Matthew McConaughey and Kate Hudson go for the gold (and the diamonds emeralds and rubies) as a just-divorced couple who bicker and banter their way through an adventure- and laugh-packed undersea treasure hunt. McConaughey is Finn in love with his ex (Hudson) and in deep with gangster Bigg Bunny. After eight years of searching Finn gets a clue to the whereabouts of the Queen?s Dowry a fabulous fortune that mysteriously disappeared in the Caribbean in 1715. Now all he has to do is get the gold get the girl and get going before Bigg Bunny gets him. Directed by Andy Tennant (Hitch) Fool?s Gold glitters with danger action romance comedy great one-liners ? and a great time to be had by all!Format: DVD MOVIE Genre: COMEDY/ROMANTIC COMEDY UPC: 085391139997 Manufacturer No: 113999

The "gold" of the title refers to an elusive pirate's booty, but it just as easily could mean the sun-washed glistening shores of Florida, or the sumptuously tanned bodies of its appealing stars, Kate Hudson and Matthew McConaughey. The whole film is awash in golden highlights, and the scenery and cinematography make the experience akin to taking a tropical holiday. Hudson and McConaughey reprise the chemistry they first exhibited in How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days, sparking and tangling and kvetching, while all the while the audience knows, of course, they adore each other and are perfect for each other. McConaughey is a dreamer, on the trail of a sunken pirate's treasure, and Hudson his now-ex-wife, a historian who prefers life to be a little more sedate. McConaughey, as Finn, delivers impassioned speeches to Hudson, as Tess, saying, "You want history? It's in the ocean, lady!" Before you can say Romancing the Stone, Tess and Finn are grudgingly reunited in search of the booty. If the plot doesn't contain many surprises, the froth of the stars' chemistry is amiable and makes for a perfect date movie. Scuba divers may find McConaughey's antics below the surface to be wildly unbelievable and usually fatal, but in the end viewers will root for him to surface, and recapture the heart of his lady love. --A.T. • No shirt, no shoes, no brainer

    By A37PV5GMP2ILJC on 2008-06-08
    Short Attention Span Summary (SASS):

    1. Matthew McConaughey goes shirtless
    2. Kate Hudson channels her mom
    3. He's irresponsible
    4. She's determined
    5. They're divorced
    6. They're going treasure hunting
    7. You can guess the ending before watching the opening credits

In other words, there's nothing new about this light and ditzy treasure hunting romp that plays heavily on stereotyping and McConaughey's shirtless bod.

The legend behind the treasure is interesting enough. Forty chests of gold and jewels, destined to be a dowry fit for an eighteenth century queen, was lost without a trace during the hurricane season of 1715. Finn (McConaughey) and Tess (Hudson) had been searching for it for years, until an accidental discovery clues them in that they're finally on the right track.

With the exception of Donald Sutherland, the movie loses momentum whenever the supporting actors are on-screen and the burden of the caricaturized characters sink the movie even deeper than the plotline.

The action scenes were good, especially at the end, and although there is violence, most of it is off camera. A couple of swear words and a few naughty scenes make for a PG-13 movie that should be found guilty of breach of promise.

  • Surprised by how much I enjoyed it

    By A3GAY5VH2LDFWK on 2008-03-16
"Fool's Gold" Directed by Andy Tennant and Screen play by John Claflin.

Unlucky treasure hunter Benjamin Finnegan (Mathew McConaughey) has been on the trail of a treasure for years at the expense of everything including his marriage to soon to be ex-wife Tess Finnegan (Kate Hudson). Finn has recently uncovered a new clue that has reinvigorated his desire to find the treasure however it took the destruction of his last and most important possession, his boat, to find this clue. His debts to the islands local "Gangster" have been called in because it has been discovered that Finn has no means by which to repay what he owes. Finn winds up getting Tess re-interested in hunting for the treasure with his new clue and with the help of Tess's new boss multi millionaire Nigel Honeycutt (Donald Sutherland), they just may have a chance of finding it.......

I actually enjoyed "Fool's Gold". It should be obvious that this isn't a movie that is seeking Oscar Gold but merely something intended to be fun to watch. As far as the mood or tone of the movie I would say it is a cross between or somewhere in the middle of "How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days (Full Screen Edition)" and "Sahara (Widescreen Edition)" or a less serious "Into the Blue (Widescreen Edition)" and if you like any of those you will likely like this as well.

