(217 reviews)

Best Price: $9.81

For Celtic Thunder, Sharon Browne has teamed up with Grammy-nominated Irish songwriting and composing veteran Phil Coulter to produce a show that includes an eclectic mix of songs ranging from the traditional "Mountains of Mourne" and "Come By the Hills" to international hits such as "Brothers in Arms" and "Desperado," as well as original compositions by Coulter, who has written hits for Elvis Presley ("My Boy") and the Bay City Rollers, and performed with Van Morrison, Tom Jones, and the Rolling Stones. The ensemble numbers in Celtic Thunder reflect the power of the vocalists, who range in age from 14 to 40, and feature songs that celebrate a common Celtic heritage. MPN: 2 - UPC: 602517665620

  • Great Music, Silly Reviews

    By A33VC32XMJBLZS on 2008-03-29
I can't believe that people are giving this low stars just because it does not have all of the songs from the concert DVD (which is a separate product altogether). You really should rate the CD on what it IS and what it is not.

Besides, executive producer Sharon Browne posted on their official web site that there will be a 2nd CD containing the "missing" songs that will be coming out in September, and featuring a bonus track of "Danny Boy."

So my review of the CD, as it IS....

Wonderful! If you are looking for traditional Irish music, this probably isn't the album for you, but if you are looking for five talented vocal performers coming together to produce a terrific contemporary album, then hold on to your seats! Each song is beautifully arranged and executed to perfection, producing a coherent album that embraces each of the strengths of the individual soloists.

    Definitely recommended!

  • A Stellar Performance

    By A15WRSGXSW5KDC on 2008-03-25
These 5 lads may just be the next musical Phenomenon. Amazing voices, beautiful Orchestration, excellent song content. I can't stop listening to it. It is extremely rare that one finds enjoyment in an entire cd. This is that rare occasion.

  • Don't be fooled by the reviews! This is hokey stuff

    By ANZ704P11KWWW on 2008-04-04
This is hokey "Irish" music from a group put together by a promoter (yes, just like Backstreet Boys) for the sole purpose of making money. Don't be fooled! This isn't the real deal.

If you want the real deal, search amazon for Celtic Thunder and scroll down to The Light of Other Days, by the original Celtic Thunder -- a band that went by that name for OVER 20 YEARS until it was mis-appropriated by this goofy bunch.

  • Excellent Music - A Breath of Fresh Air

    By AHQGRVEE9BN2N on 2008-03-20
This is a fantastic new group of individual solo artists who collectively have a wonderful harmony. There is literally something for every one here. Stand Outs are Keith Harkin who wrote 1 of the songs he sings (Lauren and I) and looks like the surfer lad he is. We will absolutely hear more from him beyond Celtic Thunder. Ryan, Paul, Damian and George all have their own great vocal qualities and personalities. Ryan will do equally well as a singer and actor if he chooses to act (He's even a certified Accountant), George is well known throughout Scotland and the UK as a deep-voiced folk singer, Paul is a professional operatic singer since the age of 14 and Damian is an up-and-comer at the age of 15. A couple of the songs will melt your heart, and still a few more will cause your heart to swell with pride for Ireland regardless of what country you hail from. One song, "The Island" gave me a new perspective on the wars of Lebanon, Ireland and even our own US conflict in Iraq. Buy this DVD and CD - you won't regret it! This is one of the few groups I would really like to meet in person. I'll definitely be at their concert in Sacramento CA in Dec 2008!

