A REAL GOOD TIME! By A1OTGBG66P6K5Y on 2008-03-04
Alan Jackson is one of those Country stars that always shoots straight. No he hasn't been nominated a lot of late for this award or that. But his work is always there and, for true Country fans, his songs are a must and a reminder of just what Country Music is and how it should sound.
GOOD TIME makes the case completely. The album is Jackson at his purest and best. No real experimentation here. No seeming attempts at addressing the ever-shifting expectations of those new to the genre. This is Alan Jackson doing what he does best and, as the title exclaims, listening to this one is a real Good Time!
Every track (and there are seventeen of them!) is a hit in my book. The sixth track on the album, 1976, a look back at a simpler life, came through as my favorite. The song spoke very well to me about a great many things and I found myself reminiscing along with Alan about an important year in my life.
But, hey, as I said, every song here, from the title track to Country Boy to Small Town Southern Man, is Jackson at his finest. He holds nothing back and, as you listen, you'll find yourself realizing, as I did, that Alan Jackson is a no-nonsense Country treasure whom I hope continues to wow us all with his talent and perspective.
THE HORSEMAN
He never fails to deliver!! Time and Time again! By A2E1EFNIZL2FVA on 2008-03-05
As long as I have known about Alan Jackson, I can see him to be like the man he praises, his father Daddy Gene, a family man, traditional, pure and caring.
For his 15th CD, which follows and an impressive awards collection, we can't disregard his longtime producer Keith Stegall, the man behind the scenes. Their collaborative success is attributed to Stegall's claim of their similar background, a small town. The name Stegall is synomous with Alan Jackson.
Alan Jackson is a writer of his music, which means the words speak of the man. You get Alan Jackson, down to earth, genuine, simple, wholesome and with faith. The music here is about the people, his father; Sissy's Song was written for a young lady who worked for Jacksons and died. It wouldn't surprise me if this became a staple song for loved ones. It's not too often that he duets with other female singers, but here he does a song with Martina McBride.
If there is one singer's birthplace I have always known, it is Alan Jackson, born in Newnan, Georgia, and in his wonderful gospel album Precious Memories-Live at the Ryman DVD, he took us back to Newnan. And with the success of that, it is fitting to include a spiritual song that connects with his home, If Jesus Walked the World Today.
You will hear different musical sounds, feel good songs, but what will forever be is that voice!! .....Rizzo
Classic Alan Jackson By A11CHG53SRXLUX on 2008-03-07
"Good Time" is classic Alan Jackson with the added bonus that this disc contains 17 cuts, instead of the typical 10 or 12 songs. More Alan for the money is always a good thing!
As you may or may not know, Alan's last two CDs were a bit different than his previous catalog. "Like Red on a Rose" (four stars) played with a bluesy-jazz sound, while "Precious Memories" (six stars if I could) was a beautiful and inspirational country gospel recording. Both these themes (bluesy-jazz and country gospel) have always been around in Jackson's recordings, but those two CDs highlighted those elements in specific.
In "Good Time," Alan returns to what made him a well-deserved superstar more than a decade ago. There are several songs celebrating simple living, with "Small Town Southern Man" being a mega-hit in the vein of "Home" or "Drive (for Daddy Gene)." "I Still Like Bologna" represents the fun-side of Jackson (a la "Talkin' Song Repair Blues") and there is a nod to his spiritual side in "If Jesus Walked the World Today." The duet with Martina McBride ("Never Loved Before") is also a standout and should be a #1 single soon. The amazing thing is that all of these are original Alan Jackson-written songs!
I don't know if Alan reads these reviews, but I just want to thank him for providing such uplifting songs. I cannot get through "Small Town Southern Man" without shedding a joyful tear for song's namesake. Alan -- your songs bring great inspiration to so many people; we are truly blessed to have you around.
Keepin' It Country!!!!! By A1KKEIN4FKTW7W on 2008-03-04
Thank God there are still artists like Alan Jackson around to keep country music alive. In this album he includes a little bit of everything from fast paced songs, a little blue grass, and most important of all it's all good classic country! His band and himself have never sounded better. This whole album is one big Good Time and you can tell from his excitement in the lyrics that he had a blast making it and I think that you will have a blast listening to it as well.
"Good Time" is a "good" album 3 1/2 stars By AJK5WHV1GW941 on 2008-03-05
Alan Jackson. I have been hearing the name for years, and on my quest to expand my music taste as far as it will stretch, I thought it would benefit me to finally take a listen to someone I had been hearing about for so long. What I heard was not only impressive and entertaining, but this album also heightened my appreciation for country music. Alan Jackson has a unique way of telling a story through song; every singer cannot do that but he does it very effectively and that is one of the things that stood out while I was listening to this album. Also, his lyrics are honest. They are sometimes basic and sometimes profound, but the sincerity in his songs is always apparent. His country tenor exudes plenty of personality and his constant use of the guitar help to give his sound distinction.
"Good Time" is a lengthy piece of work. In fact, I had to listen to it in increments, but do not allow that to be a deterrent for purchasing this album for it is worth your money. Ballads, mid-tempos and up-tempos are all present. Sometimes the production simulates, but that's not a major issue, especially on a 17 track album. "1976" is an amusing number, but enjoyable, nonetheless. Jackson tells his listener that he can remember trying to gain the interest of a young woman and what he did to get her to notice him. I had to chuckle while this song played--it's so cute! Jackson's love songs are magnificent. Martha McBride lends her talents on "Never Loved Before", and together, she and Jackson made magic! Their delivery is amazing, particularly because they harmonized well and the lyrics were touching. "If Jesus Walked the World Today" has Jackson again singing those creative lyrics and telling a story like only he can. "I Still Like Bologna" is great, too. Jackson may be a popular country singer, but he still yearns for the simple things in life such as a sandwich on white bread. See just how honest he is? It's a wonderful thing.
I highly recommend this album! Give this album a chance because Alan Jackson is sure to impress you with his undeniable talent.
Mikeisha's Top 5

