  • Lived up to my expectations! A little dissapointed with false advertising though!

    By AGM4K9JRDZXX6 on 2008-03-14
This product definately lived up to my expectations. It looks good, it moves (something many mcfarlane toys don't or are limited to), and is very nice to display in various poses. The toy however does seem a bit fragile and probably not meant to be played with. I stopped playing with toys long ago, so I don't really care, but I can imagine all these young children taking it out, ready to play some awesome mastercheif action only to have the toy disintegrate limb by limb by just the everyday wears and tears of average child's play! These toys are geared towards children and that is why they are designed to move and pose. Defiantely as well made as the other Halo toys that have been in production, but they definately look alot better!

I was also very disappointed that the picture shows a grenade attached to master chief's leg, the box even states that a grenade is included, yet all we get is an assault rifle and a little black peg with no instructions on how you use such peg. However if you look on Master Chief's back and legs, there are holes to put the peg in. These pegs are so that MC can put his weapon on his back and maybe a grenade on his thigh.... except we only get one peg, and ZERO grenades! What is this?!?!?! False advertisement! The packaging states that the grenades are included! So now my master chief sits on the shelf holding a rifle in his hand, and with a black peg sticking out of his back... since I didn't want to lose the peg, and also since the peg stick out of his leg looks really stupid! This is my biggest complaint! I cant believe that they let this problem happen! It says on the package "includes grenades". Well I don't see A grenade... let alone this so called "grenades" business! Major disappointment especially from a toy company like McFarlane who's whole infrastructure is based on pure quality!

Well enough of that. Lets say I will let them slide on that one fact.... just barely! But only because the toy is very nice looking, it poses (not easily mind you), but it still poses and looks great on my shelf where it is meant to be! I like this product overall, and recommend it, but looks like series 2 will be the same chief, but with 2 guns and grenades! So maybe its better to wait. Hopefully they will release the grenades next time! I think I am going to get Cortana next! Also accessory packs would be nice that include different weapons and GRENADES!

  • a bit fragile

    By A2GVVAO242EK1D on 2008-03-10
Like anything from McFarlane the detail on Master Chief is superb. It is a great addition to a shelve or computer table. It isn't the most durable item made though, with the arms breaking off of mine as I took it out of its wrapping. And to be fair these aren't really made to be children's toys I guess, which is for the best.

  • Halo Action Figures - from a Child User's View

    By AJTZU1IAB1SH9 on 2008-05-21
This review is not for collectors; it is for people buying these items as toys to play with. My 8 year old son is a fan of the PC Console based HALO game, so for his birthday we got him a Master Chief and a Jackal Sniper. We have a couple of the other figures on order. As action figure toys, they have some notable flaws. 1)The hands cannot grip the weapons well at all. These are fighting figures and they can't even hold and manipulate their rifles for the kid's scenarios. Hand position and lack of articulation is a big disappointment. 2)The Master Chief's rifle is designed and built so that the muzzle falls off and is nearly impossible to keep glued in place. 3) The Master Chief box said it comes with grenades; there were no grenades. 4)They are not particularly sturdy. The Jackal Sniper's head, in particular, is prone to coming off. 5) The weapons come with little pegs so they can be held and so they can fit into holding spots. You will have to glue the pegs into the weapons or - you will lose them, or they will stick into the holding holes and have to be pried loose to be put back into the weapon.
Overall, my son is happy to have these guys, but I notice that he clearly does not find them very much fun to play with compared to his expectations and to his other action figures and Legos. I believe these design and construction issues are a big part of that.

  • happy meal size

    By A3FEKMYO7JEULP on 2008-03-21
like you have read before, there is no grenade. I was a little disappointed but i'll live. its just a toy, get over it.
One thing that I was greatly disappointed with is the scale that the Master Chief and the rest of the mcfarlane halo 3 series toys. They do not match the size of the halo 2 toys from Rc2 and racing champions.
So if you have the halo 2 spartans and covenant action figures, then don't bother adding these midget mcfarlane toys on the same shelf. frankly it would look just weird. Like a happy meal toy with a G.I. Joe, it simply does not work.
But with that said, this toy does have its perks. 18 points of articulation works great. the figure is very stable, unlike the larger halo 2 series. And (for you nerds like me) smaller toys take up less shelf space.

