  • Western Digital MyBook 1 TB - Great Capacity But Shorter Lived Than Other MyBooks

    By A17BUUBOU0598B on 2008-06-13
The Western Digital My Book Essential 1 TB Hard Drive has great capacity but might not be well suited for this design. I've had great luck with my Western Digital drives, but may have bitten off more than I could chew with this 1 TB model. The bottom line is I now think that 1 TB might be too much capacity for a USB-only connection. Even though it might not be because of the size I did experience a hardware issue with the 1 TB model that had to be repaired. That was the first HD failure I've had with any of these WD external drives.

The larger capacity means that the disk geometry has to work harder for the same form factor. When you consider that neither the speed nor the buffer were improved with this model, it's easier to see why the performance is slightly less than the 500 GB model.

Ultimately I think it might make sense to step down to the Western Digital 500GB My Book Home Edition or the Western Digital My Book Premium 500 GB model instead. If you need 1 TB you might want to look at the Premium, Home, Studio or Professional versions in that capacity. I am nervous because of the negative press some of those have gotten, but the extra and faster interfaces would have to be better than this USB only Essentials version.

For a 1 TB drive, the buffer has to get larger. This guy is still limited by the 480 Mps connection speed of USB 2.0 but gives you only a fraction of that in production.

You can unplug the AC adapter to manually power it down from behind, or it will power down with your computer. The AC adapter helps it perform a little faster than the USB powered ones.

The software utilities should be deleted by anybody but the most novice user. Just do cut and paste backups instead and use some other shareware or NTFS if you need to enable encryption.

Connecting WD drives to different systems has always been a plus, and this drive connected to my Windows XP, Vista or Mac OS X computers.

The only factor that should change whether or not you get this drive or another one would be size and connection type. Obviously, WD makes Pro and other versions of these drives that have firewire and SATA connectors. For most Mac users, firewire 2 connectivity is a must.

I did experience my first drive failure with the 1 TB after only 3 months of use. From now on I'm stepping up to the higher end models for this capacity. Still, I may have just gotten a bad one and you might be luckier.

    Pros
+ Works well on multiple platforms: Windows Vista, XP and Mac OS X
+ Nice 16 MB buffer for faster copying speeds is still acceptable
+ New sleek body, more pleasing to the eye
+ Turns on and off with your computer
+ Very easy installation, virtually plug and play
+ Integrates nicely with my growing stable of WD MyBook drives
+ 1 TB truly is amazing capacity in one drive

    Cons
    - 1 TB capacity is probably the largest you would want for USB transfer with a 16 MB buffer
    - Software will only be useful for novice users and is not very good (after several years of these drives being on the market)
    - New shiny body attracts fingerprints and dust, may not appeal to everyone
    - Transfer speed still limited by USB only connection, must step up for FireWire ports
    - Price for 1 TB of capacity not as good as some smaller drives in $ price per gigabyte
    - AC adapter for power, not USB powered

    Conclusion

This drive is great for those who want a large capacity drive. It's better to get a pair to guard against drive failures and backup your backup. Watch the price and try to get it on sale. Those looking for extra connectors (firewire, SATA) will want to step up to the other models.

    Enjoy!

  • A data center on a shelf

    By A1NGFGBX2VCQS8 on 2008-02-04
It is very hard to argue with the amount of storage that one of these drives offer. If you have been in the industry for awhile, you can remember when a terabyte of data meant an entire data center of storage!

These drives are quite and they format to NTFS quickly as long as you remember to specify quick format!! I have been pleased enough with the drive that I now own 6 of them. My laptop now has 6 terabyte of storage to work with! Since I do a lot of music and video work, that is important to me. Considering the fact that these drives now run about $229 when on sale, why would you not buy one?

Keep in mind that if you connect multiple drives, you will want to use different controlled ports on your computer; not just a USB hub (the reason is each dedicated port of a USB 2.0 can only work at a total of 400 MB/S. That means if you have multiple drives on the same controlled port that they are sharing that speed (this will really show up if you are moving data from one drive to another on the same hub). Remember, having 4 ports on your computer does not mean that they are 4 seperately controlled ports! Check your users manual or call technical support for your product to see how many seperately controlled ports you really have.

