The Same Old Song & Dance By AQOC98L1194KG on 2008-06-30
So I'm not the biggest Aerosmith fan in the world, and I'll go ahead and admit that. But I do like Guitar Hero, and I own an Aerosmith album or two, so I thought "nice, new songs!" and picked this one up. Powering through it in an evening, I came to some key realizations that I thought I might pass on in hopes of saving my fellow mock-rockers some coin.
1) The song selection is horrible.
When I thought "GH: Aerosmith", I was imagining "Crazy", "Cryin", "Janie...", "Hole in my Soul", "Angel", "Jaded", or "Don't Want to Miss a Thing" might be on it. All absent, as if they only secured the rights to the songs that were of little further monitary use to the band.
2) This is a Guitar Hero 3 abbreviation.
Oh sure, it's got new songs, and many of them (~25 of ~40) are Aerosmith. To it's credit, it does include two songs per stage from bands who have opened for Aerosmith, to break up the monotony. But there's not a time I remember saying to myself "oh, snap - this song will rock - I can't push start fast enough!" as often occurred in the series' previous iterations. The unlocked characters are the same as GH3 (plus some Aerosmith members), the guitars and outfits are largely the same (although your character gets replaced with Aerosmith during their songs anyway), and the uninspiring unlockable songs number in the single digits.
When the loading screen quotes aren't fun factoids about Aerosmith's Life and Times, they are the SAME AS GH3. I mean, really, that's just lazy.
At least when Rock Band decided to skimp on its content for the Wii, they value-priced the expansion discs.
Rent this one, beat it (violently, if possible), and turn it back in the next day.
"Dude Looks Like a" . . . DUD ! By A2E99QJSCBUE2C on 2008-07-06
I was really looking forward to this. I am a moderate Aerosmith fan with at least 12-15 favorite songs that would really rock in this game. Unfortunately, only 3 made it. The songs that were chosen would be great if the GH player were as old as Aerosmith (that's right) well over 50-years-old. And guess what, my Dad doesn't want to play! So why weren't more songs from the last 15 years chosen? Yikes, I say!
I also started on HARD and got all the way through without any failures. And I'll be honest, I'm not the greatest player. GH3 on hard still gives me fits toward the end.
I'll say the replay value on this game is just about nil. I'll probably return to play a few (5-6) of the songs, but I'm about to give Rock Band for the Wii a try if this is all Activision is going to put out.
This one is a dud. I'd pass if I were you.
Good Enough For Now By A1FVSRDZG15YOH on 2008-07-01
OK, so there are a few Aerosmith gems that are missing in the set list and the game generally is a repackaged GH3, but there are enough hits (and some cool b-sides that I didn't know before) that the game is fun. The songs don't seem to be as hard at the various difficulty levels, but the riffs are quite a bit different from anything on GH3. There are lot more hammer-ons and the bass/rhythm lines are a bit more fun than GH3. Since the game interface is essentially the same for both games, one thing that would be nice is if there was a way to easily switch between GH3 and GHA without having to change discs.
I can foresee GH releasing versions for other bands, but I'm not sure I'll spring for them; I'm going to wait for Nintendo to figure out how to do downloadable content.
Overall, for Wii'ers, this is a good GH 'fix'. Non-die hard Aerosmith fans with other platforms may want to rent and bask in the glory of picking which songs they want to pay extra for....and not have to switch discs.
Very disappointing By ARPPSCFMIJOB6 on 2008-07-02
I was excited to see that a GH3 Aerosmith was being released and picked mine up early. However, it didn't take long before extreme disappointment set in. The first complaint is that they did away with the Co-op Career mode. As my wife and I like to play a full career together, this was very disappointing. You can still play a co-op multiplayer but you need a career started to get the songs opened.
Next, instead of having to complete 3 of 4 songs (for easy and medium) and hopefully being excited about at least 2 of them, the Aerosmith one starts you off with playing two headliner bands, going into an encore with Aerosmith. Then, you play another Aerosmith song to get to another encore. So, essentially, you have absolutely no choice in the songs you play.
