An online Electronic Program Guide (EPG) lets you review the TV schedule and select individual episodes or entire series, so you can watch your favorite shows on your own time, at your own convenience. And you can easily burn TV shows and home video to DVD for friends and family with the dual-layer, multi-format LightScribe DVD/CD burner (16x for DVD±R), which enables you to store up to 8.5 GB of data on a DL disc. LightScribe technology burns custom, silkscreen-quality labels and artwork directly onto LightScribe-enabled discs, right inside the drive. Built-in drive bays fit optional HP Personal Media Drives and Pocket Media Drives, for up to 660 GB of additional storage that you can carry away with you when you go (media drives not included). In addition to easily playing your DVD movies and managing your digital audio library, you'll be able to record and watch your favorite TV shows (even HDTV). Vista also integrates new search tools throughout the operating system, includes new parental control features, and offers new tools that can warn you of impending hardware failures. The Basics - Processor: With four execution cores, the 2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Quad Processor Q6600 blows through processor-intensive tasks in demanding multitasking environments and makes the most of highly threaded applications. Whether you're creating multimedia, annihilating your gaming enemies, or running compute-intensive applications at one time, new quad-core processing will change the way you do everything. The Q6600 has a top-of-the-class 1066 MHz front-side bus (FSB) and dual 4 MB L2 caches (for a whopping huge 8 MB shared L2 cache). (An L2, or secondary, cache temporarily stores data; and a larger L2 cache can help speed up your system's performance. The FSB carries data between the CPU and RAM, and a faster front-side bus will deliver better overall performance.)
With four complete execution cores in a single processor, you get four dedicated, physical threads help operating systems and applications deliver additional performance that enhance multi-tasking and multi-threaded performance across many types of applications and work loads. The Smart Memory Access feature improves system performance by hiding memory latency, thus optimizing the use of available computer data bandwidth to provide data to the processor when and where it is needed. The Advanced Digital Media Boost feature effectively doubles the execution speed for instructions used widely in multimedia and graphics applications. And with the Intel 64 Architecture, the processor can access larger amounts of memory. With appropriate 64-bit hardware and software, platforms based on an Intel processor supporting Intel 64 Architecture can allow the use of extended virtual and physical memory. This processor also includes Intel's Viiv technology, which allows you to quickly turn the PC on and off (after initial boot) with a touch of the included remote thanks to Intel's Quick Resume function. It also offers specially-designed software that makes network configuration easy, for connecting to portable media players, DVD players, TV sets and stereos. - Hard Drive: The incredibly huge 640 GB capacity from the dual 320 GB Serial ATA (SATA) hard drives (7200 RPM) offers a wealth of storage space--enough for storing up to 395 hours of television programming, a vast multimedia collection, or for editing digital video. This SATA hard drive also quickens the pace with a higher speed transfer of data--akin to FireWire and USB 2.0.
- Memory: The 3 GB of installed RAM (PC5300, 2 x 1 GB, 2 x 512 MB) is a good start, but you'll want to add more RAM to handle today's demanding multimedia and gaming software. It also offers a top-of-class 667 MHz speed. This desktop has an enormous 8 GB maximum RAM capacity (4 x 2 GB). To receive the faster data transfer benefits of the dual-channel DDR2 RAM, any RAM additions require memory modules of same capacity and clockspeed.
- DVD/CD Drive: This multiformat DVD/CD drive is compatible with writing both DVD+ and DVD- disc formats as well as dual-layer (DL) DVD+/-R discs, which can store up to 8.5 GB of data. It features 8x DVD-R DL Write Once, 8x DVD+R DL Write Once, 16x DVD+R, 8x DVD+RW, 16x DVD-R, 6x DVD-RW, 12x DVD-RAM, 40x CD-R, 32x CD-RW write speeds and 40x CD-ROM, and 16x DVD-ROM read speeds.