Celtic Thunder is an amazing group of solo artists who each have wonderful voices. They each bring their own talents and personalities to the songs and they perform. Keith Harkin wrote and sings "Lauren and I", a beautiful and original song. Keith is an amazing, talented performer who composes, sings and plays guitar. Keith's guitar playing is excellent and he puts lots of emotion and feeling into each song he performs. Keep watching for Keith in the future! He is an upcoming artist and I hope he will be able to put a solo CD out in the future. I recommend buying Lauren and I and all of Keith's songs. Damian, Paul, Ryan, and George all have their fantastic vocal talents and personalities they bring to the show. All 5 performers compliment each other. Their harmonies blend together and they have the voice of angels. The songs performed on the DVD and CD are all excellent and speak to our hearts, our fears, and our blessings. "The Island" speaks to our political fears and hopes for the future. Very moving expectionally performed. I would recommend buying the Celtic Thunder CD and the DVD of their show in concert. All are EXCELLENT! Looking forward to the seeing the show in person in November 2008!

  • Beautiful!!
    By A1CLR80U91LO2U on 2008-03-29
I ,like so many others, stumbled onto this show on PBS! I am so glad!! It was absolutely wonderful. I was a bit disappointed that all the songs in the show were not on the CD....but the ones that are here are worth the price and more! The only song in the show that seemed a bit out of place was Puppy Love....that one didn't do it for me....but having said that..the rest of the music more than makes up for that one. These guys can sing!! Thanks to PBS for airing this show...and to Amazon for making it available to all.

  • Not Celtic Thunder
    By A2M0H9K884ZWCB on 2008-03-21
Admirers of America's best known traditional Irish music band, Celtic Thunder,
be advised that this is not the real Celtic Thunder, but an entirely different
group that has chosen to appropriate their name and reputation. In a field
where respect for fellow musicians is a given fact, it is truly unfortunate
that these people did not have the imagination to think up a name of their own.

  • Celtic Thunder ROCKS!
    By A3BY4E30LU9OMX on 2008-03-18
Guaranteed to please. These guys are the equivalent to the American Catholic group My Chemical Romance, only authentically Irish. "Raggle Taggle Gypsy" is pretty cool, too. Gotta get the CD from Amazon today.

Notice one thing as you listen to the cadence and style of their technique: it reflects the rising tide of religious and spiritual awakening of young and old across the world. The way of this group's sumptous sound most "resonates" with me.

    ENJOY!

p.s. Click on the video referral beneath it for "Celtic Women." This is very lovely and lighter. But the German-Irish in me likes the pounding intensity of Celtic Thunder. --Sharon

  • A must have for any Celtic music fan! Loved it!!!!
    By A1KB3DYR0LGEXS on 2008-03-24
This is new group & their show & CD was just released on March 18th. I happed to catch it on my local TV station. I must say that they blew me away. I purchased it the day it was available. They are amazing. Any music fan will be pleased to own this.

  • MY NEW FAVORITE GROUP....BUT
    By A2A3DW5WQ8JWBC on 2008-03-28
I watched this on PBS and just knew I had to have the DVD and CD. Was really disappointed to find that the CD has left out many of the best songs. How hard would it have been to make a double CD?

  • I'm addicted to this show. The guys are gorgeous with beautiful voices, singing great music.
    By A34O4JH8TRF5I5 on 2008-05-18
What a fabulous show. Can't wait to see them in person on November 15th.
they're all great singers, but Paul has the most beautiful Irish tenor voice I've ever heard and Damien and Keith are so cute I want to adopt them. Haven't decided whether I want to marry George or Ryan (the older steady guy versus the yummy bad boy).

  • THIS IS **NOT** THE PBS SHOW ON CD!
    By A39OCG5CSXYQJK on 2008-03-24
Since this had the same cover as the DVD, I assumed that it would be the same performance, but in CD format. Well, you know what they say when you assume something?! This CD does NOT contain all the songs from the PBS concert; most notably, George's song to his son ("My Boy") is missing ~ and sorely missed! The songs are still performed well, but most lack the emotion that made the concert so enjoyable. SKIP THE CD and buy the DVD if you want the songs and emotion you saw on PBS.

  • Sucker punched
    By A2CW2YKZTW26OY on 2008-04-04
At best, there are 2-3 songs that have Celtic flavor, The rest is Back Street Boys on steroids. The artists are talented. This collection has no right to call itself Celtic.... ex$ept it $ell$ to an idea. The concert was excellent. This is NOT anything close to the concert. I wish it was a defective copy so I could get a credit and get... almost anything but this. What a disappointment.

