Apples to Apples Party Box - The Game of Hilarious Comparisonsx$19.00
    (17 reviews)
Best Price: $26.99 $19.00
Apples to Apples is the game of hilarious comparisons! It's as easy as "comparing apples to apples"... just open the box, deal the cards, and you're ready to play. Select the card from your hand that you think is best described by a card played by the judge. If the judge picks your card, you win that round. And everyone gets a chance to be the judge. Each round is filled with surprising and outrageous comparisons from a wide range of people, places, things and events. Includes over 1,000 cards. Apples to Apples is an award-winning party game that will have everyone laughing. We had a blast playing this game and think it is a perfect game for a "board game night" with friends and family. It is quick to set up, easy to learn, challenging, and a whole lot of fun.
The party box includes over a thousand cards for many card combinations. View larger. |
Unexpected and funny comparisons make the game fun to come back to again and again. View larger. | | What We Think Fun Factor:
Durability: (what this means)
The Good: Quick set up; inspires quick thinking and creativity; fun for whole family
The Bad: Not as fun without at least five players; subject matter targeted for mid-teens and older
In a Nutshell: Quick-paced board game requires just a minute to set up and will have everyone laughing for hours | At a Glance Ages: 12 and up Requires: At least four players | | | Smart, Award-Winning Fun Apples to Apples has won numerous awards including "Party Game of the Year" by Games magazine and "Mensa Select" by Mensa International. And for good reason: it involves quick thinking, humor, and strategy. For teens, the game teaches them to think about how different things can be compared to one another and how analogies are formed. One of our criticisms is that although the game states that it is designed for ages 12 and older, many of the subjects are clearly for older teens. Hilarious Comparisons and Analogies The name of the game is a play on the phrase "apples to oranges," and the game is about making comparisons between different things. General game play is as follows: players are dealt red cards which have a noun printed on them, and the judge (a different player in each turn) draws a green card on which an adjective is printed and places it for all players to see. Each player then chooses a red card they are holding that they think best describes the green card. The judge then decides which adjective she likes best. The fun is in the variety of unexpected comparisons people make, sometimes apt, funny, creative, or simply absurd. For example: people might match "Awkward" with "Oil Spills," "My First Kiss," "Dandruff," and "Gold Chains. " Or: "Painful" with "High School Reunions" and "Regis Philben. " Strategy comes into play since, because each player takes turns being the judge, you begin to pick up on the preferences of each player and tailor your choices accordingly. Players can also try variations on the basic game play. For example, instead of choosing the most apt comparison, players might try choosing the red card that is least like the green one. These variations keep the game fresh and interesting every time. Conversation Kick Starter Part of the fun is in standing up for your choices. For instance, you might discuss why you think "Regis Philben" is painful, or segue into a discussion of the embarrassing situations you got into on your first day of school, or your first kiss. Apples to Apples excels as an ice breaker and promotes a good amount of social interaction, as many conversations will be kick started thanks to these little cards. More Players, More Fun Although the box states that the game is playable with just four players, we found that the game is a lot more fun when there are at least five or six players. This increases both the frequency of funny answers and also requires players to refine their strategy a little more. Once we got going, hours passed, and it was only the lateness of the hour that reminded some of us that we had to go home. This Party Box set comes with more than 1,000 cards total, and will entertain for a long time. Additional expansion sets are available to further increase the variety of word combinations. What's in the Box 756 Red Apple Cards, 252 Green Apple Cards, card tray, quick play rules.

