Guitar Hero 3x$1.30

(13 reviews)

Best Price: $13.98 $1.30

The Guitar Hero III Companion Piece is a combination of two different products - a traditional soundtrack of music from the Guitar Hero III game and an expansion pack of songs for the game. We call this a "companion piece" since it is a compliment to the newest version of Guitar Hero III. This piece provides fans many of the key songs from the game as well as new songs/levels for them to play.

The music portion of the companion piece will feature songs from the Guitar Hero such as AFI "Miss Murder", Sonic Youth "Kool Thing", Queens of the Stone Age "3's and 7's", and many more.

The expansion portion for the game will literally be new levels for the game - new songs to be played in the Guitar Hero III game. These bonus songs will be delivered via a CODE on an insert in the CD package. This code is unique for Xbox Live, where the user can type in the code and download 3 exclusive tracks in guitar hero format directly into the Xbox game. These three "expansion songs" are unreleased material from 3 of the biggest rock acts in the world: * "Carcinogen Crush" from AFI (from a forthcoming EP of new material due in December) * "Tina" from Flyleaf * A remix of Marilyn Manson's "Putting Holes in Happiness" by Nick Zinner from Yeah Yeah Yeahs MPN: 001013102 - UPC: 602517487659

  • Obviously meant for 360 owners

    By A5GJDB2BS503 on 2007-11-01
It seems to me that the previous posters are quite obviously not 360 owners, or just don't know about the reason why it's a companion CD and not a compilation CD.

In addition to the songs included with the CD, one also get's three additional songs to be downloaded via Xbox Live. For $10 you get what amounts to a song pack that usually runs 500 Xbox Live Points (value $6.25), with a copy of the songs from the game that you can listen to when you don't have your console readily available to you to play them.

Yes a lot of people will have these songs already in their music collections. So what it really boils down to for these people is, do you want to pay for a song pack and a couple of songs that you could otherwise download from iTunes (Curses be to Apple), or do the "illegal" route (down with the DMCA & RIAA) and BT them?

Either the way the value is not meant for Wii and PS3 owners to determine, but for 360 owners!

  • Needs a re-release

    By AQKLGDNJJAFPK on 2007-10-27
I agree with the previous reviewer. There are about 70 songs in GH3, and although some of these make sense to include, others don't. With GH2, I had many of the tracks already in my personal CD catalog, and I legally downloaded the remainder I didn't have from iTunes, costing me about $15 or so. Given the increase in number of tracks on GH3, it's going to be nearly impossible for most of us to ever get a comprehensive soundtrack of the game. Although this is a nice sampling for the casual rock n roll fan, those of us that want all the songs ought to be treated with a multi-CD set.

The game is about the music, so let's "hear" it!

  • Where are the other 68 tracks?

    By AUD4H1ESU1BXP on 2007-10-26
After Guitar Hero, Guitar Hero 2 and Guitar Hero: Rocks the '80s came out it was only a matter of days before it was easy to download all the tracks for them, the only hitch being it was illegal, with no easy legal option available. These were therefore massively downloaded, so it makes sense to release an official soundtrack this time around right? This is the result, a handful of tracks that will be included in the game, most of which are probably already in your music collection.

I was thrilled to get to hear the rethought version of "Devil Went Down to Georgia" and am glad to have it in my collection, but thought it could have been better as the vocals were at best mediocre. The GH3 theme was fun, but too short lived for me, and where were the original compositions by Slash and Tom Morello? Will they release another CD with those, or will piracy be the only option?

Quite frankly, I feel that Activision has taken the wrong step by releasing only a partial soundtrack and should have released an additional, more expensive soundtrack with all the tracks from the game, including the bonus and original tracks that will be nigh impossible to get without turning to P2P file servers such as KaZaA or BitTorrent.

For what it is though, this is a fairly mediocre album that will sell well because of the Guitar Hero name on it.

