Be it for comfort, safety, or law, using a cell phone in a car, while driving, requires a hands-free adapter. That's where the Parrot PMK5800 comes into play. The Parrot PMK5800 has the double advantage of being compact and portable, and capable of delivering voice and music over the vehicle's speakers. It contains a high-quality FM stereo transmitter that faithfully retransmits calls and music to the car stereo. The Parrot PMK5800 Bluetooth hands-free kit plugs into the 12V cigar lighter and pairs with your Bluetooth mobile phone. Once paired, the Parrot PMK5800 automatically connects to your phone by Bluetooth: in the blink of an eye, you can make and receive calls in full duplex while leaving your phone in your pocket or bag. Hands-free calls have never been so simple. The Parrot PMK5800 incorporates Parrot's very latest noise reduction and echo cancellation technologies. Sound quality is flawless, whether for phone calls or when listening to your music. Unlike most plug'n play hands-free kits, the Parrot PMK5800 uses its own voice recognition software. You can quickly and safely access your main contacts by saying their names (up to 150 contacts per phone). Kit contains: 1 Parrot PMK5800, 1 jack 3.5 mm : mini-USB cable, 1 adapter ring for 23 mm sockets, 1 user guide. Not recommended By A2N1A7SWBLKZE2 on 2008-01-17
-- SORRY, but i no longer recommend this product as it stopped working. And I have removed my original positive review. Would only give it 1 star or less, but I can't change the original rating. Do not buy if you live in an urban area. SEE NEW COMMENT ABOUT THE ORIGINAL POST
Convenient... but By A151PXLR8A1R05 on 2008-02-28
First of all I'd like to give it 2.5 stars since for its price & functionality, I think it's not that bad.
Below are my point of view base on its advantage & disadvantage:
(I use it on my convertible & pair with Samsung very basic flip model phone. and I never tried it while the top is open.)
*I think before you purchase this, you have to realize this PMK5800 is using your car's FM radio to transmit incoming phone call. So don't expect the sound quality will be as close as the real sound. You will somehow hear some static noise from car speaker since the radio signal issue. That's why it's call "plug & play"...
Advangtage:
1. PMK5800 will ask you to record "voice tag" for each contact and store them in the device, so when you do the voice dial it will correctly find the right contact name. For me it's 70~80% accuracy.
Disadvantage:
1. The microphone is right on the device so it's over 20inch far from you, you might need to speak louder while driving.
I think that's the only drawback I don't like. I wish they can have an extension wired microphone that allow you to adhere somewhere like dashboard, handling wheel or closer.
Don't buy this dog By AXQ0PXVE4OGT0 on 2008-02-13
I rarely got the product to work - it would connect and then disconnect. When it did work, the audio quality was terrible and the volume too low. The menus were too confusing - couldn't figure them out (and I'm an engineer). I tested it with my Verizon XV 6800 Pocket PC phone - and later found from a friend that this company's products have problems with HTC produced Pocket PC's (which manufactured the phone), and this is according to their own technical support people.
Parrot PMK5800 Not as good as I had hoped By A1D3H6X75LAQ8V on 2008-03-03
Item did not have the solid quality I had expected. Found it frustrating and awkward to activate voice recognition and did not find the instructions to be comprehensive. Also found that my Treo crashed each time I paired with the PMK. I have abandoned using it. Bummer.
PMK 5800 cannot be used in populated areas By AHK32OS3XXI3Z on 2008-04-17
PMK 5800 cannot be used in populated areas.
The product is designed and engineered very well. I think this is a very clever idea. Its dimensions fit my car (Audi A4 2006) perfectly. Nice lighted controls, easy setup. PMK 5800 picked up my AT&T Tilt voice recognition with no additional setup.
However, there is a fatal problem in this design - you cannot use it in populated areas with lots of FM stations. I live 60 miles from Boston. Every odd FM channel here is taken. Even channels in between deliver a lot of interference from surrounding odd channels. No matter what you do - you cannot beat the FM environment around you. PMK 5800 has a weak FM transmitter so the better audio system you have the less chance you get any recognizable sound out of PMK 5800. It delivers an overwhelming background noise. Forget MP3 music playback.
Simple design change could alter the future of this product - ability to output through its already existent mini USB port. With this capability PMK 5800 could be integrated through cassette player adapters or directly through vehicle's stereo system.
Unfortunately I have to abandon this product in its current state and do not recommend it to anybody outside Siberia
- Bluetooth A2DP to FM Lighter Plug
     By A26RC7Q3XIGKB3 on 2008-01-24
This thing sounds like garbage and is hard to use. I also bought devices from Satechi and Venturi Mini. The Venturi is better but still complicated to use. The Satechi has the best sound by far and is easy to use. This one was hands down the worst of them all.
- Los Angeles Area

Did not work in Los Angeles due to too crowded FM channels. Had to return it.
- Do not buy this unit
     By AN6SUBOUPCR7I on 2008-05-24
This product is not good in city where there are many radio stations. Audio is not good, lot of static. It is not worth the money. Not specially in NYC.
- Parrot PMK5800
     By A2KDSRGW3A9IWB on 2008-06-28
Installation seemed easy but the unit did not communicate per the directions. It made it a bit harder to configure. Too early to know how satisfied we will be with this type of Phone/Bluetooth use in car.
- Defective Product
     By A23J2DB2YQPEX6 on 2008-08-23
I bought this Parrot PMK5800 when it first came out. I live in the Los Angeles area and there are no FM stations available. This product should have a dedicated station like satelite radio. It was extremely difficult to set up voice recognition. My wife could not use it at all. Her voice could not be recognized by the product. I thought it was defective so I sent it back and recieved a new one. That too did not work. This product is a lemon. They should warn people not to buy if you live in an urban area. I'm partially to blame for not checking for free FM stations before I bought.