The Good: There were some enjoyable if slightly hokey comedic moments. The story, although full of plot holes, was enjoyable. Mathew McConaughey and Kate Hudson were good on screen together again. Maybe not quite as "on" as they were in "How to Loose a Guy in 10 Days", but still good.

The Bad: If you cant get with the fact that the movie isn't really intended to be taken seriously most of it won't work. The comedy will likely seem forced or trite, the plot holes will likely bug you and the lack of believability will probably finish it off for you. None of these were a problem for me.

Overall: Is this movie full of plot holes? Yes. Is it believable? No. Is it likely to be an Oscar contender? No. Is it fun to watch? If you take this movie for what it is, an action/adventure/comedy and just go with it you will likely enjoy it. Give it a try!

  • A Fool and His Girl

    By A2I6MHMAZZDCRX on 2008-06-20
Benjamin "Finn" Finnegan (Matthew McConaughey) is a beach bum with an interest in treasure hunts. He's also hardly responsible, which is why he sets his boat on fire and sinks it not too long after we meet him.

Tess Finnegan (Kate Hudson) has had enough. She's taken a job aboard millionaire Nigel Honeycutt's (Donald Sutherland) yacht. And she's divorcing Finn.

Finn's latest quest is the Queen's Dowry, a treasure lost almost 300 years ago. In fact, he's found a piece of it. Now all he needs is financial backing. His irresponsibility has left his last backer rather mad at him. So he decides to get Nigel's help, completely unaware that Nigel is Tess's new boss.

Unfortunately, the shipwreck is somewhere around the island owned by dangerous rapper Bigg Bunny (Kevin Hart). As in Finn's last investor. Can they find the treasure without Bigg getting his hands on it? Can Finn win Tess back in the process?

Let's be honest, this is mindless, predictable entertainment. Especially since the previews gave away many of the key scenes. But it is fun.

It's trying to be a action comedy. It had some laughs, but there weren't as many as I had hoped. The funniest scenes involved Nigel's daughter Gemma as played by Alexis Dziena. Anytime she was on screen, I was guaranteed a laugh. Most of the action in the film was played for laughs as well, and is over the top. Then again, what action movie isn't over the top? Even the exposition scene near the beginning that is key to understanding how Tess and Finn got started on this trail wasn't that great. I couldn't follow it, and I tried.

So why did I like it? Because of the characters. I really did care for all of them. Well, the good guys anyway. Credit for this obviously goes to the actors who are obviously having so much fun making the film. Frankly, they made it hard for me not to like it.

It may make me a fool, but I enjoyed this movie. You may not want to rush out and watch it, but if you get a chance, I bet you would enjoy it.

  • Fools Gold

    By A23T8PFSUW8OQO on 2008-03-06
Fools Gold is a delightful romance comedy with adventure and mild violence thrown in to attract all types of movie-goers. One person wrote that it is a silly movie.....I always thought that silly was synonymous with comedy. You ever watched a serious comedy?????? No, there is no sex, very mild violence and to say this is a "romcom" well that is sure part of the plot but it also understates the flexibility of the movie, the players and the plot 100%! What they neglected to state was that this fun-film is also an adventure movie with History of piracy thrown in.......and they never have to use the "F" word to get a laugh. When the movie concluded me, my wife and 50 other theater goers stood and applauded the movie. What more need I say than, don't listen to the nay-sayers, trust your own intuitiveness and see the movie for yourself. You will be enchanted with the underwater scenes, riveted to your seat during the mild violence scenes and happy and weepy-eyed when Matthew and Kate finally do reconcile their differences and guy proposes marriage to gal, who just a few days before had divorced him. Now for the kicker, Donald Sutherland is in this movie...........need I say more. A seasoned comedian though lately lowered to the level of sinister villian roles, he has returned to the role of comedian and is just as bright, spontaneous and funny as ever. Try it, you might like it!!! Regards to all-Walter

  • As exciting as watching white paint dry on a white wall while listening to corn growing
    By A3HBNOC6ANFNSK on 2008-06-13
There are a certain number of events you can count on in any McConaughey movie. Among these are:
    - his shirt will be off for at least 60% of the movie
    - he'll be the rebellious, troublemaker to balance the determined, down
    to earth female lead
    - the "action" will be less than spectacular
    - humor is mild and watered down to the point that you'll wonder if
they're even attempting to make you laugh
    - he'll take his shirt off at the most inappropriate times... wait did I
    do this one already?