  • Yuck
    By A3IUC6IXODYZL4 on 2008-04-28
This is just a ripoff of the Celtic Women concept to give a bunch of guys equal time. It is equally insipid and lame.

  • Outstanding! Can't stop singing along...
    By A1SUDVWFI424FQ on 2008-03-22
WOW, This group is going to take the USA by storm. As a fellow singer and one that appreciates true music, lyrics, melodies/harmonies... I can only say that I cannot stop singing along. I put CT in my Sound System and blended my voice in with theirs. I have been singing and figuring out lyrics and harmonies for about 5 hours now! Thank you so much for this uplifting, enspiring and REAL music. God bless you all.
I hope to see you along the way :)

  • Absolutely Amazing!
    By A3GPC0LK2OFLC9 on 2008-03-22
I saw this group in the 2008 St. Patrick's Day parade, and I knew I wanted to hear more. After listening to two of the clips, I wanted this CD. It has been worth every penny and I can't stop replaying it over and over again.

  • awesome
    By A1Z2IJO2PQ1Y8Q on 2008-03-23
I saw part of the pbs special these 5 talented gentlemen did and immediately went out and bought the cd and am currently waiting for the dvd from amazon. I have listened to the cd repeatedly for the last week and a half and love it immensely. The only real problem I have is that they really should have released the cd as a double cd because there are so many great songs on the dvd that are not included on the cd.

  • Fabulous cd...
    By A3SVB1FNDLYDW6 on 2008-03-29
I've read the other reviews and I still absolutely love this cd. I like music of all kinds, it usually takes a lot to sink me in to something new. I caught this show on PBS - I always seem to catch the same part. There is something about this group that is completely mesmerizing. Yes - this cd does not have all the songs from the show, but with enough interest, maybe a 2nd cd will be released. I have listened to this over and over and these guys have extremely strong voices and it's great - especially for those of you who like something alittle different. The cover of Desperado is awesome. I recommend this cd!

  • Terrible
    By A2KBW0VU147OW0 on 2008-05-03
I bought this for mom and listened to a little bit of it, because that was all I could take. This is boy band material, they can sing, and may have talent. It is just being used in the wrong way. . It is to say the least cheese. It's the Irish making money off of (Irish)Americans with tacky taste, just like Riverdance and Celtic Women.

  • Great Mix of Irish and non Irish Music & Voices
    By A3DAVSXBXCZWC on 2008-05-03
The Celtic Thunder is another wonderful collection to my library. Yes, a few songs are not Irish, but their voices are superb and strong. The young man, Damian, sings a heart warming song, Come By The Hills (Buachaill On Eirne)It begins with the Gaelic language. The Mountains Of Mourne,The Voyage, and the upbeat Ireland's Call are just a few of the songs that are great.
These gentle men do a fine job on their vocals and performance. The PBS special was wonderful, and I am glad to see a new Irish performers continuing our heritage of Irish-American music.

  • Amazing voices and soo... heartfelt!
    By A2607WMEJ8I7U9 on 2008-06-14
Also I love most of their choices of songs, they are heartfelt! It's like having mutiple Josh groban in different styles...You should watch the DVD for their complete performances. Perfect jobs, guy!
Love to watch them when they arrive in the States later this year.