I agree with a few other posts about being disappointed in the Aerosmith song selection. I was hoping for more noticeable songs rather than trying to find the beat to a song I have never heard before.
Also, when you start with Easy or Medium levels, the first 6 to 8 songs are incredibly easy before they begin to get a bit more exciting. Be prepared for this.
Rent this one, get through it, and return it.
Guitar Hero drops the ball By A3D6889J8IFFMH on 2008-07-03
Boring, Boring, Boring. No wonder Aerosmith is not considerd one of the great guitar bands. Plugged it in and went through the entire set list on hard and only had to start over on one song. Extremely easy compared to GH3. GH3 had some great songs both modern and classic. The Aerosmith songs are awful except for a couple and the other songs stink out loud. I am not a huge Aerosmith fan but still figured it would be fun. IT'S NOT!!! I expected more from Guitar Hero. Very dissapointing. Rent it and return it the next day after you have beaten the entire game on expert. I wish I had.
- Guitar Hero III With Different Songs
     By A3744UVOQQNJ97 on 2008-07-01
If you like Guitar Hero III and you like Aerosmith, you'll like Guitar Hero Aerosmith. The set list is O.K and includes 41 songs, but it would have been nice to see a few more. The onstage graphics are fun, and after playing through all the tracks I have a better feel for what Aerosmith sounds like. By the end of the set list I felt like I was part of the band. Overall, if you like Guitar Hero III and are looking for some more tracks to play, I'd say it is worthwhile. Now all I need is Guitar Hero Guns N' Roses. Rock On.
- Same game, different songs
     By A3UIAJJNJPZ7XL on 2008-06-29
If you have played any of the Guitar Hero games... this one is no different. Each section of this one has 3 Aerosmith songs and a couple songs from other groups, and all the bonus songs are Aerosmith songs, so if you are not an Aerosmith fan, this may not be your favorite game, but it will still be fun!
- Dissapointed
     By A15MZZNEUCM5YB on 2008-07-03
The song selection here is pretty sad. Aerosmith has such a great body of work, and they just did not take advantage of it, so we end up with very few songs.
The store, called The Vault here is worthless beyond adding new songs. Any Aerosmith songs you play you can not customize your character at all - you play with the Aerosmith setup, so your customization does not count on the majority of songs.
They pretty much took away all choice as to what you will play. You can choose which opening act song you want first, but after that the game doles out songs one at a time that you have to finish before you get to the next song.
Overall, if I realized what I was in for I definitely would not have purchased this disk. This game will live on the shelf in favor of the much better done Legends of Rock.
- People get it right
     By A3IUQ44M0G64OR on 2008-07-06
Why is everyone complaining about these songs being unheard of? What do you people want, to play Guitar Hero to lame 90's songs like Cryin and I don't want to Miss a thing? Give me a break. I read some reviews saying these were not famous Aerosmith songs. All of Aerosmith's body of 1970s work is not only their BEST but also their most FAMOUS. the reason everyone makes fun of aerosmith now is because of songs like pink, cryin, crazy, amazing, all that pop bubble gum stuff. all these songs from the 70s are ideal for a game based on a GUITAR. how do you think aerosmith rose to stardom? hello, BY PLAYING THE SONGS ON THE GHAEROSMITH SET LIST. THESE SONGS ARE AEROSMITH'S BEST SONGS, BY FAR.
- Great first time guitar hero game
     By A2NIXBJL723VTK on 2008-07-06
This is my first guitar hero game, and I really like it a lot! It's fun trying to beat the songs on Easy, then Medium, then Hard, etc. It seems like what a lot of other reviewers have a problem with is it's similarities to other GH games - but I think on it's own it's pretty darn fun.
It's true that not all of the songs are that great - I'm not an Aerosmith fan, and some of the B-sides just don't sound good - but almost without exception they are fun to play, and I find that by playing them I actually start to like them more.
That said, I probably would have preferred a non-Aerosmith branded game, with a larger range of bands. Aerosmith is a fine band, but I think I would have preferred greater variety.
