostly) all included-- Goodbye Yellow Brick Road and Candle In The Wind are the two that come to mind as as most likely to be missed by casual fans.
Elton's piano playing and the band fills are not the same old bits you might have heard if you attended any one of his concerts in the last ten years or so-- they have really made an effort to make this performance unique, and reasserted the band's and EJ's cohesiveness in the process. It's what you would expect from them at this stage in their evolution with no sense of jadedness. Amazing given the almost insane number of performances they have been churning out in recent years!
I am always amazed at the number of little interpretations within the details of some of the most repeated favorites. Elton's constant re-working and tweaking of the Rocket Man solo, for example, and if you've heard Your Song a thousand times live, I think you might hear it performed just a little bit different almost every time, including this concert's send-off finale. All of this makes the whole show compelling even for fans who have seen live him dozens of times before.
There are also some fantastic extras included. In all, over 5 hours of quality music and performances!
So, if you have been disappointed in prior DVD releases from EJ, or if you are fan looking for something new from him, this DVD is a sure favorite. It is easily the most definitive and entertaining release of any kind from him since his life and career were reformed in the early 1990's.
- EVERY night is allright for Rockin!!!
     By A81P47EIXM8HA on 2007-10-02
What an incredible package...
the concert celebrating his 60th ...birthday and MSG show...are great and filmed well performed well...just a thrilling collection of all time greatest hits and lesser played but still great songs!
the bonus stuff (vintage filmed performances through the years and with many early tv appearances) is a treasure trove for fans that frankly would be worth this price on their own!
and a nice fat booklet with a bunch of great pix...this is NOT a cheap money grab like so many DVDs...this is CLASS!
FABULOUS
I had almost forgot why I loved Elton as a high schooler in the 70's...he was our Beatles in that respect..
happy Birthday Elton..
Keep Rockin!
- Sixty Years On!
     By AWPODHOB4GFWL on 2008-05-25
Elton John has produced a dozen or so concert DVD's, but this is the ultimate in entertainment. Recorded on his 60th birthday at his 60th performance at Madison Square Garden, this DVD excels in pure entertainment satisfaction. Over two DVD's you witness thirty-three classic songs from over the last five decades including such little performed gems like, "Hercules" and "Roy Rogers". The standards like, "Crocodile Rock" and "Funeral For A Friend/Love Lies Bleeding" are also lent out in slightly new versions that more than please.
Unlike the Madison Square Garden show he previously released with shots of fans over-riding the stage show; this one showcases those people as well as dozens of famous political, musical and acting celebrities. Robin Williams and Whoopie Goldberg bring on a fantastic, "Happy Birthday" and Bernie Taupin, who never appears on stage, gives a heart-felt salute to Elton on his birthday. It's all amazingly good fun and very emotional.
The light show is fantastic and the sound is pin-point perfect with a large young choir singing backstage that enhances the performance like no other Elton John has given. It truly feels like the celebration in New York City that night was something very special.
That's not all. This double disc set also includes eighteen "live, rare & unseen" performances from over the years that are a stunning reminder of what a fantastic musician Elton John is. On top of that, there is a section called, "Elton's New York Stories" that includes four personal emotional song videos of Elton that just pack more of a whollop you would not expect.
The sound quality (DVD, dts, 5.1) is superb enough to hear audience members actually talking and the band never sounded more crisp. Add to that an extensive booklet of liner notes and you have a keeper of a Birthday celebration. Elton John - you are a spectacle of a celebration!

- Hidden Track Mystery Solved
     By A2X0OENSBH1MLW on 2007-10-31
To see the hidden track "Saturday Night's Alright for Fighting" press REPEAT ALL during the closing credits when "The Bridge" is playing. Then, you will see it.
- Buy for posterity
     By A2ADKSXXUX1ISV on 2007-11-10
Didn't have time to watch this more than once, I just bought it today, but this is what sticks out: Deep cuts like "Holiday Inn," "All the Young Girls Love Alice," basically all the stuff from the forgotten masterpiece Madman Across The Water, rendered perfectly at the big MSG show; a very well-rehearsed band, from Davey and Nigel to the excellent NYC children's choir. And the archival footage is priceless, from before he lost his voice. "Someone Saved My Life Tonight," indeed. Considering what concert tix cost today, this is a real bargain.
