Add a zesty style to your mobile computing with the stunning good looks of the dove white Sony VAIO VGN-CR220E/L notebook PC, which offers unique eye-catching features, impressive attention-to-detail, and an amazingly thin and light profile. Aside from its jaw-dropping good looks, it's also an entertainment powerhouse. The instant AV Mode feature enables you to start watching a DVD or listening to music with the push of a single button--without having to boot up the system--and the convenient, built-in multimedia control buttons also let you control all playback functions.

This notebook is powered by the 2.0 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo T7250 processor, which offers a top-of-the-line 800 MHz front-side bus speed and 2 MB L2 cache. The Core 2 Duo processor provides an optimized, multithreaded architecture for improved gaming and multitasking performance, as well as excellent battery management. It also includes Intel's 4965 AGN wireless LAN, which will connect to draft 802.11n routers and offers compatibility with 802.11a/b/g networks as well. A built-in 1.3 megapixel digital web camera lets you quickly snap photos and participate in live video chats. Other features include a bright 14.1-inch XBRITE-ECO screen, 200 GB hard drive, 2 GB of installed RAM (4 GB maximum capacity), multi-format/dual-layer DVD+/-RW drive (which also burns CDs), ExpressCard 34 slot, and both Memory Stick and SD memory cart slots.

Microsoft Windows Vista Home Premium includes all of the Windows Media Center capabilities for turning your PC into an all-in-one home entertainment center. In addition to easily playing your DVD movies and managing your digital audio library, you'll be able to record and watch your favorite TV shows (even HDTV). Vista also integrates new search tools throughout the operating system, includes new parental control features, and offers new tools that can warn you of impending hardware failures.

The Basics

  • Processor: The Intel Core 2 Duo T7250 processor has a 2.0 GHz processor speed, super-fast 800 MHz front-side bus (FSB), and a large 2 MB L2 cache. (An L2, or secondary, cache temporarily stores data; and a larger L2 cache can help speed up your system's performance. The FSB carries data between the CPU and RAM, and a faster front-side bus will deliver better overall performance.)

The Intel Core 2 Duo processor has two computational execution cores in a single processor, providing greater system response when running multi-threaded applications simultaneously with no significant increase in power consumption. It's optimized for multitasking and is ready to support the Microsoft Windows Vista operating system. It can simultaneously run multiple demanding applications--such as graphics-intensive games or serious number-crunching business productivity applications--while downloading music or running virus-scanning security programs in the background. Some of the advanced Intel innovations of the Core 2 Duo processor include:

    • Smart Memory Access: Improves system performance by hiding memory latency, thus optimizing the use of available computer data bandwidth to provide data to the processor when and where it is needed.
    • Advanced Digital Media Boost: Effectively doubles the execution speed for instructions used widely in multimedia and graphics applications.
    • Dynamic Power Coordination: Coordinates Enhanced Intel SpeedStep Technology and idle power-management state (C-states) transitions independently per core to help save power.
    • Deeper Sleep with Dynamic Cache Sizing: Saves power by flushing cache data to system memory during periods of inactivity to lower CPU voltage.

  • Hard Drive: The 200 GB Serial ATA hard drive provides more than enough capacity for storing a large audio and video library, as well as extra space required for video editing. However its 4200 RPM speed is a bit slower than current standard hard drives. This SATA hard drive also quickens the pace with a higher speed transfer of data--akin to FireWire and USB 2.0.

  • Memory: The 2 GB of installed RAM (2 x 1024 MB DDR2) will satisfy many users, but this notebook's two DIMM slots have a maximum 4 GB RAM capacity--perfect for high-end video editing and 3-D gaming. It also offers a top-of-class 667 MHz speed. To receive the faster data transfer benefits of the dual-channel DDR2 RAM, any RAM additions require memory modules of same capacity and clockspeed.

  • DVD/CD Drive: The dual-layer DVD drive is compatible with a wide range of formats, including both DVD+RW and DVD-RW discs, CD-RW discs, and dual-layer (DL) DVD+/-R discs, which can hold up to 8.5 GB of data--great for backing up your MP3 collection or your most important documents. It features the following speeds: 4x for DVD+R DL, 4x for DVD-R DL, 8x for both single layer DVD+R/-R, 8x for single layer DVD+RW, 6x for single layer DVD-RW, 5x for DVD-RAM, and 24x for CD-R/RW. It reads DVD-ROM discs at 8x and CD-ROMs at 24x.