Anyways, "Fool's Gold" is a mediocre at best action / "comedy" with a big cast that largely fails to deliver. Formulaic and uninteresting, the movie might be watchable on a dull sunday afternoon if shown on TV, but I would stay away from buying or renting the DVD.

Finn (McConaughey) is looking for a lost Spanish Galleon in the Caribbean. He believes he has found the location, and has it marked by his own sunk ship. He enlists the help of his ex-wife, Tess (Hudson), who is intrigued until she finds he has no real proof of the Spanish ship's location. Fate puts them together again on the boat of multi-millionaire Nigel Honeycutt (Sutherland) and his daughter, Gemma (Dziena). He is fascinated by Finn's stories, and wants to help him find the treasure. Also looking to find the treasure are Moe (Winstone), Finn's old mentor and gangster rapper Bigg Bunny (Hart), who Finn owes money to.

"Fool's Gold" is a moderately entertaining film. McConaughey and Hudson are trying to recapture the chemistry from "How To Lose A Guy In 10 Days" with moderate success. Sutherland is sporting a poor English accent. Dziena stands out because her character is so incredibly stupid. She seems to steal the scenes she is in. The action is pretty good, especially in the last half hour. Overall, "Fool's Gold" is forgettable though. Check this out on DVD if you must.

  • HORRIBLE!
    By AHSF06670DDN8 on 2008-06-14
Matthew McConaughey is not an actor. He is an arrogant criminal who happens to be attractive.

Kate Hudson is the daughter of mildy talented Goldie Hawn.

These two rotten apples, mixed with a silly screenplay make for one horrible film. The predictability is overt.

The cinematography confuses the "gold" with the skin coloring of the spray tans on screen.

This film is the "Swept Away" mixed with "Pirates of the Caribbean" for the year. It's just plain ole' dumb. Don't waste your time.

  • Better than I thought, but still not fantastic :-l
    By A24ZFFRQ4MG3XL on 2008-06-17
To be very honest, I really love Matthew and I knew he'd have his shirt off through some of the movie (quite a bit actually) and that's the main reason I saw this. Usually when actors in a hit movie have great chemistry, it doesn't mean that their next movie together will be such a hit. I love How To Lose A Guy In Ten Days, but this is very disappointing. They still had the same chemistry but instead of being really outrightly hillarious, it was more silly than anything. It's a predictable mystery movie rather than being a completely romantic comedy and you really felt as if you were the ones on a treasure hunt. I thought Donald Sutherland was very good in here and I also thought that Kate did a great job with her physical comedy and also the location was stunning.
You have to see this for yourself to make up your own mind. It would seem that people are fairly much evenly divided between loving and hating it, and I'm somewhere in the middle. Go see this expecting some funny stupidity and a few good one liners and not expect Oscar material from it. It's definately a DVD movie rather than a movie theatre viewing. It's enjoyable if you leave reality at the door and go with a very open mind. If you expect the same quality as "...10 Days" then you'll be disappointed for sure.

  • Water on the Brain
    By AGKPTMTR3UX1R on 2008-06-23
FOOL'S GOLD is a cute, light, sunny romp by the incredibly blonde team of Matthew McConaughey (Finn) and Kate Hudson (Tess) through the oh-so blue Caribbean in search of treasure lost off the coast of the Spanish Main in the 1700s.

There's something here for everyone, which means that Finn is tanned and muscular and behaves like a refugee from Parrothead Island (for the girls) and Tess is elegant and lithe and bright in a bikini (for the boys). They both spend most of this film wet and half-naked, never a bad thing. A good supporting role is played by Donald Sutherland, who plays the multibillionaire grubstaking the adventure.

Of course, Finn and Tess drive each other crazy as newly-divorced but continuing business partners. The barbed affection between them provides most of the energy of FOOL'S GOLD. There are bad guys also searching for the treasure, so there's some action mixed in with the adventure.

This movie is pure fluff, but it's fun fluff because it's so obviously evident that everyone had a great time on set making this film. It's a good way to spend 100 minutes on your couch eating corn chips and drinking soda.

  • It's all been done... and this doesn't really do it better
    By A25QJBK33C4O0R on 2008-07-05
Fool's Gold takes an old formula and plugs in a couple of current 'hot bods' to try to mine some coin at the box office and later (now) on disc. Unfortunately the formula has been used too many times and what we are given in Fool's Gold doesn't really add enough new twists to make it compelling enough to recommend as a buy. Even as a rental, this one is a bit weak and something that could just as easily be passed over for something else.