I have now moved all of my video, photos, and music to these drives (3 terabyte) and use the other three terabyte as mirrored drives (fail safe)and it is all easily accessable on my computer and on my network through my computer.

I have had the first drive for 5 months now and have added the others as they went on sale. I have not had any boot issues (mentioned in other reviews) and all of the lights go off when the computer is powered down. I am running Vista Ultimate with all updates and I am using an IBM ThinkPad with current BIOS.

    Great drives!!!

  • Sleek and quiet

    By A34930YXVQ8SUT on 2007-10-30
My expectations were beyond met when I plugged this in. It amazes me that a 1tb external HD can be so quiet. I had returned a 1tb older version of Western digital's external HD because it sounded like a jet engine. WD clearly fixed that problem.

The design is sleek and stylish, it is perfectly silent, and it transfers quickly with a 2.0 USB port. I would highly recommend this product.

UPDATE: I've had the product for 7 months now and I still stand by my original review. It has never given me any problems or crashed.

  • warning! please read. bad company policy

    By A29MYCAT2RJG5F on 2008-07-10
I just want to write and let the world know what kind of company this is. I have owned 3 Western digital (WD) hard drives. All 3 have not lasted longer then 2 years, the most recent has only lasted 1 yr.. 4 months. But the kicker of this situation is the external hard drive WD make have a warranty of 1 year. but the internal Hard drives that are inside the units have a 3-5 year warranty. So I called WD because the hard drive inside the case went bad. So this is how the call went.
The phone rang, and I got contacted to someone over sea's and could barely speak english. I told him my problem and he said sorry it's out of warranty and there is nothing he could do. So i said the hard drive inside the unit has a 3 year warranty. he said well you bought the external hard drive so you only get a 1 year warranty. I was going no where with him so I asked to speak to a manager.
Mind you it's bad enough I lost all my info, but now I couldn't get a replacement. so the manager comes on and says there is nothing he can do. I said to him because I buy the complete package the WD makes I get punished. and if i went out and bought a internal hard drive and put it in a case i'd get a 3-5 year warranty? he responded back, yea. I said dont you think this is a little unfair? and he said sorry. So then trying to be slick I said ok so what if I take the Hard drive out will i get the 3-5 year warranty? he said no you'll void the warranty because they marry the case and the hard drive as 1 unit so they know the hard drive came out of it. But his way of solving the situation he said is they offer a service to recover the data, I asked how much does that cost. he said about $3k. I asked to talk to his manager and he sad it would take 48 hours for them to call me back. (still waiting)
Long story short, if you are interested in buying a western digital I recommend buying a internal hard drive and putting it in a case which are very cheap. Just search external hard drive case, and tons will pop up. by doing this you'll get a real warranty.
I hope this helps others from getting screwed. Good luck

  • Does what it should

    By AU24QSWY1IPXM on 2007-12-20
Being USB it's not going to be blazingly fast, but it is pretty fast for USB. MYbook Drives are great because they power themselves on and off, are silent, and don't heat up much.

  • Dead as in kicked the bucket, bereft of life, expired
    By A20SQ8MMZL3G0V on 2008-06-19
The thing still spins, but the files are corrupt, the tests are not passing, my entire DVD collection is gone. I've no idea what happened.

The thing is under the warranty so will be going back to Texas tomorrow, I don't think they recover the data though, from what I understand they simply send you the replacement, as if it is going to do any good re: my DVD collection that is now gone.

    ---

    07/14/08 Update:

The replacement drive has arrived and it seems to be working ok. I found another issue which is more of Microsoft limitation, not Western Digital. The drive comes formatted in FAT32 format and per Microsoft this format does not support files larger than 4Gb, to quote their technical support "You cannot create a file larger than (2^32)-1 bytes (this is one byte less than 4 GB) on a FAT32 partition."

As most DVDs routinely exceed 4Gb limitation there are 2 possible options: a) to reformat the drive into into NTFS partition or b)files will need to be split into smaller chunks.