  • Halo 3 Series 1 Master Chief

    By A3319FIK7D2CO on 2008-03-11
The products from McFarlane are renown for their exquisite detail and profound likenesses of the people and characters they are intended to portray. The Halo 3 Series 1 Master Chief is no exception to this trend. With the attention paid to the minute embellishments, this is more of a miniature posable statue than an action figure.

The much-lauded 18 points of articulation make this figure far more dexterous than your run-of-the-mill action figure, though the range of motion isn't nearly as large as one would expect. The larger connectors at the shoulders, elbows, hips, knees and ankles are textured to reduce the "jointed-ness" inherent in posable figures. The joints, themselves, are on the stiff side, however, and the plastic is a bit fragile, thus making its longevity as a toy somewhat dubious. But, for my purposes (i.e. pose once and display on a shelf), the stiff joints are a blessing and the durability is barely an issue.

It should be noted, however, that the product I received differs slightly than the photos and product description provided by Amazon. This may be due to Amazon's use of pre-production photographs and descriptions on their product page. First, while there are definitely metallic paint hues utilized on the figure, it is nowhere near the level suggested by the photos. The visor is, thankfully, a lustrous gold, but the metallic olive armor paint is intentionally worn to give the illusion of wear and tear. I happen to like this effect, but the opinions of others may vary. Second, the contents of the clamshell package was limited to the Master Chief figure, the assault rifle, and a small, dark-grey peg insert for attaching accessories (rifles, handguns, grenades, etc.) to any of the four mounting points on the figure (one on the upper spine, two on the back hips, and one on the right thigh). The "grenade accessory pack" mentioned in the Amazon description and shown in the product photos is conspicuously missing from the package (and from the current photographs of the figure at mcfarlane.com).

Will everyone love this figure? Probably not. But I'm quite satisfied with it.

  • Neat toy
    By A300D3WI02RJ6L on 2008-03-13
The toy is a great replica of the chief. The detail is amazing and I'm suprised by the price. It is delicate: The hand chipped off when I tried removing the toy from the box, but it was easy to fix. One problem was making the toy grip the gun accessory. The hand looks like it was made with the thumb molded to the fingers but I learned the thumb pivits on its own. Also, does it come with a grenade? The pictures show a grenade and even the box reads that grenades are included but I could not find one. Great buy for a halo fan.

  • Very good figure! A couple of little issues.
    By A15S5S0W13O9BO on 2008-03-16
Got the figure and as has been reported in other reviews there is no grenade packed in with the MC Series 1 figure. Now, I am not going to say the I feel robbed, but I think it is a mistake that was made during production. The grenade is pictured, and it'd be nice to see them come up with some way to get the thing. The other small issue I have is with the articulation. I'm glad that the figure is as articulated as it is, but the joints are in kind of strange places and some are quite stiff. Plus, is seems a little strange that MC's foot twists in the middle.

Those are my only issues, I really like the level of detail and the figure does seem fairly durable. Overall, a nice figure and I'll be buying more in the series. I have some of the other Halo collectibles and I would say that this is every bit as good as the Joyride toys (if not better).

  • Master Chief is cool
    By A1VKXQCIRW8HWP on 2008-04-05
I bought this item for collection purposes only. I do not intend to open the product to play with it, but I can say that the detail is awesome, which is to be expected from all McFarlane toys. The only grip that I have is that it is shown, on the packaging and in pictures all over promoting this figure, having a grenade. And as far as I can tell, not one of Master Chief's figures have one. But overall, I would recommend it to any Halo fan or video game figures collector.