  • Keyboard & Mouse: This notebook has a standard 82-key keyboard (2mm stroke and 19.05mm pitch) and electro-static two-button touchpad. Playback controls include play/pause, stop, forward, rewind, AV mode, mute, volume +/-, capture, and display off.
Screen, Video & Audio
You'll enjoy razor-sharp graphics and widescreen movies with the 14.1-inch WXGA high-definition screen, with its 1280 x 800-pixel resolution. The XBRITE-ECO technology delivers brilliant colors and stunning clarity with efficient power usage, and it features an anti-reflective coating to minimize reflection and ensure a beautifully clear image from any viewing angle.

Video is powered by the Intel Graphics Media Accelerator X3100, which uses shared video memory (up to 358 MB allocated from the system memory) and provides Windows Vista Aero interface support and enhanced 3-D graphics performance--delivering over 2x scores on 3-DMark 06. Intel Clear Video Technology provides outstanding video playback with sharper image quality, increased clarity, and customizable color controls. It also enables enhanced visual quality of interlaced content on progressive displays.

Networking, Connectivity & Expansion
Be ready for the next platform in wireless connectivity with the integrated quad-mode Intel Wireless 4965AGN Wi-Fi chip. Based on the draft 802.11n Wi-Fi specification, it offers up to five times the performance and twice the wireless range as existing 802.11g wireless. It's also backward compatible with 802.11b/g networks (commonly found in home routers and Wi-Fi hotspots) as well as 802.11a networks (which has a higher throughput, but more limited range--great for closed office environments).

This notebook also includes a next-generation ExpressCard 34 card slot (no PCMCIA slot), which lets you take advantage of thinner, faster, and lighter expansion cards for even more advanced wireless, networking, storage, and security features. Here's the full list of connectivity options:

  • 3 USB 2.0 ports for connecting a wide range of peripherals--from digital cameras to MP3 players
  • 1 FireWire (also known as IEEE 1394 or i.Link) port for connecting digital video camcorders and other peripherals
  • Video output: 1 VGA, 1 S-Video
  • 1 ExpressCard/34 slot
  • Memory Stick/Memory Stick DUO slot (with MagicGate functionality)
  • Secure Digital memory card slot (compatible with MMC cards)
  • 1 headphone jack, 1 microphone jack
It also has an integrated 56K modem (V.90) and an RJ-45 LAN network port (for a 10/100 Ethernet connection to networks and DSL/cable modems).

Operating System
Windows Vista Home Premium is the operating system for users with advanced computer needs, and it includes all of the Windows Media Center capabilities for turning your PC into an all-in-one home entertainment center for watching DVD movies and accessing your digital audio library. You can also use Windows Media Center to record and watch your favorite TV shows (even HDTV) and to access new kinds of online entertainment content. Computers that include Windows Vista Home Premium and an auxiliary Windows SideShow display will also allow you to access key data even when your computer is off. It is also easier than ever to share files between other PCs in your household and to manage your laptop computer settings to more securely connect via Wi-Fi.

Every edition of Windows Vista provides the essential tools and technologies to help protect you whether you are browsing the Internet, connecting to a wireless network, or just reading e-mail. • Good value for a personal laptop

    By A7Y04V1QIILMA on 2007-10-22
Good value for the money. I've been using my Sony for 2 weeks and find it fast and reliable for work and home usage. Vista isn't great but it's alright for my needs.

The laptop battery life is quite good with the standard battery. I wish that the recharger cord was a bit longer. Also, when typing on my lap the bottom does get a little warm for my tastes but not too bad.

Overall, this is a good value for a personal laptop. I also considered Dell, Lenovo and Apple, but the Sony had the configuration I wanted for way less than the competition.

  • Love it.

    By A2P664LO9PLRMQ on 2007-11-26
First - I'm not a computer geek. But I am a buyer that demands the best. This computer has been perfect.