  • Break out the green beer and frosted Lucky Charms
    By AH7ABXMYXO46I on 2008-10-03
I was thrilled when I first heard from a friend that a new Celtic Thunder CD had been released. I had been a fan since the early 1990s of the band whose albums such as "The Light of Other Days" were filled with songs of longing, rebellion, optimism and humor -- original and authentic songs embodying the timeless themes of humanity in general and humanity from the Irish and Irish American perspectives in particular. What a disappointment to find that the new "Celtic Thunder" album was a totally different act, playing off the Celtic Thunder name, and doling out the old sappy stereotyped standards mixed with retreds of pop songs from the recent past. Does the world really need another rendition of Danny Boy or Irish sounding Moody Blues music? If you prefer green beer to Guinness or Disney's Epcot to a trip to Europe, the NEW "Celtic Thunder" may be to your liking. If you like your drink and your music to be authentic, go with the original. An excellent primer would be the compilation CD, "When New York Was Irish, songs & tunes by Terence Winch" that was released in 2007 and also is available on Amazon. It contains a first rate cross section of Celtic Thunder's music along with some additional pieces by some of the groups members recording under the name the Narrowbacks. You won't be sorry that you went with the real thing.

  • Excellent
    By A3IVF81RQAYJ4D on 2008-03-20
This is real class. The vocals, individual and group are amazing.. ages from 14-40. We need more of this type of music to REPLACE the JUNK our young people are listening to and watching. I would recommend this video and DVD to ALL ages. Thank you Celtic Thunder !! MORE!!!!

Celtic Thunder Review......... I was so excited to pre-order this CD and could hardly wait till it arrived. WHAT A DISAPPOINTMENT ! I love these guys and enjoyed them on PBS. I hope the next time a buy another Irish CD the songs are IRISH !

  • Celtic Thunder First CD
    By A1FL8HF5CY22E0 on 2008-04-12
Relatively disappointing if you watched the PBS concert. Only 15 tracks, one of which is the piece the orchestra played after the group sang Caledonia. Uneven division of songs amongst the 4 with Keith singing most (4 or 5) of the songs on the CD with only one song by Ryan and two by Paul. Most of the 'emotional' songs from the concert: My Boy, Caledonia, She's a Woman, are not on the CD.

  • Celtic Thunder CD
    By A1Y0X7RGRATTYC on 2008-04-12
Sadly, this CD only contains about half of the tunes that are performed in 'The Show'. The CD is labelled as Celtic Thunder, The Show, which is misleading. The tunes that are on the disc are excellent, but there were many more excellent pieces of music during the complete show. I would have gladly paid double the asking price of this CD in order to obtain ALL of the music performed during the show!

    By A21YPWLYDDFAR on 2008-04-15
It's not as good as the special on PBS. Some songs are not great quality and songs that were on the T.V. special are not on the cd. The words to the songs are not on the cd insert either.

    By A2HOXDUCH8J97M on 2008-04-16
I saw these guys on PBS while channel surfing one night. I stopped when I heard Damian McGinty's voice. There's just one word to describe it --Phenominal!! I had to listen to the rest of the show and immediately pre-ordered the DVD and the CD. The songs are so true to Irish culture that they bring a smile to your face and make you want to pack up and move across the "big pond." I can't wait for them to tour the US this fall. Excellent CD.

  • Ya gotta love these guys!
    By A1Q1YZDEJ1EF8J on 2008-04-21
I first saw Celtic Thunder on the local PBS station during a funding drive. I knew I had to find out more about them, so naturally I googled "Celtic Thunder" and found out that I could get both the DVD and the CD at Amazon.com for a whole lot less than the PBS station was offering. So I did the only thing that made sense...I ordered them. Have not regretted that purchase one little bit. I keep the CD in my truck so that I can listen on the way to and from work. When just listening isn't enough, I watch the DVD. Love the sound. Love watching the group perform. They are terrific!

  • OUTSTANDING!!!
    By A1WT2D83J7A2KG on 2008-05-04
I'm a Celtic fan! I HAD to have this CD to play in my car to make the boring traffic easier. I literally listen to this music every day. This production is the same quality and caliber as Riverdance and Celtic Women. When I saw the Celtic Thunder show on PBS I fell in love with every one of these gentlemen's voices. The attention to the detail of tonal quality and harmonic blends between voice and instruments is impeccable! I HIGHLY recommend this CD to anyone who loves excellence in music production!