This LightScribe DVD+/-RW drive lets you laser-etch silkscreen quality text and images on to CDs and DVDs . Your software, PC and discs work together for a no-hassle way to burn just the labels you want. After you burn content, just flip the disc over, reinsert and burn your label--anything from a simple title to a full-disc work of art. - Keyboard & Mouse: This desktop comes with a wireless HP keyboard with extended range (up to 30 feet) and a wireless optical mouse.
Video & Audio Video is powered by the integrated NVidia GeForce 8400 GS graphics/video card with 256 MB of dedicated graphics memory. Windows Vista can also allocate up to 1535 MB of total graphics memory from the system memory. With support for Microsoft DirectX 10 Shader Model 4.0 and High Dynamic-Range Lighting (HDR), it lets you rip through all of today's most advanced and cutting-edge games and applications. Power through games at record speeds with vividly realistic, sun-up to sun-down HDR lighting effects, and crank up 16x full-screen anti-aliasing without missing a beat. The fully unified shader core dynamically allocates processing power to geometry, vertex, physics, or pixel shading operations, delivering up to 2x the gaming performance of prior generation GPUs. The video card includes composite TV out, DVI video out and HDMI audio/video out options. This PC also offers an integrated audio card that can produce high definition surround sound configurable to 8 speakers. Networking, Connectivity & Expansion This desktop can be wirelessly networked with the integrated 54g Wi-Fi LAN (802.11b/g). You also get super-fast wired connectivity via the Gigabit Ethernet port (10/100/1000). For expansion, it includes drive bays that fit an optional HP Personal Media Drive (for adding 500 GB of storage) or an optional HP Pocket Media Drive (for adding 160 GB of storage)--for a total of up to 660 GB of extra storage. A Powerful Upgrade By A1FEIHN6ALW1L on 2007-10-15
I purchased the HP m9040n from a big box retailer. It has worked well from the time it came out of the box. I was previously working on an older Presario desktop with a single processor. That computer couldn't handle the task of editing HD Video. This new unit made it possible for me to edit native HD video (Sony AVCHD format on Studio 11 software). The HD editing had fewer crashes on the m9040n than the older Presario had editing SD video. The HD editing playback is a little herky jerky still, and I was hoping that upgrading the RAM from the standard 3MB out of the box to 6 MB would help, but upon the suggestion comment below, I'll be happy with what I have.
Playback of the HD video downloaded from my Sony HDV camcorder using Sony's HD video player is smoother than playback during editing. Again, for comparison, on the older Presario (with a 2.4ghz single processor and 1.5mb of RAM) playing HD video on Sony's player was a worse herky jerky playback experience than playing HD during video editing on the m9040n.
The graphics card comes with an HDMI output. I'm hoping to purchase a long enough HDMI cable to connect the computer to my living room TV set. The m9040n comes with a media content infrared remote. This should allow me to playback my HD content on the computer on my large screen TV without having to get a HD DVD until the format war has a winner.
Overall, I'm pleased with the system, especially for the price.
Update:
I edited 45 minutes of HD native AVCHD files down to 20 minutes using Pinnacle Studio 11 Ultimate software. I don't have an HD DVD drive, so I rendered that project onto the Pavilion as an MPEG4 Full HD file for playback. The installed Vista Media Center does not recognize that MPEG video, but the Windows Media Player does play the file after it quickly went online and updated its codec. That Full HD file plays flawlessly from my hard disk without any hesitations or degradation of its HD image on my Samsung 22 widescreen monitor.
The time to render 20 minutes of HD edited material was about 35 minutes. This HD rendering was faster on the Pavilion than the SD rendering using the same software took on the Presario.
Update #2:
The NVidia graphics card HDMI output works great for using your HDMI ready HDTV as the monitor. This will allow you to play HD video on your widescreen TV if this is what you plan to upgrade for
Great PC - OS needs work though By A3GJPDA1X3C9JI on 2007-11-20
I got this computer about two weeks ago. This baby is lightning fast. How good is it, you wonder? Windows Vista has a utility built-in that ranks the hardware its running on. The scale is 1 to 5, 5 being the most optimum hardware for the operating system. This one scored higher than a 5! I have compared this computer's configurations to Dell and Gateway, both costing atleast $400 more for a similar product.