I find the boss battles to be really difficult - I'm unable to beat the Joe Perry boss battle on medium, even though I can get through all of the songs prior pretty easily. The problem is that you can't practice the battle, so you have to keep trying which is kind of lame.
Some niggles: I found "The Vault" interface (where you buy songs, videos, character models, outfits, etc) to be a little confusing, and most of the character models to be either inappropriate (especially slutty girl models) or just gross (most of the guy models).
I found the guitar controller itself to be nicely made and quite responsive.
So, overall I think this game is a lot of fun and this first time Guitar Hero owner is having a lot of fun working through the Career mode on medium!
- For Aerosmith Fans only
     By A3VO5E4HWC3SAF on 2008-07-03
I was not too happy with the song lists for this guitar hero. Unfortunally I should have looked online before I bought it to see what the songs lists were. I wanted more songs and didnt realize (dummy me) that it would MOSTLY be aerosmith songs. Since Im not such a big fan of Aerosmith I knew approximatly 5 songs off the whole game. Its like all the guitar heroes, just mostly dedicated to the band and their not so famous songs. I really feel you need to be a HUGE Aerosmith fan to really enjoy this game.
- Disappointing!
     By A2YGJUGZ22LC5W on 2008-07-05
I just joined the Guitar Hero cult with Guitar Hero III for Wii. I adored the game and was counting the days until the release of Guitar Hero Aerosmith. Now I wish I had saved myself the $50!
1) There is no co-op career. My fiance and I loved to play together in career mode and this was a big let down for us.
2) MUCH easier (and therefore kinda boring) than GH3. I easily beat the game on Hard without once having to start a song over, and getting at least 4 stars on each one.
3) The song selection is terrible. There are only 3 or 4 really great, well known Aerosmith songs. The rest are either stuff from the present that nobody knows or stuff from the 70's that I haven't previously heard. Some of the songs I'm not familiar with are OK, but I would've much preferred to see songs that I know and love. As for the non-Aerosmith songs, most are extremely boring and simple with a few that are ok (Joan Jett and Lenny Kravitz stand out in my memory).
4) Looking at the animated Steven Tyler gets really freaky after a while.
I'm already back to playing my GH3...and putting this up on Craigslist!
- It's OK, but just stick with GHIII
     By A27NX3U1A6P30Z on 2008-07-11
First off, I'm a HUGE guitar hero fan. I've played GH3 many times over, and I've never gotten tired of re-playing most of the songs on that game. With the release of GH-Aerosmith, I was extremely excited to have ~40 new songs to play (although I'm only a moderate Aerosmith fan). After playing through the game, I am extremely disappointed GH-Aerosmith and cannot recommend it to non-Aerosmith fanatics.
Pros
- Great graphics, definite upgrade over GH3
- Good storyline, the live interviews were interesting, and it was cool to re-play some of Aerosmith's critical gigs
- The recognizable Aerosmith songs are quite fun to play (especially "Walk This Way", "Love in an Elevator", "Living on the Edge", and several others)
Cons (lots of them)
- Only 41 songs (in comparison to GH3's ~75 songs) - how can they justify the nearly equivalent prices of the two games?
- The obscure Aerosmith songs and the non-Aerosmith songs have almost zero re-playability. In my opinion, the guitar parts on these songs were repetitive and boring.
- Omission of key Aerosmith songs such as "Dude (Looks like a Lady)" in favor of some lesser, more obscure Aerosmith songs
- As indicated by other reviewers, the game is pretty easy, but worse, the guitar parts just aren't very interesting or fun to play.
- Star power is a disaster. In star power mode, the virtual audience claps (very loudly) to some random beat that does NOT correspond to the rhythm of the song. Never in the history of music has an audience (real or otherwise) had less rhythm! It is incredibly distracting to have contrasting beats on the same song... GH3 did NOT have this same problem.
- The volume of the guitar track was inconsistent between songs. I had to adjust the guitar volume (Options menu) for each individual song to have optimal guitar audio. Again, GH3 did not have this problem.
