  • Finally!!! Affordable Capacity!!!

    By A2CE6YQUFWU8O2 on 2008-01-07
Transcend 16GB SecureDigital SDHC Class 6 Card with Bonus SD Card Reader

Best thing about vacations is that they give you the perfect reason to go out and buy new toys!!! I'm heading to Costa Rica for 8 days of adventure and after looking fondly at my Canon SD850IS, the first thing I thought was, "I'm going to need more space". The one mistake I made when I purchased my 2GB SD card was underestimating how much video I'd take with this little camera (which this camera is surprisingly good at).

With the activities we have planned for CR, I needed to be certain that I'd have enough memory to capture all those crazy adventures (Volcano hikes, zip lines, canopy tours, white water rafting, scuba diving etc...)

    * So how much does it store?
At max resolution here are the capacities:
Pictures: 8MP at Superfine resolution: 4,496 pictures
    Video: 640x480, 30FPS, 127 minutes and 38 seconds!!!
30 seconds of continuous shooting with no flash at max res: 34 pictures (Canon claims 1.4 shots per second). Please note, I got identical results with the my Sandisk Extreme III 2GB SDHC

    * Transfer Performance
Test Bed: 340MB Video File, USB hub, on my desktop (AMD X2)...Each test was repeated 5 times and the average taken (what can I say, I'm OCD :D)

Using the supplied SD card reader: 17 seconds (20 mb/sec)
Connecting directly to the camera: 50 seconds (6.8 mb/sec - i.e. in line with the Class 6 rating)
Using the SD card reader and going through my laptop (IBM T41P): 29 seconds (11.7 mb/sec)

In other words, depending on your hardware it meets and/or exceeds the speed rating.

I also own a Sandisk Extreme III 2GB SDHC card, which boasts a faster transfer rate. The only test above that it performed better in were transfers to my laptop (22 seconds vs 29). It would appear based on the transfer rates that the camera was the limiting factor, but with the supplied SD card reader, that limitation is a non issue.

I'm lucky - I found this card on a lark, and the day after I bought it, the price rose $30. Considering this product was announced Nov '07 and just released, not to mention the competitor's are priced about $50-$100 more, the price I paid for it was just too good to pass up.

    So with all that said:
    Pros:
    - Price (~150mb/$)
    - Performance is in line (and meets or exceeds) with its class rating
    - 2 HOURS of VIDEO WOOO!!!!

    Cons:
    - It's new and unproven. The only question that remains is whether or not it will hold up over time...if anything changes in the next month...I'll let you know :)

    Enjoy!!!

  • It may be Class 6, but it's still slow

    By A1C7CJHPAO5UO1 on 2008-05-13
I bought this Transcend 16GB memory card to use in a Canon HF100 camcorder. I think Amazon even recommended the pair. And the price was right.

Unfortunately, this card is slow. When I turn on my Canon camcorder, I have to stare at a message saying "READING THE CARD" for 10-15 seconds before I can take a picture. The wait to take a movie is better, but still 4-5 seconds.

I tried my old 2GB Sandisk Extreme III card, and it is at least TWICE AS FAST, so I may have to send this Transcend back. Waiting 3-4 seconds is OK, but 10-15 is awful. I'm missing shots. I also need to see if the Transcend can keep up with 17 Mbps video mode. It claims to be "Class 6" speed, but maybe it's slow at random accesses? Frustrating.

  • Truly Droolworthy Technology

    By A1PBZS3AQB2IAB on 2008-03-22
Transcend offers a great combination -- a 16 GB SDHC card and a truly compact card reader -- for an extremely competitive price. There are 16 gig SDHC cards on the market for more than three times the money.

The reader also allows me to interchange the 16 gig card with a Transcend 8 gig SDHC card that I bought separately, which increases the versatility of both items.

    But wait, there's more. ;)

I own an ASUS EEE PC computer (Asus Eee PC 4G (7 Screen, 800 MHz Intel Celeron Processor, 512 MB RAM, 4 GB Hard Drive, Linux Preloaded) Pearl White) that comes with a built-in SDHC slot to enhance on-board hard disk capacity. With the 8 gig Transcend card, and the 16 gig card and the reader it comes with, I can use both if I want to slap 24 super-portable, solid state gigs of fast memory on my EEE when I'm traveling. I've run both cards through the SDHC slot without problem, and using the card reader, I've also tried both from all 3 of the built-in USB slots and from USB hubs attached to each of the 3 USB slots as well.

Bottom line? They work great -- and especially with the ASUS EEE PC.