    Good things:
    - People asked be where I got it when I had to remove in the security line at the airport. Anything that gets me attention from others is a major plus. It looks great.

    - It goes fast. Now I see why people enjoy YouTube! This thing moves fast, and setting up the wireless utility with my router was as easy as remembering to move over the wireless switch (which was very hard for me.)

    - Poof! It's as light as a feather. When I first grabbed the box with the computer in it from the nerdy Best Buy dude, I thought he forgot to put the computer in. It's light. Very, very light.

    Bad things:
    - Vista. Why? I liked XP sooo much!

    - Doesn't come with hardly any software. Doesn't come with Office or any anti-virus. If it does, that dude at Best Buy totally lied to me!

    - Isn't a flying car. Seriously, it's hard to think of anything wrong with this fine piece of work except that it doesn't take me to work in less than three minutes. I highly recommend it.

  • Worth the bucks!!!

    By A20BIS2KIHGF1P on 2007-11-30
This laptop is really worth the money!!! I was really confused whether to buy a SONY or a HP; HP was $300 cheaper..still I went for a SONY and I think I have made the right choice...
Pros : Looks, Weight, Soft keypad, good performance.
Cons : Comes loaded with very few softwares or none at all...

I have owned a HP and a TOSHIBA laptop previously and this is the best amongst the three!!! Would recommend.

  • This is so cute, but don't be fooled, It is really a Powerful Beauty!

  • If I Could Marry This Laptop I Would!

    By A2YKJHLUAP5FCE on 2007-12-23
I love this laptop. I spent months agonizing over what laptop to buy and I decided on this one because I wanted a Sony. Having owned this for 2 weeks I can honestly say that it was a great investment and definetly worth the money.
The keypad is a dream to use. Beautiful keys that are perfect to operate. I dont think Vista is that hard to use. Maybe its a personal preference but I havent found any problems with compatibility when it comes to software drivers. I love the way that you can play DVD's without booting the whole system up. The only thing Id say is the sound card coulda been a little louder because when you play DVD's it can play a little low. Eg. Superman Returns played very low.You have to watch it with no background sounds. Thats a small gripe. I think had the sound been a little better then I would have given it 5stars ...so I highly recommend this laptop.
The color is beautiful. I love it so much .
I had to add to this review having now owned it for nearly 2 months. The sound is lacking on the Vaio...but if you get headphones you will be fine. I havent had the battery rattling problem at all. The laptop does get a little hot if you leave it on as I do but other than that.My review stays.

  • So Far So Good
    By A123DKDKG4XIRZ on 2008-01-10
Seems pretty solid. A couple points from other reviews. Yes the battery does rattle a small amount, however I was able to fix it by placing a small strip of tape on the side of the battery to take up the tiny amount of slack so that the battery now fits snugly.
It does come with a slew of software from Sony's "business partners", but you can uninstall it to speed up the machine and free up drive space. Also turning off Vista's eye-candy (Aero, desktop sidebar, etc.) will net better performance. This model does not come with recovery disks so make sure you make your backup disks (to blank DVD's) with the included software. After you do that you have the option to wipe the recovery partition and use the space as you see fit (you will be able to reinstall using the recovery disks you created). Battery life at the defaults is okay (2 hours non heavy duty use), but you can double it by getting into Vista's power management and changing the default max for cpu usuage while on battery to less than 100%. One note, while the specs say it can take 4GB of memory (comes with 2GB) , if you are using the 32bit version of Vista, you will be limited to 3GB of memory (this is true of all Vista/XP computers as it is an operating system based limitation, so don't blame Sony).

  • Battery pack does not fit snuggly, it rattles - read on --
    By AQ8Y8OSQA6HWV on 2008-01-03
As beautiful as this laptop looks now I cannot bear to imagine how it will look once the two tiny pieces of plastic that keep the battery pack in place snap off. And they are very flimsey pieces of plastic at that so it will not take long. When this happens the only way to hold the battery in place will be with electrical tape -- and won't this notebook PC look lovely then? How could Sony let a design flaw like this come onto the marketplace? Because of this flaw the battery does not fit snuggly and rattles at times, especially when surfing the Internet in bed - type, rattle, type, rattle. It makes me sick to give up this beautiful notebook but I'm returning it for another laptop - either a Dell or an HP. Also, this laptop is made in China, not Japan.

