This desktop is powered by the 2.7 GHz AMD Athlon 64 X2 5200+ dual-core processor, which increases the efficiency and speed of the PC while running multiple programs and the latest multi-threaded software. It features a large-and-in-charge 500 GB hard drive, and it includes an open drive bay for an optional HP Pocket Media Drive (which can add up to 160 GB of storage). Other features include 3 GB of installed RAM (maximum), Nvidia GeForce 6150LE video card with 128 MB of dedicated memory (and up to 1343 MB of available memory), multi-format memory card reader, a wide variety of connectivity options (including both USB 2.0 and Firewire), and digital audio output for home theater surround sound.

This desktop also comes preinstalled with Microsoft Windows Vista Home Premium (Service Pack 1), which includes all of the Windows Media Center capabilities for turning your PC into an all-in-one home entertainment center. In addition to easily playing your DVD movies and managing your digital audio library, you'll be able to record and watch your favorite TV shows (even HDTV). Vista also integrates new search tools throughout the operating system, includes new parental control features, and offers new tools that can warn you of impending hardware failures.

The Basics

  • Processor: AMD's Athlon 64 X2 5200+ dual-core processor is built for tomorrow's 64-bit applications, which will require a processor with significant power. Dual-core technology is like having two processors working together, each one taking care of different applications, so power-users actually experience greater performance when multiple applications are running. Digital media enthusiasts will appreciate the enhancements while simultaneously working in high-definition video and photo editing and audio mixing programs. It includes such AMD features as HyperTransport Technology (which increases the communication between integrated circuits) and Enhanced Virus Protection.

This 2.7 GHz processor offers a system bus with speeds up to a blazing 2000 MHz and a 1 MB L2 cache. (An L2, or secondary, cache temporarily stores data; and a larger L2 cache can help speed up your system's performance. The FSB carries data between the CPU and RAM, and a faster front-side bus will deliver better overall performance.)

  • Hard Drive: The 500 GB Serial ATA (SATA) hard drive (7200 RPM) offers a wealth of storage space, perfect for storing a vast multimedia collection or for editing digital video. This SATA hard drive has a 3Gb/s interface speed that enables up to 300MB/s data transfer rates (double the speed of the current SATA interface of 1.5Gb/s).

This Slimline PC also includes a drive bay that fits an optional HP Pocket Media Drive, which enables you to add up to 160 GB of additional storage. The Pocket Media Drive also works with any USB-enabled PC, for easy transferring of multimedia files from other computers in your home.

  • Memory: The 3 GB of installed RAM (PC2-6400, 2 x 1 GB and 2 x 512 MB) will get you moving, but this desktop has room enough for 8 GB of RAM (4 x 2 GB) to speed along your multimedia and gaming applications. It also offers a top-of-the-line 800 MHz speed. To receive the faster data transfer benefits of the dual-channel DDR2 RAM, any RAM additions require memory modules of same capacity and clockspeed.

  • DVD/CD Drive: This multiformat DVD/CD drive is compatible with writing both DVD+ and DVD- disc formats as well as dual-layer (DL) DVD+/-R discs, which can store up to 8.5 GB of data. It features 8x DVD-R DL Write Once, 8x DVD+R DL Write Once, 16x DVD+R, 8x DVD+RW, 16x DVD-R, 6x DVD-RW, 12x DVD-RAM, 40x CD-R, 32x CD-RW write speeds and 40x CD-ROM, and 16x DVD-ROM read speeds.

This LightScribe DVD±RW drive lets you laser-etch silkscreen quality text and images on to CDs and DVDs . Your software, PC and discs work together for a no-hassle way to burn just the labels you want. After you burn content, just flip the disc over, reinsert and burn your label--anything from a simple title to a full-disc work of art.

