Multi-platinum recording artist Barenaked Ladies will release Snacktime, a collection of 24 original children’s songs through their imprint label Desperation Records. "Our collective kids now outnumber the band more than 2 to 1," explains vocalist/guitarist Ed Robertson. "We set out to make a record that would be entertaining for them … not strictly a children’s record, but a record that children would really enjoy. Our kids are into all kinds of music. Making the focus about what our kids like was a truly liberating process and fun for the whole band." MPN: 422588 - UPC: 093624988380

  • Oh those Canadians!

    By A37PV5GMP2ILJC on 2008-05-18
    "Raisins come from grapes
    People come from apes
    I come from Canada"

    (lyrics from "Raisins")

This Canadian alt-rock band scores big with my family with this album of 24 original and hilarious songs for kids. For a taste of the album make sure you watch the video on the Amazon product page for the first track "7,8,9", based on the old pun about a very hungry number seven.

Whether they're singing about ninjas or pollywogs, allergies or the alphabet, BNL never fail to bring a smile to your face with the clever lyrics and catchy tunes.

The ones we really like are "The Ninjas"; "Pollywog in a Bog"; "Raisins"; "The Canadian Snacktime Trilogy ii - Popcorn"; "Allergies"; and "I Don't Like". The one that made me smile is "Crazy ABC's", and I'll list a few letters so you can see why.

    A is for Aisle
    B is for Bdellium
    C is for Czar
    D is for Djinn

    And further down ....

    H is for Hour
    J is for Jalapeno
    M is for Mnemonic
    T is for Tsunami

The one small problem is that there are a few too many slower tracks that are pretty good as folk ballads, but not so good at holding the attention of younger kids. Some of these are "Louis Loon", "The Canadian Snacktime Trilogy i - Snacktime"; "The Canadian Snacktime Trilogy iii - Vegetables"; "My Big Sister" and "Bad Day". The melodies are nice, but will be more to the liking of slightly older folk. (Think Gordon Lightfoot)

One fun bit of trivia is that at the end of "The Canadian Snacktime Trilogy i - Snacktime" various people tell you their favorite snacks, and these people include Gordon Lightfoot, Geddy Lee, Lyle Lovett, Sarah MacLachlan, Jason Priestley, Janeane Garofalo and Weird Al Yankovic.

Light-hearted, punny, clever and very, very entertaining - this is an album the whole family can enjoy and sing along to between giggles.

  • Super fun and silly.

    By AHRNDSKWH1YBT on 2008-05-06
As you might know, for Barenaked Ladies, this is certainly a compliment. I am pleased as pie with this new kids record. I have been (not so) patiently waiting this release for over a year now. You won't be disappointed.

I do wish it had a video companion, a la TMBG's ABC and 123s. But we can't win them all!

  • Soooooo cool!!

    By A3QH9R2MCCQ7AR on 2008-05-08
Can't wait to get this in the mail. They were on Regis & Kelly this morning. My kids are adults now, but had to get this for the little one I babysit!

  • classic Barenaked Ladies but for kids

    By A3KG3JRWR8KPQP on 2008-05-09
Out of all the bands to date, the barenaked ladies are really the only one that could get away with doing a kids album. The good thing about this album its not just for kids, adult BNL fans will love this CD. This CD brings back the barenaked ladies of old with the million dollar, yoko one era were they could be funny but yet make good songs. This album is great from begining with 789 to the crazy abc's its all good. If you are a BNL with or without kids I urge you to buy this album. You will not regret it.

  • Big let down for a Barenaked Ladies fan.

    By A32HVUMGE0VIMY on 2008-05-09
Being a Barenaked Ladies fan I expected something more upbeat and witty. Instead the CD is full of 24 boring songs that my daughter had no interest in. I recommend you save your money on this one and just by their other CDs which my daughter and I love! If you are looking for something just for children I would suggest Marvelous Day by Stevesongs. • A great choice
    By A2YSUBH6Y6RME9 on 2008-05-19
My children are ages 3 and 9 and both of them love this CD for different reasons. My 3 year old likes to bounce along; my 9 year old likes the funny lyrics in 789 and the alphabet song. I predict this CD will remain in our car CD player for a looooong time.

  • Favorite snack: peanut butter pretzels
    By A1D9HQVT88LPWA on 2008-06-10
This is the first time I've been inspired to write a review on Amazon. I get to listen to a lot of kids music with my 4 year old and this is by far my favorite. To my amazement its also hers (okay I know she'll change her mind in a few weeks). No offense to The Wiggles but if I hear Big Red Car again I'm going to lose it. I can't imagine ever saying that about any of the songs on this album. Some of the slower ones aren't quite as fun but all the others more than make up for them. Also some of the slower ones are awesome. This album has allowed me to introduce my daughter to the rest of the BNL catalog and I'm hoping this will lead to other "adult" bands. All this fun music and I also finally get to find out the favorite snack of the lead singer of my other favorite Canadian band.