Both are not very appealing, because reformatting into NTFS means losing compatibility with external DVD players and splitting the DVDs means changing the original media.

  • Quiet and Fast but bundled software is 30 Day trial only
    By A2S549B4743R0S on 2008-02-19
I bought one of these a month ago at Costco for about $200 after a coupon. I bought it on the spot with little to no research trusting that if I didn't like it, I could return it. So far that hasn't been necessary since the drive has met and exceeded my expectations after a few gremlins plagued the initial installation.

This is the 3rd WD HDD I've purchased. Historically, I've had problems with faulty WD products, particularly the 160GB portal HDD which I had to return twice because of bad sectors. I did not feel confident that this product would be any less troublesome and it seemed I was correct during installation. It refused to recognize the Desktop it was attached to, restarting everything always turned up different results. Sometimes I could get the devices to see each other only for them to lose the connection a few minutes later, other times I had no luck whatsoever. Finally, after approximately 20 attempts, the HD started working. I was about to return the device right before my last try. I tried this on several PCs with both USB and Firewire connectors and the same results so I'm convinced the HDD was at fault.

The drive is very quiet, more so than my internal HDD. I have it connected via Firewire, which is the fastest conventional external connection.

    READ TEST:

    * 5000 files (300 MB total) FireWire was 33% faster than USB 2.0
    * 160 files (650MB total) FireWire was 70% faster than USB 2.0

    WRITE TEST:

    * 5000 files (300 MB total) FireWire was 16% faster than USB 2.0
    * 160 files (650MB total) FireWire was 48% faster than USB 2.0

There is an eSATA connection available, but I don't have the connector on my PC. It would provide even faster transfer speeds.

The Memeo backup software bundled with the device is 30-Day trial only and not worth purchasing IMO. Although surprising that the software was trial based, I have other solutions and primarily use the device not to duplicate files but to store files apart from my PCs.

Aesthetically, it's neat and attractive with a matte black on metal finish. It has a white LED indicator light bar on the front which provides an interesting light show to externally indicate its current status. Nice functional little detail but I'm not always clear on what each animation means.

  • Quiet, lots of storage, good price
    By A2H5YV3L760BF5 on 2007-12-26
The drive runs very quiet. It powers itself off at times of inactivity. The transfer speed is decent, can't ask for much more from a backup drive. The price is reasonable. It also comes with simple backup software right on the HD.

The only minor issues I have are 1) the included mini-usb cable is about 3 feet long, and 2) when your PC is not shut off, the drive still has its light on even though it's sleeping. This light is very bright in a small room at night. Other than that, it's very easy to use: just plug-n-play.

  • Pure junk
    By A26P8QKBDELP44 on 2008-08-04
    Looks nice, doesn't run warm.

Lasted 45 days before it started spewing bad sectors. Just outside of Amazon's 30 day return policy.

Now I have to fight through Western Digital support to get a replacement. I would rather have my money back so that I can buy another brand. I hate to support garbage. I normally never buy from Western Digital, but I had hoped that they had changed. Not. I knew better.

I really do have other things to do with my life.

I had a Seagate ST305004FDA1E1-RK FreeAgent Desktop 500 GB 3.5" USB 2.0 External Hard Drive fail on me within 2 weeks of purchase. Some whiz-bang of an engineer decided that a hard drive didn't need any ventilation. It's bad when a brand new drive runs too hot to touch, then grinds to a halt, literally.

Setup in 2 mins, low noise, auto shutdown by itself to reduce energy consumption. A+

  • BEWARE
    By A2MP9372FVQKXB on 2008-07-03
I purchased a previous version of the My Book series and after having disk corruption twice it died completely after less than 2 years. All data lost. Has Western Digital improved its reliability in these newer drives? I doubt it, and I'm not willing to risk it. A positive review from someone who has only owned the drive a week isn't of much value. Read up on other review sites and discussion forums, there are tons of complaints about Western Digital's drives failing. If I were you I would shop other brands. An unreliable drive is not worth owning no matter what price you get it for.

