Selecting a Tent
Fortunately, there are all kinds of tents for weekend car campers, Everest expeditions, and everything in-between. Here are a few things to keep in mind:

Expect the Worst
In general, it's wise to choose a tent that's designed to withstand the worst possible conditions you think you'll face. For instance, if you're a summer car camper in a region where weather is predictable, an inexpensive family or all purpose tent will likely do the trick--especially if a vehicle is nearby and you can make a mad dash for safety when bad weather swoops in! If you're a backpacker, alpine climber or bike explorer, or if you like to car camp in all seasons, you'll want to take something designed to handle more adversity.

Three- and Four-Season Tents
For summer, early fall and late spring outings, choose a three-season tent. At minimum, a quality three season tent will have lightweight aluminum poles, a reinforced floor, durable stitching, and a quality rain-fly. Some three-season tents offer more open-air netting and are more specifically designed for summer backpacking and other activities. Many premium tents will feature pre-sealed, taped seams and a silicone-impregnated rain-fly for enhanced waterproofness.

For winter camping or alpine travel, go with a four season model. Because they typically feature more durable fabric coatings, as well as more poles, four-season tents are designed to handle heavy snowfall and high winds without collapsing. Of course, four-season tents exact a weight penalty of about 10 to 20 percent in trade for their strength and durability. They also tend to be more expensive.

Domes, Tunnels and Sacks
Tents are broadly categorized into two types, freestanding, which can stand up on their own, and those that must be staked down in order to stand upright. Freestanding tents often incorporate a dome-shaped design, and most four-season tents are constructed this way because a dome leaves no flat spots on the outer surface where snow can collect. Domes are also inherently stronger than any other design. Meanwhile, many three-season models employ a modified dome configuration called a tunnel. These are still freestanding, but they require fewer poles than a dome, use less fabric, and typically have a rectangular floor-plan that offers less storage space than a dome configuration. Many one and two-person tents are not freestanding, but they make up for it by being more lightweight. Because they use fewer poles, they can also be quicker to set up than a dome.

Size Matters
Ask yourself how many people you'd like to fit in your fabric hotel now and in the future. For soloists and minimalists, check out one-person tents. If you're a mega-minimalist, or if you have your eye on doing some big wall climbs, a waterproof-breathable bivy sack is the ticket. Some bivy sacks feature poles and stake points to give you a little more breathing room. Also, if you don't need bug protection and you want to save weight, check out open-air shelters.

Families who plan on car camping in good weather can choose from a wide range of jumbo-sized tents that will accommodate all your little ones with room to spare. A wide range of capacities is also available for three- and four-season backpacking and expedition tents. Remember, though, the bigger the tent you buy, the heavier it will be, although it's easy to break up the tent components among several people in your group. It's also helpful to compare the volume and floor-space measurements of models you're considering.

  • Great Tent

    By A3B51WBW2AVST0 on 2007-08-01
My husband and I were able to set the tent up easily. The second day of camping it started to sprinkle , then during the night and early morning it poured. We didn't have one drop of water in our tent. It was wonderful after prior
experiences with two different tents. (Indoor pools in our tent)
There are two panels you can hang to divide the space. My kids each had their own room on the ends.
We liked the little mesh panel for the ceiling used for a small cargo hold.
    Highly recommended!

  • You could get wet!

    By A1BK8P1D7OZDK3 on 2008-01-20
This tent was purchased for a late fall family weekend excursion into the Ozarks. My first bit of caution can also be a plus, so it is not the reason for my rating. THIS THING IS HUGE! It is difficult to find a place to set up. Once set up though there is enough room for 2 adults, 2 kids, 2 dogs and have a "lobby" in the middle.

On a less pleasant note. A middle of the night thunderstorm rolled in. Though the bathtub flooring is effective, the rainfly does not fully protect the seams. And, regardless of what the manual says, the seams are not water proof.