2. "Right Where I Want You"

- Really Enjoyable Listening/Toetapping Music
     By A1OX82JPAQLL60 on 2008-05-16
Not by deliberate intention have I become an Alan Jackson fan, but by watching one year his Christmas special on CMT I found him and his husky voice interesting, not to mention his faith and family.
So, during a cable channel surfing moment, I came across again on CMT Alan doing "Small Town Southern Man." So, checked out the CD and continue to play it often and enjoy it much. Not so sure Jesus would be a hillbilly, but each group claims him, don't they.
- Thank Heavens For Alan Jackson
     By A1NV8HZTGKIPXQ on 2008-03-09
There is so much stuff that isn't worth noting in today's country music. Sadly, a lot of that is what's popular and ruling the charts. We should be so glad that Alan Jackson is still here making the best music of it's kind. I like country music, but only get into a select few. Alan is #1 on that list. He always keeps it real. He's traditional modern, if that makes any sense. After experimenting a little lately with the gospel album "Precious Memories", and the more adult, romantic, bluesy "Like Red On A Rose"(which I ended up finding rater brilliant after a few listens. First listen was strange since it was a different sound from him). Alan pretty much gets back to basics with this release, making it a CD that goes back to his roots and does what he does best. Make great country music.
The album starts off with the title track, "Good Time", and you instantly know that you are not just in for a good time, but you are in for some classic Alan. The title track is a classic, fun Alan toe tapper, and it's a smashing way to start the CD off. Fun, energetic, and fun to sing along too. It leads right into the first single, "Small Town Southern Man", which is a classic country/Alan tune. It goes thru the life of a simple man, his family, and love. It's a great song. And with 17 tracks and a run time of 71 minutes, the album is filled with one great song after the other. "Sissy's Song" is a gorgeous ballad. I don't know what significance it has(if any), but it is one of the stand out tracks here on the CD. Elsewhere, Alan grasps the concept of new technology and the way things are now with the witty "I Still Like Bologna", and reminisces about a time in his life when things were changing with "1976", another Alan song that sounds like it should be on the radio.
The album also includes a great, up-tempo duet with Martina McBride called "Never Loved Before". Alan rarely does duets on his studio albums, so this was a nice surprise and a wonderful collaboration. He also has a "It's Five 'O' Clock Somewhere" type feel to the song "Laid Back 'N Low Key", another catchy toe tapper. "If Jesus Walked The World Today" closes out the album on a high note. A fun, catchy mid to upper tempo tune. Really, there isn't a bad track on the album. It's Alan, how could there be?. This is just the tip of the iceberg. "Long Long Way" is a fun, catchy track as well.
In the end, "Good Time" is another stellar release from a country artist who is loved and respected and successful after 18 years for a reason. He sticks to his guns and releases nothing but great material after great material. Great CD after great CD. He never disappoints. Some might think 71 minutes is too long, and 17 songs a few too many, but there shouldn't be any complaints when the material is this good. In my opinion, I think this is one of the top best works Mr. Jackson has done. All I can say to end this review is - keep 'em coming!.
- Alan - Good Ol' Country Boy
     By A2TTIHW27AXI8M on 2008-03-09
This man quickly in his career found his musical niche and has stayed with it throughout. This is a continuation of his many albums. The disc has over 71 minutes of music. He starts off with the title tune 'Good Time' which could become the humming anthem of the spring and summer. Some of top songs including the title are the nostalgic '1976' and 'Right Where I Want You'. Who but Jackson would sing a song titled 'I Still Like Bologna'?? A must have for Jackson and other pure country fans.
- Mr. Jackson hits the nail on the head all 17 times
     By A13CYIBSTSZITG on 2008-03-09
A friend of mine who is 99 44/100% into opera and musicals once said on hearing Strait singing something I forget which in my office that Strait had remarkable voice production and sat down and listened to the rest of the album with considerable pleasure. I think he was a little shocked at himself, rofl, but he's first into the human voice and he allowed himself to be impressed regardless of the country venue, and even got into the rest of the music too. He'd say the same about Alan Jackson, especially THIS collection.
While the remarkably gifted Jackson can always be relied on to stick to the basic tenets of authentic country in tone, words, voice, and backup, sometimes his work is just pure joy at an even higher level than his usual inspired performances of that commitment.
"Good Time" is one of those works, and a five star treat for sure. It contains 17 beautifully presented great songs which as a totality prove his wide vocal range and great lyrics and backup. It's an ideal first Jackson collection for any future Jackson convert. My favorites on this wonderful CD keep shifting around in my head. The most frequent, tho, are the title song, "Right Where I Want You," and "I Still Like Bologna".