  • Vista op sys is a complete mess
    By A3GNV6SFW438FO on 2007-12-08
I bought the sony nov. 28 and it's been all downhill operating Vista. It will "follow" you and use little pop ups to ask you inane repetative questions.
No longer able to access paypal, so no more bidding on ebay. Vista has deemed Paypal unsafe. Can not open webb sites off my email because of vista's "protection". Everyday I step into a Vista newily created messes. I can't even work the spellcheck.
The laptop itself is beatiful..Especially for home use it will continue to bury the old time home computer system. But I can't get around the Vista op system, it is terrible and it hurts this laptop's performance..It is impossible for me to seperate the hardware from the messed up Vista...sorry
Thank god I kept my old sony laptop because this ones going to be thrown out the vista window.

  • Almost perfect!
    By A3IBRHFQE2ICOP on 2008-01-18
This is my first Sony, so I am going to compare with many other brands that I had before: Toshiba,Gateway , HP and Dell. My decision about getting a SONY and not a second Dell ( the best one ) was made just based on cosmetics. This laptop looks gourgeous! But it is also a great laptop.
Thumbs UP: Very quiet , good configuration , the built in camera is excelent.
Why not 5 stars: Sound is terrible and lack of bluetooth.

  • Good Specs, decent quality, very pretty!
    By A33QI1H826KYM on 2008-01-30
I bought this laptop for my sister after purchasing a new Lenovo. The lenovo was about $750 more with similar (slightly superior) specs but i feel for the most part it has a much better build quality. The plastic-y feel of the Vaio is a little cheap feeling, and the clicker is very rigid. Even with similar specs, its not as fast as the lenovo, and comes with a lot of "bloat ware" (difficult to remove AOL trails, etc)
It is very pretty and has no problems in terms of usage (the lenovo has been a bit of a headache to tell the truth).

Overall I'd say this is a solid deal for a student or light computer user, just remember that microsoft office is around $200!

  • The pink suckered me in...
    By A2ZAPCN0CUI1WY on 2008-02-18
This was an impulse purchase, I spent my government refund check early. I didn't pay even half what is listed here, cause this model has been updated and mine was on clearance at Best Buy or I'd never had purchased it.

That said, my biggest complaint is the screen flicker when you scroll up and down the page. At first, I thought there was something wrong with the video card, and had an on-line chat with Sony tech support in India (funny how you can tell that even in writing) who just wanted me to reinstall the video drivers. That didn't work. I took it back to Best Buy and they said there wasn't anything wrong with it, that Windows Vista was the reason the screen flickers, and the rest of the new laptops did the same thing. He showed me a brand new Toshiba and darn if it didn't flicker too when scrolling. So I took it back home, but it really is annoying.

I'm not impressed with Vista so far, this laptop has the Home Premium. I haven't seen it do anything spectular, unless I'm missing something. Oh, back to the laptop. I do like feel of the keyboard, even if the letters are not lasered onto the keys, they are just some sort of stickers. It does take a really long time to power up though.

I've always owned Dells, and they come with scads of software on CDs. This Sony came with zero, zilch, nada. Not even a Vista reinstall CD. I didn't realize that at the time I bought it.

All in all, it's just a laptop, but it sure is pretty...

  • Don't by it if you type a lot
    By AULVNPRT3SIW7 on 2008-02-29
I have to say that I was really impressed with this computer when I just got it, because it looks absolutely beutiful (I have a gold one) I hopes long ago that there will be more choice in design and here it was, very light, just beautiful!
There is one main problem. I work typing a lot of text, transcribing. There is some charge that is going through the metal part of a laptop, right in front where the player bottons are, that doesn't quiet burn my skin, but discharging some electricity in to my wrist and it's quiet painful by the end of the day!
I love everything about it, but just for that little thing I would return it, if I did not live in Europe and spent so much money on getting it here from US. So now I just have to wear long sleaves or put some scarf over the metal bar in front, quiet annoying.

  • Usefull

I've bought this laptop to my brother and He's quite happy with it. He says it's quick, powerful and it also has a good looking.