The only drawback so far appears to be the TV-out feature. It does not work! Problems with TV-out are common place with the Vista O/S. There's postings all over the Internet about NVidia having this problem on the Vista O/S. Hopefully they'll fix it soon. For now, if you absolutely need TV-out, stick to XP or get another machine that doesn't have NVidia.
Dead on arrival By A39RYTM5FN8OY2 on 2007-10-10
Got the m9080n yesterday, unboxed it, hooked all cables, switched it on and....nothing! Just a very loud noise coming from the unit, like something very bad was happening. No signal to the monitor. Called HP and was told they would send me a new power supply. Give me a break ! I am not a handyman and don't want to open the PC.They suggested I could take it to a CompUSA for repair, under warranty of course. I did it and now I'm waiting to see if it can be fixed quickly or will return it. Where is HP quality control ? At least they should make sure it boots. Frustrating and annoying.
When and if I get a working machine I will post a decent review, hopefully giving it a 5 stars.
Update: Can't be fixed without new part. Just returned it for a replacement.
Update-2 Got the new machine from Amazon. Installation went well with the exception of no audio from the Realtek soundcard. After few hours installing new drivers and changing settings, the audio came. Not a HP fault, just this dreadful buggy Vista. Overall, everything is fine now.
5 stars to Amazon. Shipping was reinbursed and new machine came in 2 days air. Great service !
We don't need all that power By A35NSFT3SK1G4X on 2007-10-22
I have had my m9040n PC for a while now and it is a Great all around PC, It's my 3rd HP. at first I Hated Vista, MS loves bugs on a new OS, I even took Vista off and installed XP PRO. That was a lot of work but with HPs help finding the necessary XP drivers we did it. I was having issues with some Games not working with Vista, and I knew that they worked with XP. I lost a lot of software and hardware (the remote) when I switched to XP, so I have reinstalled the HP software and Windows Vista, NOTE: HP doesn't recommend changing your OS and are not responsible if you PC doesn't act right when you do. MS is releasing a 1GB Vista patch in January to fix a lot of Vista issues. The only down sides with the PC is 1) the 300 watt power supply, If you want to upgrade to a nvidia 8800 graphics card you need to upgrade the power supply to around 600 watts, 450 min. however it comes with a nvidia 8400 gs/256mb card, which is a good budget card, remember the 8800s are the top of the line (this month) and 2) HP installed PC2-5300 @667mhz memory, the motherboard can handle up to PC-6400 @800mhz. But if you're not a power gamer this PC has everything you could ever want from a PC. SPEED. It even has some of the same things that the high-end gaming pcs have, and you can't build one that has everything this one has for this price. The good thing is you can still up grade the m9040n later when things get really fast. Hoped this helped.
Excellent Computer, Lousy Documentation By A7OXEKTYPL934 on 2007-12-07
HP Pavilion M9040N Elite Desktop PC (Intel Core 2 Quad Processor Q6600, 3 GB RAM, 640 GB Hard Drive, Vista Premium)
This is a good computer and configured with quality components. I've now owned this for about two months. I have spent untold hours getting this setup to be used as a Media Center with a Direct TV Satellite Receiver and a Sony Bravia HD TV. And then had a Video card failure to agravate things further. HP's documentation and on-line chat support is totally incomplete and horrendous. I have owned PC's since the mid 70's and this is the worst documented computer I have ever owned. HP should be ashamed of themselves. Windows Vista operating software relative to the Media Center is "Shaky" at best. Be prepared for hours of work and many frustrations trying to use this as a Media Center setup. However, I now have it all working. Finally.....