Some time ago, a friend's daughter put on his cell phone for him a pickup opening that plays some key lines of Jackson's "Drive" - she's a huge Jackson fan, and turned him into one. I've just bought two copies of the CD, one for him and his daughter to enjoy, and one for me. I also have it on a my 'puter for instant access any time I'm in here, an honor reserved mostly for the best of him and the best of Mr. Strait. As lovely as "Drive" is, my friend's daughter may have 17 conflicts about a possible new selection for his cell, chuckle.
Happy 50th and bless you, Mr. Jackson, and keep on singing whenever you feel like it. We're here humming and foot tapping along with you.
:)
- The Real Alan Jackson Is Back
     By A1F3DFRPGVEUI8 on 2008-05-13
I know more than a few Alan Jackson fans who were concerned that Alan's previous album marked a permanent change of direction for him. That album, produced by Alison Krauss, will likely prove to be the worst selling album in the Alan Jackson catalog so it is good to see that Good Time is a return to form for him. His fans can stop worrying now.
"Good Time" is jam-packed with solid country music and, as usual for an Alan Jackson album, the songs will appeal to a wide audience. There are love ballads for the ladies, a drinking song or two for the guys, some autobiographical songs, and lots of Alan Jackson humor on display.
Alan shares some of his own story on "Small Town Southern Man," the first single from the album, a song in which he pays tribute to his father, and on "1976" in which he describes some of the notable highlights of 1976, the year he met his wife at the local Dairy Queen. One suspects that the lady has a sense of humor after listening to "Nothing Left to Do," Alan's description of "one night in the life" in which he tells us that there's "nothing left to do now that we've done it."
Other examples of Jackson's humorous touch are "I Still Like Bologna," in which he admits to enjoying plenty about the digital age but says that he's not ready yet to give up all of life's simple pleasures and "If Jesus Walked the World Today," in which he imagines that when Jesus comes back it will be as a hillbilly.
"If You Want to Make Me Happy," a traditional honky tonk song, kicks off with a fiddle and closes with a steel guitar. What more can a country fan ask for? How about a hook that advises, "If you want to make me happy, pour me bourbon on the rocks and play every sad song on the jukebox." Does it get any better than that, country fans?
"Good Time" includes a love song duet with the talented Martina McBride, "Never Loved Before," that may be destined to be a single at some point. It is just one of at least half a dozen love songs on the album, some of which are mid-to-up-tempo songs that even the guys will enjoy.
Alan Jackson fans will love this album...and, with seventeen songs on it, Alan is offering us a real bargain. Buy this album. You won't be sorry.
- My Dad, Rufus E.Young was A Sall Town Southern Man
     By A2998B71JYRPMG on 2008-07-06
My daddy was lying on his death bed, On Jan. 29, 2008. He loved and played country music his whole life. The radio was on and Alan Jackson's Small Town Southern Man came on, (it had not been released yet). Daddy took his oxygen away from his face, he ask my brother could he get that song off the internet. Bubba said, he was sure his girls could get it.
Daddy said , " son, I'm fixen to domino." My neices scrambled to get the song on disk for him. He died Jan. 30th at 8:17.Our family gathered and found every picture of dad from 15yrs to 72 trs. My neices put it together . At his funeral we played the video, it was perfect . You see daddy was born to sharecroppers in Southern Arkasas. They only had each other, and were always singing on the front porch.. Dad was plain and simple man, but got involved in a statewide scandel in OK The FBI had to put him under cover and he was th first recipient of The Lewis Peters Award(My brother has the award now.) We went to watch him recieve this award. The only thing he could say was " it wasn't right and my moma nor my daddy would have stood for it" Then he went back to being a carpenter and built a little house. That song came out when he needed it most I believe Alan Jacksons song helped him to know Angels would soon have him by the hand. Rufus Young was just a small town southern man .He was just what the song says and now every child and grandchild with a cell phone has the part where it says--"And he bowed his head to Jesus and he stood for Unkle Sam " all his greatgrand children can even sing "bowed his head to Jesus & stood for UnkleSam." and if we don't have that part we have " He said his greatest contributios is the ones he leaves behind." It is like a gentle reminder of his values, many nights we play guitar and sing at his old trailor, its the way he always communicated with us. Now,Our Family would like to thank Alan Jackson, For giving Daddy that song to tell his family how much he loves us and remind us he'll be in Heaven waiting on us all. It is like We keep his memory alive every time one of our cell phones rings or a baby sings "He bowed his head to Jesus". & we all have the Good Times album too.
Thank-You,
Cathy D. (Young) Mullings