Great Fun!!! By A1EKS76AHXH2T6 on 2008-02-22
What a great way to spend an evening with family and friends! It's fun to see how others will respond, sometimes dead-on, other times way off the mark! It's such a simple game anyone can play it. We campaign for our answer to be picked, which does take away from the anonymity, but it's so much fun!
Fun family and friends game By A829OFH4XPYB1 on 2008-06-25
This is a great game, easily learned and played by younger players. Since it's hard to know what a game is like without knowing how to play it, im going to try to explain it too you.
Its simple: each player has seven RED cards with names of people, places or things on them. A GREEN card is randomly picked from a pile and set on the table: each GREEN CARD has a characteristic of an object or person, such as "Graceful" "Wild" "Neat" "Ancient", to name a few. Each person has to pick the RED card (out of their seven cards) that best matches with the GREEN card on the table, like the "pushups" red card would fit well with the "exhausting" green card, etc. Once everyone has placed one red card in the middle with the green card, a judge (assigned at the beginning of each round, so you take turns) picks the card that they think matches best, and the person that had that card gets a point. What makes this game fun is, like a previous reviewer said, is that there are no wrong answers, you can pick whatever you want. There also 5 or six variations to the game which can be VERY fun. May I warn you though, this game cannot be played with less than three players, and isn't really fun unless you have 5 or more, so bring friends over to try it out. I hope my review and explanation helped anyone considering buying it..
No losers game By ARLX7TH3H416N on 2008-02-22
This game is unusual since there are no WRONG answers! There are better and worse answers, but it is all a matter of opinion. If you have shy persons who hesitate to play a game because they are afraid they can't remember the right answer (like Trivial Pursuit), this is a game they will enjoy.
Great 'Gettin-to-know-you' Game! By A2MHKAH6Y2XK2L on 2008-05-27
We love this game. It is a great game to play when you want to get to know people better. And its very good at getting the conversation moving. We love it.
Fun Party Game! By A6GCPE70DT7LL on 2008-07-17
We played this party card game at a family function. It works well when there are several people. I gave it a 4 for fun, because it is a card game, which is maybe less fun than say...a computer game. I gave it a 3 for educational value, because the point of the game is fun, not learning...however learning will happen in spite of the game. I only gave it a 3 for durability, because the cards could possibly become lost or damaged in the same manner that any other card came cards would. They're not made out of anything more durable than ordinary laminated card stock.
Overall this is a really fun game for anyone who can read and has a fairly good working vocabulary. We compensated for the younger members who played with us by pairing an adult with very young readers.
I bought two of these and sent them to relatives so no one would have to carry the game from house to house.
Anyone who wants to shut off the TV and computer and have interactive games between PEOPLE will love this.
- Fun! Hilarious! Highly Recommend

This is easily one of the best (if not THE best) new game of the last few years. it's easy to play, great for all ages, and the game can be modified a number of ways to make it more interesting! I've played this with a few people who doubted it could be any fun - and everyone who's played it has turned around the recommended this to their friends! Buy this game!
- Adult fun for all education levels

We've been playing this game for years and have 4 expansion sets. It's the first game to be suggested when friends are over because no one stresses out over it (no skill involved, no feeling stupid). It gets us talking and we just have a blast and laugh. We've created our own cards too.
We played this with a 10-12 year old boy who wasn't the best reader and he had some difficulty just by not knowing the older pop culture and historical things on the cards. Which became a great learning experience for him.
We have Apples to Apples Jr for our 7 year old daughter now and I can't wait to play it with her!
This is NOT a game for less than 3 people and I'd recommend it for at least 4 people. The larger the group, the more boisterous the game can get!

It's a good game to play with friends when you want to chit-chat at the same time. Not much thinking involved but lots of fun to learn how your friends think. Easy to learn even for the non-game player.
- Infinite fun

Apples to Apples is great!! The game is literally self regenerating. Each time you play the game is different. Lots of yelling, debating, convincing, and laughing. You learn a lot about people through this game.
Everyone is dealt seven red apple cards which contain a word. The word could be a name like Madonna, a place like New York, a thing like Iron, or a personal thing like "My Hair". The goal is to win the green apple cards, but the key to getting the green apple card is by best describing the green apple card with one of your red cards.
For example: A reader reads a green apple card reading, "soft", then everyone proceeds to pick out one of their red cards and place it face down. The reader then picks up all the red cards that are face down on the table and then reads them aloud: Card 1 "Feathers", card 2 "babies", card 3 "wind", card 4 "my skin". The reader has to choose which of these he feels is best defined as "soft" and the whole time you have players around the table making arguements for or against certain cards to try and sway the reader.
It is loads of fun, and its new every time by virtue of the combinations of cards as well as the players. Since readers are different every time, opinions are different every time and so is your chances of your word being chosen. Not to mention that Apples to Apples also makes refills just in case.

I absolutely love this game! When you try to explain the rules to someone who hasn't played it before it doesn't sound very fun, but once you start playing you don't want to stop. I was playing it with my family and my 21 year old brother and two 15 year old cousins TURNED OFF THEIR VIDEO GAMES to come play with us!

This is great for people in groups. How well do you know those around you? If you don't know them well, then can you guess how they might respond to your phrase? Mad-libs for adults with an open-ended nature. Make sure to read the card captions - so funny.