This movie wanders territory between the 2 and 3 star range, and if possible, I'd plant it around 2.5 for the whole product. The Blu-ray is relatively light on extras, but that may be more a matter of the studios showing us some mercy. The gag reel that is included isn't all that funny and really doesn't show us much to keep us interested. The Featurette: "Fool's Gold: Flirting with Adventure - The Chemistry Between Two Charming Contemporary Stars" makes up the remaining bonus material, but that's little more than 5 minutes of ego boosting material for the film's stars.

Best recommendation, rent it first, if not skip it entirely. :-(

  • Fun, romantic comedy
    By A27MM555AQY78G on 2008-02-18
I liked this movie. It gave a lot of laughs, and everyone in the theater seemed to be enjoying it as well. Not every movie needs to be intellectual cinema...some of us go to the movies to be entertained! And this movie delivers. It's a fun, good time movie and perfect antidote for winter. I plan on buying the dvd. The reviewer who mentioned violence - if this movie has too much violence, you can't watch television at all. It's rated PG-13.

  • "Fool's Gold" is great!
    By A3LZBOBV9H1HDV on 2008-02-10
"Fool's Gold" is great! This is how the story goes: Ben "Finn" Finnegan is a good-natured, surf bum-turned-treasure hunter who is obsessed with finding the legendary 18th century Queen's Dowry--40 chests of exotic treasure that was lost at sea in 1715. In his quest, Finn has sunk everything he has, including his marriage to Tess Finnegan and his more-rusty-than-trusty salvage boat, "Booty Calls." Just as Tess has begun to rebuild her life, working aboard a mega-yacht owned by billionaire Nigel Honeycutt, Finn discovers a vital clue to the treasure's whereabouts. Certain that his luck will change with the newfound information, Finn maneuvers himself aboard Nigel's yacht and, using his good-natured charm, convinces the tycoon and his Blackberry-wielding, celebutante daughter, Gemma, to join him in the pursuit of the Spanish treasure. Against Tess' better judgment, the search rekindles her love... of discovery. But they are not the only ones after the treasure. Finn's mentor-turned-nemesis Moe Fitch has also set out to claim the prize. The cast led by Matthew McConaughey (as Finn) and Kate Hudson (as Tess), both who also starred in "How To Lose A Guy In 10 Days" (2003) is great! The directing by Andy Tennant (who also directed "Hitch" (2005) & "Sweet Home Alabama" (2002) is great! The story by John Clafin & Daniel Zelman is great! The screenplay by Clafin, Zelman, & Tennant is great! The music by George Fenton (who also did the music to "Hitch" & "Sweet Home Alabama") is great! The cinematography by Don Burgess (who also did the cinematography to "Enchanted" (2007) is excellent! The film editing by Troy Takaki & Tracey Wadmore-Smith (both who also did the film editing to "Hitch" & "Sweet Home Alabama") is great! The casting by Juel Bestrop & Seth Yanklewitz (both who also did the casting to the upcoming "Drillbit Taylor" (2008) is great! The production design by Charles Wood (who also did the production design to "Amazing Grace" (2007) is excellent! The art direction by Damien Drew (who also did the art direction to "Superman Returns" (2006) is excellent! The costume design by Ngila Dickson (who also did the costume design to "Blood Diamond" (2006) and won the Oscar for her work on "The Lord Of The Rings: The Return Of The King" (2003) is excellent! This is an great blend of romantic-comedy and action-adventure that works. McConaughey and Hudson still have chemistry together even after a 5-year gap.

  • There's No Fool Like A Fool Who Spends Money To See "Gold"
    By A3M2WW0PO34B94 on 2008-02-14
There's no fool like a fool who spends money to watch "Fool's Gold", the new film starring Matthew McConaughey-hey and Kate Hudson.

I know, I know. That makes me a fool, a title I richly deserve. Considering the stupendous success of their last screen outing (the only marginally better "How To Lose A Guy In 10 Days"), I was hard pressed to come up with any reason to go to see "Fool's Gold". Boredom and the faint hope this film couldn't possibly be worse than "10 Days" played against my better judgment. I should listen to my better judgment next time and save myself two hours and $10.