- The timing of the notes in Expert mode seemed to be quite off (especially on "Cat Scratch Fever" and other songs). I had to introduce an audio lag (Options menu) to try and make the video notes and audio correlate. This was not a function of my TV, and GH3 did NOT have similar problems on my system.
In my opinion, the game-play of GH-Aerosmith is "sloppy" compared to GH3. Perhaps these problems are the result of rushing this product to market in advance of the upcoming GH-World Tour... Anyways, if you're a die-hard Aerosmith fan and you aren't too concerned about game-play, then you'll enjoy this game. Otherwise, get GH3 (if you're a newbie) or wait for GH-World Tour...
- The worst Guitar Hero!!!
     By A1CB6K31E7Q498 on 2008-07-16
This is a misleading game to say the least. There's nothing fun about this Aerosmith series, and actually, they should not even use the Aerosmith name for this game.
First of all, there are not a lot of Aeromsmith songs. For each level, you have two songs from some other bands and then you get two songs from Aerosmith. What the heck is that all about???? I bought this game to play Aerosmith songs, not some other bands that I do not care for!!!!!
Second, they only have very few Aerosmith songs that people recognize. For goodness sake, why put Aerosmith songs that no one knows about. Most of the big hits from Aerosmith were not included. Why the hell would you create this game if you don't include hits from Aerosmith.
This is just a huge, huge, huge waste of money!!! This game is NOT created for people who enjoy music from Aerosmith. This game is created so that the idiots at Activision could steal money from people!!! What a disappointing game.
- great game but there are some song missing
     By on 2008-06-30
this is a awesome game but its missing a couple of songs like dude looks like a lady, janies got a gun and others i was hopeing that these songs would be there but its just a minor mistake but other wise a great game and I would recommend it to anyone.
- I love Aerosmith!
     By A3PJWGSYVC9UF9 on 2008-06-30
I wish the game had more of Aerosmith's top hits! All and all the game was very entertaining and fun to play. I wish you can play more than two people. I will need to purchase an additional guitar to play battle mode and test my skills. I absolutley love the game.
- Unless you LOVE Aerosmith, don't buy this
     By A5S65EEABORQQ on 2008-07-09
Here's the problem with Guitar Hero Aerosmith: It's got mostly Aerosmith songs! I like Aerosmith, but I don't want to take the time to learn how to play obscure stuff when Guitar Hero 3 has such a fantastic selection of songs. Also, many of the songs on this game are way too easy. The non-Aerosmith songs are fairly uninteresting too. Invest your money in Guitar Hero 3 if you haven't already bought a Guitar Hero game.
- What is up with the sound quality?
     By A2JIOT356R4MAP on 2008-07-16
So I am curious what has happened with the sound here? On some songs I cannot even hear the singing and cannot hear the guitar, I have to change the volume settings, but it still doesn't even really help at all. I am so dissapointed in this purchase, I absolutely love Aerosmith, but am so not happy with this purchase. I have finished GH3 on easy and it took me a bit and I totally zipped through the easy level on Aerosmith GH on the first try, it was crazy!! I hope that whatever they come out with next, that it is way better then this. I am surprised that Aerosmith allowed this to be released.
- Somewhat Disappointed
     By A1PWM1XE2RY7SL on 2008-07-23
My son (age 6) and I were really looking forward to this when it first came out. I had ordered it through Amazon on the 25th of June and it arrived on the 30th (1 day after the premier).
My pros are as follows:
- New Songs
My cons are as follows:
- Not enough songs from other bands
- Bonus set list is way too small (probably half the size of the bonus set list in GH3)
- Have to play on expert mode to make it somewhat challenging
- Not many selections for guitars and no new characters
- Co-op mode is boring
- You can't hear Steven Tyler sing on some of the songs
- The guitar seems to be out of sync with the song or vice versa.
Overall, I give this a "C". My favorite song out of the whole game is Dream Police - and that's the first song! Also, why would you have a cover of Hard to Handle?
I should have just saved my money and waited for GH4.
- Awesome!