- M9040N Non-functional-Bad technical support-Buyer beware
     By A32LYVJE8GTFCN on 2008-01-20
Purchased HP M9040N end of November 2007. Computer crashes frequently. On start-up computer asks for reboot and select proper boot device. When inserting recovery disks, get error message that HD cannot be found. HP support only wants to reinstall original OS and software which has been done twice. HP will not replace PC. Does not stand behind product. Service support provided in India and Argentina is pathetic and hardly worth the call unless you just want to explain the problem over and over and over again and only to be thanked for purchasing HP (which I will not do again). Spend your money and take your chances. Next computer will be a Dell or Sony or any other brand. - Lousy Quality Control
     By A1CA4BNV33RP45 on 2007-12-19
I bought my HP m9040n in early November with the intent of using it for a lot of video and photo editing. I also wanted to take advantage of its DVR capabilities once I figured out how to link wirelessly with my home theater. Unfortunately, I really haven't had a chance to put it to the test because in the first month, I needed to return it twice to HP for repair. The first time involved a noisy power supply fan (it sounded like something rubbing against the fan blades). Upon it's return from HP, I then learned that the USB connectors on the front panel did not work. This time HP techs replaced the front USB receiver and the CPU!
Call me a glutton for punishment but I still own this computer, and (fingers crossed) have not experienced additional problems for the last two weeks. At this point, my only other observation is that I am mildly disappointed in the speed with which programs open and run. I really don't see that much improvement over my 5 year old Pentium 4. Admittedly, though, I lack the computer savvy to know whether the problem lies with HP, Vista, my satellite "high speed" service, or AOL.
On the positive side I would be remiss if I didn't acknowledge HP's tech support operation. Whenever I called, I quickly reached customer support and the techs tried their best to help. Returning my computer to HP for repair was also relatively painless. Turnaround time was about one and half weeks each incident.
If I knew then what I know now, I probably would not buy this computer. Tough to say, though, whether I ended up with the one bad apple or this is a more widespread problem. Good luck.
- HP is a huge disappointment
     By A254YOEDRG7DIN on 2008-01-02
I was very disappointed with my computer and the service. I was told that if I paid extra for "premium" service or new premium software the computer would work as promised.
Many of the multimedia functions the computer advertises either do not work or require advanced knowledge for which users have to pay a hefty fee (HP tech support refuses to help). For example, I paid extra for the premium version of the Roxio software. The premium version does not come close to doing everything I expected. If I really want the software to work I will have to pay extra.
In addition HP's tech support is truly pathetic. I have called twice. Before I can even finish describing the problem the technical support person instructed me to reinstall the operating system. No diagnosis. No try this, then try that. Just reinstall the operating system. I could get technical support like that from my computer illiterate grandmother.
When HP says they are going to stand behind their product I expect technical support to be more knowledgable and insightful than simply to say reinstall the operating system.
I eventually figured out how to solve the problems on my own. Now I know that calling technical support is just a waste of time. I will not bother with it in the future. I would advise against paying extra for extended years of so-called "technical support".
- Great PC !
     By AHNWIL8N0I2NS on 2007-11-10
Just got the M9040n and so far so good. I added a set of Logitech speakers and work very nice with the integrated 7.1 card.
The Q6600 QUAD processor gives a great speed and the Nvidia card performs a very nice video in my HP display.
I recommend this product.
- Great Hardware and poor OS
     By A2YM0Z3WXJ936T on 2008-01-31
The m99040n runs now for about eight weeks. Speed is faster than my old AMD 1600 XP. But not as fast as you would expect from the Q6600 vs. AMD 1600 XP. Everything works well.
The TV media portion shows very low picture quality even if set to "best" in Media Center (reception from welfare TV over the air)at 1900x1200(1080). DVR works as good as the TV. Sound quality is very good. The quiet system allows watching classical music.
The HP wireless mouse was a bit undersized for this very good system and you should really think about a better one. Tastatur is fine.
Video 8400/256MB card can handle media player movies, DVD and pictures easily at 1900x1200 resolution. Remote is not really quick - be patient and it will do what you want.
Vista has is asking just too many annoying question about programs running. It would be good if you could tell Vista what program you want to allow to run once. Many programs under XP won't run well on Vista - Do you really want to buy all programs you own again realizing later that Vista is just the buggiest thing ever put on the market?