  • Snack Time
    By A1CJ2SFFT2R5WX on 2008-06-19
Many good songs for my 4 yr. old & hopefully more as he grows. Catchy & spirited tunes.

  • Know what you're getting when you get this!
    By A1N8PNDWBIQ578 on 2008-08-26
I've been a BNL fan for quite some time now, but don't have any kids. Usually, I run out and get a new BNL album when there is one - I was a bit slow on the uptake here as well as for Barenaked Ladies Are Me.

I wasn't disappointed that time, but this time I was, not knowing that this is a children's album. That's all well and good for parents or younger folks, but I wasn't expecting this and as a result, I wish I'd looked to see what kind of album this was before I got it. It's a good album for kids and parents, but it was somewhat disappointing for me, since I was expecting more of the same. Some of the tracks are fun, but on the whole it was a forgettable album.

That said, if I do have children, I'll have to pick this one up again, and I'm looking forward to BNL's next offering for adults.

  • The Best BNL since Gordon
    By A6Q051BTPKGPN on 2008-05-09
This is the best BNL release-adult or kid-since Gordon. After listening just once I had that same 'gotta share this with everyone I know so they can feel good too' feeling I had with Gordon. I don't even care if my 3 year old likes it or not. I'm going to listen to it until it wears out, then I'm gonna buy another one.

  • Great fun for the whole family
    By A13G8SEIB68MSX on 2008-07-12
I've always thought of BNL as a band for big kids, with their catchy tunes, fun lyrics and humorous live shows. Now they've got one for little kids too! My kids fav songs are 7-8-9, Pollywog in a Bog, Allergies and Curious. My wife and I really like "I don't like". Overall, a really fun and melodic CD.

One small warning for Christian or other religious parents. Two songs you might be concerned with are (1) "Raisins", which says "people come from apes", which while technically not even what evolution says, may make some parents uncomfortable; and (2) "Crazy ABC's", a really great tune, but which does mention Ouija board, so you might need to explain what that is. Or just skip those two songs. The album is worth it.

  • Not Bad
    By A1C0KZ335L3CD4 on 2008-10-18
I enjoy Barenaked Ladies previous albums. For this album is a nice compilation of short songs for children. Some of the songs I would not put on the album only for the length and for the material itself. When I say material is less than creative. I am a critical person, but it is possible to sample listen to the whole album to make your mind up. I am still a fan of this group and will continue to purchase their work for now.

  • Great for kids and adults alike
    By A36PK1VLYPMMY8 on 2008-05-15
My two year old and I both love this CD - he asks for certain songs again and again and we haven't gotten tired of it yet. If my other favorite bands (Fountains of Wayne, Cake, etc) would follow BNL's lead and come out with kids CDS, all would be right with the world. BNL has always had pretty kid-friendly music and with this CD, I am hoping to create a lifelong BNL fan in my son since my husband and I both like the band anyway. Buy it, you won't regret it!

  • woohooo!!!
    By A27M4P5TOQBILT on 2008-05-20
LOVE LOVE LOVE this new CD.
I am a BNL fan for over 15 years and didn't know about this CD....
I bought it along with a replacement for Born on a Pirate Ship (which also ROCKS!)which my 11 year old lost somewhere....I didn't know it was a kids CD

My 11 year old loves BNL and my 6 year old likes them, but she just LOVES this CD. she bounces around to Drawing and sings along with 789 (among others).
The guys did a great job on this one!!

  • More please!
    By A3GB8GC2Q7FPD2 on 2008-05-22
"I'm going to listen to 789 one hundred million gazillion manillion betillion times!" That is a direct quote from my four-year-old, BNL-loving son, and I couldn't agree more.

This is a great album for parents and children alike. It's a good thing, too, because we're going to be listening to it a LOT! Thank you, Ladies!

  • Perfect for the whole family and all ages!
    By A2QP136UNGUCA6 on 2008-06-05
You know in the 90's I was never into the Barenaked Ladies, I took no notice of them when they were over-played on the radio and thought they had a stupid name for a band. Now however with two toddlers around, I decided to get this album when I heard it reveiwed on the Manic Mommies podcast. Now I'm hooked.
It's super silly music that makes the kids dance and is all around entertaining. You can play it over and over in the car or at home and not go crazy(Wiggles anyone?). I also find myself singing along and tapping my toes when the kids are not even around.