     By A19NKDU3XLP8B8 on 2008-06-30
If you are an Aerosmith fan, you'll love this game. It has some of their best songs with some from other bands as well. Set is just like the other Guitar Hero games where you have to unlock songs as you go.
- not too shabby
     By A2PAFLSHUYV8K9 on 2008-07-03
Even though this game is basically a copy of GH3, there were enough newities to keep me entertained for the 3 hours it took to finish it. Its hard to complain about the game though, because it was exactly what I figured it would be. There are only about 40 songs on the game, a handful of which I recognized. My only real problem with the game is the price. I don't really care about the less-than-perfect sound and graphics...Thats why I bought a Wii instead of a PS3 or XBox 360 in the first place. So if you aren't that big of an Aerosmith fan, this game is still worth playing. Although, you might want to wait until you can find it cheaper...
- GHERO AEROSMITH REVIEW
     By A2N97R1GJX54Q2 on 2008-07-03
Game is a great continuation to GH3. This game is not about graphic quality, so don't ask. If you're a true Aerosmith fan, you'll like the chronology and selection of songs. I also agree there could be more. There's a huge catalog to choose from. You'll find yourself turning up the volume and getting lost in some of the songs. I definitely see a trend starting here. Get ready for GH4 Metallica. . . Cary Kinder / Franklin, Oh
- First Time Playing Guitar Hero, Very Fun Game!!
     By AM76ZI8IGO5R6 on 2008-07-04
As the title of this review stated, this is my first time playing Guitar Hero, period. So I can't tell you how it stacks up vs GH3.
That said, I found it to be a fun experience, which will only make me want to go get GH3 for Wii. Aerosmith wouldn't be my first choice of bands, but unlike many who clamored for more hits, I liked playing some other songs I may have not heard of or forgotten about. The Run DMC tracks were a blast also.
We're gonna have to wait for downloadable content when GH "World Tour" comes out. If you're a fan of Aerosmith or even just a casual fan, this is an enjoyable game. If you can't stand them, then perhaps it's best to wait for the next version of GH.
- Absolutely Horrible.
     By A20L779RCMXR6W on 2008-07-05
I am an average Aerosmith fan, and this was a horrible game, I'm sorry. The songs are slow and not at all stimulating in the Guitar Hero sense, the game itself is easy and not at all as challenging as GH3. Do not waste time or money. Do not even rent. Between this and what I am hearing about Rock Band for Wii, it is all in all a depressing debut month for these games.
- Awesome even without co-op
     By A2TOX3E4WZ8BSQ on 2008-07-08
Overall, this is a pretty good compilation of songs from Aerosmith as well as "cover" songs from other bands that Aerosmith liked, influenced, or was influenced by.
Sweet Emotion is just awesome to play. Easy, medium and hard are pretty easy if you've gotten through hard and expert on GHIII. Even Expert mode at the beginning isn't too bad, but it does get tougher as you move forward into the band's history. However, it does seem to have been made easier than what GHIII was.
The gameplay is typical GH play. You start each set as the opening act, playing 2 cover songs. When you play as the cover band (which is the first 2 songs for each set), you play as the characters from GHIII (which you can choose for your profile). But, once you've gotten past the cover tunes, then Aerosmith comes out and then the show REALLY rocks as you play two songs and then an encore as Aerosmith.
You earn money and each set begins with a video with the band explaining that part of their history. You can unlock more songs as well as more lengthy videos to learn more about Aerosmith and their history.
Overall, if you're an Aerosmith fan, you cannot go wrong with this. Casual GH players may find this a let down as the song list is smaller than GHIII, but for me, this is an awesome addition for the Wii GH franchise.
This gets four stars because there is no co-op and there is no Dude Looks Like a Lady. Otherwise, the songs are great and it's going to make me break out my Aerosmith CDs and listen to them again.