  • Plug and Play External Drive
    By A1HDQMD058B644 on 2008-08-13
I currently have 2 terabytes of storage, 6 do-it-yourself "DIY" external drives housing various sized hard drives, and a MyBook. This review compares their performance. All drives are currently on-line connected to a 7 port USB hub.

    In the Box

A black box housing the drive, a brick power supply, and a USB cable are key items. 2 instruction sheets, and a warranty card complete the kit. The My Book is about the size of a bible one finds in hotel and motel rooms.

The drive case, power and cables leave a very clean design. All my DIY drives comes with stands, awkward sized power supplies and cable placements that are not well thought through.

    Installation

Simple: Plug the USB cable into the MyBook, and into your PC USB port. Plug in the power supply to AC and the MyBook.

The MyBook has no power switch, and turns itself on/off if the USB port is powered, when the PC is on.

The drive was recognized by WinXPSP2 without a hitch, and re-formatting the drive to NTFS was easy using WinXP built in disk utilities. The drive ships with FAT32 format, which is less desirable if NTFS can be supported. I backuped the shipped "trial" utilities inside the MyBook in case they were useful; they were not, and it was not clear were it was stored: C:\Program Files\Western Digital. I used Western Digital's disk utilities that shipped with my other drives to check partitions and drive status. These programs can also be downloaded free from Western Digital's web site.

    Break-in

The drive ran over 1 week for 24/7 for a burn in, and has done a 24 hour long disk encryption format routine. it is currently a month old running 16 hours/day. Its surprisingly silent, and runs cooler than my DIY drives.

    USB 2.0 Speed

It has a transfer rate of 10MB/sec. This is not the raw transfer rate, but includes delay from encryption I use. This is about 6x slower than the maximum USB transfer speed of 60 MB/sec but is the same rate as my other DIY drives.

    Conclusion:

Excellent bang for buck. The cost to build a DIY external drive today may often be more than buying a pre-made external drive. USB 2.0 transfer speeds suggests the MyBook drive is a decent speed drive. The auto on/off feature is very helpful, given most DIY kits require manual power-down.

Note, there are a number of complaints about the higher end MyBook drives. The simple electronics of the low end 'Essential Edition' maybe the saving grace to this drive's performance, keep this in mind as the display boxes look the same. Further, all drives can malfunction, so a burn-in is a must to insure your drive is not among the few bad eggs.

  • GOOD LUCK WITH IT!!
    By A2SXQQ3OEGZP0S on 2008-07-13
I bought this hard drive for my XPS 1530, and it has been nothing but problems. 1/2 the time my computer won't find the device, and if it does it loses connectivity with it. I tried the tech support, but they offered no help. The usb won't even work with the drive. I'm sure they're better drives out there. Take the time and find them. You'll be glad you did.

  • Best bang for buck!!!
    By A18WR45XDEU06C on 2007-12-20
    1TB of storage... nuff said.

Bought this as a companion for my Fujitsu U1010. I use it to keep my video files, mp3s and documents. No switches, small power adapter, quiet and looks like a hardcover book. The USB 2.0 is pretty slow but I imagine if it were equipped with eSATA or firewire port it wont be as useful.

The best part? I only paid $257 for it. If you're not worried about the warranty, just take the drive out of the external case and plug it in your computer. It still cost less to buy than any 1TB internal HDD by seagate or hitachi.

  • Buyer Beware
    By A8C3WNWRBWUXO on 2008-05-31
The unit appeared to be working fine for about a month before failing. Upon calling the support center we were informed that we would have to use a third party to recover the data that we could no longer access from the device. This would be at our expense!

  • Returned the next day for a refund.
    By AS37S1XQMJJWQ on 2008-01-09
The drive failed to install and windows pop-up said to refer to the manufacture for help. Down loaded the diagnostic tool from WD it could not complete the test. Tried to format it with My Computer, right click, left click manage, left click disk management, right click the drive and tried to create a new partition then format, no joy. Returned for a refund the next day.