Good job, Transcend -- highly recommended.

  • Fast and stable. You may have to download KB934428 HotFix from Microsoft to make it work in your integrated card reader.

    By A1A5KUIIIHFF4U on 2008-02-13
Fast and stable. You may have to download KB934428 HotFix from Microsoft to make it work in your integrated card reader.

( I can't provide the web link to the HotFix because Amazon filters web links, you can search for KB934428 at Google and get a direct link for download / you'll have to validate your copy of Windows before download)

We don't use this card in a camera, we use it to back up or XP system partitions when using Ghost or Acronis and our throughputs have improved tremendously compared to imaging the %systemdrive% to even another internal SATA drive.

The included adapter is a bonus and it has an orange status light to display read activity.

    Five Stars !

  • do not buy from thememstore

    By AZMOM619PTO5B on 2008-03-21
i apologize for the one star rating, i have this card and it works fine in my camera, so i ordered another one for my zen through amazon from thememstore and the day for delivary came and went, i didnt mind the original 3 week wait for the card. finally i sent thememstore an amazonmail, then i get a letter from amazon saying my order was canceled without telling me why.

the reason i am here writing this is that since i didnt get the item i cant post the negative comment in the store area and now the price has gone up since my original purchase. dump thememstore

  • HiDef Video
    By A3G7IWZ2RJGFVB on 2008-03-15
Have to give this one all five stars. I've been recording video with a Panasonic HDC-SD9 camcorder at the highest resolution 1920x1080 @ 60i, thats 60 interlaced frames per second, I really expected this flash card to give me problems because of the low price, but to its credit I've been able to record approx. 2 hours of nonstop video with no hicups. Very solid product, I currently own two of them.

  • Transcending SanDisk
    By A3VX6DDDK0681Z on 2008-06-14
I use SanDisk Extreme III (Lumix FZ50) in my professional work, and Ultra II (Lumix TZ5) in my snapshots and most vacations. At the time, the 8 Gb was excellent, and could hold more pix than I would ordinarily take. Wanted to try a 16 Gb, and couldn't find an Extreme, though it was listed, so when I saw the Transcend, thought I'd try it. A friend had the 4 and 8 Gb, and liked them. So I bought, and so far, though it doesn't officially have the weather capabilities of the Extreme, I can't tell the difference in speed of r/w, and find no difference in pic quality. For significantly less money, for non-wilderness/severe weather use, the Transcend appears to be every bit as fast and as good as the SanDisk. The card reader it came with is not quite as nice as the SanDisk's, but so far (3 months of use) works just as well. The 16 has more capacity than I've been able to fill so far, but that just means I don't have to switch cards midstream, and can take marginal pix in addition to primaries, and edit what doesn't come out well. I will consider Transcend along with SanDisk in the future, and unless there is a clear technical advantage, will go with Transcend's lower price.

  • Watch out, cheap memory may come back to BITE YOU!! I/O Error!
    By AVA86Z4N3858X on 2008-05-05
    Yes,

This producted worked well for the first two months. Then, today, I tried to upload my Kentucky derby photos and videos and I got the infamous "I/O reading error". Basically means, the card is broken.

I tried EVERY means to reformat the drive. From PC reformat to manual CMD reformat, nothing worked!!

Thank goodness there are great memory card recovery programs, or else my precious Derby moments would have been lost, but WATCH OUT, don't get stuck in the safe mode of thinking. This error may come back and bite you .

Spend the extra money and get a good brand.

  • Works fine - has lifetime replacement warranty
    By ARMEXAFAJOAUG on 2008-06-07
I've used this with my Canon HF-100 for about a month so far. No problems at all.

  • Beware - Not as described!!
    By AY1NUCXXJ5WD5 on 2008-10-03
While this product works fine, it was not what I purchased! So watch out! What is shown in the photos is a 16GB TRANSCEND SDHC card, in a nice little protective case, PLUS a TRANSCEND SDHC Reader -- packaged together, by Transcend. What I received was a 16 GB Transcend SDHC card by itself -- not even with the case for it!, and some cheap, made-in-China no-name (DigitalMatex?) reader in a separate pack. I feel I paid too much for this card, based on the fact that not only did it not include the shown protective case, but I did not even get the Transcend brand reader that was meant to go with it! Very deceptive. Watch out.

  • Great price, great product
    By A25RNJJ3HG1T4P on 2008-04-07
Bought one of these for my new Canon VIXIA HF100 AVCHD camcorder.. works like a charm with that unit. Just wish I could buy another one right now, as they're completely out of stock. Love having the USB reader as well, very handy!