- Aerosmith flavored Guitar Hero that doesn't offer too much
     By AJKWF4W7QD4NS on 2008-07-10
Since Activision and Neversoft took control of the Guitar Hero franchise, we've been getting a steady stream of sequels and spin-off's, with Guitar Hero: Aerosmith being the latest game in the series. Featuring a pretty good collection of songs spanning Aerosmith's long career, you'll find that besides adding the Aerosmith-themed presentation, the game itself is basically identical to Guitar Hero III. This isn't really a bad thing, but considering this is a full-priced game, it would have been nice if there would have been a little more overall variations. The track list here is quite good though, with even some bonus tracks from Joe Perry's Joe Perry Project to find and play too, along with some bonus interviews with the band. Getting through the game isn't that much of a challenge though if you're a Guitar Hero veteran, as the game proves to be not all that difficult compared to previous Guitar Hero games. It should also go without saying that if you aren't a fan of Aerosmith, this probably isn't for you. All in all, Guitar Hero: Aerosmith is an enjoyable diversion that fans of the band will get a lot of enjoyment out of for a while, but in the end, the game doesn't offer enough bang for your buck.
- Oh my gosh
     By A1SK7D6596LSK5 on 2008-07-11
I am sitting here laughing at all the responses, "I bought the Aerosmith version and I wish there weren't so many Aerosmith songs on it."
LOL What did you think?
And if you don't like the playlist, don't buy it.
I for one found that it was a little easier than GHIII in that I may actually have a chance on some hard songs. I love to see Cheap Trick and Joan Jett in the mix as well.
Happy Rockin'!!!
- Guitar Hero: Aerosmith
     By A1LON9QGRSQRMI on 2008-07-11
Let's get one thing straight first--this is Guitar Hero. As long as there is rock music and a G-R-Y-B-O color fretboard, it will always be Guitar Hero. That basically means that the "fun" factor of the game will always be at high, because it is very, very difficult to ruin a game that is placed around some fairly simple gameplay.
But, of course, this is Guitar Hero: Aerosmith, something new for the series, as it is mainly focusing on one of Rocks's biggest hits. In that sense--it's a total success. If you're an Aerosmith fan, or just like that style of music, this game will work very well. It's got all of the songs that I personally love, and even some that I didn't know about, and still liked. And let me get one thing straight; rocking out at the "Halftime Show" to the song "Dream On," is freaking awesome.
Now, let's talk about the other parts of the game--the non-Aerosmith is pretty decent. High points include Joan Jett, Cheap Trick, Joe Perry's seperate band, Black Crowes, and a surprising inclusion, an old-school rap song by Run/DMC. The non-Aerosmith playlist is somewhat small, which is a bit disheartening, but what's there is enjoyable, and good enough to break up the Steven Tyler input. Activision could have decided to include more songs in the bonus tracks, but it's just aerosmith/Joe Perry band tracks.
The Gibson Les Paul guitar you can get with the game, contrary to many reports I read, works excellently. The only thing about this game I can really cringe about is the graphics. Guitar Hero III managed to compensate for the Wii's graphical lacking-ness by dumbing down the graphics to Guitar Hero II level--but this time the developers wanted to push it towards the level that the Xbox 360 and PS3 are capable of, and stumble quite a bit. Steven Tyler's face does NOT look good at all, the rest of the band barely keeping in the level of "decent." Tyler's dancing animations are pretty cool, but overall the graphics on this game just aren't adding up. Considering that "Transformers" managed some impressive graphics, I'm not sure how this happened, but hey, I'm not a game developer.
In short--it's Guitar Hero, and it's fun. Buy it if you want to have another 60 or so songs to accompany GH3, but I can't blame you if you just decide to wait for World tour or pick up Rock Band.
- Disappointed
     By A18YVTIKG7WN8I on 2008-07-24
I was disappointed in the conversion back to the guitar hero two game play. guitar hero three was a huge step in providing quality entertainment but unfortunately we didn't receive that same quality for Aerosmith.
- I expected so much more of this game...

I love Aerosmith!! but come on this game doesn't make justice to the huge play list they have, only 3 or 4 good songs in the game...what happened with crazy, crying, amazing, angel, falling in love is so hard on your knees, pink, etc...
Im pretty dissapointed with this game :'(