Vista is shutting down programs if they do not respond - big problem if Vista can't wait. You should have at least the joice to keep it running. This way it goes and on. Error messages are not specific. Vista is not what I want. In case you are happy with the programs on this system you may be fine with Vista. Don't assume that your old known XP stuff work as good as under XP. May be the next Service Pack is addressing some of it.
The same system under XP would have been a very nice 5 star system.
- Great Functional Computer
     By A27X7S5EZQDGA8 on 2008-01-12
I have spent my entire adult life building computers. I always wanted the fastest, most functional computer I could get. Tired of doing this I decided to buy a pre-built computer. I bought the m9040n. I have had it for about 3 months and really like it. I really like the personal media bay in the front. I bought 2 750 GB personal media drives and back the machine up to those. Works great.
- Great Machine . . . but no RAID Capability
     By A2370SH3747NI8 on 2008-01-09
After three weeks working with HP's Total Care service group, it was finally concluded, after many decision reversals, that this product is not RAID Ready capable. Total Care has suggested looking at the m9040n, which does have RAID capability. Also look at the customizable HP m9000t and m9000z models which are said to be RAID capable.
Hopefully, I have cleared up a confusing area. The machine itself is extremely well designed . . . a thing of beauty. All in all, I was sad to have to return this beautiful machine!
- A nice machine if you can put up with the noise
     By A31SQEQ4WJOLLK on 2008-03-02
Going into the third month of ownership the tower developed a loud hum that changes in volume, almost like a transformer, but a little higher than a 60 cycle hum. I opened it up, stopped all three fans that I could get to and they are not the culprit. Seems to be from the power supply. I thought for sure it was a fan. But it doesn't seem to be the two in the back or the processor fan. I have maybe 15 - 20 basic applications installed that run just fine on xp. BSOD at least 2 times a day and it didn't want to power down 2 out of 3 times, just hanged up on the shut down cycle. So far Registry Mechanic seems to have fixed that. Other than those issues, I'm happy with this machine.
Edit.. The noise was found to be originating from the NVIDIA GeForce 8400 GS processor fan. They are sent a replacement, support was helpful. The BSOD may be caused by a conflict with zonealarm. An Intel PRO/1000 Gigabit Adapter update was reported by windows to resolve the issue.
- GREAT!
     By A2ADZHA04WH6JC on 2008-01-14
It arrived on time, and is working great. Hardly makes any sound (unlike my old PC). If i'd HAVE to criticize ONE thing it would be Vista. But you can always install XP on another drive. (which is NOT as easy as one would think. Have to search a little bit online first)
Other than that, GREAT product. i LOVE it.
- I think it is a very good system, but 2 questions remain ...
     By A2X8EFJV3JEB1S on 2007-12-14
A friend of mine recently bought this system and I played around with it for a few minutes. Great components! I am really interested. However, I'm still not sure if the 2 harddrives of this system are configured in RAID mode (RAID 0 or RAID 1 -- and I would prefer RAID 0). Anyone knows?
Another question I have is anyone installed Vista 64-bit on this system? The motherboard, processor and RAM memory will support 64-bit OS, but I wonder if it runs smoothly? If if someone installed the Vista 64-bit, did you have lots of problems finding drivers? HP web site offers only a few specific 64-bit drivers.
- Awsome Computer , Powerful, Fast and Strong
     By A2UQZNTPAERITY on 2008-04-25
For a computer not being built by yourself this is a great computer. I added a LG Blu-ray/HD Writer for $300 and It is now a real TV computer. HP has built a good one here,Rates a 5.6 on Vista scale. And Vista is doing it's job, When It came out there was some issues, SP1 is out and Vista Ultimate is very Good !! I also love Media Center with the Built in HD Tuner, It records Flawlessly in HD and has a great picture. I highly recomend this computer.
- Same computer as the HP m9150f?
     By A1WJC277RJ23X7 on 2008-05-13
I'm confused as to what the difference is to this HP model, compared to the m9150f. They both have practically identical specifications except for the hard drive space(m9040n=640gb, m9150f=720gb) and the m9150f carries a HD-DVD player, and somehow the m9040n is priced substantially higher. I might have overlooked something when comparing the specs but I can't find the difference. Does anyone know?