Tess (Hudson) and Ben (McConaughey) are in the process of getting a divorce. Tess works for a lonely billionaire, Nigel Honeycutt (Donald Sutherland) on his yacht as they cruise the Caribbean. Ben is working with his buddy, Alfonz (Ewan Bremner) trying to find the lost treasure of the Aurelia, a Spanish ship carrying a new Queen's dowry when it was sunk by a hurricane in the 18th Century. This has been the main thrust of Tess and Ben's life together and she is sick of the constant goose chases and wants the divorce. Ben turns to Bigg Bunny (Kevin Hart), a rapper who now owns the island they suspect harbors the treasure. He also carries a pet rabbit around and makes his own rum, while waving a gun around. His two henchmen, Cordell (Malcolm-Jamal Warner) and Curtis (Brian Hooks) are sent to dispatch Ben when he fails to come up with anything to pay back Bigg Bunny's loan. Ben barely makes the divorce proceedings and manages to convince Tess that he has found something and they enlist Nigel, his Paris-Hilton-esque daughter Gemma (Alexis Dziena) and their former boss and now foe, Moe Fitch (Ray Winstone) to help them hunt for the treasure. But of course, Bigg Bunny wants his share and doesn't care if he has to kill people to get it.

Directed by Andy Tennant, who, as the trailers for this film proudly state, directed "Hitch", a marginally better film, "Fool's Gold" isn't funny, exciting, adventurous, or romantic. Unfortunately, it wants to be all of these things and it doesn't succeed on any level, so it is a pretty dismal failure.

McConaughey must have had a clause inserted in his contract requiring the filmmakers to find any excuse for him to take off his shirt. He is bare-chested a remarkable amount of the time making his character seem even more unnatural than he already is. He's a good looking guy, but nobody walks around bare-chested that much. Even people on vacation in the tropics. Is Ben on vacation or is he searching for treasure? It's difficult to tell.

Early on, it becomes apparent that he is really more interested in rekindling the relationship with Tess because he feels she can help him find the treasure. After they leave the court room, the first words out of his mouth are "I found something, Tess." He doesn't seem interested in finding out how she is doing, what she has been up to, how she is faring in the lead up to their divorce. Tess walks away, but a chance encounter with Gemma brings them together again after the young heiress invites him to join them on daddy's yacht.

As the story progresses, and Tess and Ben face various obstacles (these two aren't very intelligent, and obstacles to them wouldn't put many other people out much) they do seem to care about each other, but this definitely comes across as more of a friendship.

As with her performance in "10 Days", Hudson seems to be the `straight man' of this duo, designed, and charged with trying to maintain any semblance to reality. She seems to care about their relationship, and clearly misses whatever the relationship provided Tess with. Adventure, great sex, both are discussed, but we don't really see either, so who knows. Then, when she becomes convinced Ben may have actually found something, all pretense to create a romance is thrown out the window. They are searching for treasure. Their greed overtakes everything else.

Looking beyond the problems with the relationship between McConaughey and Hudson's characters, it is almost shocking how poorly the rest of the film is constructed.

As soon as Ray Winstone appears on screen, he is painted as a rival of Ben and Tess. Ben and Tess tell Nigel about their previous adventures with Moe, another example of the filmmakers telling us about something we should really be seeing with out own eyes. If we actually watched this happen, it would be infinitely more interesting than watching two people talk about it. After a lengthy amount of screen time devoted to setting up Ben and Tess, we return to Moe and his crew and suddenly he seems to be working in concert with the beautiful couple. I must have blinked my eyes and missed the scene developing this plot twist.

Worse, as soon as Winstone speaks, he betrays his British roots. Many British actors have portrayed Southerners before, most with ease, making people comment how easy it is for the British to play people from Louisiana, Texas, Georgia and the like. Winstone has difficulty with this. He is supposed to be from Louisiana, yet his accent keeps slipping back and forth between his native tongue and his less native pretend accent.

Perhaps even worse, Winstone is shown onscreen bare-chested a great deal as well, almost as much as McConaughey-hey. It quickly becomes apparent why he needed a body double for his character in "Beowulf". My guess is a portrayal of Beowulf with a pot belly would be les than interesting.

Donald Sutherland, usually pretty dependable in any film or television project, also has difficulty with his accent. Initially, I thought he was supposed to be British, but then it occurred to me he Honeycutt is modeled after Rupert Murdoch. He is supposed to be Australian. No, doesn't work.

And his main involvement in the film appears to be reconciliation with his party-girl, heiress daughter, Gemma. This leads to many `heartfelt' moments like when she realizes he named the yacht after her, but doesn't believe it was a conscious decision. This is yet another example of what the filmmakers consider to be comedy. She's dumb. Get it. She's a dumb heiress. Har-har. It would be difficult for anyone to love Gemma, but Sutherland puts a game face on the character.