  • Works great on my Canon SD1000!!!
    By A3LAX99KOCGABI on 2008-04-16
Great product so far. Took it out of the packaging and stuck it in my SD1000 and started snapping. Now at M3 (1600x1200), I get something like 20000 pictures on the card, although the counter will only go up to 9999. At the full 8mp L setting,3072x2304) it stores ~5200 pics.

As far movie mode, 127 minutes!!!! HOT!!!!

  • Good Flash
    By A2GJRTG0D3M7DG on 2008-03-10
16 gigs, Class 6 speed, works great in my HD video camera. Also note SDHC doesn't work in my old regular SD card readers. This comes with a nice little USB 2.0 card reader that will plug into any USB 2.0 hub so you can read the card almost anywhere. Nice.

  • works as expected
    By A2R5QQBR79XURA on 2008-05-08
I picked up a pair of these through a deal on another website. I use them in my new Canon HF-100 camcorder. They're SD cards, it's hard to 'review' them because they operate pretty much all the same. The card itself seems to be made properly. It's not 'indestructible' but doesn't seem any more or less fragile than any other cards.

The reader is a little unusual in that the SD card sticks out the side of it, not the end. This won't be a problem for most folks but it may be worth considering, especially if your USB ports are jammed up close together or alongside other occupied connections. The back of a PC might be a bit tight if there's lots of cabling already there. YMMV, of course.

If you get a good price on it (mine were around $60 each) then it's worth considering.

  • BEWARE! AMAZON USES HYBRID DHL + USPS TO SHIP!
    By A1S1BJFTA644TU on 2008-05-15
The card was ordered over a week ago and has not arrived. Paid for 3-5 day shipping. We tracked the order and found out that it was delivered NOT to us, but to our state Postal Service!!! From there, DHL said, because of a crazy partnership between DHL and the USPS, the USPS will dilly dally its way toward us. We have to wait another FEW DAYS!!!! So when you pay for shipping, BEWARE!!! You are not getting the card until AFTER a SECOND shipping period determined by your state Postal Service!!
Thanks, AMAZON, for a crappy shipping job.

  • Transcend 16GB SDHC
    By A1NT6MKIJATX56 on 2008-05-20
Have used this card several times with the Canon HF100. So far so good. No issues. At first I wanted to go with a reliable name brand like the Sandisk Ultra II card or Kingston but these were so expensive. After reading the reviews for this card used specifically with the HF100, I took the chance. Price helps you overcome a lot of qualms about things very quickly. The card is class 6 which has translated into fast speeds. I also bought an 8 GB Transcend card. Do yourself a favor, spend a little more and stick with the 16 GB cards (for convenience). Like I mentioned before, no issues with reliability and stability so far. I'm pleased.

  • DOA
    By AAJPPSAUBPKOB on 2008-07-28
This card arrived DOA. I'd expect a certain percentage to be DOA, but it may hint at a larger problem if more people report. Card reader seemed fine.

  • Don't Buy! Saved Images Just DISAPPEAR From This Card
    By AZLHS6YHI1FKZ on 2008-09-22
This card loses images. I've had it now for 2 months and it will randomly lose images stored on it. I use it for pictures and because it loses information randomly, I transfer all pictures I take to my hard drive immediately. Having to download so frequently out of fear of losing the images makes having a 16gb drive far less useful.

The reason you get a drive so big (if you're doing photography) is so that you don't have to upload so frequently.

I'm disappointed in this product and would not recommend.

  • Exactly what I expected
    By A2BVHFXJGEB8FO on 2008-06-02
Arrived in time. Product is exactly what I expected. Worked perfectly with Canon HF100 Camcorder.

  • works great with the canon hf100 camcorder
    By A3O5UC0USMEUTR on 2008-06-09
I'm not sure how to review a memory card - except to say that it works great :)

I've had it for a couple months now, and haven't had any problems

  • Huge number of photos
    By A3N622UGVQ0JWL on 2008-06-18
I bought this card to go into a new canon xsi. I had previously used a 2GB card and was using it for sports shots with continuous shooting. I could get two games on the card. When I installed the 16GB card and looked at the number of available shots in standard shooting mode it registered over 4000 shots possible. You could travel for six months and not fill this card. Worth paying the extra to ensure I never run out of space. Also go for class 6, a must for continuous shooting as the transfer rate is really fast. The reader is a nice touch if you are travelling and want to share on a friends computer.