If you do purchase this tent follow a few guidelines and you should be fine. 1) make sure you are staying somewhere that will accomodate such a large tent 2) regardless of what the manual says, seal the seams on your own 3) It's pretty easy to set up but needs 2 people

  • Sturdy summer tent

    By A1BKJNAWJT2TG2 on 2008-01-19
This is a nice, spacious SUMMER tent. Don't even think about using it if its spring/fall and the temperatures might drop, but its fantastic in hot weather, rain or not. Also this isn't a tent for windy conditions due to its high profile. I can set this tent up alone, although getting the rain fly over the top can be a bit tricky on my own, it does eventually get there. I hadn't thought about how tough it would be for 65" tall me to get a rain fly over the 78" top of a 10x17' tent! I bought this tent for summer camping when rain was a likely complication, when I am NOT packing it more than a few yards from the vehicle. (It is a heavy tent.) It holds a table, chairs, cot, gear, and dog quite comfortably and is ridiculously spacious when I am camping alone. When a group is camping and the weather goes wet, it becomes a great place for people to get together out of the rain and have coffee, play cards, etc. I do think the "cool port" thing is about the dumbest looking thing I have ever seen on a tent though...it looks like either a demented dog door or I'm expecting the little people to join me. The "mud mat" is also rather dorky. Being three room is kind of stretching it, but the curtains are useful for changing clothes when there is a mixed group together.

Minuses on this tent: it has a single d-door with a single zipper pull, which starts on the bottom. It has huge mesh sections in the ceiling over the ends, and there isn't any way to close them off. It lacks extra tie down points on the rain fly for foul weather when the wind kicks up a bit, which means its inclined to really start popping in a gust. There are not very many stake points on the tent itself either, which also help in foul weather.

This is a very decent budget tent for summer use.

  • Haven't used in heavy rain yet.

We bought this a couple of weeks ago. We put in up in the yard ahead of our camping trip because we're new at this. It was easy to put up. Looks nice. VERY roomy for our family of four.

  • Great Tent For The Money
    By A3SZ9410NDNXZB on 2008-05-25
We just got back from our camping trip and have to give this tent 5 stars! When we had first received the tent, we set it up in the backyard as practice and felt the directions were a little confusing, but did manage to get the then up reasonably fast. When we go to the campsite, initially it was just myself and my son and because we had practiced putting it up, it took no more then 15 minutes to have it up and ready for use.

Within a few hours of putting the tent up, it began to rain and I mean it poured for a few hours. During this time the inside of the tent remained dry. By bedtime it had begun to rain and it rained most of the night. We woke up to a dry tent! We were so impressed and excited how well it held up to all the rain we encountered.

The only thing I don't agree with is sleeping 8 people, however we had four of us in the tent with some room to spare. This included 2 twin air mattresses and 1 queen size mattress.

To make a long story short, I would highly recommend this great tent!

  • Great Tent!
    By A2U3M51DHYG7WA on 2008-06-27
It housed 4 of us easily. It kept us dry during the rain and stayed in place during high winds. We practiced putting it up in our backyard prior to our trip and it was very simple. We had it up and ready for action within 20 minutes and that was with fairly high winds!

  • Great tent. Performs well in rain. Needs two people/heavy.
    By A2391AF4CE9469 on 2008-08-01
    Positive:

We camped recently for the first time ever. We used this tent for this trip. It rained continuously from the time we pitched the tent at 3PM all through the night. We could even see puddles of water formed around the camp ground. But this tent held up very good in rain. Did not even have a wet drop.

The tent was relatively cheap, but looks well built. I cannot comment on durability since we used it only once.

Very roomy. The fact that you can stand up in the tent makes a big difference in feeling like home.

    Negatives:

I would have given it five, except for the fact that, this tent is heavy. Pitching it, particularly securing the rain-fly needs to people to do it properly. Even then, it took us about an hour to pitch the tent completely with rain-fly and securing the guy lines.

The tent itself is made of decent materials, but the stakes supplied look cheap. Better off buying somewhat sturdier stakes.

Overall I would recommend this tent if you need space, good performance in rain and would not mind the weight and needing two people to pitch.

  • Couldn't ask for anything more.
    By A1P1OJREM3SVDH on 2008-09-01
This product is perfect. I purchased this for our family of 6 in order to enjoy a family camp that our friends invited us to on their property. Although I have extensive experience in camping (Eagle Scout), it's been about 10 years since I had last camped. I was able to setup this tent by myself in about 10 minutes; this included the rain fly and filling it with our stuff. Bringing the tent down was just as easy, although I have to agree with some of the other reviewers who stated that it's impossible to fit all of the components back in the provided bag. All in all, I would highly recommend this tent to any large family either novice or experienced. THANK YOU COLEMAN!