  • halo
    By A33AAY75S7JK00 on 2008-04-18
I purchased the Halo figure for my teen drawing class. It is excellent proportionally and an interesting subject for the kids to draw. Full articulation lends itself to varied vantage points and added "energy" to a pose. Would like a little larger sized figure and one that doesn't feel fragile...I suspect that the compromise would be for the details and articulations...so overall I would take the details/articulations over the sturdiness.

  • No Grenade Included!
    By A3SF4SETNLYSXG on 2008-04-19
The figure looks great and has many movable joints. The paint job uses sort of a metallic green with paint flecks that really feels authentic. The visor looks good, but it's not reflective like it should be (like halo 1 figures were). The figure is a bit smaller then I expected (about half the size of halo 1 figures). The figure does not come with a grenade as advertised which is a bit of a disappointment and would definitely increase the fun level of this toy and it would have been a simple thing to include. I wonder if there are a few crates of tiny grenades sitting in a warehouse somewhere? I think even if it did have the grenade its still sort of an incomplete package without a second weapon which would take it to the next level. My final review score is low mostly because there was no grenade included even though it clearly says so on the box.

  • Simply amazing!!!
    By A1BJQ04LDU8V97 on 2008-04-24
Are you kidding me. Nothing else out there can compare to the incredible detail of these figures. I have been wanting a master cheif since Halo 2 but held off because the other figures before Mcfarlane's looked retarded. This is master chief at his finest. No complaints here. I do not open my figures however, so I wouldnt know if these are great for play. In my opinion these are mainly made for collectors. Mcfarlane actually targets the older collector audience. I am very pleased over all.
Fantastic figures! Don't understand how anyone could not rate this product a 5 out of 5.

  • master chief
    By A3SYKTJ1OPUYDP on 2008-05-02
I got this for my 6-year-old son, and you know how discerning kids can be at that age. He thinks it's the coolest - the design and attention to detail are fantastic. I'm thinking the thumb is a little weak and might break off after too much activity with the rifle, but so be it. (I wonder if toys these days are made more for the 35-year-old guys who live at home and collect them, rather than kids who will play with the toys.)

  • Amazing
    By A3JSM8CCUQM5UG on 2008-05-16
Fantastic detail, did not come with advertised grenades, but its all good. Visor is painted with reflective paint, not mirror like as shown in pic, but still well done. Astonishing overall product for a fan of the trilogy.

  • The Master Chief...
    By A16PPE8U5G9IZL on 2008-07-09
Being a fan of the game series, I'd wanted to get a Master Chief figure for some time, but had missed the Halo 2 release. So when the Halo 3 figures came out, I picked this guy up at a local Toys'R'Us.
Impressions: I can't say I have any complain with this figure appearance wise. He is well detailed, not just with painted details, but sculpted elements, from the various lines of his armor, to pits and dents, to the black inner layer of the armor. No sculpted detail was spared.
As far as possibility, again I was not disappointed. Arms, legs, knees, elbows, even wrists, ankles and toes move, giving one a wide variety of poses to put him in.
There is negatives, though. He doesn't seem terrible sturdy, although mine hasn't broken yet. But I take care of my stuff. I can imagine a kid taking him through serious play and breaking something off. But this figure seems like more of a collectors' piece to me.
Also, as you'll notice others have said, the grenades (that the package said were included) were nowhere to be found inside. Thus, the Master Chief comes only with his assault rifle, and the peg you use to mount it on his back. Really, where are the grenades?
There were no instructions about mounting the weapon either, even though it is pretty straight forward. Peg goes into his back, and the small end of the peg sticks out so you can put it in the hole of his rifle, thus supporting it. But to me, it seems a bit odd for him to be holding no weapon, yet have his rifle on his back. I really wish for more weapons. Maybe a shotgun or a pistol even maybe?
Oh yeah, the rifle doesn't fit perfectly in his hand either. It tends to be quite lose.
And while the paint job on the figure is pretty good, the rifle (at least the one that came with mine) does seem to have a lesser quality paint job.
But anyway, for collectors, this is a fine figure. Just don't expect a high durability figure, and don't be surprised if you get no grenades.