  • Computer will not boot when this drive is connected.
    By A1U9Y1HNSESX2E on 2008-01-08
My Sony Vaio desktop will not boot when this drive is connected (tho it boots fine when another USB drive is connected). I contacted WD support over a week ago and have not heard back. For the support reason alone I would not buy this again.

  • Frustrating
    By A15XI860NAX9A on 2008-08-22
I got this for use as a backup drive using third party software. I've had a couple other WD drives which I liked fine. This one was a problem from day one, however. There were two major issues:

    1) The drive would just randomly unmount/disconnect after a few hours.

    2) The drive was painfully slow.

Unfortunately, I had some travel and was past 30 days when I returned. I tried several things -- too many, really -- to try to fix this without success. When I have time, I may remove the drive from the casing and see if it can be salvaged.

Meanwhile, I ordered a SimpleTech drive and it works like a dream, much faster with no complications, for the same price. I will be using SimpleTech in the future.

  • Just as advertised
    By A7VDA02Q4CFZ4 on 2007-11-30
Amazon shipped it fast, and it seems to work great.
Took about 2 hours to format NTFS, and filling it up will take quite a while, but it is quiet and seems to work fine.

  • not reliable
    By A3F0XXV23ONHOZ on 2008-10-08
I have bought four different WD external drives in this product family. Only one has been reliable. One died twice, having been "repaired" by WD while still in warranty. A second makes worrisome noise. The 1TB drives go asleep in 30 minutes after inactivity and cannot be awoken without restart.

Western digital internal drives, particularly the Raptor series, do not seem to have these reliability problems.

  • no problems
    By A2CR9V1Y1DW00Y on 2008-01-12
I bought this hard drive one month ago. No problems so far, and it is quit. If you want an external hard drive I recommend this one.

  • No Muss No Fuss
    By A9ELHLPXF7JKD on 2008-05-24
It works right out of the box. Just plug it in and go. It's formatted in FAT32 for backward compatibility with Windows 98 and earlier. Takes only seconds to format it with NTFS, which is what you should do for better performance. It's small, whisper quiet, and comes with all documentation on the drive itself.

  • Easy and reliable
    By A10PJQFRJF4WWN on 2007-12-31
I've owned this hard drive for 2 months now and I havn't had a single problem with it. I use this hard drive for my extensive MP3 and movie collection. My last 500 GB external Western Hard Drive failed for some reason after 1 year. I'm a little cautious about this one. I'd like to get a raid hard drive setup so I don't have to worry about this one failing.

  • Runs quiet and knows just when to sleep
    By A3QHBI3FL1BBWI on 2008-01-27
This drive is quiet when in use and it sleeps reliably when not, or when you've slept/shut down your computer. I'll without-a-doubt be getting a second 1TB MyBook drive soon to mirror this one.

  • DO NOT Buy this drive!
    By A2IIMQM3Z2EVV3 on 2008-09-03
I wish to GOD I would have read more reviews and product guides before buying - I am a mobile DJ that just took over a karaoke business. I figured -WHY NOT- get a TB drive to have everything I dj off of plus karaoke on one drive.
    HUGE MISTAKE!

First off for DJ's - this is slow and more so when using the VirtualDJ program. Between songs a 15-30second lag time. That can be forgiven though as the drive itself is massive.

Here is my own dilemma. I went to pick the drive up and the entire casing fell apart and the hard drive itself fell out! I had a friend who took it and put it in his own computer as a secondary drive to retrieve files. He rendered the whole thing useless and broken. Perhaps I got a defective one but that doesnt help me now.

I have DJ'ed with this drive a mere 3 times and used it maybe 10 times for transfers so its brand new! It is going back to the store for me to find something better which I will be reading reviews for the rest of the night.

As for now - Thank GOD I had all the DJ music backed up on my wife's laptop and a 160gig seagate. I have lost the karaoke job at the bar for now all because of a very faulty product!

Buy and use only at your own risk!

  • Died right after warranty ended.
    By A1UMY4CNNBPSXO on 2008-10-12
This was a good drive, until it went belly-up about five minutes after the warranty ended. Feh. What good is a big hard drive to back up your important data if it fails that fast?