This is a sure winner for "album of the year" next year at the Country Music awards. I wasn't thrilled with his last release but this one makes up for it. I have all of his music. Every song is a winner on this CD. It's good to have somebody that keeps country in country music and NOBODY does it better than Alan.
- Great album !!

I have bought it about two weeks ago.
My opinion is that it is a great album. Classic and lovable Alan Jackson style.
When I gotten "Like Red on a Rose" I was pessimist because I supposed that also Alan moved to pop music style.
I was wrong !! because Alan Jackson country style is alive !!
Thanks a lot Alan for this great album "Good time".

- Alan Jackson " Good Time "
     By AB057MFIO0EGG on 2008-04-15
Been a while coming with this new CD but it is back to the more traditional Alan Jackson that we know, after his last two which I think did not live up to his standards of before, this is certainly a very good easy listening CD and to many country fans who love the more traditional country music I would recommend it .
- Definitely Good Times!

Probably the best Alan Jackson CD I have heard to this date! Glad I purchased it! Definitely helps with "Good Times"!

- Whew, finally back to good ole Alan and his Country Roots!
     By A247O7MU7YKTTL on 2008-03-04
I just picked up Alan's latest album today. As the subject states, we are finally back to some good ole country songs! I was pretty disappointed with his last album to say the least, but the reviews he received were still pretty decent considering the "alternate" singing style he was trying to replicate. I have been a big big fan since the early 90's and I just feel if you have a fan base that expects to hear that cheatin/lyin/leavin/dyin stuff, don't stray from it! Anyway, enough about that...a little about the new album. There are a handful of songs that really get back to the old country that I have been dearly missing for the past couple of years. Songs 2,4,10,14,16,17 really get back to what Alan's country songs should be about steel guitar's and fiddle's along with Alan's ability to make things in life seem simple but meaningful!
- Another Masterpiece!
     By A13MZ5MQWBTP1S on 2008-03-05
Once again Alan Jackson delivers. His title track "Good Time" is easily one of the best songs that I have ever heard. "Long Long Way" brings some fast paced Bluegrass into the album and his duet with Martina Mcbride is Epic. This is a must buy for any hardcore country music lover!
- WONDERFUL ALBUM!!!

I LOVE THIS ALBUM, it's been a long time that i listened a so good country music album! alan jackson is the 1st country singer i listened 51/2 years ago when i began to listen COuntry, and NOW i re discovered this Genuine artist with a impressive album, all the songs have a soul, a wonderful melody and so much songs 17! wow that's rocks!
- Welcome Back Alan!
     By A392H2SOTJ8NHY on 2008-03-09
Alan makes a nice comeback with this album. I'm a big country music fan and Alan Jackson is one of my all-time favorites. His last two albums, in my opinion, have been subpar. I didn't care for "Precious Memories" or "Like Red on A Rose". However, I think "Good Time" is fantastic. Just about every song on this album could be a hit. My favorites are: Good Time, Small Town Southern Man, Country Boy, 1976, Long Long Way, I Still Like Bologna, Never Loved Before, This Time, Laid Back n' Low Key, and If Jesus Walked the World Today.
Alan composed all 17 songs on this CD, which is slightly uncommon for Alan to do. However, I think it gave him a chance to show off his true talent in both singing and songwriting. Across 17 songs, Jackson pays tribute his personal history and his view of the world. He always reaches in his past and allows the all fiddle-and-steel arrangements to shine through in each of the tracks (especially in the song Long Long Way). If you're a country fan yet alone an Alan Jackson fan, this CD must be in your collection.
- Great CD!