  • Keyboard & Mouse: This desktop comes with an HP multimedia keyboard and optical mouse (both PS/2) and remote control.
Video & Audio
This desktop features an integrated Nvidia GeForce 6150 SE graphics/video card with 128 MB of dedicated memory and up to 1343 MB of available graphics memory as allocated by Windows Vista. Nvidia's exclusive TurboCache technology allows direct rendering from the GPU to system memory by leveraging the bi-directional PCI Express bandwidth. The TurboCache Manager dynamically allocates memory for maximum system performance while intelligent software algorithms maximize application performance. It also offers an integrated audio card that can produce high definition surround sound configurable to 6 speakers.

Networking, Connectivity & Expansion
This desktop has an integrated 54g wireless LAN that's fully compatible with 802.11b/g wireless networks. For expansion, this Slimline desktop has one PCI slot (occupied), one PCI x16 Express slot (available), one 5.25-inch external bay (occupied), and two internal 3.5-inch bays (occupied). It comes with the following external connections:

  • Great little computer

    By A2IFDIW8FPOVZN on 2008-05-27
I brought the s3421 which is the same as the s3420 only without the tv tuner, another retailer is featuring them on sale this week. I brought this computer to replace my high end HP laptop that died. Because of that I hesitated buying another HP. But I've had HP's in the past that were fine. And I swear by the printers. I didn't want another laptop though. This litte computer for the money really packs a punch. I found I rather like the Windows Vista system and I know I'm in the minority on that one. But this computer is fast, stays cool, and you can barely here it running, unlike the laptop before it. Nice softwhere assortment with it. Let's face it the avg computer user really only needs Microsoft works for their office needs. You only need office if you work at home and there is a 3 month student trial for Office 2007. I rather liked the look of that also(let's not forget and support our open source buddies by downloading openoffice free Office clone that can read Microsoft office files). The special keys on the keyboard make it easy to acess mail, internet, open and close the disk drive. The disk drive is vertical that took some getting used to. You can use is laying on it's side but space didn't permit me to so using as a tower. It's small maybe 30# larger then a wii if that. I don't know if it's the trend these days but didn't give you any software disks. You have to make a recovery disk yourself. Very little written instruction. So if you've never used a computer before might have some problems. It has 6 USB ports, firewire, media card reader. Even though mine didn't come with a tv tuner it still has the Media center. Now I got this with my laptop and a usb tv tuner which I could use. The Media center has come a long way since I looked at it. You have the option to download movies (at a price), watch shows on most of the basic cable channel for ex. History channel, food network. You can intergrate with you music, except if you have an ipod and itunes, they don't work well with others, there are programs that will unlock the protection Apple puts on anything you put into itunes but if you have thousands of song might not be worth it. Also with music get yourself some good speakers has a nice sound but I have some cheap speakers I got temp while using another computer. With a 500 gig hard drive unless you a media hound won't fill that up. Hard to believe my first computer had a total of 6.4 gig hard drive. I paid $[...] after rebates and this computer does what some priced twice this amount. It' definately a good value. The one selling here is also with the tuner and remote. But if you fine without you might check out a popular office supply company till 5/31/08. And remember real people don't wear real fur.

  • Slimline S3430f for Home Theater

    By A1ADZ1E9SSPFU0 on 2008-06-18
I have owned the Slimline S3430f for about 3 weeks now and have been impressed with the performance of this computer. It has a small form factor and can be mounted horizontially so it fits well in my home theater credenza. It is connected via HDMI to my Onkyo TX-SR805 receiver and then to a 50" LG plasma TV.

I have played Blu-Ray, HD DVD and standard DVD's on this system. So far I've only had one disk that was difficult to play but I was able to get it to work. I have a 5.1 sound system and it relays both Digital Dolby and DTS signals. Have not yet used high definition audio but that requires a 7.1 speaker set up on my receiver.

I have ordered WIN DVD 9 Plus Blu-Ray software. I am using the trial version of WIN DVD 9 now - its All2HD upconverting for standard DVD is incredible, better than my Oppo DVD player. The included HP DVD software is a stripped down version of Power DVD but the latest verion of PDVD will not play HD DVD disks unless you hack it.