Gemma is very dumb, so dumb it is difficult to take her the slightest bit serious. Anytime you have a character who is so completely something, sexy, dumb, funny, intelligent, it is important to show they have a little of the opposite to make them seem real. No one is completely one thing, so we need to see a little of the other to make them seem human. There are many characters throughout film history who were created to provide a laugh, or a scare, or a titillating moment, but the most successful of these also show a little of their opposite. Gemma is simply dumb and Alexis Dziena does a good job of making us believe this, but because there is no other facet to this character, she instantly becomes forgettable.

Then there is the Bigg Bunny. This character, the rapper, with a `posse', who has a lot of money, power, and wants even more, is such a cliché; the character doesn't bring anything to the story and is a complete waste. Kevin Hart tries to make him menacing, but this is just more disturbing than anything else. This is supposed to be a comedy, yet these thugs actually kill people. When they kill people, no one seems to care. When they kill one of their own, no one even pauses for a moment, it is so expected, and so racist.

As the story progresses, Bigg Bunny and his henchmen become more reminiscent of the Three Stooges, and bumble their way through the proceedings. Not very original either. You see, the greed is clouding their judgment and making them do stupid things. Yeah, that's it. That's why they are stupid. It has nothing to do with the writer and director. Nothing at all.

"Fool's Gold" is just a stupid, stupid, bad, bad movie. If you spend your money and time on it, consider yourself warned. And maybe I wasn't the only fool to spend his gold on this waste of celluloid.

  • mediocre rom-com - don't expect much and you won't be that disappointed
    By A319Y83RT0MRVR on 2008-02-05
Certainly, "Fool's Gold" is a silly romcom with Kate Hudson and Matthew McConaughey. The pair reunite to see if their surprising chemistry can stir a few bucks the way "How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days" did the same weekend in 2003 (that movie earned $23 mil opening weekend). "Fool's Gold" is silly but not stupid. It's cute in a ditzy sort of way, much like the character Gemma Honeycutt (played by Alexis Dziena). Still, it gets a few laughs and it's exactly what it is marked as - a feel good comedy for Valentine's Day.

  • Do you know what the definiton to "fool's gold" is?
    By A1RNMPOY4XIAA8 on 2008-02-13
Do you know what the definition of fool's gold is? According to the dictionary the definition for fool's gold is: "any of several minerals, especially pyrite and chalcopyrite, sometimes mistaken for gold." Pay close attention to the last part of the description "sometimes mistaken for gold". I guess by naming this film Fool's Gold the screenwriters were trying to be honest: This film may look good (two big stars and a treasure hunt!) but it is not. Still it manages to be reasonably entertaining.

Benjamin Finnegan (played by Matthew MacConaughey) and Tess Finnegan (played by Kate Hudson) are getting divorced after spending several years in the Caribbean and Bahamas searching for a massive Spanish treasure from the 1700s worth $500 million. Once the divorce is finalized they go their separate ways only to unexpectedly find themselves on the same boat of a multi-millionaire father (played by Donald Sutherland) with a daughter who is some kind of actress/celebrity. Tess is a stewardess, Benjamin (referred to as Finn) is seeking financing for another attempt at treasure searching. In no time at all both Tess and Benjamin talk the millionaire into the search. What follows is a formulaic quest for treasure that somehow reunites the "passion" between Finn and Tess. Oh and I forgot to add there is a villain in the mix a rapper named BigBunny.

As I have said before I could complain about plenty of things in this film, but this is plain and simple blissful entertainment, something to lighten your day or you can relax with after a long day. Anyone expecting more will be disappointed.

I don't think IMDB.com poster, herter, could have not summed it up better: "Well, I am getting ready to be entertained with popcorn and Diet coke watching a light hearted and fun flick. I don't want to be preached about morality, justice, green, war or politics."

  • This movie was craptastic!!!
    By A3NGHWCL97EQV7 on 2008-02-16
This movie is a total rip off of Romancing the Stone starring Kathleen Turner and Michael Douglas. Only problem is that that movie was actually funny and mildly adventurous while this movie was a snooze-fest. I couldn't remember laughing once. Not even a chuckle. Jokes were horribly written and executed. everyone involved should hide on a deserted island and think about this horrid production that they participated in. The only redeeming factor for this film was that Matthew Mconaughey had his shirt off. Other than that it was pretty much pointless to see this film. Avoid this mess and save your money for an extra value meal.