  • Terrific Card!
    By A1FUXTGD90KMOB on 2008-07-08
I bought the card and reader to use with a new Canon FS100 camcorder and it works perfectly. I have had no problems with the card, it is fast and it loads on both my Vista Laptop and IMac.

  • Excellent Value - but be careful where you order it from...
    By AOEAD7DPLZE53 on 2008-10-19
I purchased this package (Transcend 16GB SDHC CARD with Compact Card Reader) from Amazon.com about two months ago. The SD card was meant to be used in my Canon S5 camera. But I soon discovered that it works extremely well with the included card reader as an USB flash drive - much larger and faster than my SanDisk 4GB Cruzer Micro. So I ended up using it mainly for data backup and transfer between my laptop and desktop computers.

So far, the card has proven to be fast and reliable. As first I was skeptical about Transcend's speed rating of 'class 6', which means minimum 6MB/S when writing. But my own benchmark results (see Customer Images) showed that this card is capable of writing typical photo files at 10.5MB/S - nearly twice its specified minimum data transfer rate. Just for reference, the Sandisk 8GB EXTREME III claims a faster speed of 20MB/S, but it costs about twice as much per GB.

Based on my favorable experience, I recently ordered the same package from TheMemStore. To my surprise, this time I received only the SD card and no card reader (check my Customer Image to see the two different packages). Another difference I noticed is that the first package from Amazon was made in Taiwan, whereas the second one from TheMemStore was made in China. Perhaps this explains why several reviewers have reported poor reliability with this card?

Considering its low cost and respectable speed, this Transcend card is an excellent buy. But please, make sure that you order it from a reputable vendor only.

  • Gives my Lumix DMC-LZ50 camera almost a dangerous amount of storage!
    By A2UTZ4O5E2W4DK on 2008-03-21
In that I'll stay out taking pictures longer that used to be the case! That was when a one or two GB card was the limit. Now, for all practical purposes there is no limit on photography. Hours of VGA widescreen video too. Why upload at a cybercafe in Paris? Just take all you want and bring it home in one chip. Needless to say, there were no problems in my modern PDA and cameras that use this. The converter for older USB protocols on old computers is a lifesaver, too. I've had a few Trancend SD cards and they've all worked fine. Recommended.

  • so far, pretty good.
    By A2C6W9EAZDZK79 on 2008-03-28
i waited awhile before submitting this, but its been a few months now and this card seems to work great. i use it to store music files and now i have enough music to last quite sometime. very fast, stable, and works flawlessly with my Cowon d2. 4gb player. highly reccommended.

ps: ( and yes, the D2 does intergrate SDHC card contents with internal library.)

  • works great, no problems
    By A2B0I6J1WJNE7T on 2008-06-02
I bought this for a pocket PC (ASUS A696). The device sees 15.3 GB - oodles of space for software, music, videos, etc. It works great. No problems with speed. The card reader also comes in handy; it works great too.

  • Avoid headache
    By ALN8HTTM40HIZ on 2008-06-04
I thought it was nice to have a large storage device.
But I was wrong with this one. the product work for a few days and that is it. The card reader is still working though, but the SD memory is dead. I try the reader with other card and it work fine, as soon as I put this 16GB card in the computer doesn't even realize that I have plug it in.
Well, it just one bad device that I have bought.
Learn from me, stay away from this device. if you don't like headache.

  • Worked well - over 2 hours of recording time
    By AWQTJ1BO1JM3H on 2008-06-08
I recommend this if you have HF-100 or HF-10 camera. It's a good buy for the price.

  • Great Capacity, Great Price
    By A10Y058K7B96C6 on 2008-06-30
I usually purchase Sandisk or Lexar memory cards, but I needed some major capacity for my new Canon TX1 and the other manufacturers had not come out with a 16GB version or were priced too high. So at first I doubted the quality of the Transcend 16GB SDHC card, but I have to say all of my concerns have been lifted away. I will likely buy more Transcend products in the future.

The TX1 can eat up memory, but these cards keep me going. I bought two of them. They work great with camera and the transfer speed on downloads is great. Highly recommended.

  • Lasted for only two months
    By A2IBX6J2U8HTZD on 2008-08-16
The card worked fine with my Canon HF10 camcorder, but after only 2 moths the camcorder was not able to recognize the card anymore, even trying to reformat it. I've tried to plug it with the USB reader and others SD readers in 3 computers, but nothing solved the problem. I'd rather pay more for a traditional brand to avoid headaches of loosing important files. The USB card reader works fine, nothing to complain.