I have also loaded over 150 music CD's on the sytem in WMA lossless format - good quality sound playback on the HP S3430F via Windows Media Player. First time I have had most of my music on computer and it really makes it a lot easier to access. Big benefit that was not considered when I bought the computer.

Its also fun to use the system to surf the net on the big screen. The S3430F does NOT include a wireless keyboard and mouse so I had to buy them separately - IOMEGA offers a 2.4 gigahertz model that works from up to 33 feet away. HP should have included something like this given that the system is designed for home theater and remote access is critical.

All in all I have enjoyed using the system. Lots of RAM, good sized hard drive, Windows Vista 64 Bit plus quad core AMD chip make it plenty fast and able to multi-task easily.

  • Are u looking for Powerful, stylish, small and very fast pc? I recommend this product 100%

    By ANFTT5G2FOXSH on 2008-06-09
What a product from hp? Like it very much, from the second I took it out of its box and when I inserted it into my LCD table like a dvd player, for the first time I see vista like an operating system instead of crab, high speed and performance running software and games smoothly I tried fifa 08 it works 100% and crysis at a normal and low resolution, and it works good too.
Wireless lan card also is a good feature as a desktop pc, nvidia vga card gives u a cool graphic performance and a perfect control of colors and brightness.
I should mention this: hp has a great chatting support 24/7 I spoke to them more than 10 times for another laptops cases and never takes more than 10 sec to receive an answer from tech..
Sorry for my English and have a nice time with ur great product u r going to buy :)

  • I am so pleased!

    By A4KRB9TKRU2T2 on 2008-06-07
I ordered this HP Pavilion S3420F Slimline with the HP 19" monitor and HP 4180 printer last Monday night, took advantage of the free offer of Prime shipping, got it all (plus the 3 softwares I ordered) on the following Thursday. Set it up in a few minutes, and within another few minutes we were on the internet with the built in WiFi and that beautiful big screen monitor, fantastic display, awesome! Got to admit we havn't figured out the TV tuner and some of the other features yet. We are so delighted with what we got, did quite a bit of research, very pleased. I have ordered quite a few things with Amazon and have always had good results even when we returned a watch, great response!
HP has a rebate right now if you order a PC and a printer on the same day (I called to verify this with HP) and from the same business (e.i. Amazon) I would get $50. back on this $85. printer. And Amazon has a deal when I ordered this PC that MSFT Office H&S is only $75.! Great deals!
I look at Amazon with confidence before I look anywhere else online.

  • Fast and Compact

    By A1XDRSGSV56YQ0 on 2008-06-16
Fast and takes up a minimum of space. The Vista OS in this one seems to be improved vs. the almost identical model I purchased for my wife at Christmas.

  • Sweet!
    By A207A0CIGTTMA4 on 2008-06-30
    Great computer!
Wow this is so much nicer than my previous computer which was state of the art a few years ago but had become impossibly slow. This machine works fast and its so small.
I haven't figured out how to use everything, but what I have investigated is pretty cool. Plus, the ad lists that it comes with 3GB of RAM but actually comes with 4GB. The graphics card is something that might need upgrading; if that's important to you you may want to look at another version of HP.

    Shipping was nice too. [...]

    Perfect!

  • The Great Leap Forward
    By A1O67TKL3LG9X9 on 2008-07-02
Processor, RAM, hard drive capacity, video & sound cards certain to meet most requirements, even those of modest gamers or video hobbyists. Compact case fits nicely right on your desktop.

Transition from Win98SE to Vista was an exercise in surprise. Bottom line is Vista works fine, and the Premium Home Edition is worth it if only to get the cool 3D Chess game.

Included software bundle & HP system utilities are what you'd expect- nothing special to worry about- and all removable/ replaceable as you see fit.

Everything worked right out of the box. What's not in the box though are things like adapter cables for your sound system or DVD's to make system disks. Visit HP's site for info on this stuff.