Alan Jackson didn't let me down with this CD. He continues to prove he is a living legend!
- Bring Us Back Home, AJ!
     By A1NQ5ZJRO9FDFJ on 2008-03-13
I know this is a WAY overused cliche, but I am really growng tired of today's country music. Over-produced, over-hyped, over-sung, and overly-slick. I was once one of those who regularly bought CD's (or tapes, ha!) when they debuted. No more. Now, I have to go onto sites like Amazon to preview what I want to buy, because I don't want to waste my money on disappointing music.
Alan Jackson is one that I still regularly listen to and buy when I get the chance. "Good Time" doesn't disappoint - at all. Alan is still at ease with his mostly-traditional sound here, and still sounds as much at ease with a rocking guitar as he does with a fiddle and steel guitar.
Highlights include the title track, "Good Time", which I also saw him sing live in San Antonio in February. The song definitely lives up to the title. Others include "1976", which is just simply a great little song, "Long, Long Way", which a traditional uptempo song with GREAT lyrics, "Listen To Your Senses", which has a bluegrass feel to it and is a beautiful love song, and lastly, "If You Want To make Me Happy". This song is a great little tear in your beer, listen to the steel guitar cry and fiddle weep, feeling sorry for myself song that would sound at home in some remote honky tonk in rural Georgia, Texas, or Tennessee. This song is very traditional, and I can only think of George Strait being able to successfully pull this song off.
In Summary - great singer, great album. Alan Jackson continues to present himself as a leader in the industry, all the while staying true to his roots and the roots of country music. All true fans of this genre should be proud of their Georgia Boy on this one. Great job, Alan - thanks for bringing us home.

If you are a mainstream listener this CD is a shure choice.
With 17 no. Alan and the recording corporation gives value you value for the money.
I feel that I never do something wrong, when I order an Alan Jackson album.
The one exception was "Like Red On A Rose", but I think it is the "masters" right to do something different and new.
Keep going.

Alan Jackson has done it again. This is one of the best CD's I've heard. I love Denise doing some of the singing. Their voices meld together beautifully. Would like to see more music from both of them. The lyrics are real and down to earth. The way country music used to be. Buy this CD!

I have enjoyed this album from start to finish. This is about as country as country music can get nowadays and with Alan singing it doesn't get too much better than this. This album was as comfortable to me as curling up in bed and reading a good book that you can't take your eyes off until the end. Great job Alan!
- Great Time
     By AREEFN56FVWYX on 2008-03-05
If Alan Jackson ever "left us", well he's certainly back. This is a great cd. Picked it up the first day it came out. I saw there was 17 songs, which is huge these days, and never previewed it before hand (except for his single Small Town Southern Man) and it is just a great cd. True country music at its' finest! I hope he a George Strait never leave us. Great sing-along songs in "Country Boy" and the title truck "Good Time", a little bluegrass in "Long, Long Way", comedy in "I Still Like Bologna" and a tear jerker in "Sissy's Song" with all kinds of other greats. If you like Alan Jackson, just go out and buy this immediately. Trust me.
- The Wait Is Over And It's All About The Musicians
     By AFQ0DZTDSQ1VY on 2008-03-05
Ok,Alan. You're forgiven. Putting out this CD after making a pop CD (with a great gospel one in the middle) is what Alan needed. I know Red On A Rose appealed to some people but not me. For one thing, none of the musicians that Keith Stegall and Alan use on all the albums before were on it. These are the best musicians in Nashville and it was a mistake not using them on Red On A Rose. But they're back on Good Time. Brent Mason, Paul Franklin, Stuart Duncan, Pig Robbins and the rest of the normal guys are here on this CD. Really, it's the musicians that make this record shine. Yes, Alan has a great voice but he needs these guys behind him to make the sound we're grown to love since Chasin' That Neon Rainbow in 1989. Buy this CD if you love traditional country music that we've come to expect from Alan.