  • Good Laptop
    By A1DZSU4LVOK2EP on 2007-12-03
Good laptop, so, the BATERY is not good. Its charged for a short time. The capacity batery is short. The case is cool. The color is good. I recomend buy the bag too. The vaio have a good web cam. the design is the best. Excellent delivery service. I recomend them.

  • Dissapointed
    By AN2AFRCXBLGXD on 2008-01-07
    Very disappointed that:
    It is not bluetooth compatible.
The speakers are very low level quality.
    Power cord too short.
    Battery life average.
    Made in China.

Should have spent more but I did fall in love with the look!

  • Very good product
    By A1I2VQBXGGVRMC on 2008-01-08
The VAIO is great, it has an excelent resolution and it's relatively fast. The reason why I didn't rate it as a 5 is because it takes too long to charge and the battery duration is less than I expected. I am looking forward to buy a battery extension...

  • Perfect looks, great power, but not the best out there
    By A1RFINGPQJGIAT on 2008-02-17
I bought this laptop months ago, and i can't deny that it's looks made me buy it instead of a Dell or an HP, despite all the bad things i had heard about the Vaio series.I bought it from Amazon, and it came just as they advertised (time and condition of the product).
I really like this laptop, but it is not the best out there.

    The good:
1- Very fast processor. I'm using kaspersky internet security 7 and it doesn't slow down the sistem. The RAM is fair.
2- The integrated webcam is quite cool
3- Very light and elegant design

    The bad:
1- This laptop is supossed to have 200Gb of Hard drive, yet you can only use 178. Why?. Also, this hard drive is slow (4.2 RPM).
2- No bluetooth (almost all laptops today come with bluetooth)
    3- Bad sound
4- The battey has such a short life! and the cord is too short (i don't understand why)

It's a good laptop with some absurd flaws. Sony Vaio series has convinced most buyers(me, for example)that they give more importance to looks than to technology or functional aspects. I hope i won't ever have to experience all those problems other Vaio owners claim to have (battery break, motherboard catastrophes, etc...).

  • Best Laptop Ever!!!!!
    By A1NIZTXJI170F4 on 2008-02-26
I got this because I had a Dell laptop for the past 5-years, and both hinges on it were broken. I literally had to prop it up on pillows for it to even work. So, this was ordered as a replacement. Sad to say, I picked this because it was pink.

As far as functionality goes, this is PERFECT! The screen is crisp and clear. The keyboard is easy to maneuver, and visually attractive since it is a brushed chrome. Vista takes some getting used too, but it is easily figured out in a day. It is flawless on sites like youtube, it just streams video media beautifully, and works well with downloading and the internet in general.

The laptop itself is light as a feather! Compared to my Dell dinosaur, it feels like it weighs nothing. I am sorry, I didn't get this sooner, I love it, and would recommend this to anyone.

  • Worst Computer Ever.
    By A2NYL7C9CK8VN6 on 2008-05-06
I have owned this computer for less than 6 months and in the past 6 months three things have broken. First the left click broke, I sent the computer into Sony and they replaced it. A few months later my computer turned off and would not power on. I sent the computer to Sony and they replaced my motherboard. A week after receiving the computer back my screen started to malfunction. There was a dotted line that would appear and blink then go away for a few seconds only to return again. I called up Sony support and as I was on the phone with them my screen began to fade completely to white then flash back to normal than fade to white again. Now I have sent it back to them again for another repair. Two major repairs in less than 6 months is ridiculous.

  • It's perfect
    By A39W2OONK3KPP8 on 2008-01-13
This laptop is perfect. Lightweight, good to look at and easy to use. Love the action of the keys and that the mouse pad is lower on the keyboard so you don't touch it by mistake.

  • Great combination of style and technology!
    By A2SVRTVN7JXV0P on 2008-01-19
This is my 6th laptop in 5 years and it is by far the best one in terms of performance and design. In addition to its powerful processor and RAM, I'm sure you'll enjoy its sleek blue case and all-silver keyboard. The battery life is far better than on an HP. If you want to work in style, Vaios won't disappoint you.