  • A bit slow, but couldn't expect more from a USB drive

    UPDATE 2008-02-05:
Everything has been running fine. This thing is very quiet. I have it sitting in my entertainment center, hooked up to a TViX M4000 as a slave drive. It works great, powers down when the TViX shuts down, comes on when it start up. Absolutely great for what it is.

    UPDATE 2007-11-25:
So far so good with replacement drive...
The drive is properly spinning down after periods of inactivity, and it shuts itself off completely when disconnected or when the computer powers down. It appears to be running cool, but it's hard to tell since there's no side of the case that physically touches or sinks heat from the drive. Transfer speeds are about 30-35MB/sec on my machine, not too bad.

    Not blazing fast
    Doesn't appear to run hot
No power switch (turns itself on/off, spins down drive after inactivity)
    USB plug is mini-B
Works well as TViX M4000 slave device

    ORIGINAL REVIEW:
Got this home and plugged it into my WinXP SP2 computer. It took about 2 minutes to recognize. Next, formatted it NTFS and filled it with about 500GB of files, overnight. The drive was making some funny noises, like the read heads were resetting, but the speed of the transfer didn't seem affected so it was left to finish. The next morning the transfer was complete, so a verify was started... failed on all the files... windows had problems reading the directories too. Reboot, no help... disconnecting the drive and reconnecting seems to have helped, but who knows what is going on with this thing. Perhaps I got a lemon? Perhaps the USB cable was bad? We'll find out after it's returned. For now, 1 star rating.

  • Not easy to set up
    By A1M4I9SA5Y0NPT on 2008-07-02
I bought two of these. It would seem that this would be an easy product to get set up, and it should be. Except that my computer initially would not recognize the drive when plugged into the USB port, and when I later tried to reformat it with NTFS instead of FAT so I could put 4 gig + video files on it, I had a lot of trouble.

In the end, I concluded that the connectors that came with the cables must have not been making good connections initially (perhaps they had some shipping sealant) because the more I used them, the more reliably they worked.

So if you buy these and have trouble as I did, try connecting and unconnecting the cables several times and see if that helps.

  • Working good so far!
    By A3KB2TQ89ECW7M on 2008-08-10
I purchased this drive last June '08 at a great price! Total plug and play. Formatted it for Mac and started to download files off my computer; it works as said. It is a very silent drive and doesn't seem to heat up. The only thing I don't like is that it is on when the computer is up and only sleeps when the computer is asleep or off. There is no ON/OFF switch and I don't need it on all the time.

  • Large capacity, poor performance
    By AVE5LLLUCAPA5 on 2008-08-15
    August 15, 2008
This external drive was purchased for the large capacity it provides. The hard drive is enclosed in an attractive two piece plastic case. One piece mimics the cover of a book and is attractive glossy black. The other piece looks like the pages of a book and provides ventilation for the drive. A bright blue LED is located on the front of the drive. It is divided into two sections that blink in unison or alternately depending on function being performed. Overall, it is a very attractive unit.

Unfortunately, the case of the unit I received was not fitted together correctly causing one corner on the bottom of the unit to stick out slightly. This caused the unit to wobble. In additon to this problem, the performance of the drive was lackluster. After formatting the WD unit as one large NTFS drive (which took over 4 hours), I compared the WD unit with another external hard drive unit I own. The other drive consists of a Nexxtech USB external case housing a WD 200gb ATA/100 drive. The comparison consisted of performing a 7gb file copy from the local PC hard drive to each external hard drive. The copy consistently took approximately 6.5 minutes for the WD but only 4.5 minutes to the Nexxtech.

At this point, I have returned the unit due to the case defect. I have not decided yet if I will order a replacement due to the poor performance or look for another model on Amazon.

As always, Amazon customer service was excellent!

Decided to order another one since performance was not my #1 priority (though important). New drive just arrived and has a small scratch on cover right above LED which is annoyingly noticeable because of the shiny cover. Is it too hard to expect a product to arrive without cosmetic defects? Bought this unit because of the price but may end up getting an internal drive so that I don't have to worry about cosmetics (not to mention better performance since internal drive will use SATA connection).