  • Sounds like a bunch of children's songs
    By A12VLJBT12OLYD on 2008-06-06
I did not like this. Really disappointed. I don't want to give it any stars. It does not deserve any.

  • Snacktime--Yummy for your Ears
    By A19F7R872CTZBK on 2008-06-09
Snacktime by Barenaked Ladies is a real TREAT for kids of all ages! BNL succeeds yet again--way to go guys!

  • Wonderful music, Crappy packaging!
    By A1PTTEYFE49BQM on 2008-08-08
Great music! We are huge fans of They Might Be Giants, so I wanted to give this a chance. It is really fun and great for parents and kids alike. The downfall is the packaging! Why go cheap with cardboard slipsleeve? At leat give us the plastic CD case to protect the product!

  • A great Kids' album
    By A36EE2HFQQJOM7 on 2008-05-08
This new BNL album is upbeat and a lot of fun to listen to.
    My kids love it.

  • A Hit with My Class!
    By A2N38KTMWKFXEY on 2008-05-20
I took this CD into my classroom and the my 3rd graders absolutely love it! Some of the humor is better when you can read the lyrics at the same time, and they get a kick out of singing the songs together. Believe it or not, some of the songs even hit the TEKS (the Polywog song fits habitat, etc). A must for a classroom teacher who likes to incorporate music.

  • Super fun and catchy
    By A1SOT27ILE9FXV on 2008-05-26
Well done clever kid songs that even my wife and I enjoy. Our 5 month old gets all wiggly and excited when we put this on, which I take to be a positive review. Highly recommended if you are looking for kids music that doesn't suck or make you want to jump off a bridge.

  • Great Fun!
    By A3GVIBXIST9QLA on 2008-06-01
I love the Barenaked Ladies' music and now my son and I can enjoy their fun upbeat music together. Great for any family. allergies is my favorite song.

  • My Very Picky 3-year-old LOVES this CD!
    By A253NNPE2D1SDR on 2008-06-08
My son has listened to this CD every day since it was released. He is very choosy about what music he listens to (mostly 60s and 70s pop), and doesn't like a lot of "kids" music. He is also a fan of the NRBQ and They Might Be Giants kids' CDs as well as some Dan Zanes' tunes. If you want a kids' CD that also is fun for adults, particularly BNL fans, like myself, you will be very happy with this CD. My son also loves the 789 and Drawing videos. It would be great if a DVD came out with both cartoon and live-action videos for these songs.

  • ENjoyable for the entire family
    By A1HD3RFVMP0O7T on 2008-06-10
All 4 of us (mom, dad, and 2 boys 4 and 7) really enjoy listening to this CD in the car.

Best and only one we like since Jack Johnsons "Curious George" soundtrack.

  • Barenaked Groupie...
    By AB1Y80LBAC7J0 on 2008-06-11
My kids love these guys, this CD has been playing on repeat in the car for two weeks. I even listen to it alone in the car - "Ninja's" has been stuck in my head for days now! The whole CD is catchy, clever and as well put together as any of their "grown-up" albums.

  • My daughter loves this!
    By A2VHR6AARX44P3 on 2008-06-13
What a great CD! My little girl (going on 15 months) loves it and dances all around, clapping her little hands and laughing. The CD is not annoying, albeit a bit long, and there are a lot of things I find very humorous (like the Crazy ABC song, where A is for Aisle, and c is for czar, etc) that a child wouldn't understand for quite some time. True to Barenaked Ladies form, this is a great CD!

  • Catchy non-annoying kids tunes
    By A2Q6A27L66Y1AO on 2008-06-13
This is yet another fantastic BNL album. We purchased it shortly after the birth of our first child. Not knowing the best ways to calm him, we tried music. This album, with all of its catchy kids tunes, calms him down very quickly. Because it is in the traditional BNL style(think Gordon), my wife and I are able to enjoy the music. I would highly recommend this album for any BNL fan whether they have kids or not, but it should be a hit with the kids.

  • Great as usual
    By A2546ISGDXZP0L on 2008-06-14
I have been a BNL fan since Gordon, and this was a great opportunity for me to share them with my kids. My kids have their favorite tracks like 7,8,9 and Popcorn which I hear "AGAIN!!" shouted from the backseat when they are played. It is a fun way to introduce my kids to my favorite artist. My husband and I enjoy the cd as well.

  • Loved it!
    By A1QY17WQDFPE0M on 2008-06-15
As a huge fan of the group I was so excited to get this CD! My girls love every song (the first one is the favorite since my oldest is just now understanding the 7-8-9 joke) and they dance for hours listening to it without mom going crazy. A lot of the songs are over the top with interesting rhymes and well worth it in my opinion.