Don't waste your time with this movie. There is not plot and the magic they had in "How to Lose a Guy in Ten Days" is gone. In this movie, it was like they'd never met before in their life. It is very slow and boring. It's not worth it.

  • Bigg Bunny Cameo
    By A1HDQE70AU8LVA on 2008-05-09
If you love Matthew Mc Conaughey and Kate Hudson, this film is irresistible!!!Only these two could have pulled off these roles. Their chemistry is off-the-charts and they make the plot fun.

The film is set in beautiful tropical locales as Kate and Matthew pursue lost treasure and----each other. They even reuse a prominent line from "How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days". It's too cute...

This movie is not meant to be serious in any way. You can't bring yourself to be afraid of the villain---a ficticious rapper named Bigg Bunny. He lends comic relief. It has to be said that Sutherland was great in his role as well.

If you are expecting a super-suspenseful action movie, you won't like this. But if you have a sense of humor and enjoy great scenery and these two actors, get yourself some Fool's Gold. :0)

  • Please avoid it
    By A2JP3UQ5GQCW9D on 2008-05-11
I swear I cannot recall a more boring "adventure" movie in my whole life. In spite of the "cool" actors, the tropical set, the intrigues about pirates and treasures the movie is "the" perfect sleeping pill. There is not a single exciting, adventurous or romantic minute in the whole length of it. It makes one feel uncomfortable to see Donald Sutherland trying to navigate this rubbish nonsense. Unless you really desperately need a cure for imsomnia, avoid it at all costs.

  • A Little Slow at Parts
    By A16KNJPLDWSPCP on 2008-05-28
If you like How to Loose a Guy in 10 Days you'll love this movie. A bit slow at one point but it picked back up. My husband and I laughed at the silly comedy in the movie. It was fun seeing two people and how different they were at times but the relationship still works. Great Flick.

  • we must defeat the black man underwater
    By A1FOUZ4CCCRVMA on 2008-05-31
A terrible and formulaic movie of course. The only redeeming quality is that the black man is the enemy and the enemy that is ultimately defeated in an underwater metaphoric battle. The New World is the inheritance of the white man, not the black man, and not the red man who has been defeated. In this movie, the black man is defeated. This is still rare but hopefully not for long. The black man shoves his big loveless cock in our faces but in this movie M.M. triumphs over the black man and claims the treasures of the red man for the white man.

Of course there is a great deal of irony in this revue and only the most retarded of all races will be unable to recognize it.

  • "FOOLS GOLD" movie review by Michael Elliano
    By A1FGOU69XQIU9V on 2008-06-19
Kate and Matt have great chemistry in this love/adventure movie and its all good fun. The problem with reviews of a movie like this is that it doesn't take much to find something that is unrealistic or off the wall. But, in saying that you need to be reminded that this movie is not supposed to be a serious drama. It is in good taste and fund to watch like a great football game, even if the team you want loses. So..., just enjoy it.

  • Low Quality Service Is Not Ready
    By A1BIRIN3VZ0QW8 on 2008-07-07
I'm sure the movie is fine, we didn't watch it. This was our second experience using the unbox service and our HD TiVo. In both cases, the video was 480i. This movie showed in both letterbox and panels, that is, a black frame around all sides of the movie on our HD tv! If there are options to download HD quality video through this service, they aren't obvious. If you are using standard def equipment, enjoy, if you have HD, rent a DVD until the service is ready.

  • Fool's Gold Movie Review
    By A2MYUI8IT6UBUU on 2008-02-15
Now here's a film that couldn't be more farfetched in its premise and more watered-down in its approach. Fool's Gold takes the typical romantic adventure film and injects it with contemptibly unnecessary character development for its supporting cast and shows series of events either adding up too smoothly or being wholly unfathomable. Likely to make its projected profit based on the big-name cast, this stale re-hash of Romancing the Stone and National Treasure is about as much fun as sinking in a ship.

In 1715, a treasure galleon with hordes of money for the queen's dowry disappears in hurricane winds. Present day treasure hunters Ben Finnegan (Matthew McConaughey) and his ex-wife Tess (Kate Hudson) have been searching for the lost fortune for years, but continually get caught up in financial and marital problems. Ben discovers a clue to the whereabouts of the sunken ship and enlists the help of millionaire Nigel Honeycutt (Donald Sutherland) and his daughter Gemma (Alexis Dziena) while he attempts to uncover the loot and win back Tess. But rum-maven Bigg Bunny (Kevin Hart) is intent on getting his hands on the riches too, and isn't afraid to use brute force to stop those in his way.

