Totally unsatisfactory By A8ONIVSD118RW on 2008-07-19
I bought the MIdland LXF340 to use with my family on a pleasure cruise. Only after I unwrapped the package and read the instruction book did I find out that one needs an FCC license to use this radio in high power. Forget the long range and the large number of channels. Unless you have a license, you are restricted to channels 8 to 14 at low power.
Secondly, when on in standby mode, the radio emits an irritating static burst every three to five seconds. I was unable to determine why it does this but it doesn't sound like someone else in the vicinity trying to transmit on the same channel.
Needless to say, I returned the radios and got my money back. I will be very reluctant to buy another Midland product.
A good reason to buy midland's radios.... By A2VVN7PJXM2QXO on 2008-07-06
Saludos..
Great Product! By A3O8Y10VXUG0P7 on 2008-08-30
As a wedding consultant/coordinator, I knew I needed to be able to communicate with my staff to make the event run smoother and in case of emergencies no matter where we were doing the ceremony/reception. After looking at many similar products I decided to take a chance on Midland and the surveillance earplugs. I must say it is great! My friend has a similar product, but hers does not measure to the radius and clarity of mines. Great investment!
Great for the price By AS0QB6FNSB1U on 2008-08-10
So far this has been the better pick for a relatively inexpensive walkie talkie as compared to a more expensive Motorola purchased last year. Clear voice.
excellent price for 20 miles By A1HK6ZQXEN0S1F on 2008-07-18
best price for 20 miles GMRS radio
batteries that came with it are very basic 4 AAA rechargeable
did not test the real distance yet
- Excellent Choice!

We actually ordered these for our son's 7th birthday. We wanted something sturdy and durable, not some flimsy kid version. These certainly fit the bill - we have not had any issues with anything breaking (and he's a typical boy) and the range has worked well for us (a mile or so). We have not taken them any further, but for our purposes they work great! I love the rechargeable batteries (again, typical boy)and the holder - we just keep them in the recharger when they're not being used!
- not 20 miles or even close
     By A3VSAUZHAM8Y2Q on 2008-09-29
I thought even in the mountains,I would get some distance using these. I live in a valley and all of the area around me is higher so I figured I would get 5-10 miles at least. I cannot get a signal past 200 yards so although the signal is good around the house, these are worthless for any distance past 200 yards
If you are looking for very close communication these are fine but for anything over that distance KEEP LOOKING THESE ARE NOT FOR YOU

A real quality product.Gave it to my Great Grandson as a birthday gift. He and his brothers love it.
- Good Product

My 11 yr. old loves these. They will not go 20 miles but I really didn't expect them to. They work great for around the yard and in big stores where cell phones won't work.
- Great for the Price
     By A3TNO6OLZ5S6HT on 2008-09-16
First of all the range in normal city conditions is no more than a single mile. I havent tried it in the desert but in the city its 1 or 2 miles tops.
That is normal with ALL GMRS radios so get over it.
Very good features for the price but would of have loved VOX. Feels very solid.
- Not Quite A 22 Mile Range
     By A2I31AXVV0OBCK on 2008-09-30
I used the radios on high power channels last week on a cruise ship and there was so much static that I sounded like the Verizon guy, can you here me know? I know the packaging states that 22 miles is under the best conditions, I would have hoped they would work well for 1000 feet. I gave them 2 stars only because of the battery life lasted for a whole week (with minimal use) without having to recharge.
- Real walkie-talkies at a good price
     By A3AW05VYWC3LX8 on 2008-10-26
These walkie-talkies were purchased for the small school where I work to assist in contacting our first-aid responder/facilities manager wherever on the grounds he might be. They replaced a costlier (but lower quality) model purchased at Target after some fieldtripping students plugged the charger directly into a European wall socket. These Midlands have made me glad they did.
The sound on these is clear and crisp, and the channel spectrum is broad enough that we've had no problem avoiding interference. Our campus is only about four acres, so we haven't had reason to test the stated range, but they do just fine in our brick and reinforced concrete building that is essentially a Faraday cage and the bane of cordless phones and wireless networks.
The call alert is also a nice feature, though annoying when pressed accidentally. I believe there is a lock on them to prevent accidental button presses, but I'm not that advanced a user and would hate to lose time in trying to figure out how to unlock it in an emergency!
Overall, a great product for our short-range needs.
- What a waste!
     By A3AVLMC8AXRSFV on 2008-09-06
These units have lasted a whopping 7 months. Initially, they were great...held a charge; great reception; easy to handle. Now, they have to be recharged daily even though we have them on standby for only 1 hour daily. They have not been dropped or abused. They stink. I rated them two stars for the ease of use and handling ONLY.
- Radio Fun
     By A12EGF7TTODB84 on 2008-09-21
Good radio for recreational use. We took them camping and they worked on all the trails in the park. Clear conversation for up to two miles. We were in granite rocky areas with no interference. Compatible with our other two ways as well.
- good range, good quality, would recommend
     By A23NSB6VVF7MGC on 2008-10-03
I bought these for my kids to play with in the yard, but they work so well the kids may not get them back. Took them to the cabin and hunting already and had excellent performance. Not as many frills as Motorola's I have had in the past, but i never used the extra features anyway.