  • Room enough for three queen beds and then some
    By A28D0ZBKWQ08K2 on 2008-09-24
TWENTY FIVE MINUTES BY MYSELF: From the time I unrolled the tarp (which was a separate purchase) to the time I finished securing the rainfly. And that was taking my time. I'm a 5'8" person. I let the wind help me with the rainfly. Secure one side, and work towards the direction of the wind. I am not a camper. This is only the second tent I have set up. But am trying to help my son have a successful cubscouting year even with my hubby being deployed. I got this tent because our first family tent my hubby snapped one of the poles and the replacement costs a fifth of this one. Besides a 15.5 x 12 feet dome tent seems awfully small for two adults and four kids. I had little space to sleep in the only time all 6 of us went camping in it and that was a little over a year ago. THIS tent is VERY roomy. You could put three queen size inflatable beds and still have space. Coleman rates this an 8-person tent. I think that is stretching it. I don't know how 8 adults can comfortably fit in this. 6 would but 8 would be a tight fit. Whatever happened to elbow room :). Anyway, this is the best bang for the buck if you want my honest, novice opinion.

  • Good Value
    By A2DFR2WOZUOOIE on 2008-04-08
Set the tent up in the backyard for a sleepover for one of my girls. The tent went up with a little difficulty compared to a North Face 3 person tent, but that was understandable. The directions could have had more detail, but it took about 15 minutes to put the tent up. The tent was roomy and someone who is 6' could stand in the middle of the tent. Should be able to fit 8 adults comfortably in the tent. The rain fly attached well and would provide good protection in the event of rain, which we didn't encounter. Didn't use the room dividers. The tent seems durable. Tent gets good ventilation and is easy to get in and out of.

  • Easy for a first-timer
    By A2YND14YUU1QBF on 2008-05-08
This tent is quite easy to set up and take down, especially for me - a first-time ever tent owner. I have 3 small boys, ages 2, 3 & 4 years. I was able to set this tent up by myself the day it arrived while playing with my boys in the backyard, and hubby was at work. The boys had lots of fun playing in it in the backyard and we look forward to using it to camp soon. I only give it 4 stars instead of 5 for 2 reasons: 1) the instructions could be a little better for a novice like me; and 2) I agree with the other reviewer who stated they couldn't fit it back in the bag; I gave up trying after 15 minutes, I do not see how it can fit in the bag the way it came. Despite those two small inconveniences, this is a great family tent!

  • Great inexpensive tent
    By A1YAAI9IC50XLO on 2008-10-19
$83 bucks for this tent with free shipping can't be beat!

I've had it out backyard camping 3 times. It's easy to set-up and HUGE.

SET-UP. It's a breeze. Lay it out in a large spot. Run the shock-corded poles through the appropriate places on the tent. Tack it down. Toss on the rainfly. Tack it down. Camp. Despite it being big, I was able to do it by myself without much effort.

TEAR-DOWN. Very easy. Good luck getting it all back in the bag though.

    NICE:
-Double zippers on door - allows you to run power cord in without large gaps for bugs to get it.
-Tub floor should prevent flooding from below.
-Plenty of room for 2 adults, 2 seven year-olds, air mattresses. If it'd fit through the door, I'd wager you could fit two regular king size mattresses in there.

    ISSUES:
-Tent pegs are puny. Luckily, we had no wind. Bought some bigger pegs for less than $10.
-Little modesty without rainfly. Top of tent is mostly screen.
-Tub floor, makes it necessary to step up to get in/out. Forgetting leads to skinned knees and palms.

CONSIDERATIONS I COULDN'T EVALUATE: Cold weather performance. Rain performance. Wind performance.

I don't think you could find a better tent that's this size for under $100. Amazon has a great deal on a great tent.

  • Great Tent that could be fantastic with a couple of improvements
    By A1PVKDQLGZPNIP on 2008-11-05
I bought this tent for our 6-year old's first camping trip with the Cub Scouts. Yeah, I probably could have gotten a smaller tent for our 4-person family but the price + free shipping was too good to pass up.

Anyways, it rained all day during the day we got to the camp site and I was worried about the tent leaking. Fortunately, not so much as a drop leaked in after we got the tent setup despite the constant downpour. We had more than enough room for the four of us and our belongings. Another father with a tent made by a different brand was not so lucky as the floor of his tent was being flooded by water coming in from the seams. He ended up packing up and going home.

I do wish that the vents on top of the tent had zipper enclosures. While the rainfly kept the rain away and the seams did not leak, rain did get inside the tent through the top vents while we were setting the tent up and before we could get the rainfly on. Being able to close those vents would also help to block out any cold air. We got around this by purchasing some parachute/tent-like material and placing it over the vents. It still got chilly in the tent as the temperature dropped into the high 30s the second night but it was livable with ample blankets.

Overall, this is an excellent tent and both my wife and I came away impressed with how it stood up in the rain. If Coleman had included zipper closures for the vents on the roof, I would have easily given it a 5 star rating.