- A Performance for the Ages
     By A3EBNTLB904L5B on 2007-12-03
This performance was indeed classic Elton John. The concert is some three hours long. EJ tells the audience, "We're going to be here a long time. We had to throw out 20 songs." Considering songs like "All the Young Girls Love Alice", "Roy Rogers", "Hercules", "Holiday Inn", "Better Off Dead", and other deep album cuts made the set list, it leads me to wonder which songs got cut from the list? If the songs that were cut were his hits since the 90s then that's fine with me. But I certainly would have enjoyed more from "Goodbye Yellowbrick Road" and "Captain Fantastic".
It is an amazing performance with extended versions of most of his great songs. "Mad Man Across the Water" has some jazz-like piano from EJ, as does "Benny and the Jets" and "Rocket Man". "Rocket Man" is over 13 minutes long as EJ and Davey Johnstone get bluesy with a piano-guitar thing. My personal favorites from Yellowbrick Road, "Saturday Night's Alright..." and "Funeral for a Friend/Love Lies Bleeding" are the icing on the cake.
A reviewer or two have complained about the Brooklyn Youth Chorus kids. I thought they were fantastic. These kids ranging in age from maybe 10 years old through high school age could sing. There are dozens of them, and they are stationed above and behind the band. I found it kind of awkward that young kids are belting out "better off dead...better off dead" and "bitch...bitch". But it was cool that these kids were told to relax and have a great time out there as they were very lively and spontaneous, rockin' and groovin' to tunes decades older than they are.
The visual was fantastic and the audio almost top knotch. EJ's piano was recorded better than any other live performance, but once yet again Johnstone's guitar is considered a back ground instrument, for the most part. During the extended jam in "Rocket Man" he's echoing EJ's piano chops on acoustic but you barely hear it (When he went in electric he was more audible). His solos in "Love Lies Bleeding" are barely audible---aggrevating. When I saw this band around '80 or '81, I remember that Davey Johnstone's guitar was big time for 3 hours. You heard every note, if memory serves. They were a rock band that night, starting with his chops on "Funeral/Love Lies Bleeding" to open that show. Only the "Barcelona" DVD is Johnstone a bit livelier in the mix. My other miner complaint is the bottom end in the audio is lacking. You hear bass but you don't really feel it. The kick drum should be thumping me in the chest, and it's just there. Otherwise, like I said, EJ's vocals and piano has never been recorded better. Solid full audio mix with the kids as well.
Cameramen, throughout the event, located several celebrities in the audience, such as Michael Caine, Ozzy and Sharon Osbourne, Bill Clinton (minus Hillary---if he had a date, you couldn't see her), Elizabeth Hurley, and Anne Hathaway.
The concert is split over 2 discs, and the old live footage is split over the same 2 discs, which is odd. I know I have several complaints for a 5-star review. It's still a great buy, and a lot of product for the money. It must have been a phenominal night, and I heartily recommend the purchase of this show, even if you already own "One Night" from MSG. This is a superior performance over that one. There are no musical guests on Elton 60 to ruin the classics---a very good thing. What a treat this was to experience.
- 60 and going strong
     By A2QOGNHWYGATZ on 2007-12-18
EJ may not have the voice he did 20 years ago, but he more than makes up for it in enthusiasm and experience. He's one of rock's most prolific songwriter/performers and his music still rocks loud and strong.
His concerts at MSG are always special and this DVD is no exception.
I totally enjoyed it even though the clips of his old concerts are mixed in with the new concert. I would have prefered the old clips kept separate.
- Very disappointing!!
     By A3B8O8FM9XQQ8Z on 2008-01-19
BU with 1080i, these days? OK, image is very good, but 1080p should be mandatory! No Dolby Digital 51. nor DTS 5.1, even if the new HD formats would be available? OK, but PCM only sucks!
Honestly, I hope the producers issue a new version, which will need two discs of course, with the missing above.
More expensive? Sure, but not frustrating!!! If concerned about cost the consumer can buy the SD version, which includes DD and DTS, as well as many extras...
Bad, bad job!
- great video
     By A3UVDGO3VL3OLT on 2008-02-08
THE VIDEO QUALITY IS SUPERB YOU CAN SEE THE HAIRS ON HIS KNUCKLES AS HE PLAYS I JUST LONG FOR THE OLD ELTON'S VOICE.HE DOESN'T REALLY SING THE SONG LIKE THEY'RE HIS AND HE LOST ALOT OF RANGE. I'M A LONG TIME FAN AND CAN REMEMBER WHEN HE SANG LIKE HE CARED.LIKE THE SONG WAS PART OF HIM. I EVEN PURCHASED THE BOX SET THAT HAS THE STANDARD DEF VIDEO BECAUSE OF THE RARITIES VIDEOS, FROM THE SEVENTIES.THE VIDEO QUALITY STNKS BUT THE CONTENT IS SPECTACULAR.CHECK IT OUT HE SHOULD RELEASE MORE OLD STUFF.HE WAS REALLY THE BEST IN THE 70'S.