  • Sony VAIO VGN-CR220E Series
    By A2F2UYH9JGCNF1 on 2008-02-05
I am sort of a computer geek and like changing products from time to time. I ordered this notebook after using the VGN-FZ140E Series for almost 5 months. I would not have replaced the VGN-FZ140E for a while until I cracked the screen and it costs 700$ to fix. This laptop was a nightmare from the first day. When I turned it on for the first time it gave me installation errors and after spending 20 minutes on the phone with the Sony Customer Service I managed to fix it. The installation process takes hours since the computer comes overloaded with a lot of crap that I don't even want. Typical with any Sony VAIO product I have to spend hours uninstalling all that unwanted software.

After a week of normal (student) use the computer started giving me the blue screen which was really frustrating. I nearly cried when it turned blue after I lost hours worth of work on a school paper. The second problem with this machine is its keyboard response time. If you were to type a letter twice, you won't get the second letter registered from time to time. The backspace button was extremely sluggish and didn't delete letters easily, even though I had set the keyboard configurations in control panel.

Some other problems with the laptop is obviously the finger prints that you are going to leave by merely touching it on the led and it's pretty noisy as well. I have to admit that I have been a very loyal Sony customer for a long time but this machine really made me go for something else and try something new. With all this problems the laptop had to be returned and I did so. Thanks to Amazon for a quick refund which is truly appreciated :) I got a 13.3" Toshiba Satellite U305-S7467

  • Bloatware
    By A1JIN7Y2WV000U on 2008-05-04
Contains unnecessary software, or bloatware, that slows up startup and consumes memory. "Spy Sweeper" is the most annoying.

  • Buy a Mac
    By A3CJ2H3NZWRI6O on 2008-10-30
We bought this sony with high hopes but were quickly disappointed. I don't understand why all Microsoft software is such garbage. Just one example. My daughter and I went to watch a DVD last night (enemy of the state) and the video comes up with a 2 inch wide black box all the way around it in full screen mode. We searched all the preferences and quickly found that we could set the movie to play at 1.4X the normal speed THIS IS HANDY!! The 7 band graphic equalizer was also easy to find, great feature on a laptop that has microscopic speakers that barely put out enough sound to drown out the background noise in an empty library at 2 am... but no where did we find a video zoom or aspect adjustment. My $100 nortech DVD player has these features as does the free software included with every Mac, but not Windows Media Player. Maybe there is another DVD player included? If so we couldn't find it so what good is it... we had to watch the movie in this tiny screen size. This seems to be the recurring theme every time we go to use this computer for ANYTHING.. we waste a half hour learning that it is incapable of the simplest functions and either abandon the effort or put up with some form of torturous inadequacy. (BUY A MAC)

As for the Sony itself.. who knows, it seems slow, unresponsive, generally useless... but I work on a MacBook every day so maybe my expectations are too high. The Sony would probably be a great machine if it wasn't loaded with garbage for software. If your planning to uninstall Vista and all the associated garbage and load Linux or some other real operating system you might be alright, but why not just BUY A MAC?

Le regalé a mi hija una VAIO y quedó encantada.
La configuración de procesador, memoria y capacidad del disco duro es excelente por el precio.

  • Fantastic Unit!
    By A3IB1KF7QGAH5N on 2008-02-06
This is one of the best laptops available. It's so easy to use & very fast. My only issue is with Vista. I HATE Vista. Other than that, I would definitely recommend this unit. Check out Best Buy before purchasing anywhere else. I got mine for only $806.00 just about 2 weeks ago.

  • Great Product with minor flows
    By A113JEAF1WJKI on 2008-02-08
I bought this Notebook for my wife as a gift. This product is great. Looks Great, Performs Great but the only downside is that it lacks bluetooth. Thats weired for a Sony Notebook these days. Otherwise, my wife says its fast, reliable, durable and has stunning looks.
The lack of a shortcut button to start the browser as well as a forward and back button is a minus imho . Adding these would be a welcome addition.
Still another great product from the ever reliable Sony Corp.

  • A great product that has been spoilt
    By A1XOSMVWA7HETK on 2008-02-14
This computer is a great product. The screen is highly illuminated and attractive. The skin is a beautiful glossy red. But the software is loaded with so much junk that you really have to compete to get things done. That's crazy.