- RAID is possible yes
     By A377KA3DAIFX5F on 2008-06-03
I've read all these responses on M9080N and will it do RAID... the simple answer is yes it will. Here's how.
CAUTION: This will destroy all of your data!!
1. Create system recovery DVDs from Start Menu > Programs > PC Help & Tools > Recovery Disc Creation (you can only do this once per system)
2. Go into the BIOS, find disk settings. HP ship this machine in IDE config, There are 2 more choices there AHCI and RAID. Choose RAID, save and reboot.
3. Hit "Ctrl I" upon boot to enter RAID config
4. Create 1 TB RAID 0 (stripe) or 500 GB RAID 1 (mirror) logical volume.
5. Insert DVD and boot
6. Follow prompts to rebuild system
7. All done
HP seem to not done a perfect job both configuring this system (shipping with BIOS set to IDE) as well as supporting this system (telling customers it does not support RAID). They need to hire a few more rocket scientists and try harder next time.
- HP m9080n works great--if it works....

I purchased my HP m9080n tower from Fry's in November 2007, and have used it for business purposes. Initially, it performed spectacularly. Great speed, handled many programs running simultaneously, little or no noise from the tower. NOTE: That's the ONLY reason I've given this machine 2 stars, rather than 0 or 1 star. When it's functioning correctly, it's very good. But, as you'll see below, I cannot rely on it--so what's the point in having it?
In February 2008, the problems began. The computer had had about 2 months of use by then. I'd do a cold boot (turned it on), and when the welcome screen appeared--if it did--there was no way for me to log in. The icons for each user account appeared but didn't respond, and they didn't open a space for me to enter my password.
I tried many possible solutions before taking it back to Fry's, including reinstalling Vista 4 times, using PC Doctor to analyze any hardware problems (it found none). Had to start it in Safe Mode to do these tests, or used F11 to get into system restore mode. Bottom line is that nothing fixed the problem, despite my reformatting the hard drive, reinstalling Vista, and not installing anything else on the machine. Even with that configuration, it still had nonresponsive icons and no login window on booting up.
Finally took it to Fry's, because it was under warranty. They replaced the motherboard at no charge. When I brought the PC back to my office, it was fine for a couple of weeks, and then I started seeing the same symptoms as before: no window to log in, and nonresponsiveness to system restoration.
Took it back to Fry's, asked them to fix it AGAIN. This time they charged me nearly $200 to reinstall Vista, which I had already done mutliple times. Brought it back to the office, and it functioned well for about 2 weeks.
Yesterday, the SAME PROBLEM STARTED AGAIN: when I turned the machine on, I got no login screen, and the user account icons were nonresponsive. But get this--I was so disgusted that I just let the thing sit overnight, with the nonfunctional login screen still there. When I got into the office the next morning, clicked on the icon for my administrator's account, lo and behold--the login window was normal. I was able to log in as usual, in other words. And I hadn't touched the computer since it booted up with no login window the night before.
If anyone has suggestions as to what I can do about this, I'm all ears. I can't tell you how disgusted I am with HP AND Frys'. The computer is still under warranty, but I've read other reviews here that give me no hope that HP will resolve the situation to my satisfaction. In the meantime, I've sunk $2,000 into an unreliable machine that no one seems to know how to fix. Right now, it's more useful as a freaking doorstop.
In all fairness, we have several other HP desktops and notebook computers in my office. In the 3+ years we've had them (running XP or Vista Ultimate), we have had no problems with them. I don't know if this problem is specific to the m9080n or not.
Thanks,

I do not wish to review this purchase just yet. I wrote earlier that the item was shipped to my brother in Washington who brought it to me in Canada. I then came back to Jamaica with the item. Somewhere between Washington, Canada and Jamaica we lost the USB receiver for the wireless keyboard and mouse. I am using wired keyboard and mouse for now but would like to know how I can aquire another USB receiver.
I await a response.
Thanks