- Best concert DVD ever!!
     By A2K6U9814IUIVG on 2008-02-28
First of all, anyone who thinks this bluray is anything other than spectacular, needs their eyes and ears examined!!
I don't care if it's 1080i or 1080p or whatever.... It is without doubt the best looking and sounding concert DVD bar none.
It's also great to see and hear him perform some of his best music, the stuff that was written and performed before the onslaught of commercial crap that he's come out with in recent years......if that's what your looking for then buy any one of many DVDs that contain his newer stuff. If you want to see him perform his best work, then buy this dvd.
Why would anyone complain that it's too long?? Isn't that one of the many benefits of DVD....Just skip past what you don't want to see.
Take this review to hart (along with the several other good reviews) and ignore the idiots who gave it a bad review.......They probably don't even know what a Bluray disc is!!
- whole concert on one disc?
     By A2VTIKTKE98APT on 2007-10-08
do i have the right dvd or do i have a defect-the description of this dvd concert is that the concert is on disc 1 and extras on disc 2. other reviews appears to make it that the concert is on 1 disc-the one that i have-the concert is split between 2 discs and that the balk of the extras are on disc 1. if it is split, i don,t understand why they made it this way- the concert could not fit on 1 disc?.besides that, its a great dvd so far
- Best EJ Live Set- Ever!!
     By A28OWZDW0B1GRH on 2007-10-10
Unfortunately, I wasn't at this show, unlike some of the other reviewers (but I did see Streisand at the Garden last year). But the DVD, with excellent sound and visuals, almost makes up for it. This is the best live set Elton has ever released; the concert alone is absolutely perfect, the kind of ultimate set packed with both hits and rarely-performed fan-favourites we've been dreaming of for years. Add to this the collections of rare live performances after the separate sections of the concert on each disc, and we have perfection. And, with the collector's edition, the CD of concert highlights and the booklet full of great photos adds another dimension to an already amazing package! For Elton fans, it doesn't get any better than this (unless you actually were at the show, of course). Short of actually seeing Elton at the Garden- which I swear I will do one of these days- you can't do much better than to buy this DVD set. But spend the extra dough and get the collector's box set, with the CD and the booklet; it's worth the price. I'll conclude with a belated happy 60th birthday to Elton, and wish him many more.
- Elton's 60th birthday gift TO his fans
     By AJNY6QYZAX3KJ on 2007-10-13
Wow! When I heard the set list for Elton's 60th birthday concert at Madison Square Garden, I was eager to see this show. Ordinarily, you give gifts to a person on their birthday. This concert video and the many extra live performance videos are a wonderful gift from Elton TO his fans. Elton digs deep into his extensive catalog to give die-hard fans like me a chance to hear and see him perform songs we've never seen live. I have seen Elton live four times and I have never seen him play "Holiday Inn", "Hercules", and "Ballad of a Well Known Gun" among others. Sure most of the hits are here, but those are available on multiple other live soundtracks and videos. This is the most complete Elton concert I have seen. He is in excellent voice, backed by an energetic youth choir. His piano playing is awesome as always. The sound mix is great. Long-time bandmates Davey Johnstone and Nigel Olsson are along for the fun.
As if the concert wasn't enough, both discs are packed with archival live performances from the early 1970's up to 2006. It is fun to see how Elton and his mates have changed over the years. One thing hasn't changed: they have always been great performers.
This two-disc set is a treasure for Elton's fans.
- Are you serious? You honestly think this is 1.33??
     By A3SF8SY9RRSLUN on 2007-10-29
I am basing my review on the "content" quality of future BD disc in that the Elton John performance is AMAZING! And considering this performance on DVD is 1.78:1 Anamorphic Widescreen, the BD disc will be 1.78:1 NOT 1.33:1 . . .
- GREAT - but where is hidden song?

I LOVE this cd -the archival footage is great an plentiful - we get lots of songs that haven't been well repped on previous cds - however - i still thing the CONCERT IN NY where he DONT GO BREAKING MYHEART with kiki dee is still the one to beat - still - pretty awesome. one note - i heard there was a hidden demo track of THE BRIDGE on here? anyone else here about this?