  • loved the tent
    By A1ESS3R4ZHVDFL on 2008-10-06
I purchased this tent to camp out in the back yard with my 5 and 3 year old girls. The 5 year old and I were able to set it up the first time in about 40 minutes and the second time in about 15. This tent is light and the design is for summer use only. There is plenty of space and the set up is very easy. The most difficult part is packing it away. Make sure you fold the tent in thirds length wise, then in half and roll it and the rain over up very tightly into one roll. If you do that you can get it back in the bag, but if not you will need heavens help.

  • Great tent for the price
    By A1AIK0JHNQEGK7 on 2008-10-09
This is our first large tent purchase and I bought it because after reading tons of ratings on other tents, this is the one that, for the price, seemed to be as waterproof as advertised based on user ratings.

It's easier to set up than you would think. I'm a 5'7", 130-lb woman and set it up by myself. The instructions are attached to the inside of the bag next to the zipper (as they always are on Coleman tents with zipper bags). It took about 30 minutes because attaching the guylines takes a little while, as does finding spots to drive the stakes w/o hitting rocks. Once the guylines are attached, you don't have to do it again. The most frustrating part was raising the center poles by myself. They are very long and really could use 4 hands instead of 2, but after fiddling with them just right I got them up in 10 minutes or so. With 2 hands, they tend to just fall over and make S shapes instead of dome shapes due to their length vs. strength. But like I said, I got them up. The sides poles are easy. The poles are color-coded (per the instructions) with red or grey stickers, but after you set the tent up once, you can tell which poles are which w/o needing the color coding. The side poles are thinner than the center dome poles. Our poles were not red and grey like the poles in the picture on this website. They were all black.

The inside of the tent is very roomy and attractive, with some gold accents on the white areas of the tent. I like the white - it adds a very current look to the tent.

The room dividers come detatched, and attach with loops. The zipper on the only door to the tent is doing fine so far, but on all of our older Coleman D-door dome tents the zippers have eventually broken after a few years, so we'll see with this one. I'm surprised Coleman hasn't changed their door design. I also don't like how the door has a 4-inch lip in front of it that you have to step over when going in and out. I wish they'd lower the door to almost ground level. It would also make it easier to sweep out.

I also don't like the rain fly. In the picture, the fly is away from the tent all the way around, but when you set it up, there are 4 symmetrical spots where the fly touches the body of the tent. I haven't tested this tent in rain yet, but the fly should never touch the tent. We fiddled with the fly off and on for a couple of days and was never able to raise the fly off the tent in any of these 4 spots. I also think that due to the size of the tent, a rain fly should come down closer to the ground instead of stopping midway down the tent. So I hope this tent is really as waterproof as people say.

Also, the tent didn't come with the little yellow hammer advertised on the package. But that's ok, because for less than $2 you can get a rubber mallet at any major retailer in the camping section, and rubber mallets work tons better than little plastic hammers.

Make note of how they pack it, because you'll need to simulate that when packing up. Always use your tent poles to tightly roll the tent towards the door, otherwise you'll never get the bag zipped. The poles will give you a good gauge on how wide your roll should be and also help you roll tight. The instructions give you NO guidance on how to pack it back up.

You won't need a tarp. All modern tents have a bottom already made out of waterproof tarp material, and the tarp habit stems from back when they weren't, so don't bother.

Overall, for the price, if you want a large, roomy tent, this is a good deal. You can get a Coleman for the price of an Ozark Trail (which leak like a seive).

  • Awesome tent
    By A2P1MQ6R2DVY6O on 2008-10-15
This is the best tent I have ever used. It rained our whole weekend trip and it stayed completely dry inside. Also the last tent I had was 18 x 10 and this one had more room than the 18x10 one did. The ends are as wide as the middle. There were only 3 of us in the tent with a queen size air mattress for two adults and 1 twin air mattress for one kid, two suitcases, and one big army backpack and we still had alot of room. We easily could have put two queen size air mattresses in it and still had quite a bit of room left over. My husband is 6'3" and easily stood in the middle of the tent. I would definitely recommend this tent.

  • Best Tent
    By A2Z966R0LFOBAD on 2008-11-03
This is the first tent that I have puchased. I used it at a boyscout event. It Rained for 5 hours the first night. Thunder and Lighting. I woke up in the AM Dry. Most everyone else had standing water in their tents. It was bad many went home. This tent can easily fit two double thick Queen size beds plus Gear. I talked a friend into buying this and they are happy as well. I will admit that I sealed the seams with extra sealant. We will never know if it was needed or not. Still a great buy at $54.00.