    2/5

  • An Unworthy Companion

    By A1JSPVBO30TFSE on 2007-11-06
You know, part of me wants to recommend this CD as others have done before me, but I really just can't bring myself to do it. My issue isn't with the quality of the disc or the music therein, but honestly - how many people are REALLY going to buy this for the music that's on the CD? For that $13, you can download a lot of these tracks from iTunes or eMusic or even right here at Amazon. No - the real draw for this item is the three song download that comes with it. I must say, you've got to jump through a few hoops to get your songs (put your code in at the website then register then check email then get that then go put in your code and get your code that you then put into your Live account), and while they're not terrible, it's hard to say they're worth the price tag of this entire record. Unfortunately, as I write this review, it's the only way to get those songs in the game at all.

This leaves me sort of at loggerheads with myself. I can't really fault a Guitar Hero completist for buying this CD just for the song pack, but I can't say that it's any kind of a good value with a straight face. I mean, the Guitar Hero 2 song packs were ridiculous, and they cost half this much. If you're just a casual fan, I wouldn't worry much about having this. If you're a dedicated collector and you want all the tracks, I have to say that I don't see you listening to the CD itself a lot, but you'll get what you came for. What this feels like more than anything is an attempt to repurpose a number of the licensed tracks that Activision got their hands on in the production of the game and an experiment in marketing. While I'm curious to see how it works, I have to say that I'm not really rooting for it.

  • garbage. web site doesn't work.

    By AMXE382DCAMQO on 2007-11-08
the point of this product is you get a code inside the CD. you plug that code into a web site. that site generates another code for use on XBOXLive for GH3 DLC.

the first web site (owned by interscope) is junk. at the time of this review, it doesn't work. refuses to register me. This item will be returned.

who cares that you don't even get many tracks to download when the site doesn't work to begin with.

    Garbage.

  • Could use more songs, but a good buy for Xbox 360 Guitar Hero 3 owners
    By A2VWBLWQ75XLVD on 2007-11-02
I wish this album had more songs. The tracks included are mostly great, but there's so much more they could have done with the album. Steve Ouimette's metal version of The Devil Went Down to Georgia is pretty good - the guitar is excellent even if the singer sounds like a nobody. It's a little too long, though.

It does come with a coupon for 3 free downloadable songs for Xbox 360 Guitar Hero 3 though. You have to visit a website, register, follow a confirmation email, then enter the code that comes with the album. Then the site will provide a code to enter in the Xbox 360 dashboard. of the 3 DLC songs, the AFI song Carcinogen Crush is terrible. I normally like them, but this is their most feminine, weak song yet. The Marilyn Manson remix sounds great but opinions are mixed about how it plays. Too fast but still fun, in my opinion. Flyleaf's song is good too.

If you're jonesing for more Guitar Hero 3 songs and want to listen to some of them outside of the game, this is a good purchase overall.

  • What about Wii owner?
    By A66CVMAHY605W on 2008-03-13
I'd like a code for Wii so that we can download some new tunes for GHIII. A few songs would fill in my library. You can buy discs like this off BMG for about $7 delivered.

  • Only worth it for the extra playable songs.
    By A2QBMJ6PPMVVQS on 2007-11-23
The CD is not bad, but it's a lot of music that you probably have on other albums and only 2 real new songs (both of which are covers/remixes). This is worth it however for the exclusive downloadable songs for the Xbox 360 game.

  • Possibly the best of the GH series
    By A1N63TGTK24QGF on 2007-11-30
I must say that I am more than happy with GH3. I was worried at first, with a new studio writing the game, and second with the addition of bosses. After playing GH3 both my worries were quickly relieved. The music chosen for the game is outstanding too. While I still think that GH1 has the best sets, the songs on GH3 are awesome. There were only a few songs that I had never heard before. As far as game play, they have fixed the hammer ons so that solos are easier to play making it a little more like playing on a real guitar. The bosses are actually fun too. If you have problems with them they do give you the option to "wuss" out and continue playing through the sets. I haven't tried online play yet but am sure that it will be fun. If it is like playing the bosses I think it will come down to who gets the attacks first. I highly recommend this game as either a continuation to your GH collection or your first installment.