- Best Concert sound and picture so far
     By A1L52QTXTM3BE8 on 2008-02-02
First of all, the picture is outstanding on my Panasonic BD30 machine. You need to connect your blue ray player to output 5 channels directly to you amp and select the PCM 5.1 sound. You will be totally knocked out by what you see and hear. I saw Elton last year in concert in Boston and this is like being there!
Yes you need a Blue Ray player - that is what it is about. I have not seen many set ups in the big box stores that show off the audio - seems it is all about the video at these stores. Well, this disc should be a must for anyone who want to show off what the fuss is all about. HD audio and video in one package. Does for Blue Ray what the first Matrix did for DVD. Once you see and hear this disc there is no going back.
I think Elton has never been in better form and the song choice is fine. This concert is over 3 hours and 15 minutes long. You really get your money's worth on this one.
- Spot the celebs
     By AM2S69VQLWXUA on 2008-02-18
This Bluray DVD has first rate video quality and the 5.1 PCM audio sounds great. It's probably true that a younger Elton had more vocal range, but that's not to say that this performance is bad. I enjoyed this DVD. It would have been better for this Bluray DVD if Elton and band members were in more colorful costume (surprised to see Elton in black), but just the same the video looks great. You'll have fun trying to name all the celebrity's that the camera picks out of the audience during the performance.

- Blue-Ray
     By A3L3EEJYMUPM02 on 2008-02-29
I was disappointed in the video picture quality for this Blue-Ray title. It look like a 480P DVD picture. The Dolby 5.1 audio sound was another disappointment; thin sounding, no punch. They didn't use DTS 5.1 audio sound. Why?
- Magnifico

Excelente concierto, digno de un gran artista en su cumpleaños 60.
Contiene un apreciable numero de sus exitos, con buen video y audio.
El material adicional es interesante, ya que esta dedicado a su carrera artistica. Imprescindible para los amantes del genero.
- Very solid performance 60 years on.
     By A2NL6FXAX75QKF on 2008-06-03
A nice addition to my collection of EJ live videos. There weremore shots of celebrity's in the audience than I cared to see, but he plays piano better than ever, and the band is stellar. It was nice to hear some of the older somewhat obscure tunes from Tumbleweed Connection, Madman Across The Water and such from his very early days. This package also contains live footage from some older videos some that have never been aired. There's also some video of EJ and the Band live in St. Luke's Church.
- The Greatest Concert I Never Went To.
     By A1534MBU6VJXYN on 2008-08-16
I remember when news first hit about Elton John's 60th birthday concert. I remeber nagging my father to have his friend who has always managed to score us tickets to great concerts work her magic for this legendary show. Unfortunately, we were not able to attned this show, and I remember being incredibly disappointed for weeks, especially since the live coverage.
Fortunately, a dvd of the complete show was released and I snatched it up immediately. I was not allowed to open it until my Birthday, so I awaited patiently until the big day came. When it did, me and my dad watched it in our basement, on the new Plasma we had pruchased, and we were blown away by what we had missed.
Right from the opening "Sixty Years On," you instantly feel like you're there. You can defintiely feel the energy from the crowd, and the sound and picture quality is first rate. If you have a top quality sound system, I suggest playing it LOUD.
As for Elton himself, he has simply never been better. His voice has darkened with age, and his top range is kaput, but he plays and sings better than ever. At a point in his career where he could easily do an entire show on autopilot, he sings these songs with more passion and fervor than he did 30 years ago. Even seemingly tired hits like "Bennie And The Jets" and "Philadelphia Freedom" sounds fresh and energized.
The show's setlist is a solid mix of rare studio track and big hits. The first half is a veritable selection of rarely heard studio tracks that Elton has a ball dusting off, including "Madman Across The Water," the chilling "Where To Now, St. Peter," "Hercules," "Ballad Of A Well Known Gun," "Holiday Inn" and "High Flying Bird."
The second half is a top notch menu of Greatest Hits, with a few surprises such as "Levon," "Honky Cat," (the first time in years it has been performed with a full band) and a thrilling "All The Young Girls Love Alice." Elton and his band are absolutely ferocious throughout, playing with a bite and energy not since Elton's 1970s' glory days.
Disc 2 contains several bonus performances from 1970 to 2006, including a selection of New York based performances, among them a haunting performance of "We All Fall In Love Sometimes / Curtains" at a 2005 Madison Square Garden concert, as well as legendary performances such as his 1976 solo concert in Edinburgh and his phenomenal 1984 Night And Day concerts at Wembley Stadium.
Overall, this is an absolutely thrilling concert dvd, especially for those unable to attned the real show. It is one of the most intensely satisfying live performances ever issued.