  • Great slim PC!
    By AIIWXTTMQJRW1 on 2008-07-10
I am enjoying my HP Slimline. I love that is is smaller is size yet much bigger in every other way, than my old PC. I was worried after hearing all the neg about Vista - but I love, it, too. I don't know why most don't - sure it takes some getting use to but it's snazzy. Excellent PC for the price. After researching online and reading reviews - I'm super happy I went with this one! Bought it at my local Circuit City tho - on sale!

  • Sleek
    By A3GJDZM7YPQ05Y on 2008-07-17
I believe you will be pleased with the size and performance of this PC. Set up was easy, quick and efficient. Vista runs smoothly and your display is enhanced. The price can't be beat.

  • If only it were very very quiet ...
    By A2196EVNTY34H1 on 2008-07-25
I had to send it back. I didn't really want to because I loved the form factor and the specs. The blu-ray DVD alone means you saved $400 for a standalone blu-ray DVD player, and the built in memory and 500 gigs hard drive are fabulous. However, went I installed in the bedroom, it had a fan hum that was too loud for that use. It would have been okay in an office or a living room, it wasn't that loud, but you can't have that steady hum in the bedroom where you sleep. When everything else was quiet, we heard it way too much.

  • so far, so good
    By A221D9OWDIQYV1 on 2008-06-19
Great so far. I've been running this PC for about 4 weeks. I like that it's small. It runs well. No complaints so far. Great value for money.

  • Great Computer. Outstanding HP Technical Support
    By A1QP3E15093TXL on 2008-07-28
This is my firts HP and I'm happy how slim and compact it is, not to say about the low noise. The first boot, however, took long minutes before the Vista could login. And everytime I tried to boot, use the Blu-Ray drive and even some websites would halt the system for long 2 minutes. After serveral e-mails exchanged with HP Technical Support, I finally found out that the Blu-Ray drive had something wrong. I tried to unplug it and everything came smooth. HP then replaced my defective Blu-Ray drive and now the PC is wonderful. And after the experience I had with HP customer support, I have no doubt my next PC will be an HP again.

My only complaint is the fact HP will not give full warranty for overseas, as this specific product is not supported by HP support in my country. I understand that, but the thing is HP in my country would not even hear my problem (which was initially the non-ability to create the Recovery Discs, which there is nothing related to the hardware, but with the software). HP in the US, however, understood completely the fact that I lived overseas and tried their best to match my schedule while I was back to the US.

  • we are very happy
    By A3GOIBVJKZ6I7Q on 2008-08-09
we are very happy with this computer because is an very good machine for a very reasonable price

  • terrible
    By A3G0W08NML2PBN on 2008-08-14
This is the worst computer I have ever owned. I got it on sale at Wal-mart for $500, and thought I got a good deal. Wrong! From the first time I hooked it up, it has run slowly. It takes forever for the desktop to load up. The dvd rom randomly opens itself during shutdown, which may not be discovered for a day. It constantly updates, making it even slower, and most of the updates are useless to me. As for getting on the internet, only try that if you have all day. Even with dsl, it can take as long as 5 minutes to load the homepage. For a while, I thought mine was just screwed up, but then I found out my step-father has the same problems with his slimline. Neither of us will buy an hp again.

  • Keyboard and mouse disaster
    By A2KXOZ8EW7QC0B on 2008-08-20
Such a pity, the looks and performance of the PC itself is outstanding from its speed to its media capability. BUT both the keyboard and mouse that were supplied with this HP PC repeatedly froze up!

I've consumed so many hours with the call center uninstalling, restalling drivers; resetting BIOS; subsituting hardware I already owned from other machines, to no avail!

My solution? I purchased a USB keyboard and mouse from another manufacturer and it works perfectly. Disappointed that HP did not provide this solution. Also it's a pity that two valuable USB slots are now consumed with basic imput devices...but at least it now works.
