  • too much money for too little

I want to like the iRex, but I cant escape the feeling that you should get better software, better performance, and better documentation for a $700 product.
It is great that the iRex is an open source platform. but that shouldn't take resonsibility off the shoulders of iRex team to create useful core applications

  • Finally, a reader which allows you to carry many books!

    By AJFMJ33UZN86F on 2007-11-13
I love to read and I have a bad back; while I will look forward to being able to use the Iliad for other uses, ultimately I wanted a reader that could carry many books without all the tiny cards needed by most of them when they exceed storage capacity after loading one book. After enormous frustration spent trying to learn to use one of the iPaqs (loaded with stuff I had on my palm and therefore without much space for downloads)which called itself an "entertainment" device but had mostly business applications, I finally broke down and decided to buy the Iliad.
Not only did it arrive in a timely manner, it arrived loaded with Mobipocket, so I was in seventh heaven as most good books do use that format.

I have an average of twelve to eighteen books on my Iliad at any one time; I can fit this in my purse (about the size of a trade paperback and slightly less weight. I think it is genius. While I look forward to the promised new uses, I bought this first and foremost to read books for business and pleasure. There is not, to my knowledge, another better product out there for this purpose.

I would have liked a back light as I sometimes travel when I have a room mate who would like to sleep when I want to read; but I think that if it is a choice between battery capacity and a back light, I'll use a book lite of some sort when that is needed.

Perhaps iRex will come out with a nice book light add on that fits all of the cases specifically made for the iLiad? iRex, that *would* be nice!

  • 1989 all over again

    By A378XEODD5IRF0 on 2008-02-28
This is a glorified 1989 IBM PC in the shape of a tablet. Compared to EReader and Amazon, slow and clunky, inversatile and prone to terminal and interminal freezes and ghosting.

And I mean slow. A full minute to boot. Half that to load a book. Poor page rendering.

Far from ready for prime time. Want a book reader, go Kindle or Ereader. Want a mobile portable device, go handheld or tablet PC.

    This is

  • Not significantly better than the Sony PR-505

    By ASJLXOX1VD4DF on 2008-09-22
For the price, you would expect this system to be a WHOLE lot better than the competition. The main advantage this system has over the Sony, or the Kindle is its support of open formats so that you aren't locked into one particular source for books (though Sony has opened up it's content somewhat to allow you to add non-DRM content which has been a big plus -- the Sony store and the LRF format is still provide superior and more enjoyable formats because they were custom made for the reader).

The interface and the feel of the iLiad is much better than the Kindle. However, I still like the Sony better for the solid construction -- not to mention the price. If the iLiad was in the same cost range as its competitors, it would probably be a much more serious contender. However as it stands now, you can buy 2 kindles or a kindle + a sony for what it costs for the iLiad. That will significantly limit the Iliad's ability to cut into the market share that the Kindle and Sony readers are starting to carve out.

  • Thankyou iRex!!

The irex iliad is just what I need. I can carry sooo many books and is open source so you can create applications for it and the are many people who have created some very good applications such as an internet browser and a way to download books without connecting the iLiad to your computer. All in all I love it and could not live without it!