PG-13 brute force, that is. The only killing that takes place is amongst the baddies and just about every other violent event is tinged with humor or inconceivability. Like nearly all recent toned-down comedies, the predicament is always too serious and the resolution too unlikely. For a villain unconcerned with cold-blooded murder, Bigg Bunny sure does shy away from deadly violence and even blood. Henchman Cyrus, on the other hand, relishes in brutality and evil grins. PG-13 evil grins.

Each of the supporting characters in the film seems to soak up enormous amounts of running time, delving into backstories that couldn't be more pointless. Gemma and her father experience even more bonding time than the main characters, who struggle over their recent divorce. Gemma's obnoxious stupidity often stirs up laughter and isn't entirely wasted, but the constant attention to mending her shaky relationship with her very aged father is beyond meaningless.

The characters are all very poorly constructed stereotypes of cooler characters that we've seen in better movies. Tess strives to be the lead character, although her bland and predictable dialogue and trite actions aren't helped by the less-than-mediocre acting by Hudson. Ben attempts the carefree and simple-minded approach at a humorous romantic, but comes across with only one iota of the intelligentsia that constructs films like Raiders of the Lost Ark and Romancing the Stone, both featuring witty and resilient leading men. While some of the supporting roles almost overshadow the leads with interesting idiosyncrasies, most have nearly zero impact on the story and constantly feel accidental and needless.

Fool's Gold will certainly attract the audiences it was intended to appeal to - the people who wish to see a mindless action-oriented romantic comedy without expending any brainpower. As entertainment, the film only partially succeeds, and as a work of art it completely and exhaustively fails.

    - Mike Massie

  • If there were zero stars, that would be this movie.
    By A3H4GJIEX6OQGG on 2008-02-16
This movie is absolutely terrible. From the painfully awful "humor" to the dreadful acting of both of the lead actors, this movie was the biggest waste of money.

  • Fool me once shame on you, fool me twice shame on me.
    By A11QWW7ZWFSQLP on 2008-05-09
I saw this movie on my first date with some dude. I saw the movie and it was cute and not as predictable as most are and not sappy. Anywho, It depends what fits your fancy but this was a okay film for me and my date to watch. Unfortunately I didnt enjoy the ending since his wife called me saying I was dating her husband and he was cheating on her with me. Talk about a way to end a date, A black eye and a car keyed. *his not mine* Kinda makes me feel like what Kate Hudson felt everytime she was betrayed. Anywho, I cant wait for the dvd to come out so I can watch it with BETTER company. I always thought Matthew McConaughey, Kate Hudson make a cute couple XD

  • Worth a watch
    By A2POL079FJTNI on 2008-06-08
It was actually a pretty good flick to pass a couple of hours despite the bad reviews, sure it's a forgettable movie and a cliché story but it's entertainment and it kept me entertained, that's fine with me. I think it's good for us to watch a silly movie like this every now and then, keeps you lighthearted. Good action and some really funny parts so it gets 4 stars from me.

As a curious side note, how did this get a PG-13 rating?! There's some strong curse words, violence at times and some boobs lol, doesn't bother me but I was curious about that.

  • More Like Fool's Bronze
    By A27VY7BUVD09I2 on 2008-06-16
Finn (Matthew McConaughey) is a treasure hunter and goofball who believes he has found the location to a hidden treasure. His now ex wife Tess, (Kate Hudson) is a historian who believes that Finn has no real proof of the treasures existence. Mere coincidence lands them both on millionaire Nigel Honeycutt's (Donald Sutherland) yacht. After some explaining to Honeycutt, the duo decide to seek out the treasure and are in a race against time to find it before their enemies do.

"Fool's Gold" is a mildly entertaining movie. It has something for everyone: some comedy, action/adventure, romance, and for the ladies, Matthew McConaughey shirtless. Though a romantic comedy the action scenes are pretty decent, especially towards the end. Some will get a kick out of this movie and some won't. My advice, go rent it.

  • Incredibly bad
    By A291DLJDR874UR on 2008-06-19
With a cast including Matthew McConaughey, Kate Hudson, and Donald Sutherland, you would think: how bad could it be??? well, it's beyond your imagination. With a predictable storyline, bad logic, unfunny jokes (even with a much lowered standard for this genre), and a extremely BORING "adventure", Fool's Gold should be renamed as Fool's Movie. I was lucky to have seen this movie on a plane for free. Otherwise I'd kick myself for wasting both money and time.