  • Awsome Tent!
    By A3LK0GKKBBYMDH on 2008-11-11
I love this tent! It arrived super quick and we were able to put it up in no time at all. The rain fly took us a bit longer until we understood the concept. The directions are not the greatest but they're fine. The tent is BIG with plenty of room for my husband, myself and our two little ones. It has little pockets on either side to store your wallet, keys, phone, etc. It also has a little clothes line that goes across the back. There is a little port hole out the back for cords and/or ventilation. My kids love that hole and they are able to fit through it. They think it's great fun to stick both their heads out the hole at the same time. We sealed the seams ahead of our first trip and had no leakage, although it did not rain during our trip. We had to put the tent up in the dark on our first trip and had no trouble at all. Easy to put up but I am 5'3" so I don't think it would have been easy to do alone. We put two queen sized air mattresses on either side of the tent and then put our bags in the middle so that we could change clothes while standing. Spacious and durable tent. My only complaint is that we could not get it back into the bag. Close but not quite. I'd like to see someone do it! I wish they had made the bag just a bit bigger or had some sort of expandable material to help fit it in.

  • Good tent for the price
    By AR9HH2U8G30TO on 2008-11-23
This tent has met the need. We were stuck in strong winds and the elastic string holding two poles broke, thus the poles weren't functional. They broke because the poles separated and the metal sleeves cut the elastic string. We had to sleep the last night of the cub scout camp in the van.

Coleman didn't want to replace the poles, but when they realized the tent was purchased only a few weeks prior, they decided to do so since it could be returned to Amazon.

The warranty doesn't sound like high winds exempt the replacement of broken parts. It sounds unconditional, which a scouting family needs. I prefer to purchase from companies that quickly and happily replace broken parts under warranty and not argue with the customer.

Of course, this tent shouldn't be used for winter, it is a three-season tent.

Coleman Montana Big Sky Seven-Person Dome Tent My family has not yet used this tent in the rain, but we have been camping in it in dry weather and as a family of five it worked extremly well one child slept in two of the rooms and in the center was my husband and I and a pack-and-play for our infant and it had plenty of room! It was very well ventalated and it was very easy to set up and take down. The children also like to set it up in the back yard and play in it. I have no complaints as of yet(as listed above we have not used it in the rain yet) I do recomend bying this tent.

  • Very Happy...
    By AVC7QVDA9MTM3 on 2008-06-20
We just put our tent up for the first time since receiving it. We set it up in the backyard for a trial run before our camping trip. We are very suprised at the size and quality of this tent for the price we paid. It was very easy to put up...my husband had it set up in about 20 minutes and pretty much set it up on his own. We are a family of 4 and plan to set up 2 queen size blow up mattresses up for sleeping plus all of our gear and we find it is plenty big enough.

  • Great tent for the money.
    By AQ1UV7LD9JZ16 on 2008-09-27
Bought this tent for our annual family camping weekend. It arrived very quickly, within a couple days of ordering it, in a small, compact package. We were going to arrive at the site after dark, so I sent it ahead- unopened- with family members to be put up ahead of our arrival. My sister and niece were able to put it up in no time, and neither one is known for their assembly abilities! The tent is roomy and worked well for 1 adult and 5 kids. We didn't use the room dividers as it was easier to move around and arrange mattresses, etc., without them.We only camped for a weekend, but I am very happy with the tent.

Very good tent for price. Used it in rain and no leaks. Held my three sons three air matresses and myself with room to spare.

  • This thing is huge. Almost perfect

First off, this thing is huge. I bought this for my wife and kid go go camping with me and I do not regret it. We had three cots and a toilet setup inside the tent and still could walk (I am 5'11') around in the tent.

The tent itself is easy to setup. Same foldable peg system many of the tents use nowadays. The difference is that the pegs latch onto rings so they do not get stuck. Very handy.

Its Good looking tent too. The color was nice and the front door is very large with a secondary zipper for a mesh door. Without the rainfly on the roof is all mesh to see the stars.

I did have some minor problems though. The rainfly works but it is not quiet big enough. It covers and works for light rain but I am not so sure it would work in heavy rain or windy rain.

My tent did not come with a hammer as advertised. No biggie I had a rubber mallet anyway. The big you are supposed to carry this thing around in is not big enough. Once you take it out and set it up the first time you are never getting it back in that bag. It ain't happening. Buy a tub at Wal-mart to store it.
